ACTS or MIGHTY ACTS?

There is a popular acronym that some use to assist them in the content of their prayers. The origin of ACTS (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) as a prayer outline is unknown, although some believe it is displayed in and derived from The Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13). Spiritual leaders, from Christians to Catholics, including such well-known personalities as Billy Graham, have promoted its use. While this is a good, helpful prayer-starter, there is much more to prayer than adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication. Acknowledging that every acronym has its limitations; may I suggest a longer version? The Psalmist made reference to “the mighty acts of the LORD” (Psalm 106:2). So let’s work with MIGHTY: Meditation, Intercession, Giving Up (as in fasting. Remember how often prayer and fasting are mentioned together?), Humbling ourselves, Travail (remember this lost word?), and Yielding (the “nevertheless, Your will be done” idea). It’s not much of an acronym, but its mine. Feel free to substitute your own words, but let’s acknowledge that while prayer is ACTS, it is more than ACTS.

SLOW DOWN

Have you ever felt you needed to slow your life down enough to pray? I have. I seem to be naturally in a hurry. Prayer calls me to slow down and rest, focus and commune with God. I have even felt the need to slow my prayers themselves down. Two weeks ago I made that as a commitment. So each day as I prayed through prayer lists and took needs to God, I told myself over and over again “Slow down.”

I tried to slow down to narrow my focus on people; to slow down and watch; to slow down and listen; to slow down and remember; to slow down and think; to slow down and give thanks, even or especially when I am not focused on anything I deem thankworthy.

The primary thing I learned in the experience was that I need God to help me slow down. I cannot do it on my own. Like every other facet of prayer. I need God’s help. It is worth asking God to help us slow our prayers down to connect with God rather than the hurried world.

Free Download-Scriptures to Pray

9651013086?profile=originalAre you going through a season in your prayer life where you feel your prayers have become humdrum, repetitive, or pointless? We often go through such seasons when we get busy and neglect time in God’s Word, and then as a result our prayer life suffers.

That was my experience a number of years ago when I felt the prayers for my grandchildren were very general, rote, empty and powerless. Since being a long distance grandmother, I just prayed they would be safe and have a good day.

God Gave Wisdom

However, that all changed after I asked God to give me wisdom and insight how I could pray for them more effectively. After searching the Scriptures and reading several books about grandparenting and prayer. I learned to pray intentionally which means a determination to pray, done by intention or design

As a result I searched the Scriptures to develop “31 Scriptures to Pray for my Grandchildren” which I would like to share with you.

I would like to invite you to join our mailing list for updated blogs and grandparenting suggestions on this website. I will send you a free downloadable copy you can print of the “31 Scriptures to Pray for your Grandchildren” taken from the book Grandparenting with a Purpose.  The “Scriptures to Pray” is now available in English and Spanish. If you would like the Spanish translation, join the mailing list but also send me a separate e-mail at info@grandparentingwithapurpose.com with your name and email address.

My prayer is that you too will find the “31 Scriptures to Pray” a valuable resource to help you pray intentionally with confidence and

 boldness for yourself and your grandchildren.

Patriot Praying or Kingdom Praying

Patriot Praying or Kingdom Praying

Recently, I came across an article in the Connector, published by Intercessors for America.  It was titled ‘A Warning from Macedonia’.  Some of you, who have are on the Intercessors for America mailing list, may have seen it.

It raises an interesting question—are we trying to view control—possibly by encouraging adherence to our particular belief by a political candidate or party as the answer to our problems?  That involves the thinking, that the solution we think is best—is what God wants.

There is a lot to think about in that statement. –Maybe we are asking God to fix our problems—when we should be asking for God’s presence and power to be demonstrated in the church. --  The real question here is does God just want to fix our problems—or does he want us to know Him?

Our country has great division in it.  We are a people that may be too diverse in our thinking for our own good.  The result of such thinking that does not focus on getting to know the Lord Jesus.  What would happen if we were to focus on asking for God’s presence?

Rather than offer suggestions—I would like to open this discussion up to others.  It you have experience the Lord’s presence—what change has it brought?

Maybe you differ with the focus that we should invite the presence of God.  Tell us why.

Finally-what does it take to replace nationalistic type praying with God’s Kingdom Perspective.

Around two years ago, the lead pastor of the largest church in Juarez, Mexico, was quietly praying when he was prompted by God to immediately resign his position, set up a small tent in a downtown park, and then pray and fast for 21 days.

Juarez, just over the border from El Paso, TX, made international news due to its high murder rate and very significant drug cartel influence.  Stories of dozens of daily murders became commonplace in the news.  Residents became fearful, and many moved away; if they were able to afford to move.

The pastor immediately obeyed God's command; resigning his position, setting up a tent in the park God instructed him to go to, and then fasted and prayed.

Around the fourth day of praying, the pastor was visited by a local news reporter.  The reporter, shocked to see the pastor there (the park was filled with many dangerous drug dealers and illegal activities), asked him, "What are you doing here?"  The pastor then shared all that God had told him to do.

In the days that followed, the reporter returned to check on a pastor's safety and ask for updates.  Following each visit, the reporter filed a report in the local paper.

At the end of the 21 days, the pastor felt prompted by God to visit the city's mayor.  At the same time, the mayor had been reading the reporter's updates about the praying pastor.  The mayor invited the pastor and reporter to personally meet with him.

During the meeting, the pastor felt prompted to ask the mayor, "What's the biggest problem facing this city?"

The mayor answered, "Our prison.  It's the center of all the drug activity in our city.  People find ways to get arrested and imprisoned there, just so they can profit from the drug running and money laundering happening in that place.  Also, over 60% of the prison guards are actively involved in the cartels as well.  We, as the government, feel powerless to do anything to change that situation, or to help our community's safety."

The men then prayed together.

Soon, God gave the men a plan.  They jotted it down, then set about implementing it God's way.

The next day, Mexico's military came to the prison, surrounded it, and shut all of its activities down cold turkey.  Next, hundreds of doctors and nurses, specializing in drug rehab, were brought into the prison to work with the 1,000+ men; helping them come off of their drug highs and move toward sobriety.  Next, pastors and church leaders were also brought in to pray, share the gospel with each prisoner and prison guard, and counsel each person inside the walls.

Over the next couple of months, over 60% of the people within the walls of the prison placed their faith in Jesus Christ.  Many discovered healing from addictions, and others found a passion to share the gospel instead of deal drugs.

Over the next year, the crime rate in Juarez dropped by over 90%!

This is one of many things God is doing in our world, and it's one that serves to embolden and strengthen the prayer lives of Christians everywhere!  Did you notice how the story started?  It started by one man humbling himself, praying to God, and listening for His voice/prompting.

Let's look at what God told Solomon in the Old Testament:

“When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place. I have chosen and consecrated this temple so that my Name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there." - 2 Chronicles 7:13-16

Humble ourselves and pray.  It's pretty simple, yet also easy to miss in the busyness of our lives.

At that time, people prayed in temples.  Today, we are temples of the Holy Spirit; God's Spirit living and dwelling within each follower of Jesus Christ.  (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

God is working all around us, but He's also waiting for His children to seek Him in prayer for the people, places, and world around us (in addition to our own lives, thoughts, and motives).  We don't have to wait for tragedy, death, or destruction to hit our communities or neighborhoods before we begin to pray.  We can do so right now; and watch what God does as we seek His face!

Good friend, Dave Butts, the Chair of America's National Prayer Committee shares this brief, but encouraging word.

"It's an exciting thing to be in on what God is doing; to bring about tremendous change that can only happen from the Lord!" - Dave Butts

"I can just imagine Satan gathering all the demons in hell and discussing what they can do to destroy Christians. And Satan says, 'Keep them from praying. Because no matter what else they do, if they don't pray, we can beat them every time. But if they learn how to pray, they'll beat us every time. Keep them from praying.'" -Dr. Sidlow Baxter

UPPER MESOPOTAMIA: CHRISTIANS AT THE MERCY OF ISIS

by Elizabeth Kendal

The Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham/Syria (ISIS) formally split from Al-Qaeda earlier this year over long-disputed matters of principle and strategy. (1) Regarding principle: Al-Qaeda's more seasoned leaders - the 'old guard' - are prepared to co-operate with Iran / Shi'ites in pursuit of higher goals. The 'young-guns' of ISIS are not. Rather, ISIS is sticking uncompromisingly to the Saudi Wahhabi / Salafi creed which is vehemently anti-Shia. (2) Regarding strategy: Al-Qaeda's more seasoned leaders have learnt that fighters must treat local Muslims gently and win their hearts and minds if they are to avoid generating local resistance. On the other hand, ISIS regards that as compromising and soft. Rather, ISIS is enforcing strict Sharia codes and enacting cruel Sharia punishments, including public lashings, amputations and execution, even crucifixions. It is not that al-Qaeda is 'more moderate' than ISIS, it is just more rational. Al-Qaeda still wants to annihilate Israel, establish a Caliphate and take jihad to the West. Al-Qaeda is well aware that division and intra-Muslim conflict will weaken the global jihad movement.

ISIS has ruled Syria's Raqqa Province, plus territory along the Euphrates River and Iraq's restive Sunni Anbar Province since February. The border between Syria and Iraq (pencilled in by Sykes and Picot in 1916) now exists only in theory. Last week Iraqi security services (mostly Shi'ites) melted away as ISIS advanced through Northern Iraq's Nineveh Province. In a blitzkrieg ISIS captured its capital, Mosul (Iraq's second largest city), along with its airports, banks (holding an estimated $500 million), armouries (stocked with US-made materiel) and more. The immediate goal of ISIS is to restore Sunni power in Baghdad. Shi'ite militias (including Iranians) are defending the Shia heartland and Shia holy places. Kurdish peshmerger forces are defending the Kurdish heartland and oil-rich Kirkuk. While launching terror attacks and incursions, ISIS will consolidate its rule over the Sunni-dominated but ethnically and religious diverse region of Upper Mesopotamia (Arabic: al-Jazira). Spanning north-east Syria and north-west Iraq, Upper Mesopotamia is the ancient Christian heartland.

World Watch Monitor (WWM) has confirmed that some 1000 Christian families fled Mosul last week as ISIS invaded. Displaced Christians have fled to Christian churches, monasteries and schools. Many thousands of Iraqis from across Nineveh Province have fled into Erbil, the Kurdish capital. One Christian couple from Mosul who found refuge for themselves and their young children in a church in Erbil told WWM (12 June) that they had been eating dinner, having already made plans to leave, when two homes around them burst into flames after being hit by rocket fire. The family fled carrying nothing but their papers. The Archbishop of Mosul, Amel Nona, told WWM (13 June) that in the 11 years following the 2003 US-led invasion, Christians in Mosul had declined from 35,000 to 3,000. Now 'all the faithful have fled the city'. There are reports that ISIS has taken an unconfirmed number of Christians hostages. With such a vast area to defend ISIS will doubtless secure its bases with human shields.

In Nineveh, as in Raqqa, Syria [See RLPB 250, 4 March 2014], ISIS is enforcing strict Sharia codes. Christians in Mosul had been paying jizya (protection money) to al-Qaeda for years. In 2008, the then archbishop of Mosul, Paulos Rahho, was killed for refusing to pay jizya. Now ISIS has released a 'Contract of the City' laying down the rules and penalties. Theft will be punished with amputation. Those who are corrupt face the penalties of Sura 5:33 [http://quran.com/5/33 ] i.e. death, crucifixion, cross amputation or exile. If police, soldiers and other government workers fail to repent they will be killed as apostates. All shrines and graves will be destroyed. Women should not leave their homes unless absolutely necessary, and if they do, must wear the niqab, the full black covering with a slit for the eyes. Such conditions make it unlikely that the displaced Christians will ever return to their homes. Upper Mesopotamia's Christians are caught in 'the eye of the storm'. Though they do not have their own army, they do have Yahweh Sabaoth, the Lord of Heaven's Hosts.

PLEASE PRAY SPECIFICALLY THAT GOD WILL -

* 'frustrate the way of the wicked' (Psalm 146). May the Lord's enemies continue to divide and weaken. 'Let the wicked fall into their own nets, while [God's people] pass by safely.' (Psalm 141:10 ESV)

* aid, protect and provide for the thousands of displaced Christian families, along with those who give them shelter.

* graciously open the eyes and hearts of all those Muslim families who are sheltering with Christian families in Christian churches, monasteries and schools across Nineveh; may Muslims, who essentially view God as a 'strongman' in the sky too transcendent to love or relate to humanity, be transformed by what they witness and experience of Christians finding and sharing grace through faith, assured of God's ear and his heart. May no Muslim be left unchanged.

Jesus said, 'For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.' (John 9:39 ESV)

* awaken the suffering-averse Church in the West to see and respond to the suffering Church before the Western Church's light is taken away.

CHRISTIANS AT THE MERCY OF ISIS IN UPPER MESOPOTAMIA

Last week, the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham/Syria (ISIS), which controls Raqqa (in Syria) and Anbar (in Iraq), advanced through Iraq's northern Nineveh Province, capturing Mosul city in a blitzkrieg. Since the US-led invasion in 2003, the growth of al-Qaeda elements in Mosul has seen the Christian population decline from 35,000 to 3,000. Amel Nona, Archbishop of Mosul, says now 'all the faithful have fled the city'. The whole province is affected. Whilst many Christian families have fled to local Christian churches, monasteries and schools, others have fled to the Kurdish capital of Erbil, which is being protected by Kurdish peshmerger forces. In Nineveh, as in Raqqa, ISIS is enforcing strict Sharia codes and enacting cruel Sharia punishments. The security and humanitarian situation is dire. Please pray.

* EGYPT: CHRISTIAN TEACHER FOUND GUILTY OF BLASPHEMY

An Egyptian court has sentenced a Christian woman, school teacher Demyana Abd al-Nour (25) to six-months' jail after finding her guilty of blasphemy. When Islamic activist parents who had targeted Demyana falsely accused her of blasphemy in April 2013, Demyana fled the country. The court ruling guarantees she will now spend her life in exile and at risk. The ruling bodes ill for Christians in Egypt.

* KENYA: AL-SHABAAB MASSACRES SOME 50 CHRISTIAN MEN

On Sunday evening 15 June, al-Shabaab jihadists flying the black flag and shouting Allahu Akbar (Allah is greater) invaded Kenya's coastal town of Mpeketoni, possibly with the aid of local political figures. They torched cars and properties and killed some 50 local men who identified themselves as Christian. 'They came to our house at around 8 pm and asked us in Swahili whether we were Muslims,' said resident Anne Gathigi (38). 'My husband told them we were Christians and they shot him in the head and chest.' According to Morning Star News, every church in the mostly Christian town has been affected. Al-Shabaab claimed the massacre was to avenge Kenya's military involvement in Somalia, and declared Kenya a 'war zone'.

* SYRIA: KESSAB LIBERATED

Kessab, an Armenian town near the border with Turkey seized by jihadists and ethnically cleansed in March [RLPB 253, 26 March 2014] was liberated by pro-government forces on 15 June.

Why a Grandparent’s Day of Prayer?

The Christian Grandparenting Network (CGN) recognizes that these are desperate, challenging times, both morally and spiritually, necessitating a widespread call to grandparents to pray for their grandchildren.

            Satan has launched an aggressive attack on all fronts using media, technology, education, social influences and political pressures to desensitize and cloud the boundaries of truth and righteousness that hold nations and families together. Perhaps at no other time in our history is a call to prayer more urgently required than it is to

9651011061?profile=original

day. Therefore, CGN is issuing a proclamation that September 7, 20

14 be designated a Grandparents Day of Prayer.

Grandparents responsibility

           God has entrusted grandparents with a sacred responsibility–the opportunity to impress upon another generation the message of God’s faithfulness grace, and to stand in the gap on their behalf through prayer and the power of Christ living through you. Taking this responsibility seriously means taking seriously the effectiveness of prayer to keep their hearts and minds from falling captive to the enemys deception. You are engaged in a spiritual battle that requires spiritual weapons of warfare.

For further information about the Grandparents Day of Prayer for yourself or your pastor, please contact Lillian Penner, CGN National Prayer Coordinator at lpenner@christiangrandparenting.net.

POOR IN SPIRIT

Our pastor is preaching through the Sermon on the Mount on Sunday mornings. A few weeks ago he preached on the first Beatitude, “Blessed are the poor in Spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.” He pointed out that the word translated “poor” here means to be destitute. It can be used for a beggar who is absolutely dependent upon help from others. Poverty of Spirit is the heart of prayer.

We come to God because our help, our strength, our hope of salvation, our very lives depend upon Him.

Spiritual poverty is the starting place for prayer. “God be merciful to me a sinner.”

Faith springs from spiritual poverty. “I come to You, Father because I know I cannot solve this problem. I cannot even understand the problems I face.”

The extent of my spiritual poverty is shown by the fact that I do not even know how to pray as I ought. I even depend on God’s Spirit to help me pray.

"Thank You, Lord, that You died for my spiritual poverty. Thank You, Father, for meeting my poverty with Your everlasting wealth."

FIGHTING A FLAWED LAW IN SCOTLAND

Religious Liberty Prayer Bulletin | RLPB 264 | Wed 11 Jun 2014

SCOTLAND: FIGHTING A FLAWED LAW

by Elizabeth Kendal

The Government of Sudan continues to wage war against its non-Arab, non-Muslim people, with the aim of annihilating the predominantly Christian Nuba peoples of oil-rich South Kordofan. In Nigeria, Boko Haram is waging a full-scale terrorist insurgency in the north-east, targeting Christian towns and enclaves, abducting and massacring dozens of civilians almost daily. In Syria, the Battle for Aleppo continues, with Armenian neighbourhoods - in particular Nor Kyugh - suffering endless rocket-fire from rebels, who are mostly international jihadists and Turks. In BREAKING NEWS, the ISIS has seized control in Mosul, the capital of Nineveh Province, Northern Iraq. Dozens are dead, at least 70 women have been abducted, some thousand Christian families have fled and the monasteries are filling up with refugees. [See Religious Liberty Monitoring for details.] With such serious conflicts raging like fire - consuming churches and whole Christian peoples - it can be easy to overlook or miss new threats rising like smoke signals on the horizon. While we must always be in prayer for Christians in lands where persecution is 'hot', we must also be alert so that, by God's grace, we might prevent new fires from spreading or even breaking out.

A law has been passed in Scotland that raises the prospect of a coming persecution. The Children and Young People (Scotland) Bill includes a mandate that the state appoint a 'Named Person' or state guardian for every single Scottish child under 18. It was passed by the Scottish Parliament on 19 February 2014 (103 for, with 15 abstentions) and it received Royal Assent on 27 March 2014. The scheme should be fully implemented by August 2016. With the aim of 'early intervention', each child will be monitored by a Named Person who will intervene (i.e. report to the authorities) if they have 'concerns' about the child's 'well-being'. For pre-school children, the Named Person could be a healthcare worker; for school-age children, the Named Person could be a school teacher. Named Persons will be obliged to report incidents as trivial as a missed doctor's appointment. Opponents of the scheme regard this as 'a monstrous invasion' of private family life that threatens to bring suspicion and mistrust into a whole range of relationships. It appears to be quite sinister, as home-schooler Alison Preuss points out, 'Under the guise of GIRFEC - "Getting it right for every child" - the government is getting information recorded on every citizen.'

The Christian Institute (CI) is preparing a legal challenge, receiving advice from Aidan O'Neill, a senior human rights lawyer and one of the UK's most eminent QCs. CI has promised to 'drag' the Scottish government through the courts 'in defence of family life against state intrusion'. O'Neil maintains that The Children and Young People (Scotland) Bill represents an 'unjustified interference' into private and family life while failing to provide proper protection against 'arbitrary and oppressive powers'. CI will argue that the legislation breaches the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), specifically Article 8 which guarantees a 'right to respect private and family life'. A 'No to Named Persons' (NO2NP) campaign [see http://no2np.org/ ] was officially launched on Monday 9 June, at a conference in Edinburgh organised by leading academic Dr Stuart Waiton. Waiton, a sociology professor at Abertay University, laments that the government 'appears to be blind' to the law's dangers.

It can be imagined readily how this law could become a weapon in the hands of anti-Christian elements, of state guardians with agendas and of all manner of social engineers. This law will turn state employees into informants to enforce state ideology and conservative Christian parents will be powerless to prevent it. The law is wide open for abuse. Is a child's 'well-being' threatened by home-schooling; or by parents who are seeking less invasive medical treatment; or by devout parents who teach that Jesus is the only Saviour or that God designed marriage to be between one man and one woman? Are children's 'well-being' at stake if they are set curfews, denied their 'sexual rights', and taken to church when they would rather play football? There are many who would say emphatically 'yes'. The Christian Institute has so far raised 30,000 British Pounds to fund the court action. Whilst currently it may not look like a religious liberty issue, the way is open for it to become one.

PLEASE PRAY SPECIFICALLY THAT GOD WILL -

* bless the Christian Institute and provide all its needs as it challenges this flawed law in the courts; may the law be repealed or amended before it does serious damage or is used as a model elsewhere.

* redeem this crisis and use this campaign for the awakening of many; may he use the NO2NP campaign not only to expose the flaws in the law, but to highlight the responsibilities and preciousness of family life as God intended.

Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down,
- that the mountains might quake at your presence ... Isaiah 64:1 ESV

* revive and empower the Church in Scotland - indeed across the UK - to be the light and salt it is called to be for the benefit of all.

[Jesus] put another parable before them, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.' (Matthew 13:13-32 ESV)

FIGHTING A FLAWED LAW IN SCOTLAND

A law has been passed in Scotland mandating that Scottish children under 18 be appointed a 'Named Person' or state guardian charged with monitoring their 'well-being'. Opponents of The Children and Young People (Scotland) Bill are describing it as 'a monstrous invasion' of private family life. The 'unjustified interference' comes without proper protection against 'arbitrary and oppressive powers'. A leading QC advises that the law breaches the European Convention on Human Rights (Article 8). A campaign - No to Named Persons (NO2NP) [http://no2np.org/ ] - was launched on 9 June. The Christian Institute is preparing a legal challenge. The law is wide open for abuse by social engineers and anti-Christian elements. Who are you praying for?

Throughout history God has brought about great movements that shook the earth with His Spirit by raising up a man whom He chose to use. God raised up Martin Luther, John Wesley, Evan Roberts, D.L. Moody and the like to bring about great revivals.

Are you familiar with the prayer meeting held on the Graham farm where young Billy Graham who had not yet accepted Christ as his Savior was in the barn pitching hay? Eighty years ago men gathered on the Graham property to pray for spiritual awakening. Praying together in May of 1934 one of the men suggested a bold prayer. They prayed for God to raise up a young man who would be used to take the gospel to the ends of the earth.

Can we pray again for God to raise up such a person who would turn the hearts of America to Him? Can we pray for God to raise up another Moses or Elijah, an Ezekiel or a Daniel for our day? We could pray like the men prayed eighty years ago on the Graham farm. God heard them. We could pray for God to raise such a person up in China, South America or Africa that would preach to the entire world. You could also be praying for young people you know who already sense God’s call on their lives. For some time I have been encouraging people to pray seminary students at the Pacific Northwest Campus of Golden Gate Seminary. Can you pray for a seminary campus near you? Are there such young people in your church or otherwise in your acquaintance? God has brought them to you to pray for them. What great thing might God bring about in our day if we ask Him?

HIMSELF
     by A. B. Simpson
Once it was the blessing, Now it is the Lord;
Once it was the feeling, Now it is His Word.
Once His gifts I wanted, Now the Giver own;
Once I sought for healing, Now Himself alone.

Once 'twas painful trying, Now 'tis perfect trust;
Once a half salvation, Now the uttermost.
Once 'twas ceaseless holding, Now He holds me fast;
Once 'twas constant drifting, Now my anchor's cast.

Once 'twas busy planning, Now 'tis trustful prayer;
Once 'twas anxious caring, Now He has the care.
Once 'twas what I wanted, Now what Jesus says;
Once 'twas constant asking, Now 'tis ceaseless praise.

Once it was my working, His it hence shall be;
Once I tried to use Him, Now He uses me.
Once the power I wanted, Now the Mighty One;
Once for self I labored, Now for Him alone.

Once I hoped in Jesus, Now I know He's mine;
Once my lamps were dying, Now they brightly shine.
Once for death I waited, Now His coming hail;
And my hopes are anchored, Safe within the vail.

As Simpson describes; prayer can be transformative to the life of each Christian. We often can begin praying with a specific motive, but end up refocused in relationship with Jesus, and finish praying with an entirely different motive, desire, or outcome.  He is that good to us and desires to meet us with that depth of intimacy!

Yet prayer, for many, is an afterthought in daily life.  Few consider praying until hardship strikes, or a circumstance gets out of their control.  It's only then that prayer becomes applicable or important in their lives.

Many are so lacking in practice that they struggle knowing how to pray, what to say, or how to approach God.  Some are unaware of the many examples of prayer in Scripture- or that Scripture can help us focus on God (more than ourselves or circumstances) as we pray.

In our American church culture, prayer is largely a spectator event.  Many churches treat prayer almost as an add-on in the service (a tradition that must be honored- at least for 1-3 minutes of a busy, tightly-packed, hour-long service/program/event), or at best, a specialized thing that only those who are "gifted in prayer" (there's no such thing as the spiritual gift of prayer) do in a small, separated room set apart from the rest of the hustling and bustling people in attendance.  A pastor or elder may "say or offer a prayer" in front of the congregation, but seldom, if ever, are the church attendees invited to pray or practice prayer with or for one another.  Is it any wonder that American Christianity is considered by many outside of the Church to be a toothless, weak, religion- and something that is just like every other religion or cult belief system in the world today?  Have you seen a "Coexist" bumper sticker, with symbols of many popular religions (including the use of the cross as the T in the word) on a car recently?  When you see that on a car, it essentially means, "Christianity is no different, more powerful, or life changing than any other belief system."  What a lie and misconception!

God's Gift of Prayer- Our Difference Maker

It's no question that many people, following other belief systems/faiths, pray to the gods of their imaginations.  By deception, the dark forces (demons) playing the role of god(s), will sometimes, or often, "answer" the prayers offered in the manner the person asks. They do this in order to further deepen the deception the misled praying person has opened him/herself up to receive.  The person will feel further empowered in their belief system and thus, their god(s) become real, meaningful, and powerful to them (or they, themselves, may feel powerful).  Yet, it's all a lie; they're praying to a lie and liar- Satan.

But Christian prayer is vastly different than prayer of any other religion or cult.  The difference comes from the People receiving and stirring the prayer within us- Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit (in case you're not aware; the Holy Spirit is a Person, not a thing; one of the Trinity- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit)!  Jesus is the only Person who died to take the sins of everyone upon Himself; to set each person free from sin and eternal separation from God; and to lead them into a personal, intimate, relationship with Himself, the Father, and through the working of the Holy Spirit.  It's by faith in Jesus; His work of living a perfect, sinless life; His death and taking the sins of all upon Himself; His resurrection from the dead; ascension into Heaven; and His upcoming return to establish His eternal kingdom, that we are saved.  No other god or belief system can bring us into a personal relationship with the Savior of our souls!  Only Jesus was given power (by God the Father) to rise from the dead, take away our sins which separate us from the Father, and establish us into a personal relationship with our Creator, Redeemer, Lord, and Savior.

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. - Ephesians 2:4-10

The Holy Spirit's Work

Since creation, the Holy Spirit has been actively wooing the hearts of men, women, and children, to seek and know God (and Jesus Christ, His Son)- often through prayer.  Whether people realize it or not; each day, they are given opportunities to realize God is in their midst (in truth, He's always present no matter where they are and no matter what they're doing- good or bad) and that He wants a close, ongoing relationship with them.  But those separated from God by their sin and sinful lifestyles miss His presence.  They're blinded by their sin, the world's ways, and our adversary, the devil.  The Holy Spirit is constantly working to bring conviction of sin to the heart, mind, and attention of the sinner (as a means to help them realize their need to turn toward God and away from sin, called repentance).  He does this in many ways- drawing the hearts of each person in ways that personally connect with their history, motives, desires, background, prior emotional, spiritual, or physical wounds, and much more.  He's the one working to soften hearts that have been hardened by sin, the world, and the devil.  The Holy Spirit is actively working out God's love- and is a constant reminder that God has not given up on a single living soul on this planet!

Yet, many have no idea that they're being pursued by God.  Some may, but reject God for one reason or another.  Others are confused by the "white noise" of all the religions bantering about to add to their numbers and practitioners- and thus many discard God as they give up altogether in their confusion.

Is the Holy Spirit too weak to turn the heart of every person to faith in Jesus Christ?  No.  He could; but God has given each person a will.  They can control it, make decisions, and choose to do whatever they please.  The Holy Spirit won't force Himself, or Jesus Christ, upon anyone who refuses Him.  He yields to their preferences and choices.  Ultimately, they choose whether they'll humble themselves or harden their hearts toward God.  The Holy Spirit patiently works and waits- even until the person's last breath of life on earth.  But if at that time they continue to reject Him, their eternity will be spent in Hell; permanently separated from God- just the way they ultimately chose or wanted it.

As Christ-followers, we can quickly forget that we were once in that position ourselves.

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. - Ephesians 2:1-3 (emphasis added)

What Do You Pray About Most?

What consumes most of your focus when you pray?

A church surveyed members of its prayer team asking what kinds of things they regularly prayed for.  Out of every 10 prayer requests or matters prayed for, 8 focused on personal events or requests (for things WE are doing, events WE are involved in, stuff WE are dealing with, etc).  While no matter is too small or inconsequential to take to the Lord in prayer, if we look at this ratio, that means less than 2 out of 10 prayers are focused on praying for specific people to come to faith in Jesus Christ; for missionaries that God has sent and/or is using to spread the gospel to others; for personal or corporate revival in the Church; worship of God Himself, etc.  Our prayers tend to be or become very self-centered if we're not watchful!

Praying for the Spiritually Blind to See

To help us focus outward, in alignment with the Spirit's work, and the salvation of others, we can begin doing these following things:

1.
Pray.  Ask God to bring to your mind 5-10 people who you know are without a personal relationship with Jesus, or who you're not sure if they have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

2.
  Write.  Write those names somewhere where they'll regularly remind you to pray.

3.  Pray.  Pray scripturally for each person by name- including their name within the Scripture as you pray.
*Examples:

I pray that the eyes of ________'s heart would be enlightened, so that he/she would know the hope that can be found in Jesus (Ephesians 1:18).

Remove the heart of stone from _________, and give him/her a new heart of flesh (Ezekiel 11:19).
Father, produce a godly sorrow in _________, which will bring about repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regrets (2 Corinthians 7:10).

Holy Spirit, guide _________ to the understanding that the wages of sin is death, but eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord is a free gift (Romans 6:23).

I pray that the gospel would be presented to _________, not only with words, but also with power and with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction (1 Thessalonians 1:5).

There are many other Scriptures you can pray as you search the Word.  I encourage you to do so!

As we pray for others, their lives and circumstances will change, and we'll also begin to fulfill Jesus' command in Matthew 6:20-21 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Prayer is a gift God has given us to bring us into deeper relationship with Himself, and also to bring others into relationship with Him as well.  As we pray, our lives are changed- as are the lives of those we pray for.

One Request

If you begin praying specifically for someone using the Scriptures listed above, or other Scriptures the Lord leads you to pray, would you write to me about how God changes you, and/or a person you pray for as you've prayed?  Stories of God changing lives (both within Christians and non-Christians) need to be told as encouragement to others.  Share these stories with others you know- as a testimony of Jesus' work in your life and in the lives of others!

Lord, continue to teach us to pray.

Amen.

LAOS: HIGH COST OF FAITH - plus update on North Korea

by Elizabeth Kendal

The Communist regime in Laos has long been committed to 'eliminating Christianity' which it regards as a 'foreign' religion linked to its enemies. [The Lao Hmong aided US troops against communist forces during the Second Indochina / Vietnam War, in which the US bombed Laos heavily. After the war, a massive crackdown on the Hmong saw most Christians flee Laos for the US.] For decades, severe, targeted and systematic persecution of the Hmong continued and has included even the use of chemical weapons (see RLM Oct 2003). While the situation has improved, Christianity is still regarded as a problem and a threat by both the government and local people. Christians are still being imprisoned for their faith - often constrained in shackles or stocks - and torture is endemic. The most common forms of persecution involve high-level pressure to abandon their faith, with sanctions commonly including forced eviction, denial of service and social exclusion. Despite all this, and due to the amazing witness of local believers, the Church continues to grow. In fact stories like this from 2012 are not uncommon: 'Another Christian was expelled from a village in Bolikhamsay Province (east of Vientiane) for "having made 300 villagers embrace the Christian faith" (UCA, 21 May 2014).' Yet, as Operation World 2010 notes: 'The remarkable growth of the church is still dwarfed by the size of the task remaining.' Only 3.4 percent of Laotians are Christians and the cost of faith can be high.

Many Laotian villagers follow traditional religions that involve continuously appeasing ancestral spirits so as to avert disasters such as storms and crop failures. Consequently, Christians who refuse to engage in traditional religion are viewed as a threat to village prosperity. Village chiefs are enlisted to evict Christians from the village. Content to see the Christians persecuted, government authorities do not defend the rights of Christians but rather will exploit any opportunity to arrest them. Washington think-tank Freedom House ranks Laos as the least free country in South-East Asia and second only to North Korea in East Asia. According to one rights group that monitors Laos, dozens of Christians remain behind bars for practising their faith. Persecution is most intensive in the fertile highlands of Savannakhet Province.

On 11 May 23 Christians were detained in Paksong Village in Songkhone district, Savannakhet Province after being arrested for meeting in what authorities said was an 'unauthorised' location. Twelve were released after signing documents agreeing not to meet there again but eleven remain in prison. It seems the former village chief had given the Christians permission to meet but the new village chief had not.

On 20 May the chief of Saisomboon village in Atsaphangthong district of Savannakhet Province deemed that by becoming Christians, three female students had forfeited their right to an education. Noi (15), Net (15) and Nut (14) have been told they will not be permitted to sit their exams. Local Christian leader, Mrs Kaithong, has since appealed the case to the Atsaphangthong district education chief, who is negotiating with the school's director.

On Sunday 25 May police raided the home of Pastor Phupet in Donpalai village, Atsaphangthong district, where some 80 believers had gathered for worship. After abusing and intimidating the believers, the police confiscated 53 Bibles. This police raid occurred without the consent of the village chief.

On 29 May Lao police, under the order of the Loynam village chief, seized a Christian man, Sort (40), from his home in Nong district, Savannakhet Province. Sort was tied to a pole and publicly mocked and berated for refusing to recant his faith. About one year ago, Sort, along with his wife and two children, became the first family to embrace the Christian faith in the whole sub-district of Nathorn. The police had been trying to coerce Sort to renounce his faith since 15 May, when they threatened to confiscate all his property. At that time, Sort told them, 'I've embraced the Christian faith over a year and I have not broken any law!' Even after they confiscated Sort's savings, he still refused to recant. So on 29 May, after publicly humiliating Sort, they arrested him for refusing to renounce his faith in Jesus Christ. Sort is now being held in the Nong district prison.

HIGH COST OF FAITH IN NORTH KOREA [Updating RLPB 251 (11 March)]

On Friday 30 May a court in Pyongyang sentenced South Korean Baptist missionary Kim Jung-wook (50) to a life of hard labour. Kim had been found guilty in February on charges of espionage, anti-government agitation, and setting up an underground religious institution. Reportedly the North Korean defence attorney requested that the court commute the death sentence demanded by prosecutors on the grounds that Kim 'sincerely repented of his crimes and apologised for them'. The severity of Kim Jung-wook's sentence puts Pyongyang in a strong bargaining position with South Korea and it should discourage internal dissent also. As one high-ranking defector told DailyNK (2 June), Kim Jong-un 'is showing that he is going to eradicate any element capable of changing the people's consciousness and preserve systemic integrity'. In April 2013 Korean-American missionary Kenneth Bae was sentenced to 15 years' hard labour on similar charges. When North Korean Christians are found practising Christianity they are executed and their extended families are sent to the gulag.

PLEASE PRAY SPECIFICALLY THAT -

* all Christians suffering in Laotian prisons will know the comforting presence of Jesus Christ who promised 'behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age' (Matthew 28:20b ESV); may God restrain their captors and open their eyes to recognise righteousness and their hearts to receive the Gospel.

* Noi, Net, Nut and other Christian students will not be denied an education because of their faith in Christ; may God bless and work through the advocacy and witness of Christian leader Mrs Kaithong. 'Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us ...' (Ephesians 3:20 ESV)

* God will bless Pastor Phupet and his 80-strong house church in Donpalai village; may he supply more Bibles and continue to build his Church there. [Aid groups including Open Doors, Voice of the Martyrs, Bible League etc raise funds to facilitate provision of Bibles.]

* God will pour out his Holy Spirit (Joel 2:25-32) in generous abundance on Laos' capital city, Vientiane, so that, just as in Beijing (China), Christians might be found at every level of society, ready for when God brings freedom to their land. [NB: 4 June is the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, an event that led many Beijing professionals and elites to abandon communism and embrace the Gospel. Today Beijing has Christians at every level of society.]

PLEASE ALSO PRAY FOR -

* South Korean Baptist missionary Kim Jung-wook, Korean-American missionary Kenneth Bae and the tens of thousands of North Korean Christians incarcerated for their faith in North Korea; may God preserve them and end this wicked regime's reign of terror.

SUMMARY TO USE IN BULLETINS UNABLE TO RUN THE WHOLE ARTICLE

HIGH COST OF FAITH IN LAOS & NORTH KOREA

Despite some improvement in recent years, persecution continues to bring great suffering to Laos' small but growing Christian community. The Communist government views Christianity as a 'foreign' religion linked to its enemies (mainly the US). Local residents who practise Buddhism and traditional religions view Christians as a threat to social order. Persecution commonly involves forced eviction, denial of service and social exclusion. Furthermore, Christians who continue to witness and refuse to recant their faith in Jesus Christ are arrested and imprisoned in shocking conditions where torture is routine. Please pray for the Church in Laos. Pray also for the Church in North Korea where on 30 May, South Korean Baptist missionary Kim Jung-wook was sentenced for life with hard labour, and where tens of thousands of Christians are incarcerated.

THE VINE AND THE BRANCHES

The Vine and the Branches

15 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. 17 This is my command: Love each other.

Branches can not live without vine. So we also as Jesus desciples can not live without Jesus. Jesus command us to be fruitfull. But if we live outside Jesus than we can not be fruitfull.

It looks like simple to be fruitful than live in Jesus. And His Words dwell in us. It is so simple, isn’t it ? But it will be very difficult to practise it. Cause we still live in this sinful world. Our sins still have power in our life. So Jesus gave command that we can not do ?

Jesus clearly said that outsite Him, we do nothing. So just follow His command. We just live in Him ! How it looks like ? It talks about our relationship with Jesus. Do we have spent enough time with Him trough daiky devotion, reading Bible , pray, etc ?

So so simple, let’s we live in Jesus and His Words dwell in us.

FAITH AND GRATEFUL HEART

LUK 17:11-19

Jesus Heals Ten Men With Leprosy

11 Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy[b] met him. They stood at a distance 13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!”

14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed.

15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.

17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”

Faith should follow with take action and and a grateful heart. We learn from above verses how those lepers got healed and what did they do next after they realised that they have cured.  These 10 leper asking for healing from leprosy.

Have a pity on us. These words are these lepers said to Jesus. Have a pity on us or have a mercy on us are the words that we as a believer  have rarely use in our pray to Jesus. We should aware that eventhough we have many years follow Jesus. This not make us  free from sins. We just like a dust in front of His eyes. Only trough His mercies we consider  deserve in front of Him. Have a mercy on us should we not forget in our pray to Jesus. As probably we have done any sins that we are not aware.

Let’s take a look what Jesus did after He hear from these 10 lepers. Jesus said  “go to show yourselves to the priest !”  For us maybe His command is a simple way to follow. He did not command to do a difficult way. But if we aware the context at that time, in Jews society, leprosy is sign of sin or dirty. So they need FAITH to follow His command. And the result is on thier way to the Prieset, they were cleansed. In our spiritual journey to follow Jesus, many of His command that we did not understand. We tend to rejected it. But if we obey, then there is a reward for us cause obeying Him. His plan is beyond our thinking, His way is above our way. His love to us is more deeper than the ocean. So just obey Him ! Cause He know the best for us.

When they were cleansed, only one go back to Jesus to give thanks to Jesus. This grateful atitude is the sign if we have faith on Him. As in verse ” 19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”, we can see Jesus  show a grateful atitude is important. Nowdays “thank you” is a difficult word to say in our societies.  Thank you as sign that we respect to other.  To have a grateful heart means we admit that God rule upon us.  Faith follow with a grateful heart as a package that we are the desciples of Jesus.

WATCHING IN PRAYER 2

  Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. [1]

Psalm 37:4 is a particular treasure for every believer. Have you discovered wonders as you have thought about this verse this week? I would like to hear what you discovered. Last week I focused on choosing to delight. Now I want you to see that this verse calls us to delight in the Lord Himself.

DELIGHT IN THE PERSON OF THE LORD.

We ought to rejoice in His majesty. We should rejoice in His mighty power. We should rejoice in His holiness. We should rejoice in His wonderful Grace. You have sung God Is So Good, haven’t you? He is good and gracious and lovely and majestic. He is wonderful!

DELIGHT IN THE PURPOSE OF THE LORD.

Have you ever thought what a great privilege it is for God to reveal His will to you? You may say, “But I do not know God’s will for my life.” You do not know all of it. But you know something that is God’s will for you. And as you obey what He has already shown you, He will show you more.

DELIGHT IN THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD.

If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, God dwells in your life. What is more, when we gather together as believers He is present in our fellowship. Can you imagine how the disciples felt when Jesus first appeared to them? They were locked in the upper room for fear of the authorities who had crucified Jesus when the Lord appeared in their midst. He is with us when we gather as believers. And the Holy Spirit dwelling in you ministers to me, and visa-versa. We celebrate together in His glorious presence!”

Discover Grandparents Greatest Gift

9651015083?profile=originalPrayer is the greatest and lasting gift we can give our families. Material things are needed but they are temporary. Our prayers can be lasting and will have a ripple effect to our grandchildren and future generations.

I found a letter in my family archives written by my great-grandfather in Poland to my grandfather who had immigrated to America. In the letter, he wrote that he was praying for my grandfather and his future generations. What a blessing it was for me to see in writing that my great-grandfather had prayed for me before I was born.  His prayers had a ripple effect on my life and my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

As grandparents, let’s deliberately pray for our children and grandchildren. As we invest in our own walk with the Lord, we are investing in the lives of our grandchildren and future generations. Let’s watch the ripple effect in our families, just as our grandkids enjoy the ripple effect when they throw rocks into the water.

Ask yourself:

ï What kind of spiritual impact do I have on my family members?

ï Am I leaving a ripple effect with my prayers for my family?

You can make a ripple effect on your family by participating and encouraging other grandparents to make the National Grandparents Day on September 7 a Day of Prayer for your grandchildren and their parents. For additional information go to www.grandparentsdayofprayer.com.
