The Warrior's Prayer

The Warrior's Prayer

Heavenly Father your Warrior prepares for battle Today I claim Victory over satan by putting on the whole Armor of God. I put on the Girdle of Truth! May I stand firm in the Truth of your Word so I will not be a victim of satan's lies, I put on the Breastplate of Righteousness! May it Guard my heart from evil so it will remain pure and Holy protected under the blood of Jesus Christ. I put on the Shoes of Peace! May I Stand Firm in the Good News of the Gospel so your Peace will shine through me and be a light to all I encounter. I take the Shield of Faith! May I be ready for satan's fiery doubt, denial and deceit so I will not be vulnerable to spiritual defeat. I put on the Helmet of Salvation. May I keep my mind focused on you so satan will not have a stronghold on my thoughts. I take the Sword of the Spirit. May the two edged sword of your Word be ready in my hands so I can expose the tempting words of satan.
By Faith your Warrior has put on the whole Amor of God! I am prepared to live this day in Spiritual Victory. Amen

What prayer is becoming to me.

God has been speaking intently to me about prayer for the last several months: about six to be exact. Ever since I picked up a book by Evelyn Christensen entitled “What Happens When Women Pray”. That book grabbed me by the heart and has not let me go. The Holy Spirit used the those words that He gave to Evelyn, to influence an entirely different way to pray in my life; And, I believe, a more powerful way to pray.

James 5:16 says, “ Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. “

This is what kind of pray-er I want to be; powerful and effective. I have learned that if this is the kind of pray-er I want to be then there are some things about my prayer life I am going to have to change, and my life in general. I have to remember, for one, just who I am talking to. This is the Almighty God of the Universe, the one who created it all. And he is also my Heavenly Father, the one who cradles my heart and soul in His loving arms.

Prayer is also more than just rattling off a list of “I want”, “I needs”, “She/He wants”, “She/He needs.” This is about relationship, believe it or not. My relationship, first, with my LORD and then with my neighbor. Before I can pray for my sisters and brothers powerfully and effectively, I have to have my relationship with my Father in good working order.

Prayer is one of the most important and life changing experiences with God that a christian can have. It is through the power of the Holy Spirit within us that prayer brings change in our hearts. You have heard it said that sometimes prayer doesn’t change the situation as much as it changes the person in the situation. That is very true.

I want to be a 24/7 pray-er as well. You think that is unrealistic? I did too. Until I heard it explained as not so much constantly being in a talking or word uttering state to God as much as being available for conversation with Him at anytime, at the drop of a hat. Praying as we walk, as we drive, when we have a few spare minutes during a break at work, the opportunities are there if we would just take the time to see them. I find the more time I spend in conversation with Him, the more opportunities to do so appear, until it is happening without my even thinking about it. I just start talking with Him.

Praying with others is another facet of effectively and powerfully praying. Jesus said,
“For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them." Matt 8:20.
When two or more get together in the name of Jesus, He is there too. Here, among us, right beside us, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. How awesome is that? The Almighty God of the universe who created all things and has all things in His power comes to be with little old unimportant us! I never before realized the power of that. In the name of Jesus, through the presence of the Holy Spirit, our God is with us.

1 John 5:14-15
“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.”

This verse is awesome. And whatever we ask according to the will of the Father, we will have. If we pray according to His will, we will be denied nothing! But did you catch the condition? ACCORDING TO HIS WILL. How do you pray according to His will? Well, first you have to get to KNOW Him. NOT “know about Him” or just who He is or just what He has done but KNOW Him. Just like you “know” your kids, or your spouse, or your parents, or your best friend. You “know” them so well that you know what they think about certain things, how they will react to certain things. You can almost speak for them in the confidence that you know their thoughts. That’s how you have to get to “know” God and then you will always pray according to His will. You will know if what you are praying for or about is in His will.
Romans 12:2
“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Each new day brings new insight. Not only am I talking to God but He is talking to me.
Psalm 46:10
He says, “Be still, and know that I am God”
We have to remember to be still and let Him talk too. He has a wealth of information to share with you. Treasures you cannot imagine. Truths that are hidden to you now but He will reveal to your heart and mind. Be still and know that He is God. He was then, He is now, and He will always be. Get to know Him and discover and whole new way to pray.

Appoint A New Prayer Leader

Body Building Column ~ Appoint A New Prayer Leader

Filed under: Body Building Columns,Everything in our Archives! — Phil Miglioratti
By Phil Miglioratti
Whenever I teach or consult with church leaders who want to reinvigorate their corporate prayer life, I expect to be met with puzzled looks. That’s because I immediately suggest that they appoint a new prayer leader.

Am I proposing wholesale change in every prayer ministry? Do I expect even small congregations to find a more highly skilled leader? Do I dare make such a suggestion when I haven’t even met the current prayer leader?

Yes, yes, and yes. And I even know the name of the perfect person for the job: the Holy Spirit!

Most believers agree to the need for Spirit-led prayer. We believe the “Spirit himself intercedes for us” (Ro. 8:26) and desire to build ourselves up in our most holy faith as we pray in the Holy Spirit (Jude 20). The reason our corporate praying isn’t what it could be isn’t doctrinal but psychological and sociological.

It is psychological because our culture values assertive leaders. We eagerly follow people who take charge in the decision-making process because dependency and humble uncertainty are not viewed as positive leadership traits.

We also have a sociological blind spot because our culture readily delegates authority to people who give the impression that they know exactly what to do and precisely when to do it. Generally, if someone can make a group feel confident, that person becomes its leader.

Based on these mindsets, many churches typically select leaders for prayer ministries based on a person’s popularity, faithfulness, recognized ability to pray, and spiritual maturity. While these qualities may be good to have, they don’t necessarily indicate a person has the ability to hear the Holy Spirit, which is the main requirement to shepherd, facilitate, and lead a group in prayer.

So how do we begin the process of appointing our new prayer leader?

Demotion

The first step is the most difficult. Whoever currently leads prayer meetings, pastors or lay leaders, should intentionally surrender to the Spirit their authority to make decisions and set goals. These people don’t have to step down altogether, but they do need to realize that they are merely assistants. From now on, the Holy Spirit is in charge. When planning ministry activities or facilitating corporate prayer, prayer leaders will start to lead according to Acts 15:28: “It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us.”

In reality, this demotion is actually a promotion, since the values of God’s kingdom are upside down, from a human perspective. We no longer just invite the Spirit into our prayer ministry or meeting to assist us; we now accept His invitation into the heavenly prayer meeting of Jesus interceding to the Father (Eph. 2:6; Heb. 7:25).

Declaration

The pray-ers (and the entire congregation) need to know of their leaders’ change of status and their commitment to seek the Spirit before, during, and after times of prayer. You can communicate this new direction in a variety of ways.

For example, in a sermon the pastor can say something to the effect, “As we move forward in our mission, the leadership is committed to hearing the voice of God before we make any decisions or set goals.”

You could write on a prayer list, “Ask God’s Spirit to tell you how to pray for each name and need.” Or if you are teaching a class, take a moment to explain, “When you pray, begin by declaring your dependence upon the Holy Spirit for the wisdom and the words of how to proceed.”

Demonstration

Transitioning to Spirit-led praying is a process that may take some time. Here are a few simple steps you can take in leading groups into a more Spirit-led way of praying:

• Begin prayer times by inviting the Spirit of God to fill, inspire, and reveal God’s will from His Word.

• Explain why you are directing in a specific way or are making a change, such as moving from praise to petition. Express your sense of the Spirit’s leading, perhaps by saying, “Let’s go back to praying for our youth. We’ve moved too soon to other topics.”

• After a prayer session, ask for feedback on what people experienced as the group prayed together. A debrief segment allows the Holy Spirit to emphasize what He revealed or released during prayer and to affirm next steps and goals.

By becoming the Holy Spirit’s assistant, the human prayer leader’s focus shifts from the printed prayer list to the issues written on God’s heart. The group is able to pray with the mind of Christ because it is filled and led by the Spirit in an exciting adventure everyone can look forward to week after week.

Ask the Holy Spirit to be your new prayer leader, and start the journey!

Top-priority for Grandmothers in Oregon

I would like to share with you about the Grandparents @ Prayer (G@P) intercessory prayer group in Beaverton, Oregon in which I participate. We meet the second Tuesday afternoon for about 90 minutes each month in a nearby church.

When we started, there were several women but then several dropped out and only two of us met for probably a year. Then finally, several others joined us and now we have four to six grandmothers attending regularly from various churches. We have bonded into a close relationship since we have a common purpose of intentionally praying for our grandchildren to experience the reality of God’s love and to live the adventure of following Jesus Christ.

We start by sharing our answers to prayer, which is always a joyous time to hear how God is working in the lives of our families. Then we have a brief devotional to guide our prayer time after which we spend time uniting in prayer. I didn’t know any of these grandmothers before we started and I feel like God has given me some wonderful prayer partners and friends.

It is a place where grandmothers can feel comfortable sharing the challenging issues their families are facing. Some of their grandchildren have been involved in some very difficult circumstances.

However, we have had some amazing answers to prayer, which has increased our faith and confidence in praying for our families. We prayed for jobs for family members and employment opportunities came. We prayed for wisdom and grace for family relationships and the Lord answered our prayers.

I would like to share comments from two grandmothers.

Mardie shares

Our G@P group is a wonderful support for me. It has been so nice to get to know other praying grandparents and to hear and share our stories and to know we are not alone. What a precious gift it is to pray for each other, to know they are lifting my grandchildren up in prayer and share in each other's victories and answers to prayer.

Linda shares:

My G@P group is such a top priority for me that I don’t want to miss a single meeting. It has been a tremendous encouragement and a source of comfort and strength to share my burdens for my grandchildren and to have others lift the needs of my family in prayer. My daughters have expressed their gratitude to know that others are praying for her children.

I thank the Lord for this G@P ministry, which is making a difference in so many lives. You too, can be a part of a G@P group standing in the GAP with prayer for your grandchildren and their parents by going to http://www.grandparentingwithapurpose.com/gap/

Remember your love

 by Jim Reimann

We will remember your love more than wine.

Song of Songs 1:4 NKJV

From the pen of Charles Spurgeon:

Jesus will not allow His people to forget His love, for if they come to the point of nearly forgetting, He will revisit them with fresh love. He says, in essence, "If you forget my cross, I will cause you to remember it, for at My table--the Lord's table--I will reveal Myself anew to you. If you forget what I did for you before God's eternal court, I will remind you, for you will need an advocate and will always find Me ready when you call." Nor does a mother allow her child to forget her, for if her child has traveled to a distant country without writing home, she will write, asking, "Have you forgotten your mother?" Soon thereafter she will receive a letter, proving the gentle reminder was not in vain. It is much the same with Jesus, who says to us, "Remember me."

In the words of our text, our response to Him will be:

"We will remember your love." Then we will go on to say, "'We will remember your love' and its matchless history. It is as ancient as 'the glory [You] had with [Your Father] before the world began' (John 17:5). O Jesus, 'we will remember your [eternal] love' when You pledged Yourself to us as Your bride. 'We will remember your love' which suggested the sacrifice of Yourself; the love which pondered that sacrifice through the ages, and the love which longed for the time when the words 'I have come' that were 'written about [You] in the scroll' (Ps. 40:7) would find their fulfillment. 'We will remember your love,' O Jesus, as it was revealed to us by Your holy life, from the manger in Bethlehem to the Garden of Gethsemane. As we examine Your life from cradle to grave, we rejoice in Your love, for Your every word and deed was love. Thus, we rejoice in Your love--love that death did not exhaust; love that blazed so brilliantly in Your resurrection. 'We will remember [that burning fire of] your love' which will never allow You to rest until Your chosen ones are all safely home, until Zion is glorified, and until Jerusalem is established on her everlasting foundations of light and love in heaven."

From the pen of Jim Reimann:

Because "God is love" (1 John 4:8), defining and personifying it Himself, it is impossible to find a greater love than His. Jesus said, "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13), then, as the most precious example possible, laid down His life for His chosen ones. To remind us of His willingness to do so, and that His sacrifice was an act of His love, He said, "No one takes [My life] from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again" (John 10:18).

As Paul considered the great love of our Lord, which he described as being beyond our capacity to fully understand, his heart began to praise the Savior. The following is how he described it. May it be the desire of our hearts today.

"I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge.... To him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen"(Eph. 3:17-19, 21).

A Four-Fold Benedictine Blessing

Though not personally Benedictine, this prayer (which was originally written by Sr. Ruth Fox, OSB, in 1985) caught my attention as I was thinking through how to pray and what specifically to pray for during 2013. I pray that you will also find it useful. It is reprinted with attribution below:

A Four-Fold Benedictine Blessing

By Sr. Ruth Fox, OSB (1985)

May God bless you with a restless discomfort about easy answers, half-truths and superficial relationships,

so that you may seek truth boldly and love deep within your heart.

May God bless you with holy anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people

so that you may tirelessly work for justice, freedom, and peace among all people.

May God bless you with the gift of tears to shed with those who suffer from

pain, rejection, starvation, or the loss of all that they cherish,

so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and transform their pain into joy.

May God bless you with enough foolishness to believe that you really CAN make a difference in this world,

so that you are able, with God’s grace,to do what others claim cannot be done.

And the blessing of God the Supreme Majesty and Creator,

Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Word, who is our brother and Savior,

and the Holy Spirit, who is our Advocate and our Guide,

be with you and remain with you, this day and forevermore.

SUDAN: RACIAL-RELIGIOUS GENOCIDE IN THE 'NEW SOUTH'
'Worse than Darfur' - but who cares?

by Elizabeth Kendal

In 1992, during its war against South Sudan, Khartoum declared a jihad against the 'rebellious' Nuba: the African tribes of the north's Nuba Mountains who along with the southerners were resisting Islamisation and racist Arab supremacy. A government-sponsored fatwa legitimised the jihad by labelling Muslim 'rebels' as 'apostates' and Christians as 'kaffirs [infidels / unbelievers] standing as a bulwark against the spread of Islam', and affirming that 'Islam has granted the freedom of killing both categories'. Nothing has changed - same genocidal regime, same racial and religious hatred, same jihad, same aim: genocide.

Reporting on the situation across Sudan's 'new south' - Abyei, South Kordofan and Blue Nile - Dr Mukesh Kapila, the former UN Humanitarian Co-ordinator in Sudan (2003-04) laments: 'The ethnic cleansing is largely complete. . . . Rebel areas are depopulated and largely empty.' He says that in Blue Nile, some 450,000 people have been affected with fields and villages being razed as Sudanese radio calls for the region to be 'combed' and cleansed of Africans who are de-humanised as 'black plastic bags'. He reports that in South Kordofan - where soldiers have been ordered to 'sweep out the trash' (i.e. the Africans) and 'eat them alive' - displaced families have retreated to remote cave networks where food is scarce. Whilst many are determined to remain, saying 'This is our country', others are simply too weak to attempt the long trek south. It is a journey that is itself incredibly dangerous, for Khartoum wants the Nuba not just gone, but dead - unable to return. A delegation from HART (Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust) recently confirmed that on 12 December 2012 1700 civilians from Ulu Payam (Kirmuk County) left for South Sudan, only to be attacked en route by SAF (Sudan Armed Forces) ground troops. Many were killed and many children scattered, with only 700 of the original 1700 arriving in Maban, South Sudan.

Dr Kapila adds: 'What I've seen in the Nuba Mountains and Blue Nile is all that I've seen in Darfur, plus the addition of modern technology. Ten years after, we have precision guided missiles, land mines which I don't remember seeing in Darfur, anti-personnel bombs, cluster bombs which I did not see in Darfur, we see MiG fighters which I don't remember seeing in Darfur, and we have a much more precision-guided approach with distance over the horizon artillery. So this is not just another Darfur; quite possibly, it is worse than Darfur.'

Human Rights Watch estimates that a total of 900,000 African (non-Arab) Sudanese are now affected. Having razed the farms and villages, the regime maintains a blockade on humanitarian aid, using starvation as a weapon of mass destruction. This has long been the regime's preferred method of mass killing: engineering a famine and just waiting as the population turns skeletal and quietly drops into the dust. Khartoum has a long history of this type of warfare - indeed President Omar el-Bashir has perfected mass murder and his conscience is untroubled. Despite this, the US administration has assured Khartoum that it is not seeking regime change but rather normalising relations. This is because the US believes friendship with Khartoum is in its geo-strategic interests on the spurious grounds that it thinks Khartoum could be helpful in the fight against terrorism. In truth, the West's interests would be better served if it feared the LORD!

Bishop Andudu Adam Elnail of the Anglican Cathedral in Kadugli only survived the ethnic-cleansing of Kadugli (the capital of South Kordofan) because he was receiving medical treatment in the US when Kadugli was invaded and ethnically cleansed in June 2011. This week Bishop Andudu and Dr Kapila will attend the African Union (AU) Summit in Addis Ababa to lobby for action to end the suffering in Sudan's 'new south'. They have identified Friday 25 January 2013 'Heads of State meeting on Sudan' as a key test of the AU's 'credibility'. Bishop Andudu is praying the AU will soon take action and send humanitarian aid, implement a ceasefire and send a delegation to the conflict areas. 'That [would] be very helpful,' he said.

HISTORICAL NOTE: In 1913 the newly formed Sudan United Mission (SUM) Australia-New Zealand began sending pioneer missionaries into the Nuba Mountains. The first 'Sudanese Church of Christ in the Nuba Mountains' was planted in 1914. By 1936 there were 33 Australian and New Zealand SUM missionaries working in the Nuba Mountains alongside others who had arrived from various missions (in particular Church Missionary Society) and from the USA. After Sudan became independent in 1956 under a repressive Muslim, Arabist government, the missionaries, sensing their time was limited, redoubled their efforts in Bible translation. By the time the missionaries were forced to leave in 1962, Australian SUM (now Pioneers) missionaries had translated the New Testament into five Nuba languages. Today the Nuba are predominantly Christian. Germany, the USA, New Zealand and particularly Australia, all have strong spiritual ties (does that imply responsibilities?) to the people of the Nuba Mountains. May this centenary year be the year the battle is turned back. Remember - our struggle is not primarily against flesh and blood. (Ephesians 6:12)

PLEASE PRAY SPECIFICALLY THAT THE LORD OF HOSTS WILL -

* intervene in Sudan, so that 'the wicked will be caught in the schemes that they have devised' (Psalm 10:2b ESV).

* 'Break the arm [the machinery of action] of the wicked and evildoer; call his wickedness to account till you find none' (v15); may the machinery of evil - the government in Khartoum, the Sudan Armed Forces, the military hardware - be disrupted so that forces of liberty, justice and equality might be able to rise against it.

* show Omar el-Bashir and all who wield power in Khartoum (vv3-13) that YAHWEH reigns and is King forever (v16).

* see the suffering of the victims (Ps 10:14), hear their cry (v17a), strengthen their hearts (v17b) and provide them with justice (v18a) 'so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more' (v18b).

SUMMARY TO USE IN BULLETINS UNABLE TO RUN THE WHOLE ARTICLE

RACIAL-RELIGIOUS GENOCIDE IN SUDAN'S 'NEW SOUTH'

According to Dr Mukesh Kapila, the former UN Humanitarian Co-ordinator in Sudan (2003-04), the ethnic cleansing of Sudan's 'new south' - Abyei, South Kordofan and Blue Nile - 'is largely complete'. He comments that due to advances in technology, this war is 'worse than Darfur'. Displaced Africans (non-Arabs) unable to reach the massively over-populated refugee camps in South Sudan have retreated to remote caves. Having destroyed their food supply, the Arab-Islamist regime is blockading all humanitarian aid and using starvation as a weapon of mass destruction. These Africans are predominantly Christian. Christianity in the Nuba Mountains dates back nearly a century to when pioneer missionaries from Sudan United Mission Australia-New Zealand planted the first church there in 1914. Please pray for the Lord to intervene in Sudan.

Pray for Increase!

God woke me up early this morning with a very challenging, yet encouraging, message on my heart: “I’m looking for a return on My investment.”

If you’ve spent any time in the business world, you are familiar with this principle. Those who invest money in a business venture don’t do so just for altruistic reasons—they expect their investment to grow and give them a return. This “Return On Investment” is commonly abbreviated ROI.

God loves us. He wants to meet our needs. He’s a generous Heavenly Father who loves to bless His children. But make no mistake about it: God is an investor.

Take another look at the Parable of the Talents in Matthew 25:14-30. The master was a businessman. He distributed his resources to his three servants in differing amounts, but he expected each of them to gain a ROI.

You see, the master was an investor, and he expected his servants to understand that fact. He wanted them to be investors too, gaining an increase on what they had been given.

Let’s understand this clearly: The master didn’t want his servants merely to be CONSUMERS or HOARDERS. He expected them to be profitable INVESTORS.

Two of the three servants in this story got it right. “The servant who received the five bags of silver began to invest the money and earned five more” (v. 16 NLT). According to The Message, this servant “doubled his master’s investment.” This was an impressive 100% ROI.

Sadly, the third servant was a hoarder. He wanted to play it safe, so he merely buried his allotted resources in the ground. When the master returned, this man proudly told him, “I found a good hiding place and secured your money. Here it is, safe and sound down to the last cent” (v. 25 MSG). At least this servant hadn’t consumed everything he had been given, as some of us might have done.

But instead of being impressed, “The master was furious” (v. 26). He had expected the servant to exercise some faith, take some initiative, and gain a ROI.

I saw this principle at work when I inherited some money several years ago. Wary of the fluctuations of the stock market, my first thought was to just put the money in a savings account at the bank, where my inheritance would be safe. But my banker called me one day and confronted me on this. He pointed out that the rate of inflation was higher than the interest rate on my savings account. So my “play it safe” strategy was actually losing money every month.

God has made a huge investment in His people. He gave us His Son and, with Him, everything else we could ever need (Romans 8:32). He promises to bless us, but in turn He expects us to BE a blessing, so that His name and fame are spread throughout the earth (Genesis 12:1-3).

Perhaps you don’t have a lot of money today, but that is not the point. The third servant may have tried to excuse his hoarding by the fact that he didn’t have as much to start with as the others.

The question isn’t what you don’t have, but rather this: What are you doing with the money, time, talents, relationships, and resources you do have? As God is challenging me, let me ask you today: What has the Lord put in your hands? Whatever it may be, He wants you to use it to bless others, thereby gaining a return on His investment.

What ideas has He given you that you’ve never yet acted upon? What teachings from His Word have remained dormant in your heart, never yet implemented? What God-given dreams have you merely buried in the ground?

It's time to ask God to give us His strategies for increase--and then obey what He tells us!

Last March, I went on a prayer journey to my parents home county, and prayed over areas where my family had connection.  It was both a prayer of repentance and also about good things that I knew.  When you confess sin, prayer is not easy.--Important point.  One place I prayed, had been the house of a Lady of Prayer, which was on the property of a former school that my Great great Grandfather had written the charter to.  Prayer at that place was the easiest.

Now what is interesting, is that about 6 months later I was challenged to share about my family homestead--As I did, the Lord helped me find material--old letters, diaries, and such like.  These showed many good things.  Now as I am putting together a document in response to that challenge, I find myself honoring past parents (Grandparents).  Before that prayer time in March, what I knew was just facts, and lots of unconnected information.  Now after that prayer time--of removing sin--clarity and new information became available allowing me to honor my past parents--and God says in the Ten Commandments to honor them.

The Lord recently showed me what was happening in my situation.  He was giving clarity that helped me honor my past Grandparents by showing their love for the family and their commitment to Him.  In my case the change was not immediate--but it came as I kept my focus on Jesus. It makes me wonder what would happen if starting with individuals, we encouraged people to pray over their families and regions where they live.

Removing sin clears our sight--and allows us to grow closer to the Lord!!!  I found this happening to me. This is an interesting thought to pray about and consider.

I would like to hear if others have had similar experiences of clarity coming after praying over past issues in their families.

God Uses People to Bridge the Gap

The Bible describes prayer as “Standing in the Gap” or “Bridgingthe Gap” the channel through which God’s will is brought to earth. We are going to look in God’s Word to see some examples of people He used to stand in the gap so his purpose could be accomplished.

God chose or appointed Moses to stand in the gap between His people, the Israelites and Pharaoh. Esther stood in the gap for her people, the Israelites with prayer and fasting when Haman wanted to destroy the Jews.

There was no gap between God and the earth after God created the earth. However, after Adam and Eve sinned by eating the forbidden fruit in the garden, sin created a gap between God and his plan for the earth. ¹  9651008691?profile=original

Fortunately, God stood in the gap for us by sending His Son, Jesus to the earth to live as a man, die for our sins, and arise from the dead so we could have a personal relationship with Him. He chose us, to be a channel for His power to bridge the gap between himself and the earth.

God chose us to partner with Him and intercede in behalf of our children, grandchildren, and future generations. Just as Jesus, Moses, Esther, Daniel, Joseph, and many others in the Bible stood in the gap for God’s people, we as grandparents have the privilege to stand in the gap with prayer for our families.

Satan is very active in the world today; he knows his time is short. Paul writes in Ephesians 6:10, “We are to be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.” against Satan’s well- thought-out plans and agenda. His goal is to distract and steal our children, grandchildren, and future generations from faith in Jesus Christ. Our goal ought to be that our grandchildren would know the adventure of a full, purposeful, and fruitful life in Jesus Christ.

It is not only important to pray for our families individually, it is vital that we unite with other grandparents to pray for our families in these crucial times. As Prayer Coordinator for Christian Grandparenting Network (CGN), I would like to encourage you to stand in the gap for your grandchildren by participating in a Grandparents @ Prayer (G@P) intercessory prayer group.

We currently have about 22 G@P groups uniting in prayer. Go to http://www.christiangrandparenting.net/prayer/grandparents-prayer/introduction-to-g-p  check out the locations of current groups, testimonials, and additional information. We would love to have you to be a part of the G@P prayer ministry.

I would like to share one of my favorite songs May all who come behind us find us faithful which is my desire for my grandchildren and future generations. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zi-Mn5tRHvM

Are You In Search Of Your Future?

Picture

I’m writing this at the beginning of a new year; a year in which many of us seem to be in transition. Some of us sense that a door is opening; some feel as if one has been slammed shut; and others are looking for the door—looking for direction. Perhaps that’s you, or someone you love. We’ve been inundated with emails and calls from those who are looking for the door to their future. With that in mind, here are a few thoughts.

We are here to find the doors; not here to map our future. We are here to walk through the correct door when it
appears, and to experience the future God has designed for us.

I agree with Yankee baseball great, Yogi Berra, who said:  “The future sure ain’t what it used to be.” Well, hang
around. We, my friend, are about to have a head-on collision with our future. It’s coming at us at a rate of 60 M.P.H. (60 Minutes Per Hour)! Tomorrow morning will arrive whether we set our alarms or not.

Let’s get ready then, and prepare ourselves to experience our future.
It will contain blessings and challenges; joy and sadness; questions and answers. As our future becomes our past, we’ll discover that even the challenges served purposes and contained hidden blessings for us. There really are silver linings in the storm clouds we face.

Picture

It's BACKWARD! Have you noticed that the American flag shoulder patch of the Army uniform is backward? Look closely. The blue section with the stars, which is normally in the upper left corner, is in the upper right corner. The red and white stripes are on the left, not the right side. What is that?

For a moment, imagine a person running while carrying an American flag on a pole. It would be blowing back behind them, right? The patterns would appear backward as they do on that shoulder patch. The message of the patch is: We do not run from the battle. We run to the battle! We need not fear the future because of our faith in Christ. Others may reluctantly, some even fearfully dread their future; not us. Like trusting children jumping into their fathers’ arms, we can run joyfully and boldly into our future—regardless of what we can or cannot see. We know that His plans for us are good.

We should however prepare for the future. Here’s what I suggest.

DREAM BIG! It’s alright to dream. In fact, God sometimes gives us glimpses into our future, as he did with Joseph in the Bible. The dream that’s in your heart may very well have been placed there by Him.

BE BOLD. Dream big; then hold your dreams loosely and...

EXPECT CHANGE. For at best, as the Apostle Paul wrote, we “see through a glass darkly.”  (1 Cor 13:12)

PRAY HARD. We don’t mean that you should beg. We aren’t beggars. Remember, on the cross Jesus said, “it is finished.” And Peter wrote that God “hath given unto us (past tense) all things that pertain to life and godliness.”

(Jn 19:30; 1 Pet 2:1) Let’s pray without anxiety, and offer thanks in advance for what we have yet to see. (Phil 4:6)

God resists anxiety, and responds to gratitude.
Jesus taught us to pray as if we already have that for which we are asking. So, regarding your future, remember that anxiety is an expression of doubt; and James warns us against doubtful praying. (Jas 1:6) In most cases, the greatest spiritual warfare we’ll face is to resist anxiety due to what we do see; and to pray with thanksgiving for what we don’t yet see! That is a fight of faith.

So friend, ACCEPT CHANGE. When we arrive at this confusing crossroads, it’s because we are about to experience a change in our assignment or our direction. Do not resist God-directed change. We are to be moving from glory to glory. Growth requires change. It demands it!

DO WHAT IS AT HAND--what is in front of you. Some people looking for life-direction shut down, give up, bail out, or retreat. Don’t do that. Be that soldier who runs TO the battle! There is always a need that you can fill, a person or cause you can serve. Continue to be God’s servant. How? Find someone with a bigger need than yours and serve them.

2012 had its challenges. I’m sure you agree. God is shifting us (Alice and me) in certain ways, though it’s yet unclear to us exactly how. So, we are focused on what is at hand—writing and teaching. We have updated and published seven books on Amazon’s Kindle. They are: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Praying People ($2.99); The One Minute Intercessor ($2.99); How to Be Heard in Heaven ($7.12);
Amazing God Encounters ($4.88); and Intercessors & Pastors ($6.99). We are trying to add at least one book to Kindle each week. You’ll find them on  http://Amazon.com The next will be, Discerning The Climate of The City. Other resources are available at:   http://PrayerBookstore.com

We are also writing new books. I (Eddie) have co-written a new book with real estate businessman Kenn Renner entitled: Maximum Dream Achievement: How You Can Live and Enjoy a Purpose-Full Life. Alice and I have almost finished writing a book to provide needed guidelines for successful prophetic ministry in the church.

We would be very grateful to have your partnership in this worldwide ministry. Many, including the nine ministries we support, are counting on us.

Thank you in advance!

Let us know how we can better serve you.

Seek God for the City: Fulfill-it prayers!

From Steve Hawthorne--

9651008900?profile=original

In these crazy days I want to urge you to continue praying with full-hearted confidence that God will act in the midst of our communities and families in ways that glorify His Son.

The only way I’ve seen people live and pray in such confidence is when their hope is shaped by God’s word and fixated on the life-giving power of the risen Son of God.

Without the word of God our prayers usually shrink to become what one pastor called, “fix-it” prayers. Too easily we are focused on our needs and we are defined by what we fear. Instead, that same pastor found that having his people pray through Seek God for the City helped them pray what he called, “fulfill-it” prayers, focused on what God has promised to do.

So let’s pray with the Scriptures. Let’s help each other stand and thrive in the truth of the Word of God. Let’s pray what God has promised with a sustained faith.

Seek God for the City 2013 is packed with newly written prayers designed to help ordinary people grow in hope. Look over a review copy and pray two or three of these prayers. Consider how these prayers can encourage people in your church or network of friends.

We still have some review copies for pastors and prayer leaders. Ordering is easy on our website (www.waymakers.org), or call us (800-264-5214) to learn about bulk discounts and how to help people from different congregations pray together in sustainable ways.

CHECHNYA - THE LONG-SUFFERING LAND

Religious Liberty Prayer Bulletin | RLPB 193 | Wed 16 Jan 2013

CHECHNYA: THE LONG-SUFFERING LAND

by Anneta Vyssotskaia

Chechnya (or Chechen Republic) is part of the Southern Federal District of the Russian Federation. It is located in the Northern Caucasus mountains and borders several other Russian republics and regions: Ingushetia, Northern Ossetia, Dagestan and Stavropolskii. It borders Georgia on the south. The population of Chechnya is now about 1.4 million, over 95 percent of whom are Chechen. Its Russian population was almost 50 percent in 1960s but is now less than two percent. Chechnya became part of the Russian Empire in the mid-16th Century. By the early 19th Century a large community of Russian Cossacks had formed on the territory of modern Chechnya.

Since becoming part of the Russian Empire the Chechen people were almost constantly fighting for their independence, continuing into the Soviet period. In 1944, by Stalin's decree, over half-a-million Chechen and Ingush people were deported forcefully from their land to Central Asia and Kazakhstan under most severe conditions and many perished during deportation. In 1957-58, during the time of Nikita Khrushchev, the Chechen people were allowed to return to their homeland. However, conflict started between the returning Chechen and the Russian population, especially in the area of the capital city, Grozny. Tensions grew after the collapse of the Soviet Union. This resulted in a series of armed conflicts and two wars, leaving behind multitudes of victims and refugees of different nationalities amongst the civilian population. In 2007 Ramzan Kadyrov became the President of the Chechen Republic with the support of the Russian government. In 2009 the Russian troops were withdrawn leaving Kadyrov in charge of Chechnya.

President Kadyrov supports traditional Sunni Islam, the main religion in Chechnya. This includes Sharia law, women wearing traditional Muslim clothes, polygamy and honour killings. Starting in the early 1990s many Chechen people and especially the youth were influenced greatly by radical Islam.

During the Chechen wars many church buildings of different denominations were destroyed, the believers were kidnapped, killed, raped, beaten, tortured or had to flee the country for the sake of their lives. The Baptist church in Grozny once had 300 members but by 2001 there was only a tiny group of elderly widows, others who survived having left the country.

Amongst Chechens, Christianity is considered the religion of the Russian people. It is totally unacceptable for a Chechen to become a Christian or a follower of any other religion. If one family member chooses another religion it is a disgrace for the whole family and brings a lot of persecution on the new convert. Converts are considered to be 'murtad' or traitors of their own religion and people. There are some reports about Chechen people becoming Christians and even pastors and evangelists but they are mainly amongst those who live outside Chechnya. The individual Chechens who become Christians in Chechnya have to remain secret believers because of the threat to their lives.

It is very difficult to obtain reliable information on the overall number of believers and churches in Chechnya. Information is available on the situation with Russian Orthodox churches of which there are several in Chechnya. During the last few years the Chechen government financed restoration of the Russian Orthodox churches destroyed during the Chechen wars. In 2011 the Russian Orthodox church performed a mass baptism of 35 people in the waters of the Terek River. In October 2012 there was a remarkable and significant event: the first full translation of the Bible into the Chechen language was presented to the participants of the Second Peacemaking conference in Grozny. This resulted from 15 years' translation work by the Institute of Bible Translation. Ominously, however, these advances are provoking escalating criticism and ruthless violence from radicalised Islamic extremists.

PLEASE THANK GOD SPECIFICALLY FOR -

* people who continue to seek truth and become followers of Jesus Christ in Chechnya despite all the persecution, asking him to provide his miraculous protection and cover for all his people in Chechnya.

* the individual faithful believers in Chechnya, praying for complete restoration of his Church there.

* the full translation of the Bible into the Chechen language, praying that he will reveal himself to many people in Chechnya through the Bible.

PLEASE PRAY SPECIFICALLY -

* for peace and restoration of the country and God's healing for all who have been wounded physically and emotionally and that feelings of hatred and revenge will give way to forgiveness and a desire to live in peace.

* that God will raise up a new generation of children and young people who will wish and be able to build a new foundation for all people to live in peace and harmony in Chechnya, and see the importance of religious freedom and respect for people of different nationalities and religious views.

My God, whom I praise, do no remain silent, for people who are wicked and deceitful have opened their mouths against me ... with words of hatred they surround me; they attack me without cause.

(Psalm 109:1-3 NIV)

SUMMARY TO USE IN BULLETINS UNABLE TO RUN THE WHOLE ARTICLE:

CHECHNYA, THE LONG-SUFFERING LAND

The people of Chechnya have a long history of fighting for independence. The collapse of the Soviet Union was followed by several armed conflicts and wars. President Ramzan Kadyrov strongly supports Sunni Islam, the country's main religion. However, many younger people have been strongly radicalised by violent Islamist extremists. Christianity is considered the religion for Russians and any Chechen becoming a Christian would be treated as 'murtad' - a traitor of Islam and Chechnya who should be killed. However, despite threats and difficulties, there are Christians amongst Chechen people, mostly secret believers or living outside Chechnya. Significantly, the first full Chechyan translation of the Bible was introduced at a conference in Grozny, the capital, in October 2012. Please pray for God's protection of believers and the growth of his Church.

Liberating Afghanistan and Pakistan from the Taliban: An Urgent Call to Prayer for 2013

January 15, 2013

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We need your help in this special prayer focus for 2013. Would you please join us in prayer and circulate this call to prayer to other intercessors you know? We will monitor how things go within these two countries as the year goes by and update you on how the Lord answers.

The Taliban are a group of radical Islamists that are threatening the survival of both Afghanistan and Pakistan and the security of the rest of our world. If they succeed along with allied terrorist groups in taking over these two nations, they will proclaim that militant Islam has triumphed and will be emboldened to launch attacks against the rest of the world from this base. As Pakistan has nuclear weapons, they could fall into the hands of these radical Islamists and be used against Israel, the West and other nations. It is of paramount importance that we as intercessors engage in united prayer for His protection and deliverance of these two nations.

Driven by their fanatical ideology and possessed by a spirit of violence and death, the Taliban have been wreaking havoc in both Afghanistan and Pakistan over the last decade. At 9/11, the rest of the world saw the destructive capacity of Al Qaeda, supported by the Taliban, to thrust their dagger even into the heart of the western world. The Taliban are primarily made up of the Pashtun ethnic group (called Pathans in the attached people group profile) that span the border of both nations and have been called "the most resistant unreached people in the world". Captive to their warlike culture and code of honor that requires blood revenge, they are constantly fighting and killing one another and those from other ethnic groups. Since 2007, they also have murdered 16 Christian workers in Afghanistan. In Pakistan, they have wiped out possibly hundreds of Christian believers, also destroying their villages, churches, and homes.

Not all Pashtun are Taliban or serve as instruments of violence, but we suspect that this people group in general has become traumatized by centuries of fighting off invading armies. As a result, the Pashtun have become both the recipients and purveyors of terrible atrocities of war and human suffering. We believe this could be the way that Satan has gotten a grip upon their psyche and culture as a people and is now using them in the form of the Taliban and other allied terrorist groups to carry out his agenda to "kill, steal and destroy". Jesus identified the devil as the "liar and murderer from the beginning". It is he that we must come against in faith-filled prayer to see the Taliban dissolve and these two nations set free from their destructive influence.

After the fall of the Taliban Regime in 2001, they slowly regrouped and have since then continuously gained power. Many military leaders have now conceded that they cannot win this war militarily. Fighting with physical weapons as the Coalition forces have done in Afghanistan the last 11 years cannot be ultimately successful against spiritual forces of evil. We have seen that mobilization of prayer leaders and intercessors as well as praying children can be effective in putting the principalities and powers to flight in nations. Here are a few examples:

  • In Cambodia, the Khmer Rouge, worshippers of a serpent demon, began to give up their maniacal, murderous struggle and surrendered to the government two months after a mass prayer mobilization was launched in 1994-1995.
  • In Burma, thousands of children have been praying for their nation since last year, and there are now sweeping political changes going on.
  • Many other cases from Bosnia, Sri Lanka and nations of Africa could be mentioned where God has used national prayer initiatives to end wars, create governments of national unity and bring about peaceful development. Some African nations now even have born-again presidents who are involved in nationwide prayer efforts!

Afghanistan

In Afghanistan, since the mid 1990s, prayer teams started to go into the country, and in the beginning of 2001 the Lord impressed on the hearts of local Christian workers to prophetically proclaim an end to Taliban control. As thousands around the world prayed, this came to pass by the end of that year. Hundreds of Christian workers came in to help the nation in humanitarian and development efforts. Things improved dramatically. However, the ground was not held through ongoing intercession and the Taliban have come back, threatening to take over again. Many organizations and their workers have left the country due to threats, attacks or being closed down. During the last two years, twelve more Christian workers have been killed by the Taliban.

Large areas of the country have come again under the control of the Taliban, and all four access roads into Kabul, the capital, are now threatened with insecurity. Many locals are nervous and want to leave the country because the Coalition forces have announced they plan to withdraw in 2014. In addition, President Karzai will be leaving power since new elections will be held during that same year. Afghans know their government will probably not hold together and is likely to be overthrown by the Taliban with terrible violence for the nation as the result.

Pakistan

In Pakistan, the Taliban are Islamic fundamentalists who are forcing their beliefs upon society at any cost. In recent years, as the government has sought to ban and stop the Taliban, they have risen up with new names and expanded across the country imposing their beliefs. Physically, they are now almost an unstoppable force in the hands of the devil.

Pakistan is being rocked by suicide bombings and assassinations and is ruled by a corrupt and inept government that is unable to maintain order or lead the nation out of the political, economic and religious quagmire into which it has descended. The national elections that may happen early in 2013 are not likely to help as they will most likely be accompanied by riots and other destabilizing acts of violence and conflict. If a certain political party comes to power, that will  strengthen the Taliban even more.

People live in a constant state of fear, wondering if they will return in safety to their homes or if their area will be the next place of attack. For their own safety, they try to travel a different road each time. Those who can afford it always travel with armed guards. Most public places are surrounded by guards; even churches have guards for safety. A significant exodus of educated and wealthy people is occurring. Those without the means to leave are being left with a feeling of despair as they feel that those who can help them are now leaving the country to the Taliban and the fundamentalists.

The pirs, Islamic spirit mediums, have a huge influence over political leaders and also have empowered the Taliban for their terrorist actions in both Afghanistan and Pakistan. Government education has almost completely failed and left a vacuum. In its place, pirs and their fundamentalist schools or madrassahs are raising up a generation of fanatics who are willing to lay down their lives for the beliefs of the Taliban. For example, thousands of suicide bombers are being trained to carry out their demonic activities locally as well has throughout the world.

Since the first missionaries came to Pakistan to reach the Pashtuns, dozens of them have been killed by them. The latest victim was a Swedish missionary lady who had served for many years there. She was shot and died in December 2012. Numerous Pakistani Christians have also been killed for their faith over the years. The Taliban have also targeted and attacked more liberal people who are concerned for human and minority rights within the country.

A spirit of death and violence stalks Pakistan as well as Afghanistan and manifests itself most strongly through the Taliban. The best military powers in the world with all their sophisticated weapons have not been able to stop this demonic force. The battle must first be won in the heavens. If Afghanistan and Pakistan collapse, they will surely become launching pads for awful destruction to be carried to the rest of our world. We, therefore, propose the following strategy for mobilizing prayer for the deliverance of these two embattled, broken nations:

  1. Declare a year of prayer for the Taliban (Pashtuns) in Afghanistan and Pakistan throughout 2013 and inviting prayer networks and intercessors across the world to partner with us for this project, including especially praying children.
  2. Send out monthly one-page prayer alerts with in-depth, strategic information to guide united intercession and enable the prayer of agreement for specific desired changes.
  3. Encourage teams of veteran prayer leaders to go into both countries during 2013 to pray on-site and encourage the local believers and prayer groups.
  4. To initiate monthly or bi-monthly Skype calls for updating prayer network leaders and praying in agreement for the liberation of both nations and the dissolution of the Taliban.

Here are some first prayer concerns we want to share with you for the coming month:

  1. Ask that the Lord would raise up many intercessors from around the world who will join us in serious and dedicated prayer till we see a change in Afghanistan and Pakistan,  an army of intercessors that will join wholeheartedly in this spiritual battle.
  2. That the Taliban movement in both countries would be completely thrown into confusion, disunity and crushed. They are trying to set up political headquarters in either Dubai or Saudi Arabia. May this not happen. We continue to proclaim "Taliban Time/Rule is over". Satan's power over the taliban will be broken.
  3. That the Taliban leaders would either surrender, give up and stop fighting or that they would be taken out before they spread even more violence and bloodshed. Especially let this happen for their key people like Mullah Omar, Gulbadin Hekmatyar, the Haqqanis and other high-ranking leaders.
  4. That the demonic unity between the Taliban and their allies be broken and that they would turn against each other.
  5. That the fear of God fall on them and as many as possible of their key leaders would be converted to Christ.
  6. Pashtun tribal leaders throughout the areas where the Taliban operate would be so fed-up with the Taliban and their allies that they would not allow them to use their territory anymore and start opposing them. It happened already in some areas, and it should spread out throughout the Pashtun areas.
  7. Talks are going on between the US president and the Afghan president about how many troops should remain. Pray that a strong force would be allowed to stay as long as necessary and that the Afghan army would be strengthened enough to protect the nation and overcome the Taliban threats.
  8. Elections are to be held in Pakistan in the Spring. A party very sympathetic to the Taliban and that promises to bring in Sharia law is popular and predicted to win. Pray for a moderate party to win and one that will rule with justice.
  9. For protection of the Christians that are a tiny proportion of the population in both countries. They are facing increasing persecution. May they be encouraged and strengthened and come together in unity to pray for their troubled nations.

Every Sunday football's faithful
robed in sacred color schemes
chant their praises to the pigskin god on high.
In cathedrals (domed and open)
these devoted fans converge
raising arms (as if in worship) to the sky.

On the field a reenactment
of some ancient sacrifice
calls to mind the gladiator's brute and gore.
With vicarious allegiance
those who look-on
feel the pain as they pray the pigskin god will fix the score.

It's religion pure and simple.
There's a liturgy observed
by the priests with whistles clad in black-and-white.
And the banners they're unfurling
call to mind transgressions made
making clear the cost of penance in plain sight.

The conversion rate is stunning.
New believers fill the seats
as they flock each week to find community.
It's a fellowship like family
where nobody feels alone.
That is why it is their faith's  identity.

What was once a fun amusement
has become idolatry.
Even pastors cancel church for play-off games.
Yes, the Lord's Day has been
tackled and then sidelined (left for dead)
and the worst part is it's
happened without shame.

If you’re frustrated today in your attempts to win lost people to Christ or lead believers into a deeper relationship with Him, remember this one indispensable key: People must want what you have. If they don’t want to be like you, you’re wasting your time in trying to get them to respond to your message.

This principle brings up memories of Bill Green, someone I haven’t seen in over 35 years. After hearing my story about Bill, see if you think I owe him an apology.

Bill can best be described as a Bible geek. With thick glasses, unkempt hair, and woefully out-of-style clothes, you might picture him as resembling George McFly in the “Back to the Future” movies.

But Bill really knew the Bible, and I’ve never to this day met anyone as committed to one-on-one discipleship.

I had given my heart to Christ as a senior in high school, and I met Bill just a year or two later. He offered to come to my college dorm and disciple me, and at first I happily agreed. I was hungry to know more of God’s Word, and he was eager to teach anyone who would listen.

Sadly, it turned out that Bill and I only got together for our Bible studies three different times. I remember these distinctly, and I can still recite the three specific teachings. In many ways, they became a valuable part of my spiritual foundation, and I also was deeply impacted by Bill’s incredible passion for teaching the Bible to new believers like me.

So why didn’t Bill and I continue to get together? If I gained so much in only three sessions, just think what a Bible genius I could have been if I had hung in there for several years.

However, I soon decided I was “too busy” to continue being discipled by Bill Green.

Although I’m sure I could have learned more great information from Bill, that’s not the full story. You see, discipleship is not just a matter of passing along Bible facts from one person to another. Jesus puts it in nutshell in Luke 6:40 when He says that every disciple will become like his teacher.

The bottom line was that, even though I admired Bill Green’s knowledge of the Bible, I didn’t want to become like him in his personality, demeanor, and attitudes.

I admit that some of this was simply being turned off by his geekiness and his George McFly grooming style and wardrobe. (Can you imagine how your friends would react if George McFly came to visit you regularly at your college dorm?)

But my brief experience in discipleship with Bill Green also served as a warning that Bible knowledge is only one component of the discipleship process. As the apostle Paul warned, “Knowledge puffs up while love builds up” (1 Corinthians 8:1 NIV). Although I was attracted by Bill’s Bible knowledge, I was very turned off by his life.

I still feel bad that I wasn’t able to overlook Bill’s social awkwardness and dorky appearance. I could have learned a lot from him.

Yet there’s a hidden leadership principle tucked away in God’s instruction about those who would serve as priests in Old Testament days (Leviticus 21:18). Those who had a mutilated or disfigured face couldn’t serve as leaders. Translating this over to the New Testament, the issue isn’t about outward appearance at all. Rather, it’s about accurately reflecting the image of Christ, which requires much more than just communicating Bible factoids.

If you pride yourself on astute communication of Bible knowledge to your would-be followers, remember this leadership key from Paul: Not content to just pass on the Message, we wanted to give you our hearts. And we did” (1 Thessalonians 2:8 MSG). People have to be attracted as much by your LIFE as they’re attracted to your message.

The Power of Group Prayer

It turned out that Jimmy was suicidal.

Our youth staff team met with him after he had attended an outreach event we hosted at his high school. He later came to Christ, but his emotional, mental, and spiritual challenges were frankly, overwhelming to us at times.

I remember that on one occasion we all entered into a time of focused prayer for Jimmy. We listened to each other pray for him and in that concentrated time we also listened to what the Holy Spirit was saying to us individually and as a team.

In the months after that concentrated prayer time for Jimmy, we were able to involve him in a Friday night Bible study at the home of a dedicated Christian family. They took him under their wing, in addition to the time investment our team was giving to him.

In the years that followed, he became established in his faith and identity; even his outward appearance and expressions became more positive. He finished college, met a wonderful Christian girl, and now is married and is a new father. Of course, he was prayed for many times throughout the years. But looking back, the deep, concentrated time of group prayer we had for him turned out to be powerful!

We all know how effective prayer is, and we have often seen the miracles of prayer expressed in various ways and forms. As E.M. Bounds wrote, “Prayer is of transcendent importance, for it is the mightiest agent to advance God’s work…only praying hearts and hands do God’s work…prayer succeeds when all else fails. Prayer has won great victories and has rescued, with notable triumph God’s saints when every other hope was gone.”

Prayer in your network

Most youth worker meetings include a time of prayer. More than likely, these occur at the end of a meeting and include quick prayer requests and quick prayers. Although this is often the norm, what I am excited about is the effectiveness and power that happens when we enter into deep and concentrated group prayer.

This form of praying is actually linked to having a deep and personal conversation with God. As in a conversation with friends and family, it includes listening and expressing and sometimes exhausting a topic before moving on to another.

As we enter into focused, concentrated group prayer it is good to quiet our hearts with a time of silence and confession. We are then much more sensitive to pray under the direction and in alignment with the Holy Spirit.

I love the passage in Romans 8:26-27, “The Holy Spirit helps us in our distress. For we don’t even know what we should pray for, nor how we should pray. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that can not be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.”

Not surprisingly, the Holy Spirit gives us impressions, thoughts, and specific verses about how to pray for someone or something specifically.

I remember one time praying with a mother about her daughter’s lack of Christian friends. Her daughter often felt alone and alienated at her high school. During our concentrated time of prayer together, I felt the Holy Spirit impressing me to pray that her daughter, Lisa would want to go on an overseas project that we were leading that year. After the prayer time with my friend, I invited Lisa to go with us. Through the project training times and the actual overseas experience Lisa made lasting friends with several other students on the project. They are still friends 10 years later!

Listening carefully to what others say in prayer along with the impressions of the Holy Spirit makes us much more sensitive in expressing our own thoughts and prayers. We can agree with others about what they pray, or share a pertinent Scripture, because we are involved in a conversation.

Making it work in your schedule

The main hindrance to this very effective way of praying is time. As a society and as youth workers, we often are pressured by time constraints. One suggestion is to divide the group up into smaller groups, with each group taking just one or two requests. That way, you can pray more effectively and all concerns can be covered. Sometimes, the request is so important or life-threatening that the entire prayer time needs to be devoted to it.

I think the early apostles might have used this focused, concentrated style of prayer. In Acts 4 it says “After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.”

How I would love to see our prayer times become truly revolutionary- then we couldn’t wait to pray and trust God to work. Shake us up Lord!

The 6:4 Fellowship

The 6:4 Fellowship is a pastor-to-pastor community that exists to encourage, equip and connect pastors toward the priorities of prayer and the ministry of the Word.  Every pastor could benefit by being a member of this ministry.  Great encouragement in a great direction.

Together. Listening. Praying.

We want to not only
encourage you to engage in more and better corporate prayer, we also want to
help equip you.  This is the primary
reason for writing
United
and Ignited: Encountering God through Dynamic Corporate Prayer
.

It is also the reason we will be sharing some portions of it here in the
IMPACT.

(Question) 1.2  How is Dynamic Corporate Prayer different
from “individual prayer in a group setting?”

Dynamic corporate prayer
should not be thought of as a replacement for any other style of praying.  Its components are useful in contemplative
prayer, spiritual warfare, intercession, and praise.  In fact, the style of prayer I am advocating
for in this book is not the only very powerful means of corporate prayer.  Paul exhorts us to pray using “all kinds of
prayers” (Eph 6:18).  The kind of prayer
that has flowed out of the Prayer Summit movement is not completely unique, but
it is not as familiar as many other kinds of prayer.

If we
grew up around prayer, then most of us grew up with what could be known as the
“prayer microphone” type of corporate prayer.
There may be 15 people in the room and Bill takes his opportunity to
step up to the “prayer microphone” and pray what is on his heart.  It is a good prayer.  Then Mary takes her turn and prays through
the requests that are closest to her.
After her, Jane prays her burden.
It is probable that most of the 15 people pray and yet none of the
prayers are connected to each other in any way.
This is what I call “individual prayer in a group setting.”

When I
say dynamic corporate prayer I am referring to prayers that…

·      are
connected to what has just been prayed.

·      hear
and catch a prayer theme; develop a flow.

·      are
influenced by the prayers of others.

·       influence
the prayers of others.

·       flow
more from listening than from
lists.

·       focus
on agreement or harmonious prayers.
