This summer, my eleven-year-old granddaughter and her friend were 9651011264?profile=originalhere to participate in a kids’ Drama Camp at our local outdoor theater. Both girls are baptized Christian tweens, at a perfect age for mentoring as they enter into middle school this year. We’ve been doing my Bible study Face-to-Face with Mary and Martha: Sisters in Christ via SKYPE, or in person, for quite a while. We’ve had many discussions where I help them use Scripture from their Bibles to apply to their young lives. They have so many questions and are at a crossroads between not being little girls, but not grownups either. As tweens, they’re soon going to have more freedoms to make decisions—but not the wisdom that comes with maturity.

Every parent has heard the excuse, “But everyone else is doing it.” I remember my parents saying something like, “If everyone jumped off a cliff would you too?” Sadly, today many kids and adults are jumping off the moral and spiritual cliff to fit in with the culture, or they’re afraid to express beliefs that differ from the worldview.

Even children are bullied for supporting America’s president when their accosters usually don’t even understand why they’re reacting so violently. Where do these young bullies learn this reaction? Television, the Internet . . . perhaps parents, grandparents, or even teachers?

I watched an interview of high school kids encouraged by their teachers to ditch school and participate in a protest march. Those kids had no clue why they were marching or what they were protesting! They weren’t trying to change the world; they were being changed by a worldview they didn’t really understand.

We may want to pull the covers over our head and ignore the unrest in the world. But the parting words Jesus gave to His disciples regarding Christians’ place in the world, the Great Commission, reminds us there’s work to do, starting with our children and grandchildren.

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20

However, the last page in the Bible also foretells that the world will always have good and evil.

Let the one who does wrong continue to do wrong; let the vile person continue to be vile; let the one who does right continue to do right; and let the holy person continue to be holy.” Revelations 22:11

We all want our children and grandchildren knowing and doing what’s right and holy, even when their peers encourage them to do wrong and vile acts! Parents and grandparents are the ones responsible for teaching and instilling these virtues. We cannot rely on the schools, and sometimes not even our churches.

We must help them not grow weary or discouraged doing good. Here are some ideas for guiding and mentoring your children, grandchildren, or mentees.

1. Help Them Learn Scripture from Their Own Bible

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Hebrews 4:12 NLT

Teach them to paraphrase if they need to, but God’s Word applies to every area of life in every century (Heb. 13:8). Jesus used Scripture when tempted by Satan in the desert and taught the disciples to pray “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one” (Matt. 6:13). Help them memorize Scriptures to resist temptation. My granddaughter’s friend said her Dad is teaching her Psalm 23 for when she’s afraid.

2. Remind them to Stay Civil and Polite, But Stay Firm in Your Convictions

But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. 1 Peter 3:15-16

Those caught up in the world’s cults, atheism, alternate belief systems or lifestyles, feel compelled to challenge us for our faith in Christ, so our first impulse is to engage in a debate. If you’ve ever tried arguing or reasoning with someone blinded by the world’s belief system, you know it’s usually futile. I mentor my granddaughter whose third grade teacher reprimanded her for sharing Jesus with two girls challenging her for her faith, that her best answer is, “This is what I believe because the Bible (or God or Jesus) tells me so.”

Other times, believers fall into the same trap the serpent used with Eve when someone asks them, “Did God really say…?” Simply say, "Yes He did, and I’ll find the Scripture for you.” Jesus didn’t come to sanctify the world’s ways, He came to save the world from its ways.

3. Remember the World is In Spiritual Darkness, So Let Your Light Shine

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16

The world loves darkness. Yet into this dark world came Jesus, the Light of the world, and He has hidden His light in each believer’s heart. Our light must shine brightly, no flickering. When we enter a room, a social media conversation, a family or friendly gathering, work, play, school, as parents, grandparents, employers, employees, kids . . . wherever life takes us . . . our light shines, even if we’re the only light for Jesus. “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine!” Teach your grandkids that song and sing it with them.

4. Everyone is Not Going to Like You

“If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.” John 15:18-19

We’re living in a lost world loudly anti-God and anti-Christian and influencing the next generation. We can’t be quiet. As Christian parents and grandparents, our job is to help the next generation be world-changers for Christ concerned more about what God thinks about them than what the world thinks. It may be hard for kids to get this point, but they need to be prepared that some people won’t like you for not agreeing to do wrong. They may try to bully, dare, entice, call you names, make you feel bad, but that’s just because you doing the right thing convicts them for doing the wrong thing.

We’ll never have a perfect world until Jesus returns, but as long as we have breath, we're saved to make a difference in the world. Start your children and grandchildren young believing this means them too! Maybe it’s their friends, sports coaches, unsaved relatives…teach them to pray. Here’s a prayer to start with:

Dear Lord, though the world does not know you, I___________ know you, and I pray that you will let the world know that you have sent me as your servant. Help me make you known to a lost world and I will continue to make you known where you put me so that the love you have for me may be in them also. Thank you for sending your Son Jesus to live in my heart. Amen. John 17:25-26 personalized and paraphrased as a prayer.

WHEN PRAYER DIMINISHES

When crises come like a series of category 5 hurricanes driving millions of people from their homes people pray, for a little while. Many of you remember that large numbers of people were driven to their knees in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on 9/11/2001. A close friend of mine led a citywide prayer meeting last week on 9/11. 5 people showed up to pray.

When we see things like this we are tempted to be cynical. And while I am in that number, I must admit that is a wrong response. We should be thrilled that people pray in a crisis. It will be terrible when we come to the place that no one prays even in the face of terror.

What do we do when we see diminishing numbers of people praying? We need to redouble our own praying. And while you are praying, pray for your church and other churches to begin praying as they have never prayed. Who knows how God will answer your prayers? Encourage others to pray as well. Encouragement usually has greater effect than complaining. And, of course, nothing brings about prayer as effectively as prayer.

Morning by Morning, September 19 - "I Shall Not Be Moved"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You're One with the Father, One with the Holy Spirit. Be One within me today, as I entrust my life completely to You -- as best as I can and all by Your grace.  ...

"I keep the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices; my body also rests secure" (Psalm 16:8-9).

Always before me, always encouraging me, strengthening me, inspiring me, and empowering me. You are Emmanuel -- the God who is always with me (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23). And by the abiding Presence of Your Holy Spirit, You're always here within me (Romans 8:9).

That's why my heart is glad and my soul rejoices. That why I don't lose heart and my hope doesn't fail. There's nothing I'll ever face that You've not already faced and nothing I'll ever endure that You've not already endured -- all on my behalf, all because You're for me, all because You love me. "Let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have One who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin" (Hebrews 4:14-15).

Because You're immovable, I can be immovable in You. Because You're unshakeable, I can be unshakable in You. That gives me hope. And that steadies my soul and gives me peace, as live out my journey of faith "looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of (my) faith" (Hebrews 12:2).

With You always before me and Your Spirit always within me, I shall not be moved. "(I) shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream. (I) shall not fear when heat comes, and (my) leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought (I am) not anxious, and (I) do not cease to bear fruit" -- all in the power of Your grace (Jeremiah 17:8). That encourages my heart. That makes my soul rejoice and allows my body to rest secure, with my hope and faith secure in You. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

Please keep us in prayer for a wonderful wedding and time away with family this week. Depending on our schedule, my morning devotionals may not be as regular the rest of this week. Morning by Morning, September 18 - Discernment and Determination

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I'm waiting and listening for Your leading, as I begin my day in the communion of prayer.  ...

"There is a way that seems right to a person, but its end is the way to death" (Proverbs 14:12).

There is a right way, among many alternative ways. But all ways are not the same. And all ways do not have the same end. There is a way that leads to life and there is a way that leads to death. And according to Your Word, the way that leads to death can seem like the right way to us.

We can be deceived. We can be confused. So we need discernment and determination -- discernment to know what's right and determination to do it; discernment to find the way that leads to life and determination to follow it.

So how do I discern the right way that leads to life? ...

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God -- what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God" (Romans 12:2).

Lord, continue to renew my mind every day. Put Your thoughts in my mind; put Your desires in my heart. Align my thoughts with Your thoughts and my ways with Your ways, so I can rightly discern the right way that leads to life. Give me the desire and the power to seek "the mind of Christ" (1 Corinthians 2:16). Humbling myself to seek Your mind -- the mind of Christ rather than the mind of this world -- is the only way that leads to life, for You alone are "the Way, and the Truth, and the Life" (John 14:6). And as I discern it, empower me to do it -- day by day, step by step, decision by decision. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

I pray you will be transformed by the renew of your mind, discerning the will of God for the direction of your life that leads to the fullness of life in Christ every day, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same of meGod bless you, my friend!

Frequently I receive emails from a grandmother asking me to pray for her because of her estrangement from her grandchildren. Her heart is broken, finding it very difficult to deal with the situation, like many 9651030458?profile=originalgrandparents do toda

When we reach the midlife years of our lives, we look forward to becoming grandparents and very excited when our first grandchild is born and the grandchildren that follow. However, today there are many grandparents with broken hearts because they are estranged from their grandchildren for various reasons.

Being estranged from your grandchildren often results in many negative emotions. Sorting out exactly what you are feeling and developing an approach for dealing with your feelings can be vital for your health, both mental and physical. You will feel anguish as long as the separation lasts.

However, God is still answering prayers, often it is not on our timetable, and so we have to ask God for patience to wait until He is ready to answer. Sometimes, we have to wait in His waiting room while He is working in the hearts of our grandchildren and their parents. God’s timing is best.

I have found the Scripture verses in Romans 8:26-28 very helpful when I don’t know how to pray for my grandchildren and their parents. Paul writes, “The Holy Spirit makes intercession for us when we don’t know how to pray.” When I ask the Holy Spirit to make intercession for me according to God’s will, it keeps me from telling God how to answer my prayer, which I love to do. Ask the Holy Spirit to make intercession for your estrangement letting him carry the burden instead of you giving him your agenda.

Very often all we can do is pray, pray and pray, waiting on God to do the work in healing the wounds.

Here are a couple of suggestions for estranged grandparents:

1.    Don't stop trying to keep in touch. Send cards and letters to your grandchildren maintaining the tone of any communication loving but light.

2.    Pray intentionally and regularly for your grandchildren and their parents. If you don’t know how to pray for them sign up to receive my blog regularly and I will send you “31 Scriptures to Pray for your Grandchildren” which you can download without cost and print.

I have found uniting in prayer with other grandparents for my grandchildren is a special blessing for me. It’s a safe place to share my concerns for my grandchildren as they are growing up in our post-Christian culture. It comforts me to know the other grandparents in my group are also praying for my grandchildren

Christian Grandparenting Network now has many Grandparents@Prayer (G@P) intercessory groups meeting in the U.S., Philippines, Canada and South Africa, in retirement Centers, schools, churches, and homes.  We would like to see the number of G@P groups grow. Some of the groups meet weekly, some twice a month or once a month, whatever the group desires.

I want to challenge you to ask God whom He would like you to ask to pray with you for each other’s grandchildren. Ask your friends, church senior group, neighbors, family members or whomever. My group started with 2 of us for several months but has grown to 12.

Prayer

Dear Father, I pray that you will give the estranged grandparents wisdom how to approach their separation from their grandchildren.

I pray your Holy Spirit will make intercession for them allowing you

to carry out your agenda in your timing for their healing.

Encourage them and give them peace as they intentionally pray

and patiently wait for the parents to allow them

to be a part of their lives again.

In Jesus’ name. Amen

PRAY FOR EVERYONE

God calls to us to pray for everyone. 1 Timothy 2:1 reads,

“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people.”

This is one of those scriptures that you have to stop and ask how we do that. Is this scripture calling us to pray prayers like, “God save the whole world. Amen”? I believe God is urging this on us so we will make a legitimate effort to pray individually for as many people as possible. Everyone needs prayer. This of course leaves us with the same problem. How do we do that?

There are a number of things we can work on as we seek to pray for everyone.

I wrote earlier about assigning leaders to pray for everyone listed on a church roll. I think this is a good start.

Paul’s one specific application of this verse was to pray for kings and all who are in authority. This too needs to be an organized effort. Most of you know the name of your local mayer, the governor of your state, and the President or Prime Minister of your country. But there are hundreds of others who fall into this category whose names we do not know. I couldn’t start to list the names of those serving in our State Assembly. These could easily be looked-up and printed off encouraging church members to pray for them.

In the past I have encouraged prayer-walking. Prayer-walking is a great way to pray for your block, your whole neighborhood. An organized effort could pray for an entire town, even a city.

Finally, let me suggest a kind of praying that I mention often which takes no planning, organization, or preparation. Can you begin praying for everyone around you wherever you are, in a restaurant, at work, in a store, at school? Many of us wonder what we would pray for complete strangers. I have three suggestions and a fourth that is more important than the others.

Use the word BLESS as an an acrostic memory tool.

BODY, Pray for a person’s physical needs.

LABOR, Pray for someone’s work and income. I fear my prayer for this is sometimes selfish. I pray for the clerk at the bank or at the Post Office to work efficiently. I still think this is good.

EMOTIONS, I pray for people to hunger for God. And I pray for ultimate peace in the person’s life.

SOCIAL, Pray for God to intervene in a person’s relationships.

SPIRITUAL, Pray for God to draw that person to Himself.

Another tool may not be quite as easy to remember has all Bs.

BURDEN, Father, lift that woman’s burden.

BITTERNESS, Lord, wash the bitterness out of that man’s heart.

BLINDNESS, Open that person’s eyes to see spiritual reality.

BONDAGE, Lord, free that man from attitudes, addictions, and spiritual forces that keep him from You.

My next suggestion takes less time. Simply pray for God to meet a person’s need. Maybe pray for God to meet the deepest need in someone’s life.

These are all aids for people to get started praying like this. And after many years of trying to do this, I still use them. However, I think it is more important to be open for the Holy Spirit to impress something on you to pray for a person. The strangest things can come into my mind as I am glancing over a group of people trying to avoid staring rudely at any them. I have prayed things like, “Father, I ask you to heal that person of cancer.” “Rescue her child from sin.” “Father, comfort her in the midst of divorce.” Now to be honest, I have never had the courage to go up to someone and ask, “Are you going through a divorce right now.” I am not trying to prove my spiritual acuity. I was talking to my Heavenly Father. And I can assure you that I have been drawn nearer to Him as I prayed things that came into my mind.

The last thing listed in 2 Timothy 2:1 is crucial. Thanksgiving ought to be made for everyone. I try occasionally to spend a whole day thanking God. And this includes praying for people around me. I begin each prayer with, “Thank You, Father. . .” I thank God that He is already at work in the life of that person He has called me to pray for. I thank Him for everything I can think of for everyone around me. I am uplifted by this. And I am convinced that others are blessed as I give thanks.

Morning by Morning, September 15 - Healing Hope in the Times of the "Bread of Adversity" and "Water of Affliction"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit -- You are One God and You are my God. I welcome You into the moments of my day and embrace Your presence to help me walk in Your ways.  ...

"Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you; therefore He will rise up to show mercy to you. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for Him. Truly, O people in Zion, inhabitants of Jerusalem, you shall weep no more. He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry; when He hears it, He will answer you. Though the Lord may give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide himself any more, but your eyes shall see your Teacher. And when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left, your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it'" (Isaiah 30:18-21).

In these devastating days of turmoil and tribulation, many wonder where's God. Many wonder whether we are under the judgment of God or spiritual attack of our enemy. But even under judgment, Your heart is always that we would return to You, to call on Your name, to humble ourselves in Your sight, that You may lift us up. Even if we eat the bread of affliction or drink the water of affliction, You are ready to hear and ready to answer the who looks to You, who waits for You, who returns to You.

Personally or as a people, You're always calling us to turn to You -- if we have sinned, You call us to repent; if we are under siege, You call us to cry out. Regardless of whether we are under judgment or under attack, the answer is the same -- to call on the name of the Lord our God in faith and trust, in repentance and obedience, with hope in our hearts, resting in the promises of Your Word. "In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength" (v. 15). No matter what we endure and no matter why we are enduring it, You will answer the one who turns to You "on the day when the Lord binds up the injuries of His people, and heals the wounds inflicted by His blow" (v. 26).

Lord, let us turn to You today -- in our hearts and on behalf of our land. Rather than the bread of adversity, may we eat of the Bread of Life (John 6:35). Rather than the water of affliction, may we drink deeply from the Water of Life (John 7:38-39). May even adversity and affliction lead to repentance and revival in our hearts and in our land. "If My people who are called by My name humble themselves, pray, seek My face, and turn form their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land" (2 Chronicles 7:14). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Morning by Morning, September 14 - No Need for Troubled Hearts Here

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Help me begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with Your Holy Spirit.  ...

"The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let it be afraid" (John 14:26-27 NKJV).

Thank You for Your Holy Spirit -- the One who comes from our Father in the power and the presence of Your name to help us and comfort us and remind us that You're always with us. You never leave us nor forsake us, so we never have to be afraid. You keep filling us with Your peace, and Your perfect love keeps casting out all fear (1 John 4:18).

There's no need for troubled hearts here -- here in Your peace, here in Your presence, here in the so-slip grip of Your grace. I'm reminded of what David came to know in his life-long journey with You through every hardship and injustice, through every heart-breaking disappointment -- whether in himself or the world around him or even in You at times. Through it all, his heart continued to turn to You in trusting faith and the steadfast peace that only You can provide, saying for all to hear throughout all generations, "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.... Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me" (Psalm 23:1-4 NKJV).

Lord, through it all, let it be so. Let it be well with my soul, as You keep me close and steady in Your peace. "You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You" (Isaiah 26:3 NKJV). There's no need for troubled hearts here. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Morning by Morning, September 13 - "Unprecedented"

Morning by Morning, September 13 - "Unprecedented"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Put Your thoughts in my mind and Your desires in my heart. Make me more like You today.  ...

"For I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to win obedience from the Gentiles, by word and deed, by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God, so that from Jerusalem and as far around as Illyricum I have fully proclaimed the good news of Christ. Thus I make it my ambition to proclaim the good news, not where Christ has already been named, so that I do not build on someone else's foundation, but as it is written, 'Those who have never been told of Him shall see, and those who have never heard of Him shall understand'" (Romans 15:18-21).

As I listen for the leading of Your Spirit this morning, I hear in my heart the word "Unprecedented."  ...

Lord, what are You speaking to me and to Your church?  ...

I believe I hear You saying in my heart, "These are unprecedented times. These are times -- now and in the days to come -- like nothing ever seen or heard. And though the struggles around you and the struggles within you may be unprecedented, so are the opportunities. These are unprecedented times full of unprecedented opportunities to share the love of God in Jesus Christ -- "by word and deed, by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God." Fully proclaim the good news of My grace. Hearts are open to hear My hope and receive My love by the power of My grace."  ...

Yes, Lord. May we be ambassadors of hope, by our words and by our deeds, reaching out to the hurting and the lost in every way You would express Your hope through us as the body of Christ, fully proclaiming the good news of Christ, everywhere we are and in every opportunity we have. Let those who have never been told of You come to see You; and let those who have never heard of You come to understand You -- that You are God and You are love and You are here. Let there be a great harvest of the kingdom of God, now and in the days to come, like nothing ever seen or heard, in these unprecedented times (Matthew 13:39).

"And this good news of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the world, as a testimony to all the nations; and then the end will come" (Matthew 24:14). Lord, let it be so -- here in my heart, here in my land, and to the ends of the earth in our generation. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

I pray you would experience the unprecedented power of God's Spirit moving in your heart and through your life to display the love and grace of God and the good news of Christ in these unprecedented times, that we may see an unprecedented harvest of God's kingdom in our generation, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same of meGod bless you, my friend!

PTAP: City Focus: Dhaid, UAE

Dhaid is an oasis town in the UAE.  It is what a typical city might look like in the United Arab Emirates if oil wealth had not radically changed the country.  This city does not boast any massive skyscrapers like its neighbors Dubai and Abu Dhabi, but is a desert city with some agriculture and many date palms.

Throughout history, the nomadic Bedouin tribes would pass through Dhaid because there was fresh drinking water and beautiful oases. Desert cities like this need life-giving water. Because of city growth and the expansion of agriculture, much of the ground water is drying up.

In the past, this was a political center for certain Bedouin tribes.  The Kitbi tribe is prominent in Dhaid.  This is the tribe of Fatima Mubarak al-Kitbi, the "Mother of the Emirates," the third wife of the founder of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed.

The city is expanding and more industry is being developed here.  However, some of the locals are still Bedouin in their thinking and like to be in the desert with their camels.

Prayer Points:
  1. Pray that the Lord of the Harvest, Jesus Christ, will send workers into Dhaid and the surrounding area to be witnesses for Him.
  2. Jesus Christ is the living water and the bread of life.  Pray that Emiratis in Dhaid will come to Him as the giver of living water and eternal life and be satisfied in Him alone.
  3. Pray that the Kitbi tribe would come to know the Lord Jesus and use its influence to lead others into His Kingdom.  Pray that they would be known as an Emirati tribe that follows Jesus Christ!

Morning by Morning, September 12 -  From Humility to Hope

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I lift my eyes up to the hills -- up to You -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God -- for You are my Help and my Hope.  ...

"Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.... Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up" (James 4:8-10 NKJV).

As we battle the storms, as we struggle to survive, as we press on and persevere, You remind us to draw near to You. You remind us to humble ourselves before You, so You can lift us up. You remind us to remember You. Because apart from You, we can do nothing (John 15:5).

To humble ourselves is to willingly choose to be desperately dependent upon You alone. It's the opposite of pride, which says I can do all things in my power, in my wisdom, with my resources. Pride says, "I will survive; I will thrive; I will restore; I will rebuild -- all in my way, all I as I will, all by myself." Humility says, "I need You, Lord; I'm desperate for You; apart from You, I can do nothing; and I praise You, that I never have to be apart from You, for You are my Help and my Hope."

Pride, in this sense, is an unholy independence from You, manifested in rebellion from Your presence and rejection of Your ways. But humility, in this sense, is a healthy, reverential fear of the Lord to honor You, embrace You, and desperately depend upon You to be our provision and protection, our loving Father who always knows what's best and who is always near and always ready to help through whatever we endure. So Lord, slay our pride and give us humble hearts, for "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble" (James 4:6 NKJV).

It's a heart of humility that will fill our hearts with hope. And hope is what we need. Hope in You alone is what we need. And hope is what we will have if we humble our hearts to hope in You. "Now may the God of hope fill (us) with all joy and peace in believing, that (we) may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit" (Romans 15:13 NKJV). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

ARE YOU DISTURBED?

I doubt seriously if I am the only person to be confused and disturbed about things we see around us. I am horrified by the bizarre extremes of the sexual revolution being forced down our throats. At the same time those who would to some extent agree about that are proclaiming America first, which sounds to me like selfishness encoded in national policy. I am aware this will offend some whom I love. But the Bible is clear about this. God is a globalist. “For God so loved the world.” Are you in tune with God? Yet, many who agree that we ought to be concerned about developing countries, or even for the disadvantaged around us, demand that we also support every wild sexual perversion. They assume suggesting that these things are immoral or even unhealthy violates someone’s civil rights.

I recently read The Benedict Option. And I recommend that you read it. While I do not agree with everything Rod Dreher said in the book, I do believe his major premise is right. We have lost the culture War, and we need to focus on being a holy church in spite of it.

While I believe this is true it does not make me less confused or disturbed. What is the will of God for us in these days? The most peace I've gotten as I have prayed about this came last week as I read 2 Timothy in my devotional time. Does this passage not clearly describe what we see all around us?

2 Timothy 3:1-5

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

Let me suggest some obedient responses to the world where God has posted us to serve Him in these days. We must carry out these things together.

Believe

We need to Believe the Bible in a world that rejects it. We need to submit to the authority of God and His word over us even when we do not understand. You are being bombarded by the notions of our society just like everyone else. The world and the flesh and the devil are planting their values in you. And there are some things that you believe that are wrong because the times in which you live have influenced you. Only God's word can deliver you from contemporary misinformation. We need to hold to it as an anchor for our lives even when we are not able in our own strength to persuade others.

Live

1 Peter 2:12 calls us to live godly lives before the world around us.

“Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they may accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.”

This will mean being honest even if it costs you your job. This means being godly and generous even though others will take advantage of you. What else might this mean in your life?

Love

The most important expression of godliness in our lives is love. I am not talking about sentimentality. We need the ultimate absolutely selfless agape love set out in 1 Corinthians 13, demonstrated in the life of Jesus, and striven for by the early church. We will need to love, minister to and forgive one another, our neighbors and even our enemies.

Teach

These are crucial days for us to teach sound doctrine to the church. And we need to teach anyone who will listen, although again in 2nd Timothy Paul says in the last days people will not endure sound doctrine. In 2 Timothy 2:25,26 Paul speaks of teaching even those who would oppose a godly teacher.

“Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will”

Stand

Even in these days when it seems we have lost the culture war, we need to do our best to stand against wickedness, to stand for righteousness, justice godliness, and faith. There may be times where this will be impossible. It would have been a death sentence to publicly oppose the Nuremberg racial laws in Berlin in 1942. But there were some who believed they needed to do their best to fight evil, even though it would cost them their lives.

There is always hope that God will turn things around. Recently my granddaughter invited me to read The Mysterious Benedict Society. The children who are the heroes in the story sneak into an institute that is getting ready to take over the world by overwhelming all who “love the truth.” At one point it seems to them that they themselves cannot resist the barrage of untruth thrown at them. In that time they receive a message from those supporting them from outside saying, “What has been lost may yet be found. Have hope.” With God there's always hope.

And most important, Pray.

Prayer is more crucial in these days than it has ever been in all of history. Who knows if God will not delay this ultimate destiny by sending revival in nations all across the earth, possibly one final time before the end. Even if He does not, our prayers may bring hundreds of thousands to Christ in the midst of tribulation. Many will stand against that old serpent the devil by the word of our testimony, by the blood of the Lamb, and who through our prayers will not love our lives so much as to shrink from death. (Revelation 12:11)

Book Review: Simple Prayer (Charlie Dawes)

"My name's Andrew, and I'm a list-prayer."  OK, list praying is not really an addiction (though some of the more mystical among us might make us feel like we need to confess it).  God wired many intercessors - including me - this way.  But most of us would admit that there are times when the lists get exhausting. We tire ourselves out with our own words, and our sense of God's nearness dims as we concentrate on the details of our lists.

Enter a book like "Simple Prayer".  By looking at some of the brief, simple prayers in Scripture, Charlie Dawes reminds us that it's not about our words as much as it is about connecting our hearts with God.  And he shows a way to do this that is as elegant as it is simple.

9651030080?profile=originalBeginning with the prayer that has come to be known as the "Jesus Prayer" ("Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner"), Dawes leads the reader through several of Scripture's simple prayers and shows us how these prayers connect with the heart of God.  Simple prayers like, "Just say the word," uttered by a Roman centurion who expressed both his faith and his petition in these four simple words.  Simple prayers like, "Help me overcome my unbelief," the desperate cry of a father for strengthening of his faith and healing of his son.  Simple prayers like, "Father, forgive them," prayed by our Savior on behalf of those who tortured and killed him.

Simple prayers like these are one way we can connect with God throughout the day, a way to pray without ceasing. There is a time for striving in prayer, but simple prayers remind us that God does not hear us because of our striving but because he is the God who hears.

I'm not one for prayer formulas, and I know that my primary mode of prayer will always be the list-intercession type. But knowing that I can connect with God simply and Scripturally is opening a new vista for me in prayer.  The prayers studied in this book make me excited to search the Scriptures for other examples of simple ways to connect with God's heart.

Simple Prayer was published by Intervarsity Press  in 2017.  You can find it at ivpress.com/simple-prayer.

"For I," declares the Lord, "will be a wall of fire around her, and I will be the glory in her midst."  - Zechariah 2:5

Technology now permeates every aspect of our lives, from our phones to our programmable refrigerators.  At the touch of a button, orders are placed, documents sent and retrieved, and, sadly, unsuspecting children are seduced. Is the internet destroying life as we know it?
Here is a prophetic perspective on technology, especially as it relates to your family.

Morning by Morning, September 7 - Hearts Filled with Faith, Mouths Filled with Praise Through It All

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Put Your thoughts in my mind and Your desires in my heart. Make me more like You today.  ...

"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you" (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

This morning when I looked to see what happened last night with Hurricane Irma, marching through the Caribbean on its way to Florida, the first thing I saw was the proclamation of prayer and praise from the Governor of Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rossello. He was boldly declaring to the world for all to hear, "We would like to start out thanking the Almighty! Our prayers were answered!" The storms came but Your people were not overcome.

Yes, Lord! Praise You, Lord! In the midst of the storm, we join with all who are choosing to keep turning to You and calling on Your name to be our Hope and Help through whatever comes -- rejoicing always, praying without ceasing, giving thanks to the Almighty in all circumstances. This steadfast spirit of unquenchable hope and persevering faith is "the will of God in Christ Jesus" for all who trust You to be with us through it all (v. 18).

This is the buoyant hope, bound together with fearless faith, that inspires us and empowers us to overcome no matter what challenges we face in this broken, fallen world that's not yet redeemed and restored. As You said, "In this world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world!" (John 16:33 NKJV)

Just as Your Word reminds us, "Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I Am the Lord your God.... You are precious in My sight, and honored, and I love you" (Isaiah 43:1-4). May Your Spirit keep filling our hearts with faith and our mouths with praise, thanking You for being with us through whatever comes and all You empower us to overcome. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

I pray that by the power of God's grace your heart is filled with faith and your mouth is filled with praise through every storm you ever endure -- rejoicing always, praying without ceasing, giving thanks in every circumstance, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same of meGod bless you, my friend!

A religious leader who is becoming more and more uncomfortable with his own religion is asking questions to a believer and reading the Book. Ask that he will be given clear understanding and will find the peace that he is seeking. May many others who are under his care join him in his journey.
A new believer struggles with depression. Please pray that she will find much joy in her new relationship with Jesus, that this joy will be noticed by her friends and family so that it brings much glory to the Father and draws others into relationship with Him.
Pray that individual local believers will find each other and become His church in a way that will multiply in their cultural context. Agree that no plan of the enemy will hinder the progress of His Kingdom.
Give praise for the Father's work in the lives of those He is drawing to Himself, and for His faithful patience and sovereign timing. Ask that believers will also have faithfulness and patience in sharing, sensitivity and responsiveness to opportunities, and bear fruit as they abide in Him.
