How big is your God?

Recently, hurricanes, excessive flooding, earthquakes, and fires have drawn our attention to the many people who have been victims of these catastrophes. It's a time to remember the many victims in our prayers. As our country is facing many difficult issues, it is easy to get discouraged, especially when we thinking of the world our grandchildren are living. However, we have a big God bigger than the challenges and 9651031853?profile=originalstruggles we experience at this time and our grandchildren’s future. In the Bible, we have an excellent example of how Joshua and Caleb handled their challenges.

Moses sent Joshua, Caleb, and the ten other men on a scouting exploration to Canaan, as spies to the Promised Land. After exploring the land for forty days, the men returned to Moses to give their reports. Ten of the spies said that it was a magnificent area but the people are mighty and their cities are fortified and very large. The people are giants, much stronger than we are, we would not be able to attack them.

Joshua and Caleb reported to Moses that the land was good, but the people were giants. However, God would lead them. They had nothing to fear because their God was bigger than their obstacles. How do you see God? Do you see God big enough to meet your challenges, disappointments, and struggles?

God often allows challenging situations in our lives for a purpose, teaching us to depend more on Him. Although trials and problems are inevitable, they can be our friends. Pray your grandchildren will learn to expect them, submit to them, and learn from them. The challenges and struggles they face are not meant to destroy them. They are designed to promote spiritual growth, develop character, and make them capable of fulfilling their God-given assignments. Our adversities may be blessings in disguise.

Sometimes God wants to demonstrate to us truth about Himself. Only through trials do we move from academic faith to practical faith. As grandparents, we can pray our grandchildren will see their challenges as exercises designed to make them become stronger spiritually and mature in their character.

Pray that your grandchildren will see God as a great, big, strong God they can trust at all times, in all circumstances like Joshua and Caleb.

WHEN YOUR SOUL IS DOWNCAST

For the past few days I have been dealing with some severe anxiety and depression. Does the Bible say anything about this? It does indeed. In fact the Bible deals more comprehensively with depression than any other source I know. In places like Elijah in the cave in 1 Kings 19 and quite a number of Psalms God shows us that the cause depression can be physical, dietary, cultural, situational, psychological, moral, or spiritual. It is often caused by several of these simultaneously.

And being tempted in all points like us,(Heb.4:15) Jesus also faced anxiety.

God has spoken powerfully to me in John 12:27,28 where Jesus said,

“Now is my heart troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name!" Then a voice came from heaven: ‘I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.’”

Let me share with you four crucial perspectives by which Jesus dealt with His own anxiety.

First Jesus saw the Perspective of Time.

He said, “Now is my heart troubled.” Your anxiety, and for that matter your crisis, is temporary.

Viktor Frankl rightly directed people to ask themselves how they would want to behave in a particular situation if they were looking at it from the end of their lives. Jesus clearly dealt with more horrific circumstances then you and I can imagine. He endured them for the joy set before Him.(Heb.12:2) While your reason for anxiety is not nearly as great as His, you will share in the fullness of His glory.

Jesus also saw from the Perspective of Purpose.

He asks, should I pray for God to deliver me from this trial? “But,” He concludes, “it was God's purpose for me to be disturbed in trial.” God has put you in this place as well.

Do you remember what Satan said to God when the Lord pointed out Job’s obedience? “But you've put a hedge about him. Job doesn't really love you. He just serves you because you've made it easy for him.”

You need to be in this place for God to prove that He can work even your anxiety together with everything else for good.

The chorus of Laura Story's hymn, Blessings, says,

“What if Your blessings come through raindrops?

What if Your healing comes through tears?

What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You're near?

What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise?”

You are going through this trial for the high purpose of Almighty God on the earth and in eternity. Stand straight. Be strong. Call upon God for His grace to obey Him in the midst of it.

Jesus prayed from the Perspective of God's Glory.

Jesus knew that His purpose in eternity and upon this Earth was to glorify God the Father. That is our purpose as well. Many of you know that activity, especially good, wholesome, productive activity is a great help in dealing with depression. I know of no activity that so effectively counters anxiety and depression as that of praising God out loud. Our anxiety is worsened because we are so focused on ourselves. And until we break our self-preoccupation with praise of Almighty God, it will keep us bound.

Finally, Jesus experienced God's Presence.

God thundering from the heavens was a rare occurrence, even as Jesus walked upon this Earth. But the presence of God is not rare for a believer in Jesus Christ. And nothing usher's you into nearness with God like recognizing His presence and praising Him, praying and glorifying His Name. When you connect with the reality, purpose, and Glory of God, you will sense His presence as never before. Philippians 4:5 says, “Let your reasonableness be evident to all, the Lord is near.” The King James Bible says, “Let your moderation be evident.” In 1 Timothy 3:3 this word is translated, “gentle.” There the King James used the word, “patient.” The point is, you don't need to be anxious, the Lord is near you.

HE WILL SPEAK THROUGH YOU

This week a teenage boy who attends our church and six other young people were in a roll over car accident. Three of the children, including the boy from our church, are in critical condition. The father of that boy gathered the families of those kids and asked our pastor to come speak to them all. He shared this in our Sunday worship. He mentioned Job's friends sitting with Job in silence for seven days, and said there are some situations where no words are sufficient. He asked us to pray for him as he was to speak to them because if God does not speak to the families, he we wouldn't have anything to say.

Thank God that He does speak through us from time to time. I recently listened to Ravi Zacharias tell of multiple times when God spoke through him and he had not thought beforehand about what he said. But God does not just speak through preachers.

Hebrews 1 reminds us that in the past God spoke through prophets at many times and in various ways. But God does not just speak through prophets.

I want to be the best writer I could ever be. I would like to be smart, even wise. And I would not mind being a popular writer. But more than any of these things, I would like God Himself to speak through me, at least from time to time.

I don't wish to stomp my foot here, but I do have some thoughts about this. We need a humility that recognizes that we have our greatest impact when God speaks through us. I believe it is dangerous, especially when we write, to tell people God spoke through me. But I should be able to quietly give thanks when I realize that He has spoken through something I wrote.

God must decide when and if He speaks through us, but I think it is important to realize that He may choose to do that. And that realization should lead me to ask Him to do just that. I am not sure I shouldn't regularly ask Him to speak through me.

What about writing something that isn't about God at all? I have written a number of stories about other things that interest me. I think God can speak quietly about character or truth or any number of other things through stories that are not so in people's faces. Tolkien used to say he was creating an “evangelicum” in his writings. His imaginary histories don't have a trace of the gospel, but he deals with deep issues of life. If God chooses, He can touch the lives of readers through much lighter fare than The Lord of The Rings.

Morning by Morning, November 16 - The Father's Love for Us

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Let me hear and see and sense Your Presence here with me, here within me, as I begin my day in the communion of prayer -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  ...

"Then Jesus said, 'There was a man who had two sons. The younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the property that will belong to me.' So he divided his property between them. A few days later the younger son gathered all he had and traveled to a distant country, and there he squandered his property in dissolute living. When he had spent everything, a severe famine took place throughout that country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed the pigs. He would gladly have filled himself with the pods that the pigs were eating; and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said, 'How many of my father's hired hands have bread enough to spare, but here I am dying of hunger! I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me like one of your hired hands.' So he set off and went to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him. Then the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' But the father said to his servants, 'Quickly, bring out a robe--the best one--and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. And get the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found! And they began to celebrate!" (Luke 15:11-24)

When the prodigal son came to the end of himself, he said, "Here I am dying.... I am no longer worthy." He was giving up hope, believing his sins were too dark, his heart was too hardened, his character was too tarnished, his faith was too weak, his life was too wasted. He believed he was too far gone and began to give up to hopeless despair.

But then a thought came to his mind of the father he knew. And though he felt so much rejection from within and without, so alone and so unworthy that surely he would be unloved and unwanted, he chose to "get up and go to (his) father, and (speak) to him" (v. 18). He was sure in his mind and convinced in his heart that he would only face more shame, more rejection, more disappointment, all in confirmation of all the negative things he'd come to believe about himself and his worth in the eyes of his father and everyone else.

Yet, something drew him to come and see, to take a risk to come receive, to humble himself come and ask for his father's help. And what a father he found! His father ran to him and hugged him and kissed him and welcomed him home in the embrace of his love. He father was filled with joy at his son's return -- the one who was dead was now alive, the one who lost was now found! How great, how deep is our Father's love for us! How great, how vast beyond all measure!

As the song of worship says:

How deep the Father's love for us
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure

How great the pain of searing loss
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory

Behold the man upon a cross
My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything
No gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection

Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom

Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom
(Songwriter:  Stuart Townsend)

My Father, I thank You for never giving up on me. Thank You for never letting me give up on myself. Thank You for Your sacrifice of love for me and for all, through Jesus Christ, that there is no sin You won't forgive, no wound You won't heal, and no bondage You won't not break if we humble ourselves to turn to You, to call on Your name, and ask for Your help. When we humble ourselves in Your sight, You lift us up (James 4:10).

Thank You for Your everlasting promise and unfailing love:  "The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. 'The Lord is my portion,' says my soul, 'therefore I will hope in Him.' The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul that seeks Him" (Lamentations 3:22-25). In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Morning by Morning, November 15 - "Full of Grace and Power"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. In Your grace and from Your embrace, I seek first Your kingdom and Your righteousness, as I begin my day in the intimacy of Your Presence -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God.  ...

"Stephen, full of grace and power, did great wonders and signs among the people. Then some of those who belonged to the synagogue ... and others from Cilicia and Asia, stood up and argued with Stephen. But they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke" (Acts 6:8-9).

Stephen was not one of Your apostles; he was one of Your servants. He was not a learned scholar; he was a student of the faith. And he was one who sought to live his life in "good standing, full of the Spirit and of wisdom ... a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit" (v. 6:3-5). You anointed him and empowered him, as You did "great wonders and signs" through him, just as You desire to do through every one of us in the authority of Your name and the power of Your Spirit -- "through those who believe" (Mark 16:17-18).

Father God, lay Your hands upon me today. Fill me afresh with Your Holy Spirit today. With the authority of the name of Jesus in my words and the nature of Jesus growing in my heart, do great wonders and signs of Your love and grace through my life. Just like Stephen, I'm Your servant and I'm Your son -- a child of God, being filled up to overflowing with the same power and the same nature that raised Jesus from the dead (Romans 8:11). Display the glory of Your power and love, Your wisdom and grace, through me today -- "Christ in (me), the hope of glory" (Colossians 1:27). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

I pray you will be filled afresh with the Holy Spirit, full of God's grace and power, for the the Father to display His glory, His great wonders and signs, through your life today, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same of meGod bless you, my friend!

Morning by Morning, November 14 - Got Wisdom?

Morning by Morning, November 14 - Got Wisdom?

Good morning, Lord Jesus. King of kings and Lord of lords, be King of my heart and Lord of my life, as You rule and reign over every moment of my day.  ...

"Listen, children, to a father's instruction, and be attentive, that you may gain insight; for I give you good precepts:  do not forsake my teaching. When I was a son with my father, tender, and my mother's favorite, he taught me, and said to me, 'Let your heart hold fast my words; keep my commandments, and live. Get wisdom; get insight:  do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, and she will help you; love her, and she will guard you. The beginning of wisdom is this:  Get wisdom, and whatever else you do, get insight. Prize her highly, and she will exalt you; she will honor you if you embrace her. She will place on your head a fair garland; she will bestow on you a beautiful crown'" (Proverbs 4:1-9).

David spoke of wisdom to Solomon. And Solomon spoke of wisdom to his children. And by Your Word through them, You speak of wisdom to us. Your Word says, "Get wisdom." Show me, Lord. What does it mean to "Get wisdom?"  ...

It seems I hear You saying in my spirit, "To 'Get wisdom' is to pursue Me, for I Am Wisdom. I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Let Me put My thoughts in your mind and My desires in your heart so I can lead you in My paths. My paths are Righteousness, Truth, and Love. Hold fast to these; hold fast to Me and My Word. And you will 'Get wisdom' to walk in the way that leads to Life -- the abundant life I long for you to have in Me."  ...

Yes, Lord. "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. For by me your days will be multiplied, and years will be added to your life" (Proverbs 9:10-11). Lord Jesus, You are "Christ the Power of God and the Wisdom of God" (1 Corinthians 1:24). So put Your thoughts in my mind and Your desires in my heart; fill me with Your Spirit and lead me in Your ways. Guide my steps upon Your paths that lead to life in You, as a child of God "full of the Spirit and of wisdom" (Acts 6:3). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

I pray you seek and embrace the One who is the Power and Wisdom of God, allowing Him to put His thoughts in your mind, to put His desires in your hear, and to fill you with His Spirit to walk in His ways today, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same of meGod bless you, my friend!

Morning by Morning, November 13 - Honoring Our Veterans and Our Greatest Veteran

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I speak out Your name and listen for the leading of Your Spirit, here in the embrace of my Father to begin my day in the intimacy of prayer.  ...

"No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends" (John 15:13).

This weekend our nation honored the men and women who have been willing to fight and die for our freedom and our honor as our Veterans. We're thankful for their service. We're thankful for their sacrifice. We're thankful that they answered the call with courage and conviction to willingly lay down their lives for us. We owe them our respect and honor them with our gratitude -- "respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due" (Romans 13:7).

And as I honor them, I honor You. You set aside the glory of heaven to humble Yourself in the likeness of human flesh and blood to lay down Your life for me -- "even death on a cross" (Philippians 2:5-11). You are the Veteran of the greatest war ever fought -- the war between heaven and hell, between good and evil, between forgiveness and sin. The battle scars You bear are the jagged nail wounds upon Your hands and feet forever for us (John 20:27).

Through Your sacrifice of love -- a sacrifice we really can't even begin to fully grasp -- our world condemned to die will experience a new heavens and a new earth through the sufferings of Your cross and the glory of Your resurrection (John 3:16). "Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him" (John 3:17). We honor You and thank You. Thank You for Your service and Your sacrifice. "Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through Jesus Christ!"  -- our Greatest Veteran! (1 Corinthians 15:57)

Prayer and More

Prayer and More

Every time there is a mass shooting in a church, someone asks me if it causes me to re-live the emotions of September 15, 1999 at Wedgwood Baptist Church in Fort Worth – my home church – where a lone gunman entered a “See You at the Pole” Rally with two guns, two hundred rounds of ammunition, and a home-made pipe bomb. Before he took his own life, he killed seven people, wounded seven others, and traumatized hundreds including members of my family. The answer is always the same – an agonizing yes.

But this time – First Baptist Church, Sutherland Springs, with 26 dead, twenty injured, and a small Texas town traumatized – my mind went to another event.

When I was the Baptist campus minister at Pan American University, we were on a retreat in the mountains of southern Mexico. We had been warned not to go outside the camp after dark due to the wild animals in the mountains. Nevertheless, a student named, Jimmy, did just the opposite. When word got out about his absence in camp, students gathered in the cafeteria. After a long silence, a student said, “I think we need to get in a circle and pray” to which another student, a new, not-yet-discipled student, exclaimed, “Pray H____! Let’s go get Jimmy.”

Last week, and following every mass shooting, there were a lot of people encouraging prayer. I’m all for it. We need to pray. Survivors need our intercessory prayer. Injured, most definitely need prayer. But we all need more. It’s time someone did something about automatic weapons designed for warfare, but then used for killing innocent people, even children.

It’s time someone did something about mental illness, especially that which leads to violence. It’s time someone did something about those who “fall through the cracks” of society’s law and order. Pray? Absolutely. But isn’t it about time to go get Jimmy, to do something to prevent further trauma?

By the way, as you pray, remember to pray for spiritual awakening. It may well be the only solution.

Morning by Morning, November 10 - Rend Open Our Hearts and Your Heavens with Revival!

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Be at the center of my heart and every moment of this day.  ...

"'Now, therefore,' says the Lord, 'Turn to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.' So rend your heart, and not your garments; return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness; and He relents from doing harm (Joel 2:12-14 NKJV).

Repentance prepares the way of the Lord for revival -- in our hearts and in our land. When we rend open our hearts, You rend open Your heavens:  "Oh, that You would rend the heavens! That You would come down! That the mountains might shake at Your Presence -- as fire burns brushwood, as fire causes water to boil -- to make Your name know to Your adversaries, that the nations may tremble at Your Presence! When You did awesome things for which we did not look, You came down, the mountains shook at Your Presence. For since the beginning of the world men have not heard nor perceived by the ear, nor has the eyes seen any God besides You, who acts for the one who waits for Him!" (Isaiah 64:1-4 NKJV)

Come, Holy Spirit. Stir in our hearts to rend them before God. May we return to You, O Lord, our God, in our land and our generation to be a people who are called by Your name, pursuing Your will, to walk in Your ways. Set us ablaze with Your holy fire! Awaken us! Revive us! Display Your glory through us again! "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord!" (Psalm 33:12 NKJV) In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Morning by Morning, November 9 - Groaning for Greatness

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Make me more like You today.  ...

"We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies" (Romans 8:22-23).

We're groaning for greatness. We're yearning to be all You created us to be -- forgiven for our sins, filled with Your Spirit, and fulfilling our destiny as the sons and daughters of the King we are. May we settle for nothing less. May we hunger and thirst for more -- more of You, more of Your love, more of Your grace, more of Your nature in our hearts and Your power in our lives.

"Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised!" (Psalm 145:3) And in Your greatness, You long to do great things in us. "Be glad and rejoice, for the Lord has done great things" and will continue to do even more (Joel 2:20).  "Thus says the Lord who made the earth, the Lord who formed it to establish it -- the Lord is His name:  Call to Me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known... I am going to bring (you) recovery and healing; I will heal (you) and reveal to (you) abundance of prosperity and security.... And (you) shall be to Me a name of joy, a praise and a glory before all the nations of the earth who shall hear of all the good that I do for (you); they shall fear and tremble because of all the good and all the prosperity I provide for (you)!" (Jeremiah 33:2-9)

Lord, let it be so. Set us free from complacency and give us fresh passion. Deliver us from the poverty of lacking a zeal for You and the fulfillment of Your Word and Your will in our lives. With an increasing, insatiable hunger for Your kingdom and Your righteousness, we're groaning for greatness in You (Matthew 6:33). And as we do, Your Word will be fulfilled:  "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled!" (Matthew 5:6) In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

Morning by Morning, November 8 - "The Path of Life"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Help me start this day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with the Holy Spirit in the communion and intimacy of prayer with You.   ...

"I keep the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices; my body rests secure.... You show me the path of life. In Your Presence there is fullness of joy; in Your right hand are pleasures forevermore" (Psalm 16:8-11).

May I not be moved by anything but You -- not moved by worry or wishful thinking, resentment or regret, selfishness or shame, or anything else that's anything less than Your Spirit moving in my heart. "For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God" (Romans 8:14).

Put Your thoughts in my mind and Your desires in my heart. Motivate my actions and order my steps. Lead me in the way that leads to life in You. "Show me the path of life." In that path alone will my heart be glad and my soul rejoice. In that path alone will I find the "fullness of joy." In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

I pray you will be moved by nothing but God, moving in your thoughts and desires by His Holy Spirit to lead you in the path of life and into the fullness of joy in Him, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same of meGod bless you, my friend!

A PRAYER CORNER

Does your church have a prayer corner in the worship center? I Know a church that designates a back corner of their worship center as a place of special prayer. In every service they invite people to slip back at any time to pray. Members of a prayer team are there to pray with anyone who wishes.

They accomplish a number of important things with this. First, this helps to create an atmosphere of prayer in a church. Some might say, “We already have that. We pray throughout our services.” That is of course good. But in the church I where I observed this people began asking themselves if they should go back and pray. There is a difference in hearing a prayer and being invited to pray yourself. This practice helps normalize prayer in a congregation. People are told, at least by implication, that it is alright to need to pray. It is a normal thing to pray.

This helps to accommodate people who come into the church with burdens. This is a powerful way to tell them God cares about their heartache.

Morning by Morning, November 7 - Peace Through the Troubles and Tribulations

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God -- You are One; and You are with me. I welcome You here within me and every moment of my day.  ...

"Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.... Rise, let us be on our way" (John 14:27-31).

Every morning, I can rise and be on my way with You because Your peace is within me. As You promised to Your first disciples, You continue to promise every disciple, "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world" (John 16:33 NKJV).

When my world feels full of foreboding and fear, chaos and confusion, injustice and inhumanity, troubles and tribulations, You invite me to find my peace in You. You remind me You are the "Prince of Peace" -- my "Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6). You encourage me to overcome by embracing the One who has already overcome (Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 26; 3:5, 12, 21).

As I do, there's a shifting in me, long before there's any shifting in the world around me. It's a shifting of perspective that gives me peace in the confidence and assurance of Your Presence. You're with me through it all (Isaiah 43:2; Psalm 23:4). You never leave me, nor forsake me (Hebrews 13:5). You're with me "always" (Matthew 28:20).

And when it's all been said and done, when I see with my eyes what I've known in my heart, that You've been with me to the end, I will look and see that none of the things of this world that tried to overwhelm me and overcome me to steal my peace had the last word or defined my life. You did. You always have and You always will. And Your word over me is always good (Jeremiah 29:11). You are the Living Word of God, who is always with me (John 1:14). And that's what gives me "the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, (which) will guard (our) hearts and (our) minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:7). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

I pray you will know the peace that surpasses all understanding through every trouble and tribulation you ever endure, safe and secure, encouraged and overcoming in the One who is your Prince of Peace, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same of meGod bless you, my friend!

Friends, I join with you in prayer for all those who are grieving and struggling with the tragic loss of life in the community of Sutherland Springs, Texas and everywhere the troubles and tribulations of this world seek to overwhelm and overcome us.

Morning by Morning, November 6 - "In the Twinkling of an Eye"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Lord and Savior -- Lord of my life and Savior of my soul, lead my heart and my steps today.  ...

"Listen, I will tell you a mystery. We will not all die, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When this perishable body puts on imperishability, and this mortal body puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will be fulfilled:  'Death has been swallowed up in victory.' 'Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?' ... Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 15:51-57).

Yesterday morning, in the little town of Southerland Springs, Texas, not far from our home in San Antonio, a church full of mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, friends and family went home to be their Lord. They see You now "face to face" (1 Corinthians 13:12). "In the twinkling of an eye" their work on earth was done and they now rest forever in Your embrace. In the everlasting joy and eternal peace of Your resurrection power, they are "away from the body and at home with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5:8).

Here on earth, we'll struggle to try to make sense of the senselessness of their horrific mass murders in the midst of their Sunday morning worship. We'll seek justice and seek to make adjustments to try to guard against the terror and tragedies of this kind of evil in our world. But for every one of them who had You in their hearts, their fight with the evil of this broken and fallen world is finished. Death has lost its sting; death has found no victory, for You snatched them out of the grip of death and delivered their souls into the arms of their Father forever.

One day the last trumpet will sound and all who have lived or are living in personal relationship with You as Lord and Savior "will be caught up in the clouds together ... to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be with the Lord forever" (1 Thessalonians 4:17). But in a sense, the trumpet could sound just as suddenly, just as unexpectedly for any one of us or for any one of those we love any day.

So whether we're the one going home to be with the Lord or whether we're among the ones left here to mourn and grieve through the sorrow and anger, we all need You. We need to know You're with us, You're for us, You'll love us and lead us through whatever death or devastation we may endure until it's our day for all to be changed in the twinkling of an eye. Thank You that You are (Matthew 28:20). "Now may the Lord of peace himself give (us) peace at all times in all ways. The Lord be with (us) all" (2 Thessalonians 3:16). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

I pray you will live every day with the peace of Christ in your heart, ready at any moment to be with Your Savior forever, leading those around you to live in that peace as well, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same of meGod bless you, my friend!

A person who was healed physically after a believer had prayed for him is studying the Word with a believer. This person has also invited a friend to join him in the study. Praise the Lord for this healing and pray that hearts may be open, given spiritual understanding, and come to faith as they study the Word with the believer. Pray also for protection and wisdom over the believer.

Give praise that after much resistance to spiritual conversations, a local lady is suddenly showing interest in hearing more about the truth. Please ask the Lord to continue to soften her heart, take away fear, and draw her into His Kingdom. Ask too that believers will persevere in sharing even when met with resistance time and again.

Please pray that those who have had dreams or visions of Jesus Christ would not be fearful or dismissive but would experience great joy and a desire to know more. Ask God to connect them with believers who can help answer their questions and guide them to the way of salvation and relationship with Jesus Christ.

Many adherents to Islam live with an attitude of simply accepting the culture, traditions, and religion without question. Please pray that the Holy Spirit will stir their hearts and minds with questions and dissatisfaction and set them on a journey to find true the Peace.

The relative affluence of the Gulf, as does affluence anywhere, can cause a sense of entitlement as well as a lack of awareness of the needs of the less privileged. Pray for humble hearts that will receive the great love offered by our Heavenly Father and in turn bring radical change in the culture.

Morning by Morning, November 3 - Cup and Bread, Body and Blood, One in Christ

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I settle in to my place of prayer and welcome You in to Your place in me.  ...

"The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread" (1 Corinthians 10:16-17).

The cup and the bread, the body and the blood, the living Presence of the living Christ, living in me and living in us, together as one -- one with You, with one another, one in ministry to all the world. With You and with one another, "(we) are the body of Christ" in our world (1 Corinthians 12:27). "Just as the body is one and has many members of it, and all are members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we are all baptized into one body ... and we were all made to drink of one Spirit" (1 Corinthians 12:12-13). Thank You for the promise and the mystery of our faith and Your Word that "anyone united with the Lord becomes one spirit with Him" (1 Corinthians 6:17).

Come, Holy Spirit. You are "the Spirit of Christ" (Romans 8:9). You are "the Promise of the Father" (Acts 1:4). And You are here within me, here within us, together as one in our world to display the glory of God through our lives in Christ -- "Christ in (us), the hope of glory" (Colossians 1:27). Come display the glory of God through my life today. "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with (us) all" (2 Corinthians 13:13). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

Morning by Morning, November 2 - Hearing the Voice of the Great Shepherd

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You're with me always and everyway. I welcome Your Presence as I begin my day in the intimacy and communion of prayer with You -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  ...

"Now may the God of peace, who brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great Shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, make you complete in everything good so that you may do His will, working among us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever" (Hebrews 13:20).

You are the great Shepherd of the sheep and the great Shepherd of my soul. I'm one of Your sheep, seeking to hear Your voice and follow Your way in what is pleasing in Your sight -- as best as I can and all by Your grace. "The sheep hear His voice. He calls His own sheep by name and leads them out. When He has brought out all His own, He goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow Him because they know His voice" (John 10:3-4).

Help me keeping growing in knowing Your voice. Sharpen my spiritual senses and refine my spiritual discernment. Help me learn to discern, so I can sort out the source of every thought and image and sensing -- what's of You, what's of me, what's of something else. "(His sheep) will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers" (John 10:5).

As I listen, it seems I hear You saying, "Discern My voice by testing what You hear against My Word and the nature of My heart. I Am Truth; and I Am Love. If it's not Truth, if it's not Love, it's not Me."  ...

Yes, Lord. As Your Word says, "Test everything; hold fast to what is good; abstain from every form of evil" (1 Thessalonians 5:21-22). "Those who are spiritual discern all things" (1 Corinthians 2:15).

So I seek and welcome Your gift of discernment (1 Corinthians 12:10). I embrace the gift of my identity and my inheritance as a child of God to be led by the Spirit of God, "for all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God" (Romans 8:14). By the power of Your grace, what You speak, I will hear; and where You lead, I will follow -- my great Shepherd. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

I pray you will grow in the gift of discernment, seeking to hear and trust and obey the voice of the great Shepherd of your soul, following where He leads as the beloved child of God that you are, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same of meGod bless you, my friend!

Dear praying friends—
Recently tens of thousands of people gathered day and night for three days in more than 50 tents on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., to offer worship and prayer to Jesus. The sight of tents representing every state in our nation, filled with continuous worship, was amazing.
> >
God keeps calling this generation to move closer to Jesus. He called us last summer for Together 2016. He called us to multiple venues. And now He's calling us again to Dallas-Fort Worth for Together 2018. He calls His people because He intends to do something for His glory!
Thank you for praying with us over all these months for another great spiritual awakening in our nation—an awakening to Jesus! As we pray toward Together 2018 at the Texas Motor Speedway next October, let's ask Jesus to call this generation to a new Jesus movement.
Praying over Texas Motor Speedway>
Here are some other ways to pray:
  • Pray for the worship, faith, and vision for a Jesus movement to spread from Washington, D.C. to all states throughout our nation. May day and night worship of Jesus continue!
  • Nick Hall had the opportunity to share the gospel from the main stage at Awaken the Dawn, and he continues to travel around the country to proclaim Jesus. Pray for thousands of people to reset their lives to Jesus.
  • We are right now recruiting 2,000 reps to share the vision of Together 2018 throughout the country. Pray for God to raise up the right people with a passion to see another Jesus movement.
  • Pray for increased partnership with ministries across the nation that have the same vision to see the spiritual awakening of this generation.
  • Pray for all the communication pieces being developed: website, videos, printed materials, etc. We need clear communication and funding to get the message out about Together 2018.
  • Pray for our nation to recognize that the only hope in the midst of such division and polarization is Jesus! Ask God for boldness to declare the Gospel in a winsome way.

Thank you for continuing to hope and pray! God is calling and preparing us for some exciting days to come.
It's all about Jesus.

Morning by Morning, November 1 - By His Powerful Word, Arise!

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Lead me in the way that leads to life in You today.  ...

"Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days He has spoken to us by a Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom He also created the worlds. He is the reflection of God's glory and the exact imprint of God's very being, and He sustains all things by His powerful word" (Hebrews 1:1-3).

Word of God, speak into my spirit. Give me ears to hear Your powerful word that created me and sustains me, that inspires me and empowers me. "It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God'" (Matthew 4:4). And Your words to me "are spirit and life" (John 6:63).  ...

As I wait and listen, it seems I hear You saying in my heart, "My word for you, My son, is Arise! Arise and shine! Your Light has come. I Am your Light. I Am your Path. Arise and follow Me and I will show you great and awesome deeds you have not known. This is My promise and My invitation to you and to all who would trust Me, hear Me, and obey Me. There is yet an adventure of a lifetime set before you. And you were created for this lifetime I have set before you. There will be great challenges and great victories. There will be great darkness, but greater light -- the Light that shines through you and all who are called by My name. Arise and shine, My son! Shine with the glory of God shining through you!"  ...

Yes, Lord. As Your Word says, "Arise, shine; for your Light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and His glory will appear over you.... Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice.... I will appoint Peace as your overseer and Righteousness your taskmaster. Violence shall no more be heard in your land, devastation or destruction within your borders; you shall call your walls Salvation, and your gates Praise. The sun shall no longer be your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give light to you by night, but the Lord will be your everlasting Light, and your God will be your glory.... for the Lord will be your everlasting Light.... I Am the Lord; in its time I will accomplish it quickly!" (Isaiah 60:1-22)

These were Your powerful words hope and healing, spirit and life, You spoke into the spirit of Israel, even in a time of rebellion in the hearts of Your people and in their land. But You were not done with her and the people of her land. Just as You are not done with me and the people of my land. Yours is "an everlasting covenant" (Genesis 17:7; Isaiah 55:3 and 61:8). And "through the blood of the everlasting covenant, (You) make (us) complete in every good work to do (Your) will, working in (us) what is well pleasing in (Your) sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever" (Hebrews 13:20).

You're always inviting us to faith and repentance, to trust and obedience, to hope in the fulfillment of our heritage as the children of God, secured by the blessings of God (Galatians 3:14). "The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with (us), not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance.... But in accordance with His promise, we wait for the new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home. Therefore, beloved, while (we) are waiting for these things, strive to be found by Him at peace, without spot or blemish; and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation.... Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity!" (2 Peter 3:9-15)  In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

I pray you will hear and obey the power word of the Lord He is speaking into your spirit to Arise and Shine with the light of His glory today, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same of meGod bless you, my friend!
