WHY HAVING MORE CHRISTIANS WILL NOT NECESSARILY CHANGE OUR CULTURE

Source: by Os Hillman, Author and President of Marketplace Leaders

William Wilberforce was a British politician and philanthropist who lived in the late 1700s and was a leader of the movement to abolish the slave trade. For centuries, Christians thought culture would change if we just had a majority of Christians in the culture. That has proven to be a false assumption. Culture is defined by a relatively small number of change agents who operate at the top of cultural spheres or societal mountains. It takes less than 3-5% of those operating at the top of a cultural mountain to actually shift the values represented on that mountain.

This is exactly what the homosexual rights movement have done through the "mountains" of media and arts and entertainment. They have strategically used these avenues to promote their cause and reframe the argument. They are gradually legitimizing their cause through these two cultural mountains through a small percentage of people operating at the top of the media and arts and entertainment mountains. Mountains are controlled by a small percentage of leaders and networks. James Hunter, in a book entitled How to  Change the World, highlights what sociologist Randall Collins says about civilizations in his book The Sociology of Philosophies.

According to Collins, civilizations have been defined by a very small percentage of cultural philosophers who influence seven gates and supporting networks since our birth as a civilization. Hunter summarizes, "Even if we add the minor figures in all of the networks and civilizations, the total is only 2,700. Between 150 and 3,000 people (of the roughly 23 billion people living between 600 B.C. and A.D. 1900) framed the major world civilizations. Clearly, the transformations here were top-down." What an amazing piece of information.  Culture has been defined since the beginning of time by no more than 3,000 change agents, a tiny fraction of the population.

That is why we must realize that making more converts will not necessarily change culture. It is important to have conversions, but it is more important to have those who are converted operate at the tops of the cultural mountains from a biblical worldview. Those at the tops of these mountains are expressing their liberal worldview through these cultural spheres. The more godly the change agent at the top, the more righteous the culture will be. The more ungodly, the more liberal we will become. It doesn't matter if the majority of the culture is made up of Christians. It only matters who has the greatest influence over that cultural mountain.

"When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when a wicked man rules, the people groan" (Prov. 29:2). For the last several decades, culture has become increasingly secular and liberal in the United States. But God has always raised up His change agents to represent His interests and agenda on Planet Earth. God is raising up His change agents for such a time as this. We know that Jesus will return for a bride, that "He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish" (Eph. 5:27).

So, despite the trends we may see, I believe we need to operate from a victorious eschatological viewpoint. God's current activity in the marketplace is part of this. He is calling us in His church to "love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our mind" (Matt. 22:37). This means applying God's mind to the natural order expressed through the cultural mountains of society. Changing culture rarely happens without the cooperation of other like-minded change agents pooling their resources and influence capital to make change.

William Wilberforce was a British politician and philanthropist who lived in the late 1700s and was a leader of the movement to abolish the slave trade. A native of Hull, Yorkshire, he began his political career in 1780 and became the independent member of Parliament for Yorkshire (1784-1812). He was a close friend of Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger. In 1785, he underwent a conversion experience and became an evangelical Christian, resulting in changes to his lifestyle and his interest in reform. He was 28 years old at the time and wondered whether he could stay in politics and remain a follower of Jesus Christ.

His good friend John Newton, a converted slave trader and author of the famous hymn "Amazing Grace," convinced him to stay in politics to model his faith in the public sector. His life was subsequently dramatized in a movie production entitled Amazing Grace. In 1787, Wilberforce came in contact with Thomas Clarkson and a group of anti-slave-trade activists. These activists persuaded Wilberforce to take on the cause of abolition, and he soon became one of the leading English abolitionists, heading the parliamentary campaign against the British slave trade until the eventual passage of the Slave Trade Act in 1807.

Wilberforce was part of a small band of influential leaders in England called the Clapham Group. They were a small group of leaders operating in the governmental "mountain" of influence. Its members were chiefly prominent and wealthy evangelical Anglicans who shared common political views concerning the liberation of slaves, the abolition of the slave trade and the reform of the penal system. The group's name originated from Clapham, then a village south of London (today part of southwest London), where both Wilberforce and Thornton, the sect's two most influential leaders, resided and where many of the group's meetings were held.

They were supported by Beilby Porteus, bishop of London, who sympathized with many of their aims. After many decades of work both in British society and in Parliament, the group saw their efforts rewarded with the final passage of the Slave Trade Act in 1807, banning the trade throughout the British Empire and, after many further years of campaigning, the total emancipation of British slaves with the passing of the Slavery Abolition Act in 1833. They also campaigned vigorously for Britain to use its influence to eradicate slavery throughout the world.

It was not a large group. It consisted of less than 20 leaders. However, these leaders were passionate about their faith, their causes and their commitment to those causes. If we are going to have a positive influence in culture, we must rethink our strategy from "getting more people saved" to "getting more kingdom marketplace leaders operating in the places of influence." Both strategies are important, but cultural change will only happen when a small group of kingdom marketplace leaders operate at the top of these cultural mountains by solving societal problems and bringing a Christian worldview into their leadership.

Happy Birthday, America

Happy Birthday America

On July 4, you celebrate Independence Day. Many men and women have fought for the freedoms we enjoy as we celebrate the birthday of our nation. Take time to thank God, for the freedom we have in this country to worship God.

We often get discouraged with some of the things we see happening in our county, however, we know our heavenly Father is still in control. Take the time to share with our grandchildren how blest we are to live in America.

As we celebrate July 4, let's remember those who fought and died for our freedom, We also need to take time to pray for those currently serving in the military and their spouses, sons, daughters, parents, grandparents and extended family members. Don't forget to pray for our nationl leders. Regardless of whether we agree with our country’s policies, we have a biblical mandate to pray for them.

Pray for Truth to Prevail and Lies to be Exposed in our media and our governments at the local, state and national level.

Have a wonderful day celebrating America's birthday.

MALAYSIA: MOVE TO LEGALISE FORCED CONVERSION OF MINORS

by Elizabeth Kendal

In early 2009 there was an outcry in Malaysia after three children born to an Indian Hindu couple were converted to Islam by the father without the mother's consent after he converted to Islam. At that time, the Cabinet discussed the case and decided that the children of an estranged couple should remain in the 'common religion of the parents at the time of their marriage'. In Malaysia, Cabinet decisions are essentially unwritten laws that civil servants are obliged to implement. Despite the April 2009 Cabinet decision, Islamic officials have continued to convert minors at the request of one parent, without the consent of the other. For example, in April 2013 an estranged husband, who converted from Hinduism to Islam in prison, secretly took his two children aged 5 and 8 to an Islamic Centre where they were officially converted to Islam and given Islamic names. When their Hindu mother sought redress she was told that because her children were now Muslims she would have to go through the Sharia courts. Believing that to be futile and possibly even dangerous, in early June she opted instead to lodge a complaint with the police. This case triggered a fresh outcry when it was exposed in the media. [Note: in Islam, the Islamic State determines and manages a person's religion; it is not a matter of personal freedom.]

In Malaysian politics, a draft law or 'bill' is discussed and approved by the Cabinet before it is submitted to the Parliament. Yet on Wednesday 26 June a bill permitting the unilateral conversion of minors into Islam went to the Parliament without first going to the Cabinet. The bill would further Islamise Malaysian law. If passed, the Administration of the Religion of Islam (Federal Territories) Bill 2013 will replace the 1993 Act. This bill provides that a minor may be converted to Islam by 'his parent' (singular). The bill uses the same language as the Constitution which clarifies, however, that 'parent' may be interpreted as 'parents' where both parents are alive.

Because the bill bypassed the Cabinet it was introduced into Parliament without any scrutiny from the Cabinet's non-Muslim members, leaving non-Muslim MPs feeling betrayed and marginalised. Malaysia is 50 percent ethnic Malay and 60 percent Muslim, but a significant proportion of those Muslims would be nominal or secular. The government was wrong if it thought it could get passage of this bill by stealth, for the bill has caused an outcry, particularly amongst Malaysia's non-Muslims. Despite this, the government is standing firm. On 1 July Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin insisted that the bill would proceed despite it being contrary to the April 2009 Cabinet decision, maintaining it is based on the Constitution, court precedents and present realities.

The Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) has slammed the 'stealthy' tabling of the bill. As MCA vice president Gan Ping Sieu notes, 'It contains controversial provisions that affect the constitutional and religious rights of the non-Muslim. This will seriously and irredeemably affect the religious harmony and national unity of our country.' According to the Malaysian Bar Council President, Christopher Leong, the unilateral conversion of minors is unconstitutional. Roman Catholic Bishop Paul Tan Chee Ing comments: 'I understand this amendment contravenes a decision by the Cabinet announced on 23 April, 2009 that a single parent cannot convert a minor. If so, this would not be the first time that the Cabinet is overridden by civil service functionaries - the main drivers of creeping Islamisation in this country.'

It is not uncommon to find non-Muslims (including nominal and backsliding Christians) converting to Islam for personal gain: in particular, men convert to Islam so they can take another wife. If passed, this bill will legalise the forced conversion of non-Muslim children. As the bill states: 'From the moment of his conversion, a mualaf (convert) becomes subject to the same duties and obligations as any other Muslim.' For the sake of vulnerable children, we must pray against this bill.

'Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.' (Jesus: Matthew 19:14 ESV)

PLEASE PRAY SPECIFICALLY THAT -

* the Spirit of the Lord will arouse passionate indignation in all Malaysians who treasure personal liberty and the fundamental human rights of children, so that this bill will not pass and the loopholes will be tightened to protect vulnerable children from Islamic mischief.

* God will halt the Islamisation of Malaysia and that the Malaysian Church looks to the Lord of Hosts who has promised to be 'strength to those who turn back the battle at the gate' (from Isaiah 28:5,6 ESV).

* our faithful Lord Jesus Christ will establish justice for all Christian children and parents who have been robbed through Islamic mischief, not only in Malaysia, but in Egypt (where it is common) and throughout the Islamic world.

SUMMARY TO USE IN BULLETINS UNABLE TO RUN THE WHOLE ARTICLE:

MOVE TO LEGALISE FORCED CONVERSION OF MINORS IN MALAYSIA

On 26 June a bill that would further Islamise Malaysian law went to the parliament. It provides that a minor may be converted to Islam by 'his parent' (singular) without the consent of the other parent. Thus a parent who (for whatever reason of self-interest) has converted to Islam could get their children registered as Muslims. (Christian parents and children suffer this mischief throughout the Islamic world.) The government was wrong in thinking it could get the bill through by stealth as it has caused an outcry, particularly amongst non-Muslims. May the Malaysian Church, amidst all this, look to the Lord of Hosts to be her strength. Please pray against this bill, for the sake of Malaysia, its children, the Church and all others vulnerable in this situation.

http://www.grandparentingwithapurpose.comI am sure you have noticed that I have a passion for praying for my grandchildren in my writings in my blog and Face book postings. I recognize the critical moral and spiritual climate our grandchildren must navigate in a world hostile to truth. Our grandchildren are growing up in a world that is not friendly to our faith in God. However, I feel God has given grandparents a sacred trust and a responsibility to imprint the next generation with His faithfulness. That is why we at Christian Grandparenting are calling grandparents worldwide to unite in prayer on September 8, for a Grandparents Day of Prayer.

One of my favorite songs is "Find us Faithful" sung by Steve Green, who challenges us to leave footprints of God's faithfulness to those who come behind us. I hope you will listen to this song and find it thought provoking and challenge you to leave a legacy to your grandchildren.

As we witness prophetic events unfolding daily, we can attest without question, that the Church is in the last of the last days, the final hours before Christ returns for His spotless Bride. If there was ever a time when we, as Christians, need to safeguard our victory in Christ, it is today. The apostle Paul gives us the secret of securing our salvation in 1 Corinthians 9:27, “I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.”

The signs of the times are everywhere throughout the world—floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, wars, economic collapse, false prophets, terrorism—these global indicators are clear harbingers, signalling the end of the age. The spiritual battle is raging around us with greater intensity than ever. There is a great falling away, a spreading apostasy that is looming in the Church like dark clouds of deception as multitudes of careless, undiscerning christians succumb to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils that have infiltrated the House of God, openly defiling the Lord’s holy name and corrupting His Word. 1Timothy 4:1-2 heralds this sobering trumpet call- “Now the Spirit speaks expressly that in the latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons,  speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron”

This is not a warning for the next generation—no, we are the final generation that is witnessing these exact Bible prophecies coming to pass before our very eyes! God, in His mercy, continues to send us “wake up call” after “wake up call” to shock us out of our slumber. All of these “breaking news” stories are occurring at an alarming and unprecedented acceleration. This should drive us to work out our own salvation in fear and trembling and for that reason, I have compiled this list of ten basic rules to safeguard your victory over the devil, who still walks around as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Don’t get hung up over the word “rule” which simply means “explicit principles that govern conduct”. What I’m endeavouring to do as God’s watchman is assist you according to His Word as to how we are to conduct ourselves as overcomers in these last days of time. Some would call this list of ten rules legalism, but Jesus calls it freedom. “If you continue in My word, then are you My disciples indeed; and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31-32)  Here they are:

 1. SPEND TIME IN THE WORD DAILY- “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night” (Psalm 1:2)

 2. STAY ACTIVE IN PRAYER- “As for me, I will call upon God; and the LORD shall save me. Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.” (Psalm 55:16-17)

 3. STAY IN COMMUNION WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT- “This I say then, walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16)

 4. KEEP A GUARD OVER YOUR HEART- “Keep your heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” (Proverbs 4:23)

 5. LOVE YOUR ENEMIES-  “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you” (Mathew 5:44)

 6. FORGIVE OTHERS FOR ANY OFFENSE- “And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses” (Mark 11:25)

 7. STAY IN FELLOWSHIP WITH OTHER BELIEVERS- “Do not forsake the assembling of yourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhort one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching”  (Hebrews 10:25)

 8. TURN AWAY FROM YOUR SINS- “He who covers his sins will not prosper,
But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy”
(Proverbs 28:13)

9. GIVE THANKS IN ALL THINGS- “Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 5:20)

10. PROTECT YOUR FIRST LOVE- “I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent” (Revelation 2:4-5)

Ask the Holy Spirit to empower you daily to conduct your manner of living around these scriptural principles and then walk in your victorious freedom every day until Christ comes back for His overcoming Church! Sin shall not have dominion over you! God bless you!

Religious Liberty Prayer Bulletin | RLPB 216 | Wed 26 Jun 2013

by Elizabeth Kendal

WELCOME to the intercessors who have joined the list this month.

JUNE 2013 UPDATE - During June we prayed concerning . . .

* TURKEY (RLPB 213), which is polarising along secular versus Sunni fundamentalist lines.

UPDATE: Turks who are objecting against Prime Minister Erdogan's dictatorial rule, along with his re-Islamisation and re-Ottomanisation of Turkey, are continuing their protests despite mass arrests and heavy-handed police responses. At organised mass rallies, PM Erdogan has described the pro-religious-freedom, pro-secular demonstrators as terrorists and hooligans who are being manipulated by foreign forces in a conspiracy led by Western media. Above all, the demonstrators are being accused of offending Islam. Pray for Turkey, particularly that the Holy Spirit will guide the Church in holy wisdom.

* SYRIA (RLPB 214), where the Syrian Arab Army, with support from Hezballah, has liberated the strategic town of al-Qaisar from rebel control. The battle for Aleppo looms, with many difficulties (particularly that of maintaining supply). In battles between Hezballah and Sunni jihadists, local Christians may well find they are wedged between competing foreign Islamists, none of whom have any regard for Syrian Christians. Pray for the Church in Syria.

'Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by.' (Psalm 57:1 ESV)

UPDATE: According to Stratfor Intelligence (21 June), the head of Free Syrian Army (FSA), Salim Idriss, anticipates that US weapons will 'change the balance of power on the ground'. As noted in previous RLPBs, the FSA is a Muslim Brotherhood force that regards the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusrah Front as an ally. Furthermore, thousands of FSA soldiers are defecting to al-Nusrah each month. Imported weapons will not only further escalate and prolong the conflict, they will doubtless end up in the hands of al-Qaeda jihadists. Their agenda includes the total eradication of all traces of Christianity, the establishment of al-Qaeda bases and jihad against the West. Pray that God will intervene to advance his own glorious purposes. (Proverbs 19:21)

* PAPUA, INDONESIA (RLPB 215), where Javanese Muslim colonisation along with Islamisation and militarisation are slowly effecting the genocide of Papua's indigenous, mostly Protestant Christian Melanesians. Historically, Papua benefited from the coming of the earlier Western pioneer missionaries and nation-builders. Now the West is ignoring the plight of the Papuans - will it acknowledge its complicity in their genocide? (Proverbs 24:12)

JUNE 2013 ROUND-UP - also this month . . .

* CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC (CAR): THE LRA STRIKES (Updating RLPBs 210 and 211)

On 13 June a band of Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) fighters attacked two villages in Bria, a mining region in central CAR. Six local people were killed and ten wounded as the LRA went on a desperate looting spree. The villagers fought back, killing four LRA. The LRA responded by launching a fresh attack in which they killed six more villagers, putting their decapitated heads on display as a warning. Meanwhile, the Muslim rebel coalition (known as Seleka), which seized control of CAR in March, is barely holding together. The fighters - many of them foreigners - are protesting about their living conditions. Consequently, fighting could erupt within the rebel ranks. The security situation for CAR's mostly Christian population remains dire. Multitudes have been displaced. Food and medical supplies are in short supply. More than a million people are in need of aid, including some 595,000 children under the age of five years old. Pray for the Church in CAR.

* EGYPT: COPTIC CHRISTIAN TEACHER FINED FOR 'BLASPHEMY'

On 11 June the Luxor Misdemeanour Court found Demiana Abdel-Nour (23), a Coptic Christian school teacher, guilty of 'insulting Islam' and fined her 100,000 Egyptian pounds. Three parents had complained that Miss Abdel-Nour allegedly showed disgust when she spoke of Islam in a religion class. The accusation led to Miss Abdel-Nour's arrest and imprisonment, against which Amnesty International protested. Miss Abdel-Nour was later released on 20,000 Egyptian pounds bail, pending further investigations. The school and the Ministry of Education had both investigated and found her innocent. Despite this, the Luxor court deemed her guilty in a ruling that went partly towards appeasing the Islamist protesters who were seeking much severer punishment. This is the latest in a series of blasphemy charges to impact Egypt since the Muslim Brotherhood came to power. Pray for the Church in Egypt.

* KENYA: TERRORISM IN MOMBASA

Morning Star News reports that on 9 June assailants on a motorbike threw an explosive device into the Earthquake Miracle Ministries Church in Mrima village, in the coastal region of Mombasa. Fifteen worshippers were injured, many critically, including two pastors. Al-Shabaab militants from Somalia are suspects.

* NIGERIA: JIHAD CONTINUES

BORNO: On 13 June Boko Haram jihadists attacked four communities in Gwoza Hills, Borno. The jihadists descended on the villages with cries of 'Allahu Akbar' and torched four churches with explosives. They also stole grain and livestock. The militants seized Rev. Jacob Kwiza of COCIN (Church of Christ in Nigeria). Eye witnesses report that the militants slit his throat when he refused to renounce Christ and convert to Islam.

PLATEAU: Ethnic Fulani Muslims continue to attack villages in Wasa Local Government Area, south-east of Jos. In the latest attack, a Christian man was killed and four churches were torched on 18 June. Christian ministry is reported to be paralysed by the endless violence.

* SOMALIA: ANOTHER CONVERT EXECUTED

According to Morning Star News, al-Shabaab militants in Jamaame district, southern Somalia, had been monitoring Hassan Hurshe (28) since he returned with his family to Somalia from Kenya in 2010. Having concluded that Hassan had become a Christian, they seized him and executed him publicly in front of horrified onlookers. Hurshe had converted to Christianity in 2006, married in 2008 and fathered a baby boy in 2009. His family has since fled the area.

* TANZANIA: PASTORS ATTACKED IN GEITA

To ensure all meat sold in Tanzania is halal, only Muslims may be employed in the meat industry. Tensions are escalating, particularly in Geita in the north-west, as Christians resist both Islamisation and the Islamic monopoly. In February Pastor Mathayo Kachili of the Tanzania Assemblies of God Church was beheaded by Muslims rioting against Christians found slaughtering their own meat. [See RLM, 19 Feb 2013]. Furthermore, Tanzania's demographics are shifting: Tanzania may soon be majority Muslim, if it is not so already. In late May, attackers attempting to get to Pastor Daudi Nzumbi, who leads the Free Pentecostal Church of Tanzania congregation in Geita, were driven off by his large dogs. On 2 June a Muslim mob broke into the home of Pastor Robert Ngai, who leads the Evangelical Assemblies of God church in Geita. He is in intensive care with deep machete wounds. This was definitely attempted murder. Pray for the Church in Tanzania.

* VIETNAM: EVANGELICAL PASTOR'S MURDER WHITEWASHED AS SUICIDE

Hoang Van Ngai (38) was an ethnic Hmong elder of Bui Tre Church in the legally recognised Evangelical Church of Vietnam (South). Ngai was arrested on 15 March in Dak Glong district, Dak Nong Province, South Vietnam, along with his older brother, Hoang Van Pa, his wife and sister-in-law, without an arrest warrant. Hoang Van Pa says he could hear his brother screaming in pain as he was beaten and tortured through the night in the cell next door. By 17 March Hoang Van Ngai was dead. According to Hoang Van Pa, his brother was targeted because he had protested against corruption and abuses of power. Ngai refused to pay bribes, strenuously defending his church when the authorities demanded that he close it. As Morning Star News reported, the killing terrorised the Hmong community. When the Chairman of the People's Committee claimed that Ngai had killed himself, Ngai's family refused to accept it because Ngai's body was covered with evidence of torture and severe beatings. So the family submitted an urgent petition to the Dak Nong Chief of Police, contesting the claim. According to Christian Solidarity Worldwide (11 June), the authorities have now notified the family that their investigation shows Ngai did die from 'suicide by self-electrocution'. Religious liberty has declined markedly in Vietnam since its Communist Party realised it can persecute with impunity. Pray for the Church in Vietnam.

Dutch Sheets: Praying for America

Dutch Sheets: Praying for America

Praying For Our Nation
"Our message (to the world) should be of grace and truth," explains Dutch. This message however need not leave out the consequences of sin, but as it is shared, it must be laced with hope and mercy. Dutch reminds us that the heart of our message should be, Return to Me and I will return to you (Mal. 3:7).
And rather than have a harsh, judgmental attitude, we should have one of both compassion and mourning. We must be able to explain the results of sin through heartfelt tears. "Too often the world perceives our attitude toward the consequences of other's sins as callous or even smug gladness," cautions Dutch.
How can we effectively pray for the nation? Dutch says we should:
1. Pray that many in the church sense the need for humility and repentance
2. Pray that the church is able to respond to the national crisis with great wisdom
3. Ask for a turning of our nation back to God
4. Ask for God's mercy to triumph over judgment
5. Pray that our president and other government leaders move with great wisdom
6. Pray for comfort in our nation and that each person recognize his/her great spiritual need
7. Forgive those who have wronged us and pray for justice to evildoers.
8. Continue to pray for the salvation of the Muslim world.
Repentance Is A Process
Dutch reminds us that God wants to give witness to the world that Jesus is still alive today. "If we make the right decisions in this nation," says Dutch, "we will see a great return of the miraculous." God will work miracles in our homes, schools, offices and in the streets. He will set people free and deliver them. God has strategies for us to implement to turn this nation around. Anyone who is listening to hear a word from the Lord is in a position to reveal to us these strategies. When these plans are followed, they release an authority from the Lord that opens doors of breakthrough, revival and healing.
Dutch believes God is calling America back to Shechem, or the place of promise. "Shechem is the place where God first spoke to Abraham about giving him the land of Canaan," says Dutch. "God is asking America to partner with Him again, to agree with His purposes and reasons for establishing this nation." We need to come into full agreement with the biblical principles upon which America was founded. Dutch believes God is giving us an opportunity to rid our land of strongholds of idolatry, like materialism, pleasure, greed, lust and pride. "We must bury our idols and return to Him with all our hearts," says Dutch.
Though true repentance and turning bring forgiveness, Dutch says God's goal is much loftier than this. "He's shooting for transformation," says Dutch. The process of revival begins with the process of repentance. But one of the reasons we have difficulty finding repentance is that we don't know what we're looking for.
Dutch says, "It is essential that repentance be first worked through our lives in order for true revival to flow through us and impact the nation. "I refer to repentance as a process," says Dutch. "It usually comes over a period of time as we gradually are transformed into His way of thinking." There are signs of hope: the prayer movement, the men's movement, youth breakthroughs, renewal and unity. All these indicate that things are changing in our country. The process of repentance has begun the process of revival. "The river can and will flow in increasingly deeper levels if we cooperate with the Holy Spirit," says Dutch.    Source

5 Summer-Time Prayer Action Steps

•5 Summer-Time Prayer Action Steps
  1. Family Table ~ Ask every family to take at least one family meal each week to pray for their neighbors (who live nearby, people they work with, fellow students ...) AND to keep a log of the names and the needs the Lord leads them to pray for. During a Sunday morning service in August, ask families to  come prepared to share their prayers and God's responses.
  2. Church Picnic ~ before the festivities begin, ask every family to form a circle and to pray (facing inward) for the Church and then to pray (now facing outward (for the community)
  3. Weeknight Prayer Meeting ~ take the prayer time outside (if some cannot handle the walk or the heat, they may stay inside and pray) and use this as a template: Ask everyone to pray with their eyes open, looking at (and praying for):
    1. God's creation, then
    2. the church facilities, then
    3. north (is there a school north of the building?)
    4. south (business district?)
    5. east (hospital?
    6. west (homes?)
  4. Secret Saint ~ You've heard of Secret Santa? (you receive a gift but do not know who it is from) How about asking everyone in the congregation to become an in-secret intercessor? Assign everyone (include youth and older children) someone to pray for on a Sunday morning (a reverse offering; everyone picks a name as a basket is passed) then the following Sunday simply ask for testimonies of what is was like to pray once-a-day- for their person or anyone sensed a special blessing from the Lord because someone was praying for them.
  5. Pastoral Prayer ~ recruit someone to "pinch hit" for the pastor over the summer; encourage them to pray from their deepest passion.

New Covenant Praying By Eddie Smith

“God wants to perform in ways beyond our expectation. His desire is to respond ‘exceedingly above all that we can ask (pray) or think (imagine).' So, if we can imagine it, or ask it, it’s likely too small!”

bk_eddie_howtobeheard__59769.1315355561.1280.1280.jpg?width=150Picture Alice and I hope your summer 2013 has started smoothly and that it will hold many blessings for you and your family. We’re looking forward to some fun times with friends and family, woven into our work and ministry schedule. Summertime usually brings financial challenges to ministries as ours. Please pray with us that won’t be true this year.
Have you ever been told, or heard someone told, “You are never satisfied, are you?” Well, has it ever occurred to you that dissatisfaction with the status quo is a basis for petitionary prayer (intercession)?
You see, praying Christians like us will never be satisfied until God’s kingdom comes and His will is done on earth as it is being done in heaven. We continually live with a holy dissatisfaction with what exists, and are committed to, as Alice wrote last month, see it changed through prayer.
If this describes you, here are three tips that may help. In this letter, I’m offering more along the line of Alice’s excellent May letter.

  • Discern and accept the burdens of the Lord.  Perhaps one of the most difficult things for us to do today is to discern that for which we are to pray. Because of the Internet and other modern conveniences, we can be easily overwhelmed with requests and the needs around us. We must remember we aren’t primarily here to meet needs. We are here to engage with the Father in what He is doing. (Jn 5:19) What is the Father doing? What does He want to do?

We can only know this if our hearts are closely entwined with His. We can’t share the burdened heart of someone we hardly known. God, as a gentleman, will never force us to bear burdens unwillingly. Instead, He invites us to co-labor with him in His kingdom work. He is looking for co-laborers. (Isa 59:16) That’s why we describe His assignment as “the great CO-mission.” (Mt 28:19-20)
Notice the burdens we are called to bear are His burdens--“the burdens of the Lord.” True God-assigned prayer begins in the heart of God. When He deposits His burdens into our hearts, if we don’t understand what He’s doing; what we should do and how we should do it; we may easily miss the point. In fact, we are saddened to see how many of the Christians who are diagnosed as emotionally or mentally depressed are in reality experiencing the Father’s call to intercede. They neither know that what they sense is the burden of the Lord, nor how they should respond to His call to intercede. One of our mandates is to offer training resources. Once we discern and accept a burden from the Lord, we are to…

  • Identify with God’s desire to intervene in the matter. (2 Pet 3:9)  God shares His burden with us to orchestrate a “heavenly intervention.” Satan is at work today to destroy people, and to disrupt God’s plans on the earth. (Jn 10:10b) Much of what is happening around us today breaks the Father’s heart. His desire is to expose and defeat evil, and to extend mercy and grace. (Jas 2:13).

However in His plan, the Father has limited Himself to some degree by giving us responsibility for what happens here. (Gen 1:28; Psa 115:16) So mysteriously, He awaits our prayerful invitations to operate in the earth realm. As His kingly priests (Rev 5:10), if we are to see His activity here, we must discern and accept His burden and desire regarding the people, places and things around us; and invite Him to operate accordingly. Notice that Revelation 5:10 doesn’t suggest some of us are kings, and some are priests. All who are in Christ are kingly priests, or priestly kings (male or female). Remember, there is no “laity” in the body of Christ. All are ministers. (Eph 4:12)

  • Pray in faith for a breakthrough.  God wants to perform in ways beyond our expectation. His desire is to respond “exceedingly above all we can ask (pray) or think (imagine). So, if we can imagine it, or ask it, it’s likely too small! But there is a fight of faith in prayer.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if Jesus would ask the Father on our behalf? Great, perhaps, but that isn’t the way it works. Jesus said, “In that day...the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name…Ask and you will receive…you will ask, I’m not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf.” (Jn 16:23-26) So, to ask is clearly our responsibility.
IMPORTANT:  The following does not apply to what’s commonly referred to as the false teaching: “name it and claim it.” Remember our premise. We are praying according to the Father’s desire, His burden-- our heaven-given assignment. Got it? Great! Now hold on.
Do we really believe that He hears us when we ask in His name, according to His will? If so, then He commands us to consider it done. Amazing, isn’t it? He specifically says, “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it (already), and it will be yours.” (Mark 11:24) One of the most difficult verses of Scripture for us to believe is Mk 11:24, where Jesus said, “…whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have (already) received it, and it will be yours.”
There is clear evidence that we understand and practice prayer that is based on our belief that we have received that for which we are asking. What is the evidence? Paul said, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer…, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” If we truly believe we have received that for which we are asking our praying will be void of anxiety and filled with gratitude to the Father for His faithfulness.

What about perseverance? What about wrestling in prayer? There is perhaps no greater struggle, no greater spiritual warfare, than the battle against our fleshly minds, the faithless testimonies of others, and the contrary things that we see around us that say “your God doesn’t hear, and isn’t going to answer you.” Our fight of faith is to stand convinced that He already has heard us, and that we already have that for which we’ve prayed in His name, according to His will. He is the Only Faithful One!
If this lesson has blessed, enlightened or encouraged you, will you ask the Father how you can support the ministries of the U.S. Prayer Center? Thank you SO MUCH for standing with us financially this summer.

In His love,
Eddie and Alice

Harvest-Field Praying

I’ve often wondered what prompted the disciples of Jesus to ask Him to teach them to pray (Luke 11:1). Many things happened between their call to follow Him and their request to be taught prayer. According to Luke, just one chapter prior to their request, Jesus described the harvest as “great” and the laborers as “few” and then told them to pray (Luke 10:2). Since He was sending seventy of them into the harvest, two-by-two, they might have been surprised that prayer was included in His outreach strategy. They obviously understood the commands to go, to serve, to share, to minister, to teach, to preach, etc.? But the command to pray? This may have been the most confusing command of Jesus. Today, in many circles, it is the forgotten command of Jesus. I have heard, read and been a part of the planning of more outreach strategies than I can remember. Those saturated with prayer were in the minority. It must have thrilled Jesus to be asked about prayer, on the heels of His command to go to the harvest field. It would no doubt, thrill Him today, if we made prayer more a part of our harvest-field strategy.

Did you know that there are now an estimated 6 to 8 million Muslims who are our neighbors, 9651009662?profile=originalliving here in the USA? Regardless of how this might make you feel, we know our call in Christ is to love our neighbors which is why we must pray for them. Did you know that many Muslims are spiritual seekers who want to know spiritual truth? Most Muslims are not opposed to the Gospel, they just haven't heard it presented - not once or in a way that makes sense to them. That is why we must pray for them. There is no better season to pray for Muslims then during Ramadan which in 2013 is July 9th to August 7th.

But how do we pray for Muslims? Ethnic Embrace USA, a partnership of Mission America Coalition and Ethnic American Network, was launched to provide resources for the Church to help pray informed cross-culturally for the many people groups who now call the USA home. For Ramadan, visit www.EthnicEmbraceUSA.net to download a 30 day Ramadan Prayer calendar representing the 30 largest Muslim people groups in the USA. PAPUA (INDONESIA): FROM MISSION FIELD TO KILLING FIELD

by Elizabeth Kendal

In the 1950s, missionaries working with Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) USA and Australia brought the Gospel to the central highlands of the then Dutch New Guinea (the western part of the island of New Guinea). Since then, Indonesia has invaded, occupied, annexed, Islamised, militarised and colonised the region. Today, the indigenous, predominantly Christian Melanesians of Papua are a suffering and dying people. Like so many persecuted minorities in strategic 'swing' states, Papuans find their appalling plight being covered up and whitewashed by powerful forces engaged in 'realpolitik', the amoral politics of money and power. As long as Indonesia is a geo-strategically important nation, it will not be in any government's 'interests' to do anything for the Papuans. However, our God is a God 'who pleads the cause of his people' and acts! (See Isaiah 51:21-23; Proverbs 22:22,23; and Lamentations 3:55-58).

Selpius Bobii is the General Chairperson of Front Pepera (The United Front for the Struggle of the People of Papua). He is a political prisoner, one of the 'Jayapura Five' arrested in the violent military crackdown on the Third Papuan People's Congress in October 2011 (see RLPB 131, 26 Oct 2011). According to Bobii, 'The main means of annihilation are overt and covert military operations carried out by the Republic of Indonesia.' The extreme ethnic and religious hatred that many Javanese Muslim soldiers have for tribal Melanesian Christians fuels the most appalling human rights abuses. On the Internet, there is video of Indonesian soldiers torturing and brutally killing Papuans they abuse as 'kaffir' (infidels). Furthermore, the introduction of strong alcohol, worm-infested pork, AIDS-infected prostitutes and compulsory 'family planning' are all hastening the decline of the dispirited, indigenous population. On top of all this, Indonesia's policy of transmigration (encouraging Javanese Muslims to settle in the Christian regions of eastern Indonesia) ensures the indigenous Papuans' demographic demise. As Bobii notes, researchers at both Yale University, USA, and Sydney University, Australia, have concluded that what is happening in Papua is genocide. [For details see the RLM archive, label 'Papua'.]

On 21 February 2013, after Indonesia refused to heed community appeals and stop building military outposts on a sacred burial site, Papua independence guerrilla fighters took up arms and resisted. Eight Indonesian Special Forces (Kopassus) soldiers and four non-Papuan civilians were killed in the clash. Thousands of Indonesian security forces subsequently flooded in to 'sweep' the communities around Puncak Jaya in the western central highlands. By 26 February at least 18 houses and five GIDI churches [Evangelical Church of Indonesia], two schools and a library in Tingginambut had been razed by the combined police and military forces. Thousands of Papuan civilians have fled into the bush. Evidence is emerging of massacres. Dozens of Papuan civilians are reported to have been plucked from their homes, schools, gardens and churches to be raped, tortured, mutilated, dismembered and decapitated. Despite photographic evidence, the Indonesian government is dismissing the reports of killings and disappearances as 'rumours' and propaganda. Yet according to credible reports (27 May), at least 41 Papuan civilians are dead with some 30 missing. Six of the dead were village chiefs and social leaders (including at least one pastor) who had been invited to attend the 9 April inauguration of new Papua Governor Lukas Enembe in Jayapura. They were intercepted, tortured and killed while returning home.

Oxford-based exile and activist, Benny Wenda, laments international ignorance. 'For the last 50 years we have struggled for freedom but nobody knows that West Papua is a prison, that we are slaves to the Indonesian military and that at least 500,000 men and women have been killed in a genocide,' he told the Daily Telegraph (12 June 2013). Papuan Church leaders are deeply concerned about the escalating state violence. [The RLPB blog has a link to the Wenda video interview.]

PLEASE PRAY SPECIFICALLY THAT -

* the Holy Spirit of God will revive and keep the Papuan Church from losing faith; may they call out to 'God who pleads the cause of his people' (from Isaiah 51:22 ESV). 'The Lord is my portion,' says my soul, 'therefore I will hope in him.' (Lamentations 3:24 ESV)

* the King of kings - who sees all, hears all and knows all - will take up the cause of his people and bring justice, liberty and peace to Papua. (See Isaiah 59:14-19.)

* the Lord of Hosts will intervene against those who have cruel intent; by frustrating their schemes (Psalm 141:10; 146:9) and by visiting them with transforming amazing grace (Galatians 1:23).

SUMMARY TO USE IN BULLETINS UNABLE TO RUN THE WHOLE ARTICLE

PAPUA (INDONESIA) - FROM MISSION FIELD TO KILLING FIELD

Mission Aviation Fellowship opened up the central highlands of former Dutch New Guinea (later Irian Jaya / Papua) to pioneering missionaries in the 1950s. Since the 1960s, Indonesia has invaded, occupied, annexed, Islamised, militarised and colonised the region. Today the predominantly Christian indigenous Melanesians are a suffering and dying people desperately needing God's intervention to prevent genocide. In the latest military operation, thousands of Indonesian forces have been 'sweeping' Pancuk Jaya in the western central highlands, razing homes, schools, churches and gardens while torturing, mutilating and killing Papuan civilians. As of 27 May, 41 people are reported dead and some 30 missing. Thousands have fled into the bush. The Indonesian government is dismissing the reports as 'rumour' and propaganda. Please pray for the gravely threatened Papuan Church.

Mystics in an Age of Metadata

On the surface, it would seem that God’s words in Hosea 4:6 are no longer true. Can we really say today that people are “destroyed for lack of knowledge”?

Let’s take a closer look…

At first glance, it might seem that the very opposite of Hosea 4:6 is true today. Instead of being destroyed because of our LACK of knowledge, our culture is literally drowning in it. We’ve even had to coin an entirely new term for this: “metadata,” which Wikipedia defines as “data about data.”

In the 21st century, it’s no longer good enough to have data or knowledge. We’ve gotten to the point where we must have data about data and knowledge about knowledge. (Note: In our Narcissistic Age, even the data has become narcissistic, in love with itself!)

In previous centuries, humankind mined precious commodities like diamonds or gold, but now our focus is on mining precious data instead. And make no mistake about it, it’s not just someone else’s data—it’s YOUR data!

Not content to follow obvious data like the clear warning signs leading up to the Boston bombings or Fort Hood massacre, the National Security Agency (NSA) is collecting the phone records and other information about millions of Americans (yes, YOUR records). Have you seen the pictures of NSA’s huge new $2 billion data storage center in Utah?

When our Founders attempted in the Fourth Amendment to guarantee that all citizens would be “secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures,” could they ever have envisioned what we face today?

Don’t be paranoid, but you really are under surveillance. Yet what did you expect? Did you really think you would find any privacy in the Age of Google, Facebook, and Verizon?

Yes, our world is drowning in knowledge, the kind of knowledge clearly predicted in Daniel 12:4 regarding the End Times:   I bet you never realized that metadata is one of the prophetic signposts of the Last Days.

In contrast with metadata, Hosea 4:6 is referring to an entirely different kind of knowledge. The NLT translation catches this well: “My people are being destroyed because they don't know ME. That’s the kind of knowledge we need above all, but it’s increasingly hard to find today.

You see, when you’re drowning in metadata, it’s not easy to have an intimate relationship with the true and living God. You may get a cell call, text message, or email right when you are starting to pray and experience His presence. So let’s be honest: God’s “still small voice” is just too difficult to hear unless we consciously unplug from the world and periodically get away to a solitary place.

Mystics are hard to find in an Age of Metadata. But shouldn’t we take steps in that direction in order to draw near to God amid our noisy world?

A Steadfast Spirit in Prayer

"In warfare and seasons of trouble, there is a quality of suffering and perseverance that actually births in us a greater anointing to work the works of God. God actually trusts us because He trusts what He sees of suffering inside our heart and life. We cannot build anything without suffering... Good leadership knows how to suffer; they know about patience and perseverance to stand their ground."

God is looking throughout the earth, and He sees those who are steadfast in spirit. Is your spirit steadfast even during times of intense spiritual warfare? Do you know how to stand steady in hard times even when the enemy targets you with lies? Are you standing your ground in your thought life, and are you bringing your thoughts captive to Christ?

It’s not easy to navigate through life with all the uncertainties facing us. We go through times of job promotions and losses, prosperity and adversity, love and loneliness. We must learn to be very careful in our walk through life. I remember when I was simply walking with my husband and looking at the beauty of nature when suddenly I stepped on a small round chestnut, lost my balance, and fell on the ground. A little shaken and with a few scrapes and bruises, he helped me up. We carefully continued walking steadfastly forward. Little round chestnuts were all over the road. Almost as if they were dangerous landminds, I gingerly stepped around them as we proceeded on our walk. That day I learned a lesson about walking steadfastly.

How do we navigate through such constant change and intense warfare in our thoughts? How do we navigate around the landmines in life? It seems that our inner resolve must be strong. A fixed heart in prayer positions us, strengthening us from within to receive God’s power moment-by-moment and day-by-day. God wants us to stand firm by taking our thoughts captive through prayer. Obviously while walking I wasn’t standing firm. And what happened? I fell! But I got up quickly and proceeded on, being much more careful.

Even if we have made a great fall, we can get up and get moving again. But we need to be careful of the landmines. They can be negative thoughts about God, about ourselves, and about others that especially tempt us during a difficult time. Strongholds are powerful. But God will help us to be steady if we resolve to be faithful and steadfast in spirit and in prayer. He will renew a steadfast spirit within us. King David prayed for a steadfast spirit and wrote in Psalm 51:10:

"Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me."

My husband put many new windows in our house. Windows are important. This life is a small window of opportunity to stand fast in prayer, to choose to love God with all our heart, and to believe His truth in the midst of difficult circumstances. God sees whatever suffering each one of us has to go through in this life. Suffering and perseverance is an important part of life. When we face suffering, there is a powerful anointing for fellowship with God. He is inviting us to draw nearer to His heart through it.

One of the books I am presently writing is called The Invitation. God is inviting us into a glorious place of power and relationship, but it’s up to us. Will we accept His invitation? Will we be steadfast in seeking Him? Will we cling to His truth and His Word? We all love to be invited to special events by important people. This invitation is the greatest invitation any of us will ever receive in this life.

The challenge for us is to love God and believe Him through everything that comes our way. This is where we will find His strength and grace to carry us through. King David was a man after God’s heart who constantly pursued Him. A steadfast heart knows how to take thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ. We have a window of opportunity right now to pursue God. David declared in Psalm 108:1, “My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing and make music with all my soul.”

I have noticed in my life that after I have gone through an especially enduring season of warfare, God brings a breakthrough and increases the anointing in my own personal life. I look back and see the grace of God that carried me through. The battle has to do most often with taking thoughts captive in prayer and believing God for breakthrough. Satan does not like prayer. Standing strong in perseverance is a daily task, but God’s grace has been sufficient. If you are involved in prayer, I am sure you can identify. Battles make us strong, firm, and steadfast. We read this in 1 Peter 5:10:

“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.”

The Call for a Steadfast Spirit

“Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying your decrees!” (Psalm 119:5)

Let’s never think that we are the only one going through warfare and needing a breakthrough. All of God’s people who have been used by Him have come face-to-face in confrontation and warfare in the area of taking thoughts captive through prayer. Everyone has had to learn to be steadfast. It’s inevitable.

The famous revivalist, John Wesley, was steadfast in difficulty. Imagine the thoughts that the enemy must have shot into his mind when he was facing rejection and defeat. You probably never knew this about his life. Look at the breakthrough he experienced when he had a steadfast, persevering spirit and continued to trust God. A page from his diary reads as follows:

  • Sunday morning, May 5 - Preached in St. Ann's, was asked not to come back anymore.
  • Sunday p.m., May 5 - Preached at St. John's, deacons said, "Get out and stay out."
  • Sunday a.m., May 12 - Preached at St. Jude's, can't go back there either.
  • Sunday p.m., May 12 - Preached at St. George's, kicked out again.
  • Sunday a.m., May 19 - Preached, deacons called special meeting and said I couldn't return.
  • Sunday p.m., May 19 - Preached on the street, kicked off the street.
  • Sunday a.m., May 26 - Preached in meadow, chased out of meadow as a bull was turned loose during the services.
  • Sunday a.m., June 2 - Preached out at the edge of town, kicked off the highway.
  • Sunday p.m., June 2 - Afternoon service, preached in a pasture, 10,000 people came to hear me.

Wouldn’t you have felt like giving up if you were John Wesley? Look at what God did through His life because he persevered!

All inventors have to be extremely steadfast. Thomas Edison who invented the light bulb said, “Genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration.” Did you know that the first electric light was so dim that a candle was needed to see its socket? Wilbur and Orville Wright’s first airplane flight lasted only twelve seconds. One of the first steamboats took 32 hours to go from New York to Albany, a distance of 150 miles. The first automobile traveled two to four miles per hour and broke down often. But look at what these inventions can do today. These inventors had to believe in breakthrough in the face of great endurance and difficulty.

Perhaps you are going through a challenging time when the devil is relentlessly attacking your mind. You know that you need to be steadfast and persevering, but it’s difficult. The enemy tells you, “You’re a failure. You’ll never make it. You might as well give up.” These are merely lies and the strongholds of the enemy. The warfare seems intense, and you need a breakthrough that only God can give.

Realize that you are not alone. There is a battlefield of the mind. Many of us are facing a battle one way or another. We need a steadfast and persevering spirit in intense warfare. We need to believe God’s truth rather than the enemy’s lies. What should we do in times of warfare? Here are a few suggestions:

  • Put on worship music, sing to the Lord, and praise Him in the midst of difficulty. This will touch your spirit and impact your emotions (Ephesians 5:19-20). Listen to peaceful, quiet worship music. If you are getting fearful over situations in your personal life, the economy, weather conditions, or terrorism, this is an incredible way to stay in God’s peace in the midst of battle.

  • Speak God’s Word over your personal difficulties. Speak God’s Word over your life and the lives of those around you. Speak God’s Word over your nation. You are aligning your heart with God’s heart as you speak it out loud.

You may feel the intensity of spiritual warfare. It may be hard to hold steady in prayer. Landmines are going off all around you. Negative thoughts are trying to invade your mind. God is inviting you into deeper intimacy by teaching you to take your thoughts captive through prayer. He wants to strengthen your arms in war. Don’t give up. Persevere in prayer. Your breakthrough may be right around the corner.

Be steadfast in spirit as you face the battlefield of the mind. He will keep you in perfect peace as you take your thoughts captive through prayer. God will help you step around those land mines safely and victoriously when you trust in Him (Isaiah 26:3).

"There is an anointing for fellowship with God in confrontation that births a bestowing of Kingdom in our hearts. Kingdom is given to us in the violence of confrontation. The Kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force (see Matthew 11:12). We need a godly violence in our hearts that says, “We are not going to be moved; this is what we believe in. We are going to stand here; we are not moving. We are standing here, and we are believing God.”

A few years ago, I found a letter my great-grandfather, a preacher in Poland had written to his son, my grandfather after my grandfather had immigrated to America. In the letter, he wrote that he was praying for his son, my grandfather, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and future generations.

It blessed my heart to see in writing that my great-grandfather had prayed for me before I was born. His prayers had a ripple effect on my grandparents, my parents, my life, my children, my grandchildren and my future generations.

Grandparents Role

The role of godly grandparents is to communicate their faith in Jesus Christ and pray diligently for their grandchildren. However, if you did not have the privilege of growing up with a Christian heritage you have the opportunity start the ripple effect for your future generations.

We read in Matthew 6:19.20, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” I think my children and grandchildren are my treasures.

We may not have wealth to pass on to our children, grandchildren, and future descendents. However, author Jennifer Kennedy Dean shares in her book, The Legacy of Prayer about a Spiritual Trust Fund that will only increase in value.

  • We can leave behind for our descendants a spiritual trust that can never be stolen, squandered, or lost.
  • We can lay up a storehouse of imperishable wealth by praying for our grandchildren and future generations.
  • Our prayers are deposits in their spiritual trust fund and will be for withdrawals when needed. ¹

Our descendents do not inherit salvation. Nevertheless, we can pray our descendants will live in a constant awareness of God’s presence and be firmly established in His Word. Praying their hearts will be prepared for when presented with an opportunity to step into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Our families need material things, but those things are only temporary. Prayer is the greatest gift we can give our family and will affect many generations.

THE BATTLE FOR ALEPPO, SYRIA

SYRIA: THE BATTLE FOR ALEPPO

by Elizabeth Kendal

The Iranian-backed, Lebanese Shi'ite terrorist organisation, Hezballah, has officially entered the Syrian conflict. In a televised speech on 25 May, Hezballah leader Hassan Nasrallah wooed Sunni Arabs by provocatively, strategically and typically framing the conflict as a struggle between the 'Western Zionist agenda' and the Syrian 'resistance' that refuses to accept the West's dictates. According to this framework - which emphasises geo-politics over sectarianism - Saudi Arabia and Qatar have been drawn into a US-NATO-Israel axis plot, rather than the US and NATO being drawn into a Saudi-Qatar-Sunni Arab axis plot. The difference is subtle but critical, aimed at encouraging Sunni Arabs to reject sectarianism and join the 'resistance'.

On 5 June the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), supported by Hezballah, liberated the strategic city of Qusair which lies close to the border with Lebanon, in Syria's central province of Homs. Under rebel control for over a year Qusair had been home to 30,000 residents, including some 3,000 Christians. Today the city is a ghost-town, utterly ruined. Homes have been reduced to rubble while churches and monasteries have been desecrated, vandalised, looted and defaced with sectarian slogans. Qusair is integral to maintaining supplies. 'We've cut a major umbilical cord of the opposition,' boasted Homs governor, Ahmad Munir Mohammad, a Sunni Muslim and government loyalist. According to General Yahya Suleiman (SAA), 'Whoever controls Qusair controls the centre of the country, and whoever controls the centre of the country controls all of Syria.'

The battle now moves to Aleppo, a city of nearly three million people, including a sizeable Christian minority and with large Armenian and Greek communities. The battle for Aleppo has been deadlocked for close to 12 months. Christians have suffered immense hardship due to the rebel blockade of government-held areas - food, medicines and fuel are all scarce and costly. Leaving the house is fraught with risk. On Sunday 9 June foreign jihadists in Aleppo executed a boy whom they accused of blasphemy. Mohammad Qatta (15), a coffee-seller, had refused to give a 'customer' a free coffee, reportedly saying, 'Even if Muhammad comes down, I will not give it as [a] debt.' After beating and lashing the boy for hours, the rebels returned him to the street where they executed him in front of a crowd that included his distraught parents. Since the beginning of May, some 3000 Free Syrian Army fighters have defected to the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusrah Front which is leading an alliance of local and foreign jihadist groups and has raised its black flag in Aleppo's Tariq al-Bab neighbourhood. According to fresh data compiled by Western-sponsored activists and organisations and relayed to NATO, the jihadist ascendency has led many Sunnis to abandon the rebellion. According to the data, 70 percent of Syrians now support the Assad regime, 20 percent are maintaining neutrality while only 10 percent are still expressing support for the rebels.

More than 4000 Hezballah fighters are reportedly in Aleppo to support the SAA. Their first aim will be the lifting of rebel-imposed sieges. The battle for Aleppo will be a protracted house to house conflict with many casualties. In Lebanon, the largest Christian party (the Free Patriotic Movement) is in a formal alliance with Hezballah. Theoretically therefore, it should be in Hezballah's interests to respect the lives and rights of Syrian Christians. However, the reality is that the ever-pragmatic Hezballah has no love for Christians but exploits them as vote cattle and human shields. Hezballah's participation could well help end the conflict's stalemate by tipping the balance of power in favour of the Syrian government. But whenever victory comes through the assistance of foreign armies, sovereignty suffers. For Syrian Christians there will be no 'good' outcome in the short to medium term: only terrible (genocide at the hands of Sunni jihadists) or less terrible (domination by the clerical regime in Tehran and terrorist Hezballah). However, as the enduring, 'plodding', pioneer missionary William Carey noted: 'The future is as bright as the promises of God.'

PLEASE PRAY SPECIFICALLY THAT -

* Syrian Christians will look to the Lord, particularly the many thousands of Christian families besieged in Aleppo; may the Holy Spirit draw them close to their Almighty Father and remind them of the love of Christ, comforting, encouraging and fortifying them in their faith for the extremely testing times ahead.

'Therefore [because our struggle is not against flesh and blood (v12)] take up the whole armour of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. . . . In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one' (Ephesians 6:13,16 ESV).

* as the decisive battle for Aleppo takes its course, God will shelter and preserve all his precious faithful people, whether they are displaced, hunkered down in their homes or being held captive by rebels.

'Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by. I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfils his purpose for me. He will send from heaven and save me; he will put to shame him who tramples on me. God will send out his steadfast love and his faithfulness!' (Psalm 57:1-3 ESV)

* God in his great mercy and grace will intervene in Syria to advance his purposes for the sake of the Church and glory of his Holy Name.
