What is a G@P group?

What Happens in a G@P group?

What is a G@P group? A G@P group is a Grandparents @ Prayer intercessory prayer group of grandparents joining to pray for their grandchildren.

Don’t you love the picture of grandmothers coming together to pray for their grandchildren in Oregon?

It’s a place where grandparents gather to pray for their grandchildren, sharing their struggles, getting ideas and encourage each other to grandparent with a purpose.

Just as Esther stood in the gap for her people when their lives were threatened we can stand in the gap for our grandchildren as their lives are threatened spiritually.

Perhaps at no other time in our history is a call to prayer more urgently required than it is today. Together grandparents can link arms in prayer for the sake of the next generation.

There are many G@P prayer groups in the U.S., Canada and South Africa. At a church I visited recently there was a group of grandmothers and a group of grandfathers uniting in prayer for their grandchildren in Florida. Yesterday I received a phone call where I learned that a group of eight grandmothers pray together each week in a conference call.

Read the stories from two grandparents who have found the G@P prayer groups benefical.

1.  Praying with a group of grandmothers is a wonderful experience... we all have one mindset . . . the salvation, protection, and covering for our grandchildren.

2.  Our GAP group that meets once a month is a wonderful support. It has been so nice to get to know other "praying" grandparents and to hear and share our stories and to know we are not alone. What a gift to pray with and for other grandparents and to know they are lifting my grandchildren up in prayer and to be able to share in other's victories and answers to prayer.

Will you make a decision to invite other grandparents to pray with you for your grandchildren?

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children and grandchildren are walking in the truth.” III John 4

Fire in the Night In Your City

“Your city is God’s city. The people are made in His image. Satan is an invader and a usurper operating in our territory. God did not give demons authority over your city. Demons have infested the earth’s atmosphere since before the creation of mankind, but they can only extend their authority into a town or an institution when people sin. When you look into the history of your city, you will find clues as to what is oppressing the people today. This is our planet, and the only authority Satan has is stolen human authority.”

Buildings were set ablaze, businesses were looted, cars were torched, and gunshots were fired. There was fire in the night! Police and violent protesters were all over the main street. Anger and emotions were high. The situation was tense as agitators and violent protestors forced police to fire tear gas. This all happened recently in Ferguson, Missouri in the U.S., but it can happen anywhere. Violence is increasing in cities all over the world.

This rise of crime touches us deeply because we desperately want to see peace in our cities. In the above quote, John Dawson emphasizes the fact that this is our planet and that our cities belongs to God. We have authority in prayer to protect and change the atmosphere of our city, but we must learn to fervently pray in faith with watchful eyes. The Greek words used for “to guard” are “gregoreuo” and “agrupneo,” which both mean to be awake or sleepless. This implies protection.

We need to be God’s watchmen day and night on the lookout for danger in our cities.

The Night Watch

"I will allow no sleep to my eyes, no slumber to my eyelids, till I find a place for the LORD, a dwelling place of the Mighty One of Jacob" (Psalm 132:4).

At the same time as violence increases worldwide, God is raising up prayer in churches and cities, and he is also raising up the Night Watch. Many will rise up to this call and embrace the lifestyle of the Night Watch. Here at the International House of Prayer in Kansas City (IHOPKC Prayer Room), there are many who love to pray in the middle of the night. It especially appeals to the youth and is called Fire in the Night. The Holy Spirit is stirring the hearts of a community of people worldwide who will pray and contend for the mercy and power of God in the night season (Joel 1:13).

They will be vigilant and watchful.

The Fire in the Night Watchmen at IHOP make a lifestyle change. They actually rearrange their lives in order to intercede through the night hours. They train their bodies to adjust to a new time schedule in eating and sleeping. They are intercessors, singers, and musicians who believe that they will see the Lord's victory in the night. We can most effectively do works of justice in the context of night and day prayer. We desperately need God's justice in our cities. The atmosphere of God's presence and fire in the night opens the way for justice and the harvest of souls.

"And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones who cry out to him day and night? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly"
(Luke 18:7-8).

Psalm 134 speaks of those in the night watch. This is critical to the divine strategy of God in order to see transformation in our cities. So many evil things happen in the night—murder, theft, immorality, and witchcraft. Light can invade the darkness through prayer and worship. We receive the blessing that the Lord promises those who minister in His house through the night.

“Praise the LORD, all you servants of the LORD who minister in the house of the LORD. Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and praise the LORD. May the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth, bless you from Zion” (Psalm 134).

As we look at what took place in Ferguson, there is an urgency of the hour to pray for our cities. The present emphasis on prayer makes day and night prayer a possibility in this generation. The commitment of a rising group of young people to be God’s night watchmen should stimulate each one of us to give ourselves to prayer. Let’s seek to be people who learn to pray not only in the day but also in the night. "On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night" (Psalm 63:6).

As more of God’s people pray and bless the Lord at night, the spiritual atmosphere changes in the city. His fire is released in the night!

How to Pray for Your City

"I have posted watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; they will never be silent day and all night. You who call on the LORD, give yourselves no rest, and give him no rest till he establishes Jerusalem and makes her the praise of the earth" (Isaiah 62:6-7).

The following are some ways you can bring authoritative intercession for your city into your prayer life:

  • Cover your city with continuous praise and worship - God gives you His heart for your city through worship and a positive attitude. Instead of complaining and reacting toward the sin in your city, praise God for the good things. Satan is already an accuser, so praising God and declaring by faith the eternal purpose and dream of God over your city brings in His presence and defeats the enemy.

  • Wait on the Lord for insight - Don’t depend on your own wisdom, but listen to God with childlike dependence. God will open your eyes as to what He wants to do in your city when you set aside your own agenda and wait upon Him. The Lord will give you His strategies for reaching and blessing your city.

  • Identify with the sins of the city - We can all identify with the roots of any sin in our city. The potential is in each one of us. We need to identify in personal and corporate repentance. Nehemiah identified with the sins in his city and prayed: I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father’s family, have committed against you” (Nehemiah 1:6-7).

  • Overcome evil with good - Come in the opposite spirit. If there is a lot of violence, demonstrate the spirit of peace. If your city is full of greed, demonstrate generosity. If there is hate, live a life of love. This will give you great victory in your city.

  • Travail over your city - Just as a pregnant woman travails to give birth to a child, you birth God’s dream in your city through travail (John 16:21). You must pray until something happens; this takes dedication and perseverance. This has everything to do with faith for your city and revival. The Apostle Paul is an excellent example (2 Corinthians 11:27-28).

A few years ago we were praying day and night in southern Spain. I remember a particularly weary time of prayer early in the morning while it was still dark, and I was feeling very alone in the prayer room. God reminded me of when Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane and His disciples fell asleep. He had asked them to watch with Him. In the same way, I felt like the Lord was quietly and tenderly speaking to me, saying:

"Will you not watch with me one hour? Will you not watch and pray here in the dark for the land and the salvation of souls?"

I realized at that moment that I needed to say "yes" to the Lord. He is looking for those who will stand watch even when it is not easy. He is looking for those with an intense desire to see His peace and presence in their city. We have two possibilities before us. We can either release God's holy fire in the night or the enemy will release fires of sin and destruction in our cities. Will you be God’s watchman at such an important hour, even when others are sleeping?

Will you release His fire in the night through pray until He brings deliverance to your city?

A Prayer for Your City

Dear Lord, change the atmosphere of our city through our prayers. Help us to guard our city as watchmen. Our city belongs to You [Name your city.] Teach us to continually cover it with praise and worship day and night. We long to release Your fire in the night season. Give us insight into how to pray for our city and how to take action in love as we wait on You. Teach us the secret of travailing prayer. Give us great faith for peace and revival for our city. We will pray until Your deliverance comes. We choose to give ourselves no rest (Isaiah 62:6-7). We praise You for You are mighty and powerful, and You can do all things. We choose to remember Your name in the night. We praise You for what You are going to do in our city as we pray and reach out to the lost. In Jesus’ name, amen.

"I have [earnestly] remembered Your name, O Lord, in the night, and I have observed Your law" (Psalm 119:55).

Out of Gas

A PERSONAL STORY

A number of years ago, while serving on the State Council for the Church of God in California, I drove to Sacramento for a board meeting. I was near empty when I pulled into the office parking lot. The meeting was scheduled to last until supper, but instead, it ran past ten o’clock. I pulled out on the Freeway and headed home looking for gas stations that were still open. I took the connector route from Highway 99 to Interstate 5. I knew, once on I-5, I had few opportunities for fuel. But one all-night station was my goal. Sadly, unaware, I took a route that placed me on the interstate just south of that station. Too late, I realized that I was virtually on fumes. Modesto was still only a few miles east. I turned. Ahead were lights – gas! No, the station was closed.

The bar next door was hopping. I should have been more realistic, walked into that bar, and asked for someone to call AAA. I didn’t. An inebriated soul seemed sober and lucid enough to offer directions. I was the fool. I headed east, took the turn south, turned again at the fork. I was hopeful. But when I crossed a set of railroad tracks and the road suddenly narrowed, a sinking, sick feeling took over. The road turned east. A farm house was to the south, but the carnivorous dogs did not seem an inviting welcoming committee. There were no lights, no signs of activity. It was near midnight now. Suddenly, the pavement ended. I ventured on. What could I do? The gravel road turned north. And then it happened. The car lurched. The dash lights flashed. The engine became quiet. I was out of gas.

For a full five, maybe ten minutes, I sat in the car that I had steered to the middle of the road and prayed. I could hear the cars on the interstate to the west. But there were fences, an orchard and bog between the car and that interstate – who knows what else. I could walk ahead. But I had no knowledge of where the road actually led or if it led anywhere.I could return to the farmhouse, fight off the Dobermans, wake up the farmer, dodge bullets, and if I was still alive ask for help.

Now out of the car, standing under the California sky, I knew I should not stay there all night. That was when I heard the sound of a truck, not far away on the freeway, but closer. Then, I could see the lights of a Semi-Trailer Truck. He was headed my way. He rounded the corner and almost immediately, he must have seen my car in the middle of the road with the emergency lights flashing. He stopped almost fifty yards from me. There was no backing up. I am sure he was calculating his options. Was he being held up? High-jacked? Was I alone? I raised both hands and started walking slowly toward him. He waited and watched. I approached the driver side of the cab, and confessed my foolish mistake. Within minutes, I was on board and headed for the gas-station I had missed earlier.

He was carrying a late load, an unusual thing for him, and he had taken the gravel short-cut, which he said was rarely used. A dump was near, “Bad things happen out here,” he shared. I might have been there all night or days, or – shutter the thought. He was a nice guy. I wondered – an angel? His language soon cleared that up. And that is when I had a wonderful chance to share my faith. Arriving at the all-night gas station, I hopped out and hunted down the manager. He put in a call for his emergency tow truck driver. As I waited, again, I had a wonderful opportunity to share Christ.

Soon my emergency ride was on-site. He was a scraggly looking character. His beard was mere stubble. He had the capacity to hold a cigarette in the corner of his mouth, seemingly attached only to his lower lip, while the most profuse profanity flowed out of the hole. There was a cavalier insensitivity about him, a disorder about his whole person. I put away my gospel seed pouch, concluding that the ground here was too hard.

He pointed to a broken down truck. Since I did not need to be towed, we would take his vehicle. He filled up the spare fuel tank. And then he proceeded to put a bit of gas in his pick-up, while rocking it furiously. “You have to burp it,” he apologetically said, poking his head into the driver’s window. I wondered if I were at all sane, making this trip out into the forsaken area where I had left my car.

“Did you pay?” he asked. “Yes,” I said. But my claim was met with a look of total distrust and skepticism. “Wanna see my receipt?” He said, “Yes!” I dug out the receipt where I had paid for his service and the gasoline we would put into my vehicle. He checked out the receipt. I asked, as he did, if he also wanted to see my ministerial ordination papers. I shouldn’t have displayed such a twisted sense of humor. He looked a bit puzzled.

On the road, his aging vehicle began to spit and sputter so severely that I wondered if we might need to call another road service. He patted the dash, talked to the truck – more eccentric behavior. And then, quite suddenly, he explained his earlier brusqueness. He had responded to some midnight calls, taken the needy person to their vehicle, and returned to the station only to discover that they had not paid for either the service or the gas. Suddenly, I saw an open door. “When others do us wrong, the sting is so apparent isn’t it? That is because there is this line in our hearts that lights up. It was put there by God. All of us know about it, feel it and sense it. I am sorry that happened to you!”

He turned sideways in the pick-up. It was like he had picked up an alien! He knew now, that I had not been kidding about the ministerial ordination. We began to talk about faith and God, in the most sincere way. Standing on the gravel road, putting fuel in my car, under the California sky, we had a moment together. He had lived in Indiana. He and his wife shared a single-wide mobile home with their infant child. A tornado had ripped through the park, picked up their fragile home and tossed it around. They found themselves outside, miraculously alive, but the daughter was nowhere to be found. Only a pile of twisted metal and debris lay where their home had once stood. They tore through the rubble. From some distant place, the wind had picked up pieces of steel rebar and driven into the remains of their mobile home. Bits and pieces of metal and were collected on the rebar like meat on a skewer. They were horrified. If their child were in the rubble – would they find the little girl alive?

As they peeled back the shattered remains, they looked for signs of life. Then near the bottom of the pile, they came upon a large frame, the picture still inside, face down. As they turned it over, it was a print of Jesus they had never seen before. It had not hung in their house. They had no idea where it might have come from. In the picture, Jesus was holding a lamb, overlooking a flock of sheep. Underneath was their little girl, unharmed, except for a tiny bump on the head.

Under the stars, I had an opportunity to affirm God’s goodness, his grace in sparing the family, his purposes for all our lives. I took his hand and standing in the middle of the road, in the middle of the night – we prayed. We cried. We sensed God’s presence.

That apology, not for something I had done, but for the insensitivity of others touched “the line in his heart” and led to an amazing opportunity for witness.

Where may God place you this Thanksgiving? Somewhere He wants His gospel shared? His plan of forgiveness understood? Be open and ready. 1 Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear…

Keep Prayer Simple

The following is from my upcoming book, One-Minute Devotions on Prayer:

“And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they’ll be heard because of their many words.” (Matthew 6:7)

When teaching about prayer, Jesus instructs us to keep prayer simple. But how easy it is to complicate! We worry about placing the “right” words in the “right” places, saying holy statements that sound good, not praying for too long or too short—oh my, what’s the right amount of time?

And as a result, we stress about prayer like we’re being judged by our performance. But all along, Jesus wants us to keep our prayers simple. He’s not impressed by bigger words, longer prayers, or professional-sounding speech. And he’s not turned off by our ums, uhs or stutters. Why?

9651018869?profile=original

Because Jesus is more interested in you! When I’m with my children, I’m not judging their speech or critiquing the conversation. Instead, I’m listening to them and enjoying my time with them.

Did you ever notice that the better you get to know someone, the simpler the conversation gets? We tend to be more formal with strangers and less formal with our friends and family. Jesus says it’s the pagans—those who don’t know

Jesus—who babble on. But the ones who know him—those he calls family—have no need for complexity.

Let’s pray: “Jesus, thank you that we’re family and prayer can be simple. Help me to relax when I pray and know that most of all, you’re interested in me.”

7 Things to Pray for Emerging Leaders

I recently participated in the National Prayer Assembly hosted by America’s National Prayer Committee and was asked to lead prayer for emerging leaders. I think of an emerging leader as one whom God is lining up to lead. It’s not a distinction of chronological age, but rather the work of God–children and youth can be emerging leaders as well as older people. It depends on whom God is in the midst of preparing to release into leadership.

We must be praying for these people now. Here are seven things to pray for emerging leaders:

Pray that emerging leaders will have strong relationships with God that produce supernatural work far exceeding what the leaders can accomplish by their own giftedness.
Leaders’ authority and ability to lead comes primarily from a vibrant relationship with God, not from talent, knowledge, or spiritual gifting. Leaders partner with God to accomplish the impossible and aren’t satisfied doing even amazing work that comes from their own hands. They exceed their natural potential by working together with God in accordance with his will. Most of the amazing work done in our world was done on natural ability alone, so imagine what’s possible when we partner with God.

Pray that emerging leaders will be students of God’s word so they can discern God’s will, stay free from deception, and not be swayed by cultural shifts.
The leader is a student of the Bible who studies it often to stay grounded in God’s ways. Without a firm foundation, the leader can be deceived and in turn deceive followers. Therefore, the leader is committed to being shaped by God’s word so he can discern God’s will. As the culture continues to shift away from biblical values, it’s vital to stay grounded in God’s word.

Pray that emerging leaders will value character more than results.
The leader has a deep, godly character and good reputation. The fruit of the Spirit is evident in his life. He values the development of character over the attainment of results. He is beyond accusation of immoral behavior and surrounds himself with accountable relationships to protect personal integrity. It’s an easy temptation for leaders to value what they’re doing more than who they’re becoming.

9651017889?profile=original

Pray that emerging leaders will be devoted to personal and corporate prayer.
Not just giving lip service to prayer, the leader is devoted to personal and corporate prayer. He prays through decisions to seek God’s guidance and friendship and prays with others on a regular basis. Prayer is not practiced as an “obligation” or “best practice,” but as a passionate desire of a sincere heart. Prayer is the root of your relationship with God, so a strong prayer life will yield a strong life in God.

Pray that emerging leaders will be committed to marriage and family before work and ministry.
If leaders are married and have children, they’re committed to building strong marriages and families before work and ministry. Their spouses feel like they’re the most important person in their life. They raise children to love God. And they encourage others to do the same. Disintegration of marriage and family is a battle that leaders must overcome.

Pray that emerging leaders will be able to lead from faith and sight.
Leaders are called to live by faith, which is what they don’t yet see manifested. At the same time, they have to work from sight, which is the current manifested reality. They motivate others to see the future vision, but work well with what they have now. Leaders can lead from both realms. We need leaders who can see by faith, but practically can lead until what was faith becomes sight.

Pray that emerging leaders will build a successful team and use technology well.
Leaders who can build successful teams accomplish better work than on their own. They know their strengths and weaknesses and enlist others to fill in the gaps. Leaders aren’t just interested in finishing the project, but building up the people involved. They also have a good handle on technology and rather than being mastered by it, can master it. As online accessibility, information, and technology increases, an independent spirit in leaders can stifle teamwork.

PRAYER THAT PRODUCES LOVE

Prayer is certainly bound together with love. Prayer is the expression of love. And love ought to be the motivation for our prayers. In Matthew 5:44 Jesus commanded His followers, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” You do not love your enemies, if you are not praying for them. And prayer is a powerful means of developing love for those who are difficult to love. I believe it is an expression of love to pray for someone you bitterly dislike, simply out of obedience. Because God has told you to someone, you struggle to ask Him to work in her life. But as you carry that out day by day, the love of Christ for that person will grow in your heart and mind.

I would like you to try this exercise. Make a list of people you have trouble loving. Maybe it is someone who wronged you or someone you care about. Maybe it is a person whose attitudes or behavior you do not approve. The very thought of them irritates you. Most of us can come up with a list of 4 or 5 such people off the top of our heads. You may ask God to bring such people to your mind. When you have the list, take time to pray for these people every day for a week. You may be tempted to pray for God to bring them into judgment, but you don't want to pray that kind of prayer for someone Jesus died to redeem. I think it is acceptable to begin by praying for God to change them or bring them to repentance.  From there you can ask God to show you how to pray for them. At the end of the week take an assessment of your attitude toward them. It will have changed. You will be drawn nearer to the heart of God.

“The will of the one who sent us is that we be the one who was sent. What we do is meant to be lived out of the context of discovering and becoming the person we are.” (Robert Benson, Between the Dreaming and the Coming True)

Mount Nittany is the highest place in our city. When I look across the valley from up there, I see homes, businesses, and schools; I see bars, streets, and stadiums; and I see cars on the highway and planes in the sky. And I wonder about the peoples’ lives.

How many want something more? How many go to church, but sit quietly in their pews, have given up on reaching their neighbors, and simply work their jobs and go home to watch television? They don’t go beyond their own lives and their families.

9651016263?profile=original

But in faith I see something more—I see city-wide pray-ers. Even if they don’t yet see themselves that way. But that’s why I see it in faith. Faith enables us to believe while we wait for the reality to manifest.

Now imagine identifying the spiritual strongholds of a city, say loneliness or poverty. According to Ed Silvoso in That None Shall Perish, a spiritual stronghold is “a mind-set impregnated with hopelessness that causes us to accept as unchangeable, situations that we know are contrary to the Will of God.” Strongholds are spiritual in origin but have natural consequences. A stronghold of loneliness might cause binge drinking or sexual promiscuity, for example.

When individual pray-ers in a city learn their best prayer types and begin to practice them with authority, they grow in their walk with God. Not only that, they begin to talk with God about their neighbors and begin walking through open doors to minister to them. But not only that, when people join prayers for the city, they confront strongholds with great force and agreement and reestablish the city on God.

People from all over the city come together, praying in their particular voices. There are thanksgiving pray-ers and warfare pray-ers and intercessors. The Bible is prayed and so is praise and also confession, all united in agreement prayer. This is a true concert of prayer!

Before they learned their prayer types, they never saw themselves as city pray-ers. They were living their solitary lives in boredom and frustration, wanting to be part of something more but not knowing how or what. But now they take their place in bringing God’s kingdom to the city. And when the city is changed, the nation can be changed and the ends of the earth. How does this happen? By one prayer at a time, and one person at a time.

City-wide prayer is strengthened and widened when individual pray-ers find their best prayer types and join them on behalf of the city.

It may be by faith, but when I look across the city, I see the people of God, a spiritual house, a royal priesthood. I see prayers on their hearts, waiting to be prayed. I see angels at attention, waiting to be dispatched. I see miracles on hold, waiting to be performed. They’re all across the city, just waiting to be released.

They’re waiting for the ones who were sent to become the ones they are.

PRAYING ON A MISSION

What do you have to do that wastes your time and strains your patience? Can you pray in that time? For 40+ years I have enjoyed shopping with my wife. I like being with her. However, we made a compromise early on. I would walk along behind her with a book. I used the time well, and she could ask, if she wanted my advice. "Do the pink look better than the blue?" Of course I occasionally got lost from her. When I discovered that had happened, I would go to the cash registers and wait. Several times over the years we had a church member say someone had told them, "I think I saw your pastor in such-and-such store this week. He was reading a book!"

It may be a little late to keep people from thinking me nuts, but I have discovered that I can pray for people in the store. Today we went to Wal-Mart. I left my book in the car and entered the store on a mission. I couldn't help wondering what God was preparing to do as I prayed for nearly a hundred people up and down the aisles.

Where could you be praying? I once heard a pastor tell about using time stuck in traffic to pray for people who were in the hospital. I have read about a wife praying for her husband as she ironed his shirts. You could memorize a list of missionaries, countries or people groups, lost friends or family members to pray for in the dentist's office or wherever. You can even get excited about what great thing God is preparing to do because He gave you a special time to pray.

The Mistake Pastors Make About Prayer

I’ve been around churches, ministries, and Christian conferences for most of my life, and I’ve had many awesome leaders in that time. One quality was pretty consistent among my leaders—dedication to prayer. They wanted to pray and they wanted us to pray. For that, I’m grateful.

However, there’s one fundamental mistake many of them made about prayer—they challenged us to pray without training us how to pray. And during certain seasons, they called us to pray even more, but didn’t help us to pray more.

The teaching about why we should pray wasn’t met with teaching about how to pray. We tackled the “why” of prayer without tackling the “how” of prayer.

9651017854?profile=original

This is like telling your sixteen year-old daughter, “Just drive more” instead of first teaching her how to drive.

She won’t become a lifetime driver without instruction. Your teen doesn’t primarily need to hear all the good and sensible reasons why driving is a good idea—she needs to learn how to drive, and let that experience teach her why.

One day Jesus was praying while his disciples were nearby. When Jesus finished, one of them said, “LORD, teach us to pray.”

So Jesus began to teach them, “When you pray, say…” (Luke 11)

Did Jesus start with why they should pray? No, Jesus began with how to pray. The disciples had been around Jesus long enough to know that prayer was important, and at a disciple’s request, Jesus taught them how to pray.

Yes, we need a theology of prayer that emphasizes why we pray. But often leaders fall short in raising up praying people because they set a vision for prayer without setting a school for prayer. They challenge without equipping, they tell instead of train.

So when it comes to prayer, most leaders concentrate on the why and neglect thehow, then they wonder why more people don’t attend their prayer meetings. But it’s time the how of prayer takes its place beside the why of prayer.

If you’re a pastor, I encourage you to put prayer training in place. I guarantee it’ll enhance the life of your church or ministry. If you’re part of a church or ministry, start requesting prayer training or seek your own out. If we approached the how of prayer, I think we’d all be grateful.

12 Different Types of Prayer

When I discovered different ways to pray, I was really excited. Prayer had become stale and stagnant to me, an obligation not an inspiration.

This discovery opened up the heavens. I don’t know if I so much found them as they found me. They were in the Bible the entire time. I just needed eyes to see them.

What does this mean?

  • There are lots of possibilities for prayer.
  • We don’t have to pray like other people.
  • We can find the prayer types that work best for us.
  • We can pray our own prayers.

This is what I saw.

When you read the letters of the apostle Paul, you see that he’s exceedingly thankful. Time and again, Paul begins his letters with thanksgiving:

  • “I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you” (Romans 1:8).
  • “I always thank God for you” (1 Corinthians 1:4).
  • “I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers” (Ephesians 1:16).

Of the thirteen letters that are normally attributed to Paul, he’s thankful in ten of them. But if you read other biblical writers, they don’t sound the same.

Instead of thanks, David offers praise:

  • “O LORD, our LORD, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens” (Psalm 8:1).
  • “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge” (Psalm 18:2).
  • “Praise the LORD, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits” (Psalm 103:1–2).

And instead of offering praise, Joshua prays God’s Word. His instructions for bringing the Israelites to the Promised Land were,

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you maybe be careful to do everything written in it.” (Joshua 1:8)

And with these new eyes, I saw 12 different types of prayer.

Praying with Your Feet

This past weekend, I had the privilege of prayer walking the grounds of some local schools with area residents, ministry leaders, students, and even an alumnus of the schools!  While many simply consider the concept of prayer walking (walking while praying) or praying on site, just another way that one can pray, I can tell you that people participating left excited, enthused, and invigorated!  Yes, invigorated.  That's a word I seldom, if ever, see paired with the word, prayer.

Here are just a few things that people shared following walking the grounds in prayer.

* "Prayer Really Works!"  That's a fairly easy idea to intellectually agree with, but when those in attendance heard reports of specific ways God answered specific things he had people praying during last year's prayer walk, everyone was encouraged and energized to continue praying- during and even long after the formal prayer walk concluded!

* "I now have new ideas and ways to pray for students, teachers, administrators, and supporting staff on these campuses.  God has revealed to me people and matters affecting students here that I can pray about every time I drive past this place."

* "I've never thought about praying on site at the schools before.  God brought so many different ideas to my mind to pray about while I was here today.  It wasn't until I followed Him here that He brought these to light.  I can't wait to do something like this here again!"

Blessed Are Your Feet

Romans 10:15b- As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” (NIV)

Paul's words are associated with missions outreach and the sharing of the gospel of Jesus Christ.  But let's also remember that prayer is an active, ongoing, aspect of missions and the gospel going forth into the world!  Without prayer, the gospel often falls upon deaf ears or hardened hearts.  With prayer, eyes are opened, ears unstopped, and hearts softened to salvation through Jesus Christ.

Prayer walking, and praying on site, as mentioned above, is often used by God to reveal new people to pray for and circumstances to engage in prayer.

We walk and travel many places each day.  A key difference between walking and prayer walking is whether one's heart and mind are engaged with God or not.  Much of our time and our daily movements can be infused with prayerful conversation with God.  If that's a new concept, or if it seems difficult to implement, ask God to help you turn your thoughts to Him- or to help you see others, or circumstances you encounter, with His eyes, heart, or mind.  He'll be happy to help you see and experience things His way, and then help tune your heart to pray accordingly.

By doing these kind of things (seeking to see and experience people and matters through God's eyes, heart, and mind), we become missionaries actively engaged right where we are!  God blesses our feet as we walk, drive, and move about- and He does so as a result of aligning our hearts, minds, and other senses with His!

Praying for Missionaries

For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. - Ephesians 1:15-17

We may not actively consider ourselves missionaries- especially if we're not formally serving with a church denomination, ministry, etc.  But by praying on site, and by prayer walking, we can personally take an active role in missions each and every day; right where we are!

As Paul wrote to the Ephesians (noted above), we can pray for one another to receive the Spirit of wisdom and revelation- so that we may know Him better (and while doing so, also help others know Him better as well).  This mindset of prayer can help us pray for missionaries near and far- including ourselves and every other Christ follower around us.  This kind of missions mindset (beginning with prayer in knowing God better) is a powerful way to glorify God and seek His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10)!

Carrying Prayer Everywhere

As we've seen, prayer can easily be carried everywhere.  Whether one uses their feet, a motorized vehicle, or some other method of transportation, the key is our focus upon God, His heart, mind, and will- moment-by-moment.

This moment, I encourage you to pause and ask God to reveal to you something around you He sees that you might be missing.  Ask Him if there's a way He'd have you pray about what He's revealed to you.  Then, if He does, pray accordingly.  It's a model you can apply to and throughout your day- wherever you are, wherever you go, or around whomever you meet.

Let's pray with our feet today!

 Starting a prayer movement

The first step is to pray. In Luke 10:2, the Lord invites us to pray and ask for laborers into the Harvest field. Seek Him to identify other prayer laborers in the community.

Secondly, look for where God is already at work. Identify existing prayer groups and networks that are already praying for the city. Explore the different types of prayer meetings that are going on in the community, how long they've been praying together and past attempts they've made to try to pray together with other groups.

Thirdly, identify any unresolved issues that might keep the community from praying together in humility and unity. Prayerfully seek reconciliation and possibly work together to resolve any problems.

Fourthly, call a community wide prayer gathering for the current leaders and intercessors within the community to meet one another and simply to pray together.

Discern together what the next steps should be for your community. Some cities will decide that the Pastors should meet weekly for prayer. Some will want an annual city prayer and worship gathering. Some cities start a 24/7 House of Prayer. Some communities start prayer walking troubled areas of their city.

Seek out resources that will help foster the prayer movement in your community and share them with those who are interested.

Pray Together

Discover God’s DNA for Your Community

Connect through Prayer

In working together to disciple teenagers, prayer is your foundation and source of strength. Your relationship with God fills you with His love, which overflows into the lives of those you are reaching. As you connect with Him you are more prepared to connect with others. Prayer is the vital communication we have with Him.

Ask God for His Vision

God knows how He wants to mobilize a movement in your area to reach and empower every teenager. Why not allow Him to orchestrate the movement? Ask God to give you His vision and heart for your community.

Establish a Foundation of Prayer

Building a local movement means making prayer intentional. With whom can you pray and who will pray for you? Here are some ideas:

+ Make prayer a consistent part of your network meeting.

+ Meet regularly in smaller prayer groups.

+ Take one or more days to have a group prayer summit.

+ Enlist the local Moms in Prayer Intl. group to pray for your network and the schools you want to reach.

+ Set up an online social networking group to share requests. (On www.youthworkers.net you can set up your network and share private posts with your group’s members)

3D Prayer

Prayer can be multidirectional for your community. New England regional coordinator Mark Orr gives this great reminder to hit three levels as you pray:

+ Pray Up: Establish the vertical relationship with God through praise and thanksgiving.

+ Pray Across: Intercede for one another regularly and at gatherings.

+ Pray Out: Listen to God as He reveals your community’s needs and resources for teenagers.

Prioritizing Prayer

In our network one leader served at a small church that had a prayer garden and we met there. Our prayers were about seeking His will, lifting up our kids, and our community.

As we prayed, I saw us mature with cohesiveness and intimacy among us. Then we were prepared to truly help.

--Venetia Yates, Network Coordinator Bosque Farms, New Mexico

Pray Together Interactive

Connect through Prayer

How is your soul today? How can prayer help you in working together to transform teenagers into disciple makers?

Ask God for His Vision

Take some time to pray right now. How do you sense God is moving in the lives of teenagers in your community? When can you schedule some more time to get away, asking God what He has to say about reaching and equipping youth in your community?

Establishing Your Foundation

Who would be willing to pray for the youth of your community? As you read “Establish a Foundation of Prayer” on page 4, which ideas resonate with you? What action points can you set to get people praying together?

A Way to Pray Through Scripture

One way to teach and encourage prayer is to model it for others.  It's not done with a mindset of, "Hey, look at what I can do," but is done out of a humble desire to love and encourage others to pray and practice a similar manner of prayer within their own devotions and ongoing personal relationships with God through Jesus Christ.

Some ways to begin this practice of prayer include:

*  Prayerfully ask the Holy Spirit to bring your attention to specific points or details as you read.

*  Read through the chapter, or section of Scripture, two or more times.  You may want to jot down specific points, ideas, or concepts that the Holy Spirit points out as you read (even ones that may seem unrelated to the text as they come to mind).

*  Ask the Holy Spirit to help you pray through the Scripture the final time you read through it.  Then begin praying through as you read.

*  Ask the Holy Spirit to show you opportunities to pray with prayers of praise, thanksgiving, confession, petition (asking), and more.

Today, we read Hebrews 5.

Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is subject to weakness. This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people. And no one takes this honor on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was.

In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him,

“You are my Son; today I have become your Father.”

And he says in another place, “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”

During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.

Warning Against Falling Away

We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.

My prayer today:

Father, I praise you for being God of all.  In your many perfections, you display your perfect wisdom.  You watch and engage your creation and call forth your children to come before you in prayer.  Thank you for calling each Christian man, woman, and child to pray!  Although we no longer sacrifice animals to atone for our sins, we do offer you a sacrifice of praise, for you are worthy to receive it always, in all places, and times.  I worship you alone.  Thank you, Jesus, for being the perfect sacrifice for all my sins, past, present, and future.  You alone are worthy and capable!

I confess that I seldom deal gently with those ignorant or who are going astray.  I have established a pattern of quickly judging others in my heart and impatiently relegating them as a waste of my time.  I am weak, as they are, but fail to invite you to do what pleases you within me or through me.  Lord, forgive me for my arrogance and pride.  Renew my mind and heart by your Word and Spirit.  I long to obey and follow you humbly.  I desire to humbly lead and help others to know you, and know you deeply.

Jesus, I thank you for refusing to take glory in yourself or in the power you received from the Father.  You perfectly glorified your Father, and He did mighty things through you.  Help me to do the same; to look to the Father- to bring Him glory in all He does in and through me; taking none for it for myself.  Thank you, Father, for calling me one of your many children.  Oh, how I long for your glory to be reflected from me toward you and others!  Guide me by your Word and Spirit accordingly!

Father, I also confess that the words, obedience, and suffering, are not popular words in our time.  But Jesus, I praise you for living, and modeling, the importance of obedience following suffering.  You've promised that we will suffer for our faith in you.  Help me to hold my focus on you in times of suffering, as well as during times when it seems I'm not suffering.  I desire to follow you, and all you perfectly modeled during your physical time on earth.  You are my Rock, my Source, my Strength, regardless of circumstance!

Lord, I desire to consume the appropriate food within the teaching of your Word.  Please reveal to me what to read, learn, take to heart, apply, and more in this latest step in my walk with you.  I ask that you would do similar for my brothers and sisters in Christ.  Help us to accurately assess, and accept, where we are, regardless of how much or little of our lives we've walked with you.  We desire you, and to grow in you alone.  Teach us to pray, and lead us in your way everlasting.

Father, I continue to exalt you above all; all that could distract me from your presence or attention; all that would seek to tear me away from you.  And as I exalt you, I desire that many more would join in doing so.  You are perpetually worthy to be exalted; lifted up in our hearts and lives, in our countenance, in the outward living of our moment-to-moment lives, and more.  Equip us to humbly yield to you in all manners of our lives.

I worship you alone.  In Jesus' name, Amen.

--
What you've read is a model of how it's possible to pray a portion of Scripture.  It's an excellent way to read, pray, and grow in your study of the Word and your personal walk with God.

You may find that when you pray Hebrews 5 (or any portion of Scripture) on your own, that your prayer and praise may look much different than mine.  Guess what?  It probably will, and in my opinion, it should!  Your relationship with God is different from mine, and any other Christian's!   Talk to God with your own voice and heart.  He made them, gave them to you, and desires your praise, thanksgiving, worship, petition, and more through all He's given you.

This is also true if you practice praying Scripture with a spouse or friend.  Scripture is an excellent foundation to pray from- whether individually, with a spouse, or together as a family!

Attempt this form of prayer once or more this week, and let me know your impressions.

Also, if there's a portion of Scripture you'd like to see modeled in prayer, or would like to model in prayer yourself, please email me.

Thank you for reading the Word, and praying today!

Father,

You are God of all (1).

I confess that I often approach both You, and Your gift of prayer, with too small of a mindset.  Sometimes, I imagine the things I have the ability to accomplish or dream up, and then ask You to do only that much.  Yet, You're able to do immeasurably more, as Paul wrote in Ephesians 3 (2).  Other times, I only pray thinking of the things of which I want or desire.  While it's not wrong or bad to do so, I confess that I often forget or neglect to worship, praise, and thank You for who You are, what You've done, and are doing (3).  I often fail to pray for others' concerns, joys, and for the lost (4).  I confess that I mostly consider Your actions and provisions ahead of You, Yourself.  Forgive me and continue to grow my trust, joy, and understanding in/of You (5).

Thank You for Your grace, forgiveness, compassion, and care (6).  Thank You for giving Your Holy Spirit to dwell within me (7).  Change my thinking, understanding, compassion for others, and more (8).  Continue to fill me with Your Spirit, that I may see others, and their situations, through Your eyes (9); that I may hear what they say, and don't say, accurately, as with Your ears (10); and that I may read, take to heart, and apply what Your Word says (11).

Help me to pray from Your Word and heart (12); think Your thoughts; see myself, people around me, and our matters of agreement and disagreement accurately and lovingly as You do.  I am not capable of any of these things on my own.  I yield to You.  You're the Rock that I stand upon (13).  You are my Joy and Strength (14), (15).  You are the Light of my life in this dark world (16), (17).  You are the Lifter of my head when I become discouraged, distraught, and even self-centered (18).  You are the Corrector of my vision; helping me to see You, myself, people, and matters with far greater accuracy than I could ever imagine or attempt to understand on my own (19).

You are Lord of All.  Some try to convince me and others that You are not Lord at all (20).  Help me to love and pray for them with Your perfect love, compassion, and care.  Also, quicken the hearts and minds of other Christians to meet these people where they're at, to pray for them, and with them as Your Spirit leads and prompts.  Increase my sensitivity to Your Holy Spirit's promptings.  I desire to be obedient to bring You, and Your Name, glory; fulfilling things You've prepared for me to do since before You created time (21).

I worry not about what's to come because You are there (22), (23).  I worry not about the things of the past: for You are my perfect Redeemer (24) (25).  I worry not about the present (26), because You are near, and Your Spirit and Word are guiding, sharpening, correcting, and renewing me; providing light to my feet and a lamp for the path before me (27).

I worship You, Jesus; Lord of All.  Nothing is too great or small; for You created and care for it all.  Continue to shepherd me through this day and night ahead (28) for Your glory alone.  In Jesus' name, and in increasing and endless praise, (29) Amen.

Happy Birthday, America

On July 4, you celebrate Independence Day in the USA. Many men and women have fought for the freedoms we enjoy as we celebrate the birthday of our nation. Take time to thank God, for the freedom

9651015888?profile=originalwe still have in this country to worship God.

We often get discouraged with some of the things we see happening in our county, Take the time to share with your grandchildren how blest we are to live in America or the country you live in.

As we celebrate July 4 in America, let's remember those who fought and died for our freedom, We also need to take time to pray for those currently serving in the military and their spouses, sons, daughters, parents, grandparents and extended family members.

Don't forget to pray for your national leaders. Regardless of whether we agree with their policies, we have a biblical mandate to pray for them.

Pray for Truth to Prevail and Lies to be Exposed in our media and our governments at the local, state, national and world level.

If you live in America have a wonderful day celebrating America's birthday.

PRAYING ON VACATION

I am continuing to pray for Pray Network. I hope God leads Navigators to continue this ministry. And I want to thank Him and them every day that it continues.

My blog this week is about praying on vacation. Many of us have taken prayer retreats that were glorious. But I am thinking about something much more difficult. I want to talk about praying on a family or recreational vacation.

So many things contrive to disrupt our prayer lives when we go on vacation. I am on vacation visiting relatives as I write this. And my my prayer times have hardly been complete a single day. The first problem is simply in the purpose and preoccupation of vacation. We are usually focused on recreation. Also the rhythm of our routines are broken. We have to catch the ferry at 4:00 A.M. Or we sleep in until 10:30. And we have to coordinate our schedule with family, extended family and others. If you have ever been on vacation, you know several more things that interrupt regular prayer.

What do you do about it? The very best thing I have ever heard about was done by my close friend and associate. From the time his children were small he planned devotions into their vacations months in advance. He prepared a fun personal devotional guide for each member of the family that went together with what they were going to do each day. I'm sure there was a time he faced the natural and spiritual opposition of instituting this program. But the children grew to be excited about this aspect of their vacation. And they treasure those devotional guides well into adulthood. I suspect this would be too difficult or impossible for most of us. But I wanted to plant the idea for some of you to think about.

A similar and less involved tactic might be simply planning a specific time for personal prayer and devotions for each day and talk with the family about the next day's prayer time.

I also think it worthwhile to continually remind yourself to pray for each family member and every other person you see or come in contact with through each day.

The most important thing you can do is pray about it in advance and during your vacation. If you read my blog at all you know that I believe the most important thing you can do to develop an extraordinary prayer life is to pray and keep praying for God to help you do it. Pray for God to keep you in communication with Him every day of your trip. I think you will find nothing brings more joy to a good time than prayer.

Who prays for YOUR backyard?

"Who prays for YOUR backyard?"

As our prayer team disembarked the plane that brought us home to DFW from a Washington, DC prayer assignment a few years ago, I heard this question from the Holy Spirit. I asked "what?" "You heard me, WHO prays for YOUR backyard?" My first thought was "this is a trick question Lord." Then He showed me that often, as intercessors, the headlines catch our attention and that is where much of our prayers are targeted, and it is often national and international items we cover in prayer. And those are important too.
But I took His point well realizing it did not cross my mind until a crisis happens to pray over our home state.

What if we gave our state the same prayer opportunity once in a while in that we place ourselves before the Lord to wait on Him for our state, it's leaders, those who govern over us from the city dog catcher to the governor and all offices in between. The people of our state, including those all important "Josephs" that live here, but do international and Kingdom work in the public arena given by God for His use?

1) Take time to go to your state capital and pray on site with insight. It is my opinion that the local church cannot bear the prayer burden of the state capital by themselves....we need to manup and do our part !! Prayerwalk the grounds of your capital, for not only the elected officials and their staff, but all the troopers who keep it secure, the other clerks and staff that make your capital operate smoothly.
2) Is there legislation pending that will make life better or more difficult for it's citizens? Don't know? Find out !! And I have found God has His agenda of what needs to take place....maybe there is legislation we need to pray in to existence !! Get lists of all the elected officials at the state level and pray regularly for them including state and district courts.. Put a map of your state in your tool box for prayer and regularly pull it out to pray for it.
3) You know the state and city laws/services effect our daily life a lot more directly than even the national ones...things like our streets paved & highways built/repaired,public school quality, sales & property taxes, all those things that come out of the state capital and our local city hall efforts.

Consider what your influence for prayer for your state might be, whether in your local church or city prayer group, and get started with it. Invite others and spread the word !!

That we join Heaven in agreeing our city and state will collectively achieve it's destiny from God and fulfill it's Kingdom purposes. Unique in it's giftings and resources, YOUR state is called of Him for such a time as this !!

Blessings,
Pat
