Pray with Thanksgiving - Connection! (Devotions for Every Day Life)

Pray with Thanksgiving

Posted: 18 Nov 2010 01:00 AM PST

“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:18).

It’s hard for us to thank God while making our requests, for two reasons. First, because we are so focused on the need, we often wrestle with anxiety. Secondly, we typically thank someone after they’ve done something, not before. When it comes to effective prayer, thanksgiving is to both precede and follow God’s response.

Thanking God in advance for doing what you’re asking Him to do is an expression of your expectancy. It’s evidence that you’re anticipating measurable results from your prayer. When my wife Alice was pregnant with our children, we said, “She is expecting.” When you are praying in faith with pre-thanksgiving, you are praying expectantly. You expect to see God answer your prayer in an observable, verifiable way.

Our faith and thanksgiving are not based on what we see. They are based upon God’s character (who He is, what He’s done in the past, and what He’s promised to do in the future). We’re to walk by faith, not by sight.

–Adapted from Giving Ourselves to Prayer: An Acts 6:4 Primer for Ministry (Chapter 39, The Secret of Single-Minded Prayer by Eddie Smith). Click on the title for more information about this resource.

Lord Jesus, there are days when my ungrateful heart needs to be lifted to a higher level of faith and expectancy. Teach me to be filled with grateful anticipation as I await Your response to prayers that are filled with faith! Thank You for showing me how to line up my prayers with the Father, as You did when You walked on this earth! May I have a heart that is filled with gratitude that the God of the Universe cares for me, and desires to use me to accomplish His plans in this lost and hurting world.

Prayer Points
Praise God for the good gifts he gives to those who ask him (Mt. 7:11). Give thanks, even in the midst of pain all around, that God’s gifts are good. Confess your lack of quality time spent with God in prayer (Rom. 8:26). Commit yourself to modeling Jesus’ example of praying in solitary places (Mk. 1:35). Ask God to give you a real devotion to prayer—being watchful and thankful, making the most of every opportunity (Col. 4:2-5).

Ask God to use emergency or crisis situations in the lives of unsaved people to bring them to the foot of the cross. Pray for eyes to see how you can help in such situations.

Prayer Pointer
“One of the most common weaknesses of our prayer lives is the vagueness of our focus. . . . Petition saves us from that. It forces us to be specific, to be precise, to clarify our wants and desires.” —Maxie Dunnam

Why it is "Good" to Give Thanks!

Every Sunday morning for over 20 years, with very few exceptions, I've been privileged to gather with a group of prayer partners to read a Psalm then spend an hour in worship-based prayer. The worship in the word is sweet and the Spirit always guides us as we take time to specifically focus on prayers for the Sunday services of the church and all God wants to do through them.

Recently, we enjoyed an hour of prayer from Psalm 92. The first verse of the Psalm is very familiar but, as often happens, struck me in a fresh way. It reads:

“It is good to give thanks to the LORD, and to sing praises to Your name, O Most High; To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning, and Your faithfulness every night.” Psalm 92:1-2

Maybe it is just me, but I am noticing that during these ever-difficult days in our nation, people are either responding with a deeper gratitude for the simple blessings of life or they are lapsing into grumbling about how tough things are. One thing is clear; it is still GOOD to give thanks to the Lord, even in 2010 – especially in these very challenging times.

But why?

I have considered the reasons it is good to give thanks to the Lord. I see a HEAVENWARD reason, an INWARD reason, a BACKWARD reason and a FORWARD reason.

A Heavenward Adoration

With a HEAVENWARD view, it is truly good to give thanks to the Lord – because in our gratitude we again recognize the priority and power of God’s glorious and unchanging character. Our financial security, family situation and personal health may be uncertain – but He never changes. When we give thanks, our hearts and minds are “renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created” us.

In gratitude we remember that while life may feel bad, God is still good – all the time. When thankful, we can rejoice in the name of the Most High God who is sovereign, just, gracious, merciful and true - -in spite of the earthly forecast. As Psalm 92:2 says, “To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning and Your faithfulness every night.” Gratitude makes our theology real and practical every day.

An Inward Transformation

From an INWARD standpoint, it is good to give thanks to the Lord because it changes us. Isaiah 26:3 reminds us, “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” Gratitude promotes peace in the midst of the storm. “Whatever my lot – Thou has taught me to say, ‘It is well’ with my soul.” We are able to count our blessings rather than complain about our burdens. Anticipation can replace anxiety and worship can replace worry when we realize how good it is to give thanks.

Psalm 107:22 declares, “Let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare His works with rejoicing. “ Just as Old Testament sacrifices were accompanied by thanksgiving, so we sometimes have to sacrifice in order to give thanks. We sacrifice our self-trust, human reason, personal expectations, disappointments and even our very real pain in the midst of trials. We come to our Living God and say “thank you” in faith. The result is that we are able to declare His works with joy. Joy is an abiding well-being that transcends circumstances because is it rooted in spiritual reality. Truly, gratitude rearranges the interior of my troubled and doubting heart.

A Backward Recognition

From a BACKWARD angle, it is good to give thanks for the Lord because we recognize the pattern of His wonderful works in our life. Christians can be very forgetful, just like nine of the ten lepers in Luke 17:11-19 who never came back to thank Jesus for healing their bodies. One returned to receive a healing of soul in his worshipful gratitude.

Psalm 107 repeats the call five times, “Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! “ (vv. 1, 8, 15, 21 & 31). Reflect on His wonderful works in the story of your life. What has He done for you? Can you see the pattern of His faithfulness and care? Don’t forget all He has done. His past works will change the way you look at your present situation and your future path.

A Forward Anticipation

Finally, it is good to give thanks to the Lord from a FORWARD standpoint. We learn that some things in this life simply cannot be trusted. The Stock Market. Politicians. Big business. Media. People. Ourselves. But, when we give thanks we are reminded in the One in whom we can trust for the next chapter of life. “Because He lives, I can face tomorrow. Because He lives, all fear is gone. Because I know He holds the future, then life is worth the living just because He lives.” If the living God is good, has been good – the He will be good with every step I take into the future.

God’s Good Will

Hebrews 13:15 gives this command to our hearts, “Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.” Also, 1 Thessalonians 5:18 is clear, “in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

So, God’s good will for your life is to give thanks – and there are many reasons to do it. Let the fruit of your lips give thanks to His name today. By Jesus Christ, and through His life in you, it can happen – and it will be good. He has promised.

Come Out of the Stronghold
By Os Hillman

November 18

"...Do not stay in the stronghold. Go into the land of Judah ..." (1 Samuel 22:5).

David and his fighting men had been hiding in the cave of Adullam. He was fleeing Saul. Many of life's down-and-out had come and joined David's army. David was content to stay in the stronghold of safety. Then, God's prophet came to David and told him that he must leave the stronghold and go into the land of Judah. Judah means "praise."

When life beats down on us and we get to the place where we want to hide in a cave, God often places people around us who prod us into moving in the right direction. He does not want us to remain in the place of discouragement. He wants us to move into the land of praise.

I recall when I went through a very difficult time. It seemed to drag on and on with no change until finally I wanted to retreat to a cave and forget pressing on. It was a great time of discouragement. A godly man came to me and said, "You must keep moving! There are too many who are depending on you in the Kingdom."

I didn't totally understand what he meant at the time. Now I know he was saying that God is preparing each of us to be the vessel He wants to use in the life of another person, but we will never be that vessel if we give up and hide in our cave of discouragement. Not only must we keep moving, we must move into a new realm. Our attitude must move from discouragement to praise.

"He has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners - to comfort all who mourn. ... a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor" (Isa 61:1-3).

It is only when we move past discouragement to praise that we begin living above our problems. Make a decision today to go into the land of Judah.

I Began the Day with Jesus

I Began the Day with Jesus

I began this day with the Master

Today he came first and everything else after

Opening up to him about all my reality

I got right into it and told him about me personally.

He tend to always know everything before I share

But I feel better when I tell him even though he was there

I often go into a tell all tale

All the little secrets I begin to unveil.

At times when I'm done I think, 'girl that's so messed up.'

He smiles and say, 'Oh I've heard so much worse.'

Then he reminds me that once forgiven he remembers no more

And on that note I can rest assure.

However, there are times when he has to assure, secure and advise,

Even tell me no but never tell me why

So to say the least, we get along very well

He is my Friend, my Brother and yes the greatest Father.

He highly recommends that I use the talents that he has given me daily

Knowledge, understanding, counsel and wisdom

And not seek my own strength or handle matters prematurely.

Psalm 67:1, 2

God, be merciful to us and bless us; look on us with kindness, so that the whole world may know your will; so that all nations may know your salvation.

Why is it so easy to pray from the first part of this petition but more difficult to add the second half?

Maybe it is because to desire the second half, we need to give-up on some of what we typically associate with the first half.

A Season for Real Change

Today’s Americans are not the first to cry out for change, or to welcomea radical shift in focus. Discontentment is at our core, currentlywoven into the very fabric of who we are as a nation, and echoing thesentiments that first brought pilgrims to these shores. Ourdisenchantment with the abuse of power, and our restlessness withcultural decadence are simply symptoms of national discontent—a desirefor something more; a longing for higher standards and true meaning.

This is nothing new. We have been down this road before.

Take America’s celebration of Christmas, one of our nation’s moresurprising examples of cultural change. A few hundred years ago, thePuritans were so disturbed by materialistic practices influencing theChristmas traditions of their time—the blatant celebration of excess,the distortion of biblical truth—that they demanded reform. Theyexpressed their discontentment with the course of their culture andchose to steer their communities on a different path, even outlawing thecelebration in Boston to help restore godly conduct and perspective.The change took place gradually, and it wasn’t until 1870 that Christmasbecame a federal holiday—a turning point that marked a long journeytoward family-oriented traditions and a heightened reverence for Christand His birth.

Only 140 years later, we are drifting in our focus once again. Culturaland political distortions overwhelm us on all sides. As we consider howto intercede for our nation today, with all of its potential for changeand transformation, our prayer must be that any renewed discontentmentwould drive us to embrace an attitude of reverence for God. Without thisas our foundation, real change will never come. Regardless of who wasjust elected or which party is in control, we must intercede that anattitude of reverence and humility would affect everything from personalbehavior to federal law.

May the Church fall upon her knees and cry out to God for mercy, that wewould be known as a country with restored reverence for Christ, who isboth our Cause and our Celebration. What a true gift of change thiswould bring!

“The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility” (Proverbs 15:33).

This is a Devotion I'm sharing by way of one of my online buddies.... enjoy.

Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able

to stand against the wiles of the devil. Ephesians 6:10

Opposition comes; and it comes in many different ways. We must remember however that God is greater than any situation. He has given us our weapons of warfare. They are not your traditional weapons of war. We don't seek revenge we seek truth. We don't have to defend ourselves for we are covered in the blood of Jesus Christ and He is our righteousness, and our defense. The Holy Spirit fills us with the word of God and causes us to remember exactly what we need to do in the heat of battle. We love and strive for peace instead of hate and bitterness. Our faith protects us. Not one arrow shot in our direction is able to destroy us. The Holy Spirit comes into our battle with a flaming sword and cuts through the darkness and prevents the enemy from breaking through.

We don't need to summon great armies, ***for our prayers summon the greatest authority.***

Our salvation through Jesus Christ has placed us in an army that always wins. Not with guns, or words but with the truth of Jesus Christ dwelling within us. When our enemy comes at us with all that He has, we have no need to fear but only to run into the arms of Jesus. He exposes every scheme and tactic and renders them useless. With Jesus we will stand.

***NO weapon formed against us shall prosper.***

Today (November 11, 2010) is Veterans Day, which is also known as Armistice or Remembrance Day. It commemorates the agreement signed to end World War I. It took effect at the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918. It became known as Veterans Day when, in 1954 under President Eisenhower, it was expanded to celebrate all US Veterans. If you have served in the armed forces, thank you so much for your service. It mattered when you served, and it still does. Reflecting on Veterans Day caused me to remember and be freshly thankful for some of the “Prayer Summit Veterans” I am aware of. It was 20 years ago, this month, that I attended the first Pastors Prayer Summit for the Pierce County, WA pastors. That event changed my life and is still changing it. At the risk of missing some I should also mention, I want to remember some of those who, with their lives, signed an agreement, not to end a conflict, but to “fight the good fight” of seeing the Church of Jesus Christ experience renewed for greater impact across the Pacific Northwest and eventually, around the world.

DrJoe_webOf course, it starts with Dr. Joe Aldrich. When he became president of Multnomah School of the Bible in 1978 (now Multnomah University) he had a burden to bring a greater sense of renewal to the Church of the Pacific Northwest. This caused him to ask the question, “What would it take to see a move of God initiated and sustained in a geographic area?” This question eventually led him to invite pastors to get away for four days just to seek God for what His desires were for them and their communities. In February of 1989 the first Prayer Summit took place. Within a few short years it spread not only across the nation but around the world.

Terry DirksTerry Dirks was with Dr. Joe from the beginning. As a staff member of Multnomah, he helped implement and shape the movement until his death in 1999. Joe had given him responsibility to oversee the movement and under his sensitive direction both before and after Dr. Joe’s retirement in 1997, it continued to impact thousands of pastors.

Dick Palmer, a retired dentist (and Navy Veteran) with a great heart and calling to come along side pastors heard about what was happening. He volunteered his time to serve Joe, Terry and the growing movement. The first time I facilitated a summit was with Dick, in February of 1993.

Bob Cryder and Dave Cetti soon became an integral part of the team as did Lee Brase. These men not only traveled and facilitated summits, but they also met and prayed often to help discern how God wanted it to proceed.

Don Stern, a friend of Terry’s from his days in Yakima, was asked to come and join the team. For more than 10 years Don not only provided administrative service, but became well known for his love for Jesus and heart for pastors.

Tom White heard about Prayer Summits, attended one, knew he was called to this kind of ministry, and began facilitating summits in both the states and in many other nations.

Dave Halbert responded to an invitation from Terry Dirks to begin to facilitate summits and soon found himself traveling not only the states, but in other countries sharing the vision and equipping future facilitators.

jody_web 2 3 As the pastors were blessed at summits, there became both a desire and need for women’s summits. Jane Brown (Dr. Joes’ sister) and Jody Mayhew were called upon to provide leadership in this realm. Thousands of women have been blessed because of the groundwork they laid and their ministry since.

These “veterans” planted sees that are still sprouting. They forged a path that many people are still walking. Their stories have produced many other stories. The questions asked years ago are being answered in some wonderful ways. People are still encountering Jesus in personal and powerful ways. They are not only understanding the power of unity, they are walking in that power.

I am grateful to all those “veterans” who have and are still serving the King!

INTERCESSORS NOTE

As you pray this month, please take some time and express thanks to the Lord for who He is and all He has done! This could well be the most significant part of your time of prayer!

I would also ask you to pray for the other summits that have just completed or will be taking place soon. See the IRM Calendar for details.

When you receive this note, I will be a few days into a 10 day Israel trip. If I have a title on this trip, it would be “spiritual director.” I will be facilitating prayer at several sites to make the trip more as personal as possible. I would appreciate your prayers so that our prayers will be most effective.

From Nov 18 – 25 I will be teaching on individual and corporate prayer at Holsby Brun (a Bible School in Southern Sweden). Please pray that the 40 students plus staff (as well as myself!) will be greatly impacted as we interact with the Holy Scriptures guided by the Holy Spirit.

Finally, please pray for the 8th annual Pacific Northwest City Impact Roundtable, Dec 6-7.

Voices Together: Psalm 119:142-144

Psalm 119:142-144
Your righteousness is righteous forever, and your law is true. Trouble and anguish have found me out, but your commandments are my delight. Your testimonies are righteous forever; give me understanding that I may live.

Righteous forever! Your righteousness and Your testimonies! A perfect North Star to guide me, never obscured by clouds only by vision dimmed by unwillingness. Where ever I go, where ever I am, no matter what the situation I am in, if I look to Your Word, it is righteous and true, never failing, the source of wisdom and understanding.

Voices Together: Psalm 37:12-33

Psalm 37:12-33
The wicked plots against the righteous and gnashes his teeth at him, but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he sees that his day is coming. The wicked draw the sword and bend their bows to bring down the poor and needy, to slay those whose way is upright; their sword shall enter their own heart, and their bows shall be broken. Better is the little that the righteous has than the abundance of many wicked. For the arms of the wicked shall be broken, but the LORD upholds the righteous. The LORD knows the days of the blameless, and their heritage will remain forever; they are not put to shame in evil times; in the days of famine they have abundance. But the wicked will perish; the enemies of the LORD are like the glory of the pastures; they vanish--like smoke they vanish away. The wicked borrows but does not pay back, but the righteous is generous and gives; for those blessed by the LORD shall inherit the land, but those cursed by him shall be cut off. The steps of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the LORD upholds his hand. I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread. (26) He is ever lending generously, and his children become a blessing. Turn away from evil and do good; so shall you dwell forever. For the LORD loves justice; he will not forsake his saints. They are preserved forever, but the children of the wicked shall be cut off. The righteous shall inherit the land and dwell upon it forever. The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks justice. (31) The law of his God is in his heart; his steps do not slip. The wicked watches for the righteous and seeks to put him to death. The LORD will not abandon him to his power or let him be condemned when he is brought to trial.

The reward that is promised here is if I turn away from evil and seek Your face. To be upheld by You, to be kept from shame in times of great evil and to enjoy the abundance of Your provision in times of famine, to know that I inherit the Kingdom of Heaven, to know that when I trip You are there to catch me and keep me from stumbling, that my children will be cared for by You, that the word of my mouth are Your wisdom and Your justice, that Your law is written in my heart, and that You will not abandon me to the power of the wicked. Praise You, Lord.

Voices Together: Psalm 37:1-11

Psalm 37:1-11
Of David. Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers! For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb. Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices! Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil. For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the LORD shall inherit the land. In just a little while, the wicked will be no more; though you look carefully at his place, he will not be there. But the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace.

Oh, this is hard, Lord, it is so much easier to fret. To continue to trust in You as the world collapses around me, to continue to carry out Your directives for my life in the face of trials and temptations. To watch others live lives of idleness as You lay out areas of ministry for Betty and I. But the joy of being with You and in Your will far exceeds the temptations of the world.

Orality & Unengaged Unreached People Groups (UUPG) that may be two entirely new terms for you! If that is the case or if you have heard these terms but want to find out more, then this blog may help you.

UUPG's are groups of people who have less than 2% known Christians in their people group AND no known evangelical work among them to bring the Gospel to them... they have no portion of scripture, no gospel recordings/radio or no Jesus Film available in their heart language.

The group that I work with International Orality Network (ION) seeks to influence the body of Christ to make disciples of all (4.35 billion) oral learners.

Are you aware that 2/3 of the world or some say 70% are oral learners. An oral learner is one who does not, cannot and will not read. They come from oral cultures. Since they do not read, you will need to use a different format than literacy to reach them initially. Tracts unless in picture form, will not be received. We must change the way that we present the Gospel to a format that they can really hear and understand.

Orality is a wide stroke and encompasses many different formats. The most widely understood form is called “storying.” Simply telling the stories of the bible. Orality can be songs, art forms, media, multimedia, film, or various formats. The ultimate goal of orality it to get the Gospel to them in a culturally appropriate way.

To begin your journey to understand these new terms and this new ORALITY movement, take a half an hour and watch this session from Call2All where Paul Eshleman explains what this is all about. Paul talks about Unengaged Unreached People Groups, this session was recorded by GodTV at the very first Call2All.org Congress.

Food for thought... did you know that 2 billion of the 4.35 billion oral learners are children?

International Orality Network - Influencing the body of Christ to make disciples of all (4.35 billion) oral learners - PRAY for the children represented in this number...

Unengaged Unreached People Groups (UUPGs)

Right now there are still over 6,000 unreached people groups in the world. (An unreached people group being one with less than 2% evangelical Christian believers.)

Astonishingly there are 3,400 people groups who are not only unreached, but no one is even trying to reach them.
Mission strategists call them “unengaged.”

After 2,000 years, it should be unthinkable to us as the
church of Jesus Christ
that there would be any unengaged people groups left in the world. Finishing the Great Commission can be defined in different ways, but what is most important is that we start to finish the task. It will be accomplished primarily through local congregations planting indigenous churches among the people groups they adopt.

The 639 unreached, unengaged people groups referred to in this video is the number of UUPG's with populations above 100,000. The rest of the 2,700 groups have less than 100,000 people.

To help you understand an “Introduction to Orality and the International Orality Network”

I have put together several articles that were taken off the internet... each is individually noted.

This following first portion was taken from the Orality section of the Call2All.org website.

ION is a founding partner with Call2All.org www.Call2All.org

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
International Orality Network
The International Orality Network is an alliance of mission leaders partnering together to make God’s Word available to all oral learners in culturally appropriate ways.
ION relates to the Lausanne Committee on World Evangelization and is committed to provide oral strategies to communicate the gospel, make disciples, train leaders and enable church planting movements among all peoples in ways that are reproducible by oral peoples.
It’s task forces are directed by world missions leaders representing Wycliffe International; International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention; Campus Crusade; Trans World Radio; Epic Partners; Hosanna/Faith Comes By Hearing; Discipling A Whole Nation; The God’s Story Project; The Jesus Film Project; Progressive Vision; The Seed Company; Scriptures in Use (SIU); visionSynergy and Youth with a Mission. All hold to the principles of the power of the spoken Word of God, the progressive revelation of Scripture, cultural relevance, and telling God’s story to all peoples in reproducible ways.
A Story worth telling
Imagine a people group with no written language. There are 2700 in this situation. Imagine communities with no access to the Gospel. There are 2.8 billion who have not heard.
Part of Call2All’s strategy to reach these people with the Good News is by sharing the Bible through story form.
Cultures that have no written language rely very heavily on story to record their past and to teach the next generation. They have an amazing memory capacity to remember details in stories, and when trying to understand a concept, will bring in a story to give explanation.
Samuel Chiang, Global Director for the International Orality Network. The Orality Network’s aim is to make disciples of all oral learners. Through the Network Samuel has seen significant success in bringing the Bible alive to unreached people groups.
He explains how it works: “Once you have identified the people group you want to reach, who have no scripture and no written language, you must first understand their worldview."
Then fifty to sixty Bible stories are prepared and crafted to engage in the world view of the culture. For example if the community has a matriarchal society, somewhere you need to address and respect that culture. The best way to do this is to bring out Bible stories that they will connect with, the Old Testament stories of Esther and Ruth for instance.
Alternatively if the culture has high regard for the spirit world, and evil spirits are revered, then to tell the story of Jesus delivering the demoniac in Luke 8 would have a huge impact.
The key is to identify barriers, gaps and bridges between the story teller and those listening, so that what is being said will have the greatest impact.
Jesus was the greatest story-teller, following His example we can change the lives of those who cannot read by telling them a story. Log on next week to hear how sharing the Gospel in story form has changed communities around the world.
67% of People are Non-Literate Oral Learners
The Challenges Print Evangelism Ministries Face In Meeting The Needs Of Oral Cultures
By Avery Willis and James Greenelsh
What do you think Mr. Guttenberg?
The year was 1488. A young boy accidentally left a wooden shape dripping with dye on a piece of parchment overnight. In the morning he discovered an image remaining after removing the wood. It was an “aha moment” that led to the invention of the printing press. That one insight changed the world we live in. The boys name, Johann Guttenberg. His idea lit the fuse on a literacy revolution that supercharged the field of knowledge. The bible finally came within reach of the common man. Christianity in Europe flourished. For over 500 years since then the Church in western societies has trumpeted the superiority of literacy.
I had thought for so long that the Guttenberg revolution was a worldwide phenomenon. I grew up thinking that literacy was the one thing the world needed to level the playing field for everyone.
Then one day, I made an alarming discovery: 500 years after the invention of the printing press—only 33% of the world are truly literate.
That single fact stopped me dead in my tracks. A banner headline. Extra. Extra. Read all about it:
Approximately 67% of the people of the world are non-literate oral learners.
If you printed that headline in every newspaper in every country of the world, in every language known to man and you threw it on the coffee table of every home on earth— close to four billion people couldn’t read it.
That should get our attention.
Let me ask you, if you had a business and you found that 67% of your target audience were non-literate oral learners, you can bet you’d tailor your business plan, dedicate your work force, and allocate a huge portion of your operating budget especially to reach them. That’s just smart business.
The world of missions is just now waking up to the fact that Oral learners are at the center of the firestorm to complete the Great Commission. The bull’s eye. Imagine. Four billion oral learners in the cross-hairs of redemptive history at the beginning of the 21st century. What are you, your church and your mission agencies doing to hit the bullseye?
If the term “oral learner” is unfamiliar to you let me offer a simple definition. By oral learners we mean those people who learn best and whose lives are most likely to be transformed when information comes to them through oral, not literate, means. Oral learners transmit their beliefs, heritage, values by means of stories, drama, songs, and proverbs.. They have built their customs, culture, and social fabric around storytelling.
What does this mean for us as we endeavor to fulfill the Great Commission?
We must start asking questions like these. How in the world do we share the Word of God with people who can’t. don’t or read? Who don’t write? Who may not even have a written language? HOW?
Listen to this story from a young Christian leader in Bihar, India. His name is Bihari Mukhiya.
I come from village culture. I want to tell you what it is like there. Most of the people in the villages are non-literate they have never been to school they have never read any books. Village people take interest in stories in music and in drama. In the village in the evening time people meet in the street, tell stories and sing village songs. They learn lessons from these stories and they put them into practice in their lives. They never read a book; they never have been to school. They are not literate, but they listen and then they learn.
I come from a Hindu family. In my childhood I used to join in Hindu customs. I listened to many Hindu stories. But when I reached sixth standard in the school I had a chance to hear the stories of Jesus. I had never heard such stories. I had been taught that there were many gods. But through the stories of Jesus I came to understand that Jesus is the true God. I committed my life to the Lord and began to tell people about Jesus.
After some time I went to Bible college to learn the word of God. There I was taught a literate western style of education. When I came back from the college I used the same western methods to preach the gospel but nobody accepted Christ. I was very discouraged and I was thinking I would leave the ministry. Then, I got the opportunity to learn how to communicate with oral cultures through training provided by Scriptures In Use. I learned how to share my faith and plant churches among non-literate people. I was influenced by the teaching and returned to the mission field and started using the same storying method. So many people believed in Jesus Christ through this method.
I witnessed so many souls coming to Christ by telling stories from the Bible. So many souls are being saved. I am now training many missions workers throughout Bihar. The training is going well, every month many people are accepting Jesus Christ. Each month 500 to 600 people are taking baptism and 50 new churches are being planted every month. Through the cooperation of several ministries, a church planting movement is taking place throughout Bihar.
Brace yourself for this headline: An estimated 90% of the world’s Christian workers present the gospel and do discipleship using highly literate communication styles. 90%. Throw that up against the 67% who are oral learners and what do you have? A strategic problem.
Let me put it this way. We can try all day long to install software on a Macintosh computer but if the software is Windows only PC, we’re out-a-luck. We can know that our customers need software. We can spend big bucks on designing great software. Our investors may be excited about the software. But it all means nothing if when we go to install it on our customers computer. We find out that two-thirds of them are using an incompatible operating system!
Oral learners do not have a literate operating system. They need different software. That’s what this young leader in India discovered. That one single insight should rock our world as it did his. It should stun Christian leadership. It should change our mission strategies for sharing faith, training leaders, and planting churches. It should radically change the focus of our Christian stewardship.
How do we fulfill the Great Commission among oral learners? We change our approach as Bihari Mukhiya did. He simply learned to use the stories of the Bible to communicate in a way that functionally illiterate people relate to and understand. That’s it. So obvious. So brutally simple.
He put away his printed books and tracts. He stopped communicating abstact theological ideas that he’d learned in Bible school. He started telling the stories of the Bible. Straight forward. He used these oral stories to cross natural bridges into the lives of his listeners. He used stories from the Bible to bring forth truths that challenge the worldview of the people in his culture. Then he watched the Holy Spirit speak through these stories. You can’t argue with the results.
The fact that we, as literate, print oriented, missionaries from the west, have missed this oral storying method for so long may be one of the single most serious tactical mistakes we have made in the last 200 years! I grieve over all the time, energy and funding that I have personally directed toward print evangelism mission endeavors that missed the mark for oral learners.
I finally got the picture. Literacy software does not fit two-thirds of the world’s population. Until we wake up to that fact, we will continue to expend manpower and resources in less fruitful endeavors, with inadequate tools, and methodology. The result? We miss our audience. We missing our opportunity to effectively share the stories of faith among oral cultures.
The development of oral strategies is not meant to detract from print evangelism or Bible translation. In fact, the opposite is true. The most comprehensive strategy for communicating the word of God in the heart language of an oral culture should start with an oral approach that leads to translation and literacy. The problem is, too often we get the cart before the horse. Or worse yet, we forget the horse completely. Without the horse. That cart isn’t going anywhere.
I’m convinced that if we take the unique needs of the oral learner to heart and if we make them a leading priority in shaping our all mission strategies we will make monumental progress in completing the Great Commission.
We urgently need ministries willing to rethink what they are doing. Ministries willing to create new tools, new methodologies, new approaches that put the needs of oral learners first.
In doing so God will enable us to harness the greatest force on earth for spreading the gospel and multiplying the church—the power of His stories reproduced by word of mouth over and over again among each unique oral culture of the world in culturally sensitive ways.
We need a movement of cross cultural Bible story experts who have the skill to train people to engage unreached oral learners with a complete set of Bible stories in the local language that are tailored to transform their unique worldview. It’s cost effective, reproducible and grass roots accessible.
It is the goal of the International Orality Network to influence the Body of Christ to disciple all oral learners. We envision nothing less than a worldview specific, word-of-mouth-Bible storying revolution in the mother tongue of each oral culture of the world.
This is our greatest hope for fulfilling the great commission among 4 billion people who have yet to hear the Story. It’s a simple insight with world shaking possibilities.
What do you think, Mr. Guttenberg?
Making Disciples of Oral Learners
Avery Willis
Two thirds of all people in the world are oral communicators-- who can’t, don’t, or won’t learn through literate means.
Four billion people in our world are at risk of a Christless eternity unless literate Christians make significant changes in evangelism, discipleship, leader training, and church planting. These four billion people in our world need a customized strategy delivered in a culturally appropriate manner in order for them to hear, understand, respond to the gospel, and reproduce disciples.
However, an estimated 90% of the world’s Christian workers are using literate communication styles that don’t communicate to oral learners. Literate approaches rely on lists, outlines, word studies, apologetics, and theological jargon. Making disciples of oral learners means using communication forms that are familiar within the cultures: stories, proverbs, drama, songs, chants, and poetry. Our issues group discovered that many churches and workers in relational cultures, have found significant benefits to the chronological Bible storying approach in evangelism, discipleship, church planting, and leader training.
During the Lausanne conference 2004 in Pattaya, Thailand we formed a Lausanne Task Force on Making Disciples of Oral Learners to explore and implement all practical means to advance the cause of making disciples of oral learners worldwide. The task force began the International Orality Network in Feb. 2005.
We challenge churches and other Christian organizations to join us and ride the next wave of Kingdom advancement by developing and implementing methods for effective oral strategies. Partners, networks, seminaries, mission agencies, conference and workshop leaders, and other Christian influencers are called upon to recognize the issues of orality in the world around them, become intentional about making disciples of oral learners, raise awareness, initiate oral communication projects, and train missionaries and local leaders in chronological Bible storying as an effective church-planting strategy.
Avery Willis, issues group convener and Executive Director of the International Orality Network said, “The Lausanne Conference catapulted the Making Disciples of Oral Learners issue to the forefront of the missions world. With the insights we are gleaning from research and collaboration, our prayer is that it will become as significant as Ralph Winter’s call to reach the “hidden peoples” of the world at Lausanne 1974. Christians have the opportunity to evangelize, disciple, plant churches and train leaders in these unreached people groups of the world in our generation, but only if we use appropriate communication styles with oral learners. The church today must embrace oral communicators as partners--together making disciples of all peoples to the glory of God!”
Article was originally written for the Lausanne Task Force, Pattaya, Thailand in 2004.
Orality
What is Orality?
Two thirds of the world (that's 4.35 billion people) and 70% of the unreached people of the world do not understand the message when it is delivered by literate means. They don’t understand the concepts even when they hear them.
The writers of the Bible and Jesus used oral means before the message was written down. Jesus did not speak without using parables because only 5-10% of the people were literate in his day. Oral learners learn and remember through stories, proverbs, drama, song and chants. They are just as smart as literates but have not learned the skills of literacy. Their memories are better and they can easily reproduce what they hear. They are the key to beginning church planting movements and reaching the lost of the world. Stories from the Bible can be used to make disciples, train leaders and even equip missionaries who do not read.
Orality
by John McGee posted on Thursday, October 28, 2010 at 5:54pm
[A blog about Orality, one of the significant themes and highlights from Cape Town 2010. This particular blog though encompsses my own study of this movement over the past seven years and is a synopsis of my understandings, observations, conclusions and challenges.]
There is a significant movement in missions today focused on oral cultures. Some indications are that nearly 70 percent of the world’s population, either, cannot, prefer not or will not read to engage in learning and exposure to that which they did not previously know.
70 percent, that is a staggering number – more than 4 billion people around the globe. Read this again, we are not talking about cannot only, rather, 70 percent of the world’s population can not, will not or prefers not to learn through literate methods.
What does this tell us about the modern missions movement which historically has had as one of its main pillars to teach people how to read so they can read the Scriptures for themselves. This assumes that the scriptures will be translated and available in a language that can be understood.
Let’s start here. Of the 6,800 languages that are spoken around the world. About 3,100 have a portion of the Scriptures, a translation in progress, or a completed translation. The remaining 3,700 languages, whether spoken by millions or only a few hundred, have no part of the Word of God in that tongue. Only 450 languages have complete translations of the word of God.
"My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. Because prayer is vital to spiritual warfare and because we tend to spend little time in silence in and listening I would suggest the following pattern for prayer. I have developed this over the years and have found it very helpful to me and I hope it is helpful to you as well. I call it WARTIME prayer and I will give a brief summary below. If you spend 5 minutes on each segment you will pray for a half hour, if you spent 10 minutes on each part you will pray for a full hour. When I have used this patters with others they are always blessed and amazed that they prayed so long and found it so meaningful. Try it and let me know if it helps and blesses you.
WA Worship & Adoration
Humbly praising God in reverence and awe focusing on who God is (His character) and what He has done (His works). This could involve singing and telling God that you love Him.
Below are some passages that might help us focus on this aspect:
Mat. 6:9 “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Psa. 95:6,7 “Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker; for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care.
Heb. 12:28, 29 “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our "God is a consuming fire."
Psa. 27:1; 28:8; 29:1,2; 57:10; 96:9,10; 99:5; Eph. 5:19
Nehemiah 9:5b-15, 17b-25; Daniel 9:4
R Repentance & Confession
In God’s presence we see ourselves as we truly are and so affirming our sin and our need of forgiveness. Turning from our sin to God. Moving from self-centeredness to humble submission to God.
Below are some passages that might help us focus on this aspect:
Mat. 6:12 “And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
Psa. 66:8 “If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened;
Psa. 139:23,24 “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
1 Jn. 1:8-10 “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.
Psa. 19:12-14; 25:8,9; 51:10; Isa. 55:6,7; Mk. 11:25; 1 Pet. 1:15,16
Nehemiah 9:16-17a, 26-31; Daniel 9:5-16
T Thanksgiving & Praise
Prepare for intercession by showing our appreciation and gratitude to God through thanking and praising Him. This might involve Scripture Praying and would focus on what God has done and what He has promised to do.
Below are some passages that might help us focus on this aspect:
Mat. 6:9 “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Psa. 100:1-5 “Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.
Phil. 4:6,7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Col. 4:2 “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.
Psa. 30:12; 63:3; 69:30; 75:1; 92:1,2; 150; 2 Cor 9:15; Eph. 5:18-20; 1 Thes 5:17
Nehemiah 9:17b, 19; Daniel 9:9
I Intercession & Supplication
As priests of God to come before the throne of grace and pray for God’s will while doing spiritual warfare in behalf of others and ourselves. This should include: individuals, church ministries & needs, spiritual leaders, missionaries, the lost and backsliders, local, national and international issues and leaders, and the sick.
Below are some passages that might help us focus on this aspect:
Mat. 6:10,11 “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
Eph. 6:10-13, 18 “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. . . And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.
1 Tim 2:1,2 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone -- for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.
Jas. 5:13,16 “Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. . . Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.
Psa 2:8; 63:1; Mat. 7:7; 9:37,38; Eph. 1:17-20; Phil. 1:9-11; Col. 1:9-14; 4:2-4,12; Jas. 1:5; 4:2; 1 Pet. 5:7;1 Jn. 5:14,15
Nehemiah 9:32-37; Daniel 9:17-19
M Meditation & Listening
Seeking do spiritual evaluation (running God’s Word through our lives over and over) to discover how to apply God’s Word to our lives. Spending time in silence listening, letting God speak to us, and gaining God’s perspective discovering what God wants us to do so that He will be glorified.
Below are some passages that might help us focus on this aspect:
Mat. 6:13 “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:
Psa 1:1,2 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.
Psa. 46:10 “"Be still (cease striving), and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."
Jn. 10:3,4,27 “ The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. . . My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
Josh. 1:8; Psa. 25:14; 27:8; 37:7; 62:5; 77:12; 119:15; Isa. 30:15; 40:31
Exodus 24:15; Ezekiel 3:16
E Expectation & Engagement
Expecting, by faith and through having meet with the Lord, God to answer our prayers while using and involving us in the process. This involves maintaining our spiritual alertness, claiming victory through God’s promises and walking by faith and not by sight as we are engaged in the battle.
Below are some passages that might help us focus on this aspect:
Mat. 6:10,13 “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Jer. 33:3 “`Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.'
Mk. 14:38 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."
2 Cor. 10:3-5 “ For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
Isa. 6:1,5-8; Mk. 11:24; 2 Cor. 4:18; Eph 3:16-21; 5:18; 6:18; 2 Thes. 1:11; 2:17; Heb. 13:20,21; 1 Pet. 5:8-9; 1 Jn 5:14-15
Connect the Dots
Connect The Dots
I was very blessed to have an enjoyable drive to work. Most of it was back country road, no interstate highway or four lane road. Not much traffic unless I was running late and encountered school buses. As I was driving to work one morning, I looked to my left and saw two deer grazing in an open field. They heard the car and watched as I drove by. A half mile further, I looked up in time to see a flock of geese flying in formation overhead. The sun was just coming up and the sky was a brilliant shade of red and orange.
I had to just keep thanking God and praising him for the wonders he had placed in my pathway. As I was thanking him, it occurred to me that he orchestrated this beauty just for me. I never saw another car as I drove down the country road and that increased my awe in my creator.
Why would he plan such an event for me? He must really love me and want to bless me. That really got me to wondering how I fit into the scheme of things in the world.
I am a praying person, maybe more than some, but probably not as much as others. I am led by God’s Holy Spirit and when the Spirit asks me to pray for someone, I do.
Each morning I have my devotional time before starting my day. I need that time to get prepared for the day. It seems to help me be ready for any and every situation I may face.
I have been praying around the world with the help of a world prayer map. It directs my prayers to different countries on specific days. This is a tool that I use to pray for those who have never heard the gospel message. It amazes me that someone on the other side of the world may be blessed because I prayed for them.
Back to my story, I’m not sure what I was praying as I drove down the road that morning. I know that I was marveling at God’s work in the heavenlies. The sunrise was breathtaking. God spoke to my heart that morning and assured me that I was part of something much bigger than my own little corner of the earth.
In Psalm 139:7 - 8, David says, “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.”
As Christians, we are never separated from God and his love. His word tells us so. (See Romans 8:35-39.) That being said, we know that we are to pray. We are instructed to pray for other Christians, for our enemies, for those who persecute us. We are told to pray without ceasing and we are told by Jesus to pray: “Our Father, in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” Matthew 6:9-13.
Did you hear what Jesus asked us to pray for? He said “your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Wow, we are asking God to do his will on earth as it is in heaven. That is pretty awesome. I can’t really imagine what God does in heaven, but it is something fantastic. We know that Jesus is preparing a place for us in heaven. We know that the true temple of God is in heaven. We know that there is a throne in heaven.
When we ask for God’s will to be done, we are impacting our planet in a mighty way. When I pray for the gospel message to be preached in other countries, when I ask for God’s purpose and plan to be fulfilled in the leaders of other nations, when I ask that Christians would have the mind of Christ, my prayers are being heard in heaven and affecting the heavenlies.
Remember when God created the heavens and the earth? What did he do to create things? He spoke them into existence. Although I am not God, when I speak the things that his Holy Spirit instructs me to speak, I too am causing things to happen in the spirit realm.
What an awesome responsibility and how powerful are our words. I don’t really know the impact I have on other countries when I pray. I usually ask according to Jesus words in Matthew 9:36-38, “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, (that is you and I) “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” We are asking according to God’s will when we ask him to send workers into the harvest field.
How does my life affect what happens in the universe? I can’t really say, but I do know that God hears my prayers. When someone is sent into the harvest field to become a missionary and preach the good news of salvation, I am there with them in Spirit. The impact they have on others may be a result of my prayers and the prayers of other saints around the world.
When someone hears and accepts the gift of salvation, the angels in heaven rejoice. “I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.” Luke 15:7 Now that is far reaching. A little prayer from me and others like me can open the doors of heaven, send workers into the harvest field, the message of salvation through Christ can be preached and people can have eternal life.
Eternal life, now that is universal. It is so far reaching that we may never know just how far that one little prayer went.
Multiply our prayers by thousands or hundreds of thousands and you may be able to understand how you can affect what happens in the universe.
Now I have never really read anything in the Bible to prove what will happen when we live for eternity, but I have heard it said that what we are experiencing here on earth is like pre-school compared to what we will experience in eternity. And yet, we cannot experience eternal life unless we give our hearts to Jesus here on earth.
Our prayers for the lost people of the world are so important. If they are lost they don’t know to look for Jesus. We have to share the message with them. Not everyone who hears the message will accept it, not everyone who hears the message will understand it, but Jesus died for everyone on earth. That means that everyone on earth should at least have the opportunity to hear what he did for them. God wants to give everyone the chance to accept his gift of eternal life.
Do your prayers make a difference in the universe? Yes they do. Even if you don’t see visible proof, you have to pray and keep on praying. God knows your heart and he knows that you are sincere in wanting to reach the lost.
Father,
We know that no matter where we are, you are there, your Holy Spirit is with us, as Christians, wherever we are. We thank you for the way you reveal yourself to us and we want you to reveal yourself to those who don’t know you.
We know that you are the Lord of the harvest and that you can send workers into the harvest field to share the message of salvation through Jesus Christ.
We know that you have a purpose and a plan for leaders of nations around the world, you are the one who has put them positions of leadership. We pray that your plans for the leaders of the world would be fulfilled and that they would become the men and women you created them to be.
We want to advance the gospel around the world and we pray that those who hear the gospel would accept your gift of eternal life. We know that heaven is poised and waiting to rejoice as people accept your gift and we rejoice with the angels.
Thank you for hearing our prayers offered in Jesus name. Amen
Praying for our Veterans
Veterans have given of themselves to serve our country. Some were physically
hurt during their tour of duty. Some were psychologically hurt in Vietnam by
the actions in our country. There has been some healing here—but scars remain.
Some have what is called Post Traumatic Syndrome. Some of our pastors are
veterans—and that includes some of you, and others reading this are Veterans too.
I too am a Veteran and share this request as a Veteran.
Why don’t we ask God to beclose to all our Veterans and their families and to
Bless them with a knowledge of His Word. That the Lord may be especially
close to those who have survived battle and give them an understanding of His
protection to them during the battles. Also, thank God for their service to this Nation.
In Jesus’ Holy Name,AMEN!!!
May we through God’s help show the Love of Christ to all of ourveterans – a love that lifts up Christ. Christ said that if He be lifted up He would draw all men to Himself!! John 12: 32 It was love that made Jesus go to
the Cross and on the Cross was He was literally lifted up. When we show the
Love of Christ to them -- What a way to reach them for Christ
If you have additional thoughts on praying for our Veterans, please share them, and in your groups on Pray!Network!
Blessings
Voices Together: Psalm 36:5-9
Psalm 36:5-9
Your steadfast love, O LORD, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. Your righteousness is like the mountains of God; your judgments are like the great deep; man and beast you save, O LORD. How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light.
This morning, this beautiful morning as I sat in my chair, reading, studying, meditating and praying Your word, the day was dawning. Your sun was rising and revealing all the beauty of Your creation before me as its light lifted the darkness. Mountains, fields, trees, colors, shadows, stone walls, fences, barns, flower beds, all shouting the glories of the creation with their own voices. Praising Your goodness. I am awestruck by the display and filled with joy.
Voices Together: Psalm 36:1-4
Psalm 36:1-4
To the choirmaster. Of David, the servant of the LORD. Transgression speaks to the wicked deep in his heart; there is no fear of God before his eyes. For he flatters himself in his own eyes that his iniquity cannot be found out and hated. The words of his mouth are trouble and deceit; he has ceased to act wisely and do good. He plots trouble while on his bed; he sets himself in a way that is not good; he does not reject evil.
Lord, the ability of the unrepentant heart to justify and excuse behavior is an ability without superior. I know, deep in my heart that a course of behavior is wrong, but I can explain and justify why it is appropriate at this time and in these circumstances. I can conveniently forget that You hate evil and abhor sin. I am a master of self-justification and delusion.
