PRAYER ALERT: The State Department ordered as of August 4 that 22 US embassies close in mostly Muslim-dominated nations. They include Iraq, Egypt, Libya, Yemen, and Saudia Arabia. The State Department also sent out an extraordinary global travel alert. It warned US citizens of al Qaeda threats of terrorist attacks from August 4 through August 31. (It so happens that August 4 is the Night of Power when Muslims are praying to djinn spirits to empower attacks against US agencies and interests worldwide). According to US intelligence officials, these drastic alerts and measures were based on electronic messages they had intercepted from senior al Qaeda operatives. Many say that the widely-criticized NSA cyber-spying campaign is needed to ferret out such secret terrorist exchanges.

But there is no secret about the al Qaeda threats. On July 30 al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri posted on jihadist forums a call for attacks on US interests worldwide. He urged fellow militants to retaliate against American military actions in Muslim nations. In the same way, on the eve of 9/11 last year, Zawahiri posted a video calling for attacks on US facilities throughout the Muslim world, especially in Libya.

The next day an armed mob attacked the US Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. The militants, with the cooperation of al Qaeda operatives, set the building afire, killing Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other US diplomats. On the same day radical Muslims attacked the US embassy in Cairo, Egypt. They replaced the American flag with the black al Qaeda flag. In the next three days militant Muslims staged anti-American protests in 17 other nations from the U.K to Australia. Did US embassies close then? The chant heard around the world was “Obama, Obama, there are still a million Osamas.” Yet since this rash of attacks President Obama has claimed dozens of times that al Qaeda threats are declining.

Why does the US need such vast NSA secret intelligence when it is not intelligently using the data that it has? Al Qaeda openly displays how its global strength is growing. Last summer the leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq posted online its new priority of freeing its comrades in prison. This strategy has now come to light suddenly between July 22 and July 30. In that short span, according to Business Insider, “we have 500 senior Al Qaeda leaders escape during two assaults on prisons in Iraq, more than 1,000 in a prison assault in Libya [in Benghazi itself], and another 250 in a particularly nasty Taliban assault on a Pakistani prison.“*

Al Qaeda threats of terrorist campaigns are constantly proclaimed on Internet, in mosques and in public speeches. For months before the Arab Spring rebellions began, they were openly advocated by the Muslim Brotherhood and other Muslim groups. And US officials in Benghazi were warning the Obama administration about Al Qaeda threats of an imminent attack months before it occurred. But their pleas for help fell on deaf ears. We must pray that US leaders—and the NSA—begin to hear the obvious instead of prying so indiscriminately into the obscure.

PRAY WITH US: Father God, You are Lord of the heavens. You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. You have seen the US embassies close, but You are not shaken. We pray to You on behalf of US citizens and all non-Muslims traveling or living in Muslim-dominated lands. Protect them, Lord. In many of these places, meeting and evangelizing and even speaking in Your name is forbidden. Now moving and traveling by any non-Muslim is threatened. Even Muslims themselves are victims of militant violence.

But where US agencies are in retreat, and US embassies close, we ask that You arise. Be enthroned in the praises of your persecuted remnant in these nations. Be exalted in their prayers and ours. Let God arise. Let His enemies be scattered. Show that there is no God but You, and no Savior but Jesus Christ. Cause their prayers to Allah and djinn spirits to come to naught. Cause the Night of Power to pass powerlessly. Throw all their plans of attacks into confusion. But bring clarity to the leaders of free nations. Let every real alarm sound in a way that they can hear. Expose the real enemy, so excessive spying on the innocent will be abandoned. And raise the standard of freedom before the enemy’s flood. Pour greater waves of Your Spirit out as we pray. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. Release the captives of Islam, and show them that it is the Son of God who sets them free. In Jesus’ name, amen.

34 Days till National Grandparents' Day

9651009897?profile=original Will you stand in the GAP with prayer for your grandchildren?

Grandparents are encouraged for a special time of prayer for their grandchildren on the National Grandparents Day on September 8. Will you unite with grandparents worldwide to make this a special Day of Prayer?

As the moral and spiritual climate in our world is eroding, it is becoming more difficult for our grandchildren to grow up in a Christ-like environment.

Fighting the opposition with our prayers for the ongoing guidance and spiritual growth of our grandchildren takes daily discipline. To pray effectively, we need to know their frustrations, dreams, fears, concerns, and expectations. Now and then, we need to ask them, “What is going on in your life right now? How can I pray for you?” We also need to ask their parents how we can specifically pray for them, especially the younger ones.

To fight for our families as Nehemiah told the Israelites to do, ¹ we have to pray intentionally and regularly. According to God’s Word, praying for our children and grandchildren should be a high priority for us. Not all prayers are going to be answered immediately or even in our lifetimes. However, God will acknowledge our intercessory prayers and answer them at just the right time.

A Function of God’s Family Which Relates to Prayer

A Study of the Words ‘Plead’ and ‘Cause’ in Psalms 119:154

“Plead my cause, and deliver me...”

Written by Lewis Turner, Wheatland Ministries

The use of the words ‘Plead’ and ‘Cause’ in Psalms 119:154 are significant in that they speak of a function that the Psalmist asked the Lord to do for him.  An examination of the words above and related scriptures will help us further understand a significant function which relate to intercession and agreement.

To start this study, we will be closely looking at the Hebrew spelling of the two words, Plead and Cause, and deriving possible meanings of the words from the Hebrew letters used in the spelling.  Hebrew letters do have a meaning for each letter.  The Hebrew spelling for both words ‘plead’ and ‘cause’ in Psalms 119 verse 154 shows that the spelling appears to be the same. Looking at the Hebrew letters for these words we have:  רִיב.  An examination of the meanings of the letters of Hebrew for ‘Plead’ and ‘Cause’ reveals some interesting observations.  The first letter, Reish רִ, in the word refers to the Head/most important Person.  The 2nd letter, Yud י, in the word, means a deed done. The 3rd letter in the word רִיב is the letter Bet ב.  Its meaning implies a house.   (The meanings of the letters are listed in the reference A below)  Putting all this together, you might conclude that the word could mean:  the work done of the House of the Head/Highest Person.   Other meanings derived from the letters are possible, but in the context of this verse, this definition seems to be the best.

Examining the meaning that we have developed of רִיב —using the meaning of the letters, we find that they refer to the work of the House of the Head/Highest Person.  The Head/Highest person referred to in the context of the verse is the Lord.  Speaking of a House of the Head/Highest Person also seems to refer a family.  Looking further at the definition, we find that it speaks of the work done of the house.  This work may be what the Psalmist desired of the Lord when he asked the Lord to ‘plead his cause’.  A work of this nature could be considered a function of the House of our Lord.

Let’s look this concept further.   In Psalms 119: 154, I believe the Psalmist was referring to the Lord, whom he directed his words in seeking help.   This seeking of the Lord’s help, reminds us of  Romans 8:26-27 and 34, where we find that both the Holy Spirit of God making intercession for us according to the Will of God and in verse 34 we also find that the Lord Jesus making intercession for us.  The word for Intercession in Hebrew is  פָּגַע‎,  which in the context of making intercession, and using the meanings of the Hebrew letters to help define the word, we have the following possible definition—To  speak, lifting up, of the desire of the righteous. (see Reference B below).  The statement in Romans 8:26-27 and 34 is a powerful statement.  Considering that and looking back to the verse in Psalms 119:154, the work of pleading one’s cause especially when it is a righteous cause, is a function of God’s family.  Both the Holy Spirit of God and Jesus make intercession for us.

The principle of the desire of the Righteous is also seen in I John 5:14 “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to His Will, he heareth us :”  When we pray and ask for something in accordance with God’s Will, God hears us.  The Bible is God’s Word revealed to us and represents His Will.  When Christ was on earth, He provided a way that we could be right with God.  Bringing this together, a function of God’s family is to pray pleading our cause and focus on what the Will of the Righteous One is.

At this point since both the Holy Spirit of God and Jesus are making intercession for us, we should also consider the scripture Matthew 18:19 which speaks of two being in agreement.  When both the Holy Spirit of God and Jesus make intercession for us, they are in agreement.  That verse says that what two ask in agreement, it is done.   They both intercede according to God’s Holy Word, and because what they ask in intercession for us in agreement, it is done!  That is an important fact to learn and remember.

Their example of pleading for us should encourage us to join together; seek what God wants; learn his word; use His Word in prayer; and pray with others who have their faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior. When we do this we are functioning as part of the family of the House of God.

Reflection questions:

The example we have in the document above should encourage us to join together with others in prayer.  What attitudes hold us back?

Many Intercessors pray alone, and there were times when Christ rose up early and prayed alone.  Is then there a case to pray with other?  Consider the study above and respond to this question:  should intercessors also seek time of prayer with others?  What about others?

What can happen if we pray together and in agreement with God’s Word?

The Last Lesson in Tithing!

I am paid monthly.  Last month, I was praying over my budget and tweaking it, attempting to make my income stretch to meet the many demands that supporting my mother and two children brings. We've had it tough this past year with income loss, household emergencies, and medical expenses.  I've been "robbing Peter to pay Paul" for some time now and Peter is losing patience!  This budget just wasn't working.  No matter what I cut, it would not be enough. I had doubt.

I am a big believer in the tithe and have seen many times that when I do not tithe, financial problems increase.  I always end up losing that money one way or another; never once have I withheld it (even partially) and ended up making headway overall.  Depite this, in my heart, I allowed doubt and fear to take hold and I delayed paying my tithe.  I left the budget unfinished and basically postponed the whole mess, frustrated and uncommitted.

Not deciding can be its own decision.  My doubt was evidence that I was relying on my own strength because if I were relying on The L-RD, what would I have to fear (doubt)?  He is all-sufficient and all things are in His hands. He tells us to test Him in the tithe.

That Shabbat, I did not pay.  Two days later, almost all of what I would have paid was demanded of me - without notice - in medical expenses. The money was gone. I no longer had the option of paying my tithe.  It was as if the enemy entered in through a weak spot in my shield and took the very thing I was so afraid to lose.  Scripture teaches us that what the evildoer fears will come upon him.  I am no more or less an "evildoer" than anyone and don't believe that Scripture calls Yeshua's followers "evildoers" - we are covered by His blood! - but in that moment, in that indecision, I was certainly not doing rightly!  G-d protects the righteous, not so that they can break the law, but so that they can be free to observe it in love, knowing their Savior!

This month, as I worked out that same budget with that same income and similar expenses, I came up short again.  I sought The L-RD in prayer: not for guidance.  He tells us to tithe, so that was not in question - why ask G-d if He wants us to do what He's clearly told us to do?  I sought Him for the faith to do what was right and the peace and trust in HIM to meet all my family's needs.

Before I could even go to assembly to pay the tithe - the day after I worked out this budget and prayed over the situation, in repentance for what I had done weeks before - I received two unexpected phone calls:

1) My former husband of 12 years ago called.  He has a job for the first time in 3 years.  He will have child support payments for me every week this month.

2) My former husband of 15 years ago called.  Yes, he is willing to take on more than 50% of our son's tuition for the upcoming school year (I had asked him about this a couple of weeks prior and he intially said he couldn't, but I know differently).

Those two items would not only cover that tithe (plus the tithe that the added income will generate), but covered it by about double, meaning that unexpected expenses this month will not force me into "the hole" to start next month. I've been able to help others who needed small helps, too.

G-d is good, all the time!  His Word is Truth!  He is faithful, just, and merciful.  He is our Good Father, El Shaddai, Protector, Redeemer, Sanctifier, Beloved!  He cares for us.  He is so wonderful!

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation: the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation."

2 Corinthians 5:17, 21).

Religious Liberty Prayer Bulletin | RLPB 221 | Wed 31 Jul 2013

by Elizabeth Kendal

For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. (2 Corinthians 10:3,4 ESV)

WELCOME to the intercessors who have joined the list this month.

JULY 2013 UPDATE - During July we prayed concerning . . .

* MALAYSIA (RLPB 217), where children were put at risk of forced conversion by a draft law that had been submitted directly to Parliament, by-passing the Cabinet where certainly it would have been rejected by non-Muslim members. Doubtless the government hoped it would be approved without scrutiny. PRAISE GOD, the plot failed and the ruling Barisan Nasional was forced to withdraw the Bill so it could be scrutinised by the Cabinet.

UPDATE: THE STRUGGLE FOR CHILDREN CONTINUES - On Thursday 25 July a Malaysian High Court quashed the religious conversion of three children who had been converted to Islam in a Sharia Court in 2009 by their convert father, in their absence and without the consent of their mother. Justice Lee Swee Seng declared the religious conversions 'unlawful' and 'unconstitutional'. But the four-year legal battle is still not over. The husband, K Patmanathan (now known as Mohammad Ridzuan Abdullah), will appeal the ruling (unless he is found to be in contempt of court). Pray that the court will uphold the rights of children not to be converted to Islam at the whim of a convert parent. [In Islam, conversion is a legal and not a spiritual matter.]

* EGYPT (RLPB 218), where the military had ousted Egypt's first democratically elected president, Mohamed Morsi, in a military coup staged under the cover of anti-Morsi protests. This triggered a violent backlash against anti-Morsi forces, particularly the Coptic Church.

UPDATE: The military is pursuing its own interests while deflecting blame onto anti-Morsi protesters. Recently they called for anti-Morsi forces to come out into the streets and provide the military with a mandate to crack down on 'terrorism', i.e., the Muslim Brotherhood. Now the military is using lethal force against Muslim Brotherhood protesters, claiming a mandate from the pro-secular forces. Is the military really trying to set Egypt on a path to civil war? Pray for the Church in Egypt.

* PAKISTAN (RLPB 219) where Muslims in the sectarian hot-spot of Gojra have accused Christians of sending blasphemous text messages by mobile phone. Instead of applying the law, the police and the court are only interested in appeasing belligerent Muslims and clerics. Pray for the Church in Pakistan.

* IRAN (RLPB 220), where persecution is continuing under the new president, Hassan Rouhani. This includes closing Farsi-speaking fellowships and the imprisonment of converts from Islam. Pray for Iran's Christian prisoners.

JULY 2013 ROUND-UP - also this month . . .

* CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC (CAR): 'DO NOT FORGET US'

A letter from a local believer in Bangui has been forwarded to RLPB. The writer describes the situation as like 'enduring Calvary', adding that it is only 'by the grace of God that we survive'. The picture is one of utter devastation, rampant hunger and widespread terror. 'From what we are currently experiencing we have the impression that it is Islam - at the expense of Christianity - that is in the process of settling in our secular country.' [The full text of the letter is on Religious Liberty Monitoring.] The Catholic Church's Peace and Justice Commission likewise laments the wanton destruction, rampant looting and extreme violence, stating: 'It seems Beelzebub, chief of all demons, now inhabits the hearts of certain daughters and sons of this country.' The Secretary-General of the Central African Republic's Catholic Bishops' Conference, Mgr Doumalo, told CatholicHerald.co.uk that Christians face continual danger and uncertainty. 'This is why we're asking the world not to forget us,' he said.

* ERITREA: SYSTEMATIC PERSECUTION OF PROTESTANT YOUTHS

In Eritrea, the law requires all citizens between the ages of 18 and 40 to perform national service, comprising 6 months' military training and 12 months' deployment. It is not uncommon for the deployment to be extended and for conscripts to be exploited as slave labour. Cruelty, including torture, is widespread. The 12 months' deployment can be on either military duties or some national development project. To address the problem of evasion, in 2003 the government ruled that the final year of secondary school be undertaken at the Sawa Military Training Camp (SMTC). Amnesty International reports that some of these students are under 18, with some as young as 15. A student must complete this military service to graduate. Every year reports emerge of Protestant Christian students suffering violent persecution in SMTC. On 25 July Morning Star News reported that 39 school students in SMTC had been excluded from graduation. They were being subjected to beatings and forced hard labour with insufficient food and water, as well as being threatened with prison, simply because they refuse to 'renounce Christ'. Pray for the Church in Eritrea, particularly for these youths.

* INDIA: AFGHAN CHURCH GROWS AMIDST STRUGGLES

Christian converts started fleeing Afghanistan around 2005 as the Taliban gained strength. In May 2009 a Kabul-based television network, Noorin TV, broadcast images taken of a worship and baptismal service in a Kabul secret house church. A member of the Afghan parliament subsequently called for apostates to be executed. An estimated 100 Afghan Christian converts fled to India in the following months. Afghan converts are still arriving in India, with some 40 up to July this year. The Afghan Church of New Delhi has from 200 to 250 Afghan converts, refugees who have fled religious persecution in Afghanistan. Whilst they are relatively safe now, as Afghans they suffer discrimination in Indian society and hostility from Afghan Muslims who despise them as apostates. Pray that God will bless, protect, provide for and build his Afghan Church in India.

* INDIA: PERSECUTION ESCALATING IN MADHYA PRADESH

Madhya Pradesh {in central India) is ruled by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). It has long had a law requiring that those who convert to anything other than Hinduism must notify the authorities. [Hindu nationalists do not regard conversion to Hinduism as conversion, but as 'homecoming' or reversion.] On 10 July the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly voted to increase the repression by passing a bill that requires converts and clergy to obtain permission from the authorities prior to conversion. An application form providing names of converts, as well as the date and venue of any conversion ceremony (baptism), must be submitted to the district magistrate one month prior to conversion. Once a request is submitted, the police may investigate. If the prospective converts are minors, women or members of Scheduled Castes / Scheduled Tribes (Dalits), the legislation stipulates a jail term of up to four years and/or a fine of up to 100,000 rupees (US$1,680). The law is unconstitutional, breaching the citizen's rights to privacy and freedom of religion. India's BJP-led states are enacting laws that are unconstitutional knowing the Federal Government is unwilling or unable to defend the constitutional rights of citizens. Pray for God's intervention in India.

RAMADAN commenced on 9 July and will run through to 7 August. Please pray for Muslims during Ramadan. For resources, visit http://www.30-days.net/

A 'Platform' on Our Knees

When I recently I hit 20,000 Twitter followers @BestBibleTweets, I started having eerie flashbacks of a conversation last year with a pastor friend named Steve. He had spent a considerable amount of time trying to build a social media “platform” to promote a book he had written. Some marketing guru apparently had told him that if he could gain 20,000 followers on Twitter, it would be a breeze to sell his book.

It took several years, but finally Steve achieved his Twitter goal and was ready to launch the book. He was so excited. Steve was convinced his book would sweep the country, if not the world.

Unfortunately, things didn’t work out so well. He had invested most of his life savings to design and print 10,000 books, figuring he could easily recoup his investment when the books sold.

But within four or five months of launching the book, reality was beginning to set in. Instead of selling thousands of books, he had sold only hundreds. And he found himself giving away many copies of the book for free to friends and relatives.

Steve was bewildered. He thought he had built a pretty impressive platform. But somehow the response from his Twitter followers and Facebook friends was lukewarm, at best.

Meanwhile, Steve had withdrawn from most of his pastoral responsibilities so he could go on the road and promote the book. He spoke at some churches, did some book signings, and even was interviewed on a few local radio programs. But despite these noble efforts, he still had over 9,000 books stored in his garage.

If you are looking for an easy moral to this story, I’m not sure I have one.

I’ve seen lots of disillusionment over the years from those who sought a higher platform. Some of these people seemed very well-intentioned, with a sincere passion to impact the world with their message. But in other cases, the message seemed to get buried amid narcissism and self-promotion.

I’m not against platforms. I’m glad to have an ever-growing tribe of followers on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. I want to get my messages to an ever-wider audience.

But I’m still wary of all of the social media hoopla. The Bible is clear that true promotion must come from the Lord, and nowhere else (Psalm 75:6-7). If you are trusting in something else or someone else to give you a platform, you’re likely to be greatly disappointed.

The more I walk with the Lord, the more it seems like the safest “platform” is the one closest to the ground—where we humble ourselves before others to serve them and wash their feet (John 13). And doesn’t this kind of face-to-face, hands-on, behind-the-scenes ministry bear greater fruit in the long run than any lofty type of platform?

When we stand before the judgment seat of Christ, will He really ask us how big our platform was? Or will He simply want to know whether we faithfully loved and served people with whatever platform we were given?

Despite the clear words of Jesus, it seems we’re still prone to seek the place of honor at the banqueting table instead of the place of service (Luke 14:7-11). Meanwhile, Jesus’ model of leadership was to build a platform to lift others higher, not ourselves.

Reflection on my time in Guatemala City, Mexico City, and my visit to MC prison...

by Brian Bakke

I was in  Guatemala City and Mexico City visiting pastors, ministries, and churches that are working with the homeless, addicted, sex trafficked, gang members, elites,  church planting, and visiting prisons with pastors who are working among the violent street gangs incarcerated within horrible conditions here in both cities.

I visited La Limondada, a huge sprawling slum that hugs a steep ravine in the middle of Guatemala City. The river is also the sewer for this slum and the way things are done there has made this stream the most polluted in all of Central America.  Each and every bathroom and kitchen have a pipe jutting out from the river side wall of each house that throws out all untreated raw waste all day and night. Plus families toss garbage bags and cans full of litter and waste over the bridge into the river all day. They cannot afford the $1 USD fee per family to pay for a garbage truck to come in and collect the garbage so they dump it overboard. Imagine a neighborhood the size of Shaw doing this out in the Tidal Basin each and every day for the past 20 years and you get the idea and a glimpse of the effects...

In this slum are two schools.  There are two because the river is a dividing line between the MS 13's and the 18's that claim their side of the stream.  Parents could not send their kids across gang lines because their kids would be chopped into pieces and the homes shot full of holes if they did.  Bullet holes are to be found on most of the houses as you walk down the steep steps in the heart of the neighborhood and when you walk through the narrow pathways that function as streets.

In these two schools, there are about 180 kids from 4-17 years old. MSF helped start the first school about 6 years ago.

And I visited the second newer school when it was just an empty building filled with trash.

Now the new school is booming and brightly painted and decorated by the kids.

It is a miracle.

I have been to this barrio 5 times now.

And when I walk through and go house to house with Tita, the woman who founded this ministry, it is like walking with someone who is a combination of Bono and Mother Teresa. She had to go into hiding a couple of days ago due to her ministry being awarded a large national grant - which put her face, name and ministry on the front pages of the newspapers here.  This led to extortion threats and death threats from the local Mara's who want payment or she and her boy will be killed.

Later on that same day I visited with a friend (former gang member and ex-con) who has a ministry team of ex gang bangers  going into the various prisons here.  He took me to visit his newest ministry location, a max sec prison housing 130 teens who are all MS 13 or 18.

On the way into this prison, my buddy asked me what I was going to share with the inmates during the sermon/teaching time. My friend has a great sense of humor and timing.  We had a great time.  A first for me was having armed guards in the doorway with tear gas guns.

I have been in rooms with machine guns pointed at me and the inmates, but not tear gas.  And as soon as the youth stepped out of the room we were using, the guards told the kids to pull of their shoes and socks and then searched them.  Then the youth were marched off to their cells. I had not seen that since I taught the art class in County Jail and 26th and Cal.

After this, I visited a ministry called Mi Casita.  This is a safe house for kids who were being raped, beaten and abused by their parents.  A good number of them used to live in La Limonada.  Now 18 of them live, play, pray, and worship together in a safe, beautiful and HUGE house filled with respect and love.

The highlight for me was when a 5 year old girl with a cute gap toothed smile asked me to push her in the swing, and demanded that as I pushed her, that I speak English to her. Within a couple of minutes the swing set was full of adorable kids all repeating my simple 4-5 word phrases:

Birdie birdie in the sky

I got doo doo in my eye

I'm a big boy I dont cry

I'm just glad cows don't fly

And other soon to be classics regarding such noble themes as washing hands in the toilet, putting food up your nose, and such.

I finally got 'busted' by one of the bilingual adults.  But the kids loved it as they were repeating each phrase I gave them.

This was so therapeutic for me as it brought out the small child in me that longs to play with other kids.

After a day of seeing such brokenness, it was a joy for me to be there, to eat supper with the kids (plantain and beans) and to hug and kiss these impossibly beautiful kids and let them know that Jesus really does love them.

The next several days, I had meetings with church planters at a conference with mission, ministry, denominational and seminary leaders from all over Latin America.

Then I had a very special trip in Guatemala City. I visited the national forensic institute.

Me and four others were greeted at the door by a lovely young woman in native dress

Led into the building past a wall of tiny baby sized caskets

Past stacks of cardboard boxes with numbers

Past the lab with technicians and scientists working on remains

We were told the following:

The institute opened before the cease fire in the late 90's

This center is one of 3 world wide that has the technology that can ID remains from bones that have been buried for more than 30 years

That the attack on the World Trade Center in NYC created new ID technologies that this and other centers now make use of

The director started at the center when she was 17 years old!

There are multiple teams of people doing either of three tasks:

interviewing witnesses to mass murders in various places around the nation

digging up the remains of mass graves across the nation

cleaning, numbering, x-raying, and reassembling remains here in the lab

The director was late because she thought we were supposed to meet at a city dig.

This is the first GC dig, which is now 30 years deep, a huge dig that is where the army dumped bodies

The center has reassembled more than 5,000 bodies so far

There were more than 200,000 people, mostly ignorant rural peasants that were massacred by the US sponsored government troops over the course of 30 years  of dirty civil wars in Guatemala

We went into the lab, which had about 10 people working

There were two cases being worked on:

One was an army base where people were kidnapped and brought, tortured and executed and dumped

The other is a large rural dump site from another part of the country

We stopped at one of the tables that had a mostly complete skeleton assembled

It was a young teenaged boy

Each of the bones and even fragments were all numbered:

four letters (for inst) and then 4 numbers and then 4 more numbers, corresponding to the institute (doing this work) the site location, mass grave date, and so on...

Another technician picked up the boy's skull

It was cracked in several places.

He called our attention to deep gashes in the side, top and back of the skull

These were made by machete he told us.

All told this boy was hit deeply cut and finally killed by 7 blows to the head by a machete

We walked across the room to a small tray with the bones of a small child laid out.

We learned that Gen. Rios Montt the leader of the army during the war, who is now on trial for war crimes and genocide ordered the murders of adult and children alike about 35% of the people he murdered were small children like this one whose body we were looking at

We learned that the Institute gets notice of a lawsuit filed by a family or a village about a murder that took place

The cultural anthropologists go and interview each and every witness

The archeologist team goes to where the witnesses said they saw bodies being dumped and dig.

Each grave site is documented by photos and by a team that takes great time and care

"We must follow up on each lawsuit, because if we do not do this, nobody will, and the survivors will be victimized once again"

The remains are brought back to this building in cardboard boxes, with numbers corresponding to the date found, location, court case number and so on.

Now we know what all the boxes, stacked from floor to ceiling have in them...

Our entire building is filled with boxes waiting to be opened, and reassembled.

We learned that the teams of scientists - after each bone is found, given proper ID and assembled, are then placed inside one of the baby caskets we walked past in the entry way.  The remains are brought back to the village where the families live and there the bones are taken out of the casket and placed in an adult sized casket. Women in the village weave new clothes for the dead, and the scientists actually dress the bones with these new clothes, and then there is a burial ceremony according to the traditions of the Mayan culture.

Joel told us about the profound theology of going through all of this care to honor the dead and the family and the culture in a way that brings closure, healing and rest to the families that have been waiting for years and years for word on what happened to their loved ones.

The trial of Gen. Montt is front page news here. It has captured the attention of the entire nation and of all Central America.

One would have to search for news about this in the local papers or TV news in the USA.

Letter about Ruth and Emilio Beltran in Mexico City Prison:

Greetings in Christ. I am sending you this letter to inform you about the current situation of Ruth and Emilio Beltran. The Beltrans are Evangelical Christians, pastors, and close personal friends, who created and operated a home in Mexico City for street children called Casa Adulam.

Ruth and Emilio have been unjustly kept in Mexico City prison for the past three years.

Casa Adulam was a place of hope, safety, joy, and unconditional love for children who had been orphaned or tossed out of their families. Casa Adulam grew into a ministry that had a huge facility in the central part of Mexico City housing many children, and had room for them to play, learn, and grow as healthy kids.  Due to their faithfulness and passion to rescue children, their ministry grew to include houses for orphans across Mexico and in several other nations.

Casa Adulam became an international model of inner city ministry and was THE connection point between the Mustard Seed Foundation and the grass roots ministries of Mexico.  I have worked personally with Ruth and Emilio since I joined the staff of the Foundation in 2001 and have come to respect, love and admire them deeply.  From the day of my first visit to Mexico City as a MSF person, and each time I traveled to Mexico City, the Beltrans stopped what they were doing and helped the Mustard Seed Foundation connect with local grass roots ministries that we would otherwise never hear about.

On May 11, 2010, Ruth and Emilio were accused of enslaving the children (trata de personas), and Emilio was also accused of raping 7 girls, once a week, for a year.  The arrest was based on the accusations of a pastor on staff of Adulam who had been stealing money from the ministry and had been fired.  This January, the Court ruled against the Beltrans and sentenced Ruth to 72 years, and Emilio to 220 years in Mexico City prison. They are currently in a formal appeals process that should be completed by the end of  May.

You may continue reading for more details on their situation if you desire.  In consultation with Ruth and Emilio and their friends who are working for their release, I include the names of the people who have played a part in putting them in prison so that you have the full story. Even if you do not feel led to read the details, please pray for the Magistrates to see that there is no evidence of any wrongdoing and to release them from prison immediately.

Even if you do not feel led to read the details, please pray for the Magistrates to see that there is no evidence of any wrongdoing and to release them from prison immediately.

The Back Story:

Just before all of the problems started with Casa Adulam, Mexico City was rocked by the events that took place at another Evangelical orphanage called Casitas del Sur.  Casitas was accused of selling children.  People in Mexico City whom I trust have told me that this other ministry was actually guilty of placing children into new adoptive families without going through the endless laws and regulations that cover such activity.  A huge scandal erupted wherein this ministry was publicly accused of selling babies and children.  It was not true.  But the media made such a huge deal of this that it so thoroughly embarrassed the Mayor of Mexico City.

With all this scandal brewing in the public media, a trusted pastor who had worked on staff at Casa Adulam, named Eleazar, and who had been caught stealing money from the Casa Adulam had been fired. He and his family received less severance pay than they asked, but Adulam paid the amount the labor court determined. The pastor was not happy. In the following months his son, who had also worked at the home, wrote up a long and detailed accusation against Ruth and Emilio claiming that they had abused children, working them as slaves, and pimping them out to strangers as sex slaves.

At the same time, Rosi Orozco, a member of the ruling party at that time, the PAN Party (Partido Acción Nacional), was positioning herself as "the savior of the kids" in Mexico and aligned herself with the Mexico City Mayor.  Ms Orozco, a Congresswoman, who was running for the Senate, is a leader in the Evangelical Christian community in Mexico City.  To boost her political career, she began cooperating with the Mayor to take down Adulam.  Ms. Orozco, and the Mayor waited for the perfect moment, and then used the accusations of Pastor Eleazar's son to formally accuse our friends. In Mexico, one is still guilty until proven otherwise.

The Arrest

On May 11, 2010, Rosi Orozco called a trusted friend of Emilio and Ruth, asking that Emilio call her. Emilio and Ruth called and then went to Mexico City to meet her. Leaving the appointed spot, the judicial police were there to jail them. Several days later, on May 17 they raided the Casa Adulam orphanage.  The TV, Radio, and newspaper press were told in advance about this so that they were in attendance to document this high profile arrest.  All children, and the home psychologist were detained. Ruth and Emilio were accused of enslaving the children (trata de personas), and Emilio was also accused of raping 7 girls, once a week, for a year.  This was a HUGE scandal in the front page and lead story of the TV news.

Eleazar was no longer working at Adulam when they were taken. What he did do when he left was take all the info he needed to write up his case from the Adulam computers.

On July 11, 2010. Emilio, Ruth, the psychologist and the Administrative manager were formally charged. The Administrative manager remains in hiding.

Meanwhile, the children that lived in the Adulam orphanage were put into government run orphanages, although many escaped to the streets, as they were forced to work long hours and live in very poor conditions. The older kids went back to the parks, back under the highway bridges, or down into the storm sewers.  (I visited these spots with Emilio years ago and can attest that these horrible places are the only option for the older kids who were kicked out of Adulam when the City closed the ministry.)

The Long Slow Process:

Over the course of 2010 and 2011, most of the Adulam staff members were set free due to lack of proof of any wrongdoing.  Only the Adulam psychologist and Ruth and Emilio were left in prison at the end of 2011.

The way the courts work in the Mexico City is that lawyers present stacks of written documents, which are supposed to be read by the Judges.  There is little verbal testimony, and little option for the accused to face his or her accusers and stage their defense in person.  What there is, is mountains of paper!  In a typical serious case there might be several books of documents produced as the proceedings are written down. With the Adulam case, there are over 25 books of legal documents (each about 5 inches thick) that have been produced during the proceedings.  The chances that a Magistrates listening to an appeal have read all 25 or so volumes is thin.

One of the 3 Magistrates judging on a requested "amparo" or stay of justice, issued a private opinion stating that the children living in the orphanage having chores to do each day was not a case of exploitation.  And furthermore, while they understood that the accusations required the Beltrans be jailed, they did not see sufficient evidence to sentence Ruth and Emilio.  No secret stash of money was found in their personal or ministry bank accounts.  So the charges of running an organized criminal operation and of exploiting children have been struck a serious blow.

In spite of this opinion, the ruling judge was able to side step the order to provide further evidence before sentencing.

I recently learned that the evidence against Ruth and Emilio consisted of written statements, actually written by corrupt police officers but signed by children who lived in the Casa Adulam orphanage.  The kids had no idea what they were signing.  And the statements by the kids provided absolutely no proof, no witnesses, only their word.  Over the past two years, the Beltran’s lawyers have proved over and over that all this so called evidence was completely false, however, the new Magistrates have not accepted these facts.  Not yet.  Pray they do!

One other note:  a few days after Emilio and Ruth were jailed, Maru, a teenaged girl who really was like the Beltran’s daughter, was also jailed.  However, in exchange for a declaration against Ruth and Emilio, she was set free.  She has since recanted and says she is prepared to tell her story to the appeals court.  At one point she told the Beltran’s lawyer that she could round up some of the others who had lied about being raped.  Pray that the Magistrates allow these new testimonies!

Sentencing:

This past January 13, the Magistrates ‘reviewed’ the piles of documents in their case and ruled against them. And they were sentenced to prison terms of 72 years (Ruth) and 220 years (Emilio).  Emilio explained to me that rapists get 10-15 year terms. And assassins and murderers, if caught and convicted, might get a maximum sentence of 30-40 years.  A notorious bank robber or narco trafficker might get 20-40 years.  Having given this sentence, the judge went on to apply a law which allows one to serve sentences in parallel. In reality Emilio must now serve 22 years, and Ruth 8 to 11. No small sentence for innocent people.

The Appeal:

The official court case is now under ‘Apelacion.’  Legally, Ruth and Emilio have two remaining appeals left.  Their lawyer hopes the result of the appeal will be to further reduce the sentences; maybe to as low as 1/4 of the present number of years they must serve.  This would let Ruth out free, and reduce Emilio’s term to 5 or 6 years.

The first appeal in play at the moment, is an official appeal by their lawyers.  This appeal was filed in February of this year on behalf of the Beltrans.  Three Magistrates will rule on this appeal by May 31 – just 19 days from now!

If this appeal fails, there is one Final Appeal in December.  If both of these appeals fail, their lives are set and they will live in this hell for many more years.

Life in Prison:

On April 20th, I visited with Ruth and Emilio for the third time, in the Reclusorio Preventivo Oriente.  This is one of four State Prisons within the Districto Federal (DF) of Metro Mexico City.  It is located at Calle Reforma #50, Col. San Lorenzo Tezonco, C.P. 09800, Deleg. Iztapalapa.  It is southeast of the center of the city and houses about 11,000 men, including Emilio.  Ruth is housed in a women’s prison a few miles away in another part of the city.

In 2012, they were granted conjugal visits.  Ruth comes to the men’s prison on one night per week, and Emilio goes to her prison for one afternoon per week.  Emilio pointed to the ‘luxury suites’ where married couples can have a few hours of privacy. “But the bed bugs, the stench, the unclean bedding, and noises of others make it nearly impossible for us to even talk to one another.  And we have to pay a corrupt prison guard and another inmate a lot of money for the honor of using this filthy ‘hotel.’  Other people here operate these suites as a business. Everything here is business!”

In my conversations with Ruth and Emilio, I have learned that some terrible things have happened to the Beltrans, since the January sentencing.  Before the sentencing, Emilio was a pastor and co-leader of a church and small group ministry in Reclusorio Oriente.  I met all of these pastors in my visit last year. Each of them actually confessed to the judges in their respective cases that they had committed robbery, murder, and one even raped children.

Up to the moment he was officially sentenced, he was a trusted and valued member of the pastoral leadership council in this prison, and told me of the intensive 5-year discipleship course he and the other pastors were implementing in the prison.  Before Emilio was put into prison, the church had dozens of small groups and a large prison-wide church that held several services per day.  Under Emilio’s care, the small group ministry grew to include several thousand inmates, 24-hour prayer and fasting groups, and the church held 12 services per day!

But after his extreme sentence, the other pastors turned their backs on Emilio and tossed him out of the church.  Emilio told me that he was tossed out because the scandal and notoriety of the 200-year sentencing was too much for the other pastors to be seen praying and ministering with him.

This has been a blow to Emilio.  Once again, he has poured his life into other Christian men who have turned their backs on him.

First were the hundreds of pastors and ministry leaders whom he ministered to and mentored over the years of his leadership in Adulam.  Many times they literally gave their office, staff, administrative gifts and visionary planning process away to other ministries, churches, and associations that asked for help. But none of the men and women whom Adulam has helped over the years have come to visit them in the time they have been in prison.

And now on top of this, these other inmates who are behind bars for real crimes committed, who became pastors after getting put into prison, have rejected Emilio completely.  It is a testimony to his character and strength that Ruth and Emilio can endure such rejections like this without being so totally crushed that he simply gives up.

Since being shunned by his inmate pastoral council buddies, Emilio has been working hard to start a new church in the prison.  “Since January 2013, God has raised up a team of 22 other pastors that now work with me and who go cell to cell seeking to pray with and minister to the other inmates in Oriente. We now have a church with about 50 small groups of 10 men each – in just a few months! The Lord is working in amazing ways.”

I also learned that from the first day that Emilio was formally sentenced in January, he has had to endure a regimen of reporting and presenting himself each hour on the hour, to sign a document that states “I, Emilio Moctezuma Beltran Saldana did commit crimes worthy of 200 years in this prison…”  Ruth told me that it did not matter what he was doing, or where he was in the prison, he had to run like crazy to get to this one specific office and present himself as “One of the top-ten felons” held in this prison of 11,000 men.

In April the prison let up on Emilio, so now he has to present himself and sign this official document once every three hours.

Emilio’s cell is 13’ by 8’.  It has 21 other inmates living in it. There are 7 beds in this cell. So he “cuddles” up next to another inmate each night.  Those that are lower on the prison pecking order sleep while sitting on the open toilets in the corner of this cell where they are bitten by bugs and rats all night long.  Emilio told me that he is infested with fleas and is waking up at all hours of the night to kill huge cockroaches that crawl over his body all night long. “I killed 34 roaches just last night!”

The inmates (those convicted and those awaiting trial) in this prison have to pay multiple bribes each day just to get through the day.  Everything in the prison is a business.  Some inmates have family members that visit each week and bring food, personal toiletries, or small items for their loved one to sell inside the prison so that he can afford to live there.  Those that do not have any family that can visit and bring supplies, have to rely on other activities to help pay all the bribes.  If there is no other option, an inmate becomes a ‘puta,’ a bitch, and sells himself as a prostitute to get the money to pay bribes.

On my first visit to this prison, I was assaulted by a group of inmates who fought each other and wrestled with me demanding that they be my official prison tour guide – for a fee.  Every single other family member or friend who comes into this prison has to pay bribe after bribe to get face to face with their loved ones as I do to see Emilio.  The first two visits cost me about $20 USD each. My most recent visit cost me about $100 USD. Talk about inflation!

Multiply the bribes collected by the 3,000 or so guests that come into just this one prison on a weekday and you begin to understand the amazing amount of money the guards, prison chiefs, and inmates are taking from people. The irony is that in each of my three visits into this prison, I had to pay bribes to guards who were standing in front of huge official government signs that declared, “There is NO corruption tolerated here!”

Once I finally got in to see the Beltrans, we sat at a rented table and shouted at one another for 4 hours.  We had to shout because of the noise made by the outdoor worship service a few steps away, and the boom-boxes playing music, and the musicians serenading each family, and the many people hawking their wares to earn money.  Oh, and we were surrounded by little tents created by stringing heavy lines from bars to trees and light poles, with blankets thrown over them, which housed couples enjoying conjugal visits.  Shouts from behind a blanket, “Oh God!” on one side…and a chorus of “Help me Lord” thundered from the other side.

Oh, and lest I forget, we endured the dancing of two inmates who were dressed as women, who were busy drumming up business – sex for hire – with any other inmate who had money to pay.  We also tried to avoid the stares of women who were ‘friends or sisters’ of the inmates who were visiting that day only to be pimped out by an inmate to help him raise his bribe fund.  I used the bathroom when I visited the prison.  On each visit I was escorted by Emilio or by one of his disciples so that I would not be abducted.  An inmate would negotiate my fee and pay for me so that the ‘tall gringo’ would not be seen reaching into his pockets and pulling out money.  This would be too tempting for others watching me, not to resist rolling me for whatever money I had with me.

Emilio told me that beatings are common. We all endured the beating of a younger smaller inmate by 3 other bigger inmates for some infraction committed against the informal “rules of conduct.”  He was knocked down and pummeled a few feet from us.  If this happened on my street I would step in and stop it.  But Emilio told me that my doing so would invite “correction” from a group of other men who would take great pleasure in hurting me.  Emilio told me that another younger man, barely 18 was dragged down into the basement below his cellblock and was ritually murdered.  “This happened last week. His heart was cut out and sacrificed to Santa Muerte.”  This death cult has millions of followers in Mexico and has become the god of narco traffickers and assassins.  “Churches” are built to honor this god, and the prison is no exception.  Groups of death worshippers are known to beat and kill others in order to appease this god.  One drugged out inmate handed Emilio his hand carved Santa Muerte sculpture.  I told Emilio I would throw it away for him so that those watching would not get angry watching an Evangelical break up their god and then seek revenge on him later on that night.

Ruth and Emilio told me that their food and water is filled with insects and disease.  After his sentencing guards took great pleasure in peeing into his food and spitting into it when they could not pee.  His body is filled with parasites and he suffers from worms.  He has lost over 50 pounds since going into prison.

Emilio told me that at any moment, without cause, the prison chief could order him to be put into solitary.  This means a tiny room without any light or window, a bare floor, a hole in the corner for a toilet and nothing but bugs and rats to keep him busy all day and all night.  “Food” would be thrown through a slot in the door onto the floor.  If they wanted to make an even bigger statement, they could strip him of his clothes as well.

On my visit in April 2013, we met in a garden courtyard that surrounds a basketball court.  Inmates and corrupt guards cooperatively run this garden as a business.  They charge inmates about $150 USD per visit per couple to get about 5 hours together – on a rented blanket (extra), under a rented canopy (extra), and at a rented table and chairs (also extras).  All guests in this garden are entertained (whether they like it or not) by a roaming band of troubadours and interrupted by traveling salesmen (inmates selling candy, smokes, pens, plastic jewelry, socks, you name it).

Emilio has to pay a fee for each section of corridor or hallway he walks through, plus a fee to use the bathroom, and so on.  “I have to pay about $15 USD in fees each day, just to move through a normal day in this prison.” Emilio’s family gives him and Ruth money to live in this prison.  To supplement his income he sells children’s books and Ruth sells jewelry to families that visit their loved ones in prison.

Ruth held up a pincushion with earrings and said, “This is what got us in trouble in the first place.  Rosi Orozco told the Police that we were forcing small children to sit in a windowless room and assemble necklaces and bracelets like these while not feeding them or giving them proper care…Now selling these things in the prison is keeping me alive.”

Ruth has better living conditions that Emilio.  She has two other cellmates in a cell that is 13’ by 32’. The women’s prison she is living in has slightly cleaner facilities than the men’s prison.  She is the senior pastor of a church in the woman’s prison, with about 70 members at this moment.

The Beltran’s Family:

The Beltrans have a son and daughter now in high school.  They are living by themselves in an unfinished house that the family owns in another part of the country and is close to their grandparents.  (Robbers recently broke into the Beltran home and stole all the pipes, wires, interior doors and fixtures.  So the kids walk over to their grandparents’ house to bathe and wash clothing.) The kids get into the prison to see their parents twice a year these days.  The trip takes several buses and a taxi, and costs a lot of money.  Ruth and Emilio’s parents are now living on the Mexican equivalent of Social Security so they are not able to help pay for these trips to prison and back.  Emilio’s brother, Tomas, used to visit about once a week, but he is now unemployed and cannot afford the bribes.  Lisa and I are helping to pay for the kids’ food and school expenses.  Jack Honey’s church is helping to get them clothes, donations of food, and supplies.

What you can do!

I urge you to pray that God will release the Beltrans. They are sick, tired, and are buffeted by wave after wave of despair and bad news. The Lord is using them while they are in the prison for sure.  But they feel so abandoned by the Church in Mexico and so disconnected from their family.  The separation is painful, but then to have to endure the humiliation that they have endured at the hands of corrupt people with power – is too much.

Please pray. And please send this on to others whom you know and trust, and if there are any people you know that have a position of influence with the US or Mexican government.

If you do read all the way to the end of this letter, God bless you!  Let me know if you would like to receive updates on the current appeal.

They desperately need our prayers to see the light of Jesus, to be a light, and able to discern the light in the dark world in which we live.

Just as Jesus told his disciples, I think Jesus is telling us as grandparents, we are to be the light of the world to our grandchildren. We are not to keep our love for Jesus a secret, we are to be light-bearers on the light stand and shine for Jesus. When we let our lights shine by our example, good deeds, and prayers, we will inspire our grandchildren to open their hearts and their lives to Jesus. ¹   If you are praying for your grandchildren tell them you are praying for them.

Are you a light on a stand, glowing in the dark, shining the love of Jesus to your grandchildren?  Share with us in the comments how you shine for Jesus to your grandchildren.

It's only 44 days until Grandparents Day of Prayer on September 8. Will you join grandparents throughout the world to unite in prayer for the next generation? Would you go to https://www.facebook.com/GrandparentDayOfPrayer  to "like" the page to indicate your participation?

Prayer:

Dear Lord, I pray my grandchildren will see you as the light of their world in my life.

In Jesus' name, Amen

IRAN: CHRISTIANS IMPRISONED FOR THEIR FAITH

by Elizabeth Kendal

On 12 October 2012 security officials raided a house in Shiraz where members of the Church of Iran denomination had gathered to pray. Elderly believers were harassed and threatened and eight others were arrested. A few days later two other members were summoned to the Intelligence Ministry detention centre where they were subsequently arrested (although a lady with kidney disease was released the following day). The believers were transferred to Adel-Abad Prison and kept separate from other prisoners. Whilst two believers were released on bail in late October, the others remained incarcerated until March 2013. The judge set bail for prayer leader Mohammed Roghangir at US$200,000, while the others had to find US$80,000 each. The exorbitant sums were doubtless designed to cripple the believers and deter others.

Sentences were handed down on Tuesday 16 July. Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) reports: 'Mohammad Roghangir was sentenced to six years, Massoud Rezaie to five years, Mehdi Ameruni and Bijan Farokhpour Haghighi to three years, Shahin Lahooti and Suroush Saraie to two-and-half-years each, while Eskandar Rezaie and Roxana Forughi were both sentenced to one year in prison.' Morning Star News adds that the believers were found guilty of 'action against the national security' and 'propaganda against the system'. These believers were not plotting terrorism or spying for the CIA, nor were they marching in the streets inciting counter-revolution! They were praying as Christians. Because Islam is a material and political religion, apostasy (leaving Islam) is not viewed as a spiritual issue as much as a betrayal of the Ummah (Muslim community) and as treason against the Islamic State. To prevent apostates from becoming a source of 'fitna' (temptation to doubt Islam), Islamic law mandates that apostates be killed, or at least rendered utterly undesirable. [In reality, Islam's repression and cruelty is a prime source of 'fitna' and Muslims are increasingly seeing Islamic states are utterly undesirable.]

Pastor Robert Asserian had been arrested on 21 May in a crackdown on Farsi-speaking ministries, but was released on bail on 2 July on the condition that he remain silent. The Assemblies of God (AoG) church in Tehran where he ministered has since closed (RLPB 212). Mostafa Bordbar (27), a convert from Islam imprisoned in Tehran's notorious Evin Prison, is awaiting trial on charges of participating in a house church, an illegal gathering. Bordbar was arrested on 27 December 2012 when police raided a Christmas celebration in a Christian's home. Bordbar has been imprisoned before, for converting to Christianity, and was out on bail. Judge Pir-Abbas (the 'hanging judge') is handling his case.

The election of President Hassan Rouhani has not changed anything. The clerical regime hand-picks the candidates and manipulates the entire election process. Whilst Rouhani was presented to the people and the world as a 'reformist' and 'moderate', he is neither. He has a pleasant public persona, so he is preferred by many in the reformist and pragmatist camps, but he is no counter-revolutionary. Rouhani is a total insider, close to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who is doubtless pleased that a belligerent, obnoxious and increasingly non-compliant puppet has been replaced with a silky-smooth one. Banafsheh Zand, a US-based Iranian journalist (whose own father was arrested in 2001, then imprisoned and tortured before being murdered in 2011) describes Khamenei as a masterful tactician, and Rouhani as 'duplicitous' - deceitful and double-dealing.

Mostafa Bordbar, Farshid Fathi and Alizreza Seyyedian - three Christians in prison for their faith - have written to President Rouhani requesting that, with God's help, he might restore respect and honour to Iran's name by restoring religious freedom. [See the RLPB blog for a link to that letter.]

PLEASE PRAY SPECIFICALLY THAT -

* the great Counsellor, the ever-present, comforting and empowering Holy Spirit will remind all Iran's imprisoned believers and their families that God's grace is sufficient for them, for his power is made perfect in their weakness. (2 Corinthians 12:9)

* local believers will have courage and conviction to uphold and care for the persecuted, despite the risks involved, demonstrating sacrificial love as befits a family that has put its trust in God. (2 Timothy 1:15-18; John 13:34,35)

* the Church in the world will 'Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body.' (Hebrews 13:3 ESV)

* God will awaken Iranians to realise their country's problems are not administrative but are spiritual; may he bless Iran with revival! (Ephesians 2:8,9)

SUMMARY FOR BULLETINS UNABLE TO RUN THE WHOLE ARTICLE

CHRISTIANS IN IRAN IMPRISONED FOR THEIR FAITH

On Tuesday 16 July 2013 eight Iranian converts from Islam were sentenced to between one and six years imprisonment. They had been arrested at a house church prayer meeting in October 2012 and were found guilty of 'action against the national security' and 'propaganda against the system'. Robert Asserian, pastor of the now-closed Assemblies of God church in Tehran, was arrested on 21 May and released on bail on 2 July, conditional on his 'remain[ing] silent'. Mostafa Bordbar, imprisoned in Tehran's notorious Evin Prison, is awaiting trial on charges of participating in a house church, an illegal gathering. Faith can be extremely costly in Iran, with long prison sentences and crippling amounts required for bail. Please pray for the Church in Iran.

PAKISTAN (updating RLPB 219)

In Gojra on 20 July Christians Shafqat Masih (43) and his wife Shagufta (40) were arrested after a local Muslim accused them of sending a blasphemous text message. Their relatives have fled and it is not clear who is caring for the couple's four children aged 5 to 11 years. Shafqat insists that the police coerced him into making a confession and maintains that the accusation is false. The similarities to last week's case are blatant. Morning Star News comments: 'Accusations of blasphemous text messages could be a dangerous trend, as obtaining and activating SIM cards using someone else's national identity card is not difficult in Pakistan. Such evidence is hard to challenge in court, leaving people of all faiths at risk of being falsely convicted of blasphemy.' Please pray for the Church in Pakistan.

RAMADAN commenced on 9 July and will run through to 7 August. Please pray for Muslims during Ramadan. For resources, visit http://www.30-days.net/

Where Do You Place Your Focus?

Recently, I received an update from a missionary friend serving in Bohol, Philippines.  She shared, "The Lord allowed us to share the Gospel in 733 schools, 183,035 people heard the Good News of Jesus, and 174,082 of those prayed to receive Jesus as their Savior! I'm still in awe of what The Lord is doing here and that He is choosing to allow me to be a part of it:) So blessed!"
This missionary is living out Jesus' promise in Acts 1:8 and is experiencing the outworking of Ephesians 3:20- God doing immeasurably more than she asked or imagined.  To do what she's doing, she's yielded herself to be filled with the Holy Spirit.  If she operated only in her own wisdom, creativity, and strength, she'd not be seeing this number of souls accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior.  In fact, if she lived only for herself, she probably wouldn't be on the mission field at all.

On Mission With God in Prayer -What a Joy!

What A Joy!

19 July 2013

What a joy it has been to see what God had in store for me when I stepped out and accepted a position from Avery Willis to serve under him back in 2006 for a brand new, up and coming mission network. Today I continue to serve with that group, as the Prayer Director, for International Orality Network (ION).

My life certainly has changed from working within my denomination to becoming a free agent and seeing the activity of God all across the face of the globe. The opportunity to have input with global prayer leaders and work to influence prayer leaders all around the globe to begin to find out about "Orality" and "Oral Peoples" those who do not read as a part of their culture. And to work to be an advocate and educate others in how to pray for the Unreached People Groups (UPG) and the Unengaged Unreached People Groups (UUPG) across the face of the globe.

70% of the population of the world 5.7 billion are oral learners and of that group 1/2 are children! We have to get the gospel to them in a format that will allow them to really hear and an opportunity to hear the good news of the saving grace of Jesus Christ. Not to mention the movement of getting the Bible the "Story of God" to the masses in a way that they can receive and make decisions for salvation.

The Gutenberg press enabled a print revolution and unprecedented spread of the Word of God. Before that the main way to receive the message of the Bible was only by oral means. The Gutenberg press opened the Bible to the ordinary man, but only to --those who could read.

ION is asking the Body of Christ to devote energies, strategies, and resources to provide access for all oral learners to engage the entire Word of God through audio-digital means, so that every tribe, every tongue, and every people group may hear, understand, and have the opportunity to respond!

I was asked to write up what God had done with our team that would be used as a chapter for a book that was to be published and presented at the Lausanne CapeTown 2010 gathering. Maybe you might be interested to hear about our journey.

Here is a pdf of that chapter* - "On Mission With God in Prayer"

Prayer%20Chapter%20-%20Journey%20in%20Prayer%20On%20Mission%20with%20God%20in%20Prayer.pdf

You can order the entire book thru International Mission Board (IMB) at:

Using heart language to transform hearts is resulting in churches in many difficult parts of the world. Breakthroughs with indigenous partnership formations have resulted in brand new Bible stories in an oral format to reach the unreached....* The prayer chapter is included in the book

I am delighted to be able to help intercessors, prayer warriors, and pray-ers to see what God is doing in bringing the gospel to those yet unengaged and unreached, without scripture recordings or scripture portions. Did you know there are over 2,250 people groups who do not have even one verse! It is very exciting to be a part of seeing the completion of the Great Commission through the collaborative work of partner groups.

One of the things I get to do in sharing about this is to publish a monthly prayer focus which is available from our website at http://orality.net/weekly_prayer_focus

or you can come and find us on Facebook

https://www.facebook.com/pages/International-Orality-Network/143049235766186?ref=br_tf

The International Orality Network is made up of over 1200+ organizations, agencies and individuals. Our focus is to influence the Body of Christ to "make disciples" of all oral learners. Understanding about orality can be very complex, but at the core, it is simply sharing the gospel and the stories of the Bible in small portions that can be understood, received and reproduced. We would be under estimating the power of His Word to present the gospel for performance, but truely see God at work when ordinary men with an extraordinary God share His Story and step back to watch it directly have an affect upon the heart of the receiver.

Orality tools can also be in audio or video format. It now involves digital devices that have gospel stories loaded onto them In all kinds of different approaches. They may include songs, skits, dances or full productions that share the stories of the gospel story, God's Story. Sharing the chronological story of God unfolding His Story. This also includes biblical videos or short movies. At this point in history, we really are amazed each day at the creativity of the Holy Spirit to help to put new tools and curriculum out that would not have been possible in times past. With new technology mission agencies are collaborating and working together to allow the reworking old tools into new tools, such as with the Jesus Film being used by MentorLink in their leadership training curriculum, "Days With Jesus" using a 40 days format to show how Jesus led and shared who he was in groups all around the world. http://www.mentorlink.org/

Included in orality is the multifaceted mix of a re-occuring theme of the church, to bring scripture engagement back to God's people. Now through the use of audio digitization of scriptures as a daily part of personal study of the bible, discipleship and teaching. If you have not already found out about this, may I introduce to you two exceptional apps to check out http://www.Bible.is and http://www.YouVersion.com --both of these have multiple options for daily bible study directly from the scriptures that you can download into your computer, tablet or smart phone.

You may be interested to know that 2/3 of the world "do not, will not and cannot ever" depend on literate (letters on a page) methods or formats to hear the Gospel. Different ways to get the message to oral learners are emerging. Some only using audio formats, some using multiple methods. ION issued a declaration to share our heart, to influence mission leaders across the globe to begin to step into God's movement in this area. You can read the declaration at: http://orality.net/declaration

If you have questions or want to talk, I would love to hear from you!

Colliding Kingdoms & Living on the Fringe

Recently my wife and I started watching the Fringe TV series on Netflix. The fictional show deals with unexplained supernatural and technological occurrences investigated by the FBI’s “fringe science” division. It turns out that many of the grisly events have been caused by a collision of parallel universes and alternate timelines.

Having watched several seasons of Fringe, I can’t help but think of a pivotal but rarely discussed passage in Job 26:14: “Behold, these are the fringes of His ways; and how faint a word we hear of Him!”

After years of feeling the smug satisfaction of knowing he was an exceptionally upright and virtuous man, Job finally understood an awful truth: Although he had been doing all the right “religious” things, he was only on the outer edges of God’s plan for his life. Instead of having an intimate daily relationship with the Lord, he was only hearing God’s voice faintly and sporadically.

During the climactic final scene of Job’s story, he admits to the Lord, “I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear; but now my eye sees You; therefore I retract, and I repent in dust and ashes” (Job 42:5-6).

People always wonder why Job had to go through such horrendous trials. Part of the answer is simply this: God wouldn’t allow Job to remain on the fringes.

The Lord wanted to bless Job in new ways, beyond his wildest dreams. Yet none of that was possible if Job was content to stay on the fringes. He already had been blessed with great wealth, but God had a far greater dimension of abundance in mind for Job.

There have been many times in my Christian life when I languished on the fringes of God’s ways. Perhaps you have too. Often when we’re on the fringes, we don’t even know it.

Until the heat was on, Job didn’t have a clue about his true condition or what he was missing. He had fallen into the common trap of comparing himself to those around him, instead of comparing himself to God’s holiness. He was content to be “the greatest of all the people of the East” instead of great in God’s kingdom (Job 1:1-3).

Just as in the Fringe series, Job’s ordeal stemmed from a collision of universes or kingdoms. God versus Satan. Good versus evil. Relationship versus religion. The judgmental assumptions of his friends versus God’s ultimate plan to bless him.

But amid this horrific collision, God was working all things together for Job’s good (Romans 8:28). If it hadn’t been for his trials, Job might have never discovered he was living on the fringe.

However, there’s a major difference between Fringe and the Bible. In the TV series, exciting “paranormal” events happen on the “fringe” of human experience. In contrast, when believers are content to stay on the fringe in their relationship with God, the exact opposite is true—life is boring and there’s little, if any, experience of the supernatural. A life on the fringe is a bland, powerless, and unfulfilling existence.

Aren’t you tired of living on the fringes of God’s purposes? I am.

It’s time to dive in and go deeper in your relationship with the Lord. Yes, you may experience turbulent and disturbing collisions between parallel kingdoms at times, but that’s where the fun is. It’s in the center of God’s will that you will find peace, satisfaction, and fruitfulness.

Who is your Spiritual Responsibility?

When my husband and I approached our midlife season, we received the special gift of grandparenting. However, along with the gift, God gave us an assignment/responsibility to imprint another generation with the message of His faithfulness.

God placed each of our children, grandchildren, and their spouses specifically in our lives so we can be their prayer warriors and prayer advocates. He has given us the awesome opportunity to partner with Him on their behalf. God has placed three sons, three daughters-in-laws, twelve grandchildren, plus a new great-grandchild and now expecting another great-grandchild. They are spiritual responsibility along with their parents.

He has given YOU your specific children, grandchildren, and future descendants. Our families are our spiritual responsibility and our primary mission field. I hope and pray you will see the urgency to intentionally uphold your children and grandchildren in prayer.

It's only 51 days until National Grandparents' Day is on September 8. Christian Grandparenting Network (CGN) is proclaiming it a Grandparents' Day of Prayer, asking grandparents throughout the world to join in prayer for their grandchildren.

Since we are living in a generation that desperately needs Jesus CGN would like to give you a chapter from the book, Grandparenting with a Purpose titled "Communicate your Faith to your Grandchildren." Go to https://www.facebook.com/GrandparentDayOfPrayer?ref=hl for the Free Download and while you are there "like" the page.

A Voice in the Wilderness

“A preacher preaches a message. A voice is much more than this. A message can deliver content, but a voice comes from an anointed life that has the power to actually turn people. A message delivers information. A voice delivers people. Anyone can deliver a message, but only a consecrated life can be a voice.” Wes Martin

Today we are hearing voices from every direction. The voice of technology, and the voices on the internet and TV are at an all-time high. Rarely can we get away from all the noise. It is blaring for our attention all the time day and night. Everyone seems to be trying to be a voice in a busy and rapidly increasingly world of noise and empty promises.

But what is God looking for at this point in human history?

He is looking for consecrated ones who will be His voice; His voice in prayer, His voice in speaking words of truth, and His voice in everyday life in various situations that we encounter all day long. Even though we are in a world of noise, we are in a famine for truth. False promises and lies are everywhere. It’s time to stand on God’s Word and speak His truth into our life circumstances.

God is looking for those who walk in wholehearted abandonment like John the Baptist. His life is an example to each one of us.

The Life of John the Baptist

“Then they said to him, ‘Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?' He said, 'I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the LORD,' as the prophet Isaiah said” (John 1:22-23, NKJV).

Let’s look at some of the qualities of the life of John the Baptist because he was God’s voice in the wilderness. What was John like? How could he become a powerful and anointed voice for God?

  • John identified himself as a voice - He prepared people to encounter God Himself. When he spoke, decisive shifts took place in people’s lives and they turned toward righteousness.
  • John lived in simplicity - He lived in isolation and was consumed with His message and the one who had sent him.
  • John was a faithful witness - He was faithful to the word of the Lord regardless of cost (John 3:7-18, 29).
  • John was established in His identity before God - He did not look to other men for his identity or for approval. He looked to God.
  • John was a man of prayer and devotion - As he grew up he became strong in spirit in the desert (Luke 1:80). He had a deep life with God.
  • John was a consecrated vessel - He was set apart as a Nazarite to minister to God all his days. He did not drink wine or strong drink (Luke 1:15). He practiced fasting regularly.

In these days God is looking for those who can be His voice in the wilderness. Like John the Baptist, He is looking for those who will prepare for His Second Coming.

Are you a voice for God? Are you that consecrated vessel God can use in this critical day?

The Spiritual Violence of John the Baptist

“There has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater [in opportunity] than he. And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force (Matthew 11:11-12).

John was the Father’s messenger who came to prepare the way for Jesus. He was the greatest man and a burning and shining light (John 5:35). Matthew 11:12  speaks of spiritual violence. It points to being resolute to pay any price necessary in seeking more of God. This is what John the Baptist was like. He violently reordered his priorities and the way he did everything. His lifestyle had a violent impact on the devil’s kingdom.

Jesus set John forth as the premier model of wholeheartedness in devotion. In his spiritual violence, John radically sought after God without reservation or compromise. He loved God. He was great in God’s sight. When God releases a greater measure of His power and presence, He looks for a greater dedication. In these days God is looking for those who will experience the Kingdom of God in greater measure by the holy forcefulness of spiritual violence. John the Baptist was this type of man internally because of his extravagant love for God that confronted all the inner hindrances and barriers to fully experiencing God in his heart. John the Baptist was hungry for God. He had a vision to have everything that God would give the human spirit in his age.

John called himself a friend of the bridegroom (John 3:29). This is how he saw himself. He had a forerunner ministry. He opened his heart to God and prepared the Bride for the coming of Christ. He stood, He heard, and He greatly rejoiced because of the Bridegroom’s voice. He modeled the way to prepare a spiritual highway (Luke 3:7-20). He emphasized calling people to repent and announced the coming of Jesus. He called people to righteous living. He modeled a wholehearted pursuit of God and what it looks like. His life’s message is clear. No one has ever passed him in abandonment to God.

So many in the Church have lost their purpose in life. In the pursuit of making this world a pleasant place to live, multitudes have chased after lesser gods. We must listen to the message of John the Baptist. We must repent and return to God with wholehearted abandonment. We must wait upon God and prepare in these end times (Matthew 24:42-43; 25:13; Mark 13:33-38; Luke 21:26; Revelation 3:3 16:15).

As we wait, pray, and live in righteousness, we gain strength for our hearts. Jesus is coming again. Like John we must prepare this generation for the Lord’s return. John prepared for the first coming of the Lord through modeling his lifestyle, his message, and through the power of the Holy Spirit that was on his life. We must prepare others for the second coming of Christ. We may be a forerunner as an intercessor, in the marketplace, in the media or as a preacher calling people to prepare the way of the Lord. We have the same Spirit in our lives as John did.

Let’s be inspired by John's life. Let’s let it challenge our lives to the core. We are God’s model of wholeheartedness. We are God’s voice at this time.

Being God’s Voice

As you pray, ask God to make you His voice. Ask Him to release His authority in your life to turn others back to God and righteousness. The world is living in a wilderness of increasing fear, anxiety, loneliness, and pain. People are hiding their fear through constant activity and in so many unfulfilling ways in their anxious attempt to make this life pleasant. They need God.

We are the voice of the Lord on the earth as we positively declare His will through our prayers and our lives. God is looking for consecrated vessels like John the Baptist. He is waiting for something to be done, waiting for someone to pray His will. We become God’s voice on the earth for breakthrough by praying His will as we listen and obey. Heaven responds to our prayers. God listens and acts on our behalf.

The atmosphere changes; we change; our lives change.

You are God's voice in this generation, pointing the way to His second coming. As you pray, you are releasing His power in the world. As you speak, you are declaring His will on this earth. As you travail, your tears are releasing His power to break the darkness over the land. As you live, you are modeling a dedicated life.

He wants to use you in greater and greater dimensions. He wants you to rise up higher as a consecrated vessel for His glory. But it’s up to you. The King of the Universe is calling you higher. Will you say “yes” to a holy lifestyle, to a deeper prayer life, to a level of consecration that only He can make real in your life?

Let’s be His voice in the wilderness. Let’s prepare others for His Second Coming. Let's prepare the way of the Lord.

He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. And all people will see God’s salvation... I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.' And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them” (Luke 3:3-6, 16-18).

A powerful word -  A Voice in the Wilderness - Prepare the Way of the Lord

PAKISTAN: FALSE CLAIMS, BLASPHEMY AND INTERPOL

by Elizabeth Kendal

On 11 December 2011 Muslim clerics in Gojra reported to police that a Christian man by the name of Sajjad Masih, a resident of Pakpatten (a two-and-a-half-hour drive south-east of Gojra), had sent them blasphemous messages via mobile phone. Upon learning of the accusation, Sajjad immediately went into hiding. Eventually Christian leaders in Gojra convinced him to accompany them to the Gojra City Police Station so he could record his statement. Once the police had Sajjad in custody they refused to release him. Morning Star News reports that as soon as the Christian leaders left the police station, the police started beating Sajjad. To coerce a 'confession' they hung him upside down, connected his feet to electric wires and threatened to electrocute him. Sajjad 'confessed' and was transferred to Toba Tek Singh Prison. On Saturday 13 July 2013 the court in Toba Tek Singh District, Punjab Province, found Sajjad Masih (29) guilty of blasphemy. Sajjad was fined 200,000 Rupees (USD1980) and sentenced to life in prison.

The judge was not bothered that the case was full of anomalies. According to the prosecution, Sajjad Masih was engaged to Ruma Masih, a Christian girl in Gojra Christian Colony, who then betrayed him by marrying a man in the UK. It is alleged that the vindictive Sajjad then used a mobile phone SIM card that he purchased in Ruma's name to send blasphemous messages to clerics in Gojra in the hope that she would be blamed and punished for her 'betrayal'. The court accepted the prosecution's case despite a total lack of evidence. Morning Star News and Pakistan Christian Post both report that the prosecution was unable to produce the SIM card, the mobile phone, phone records or eye witnesses to support their case. Furthermore, evidence was provided to the effect that Sajjad had been in his office all day on the day the SIM card was alleged to have been purchased. Also, the complainant in the case, Tariq Saleem, backed down under cross-examination, confessing that he had been coerced by police to file the case when in truth he had never received a blasphemous message. Despite all this, Sajjad was charged, convicted and sentenced, all due to pressure from Islamic clerics.

If this were not enough, Indian Express reported on 14 July, 'Muslims and clerics of Gojra also pressured police to try Ruma under the blasphemy law.' So, 'On the request of police, the federal interior ministry sought a red corner notice [Red Notice] from Interpol for the arrest of Ruma in the UK but she is yet to be traced. Pakistani police have declared her a "proclaimed offender" or fugitive'. According to Attorney Javed Sahotra, some 'young Muslim men' in Gojra had plotted against Sajjad Masih to 'punish him for being friends with a local Christian girl'. No-one has yet explained why they cared about Sajjad's relationship with Ruma. Maybe these young Muslim men framed Sajjad to get him out of the way. Perhaps they are seeking to punish Ruma for not submitting to their will.

This case shows how police actions and court rulings are being dictated by belligerent 'Muslims and clerics' rather than by law or reason whilst the government is either unwilling or unable to do anything about it. Clearly Pakistan is no longer ruled by law, but by vindictive and intolerant Muslims and clerics who persecute with impunity and dictate to police, judges and lawmakers. Even in the rare case of an acquittal, a person who has been accused of blasphemy is targeted for life. [There is a link to the documentary 'Murder in God's Name' on the RLPB 219 blog.] Christians in Pakistan are living with a continuous threat to their life. When the rule of law collapses in a society infected with intolerance and hate, what is left to restrain evil?

PLEASE PRAY SPECIFICALLY THAT -

* God will cause Sajjad to be acquitted on appeal, and may he deliver both Sajjad and Ruma (with their extended families) from Islamic mischief and vindictiveness. (Psalm 140)

* the Lord of Hosts will send his heavenly forces to restrain and pacify the Muslims and clerics of Gojra so that Gojra's vulnerable Christian Colony (ravaged by a deadly Islamic pogrom in August 2009) will be spared more violence. (Psalm 57:1-3)

* our sovereign, redeeming God will intervene in Pakistan to graciously effect a breakthrough that will halt the decay and reverse the way being taken; may justice and righteousness be established for the sake of the Church and the 'harassed and helpless' Muslim masses who need to hear the gospel. (Matthew 9:36 ESV)

PAKISTAN - FALSE CLAIMS, BLASPHEMY AND INTERPOL

Sajjad Masih (29) and his friend, Ruma Masih, two Christians from Punjab, have been falsely accused of blasphemy. On 13 July Sajjad (detained since December 2011) was sentenced to life in prison, despite a total absence of evidence and a retraction from the complainant who confessed to being coerced into filing a false claim. Ruma now lives in the UK. The actions of the Gojra police and the judgment of the Gojra court were not determined by law, but by belligerent Muslims and clerics in Gojra. First they forced the court to convict Sajjad and then made the police charge Ruma. Pakistan has issued an Interpol Red Notice against Ruma, so she might be arrested in the UK as a fugitive. Please pray for Pakistan and its imperilled Christians.

EGYPT (updating RLPB 218):

There has been another assassination in North Sinai. Christian businessman Magdy Lamei had been kidnapped by Islamic militants in Sheikh Zuwayed on Saturday 6 July. This was the same day a Coptic priest was assassinated in neighbouring al-Arish. Lamei's bound and decapitated body was found dumped in the street on 11 July. He had been an active Christian who ministered in the church and regularly opened his home for prayers. Christians are fleeing from North Sinai.

Every day, during my prayer time, I pray for my family, my colleagues, a few friends, folks on my prayer list for that day, those who have requested special prayer, but there is one group that is often missing from my prayer list – my enemies. Frankly, I’d rather not pray for them. It would be far more comfortable to ignore them, maybe even despise them. Apparently, the disciples had a similar problem.  In His Sermon of the Mount, considered by many as the most important sermon Jesus ever preached, the disciples heard Him quote Leviticus 19:18, “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy’ then add, “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you” (Matthew 5:44). OK, I have very little problem with the outward acts proposed by Jesus – love, bless, do good, but when it comes to the inward, intimate act of prayer, well, as they say, “He stopped preaching and started meddling.”  How can I pray for my enemies, when I don’t even like them, don’t even want to think about them?  Seriously, when someone “spitefully” uses me and “persecutes” me, I’m supposed to pray for them? For me at least, this is a sign of maturing discipleship, and it only happens on my more spiritual days.  But happen, it must. And I must discipline myself to include this more often in my prayer life.  American Newscaster David Brinkley once said, “A successful man is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at him.”

9651011061?profile=original It is only 58 days until Sunday, September  8, 2013. I would like to share with you why Grandparents' Day of Prayer is a significant day for me, if you have missed hearing about it.

I greatly appreciate the legacy passed on in my family as ancestors modeled their walk with the Lord and invested their prayers in my life. In response, God gave me a passion of praying for my grandchildren and for sharing this passion with other grandparents, so they, too, can share the joy and rewards of intercessory pray for their grandchildren.

When I found National Grandparents Day was the second Sunday in September, the thought came to me that it would be a good day to proclaim as Grandparents Day of Prayer. It would be a good time to encourage grandparents to unite in prayer for their grandchildren.

Since our nation and our world are in moral and spiritual decline, we are in a battle for the minds and hearts of our dear grandchildren. The enemy is trying to steal their lives and the plans God has for them, especially the family unit.

However, God values all of us including our grandchildren enough to send his son to die for them. As grandparents, we can stand in the GAP with prayer for them to allow their hearts to be tender and teachable to God's Word and recognize the deception of the world and guard their hearts. It is urgent that we stand in the gap to pray for their spiritual, emotional, and physical protection and their parents so they do not become victims of our culture.

For that reason, I am encouraging you to participate and invite your friends to join in prayer with for grandparents throughout the worldwide on Grandparents Day of Prayer on September 8 in your home or in your church.

Things you can do now:

May God grant you favor in your grandparenting,

Lillian Penner, Prayer Coordinator, lpenner@christiangrandparenting.net

ISLAMIC WRATH FALLS ON THE CHURCH IN EGYPT

Religious Liberty Prayer Bulletin | RLPB 218 | Wed 10 Jul 2013

EGYPT: ISLAMIC WRATH FALLS ON THE CHURCH

by Elizabeth Kendal

On Wednesday 3 July the Egyptian military ousted the country's first democratically elected President, Mohamed Morsi, and placed him under 'house arrest'. Tanks moved into Cairo, the Parliament was dissolved and the Constitution was suspended. Whilst the military ousted Morsi in pursuit of its own interests, it did so under the cover of anti-Morsi protests, all but guaranteeing that Morsi's civilian opponents will suffer the reprisals. No soft target so clearly represents opposition to Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) as the Coptic Church, making it exceptionally vulnerable. The Coptic Pope compounded this vulnerability when he blessed the coup and supported the suspension of the Constitution. On Friday 5 July MB leader Mohamed Badie addressed a gathering of tens of thousands of understandably enraged Islamists outside the Rabaa al-Adweya Mosque in Nasr City, Cairo. He slammed the Coptic Pope, condemned the coup and called on Muslims to rise up and not stop fighting until Morsi was returned to office.

UPPER EGYPT: On Wednesday 3 July Islamists in Minya Governorate attacked the evangelical church in el-Saleh, injuring two. In Delgia village dozens of Christian homes were looted at gunpoint and burned by Muslim rioters chanting anti-Christian slogans. Delgia's Coptic Church of St George was set ablaze. The priest survived only because his Muslim neighbours pulled him out of the inferno and gave him refuge. Most Christians have now fled the area. Further south in Qena, Islamic rioters attempted to attack the main Coptic cathedral but were repelled by the military. The rioters then looted and ransacked Coptic homes and businesses. Most Christians have now fled this area. On Saturday 6 July Christians in the village of Nag Hassan in Luxor Governorate came under attack from a Muslim mob; four people were murdered and three others injured while 16 Coptic homes and businesses were torched. The Church of the Virgin Mary was also attacked; most Christians have now fled this area too.

MEDITERRANEAN COAST: On 3 July the military repelled Muslim rioters who were stoning the Church of Holy Virgin in the coastal resort city of Marsa Matrouh, 240km west of Alexandria. On 9 July gunmen opened fire on the Mar Mina Church in Port Said (at the mouth of the Suez Canal); no casualties were reported. SINAI: On 4 July at least two explosions were heard in the Israeli city of Eilat on the Red Sea. Remnants were found of a Grad rocket believed to have been fired by jihadists in the Sinai, Egypt. On 5 July the military opened fire on Morsi supporters who were demonstrating during Friday prayers in the coastal city of el-Arish, North Sinai, wounding at least 21. Jihadists immediately retaliated, expelling the military and raising the black flag of al-Qaeda. Salafi jihadist group, Salafiyya al Jihadiyya, slammed the 'crime' and announced the formation of a new group, Ansar al Sharia in Egypt, which it said was acquiring weapons and preparing to fight. The next day, gunmen on a motorbike shot dead a Coptic priest, Mena Aboud Sharoben (39), as he was walking through the Masaeed area in el-Arish.

JUST THE BEGINNING: Whilst the military may have ousted an Islamist President, dissolved a Muslim Brotherhood-dominated Parliament and suspended an Islamised Constitution, these actions have actually increased the risk to Egyptian Christians. Military violence - such as the army's firing on pro-Morsi demonstrators in Cairo on Monday 8 July, killing 51 and wounding more than 300 - is only further inflaming the situation. The coup will serve to radicalise many MB supporters, especially as Islamic groups from Tunisia to Somalia are citing the coup as proof that democracy does not work and that Islam can be established only by the bullet not the ballot. Al-Qaeda leader Ayman Zawahiri (an Egyptian) has ominously warned: 'The battle in Egypt is far from over, it has only just begun.'

PLEASE PRAY SPECIFICALLY THAT GOD WILL -

* pour out his Holy Spirit abundantly on the Church in Egypt, so that the fears of Christians may be calmed and so they will trust the Lord for their every need.

'I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.' (Psalm 121:1,2 ESV)

* shield, protect, sustain and deliver all who look to him in faith.

'Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by. I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfils his purpose for me.' (Psalm 57:1,2 ESV)

* use the present troubles to awaken Arabs not merely to the fact that Islam is not the solution, but to the truth that the solution and empowerment for transformation are found in Jesus Christ.

RAMADAN commenced on 9 July and will run through to 7 August. Please pray for Muslims during Ramadan. For resources, visit http://www.30-days.net/

ISLAMIC WRATH FALLS ON THE CHURCH IN EGYPT

Egyptian Islamists are understandably furious that their democratically elected President Morsi has been ousted in a military coup effected under the cover of anti-Morsi protests. The Coptic Church is clearly a soft target amongst the opposition to Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood, making it exceptionally vulnerable to Islamic reprisals. Since the 3 July coup churches have been attacked in the cities of Marsa Matrouh and Port Said on the Mediterranean coast, as well as in al-Arish, North Sinai, where a Coptic priest was assassinated. In Minya and Luxor Governorates, Upper Egypt, many churches have been attacked, four Christians killed and dozens of Christian homes and businesses have been looted and torched by Islamic mobs chanting anti-Christian slogans. Hundreds of Christian families have fled. Please pray for the Church in Egypt.

* MALAYSIA UPDATE

RLPB 217 (3 July 2013) called for prayer against the Administration of the Religion of Islam (Federal Territories) Bill 2013 which would permit the unilateral forced conversion of minors. Praise God: on Friday 5 July, the Cabinet agreed to withdraw the Bill so that it might be reviewed by Cabinet. Groups that have protested the Bill are calling on the government to amend related laws that contain the same wording. Meanwhile, Islamic leaders who maintain that 'there is no need for both parents to consent to their children's conversion if one of the parents has already embraced the Islamic faith' are calling on Muslims to rise up and unite in defence of Islam. Pray that the government will have the courage to protect human rights and implement the law in the face of Islamic challenges.
