Morning by Morning, October 31 - Revolution of Reformation

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are the King of kings and Lord of lords. I bow low and lift You high, as I begin my day, both reverently and intimately, in the Presence of my King in the communion of prayer with You -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God.  ...

"For I am not ashamed of the Gospel; it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith, to the Jew first and also to the Gentile. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed through faith for faith; as it is written, 'The one who is righteous will live by faith'" (Romans 1:16-17).

Today marks the 500th anniversary of the Reformation -- the day the Catholic Monk, Martin Luther, nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to the door of the All Saints' Church in Wittenberg, Germany. It set off a revolution of reformation against many practices and doctrines that had crept into the teachings and traditions of the Roman Catholic Church. Luther was especially and passionately incensed against the spiritually coerced practice of requiring "indulgences" as payment to the church for the salvation of souls being purged in the fires of "purgatory." It's said that perhaps the straw that broke the camel's back for Luther was the inflammatory saying of Fr. Johann Tetzel, the Papal representative tasked with raising money from the people for building the basilica of St. Peter in Rome, "As soon as the coin in the coffer rings, the soul from purgatory springs!"

It's not our coins but our hearts, turned to you in faith alone that determines our eternal destiny. And as I understand Your Word, there is no "purgatory," for "we are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5:8). Thank You, Lord Jesus, that You have paid the penalty for my sins that I am forever cleansed of all unrighteousness through the repentance of my heart (1 John 1:9 and 2:2; Romans 5:8; Isaiah 53:5; Hebrews 7:7). When we depart this earthly realm in faith, we are with You in Your heavenly realm forever (Philippians 1:23; John 3:16). Though our works in this world may tested in the fire, we never will because of Your mercy and grace by the sacrifice and power of Your love for us (1 Corinthians 3:12-17; 1 John 4:10). "Through Him God was pleased to reconcile to Himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of His cross" (Colossians 1:20).

Come, Holy Spirit. Awaken a revolution of reformation in my soul today. Cleanse my sins in the blood of Christ. Purify my heart in Your holy fire. Let my soul spring forth, filled with Your Spirit, to turn "(my) world upside down" in the name of Jesus for the glory of God and the salvation and sanctification of souls by faith alone (Acts 17:6). "For by grace (we) have been saved through faith, and this is not (our) own doing; it is the gift of God -- not the result of works, so that no one may boast" (Ephesians 2:8). I "set all (my) hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring (me) when He is revealed" (1 Peter 1:13). As I embrace Your free gift of grace, stir up my heart to share the hope and good news of this glorious Gospel through my life today (1 Peter 3:15)! In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

ARE YOU LISTENING

Like love, meaningful prayer is initiated by God. Romans 8:26 admits that we don't know what to pray for as we ought. I certainly do not object to praying for what you want. But faith in God at least leads to the realization that what God wants for me is better, more fulfilling, and more satisfying than what I want.

So how do we listen in prayer? There is of course an attitude of listening in prayer that humbly comes to God expecting him to impress something on you. And I have occasionally experienced that in my life. But as we grow really serious about listening to God we will come to the place that we want to meditate. Now biblical meditation is not anything like Eastern meditation or what was called in the 1960s Transcendental Meditation. In Eastern meditation you repeat over and over again a mantra, a word that is nonsense to you because it comes from a language you probably do not speak. And you completely empty your mind of anything. In Christian meditation we fill our mind with truth. We focus on what God is saying. That has great depth of meaning. This can be about as relaxing as a wrestling match. But its fruit is nourishing and satisfying.

The most important spiritual meditation is on the word of God. If you want God to speak to you, read his word. If you want God to speak to you, study and meditate on God's word. I've often told people that you can meditate on facets of the character of God. For instance you might spend a whole day meditating on all the ways that God shows His infinite love to you. However, I think the best way to do this is to memorize a verse or even an entire passage that reveals a part of God's character. And God will speak to you whatever scripture you memorize and spend extended time thinking about.

The final way of listening to God that I want to show you here is to pray in a group. Listen to other people praying and see if you're not impressed that God is speaking to you in their prayers.

Morning by Morning, October 25 - Holy Hunger

Morning by Morning, October 25 - Holy Hunger

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I lift my eyes and open my heart to welcome Your Word and Your Spirit into me and every moment of my day.  ...

"Remember the long way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, in order to humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep His commandments. He humbled you by letting you hunger, then by feeding you with manna, with which neither you nor your ancestors were acquainted, in order to make you understand that one does not live by bread alone, but qby every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord" (Deuteronomy 8:2-3).

Give me a holy hunger. Give me a hunger for Your Word and for Your Spirit, for Your promises and for Your presence. Rather than being filled up in a moment with the food that will never satisfy me, give me the grace to wait for the "manna" that only You can provide. Let the delays of "the long way" make me hungrier still for the only One who ever satisfy the longing of my soul.

As You humble my heart with this holy hunger, as You guide my steps along the long and narrow way that leads to life in You, give me persevering faith to believe You're using it all to make me more like You each day, to conform me into the image of the Son of God (Romans 8:29). The journey will be worth it.

Just as You led Israel on her journey, so You're leading me to on my journey to the place You've prepared for me all along. "For the Lord (my) God is bringing (me) into a good land ... where (I) will lack nothing.... (I) shall eat (my) fill and bless the Lord (my) God for the good land that He has given (me)!" (Deuteronomy 8:7-10)

As You have said to all who would choose to humble themselves and follow You, "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled" (Matthew 5:6). In the power of Your grace, give me that holy hunger and righteous thirst for You today. "'Come,' my heart says, 'seek His face!' Your face, Lord, do I seek" (Psalm 27:8). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

I pray you'll hunger and thirst for the One who longs to fill you with His Word and His Spirit to make you more like Him each day, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same of meGod bless you, my friend!

Prayer Requests - October 25, 2017
PTAP is joining WIN1040 (win1040.com) this month in praying for unreached countries of the world. October 25 is the day to pray for Oman. Let's continue to lift up Oman with thousands of people around the world that God would build the local church there.

Praise Report
Praise God that the government of Oman wants to see more Omanis join the work force and is trying to help educate and employ them to be successful (The Bible, Psalm 111:6). ...

Prayer Request
Pray for more Omanis to be willing to work in the low and mid-level job positions. These are not as attractive but are key to the countries growth (The Bible, Proverbs 14:23).

Transformational Prayer
Pray for the Omani people to be transformed from a proud people blessed by oil wealth to those humbly seeking to find Jesus (The Bible, Matthew 19:26).

Call to Salvation
Pray that the very few believers in the Lord Jesus will not be ashamed of the Gospel but will tell their families and friends about His saving power. (The Bible, Romans 1:16).

Continue to Pray for Sohar
In fact, earlier this month, you received prayer points about Sohar--a city in Oman. Please continue to pray for Sohar as you watch the following video.

Morning by Morning, October 24 - Seeing with the Eyes of Heaven

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I welcome You into my heart and every moment of my day.  ...

"The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, 'The Lord is with you, you mighty warrior'" (Judges 6:16).

Gideon saw himself with the eyes of his circumstances, but You saw him with the eyes of heaven (v. 11-13). Gideon spoke out of his pain and disappointment and fear, but You spoke to him with words of his calling and identity and destiny. Gideon wanted to murmur and complain about all that You weren't doing, but You came to commission him and empower him to go be a part of what You were doing. And when Gideon was afraid he could never fulfill Your calling and plans for his life and Your people all on his own and all in his power, You assured him he would never have to:  "Go in this might of yours and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian; I hereby commission you.... I will be with you" (Judges 6:14-16).

You allowed Gideon to give ask his questions, to give voice to his concerns, and express his doubts. You even allowed him to set out a "fleece" to test the faithfulness of Your promises in all of his doubts and fears (v. 36-40). But at the same time, even in the midst of Gideon's timidity and uncertainty, You gave him courage and faith, as You inspired him and empowered him. And when the time came for him to step out in faith and move forward in obedience, You possessed him with Your Spirit:  "The Spirit of the Lord took possession of Gideon!" (v. 34)

You kept speaking to his spirit and confronting his fears each step of the way along the path of his destiny. And "he worshipped" You in response to Your guidance and hope, with Your assurance of Your presence through every he would face (v. 7:15). You gave him great victories for himself and for his people, fulfilling the promise of Your word (v. 8:28).

Gideon was no saint, and he still struggled with temptations and sin, even in the light of all You had done (v. 8:22-27). Yet in Your mercy and love, for him and his people, You moved mightily on their behalf. "The land had rest forty years in the days of Gideon" (v. 8:28).

Lord, You know my struggles with temptations and sin. You know the times my doubts and fears try to hold me back from all You've created me to be and commissioned me to do. So I'm forever in need of my Savior. I'm forever in need of Your mercy and love. I'm forever in need of Your Spirit to possess me and inspire me and empower me. It's only in You that I can know my identity and fulfill my destiny.

So I'm forever thankful that I am in You and You are in me (John 14:20 and 17:21; Romans 8:9-11). And I'm forever thankful that Your Spirit possesses me to see You and myself with the eyes of heaven -- "so that, with the eyes of (my) heart enlightened, (I) may know what is the hope to which (You) have called (me)" (Ephesians 1:18). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

I pray you'll see with the eyes of heaven, as the Spirit of the Lord possesses you and empowers you to know your identity and fulfill your destiny in Christ, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same of meGod bless you, my friend!

Morning by Morning, October 23 - My God is With Me and My God is For Me!

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I speak out Your name and listen for Your voice.  ...

"What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? ... Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? ... Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, no height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord!" (Romans 8:31-39 NKJV)

You are with me. And You're always for me. You're fighting for me in ways I don't always see, walking with me in ways I don't always feel, leading me in ways I don't always know -- at least not at the time. But when I look back, I see Your steps and I see Your hand -- at work to bring my walk into line with Your will. And Your will for me, Your plans for me, they are always for my good, never for my harm, lining up my heart with Your hope and my faith with Your future that You're always working together for me because I love and I'm called according to Your purpose (Jeremiah 29:11; Romans 8:28).

So I will trust You.  I will seek to follow You -- to "follow in (Your) steps" and to walk in Your ways (1 Peter 2:21). There's no temptation I'll face today, no challenge I'll encounter today, no step I'll take today that You've not already faced and overcome before me and that You're not also facing and overcoming with me. "This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for He faced all of the same testings we do, yet He did not sin" (Hebrews 4:15 NLT).

If God is with me, who can be against me? "This I know, that God is for me. In God, whose word I praise, in the Lord, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I am not afraid. What can a mere mortal do to me? ... For You have delivered my soul from death, and my feet from falling, so that I may walk before God in the light of life!" (Psalm 56:9-13) In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

I pray you'll boldly face and faithfully overcome every challenge along the path of your steps today, knowing our God is with you and our God is for you, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same of meGod bless you, my friend!

A Pastor Appreciation Prayer

October is Pastor Appreciation Month.  As we Remember those . . .  who have spoken the word of God” (Hebrews 13:7), I like to share a long-ago newspaper-clipped “Prayer for my Pastor” which I assume is anonymous.  I have used it many times.  “Dear God, bless my pastor today. Make him too big to be little; too wise to be foolish; too holy to be selfish; too spiritual to be worldly; too tall to get a chip on his shoulder; too dedicated to swerve; too zealous to be idle; too cultured to be course; too happy to be morbid. Save him from the love of big words, the fear of carnal people, the tedium of too many announcements. Deliver him from the rut of running overtime, the pit of pointless preaching, the evil of emotionless messages. Strengthen him when the tempter would lure him into sins shallow or deep; when he is the target of tongues whetted to a severe sharpness. Empower him with the Spirit of Pentecost to make him strong in the pulpit; with the Spirit of Christ to make him steadfast in weakness. Keep him from toning down the spiritual messages to please the worldly; from trimming down his sermons into sermonettes; from talking down to his congregation in display of conceited sophistication. Give him wisdom to wait when he does not know which way to turn; grace to begin when he does not know who will follow; courage to lead when he knows he’s right. Fill him with unction every Sunday; enthusiasm every Monday; and with the Holy Spirit every day. And help me to not discuss his faults with anyone but You, O Lord.  Amen.”

PTAP: City Focus - Sohar, Oman

Sohar is the largest city in the north of Oman.

History records that the Bishop of Sohar was one of the delegates at the Council of Nicaea in AD 325.  At this council, the deity of Jesus Christ was affirmed.

In the past, Sohar served as a port and the capital of Oman. With one of the largest ports in the country now, the Omani government is investing in this area to strengthen the economy by looking to other industries besides oil.  Copper has been mined here for years and there is a growing steel and aluminum industry.  Any development brings jobs, expatriates, larger malls, hospitals and universities. This is all part of Sohar's growth.

Many Omanis love to claim that Sinbad the Sailor was born here.  But other cities claim him as well.

Prayer points:

- Pray that as Sohar grows in importance, the gospel would also grow and spread throughout the whole city (Col 1:6).

- Pray that God would build his church in Sohar among the Omani people and that the gates of hell will not prevail against it (Matt 16:18).  Pray that there would be a church just like in the days of the Bishop of Sohar.

- Pray that with more expats coming to Sohar, pray to the Lord of the Harvest to send more workers.

Morning by Morning, October 20 -- The Kingdoms of This Word Become the Kingdoms of My God

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are the Good Shepherd, and Your sheep hear Your voice. Speak to my spirit, my Shepherd, as I begin my day centered in You, embraced by my Father, listening for the leading of Your Holy Spirit.  ...

"Then the seventh angel sounded:  And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, 'The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!' And the twenty-four elders who sat before God on their thrones fell on their faces and worshiped God, saying:  "We give You thanks, O Lord God Almighty, the One who is and who was and who is to come, because You have taken Your great power and reigned!" (Revelation 11:15-17 NKJV)

There will come a day when You set all things right -- a day of "restoration of all things" (Acts 3:21). "We, according to (Your) promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells" (2 Peter 3:13). On that day, with all the "loud voices in heaven" we will proclaim with hearts full of joy and praise the ultimate fulfillment of what You have promised -- "The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ!"

But every day between this day and that day to come, let Your kingdom come into my world as Your kingdom comes into my heart. Change my world today as You change my heart today. "For the kingdom of God is ... righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit" (Romans 14:17). "For indeed, the kingdom of God is within (us)!" (Luke 17:21)

Holy Spirit of God, fill me afresh today (Ephesians 5:18). Fill me with Your "righteousness and peace and joy" -- right with God, right with others, right within myself; at peace with God, at peace with others, at peace within myself; and full of joy!  "Restore unto me the joy of Your salvation" as You renew a right spirit within me and change my world around me because Your Spirit arises and shines through me! (Psalm 51:12; Isaiah 60:1) Let the kingdoms of my world become the kingdoms of my God and my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, today! In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

I pray the kingdoms of your world will become the kingdoms of God, as the King of kings and Lord of lords rules and reigns in your heart by His Spirit with His righteousness and peace and joy today, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same of meGod bless you, my friend!

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Speak to my spirit and guide my steps in the way of life and truth in You today.  ...

"Bondservants, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ; not with eye-service, as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, with good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men, knowing that whatever good anyone does, he will receive the same from the Lord, whether he is slave or free. And you, masters, do the same things to them, giving up threatening; knowing that your own Master also is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him" (Ephesians 6:5-9 NKJV).

You're my Master and my Maker. You're my Heavenly Father and my Best Friend. You're the Lover of my soul and the Lord of my life. You are my "All in All" (1 Corinthians 15:28).

Out of my relationship with You, You call me into right relationship with others. And no matter the nature of those relationships -- husband and wife, children and parents, masters and slaves -- Your Spirit and Your Word is always reminding me and always leading me to keep You in the center of them all (Ephesians 5:21-6:9).

Whatever I do in every relationship I have, You invite me and empower me to do all things "as to the Lord," to do all things with the right motive "in sincerity of heart, as to Christ," and to do all things -- even in the freedom of all Your mercy and grace -- as a "bondservant of Christ." For it's only in Your will that I am free. It's only in keeping You at the center of all I am and all I do in every relationship I have that I will be fulfilled and fully alive -- "made alive in Christ" (1 Corinthians 15:22). By the mercy of Your grace, lead me and empower me to live like that today. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

I pray Jesus Christ will be at the center of all you are and all you do, fulfilled and fully alive in Him in every relationship of your life, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same of meGod bless you, my friend!

Morning by Morning, October 18 - Enemies of Our Souls Crushed Under Our Feet!

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Speak to my heart, as I listen for Your leading -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God.  ...

"Then Joshua said, 'Open the mouth of the cave, and bring those five kings out to me from the cave.' They did so, and brought the five kings out to him from the cave.... When they brought the kings out to Joshua, Joshua summoned all the Israelites, and said to the chiefs of the warriors who had gone with him, 'Come near, put your feet on the necks of these kings.' Then they came near and put their feet on their necks. And Joshua said to them, 'Do not be afraid or dismayed; be strong and courageous; for thus the Lord will do to all the enemies against whom you fight'" (Joshua 10:22-25).

Our battle is a spiritual battle. And even though our battles may involve hurtful or hateful people, speaking painful words or deceitful lies, accusing us, judging us, or condemning us, our true enemies are the spiritual enemies taking advantage of every situation and every vulnerability "to steal and kill and destroy" (John 10:10). "For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in heavenly places" (Ephesians 6:12).

Just as You led Joshua to bring those kings out of their hiding place and into the open, out of the darkness and into the light, Your Spirit leads us to call out our spiritual enemies who have sought to rule and reign over us. In the light of Your glory and truth, let there be no place to run and no place to hide. Let them be exposed for their deceit and destruction so that that "everything exposed by the light becomes visible" (Ephesians 5:8).

And in the authority and power of Your name, may we crush their lies and silence their accusations, with our feet on their necks and Your victory in our hearts. We stand in You, and You stand in us, so that together we stand on the necks of our spiritual enemies (Ephesians 6:13). With the sword of the Spirit of the Word of God, let their lies be renounced, their chains be broken, and their strongholds destroyed (Ephesians 6:17). As with the enemy kings of Joshua, cut off their heads with their place of authority and rule in the regions of our souls they sought to hold captive under the dominion of their darkness and hang them high for all the hordes of hell to see what happens to the spiritual enemies of our God and His children (Joshua 10:26).

In our hearts and every region of our souls, through the victory of Your cross, the power of Your blood, and the authority of Your name, fulfill the promise of Your Word:  "The God of peace will shortly crush Satan under (our) feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with (us)" (Romans 16:20). "Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!" (1 Corinthians 15:57) "Thanks be to God, who in Christ Jesus always leads us in triumphal procession!" (2 Corinthians 2:14)

"Let God arise, let His enemies be scattered; let those who hate Him flee before Him.... But let the righteous be glad; let them rejoice before God; Yes, let them rejoice exceedingly!" (Psalm 68:1-3 NKJV) In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

Morning by Morning, October 17 - "In the Shelter of the Most High"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Lead me in the paths of righteousness for Your name's sake today and all the days of my life.    ...

"You who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord, "My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust" (Psalm 91:1-2).

You're my Shelter and my Savior. You're my Covering and my Comforter. Secure in You, I find my safety and peace. Trusting in You, I find my certainty in Your sovereignty and my confidence in Your compassion (v. 3-8).

When I'm in You and You're in me, no mater what goes on around me, it cannot come near me to destroy me or define me. "Because (I) have made the Lord (my) refuge, the Most High (my) dwelling place, no evil shall befall (me), no scourge come near (my) tent. For (You) will command (Your) angels concerning (me) to guard (me) in all (my) ways. On their hands they will bear (me) up, so that (I) will not dash (my) foot against a stone. (I) will tread on the lion and the adder, the young lion and the serpent (I) will trample under foot" (v. 9-13).

In Your goodness, You'll cause good to come out of all I endure. In Your mercy, You cause me to become more merciful out of all for which I've been forgiven. And out of Your overcoming power through the victory of Your cross and the glory of  Your resurrection, You cause me to overcome every challenge that would seek to overcome me, making me stronger in Your strength and more humble in Your grace.

With my eyes seeking Your face and my spirit embracing Your grace, I take hold of Your promise and hold fast to Your commitment:  "Those who love Me, I will deliver; I will protect those who know My name. When they call to Me, I will answer them; I will be with them in trouble, I will rescue them and honor them. With long life I will satisfy them, and show them My salvation" (v. 14-16).

I've lived long enough to know there will always be battles in this broken and fallen world, but I've also walked long enough with You to know You've already won the victory for me. "Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!" (1 Corinthians 15:57)

Neither darkness nor death, neither demons nor the disappointing or destructive choices of those who don't know any better or willingly choose to do the opposite of what brings life and peace to the world around them, nor anything else in all creation will be able to have the last word or the final say in my life (Romans 8:38-39). "No in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us" (Romans 8:27). You will always have the last word. You will always have the final say.  And Your word into my battles and Your say over my life is always spirit and life to me and to all who call on Your name and trust in Your grace (John 6:63). This is the blessing and the heritage of all "who live in the shelter of the Almighty" and "abide in the shadow of the Most High" (Psalm 91:1). Thanks be to God! Hallelujah and Amen! So let it be! In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

May you know in your heart and experience in your life the promises and protection of our God, finding your shelter and security in Him alone, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same of meGod bless you, my friend!

Morning by Morning, October 16 - Changing the Spiritual Atmosphere

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Fill my heart and guide my thoughts, as I begin my day grounded and centered in You, my God -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  ...

"Now a certain man named Simon had previously practiced magic in the city and amazed the people of Samaria, saying that he was someone great. All of them, from the least to the greatest, listened to him eagerly, saying, 'This man is the power of God that is called Great.' And they listened eagerly to him because for a long time he had amazed them with his magic. But when they believed Philip, who was proclaiming the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. Even Simon himself believed. After being baptized, he stayed constantly with Philip and was amazed when he saw the signs and great miracles that took place" (Acts 8:9-13).

With confident boldness and passionate faith, Philip was speaking Your name and proclaiming Your kingdom in word and deed. He was changing the spiritual atmosphere around him -- from the power of magic to the power of the Messiah, from the kingdoms of this world to the kingdom of our God, from exalting the "great god" of humanism to exalting the Great God who created the heavens and the earth and every human in His eternal sovereignty and authority over all.

Even Simon the magician believed and was baptized. When the name of Jesus is proclaimed the kingdom of God is advanced. "God has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father!" (Philippians 2:9-11 NKJV)

Like Philip, I want to boldly speak out Your name to change the spiritual atmosphere around me and embrace Your nature to change to spiritual atmosphere within me. I want to see Your kingdom come, Your will be done -- here in my world, here in my heart -- on earth as it is in heaven. I want to see every counterfeit power and every false god bow before the One True God. "Indeed, even though there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth -- as in fact there are many gods and many lords -- yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist" (1 Corinthians 8:5-6).

Father God, in the name of Jesus, by the power of Your Holy Spirit, advance the kingdom of God within me and around me today. Let knees bow and tongues confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Let lives be changed, beginning with mine. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

May you boldly and passionately proclaim the name of Jesus and the coming of the kingdom of God in word and deed today, in Jesus' name! May you see a shifting of the kingdoms of this world into the kingdom of our God in your world around you. Please pray the same of meGod bless you, my friend!

WELCOMING PRAYER

I have seen some interesting things in churches over the years. I knew a church where no one spoke to visitors or anyone else in the service. They had a young pastor who wouldn't put up with that. He challenged them, encouraged them, and scolded them. And sure enough, they began to speak to one another and gregariously welcome guests. But when you watched this congregation a while you realized that no one felt welcomed in there fellowship. Why do you think that was?

I knew another church where the people were quiet even a little shy. But everyone who came felt loved. I don't know all the differences, but I know something crucial about this church. The pastor encouraged everyone to pray for visitors and everyone around them in the services. He used to say, “We want to be a church where people know they will be prayed for when they come here.” It should not surprise us that people were often heard to say they sensed the presence of God there.

This is an important part of a church being or becoming a house of prayer. This can be done informally and quietly. I believe it should also be done formally and openly. I love welcome tables in the vestibule of a church. I believe someone working in a welcome center should ask guests entering a church how they would like someone to pray for them. You can pray briefly with many of those coming. At least write that request down and pray silently for God to meet that person's need. Possibly share it with the deacons or a prayer team.

Morning by Morning, October 13 - "The Flame of a Devouring Fire"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are the King of kings and the Lord of lords. Be King and Lord of my life and every moment of my day.  ...

"And in an instant, suddenly, you will be visited by the Lord of Hosts with thunder and earthquake and great noise, with whirlwind and tempest, and the flame of a devouring fire" (Isaiah 29:4).

The wildfires of California seem to be burning out of control. Earthquakes tremble the hearts of our nations, while hurricanes and floods batter our coasts. But whether spiritual attack or divine judgment, we need You, Lord God Almighty. We need the covering of Your grace, Heavenly Father. We need the power of Your name, Lord Jesus. We need a fresh visitation of Your glory, Holy Spirit of the Living God.

Even in the days of the judgment of Israel, You promised a day of visitation. Even in their sin and rebellion against Your Word and Your ways, You spoke of a day to come when You would move mightily against her enemies to deliver her and save her (v. 7). You encouraged her with hope even in the midst of her sorrow and shame, her fears and faults:  "On that day the deaf shall hear the words of a scroll, and out of their gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind shall see. The meek shall obtain fresh joy in the Lord, and the neediest people shall exult in the Holy One of Israel.... Therefore thus says the Lord, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob:  No longer shall Jacob be ashamed, no longer shall his face grow pale. For when he sees his children, the work of My hands, in his midst, they will sanctify My name; they will sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and will stand in awe of the God of Israel. And those who err in spirit will come to understanding, and those who grumble will accept instruction" (v. 18-24).

You promised to come "suddenly" like "the flame of a devouring fire" (v. 6). And we cry out to You to come suddenly, come powerfully, come sovereignly to save us and deliver us, to redeem us and restore us. "For indeed our God is a consuming Fire" (Hebrews 12:29). Come, Holy Spirit! Come burn again in our hearts with the fiery flames of revival. Come stir again in our spirits with the shaking of a great awakening. "Sleeper, awake! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you!" (Ephesians 5:14)

Come fulfill in our land Your covenant of revival that's activated through repentance -- "If My people who are called by My name humble themselves, pray, seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to the prayer that is made in this place. For now I have chosen and consecrated this house so that My name may be there forever; My eyes and My heart will be there for all time!" (2 Chronicles 7:14-16) Lord, let it be so. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

May your heart be stirred again with the fiery flames of revival and your spirit be shaken with a great awaking in you and your land, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same of meGod bless you, my friend!

Morning by Morning, October 12 - Believing and Embracing the "Precious and Very Great Promises" of God

Good morning, Lord Jesus. First things first, as I begin my day embraced my Father, centered in Christ, and filled afresh with Your Holy Spirit.  ...

"His divine power has given us everything needed for life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. Thus He has given us, through these things, His precious and very great promises, so that through them (we) may escape from the corruption that is in the world because of lust, and may become participants of the divine nature" (2 Peter 1:3-4).

You've already given me everything I need. Knowing You and Your nature, trusting You and Your will, helps me rest and receive all You've provided for me in my personal and intimate relationship with You. "Grace and peace (are mine) in abundance in the knowledge of God and of Jesus (my) Lord" (v. 2).

Help me believe and embrace these "precious and very great promises." When I need protection or provision or power, when I need hope or healing or help, when I need guidance or gentleness or goodness, when I need faith or fruitfulness or fulfillment, You've already promised it and already provided it. "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly place.... according to the riches of His grace that He lavished on us" (Ephesians 1:3-8).

You are faithful and true, so worthy of my trust. So I take You at Your Word and embrace You by grace to believe in Your promises by faith.  "And my God will fully satisfy every need of (mine) according to (Your) riches in glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever" (Philippians 4:19). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Morning by Morning, October 11 - We are "One Bread and One Body"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are One with the Father, One with the Holy Spirit, be One within me today.  ...

"The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? For we, though many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one Bread" (1 Corinthians 10:16 NKJV).

In these days of division and strife, remind us that we are one in You. Though we are many, we are also one. Though we may have different forms of worship, different traditions of expressions of our faith, even different understandings and interpretations of Your Word at times, we are also one. There is "one bread, one body," united through the body and blood of one Savior, our Lord Christ.

"There is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist" (1 Corinthians 8:6). And in You, we "have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as (we) were called to the one hope of (our) calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all" (Ephesians 4:1-6).

Come, Holy Spirit. Unite us in the oneness of Christ as the sons and daughters of our Father God we are created and called to be. May the bond of Your peace break down our walls, heal our divisions, and set things right in our hearts for the sake of our witness to our world. Lord Jesus, may Your prayer from Your last days before Your sacrifice as the Son of Man on this earth be answered in us:  "That they may all be one. As You, Father, are in Me and I am in You, may they also be in Us, so that the world may believe that You have sent Me. The glory that You have given Me I have given them, so that they may be one, as We are One, I in them and You in Me, that they may be completely one, so that the world may know that You have sent Me and have loved them even as You have loved Me" (John 17:21-23). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays
