LIFE AFTER HEAVEN

Our Lives in this world are all temporary. In 2 Corinthians 5 Paul pictures our bodies as tents. This is a great picture from Paul the tentmaker. He may have had bedouins in mind, moving every day with the sparse grass across the desert. He may have been thinking of sojourners traveling to a new city. What comes to my mind is a camping trip. A tent is not permanent. Look with me at these first five verses of 2 Corinthians 5.

“For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked.  For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.”

Even though our bodies are temporary, the Holy Spirit dwelling in us guarantees something far better that is yet to come.

We look forward to A Resurrected Body.

If you have it in your mind that heaven will be a bodiless, timeless, ethereal existence where you sit on a cloud and strum a medieval harp, you are missing the promises of the Bible. We don't long to be naked spirits. Our longing is to be bodies that are raised again like Jesus. In Luke 24:39 Jesus invited His disciples to touch His resurrected body, saying “Does a ghost have flesh and Bones?” In verse 41 He asks His disciples if they have anything to eat. They give Him some fish, and He eats it in front of them. I don't know about you, but I am convinced the Marriage Feast of the Lamb will be a wonderful meal.

Actually, the hope of Christianity goes beyond heaven. Our hope is the resurrection of our bodies. And even before that takes place, This promise brings us to the renewal of our minds. Paul begins this passage with the words, “We know.” Do you know?

We look forward to A Resurrected World.

Revelation 20 promises us a completely restored Earth where we will reign for a thousand years. But Revelation 21 goes beyond that. God will make a new Heaven and a new Earth where no unrighteousness can dwell.

We look forward to A Resurrected Life.

We look forward to a new Earth and a new universe where we will have new lives. This will be a life of joy. God will have wiped away every tear. This will be a life of purpose. We don't know a great deal about what our lives will be like in the new Heaven and Earth. But we know we will live in the purpose of God. This will be a life of eternal meaning and fulfillment.

“Even so, come, Lord Jesus!”

Morning by Morning, August 31 - "Come Away with Me," Says the Lord!

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I seek to humble my heart in worship and prayer to begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with Your Holy Spirit.  ...

"The Lord says, 'Come away! Flee from Babylon in the land of the north, for I have scattered you to the four winds. Come away, people of Zion, you who are exiled in Babylon! ... The Lord says, 'Shout and rejoice, O beautiful Jerusalem, for I am coming to live among you!" (Zechariah 2:6-10 NLT)

We live out our faith every day in the midst of the Babylonian world around us. It's a world that encourages pride rather than humility, self-promotion rather than preferring one another, building our own kingdoms instead of seeking first Your kingdom. Like in the days of the tower of Babel, the mindset of our world is to exalt ourselves in our own power and wisdom, insisting on our own ways in rebellion to Yours (Genesis 11:1-9). And so we are scattered -- scared and insecure even as we outwardly project our false confidence in the allusion of our control apart from trusting submission to the Lordship of Christ.

But You say, "Come away with Me! Come trust in Me; come yield to Me! My ways are good; My yoke is easy; My burden in light. Come find rest for your souls. As you humble yourselves in My sight, I will lift you up!" ...

Yes, Lord. Thank You for the promises of Your Word about Your yoke, Your burden, and Your ways to lift us up into Your Presence to live out Your purposes, secure in our identity in You (Matthew 11:28-30; James 4:10; 1 John 3:1). We don't have to strive and strain to exalt ourselves and live our lives in our own power and wisdom to build our own kingdoms that will never stand and never satisfy.

Let us hear the cry of Your Spirit, where Deep calls out to deep (Psalm 42:7). Your Spirit cries out, "I will repay Babylon and all the inhabitants of Chaldea before your very eyes for all the wrong that they have done in Zion, says the Lord.... I will punish Bel in Babylon.... Come out of her, My people! Save your lives, each of you, from the fierce anger of the Lord! Do not be fainthearted or fearful.... Assuredly, the days are coming when I will punish the images of Babylon; her whole land shall be put to shame, and all her slain shall fall in her midst. Then the heavens and the earth, and all that is in them, shall shout for joy over Babylon! (Jeremiah 51:24-48) Even as Your prophetic words continue to be fulfilled in our day and in the days to come, Your Spirit cries out, "Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! It has become the dwelling place of demons.... Come out of her, My people, so that you do not take part in her sins, and so that you do not share in her plagues; for her sins are heaped high as heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities!" (Revelation 18:2-5)

Bring us out of Babylon! Deliver us from the spirit of Babylon and fill us with the Spirit of the Bride! (Revelation 21:9)  "Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her, in order to make her holy by cleansing her with the washing of water by the Word, so as to present the church to Himself in splendor, without a spot or wrinkle or anything of the kind -- yes, so that she may be holy and without blemish" (Ephesians 5:25-27). "Let us be glad and rejoice, and let us give honor to Him. For the time has come for the wedding feast of the Lamb, and His bride has prepared herself!" (Revelation 19:7 NLT)

Father God, thank You for sending Your Holy Spirit to prepare the bride of Christ. Come, Holy Spirit. Call us out and fill us up! Come, Lord Jesus! "The Spirit and the bride say, 'Come!" (Revelation 22:17) And we embrace the hope and promise of Your Word, "He who is the faithful witness to all these things say 'Yes, I Am coming soon!" (Revelation 22:20) So in faith we respond with the final words of Your Word:  "Amen! Come, Lord Jesus! May the grace of the Lord Jesus be with God's holy people!" (Revelation 22:20-21) In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, I pray you are filled afresh with the Holy Spirit of the living God and set free from the spirit of Babylon to be made ready and prepared as the bride of Christ  in Jesus' name! Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Morning by Morning, August 30 - Surrounded and Secure

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God, You are One; You are with me; and You are within me.  ...

"Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds His people, from this time on and forevermore" (Psalm 125:1-2).

You surround me. You go before me to prepare my way and You come along after me to be my rear guard (Isaiah 52:12). You cover me and uphold me; You shield me and protect me; You lead me and guide me; You encourage me and empower me. You say to me, "Do not fear, for I am with you, do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with My victorious right hand.... For I, the Lord your God, hold your right and; it is I who say to you, 'Do not fear, I will help you.... Then you shall rejoice in the Lord; in the holy One of Israel you shall glory" (Isaiah 41:16).

You surround me in the security of Your ever-abiding Presence. You're "a wall of fire all around (me)" (Zechariah 2:5). "You hem in, behind and before, and lay Your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that cannot attain it!" (Psalm 139:5). But it is true. So I find my security and peace, my confidence and courage, my unshakable hope and unwavering faith, in the One who surrounds me in Your steadfast love. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Morning by Morning, August 29 - "The Apple of My Eye"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. King of kings and Lord of lords, be King of my heart and Lord of my life.  ...

"Truly, the one who touches you touches the apple of My eye" (Zechariah 2:8).

Help me see myself as the apple of Your eye -- chosen, beloved, one in whom You delight. I'm created in Your image and called according to Your purpose. I am a child of God. And my Father is the Creator of heaven and earth, the sovereign Lord of my life, and the Lover of my soul.

You correct me and discipline me because You love me. You teach me and lead me because You want me to become all You created me to be, fully alive in You. And You are not pleased with anything that would harm me or hinder me from knowing the truth of my identity and the fulfillment of my destiny in You.

Help me see myself as You see me. Help me honor and respect myself as You honor and respect me. Help me love myself as You love me. You say to me each day, "I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued My faithfulness to you" (Jeremiah 31:2). "The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness" (Lamentations 3:22-23). If You love me so much, so should I. If You see me that way -- even as the apple of Your eye -- so should I. And so I will -- as best as I can and all by Your grace. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

CHOOSING THOSE WHO INFLUENCE YOU

This is the second sermon I have written for you in which God spoke to me from a sermon I heard elsewhere. Rick Warren preached the other sermon I heard. It was titled, Learn How to Recognize God's voice, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-827QmRDjUA . I highly recommend that you find and listen to this whole sermon. It will free you from demonic strongholds, and comfort you as few things you have ever heard. However, I am only focusing on one of his 7 tests for discerning the voice of God.

There is a terrible story in 2nd Samuel 13. The Bible does not sugar-coat the heart of man. Amnon, one of David's sons was driven by desire for his sister, Tamar. And he had a cousin who influenced him to do evil. Is your life driven by desires? And in the light of that, who influences you?

For many years I have loved James 3:13-18. God has spoken to me again and again in this passage. I have always rightly applied these truths to developing wisdom in my own heart. But recently God has spoken to me about using these verses to measure those whom I should or should not allow to influence me. Can we read this passage with this in mind?

“Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”

The passage begins by asking, “Who is wise and understanding among you?” It goes on to tell us to let them show it in the “meekness of wisdom.”

THE INFLUENCE OF THE WORLDLY

The one question this calls us to ask about those who are seeking to influence us here is, “Are their hearts submissive to God” In this context that is what the word meekness connotes.

It is not always easy to determine this. Discerning someone else's heart and mind will require thinking and praying, listening to their words, and watching their behavior. James gives us three hearts signs that will eventually show up in speech and behavior. They are bitterness, jealousy, and selfish ambition.

I have actually known people who were drawn to bitter people because bitterness justified their own self-pity. The devil always wants to plant self-pity in our hearts. And bitter people help him. But of course these same people are swallowed up by it themselves. And they will turn their bitterness on you. They will have obvious or hidden selfish motives. They will not hesitate to manipulate you without any regard to your needs or God's will.

The influence of these people is earthly. It will always see from the point of view of present desires. Their influence is unspiritual. Have you ever known people who couched their selfish ambition as prayerful, spiritual, or even biblical? But their underlying motivations were lies, usually lies they told themselves to effectively manipulate you.

The influence of these people is demonic. Selfishness comes right out of the pit of Hell. And it will produce disorder and every vile practice in their own lives and in yours.

Sometimes these are people that are permanently in your life. And it can be very difficult to sever yourself from their influence, while trying to love them.

One important step when you do recognize worldly influence in your life is to make sure you do not act on what they have been pushing you to do. This is often difficult. They will always give arguments as to why they are right. And they will join your accuser in trying to make you feel guilty.

A more practical application may be to recognize when you have already acted on their advice. Admit that it was sin, and thank God that He has washed you clean from it. At that point He will stretch your faith as you learn to trust Him. God will often use the pain of that circumstance, not as judgment but as discipline, because He loves you and has important things to teach you.

THE INFLUENCE OF THE GODLY

In contrast James shows us the wisdom and grace that comes to us through the influence of those who are godly. The first characteristic of godly influences is pure motives. Ask yourself what they want, what they desire. Do they want something that you believe and the Bible teaches is good? Anything less will do harm in your life and theirs.

The next characteristic James lists is peace. Godly wisdom will always be peaceable. Do the people influencing you bless relationships? Do they want help you love people who are hard to love? Or do they exaggerate, express violence or anger, and degrade others?

Are you being influenced by people who are gentle? Are they open to reason? Can you discuss differences in perspective or understanding with them? I have always loved Isaiah 1:18, that begins, “Come let us reason together says the Lord.” God calls us to reason with Him. Of course, we, like our own children, need God just to tell us some things, simply because we could never understand from our limited perspective. But even in those cases He stretches us so that we might eventually understand His will.

Are the people who are influencing you merciful? Do they call you to be patient with others? Are you being influenced by people who reflect God's mercy in their influence and in their own lives?

James’ climaxes with fruitfulness. Fruit is something only God can produce in you and those around you. You cannot put fruit on a tree in your backyard. You cannot produce in other people's lives what only God can do.

The next two things that James mentions relate to trusting God to bear fruit in the lives of other people. Are your influences leading you to be ‘impartial and sincere?” These characteristics are evidence that you trust God to work in people's lives. Do those who Influence you lead you to trust God? I love the wording of verse 18 in the King James Version.

The fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.”

You can rest in God who produces spiritual fruit in the lives of those around you.

Here are the fundamentals from which I have drawn this sermon. I pray that God will use them to give you a message that will transform the lives of people by His power.

CENTRAL IDEA OF THE TEXT : James tells us that those who are wise we will speak in the meekness of wisdom.

FOCUS : The wise influence will speak to us from the meekness of godly wisdom.

THRUST : We must seek to free ourselves from selfish influences.

PICTURE : Fruit that God must produce on a tree.

STORY: 2 Samuel 13; The passion of Amnon, the influence of Jonadab.

INTRODUCTION: The meekness of godly wisdom

POINTS :

  • The Influence of the Worldly

Morning by Morning, August 28 - Words of Spirit and Life Abiding in Me

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Let Your Word and Your Spirit have Their way in my life today.  ...

"It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life" (John 6:63 NKJV).

Come, Holy Spirit. Fall afresh on me. Rise up within me. Renew me and revive me. Awaken me and anoint me. Flow into me and out of me. Inspire me and empower me and give me life -- the fullness of the abundance of life in Christ (John 10:10).

You are "the Spirit of Christ," making me more like Christ (Romans 8:9). You are "the Spirit of Jesus," making me more like Jesus (Acts 16:17; Philippians 1:19). You are "the Spirit of truth," making me desire to be one with the One who is the Truth -- "the Way, and the Truth, and the Life" (John 15:26; John 14:6). "For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set (me) free from the law of sin and death.... To set (my) mind on the flesh is death, but to set (my) mind on the Spirit is life and peace.... But (I am) not in the flesh; (I am) in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in (me)" (Romans 8:2-11).

Words of spirit and life, change me today. "The word of God abides in (me).... (I) have been anointed by the Holy One.... Let what (I) heard from the beginning abide in (me). If what (I) heard from the beginning abides in (me), then (I) will abide in the Son and in the Father. And this is what He has promised (me), eternal life" (1 John 2:14-20). Lord, let me live my life that way today and throughout my eternity. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, I pray God's words of spirit and life abide in you and flow out of you to change you and the world around you today, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Life Changes

Life changes and is never stagnant, if you allow yourself to grow. Growing takes effort. Reading His Word and applying His principles to your life. They are good principles, adding value to life. This does not mean you’re going to hop on a fluffy soft cloud and float through life with no heartache or pain. It does mean that you have God to lean on. It means when you seek Him, He will answer. When you follow His principles the hardships in life can be overcome. He cannot always keep you from harm, but He can help you heal from it. He does not control anyone. He is not a control freak. He is here to guide you when you ask but you must listen when He answers. He is your healer, but not always in the way you expect. You only think in the ways of man. You cannot always comprehend what He is doing in your life. This is where trust comes in. If you are following Him, reading His word, praying and soaking in His presence you will have greater understanding and greater healing from life’s hurts.

He is here for His people! The one’s who choose to follow Him. Being a follower of His Son Jesus does not make you weak. Instead it makes you strong. Spiritually strong. Align yourself with the Holy Bible. Align yourself with a Bible believing church that teaches Agape Love above all else. Learn of His ways. Learn to love others and His Son. Learn to love yourself. Many people have done so much wrong, been taught wrongly, or mistreated so badly, even by those who call themselves Godly, that they are confused and refuse to hear His Word. But know that I do not control them and they can choose to misconstrue His Word, or twist it for their own glory or excuses. He is the ONE and ONLY TRUE GOD who love’s your soul. Who forgives your sins and longs to guide you to the truth of the Word. He is peace when there is no peace around you. He is Love when there is no one to love you and even when you do have people to love you. He is the Great I AM, here to guide and save His people. You must choose Him as He has already put you on the list of HIS Chosen. He has given you the opportunity and the right to follow Him and seek His peace in your life.

Matthew 11:28-30: “Come to me you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Morning by Morning, August 27 - Back to School, Secure in the Spirit

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I speak out Your name and declare Your authority over every dimension of my life this day.  ...

"(Jesus) called a child, whom He put among them, and said, 'Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever welcomes one such child in My name welcomes Me. If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones who believe in Me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were fastened around your neck and you were drowned in the depth of the sea.... Take care that you do not despise one of these little ones; for, I tell you, in heaven their angels continually see the face of My Father in heaven.... So it is not the will of your Father in heaven that one of these little ones should be lost" (Matthew 18:2-14).

For many "little ones," this is the first day of school for the new year. Some have already begun; others will begin soon; yet, all are always learning, always vulnerable, and always in need of our prayers and Your angels.

Thank You for these ministering spirits, guardian angels who go forth at Your command and watch over Your children -- not just when they're little, but all the days of their lives. "Are not all angels spirits in the divine service, sent to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?" (Hebrews 1:14) "Praise the Lord, you angels, you mighty ones who carry out His plans, listening for each of His commands. Yes, praise the Lord, you armies of angels who serve Him and do His will!" (Psalm 103:20-21 NLT)

Father, we entrust our children to You -- to Your word and Your will, Your protection and Your purposes, Your guidance and Your guardians, Your care and Your compassion, Your heart and Your hands. We entrust them to Your Holy Spirit in Your heavenly school, as they go back to school, secure in the Spirit. You love them more than we do and more than we ever could. And You'll watch over them -- sending forth Your word and Your warriors -- in ways we can't and never could. "The Lord is like a father to His children, tender and compassionate to those who fear Him" and carefully watching over all those entrusted to Him (Psalm 103:13 NLT). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, I pray your "little ones" -- no matter who old -- are safe and secure in the Spirit of the Lord, with His holy word and His holy angels going forth to watch over them and protect them, confident in their identity and fulfilling their destiny in Christ, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

The Need to be Taught to Pray

I’m about to try something I’ve not done before. For many years I occupied the Chair of Prayer at Southwestern Baptist Seminary and taught a very popular course on prayer each semester. I’ve also used those class notes to teach prayer on Sunday nights or Wednesday nights in churches where I served as Interim Pastor and furthermore, lead numerous prayer seminars in churches over the years. I’ve never used the notes to preach a series on prayer on Sunday mornings. Now I find myself serving as Interim Pastor in a church with no Sunday evening service and located too far away for me to be there on Wednesday evenings. So, I have reworked my class notes into five sermons that will be delivered on the five Sundays of next month. Why do I do this? I assume that if the disciples of Jesus needed to be taught to pray (“Lord, teach is to pray” Luke 11:1), modern disciples need the teaching as well. I did have one student tell me they wanted to take a class from me, but did not need the class on prayer, since they considered themselves a genuine prayer warrior, possessing the spiritual gift of intercession. I asked them if they had ever prayed till their sweat turned to drops of blood? The response was just a blank stare. I followed with, “That’s the way Jesus prayed (Luke 22:44) and I doubt if you have perfected your prayer life until you pray like Jesus.” The student signed up for the class and later wrote me a note, expressing thanks. I’ve often wondered if that student ever prayed till sweat turned to blood. So, how’s your prayer life?

What makes Christianity different?

Every religion, in one way or another, is based on the good behavior/good works of the individual. Even Christianity, when practiced as a religion (living by rules and rituals – counting on traditions) is based on good works – being  good enough (whatever that means) and better than average. But true Christianity is not based on your good works but on the good work of Jesus dying on the cross and rising to new life, defeating death. How can any amount of your good works match that? Gods not counting your good works; but you can count. On God’s good work accomplished through Christ. John 3:17

Why Christianity Is Different

Every religion, in one way or another, is based on doing good works...and hoping you are above average. Zero confidence. When Christianity is perceived as a religion, what you must do to please God, then it to is based upon your good works. But true Christianity is about good news not good works. The good news of the good work of Jesus on the cross and bursting out of tomb – no amount of good works can match that. Good works. Or. Good News?

UNITY IN THE FAMILY

Last Sunday our pastor preached on Psalm 133. And God spoke to me as he preached. I am reminded of something I once heard from a spellbinding preacher. He said God gave him his best sermons as He spoke to him when he was listening to other preachers preach. Well, in fact, although my preaching is now done with my pen, God still seems to be giving me sermons. And I would like to share this one with you. And my sharing will be most blessed, if at some point in reading this God gives you a sermon to preach to His people.

UNITY AMONG BROTHERS

I once heard a denominational leader say he could tell the spiritual temperature of a church by simply walking into a worship center as people were gathering for the service on a Sunday morning. I think he was absolutely right. You can sense excitement in the people or the lack of it. And most of all you can feel the love and unity binding the church together. Jesus said all men would know we are his disciples by the way we love one another.

One of my favorite Psalms is Psalm 133. The first verse of Psalm 133 calls us to see the goodness of unity in the family of God.

“Behold, how good and pleasant it is
   when brothers dwell in unity!”

The wording of this reminds me of the creation account in Genesis 1. There the Hebrew word tov, which translates to our English word “good” is first used in the Bible. Again and again as God creates, the scripture says “God saw that it was good.” But after He created man, we have His greater exclamation in verse 31 which begins with the word, “Behold.”

“And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.

With this call for us to sit up and pay attention, Psalm 133 is calling us to see that in the unity of the family of God, He is restoring the goodness of His creation.

And he says it is good and pleasant. There is a sweetness that is not only enjoyed by our Heavenly Father, but that He shares with us in the unity of the Church of Jesus Christ.

  • CONSECRATION

Verse 2 of Psalm 133 paints a vivid picture for us.

“It is like the precious oil on the head,
   running down on the beard,
on the beard of Aaron,
running down on the collar of his robes!”

The Holy Spirit is comparing unity in the family of God with the consecration of the priesthood. What this must have brought to the minds of the Children of Israel is something very similar to some things God did in my early life.

I grew up in Oklahoma going to Falls Creek Baptist Assembly. You do not have to be from Oklahoma to have herd of the largest Youth Camp in the world. But I remember going as a young person with thousands of other young people and listening to the word of God preached. At the end of each evening service hundreds of young people would go forward in the altarcall to commit their lives to Christ. When they would finally bring that invitation to a close they would lead those young people to the chapel where where there was counseling space. And as they marched away we would all sing, I have decided to follow Jesus. I seldom sing that hymn without chills rising up on my neck and the the backs of my arms as I remember seeing those crowds of young people, and myself being one of those committing our lives to Christ.

The psalmist here is saying our unity is a God thing. He brings it about. And it is an expression of consecration to him.

But I said this reminds me of two things in my early life. The other is when I first sensed God calling me to preach. I struggled with His calling for an entire semester in college. And when I became convinced that God was indeed calling me, that became the driving force of my life. It is that to this day. You may not be called to preach. But as you sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ you have been given a calling by God. And like Aaron and all the priest who followed him you have a special anointing, a purpose that is to be the driving force of your life. This picture says the unity of the church is an expression of our

  1.   PURPOSE AND THE GOSPEL.

The next picture given in verse 3 is very different but quite as vivid.

“It is like the dew of Hermon,
   which falls on the

   mountains of Zion!
For there the Lord has commanded the blessing,
   life forevermore.”

This is a picture of rich blessing from God.

III.   BLESSING

Mount Hermon is a snow capped-mountain, part of a snow-capped range just north of Israel. We lived for 30 years in the Pacific Northwest surrounded by glorious snowy mountains. And the rain fall was a continual mist of blessing. We had a 90 foot Douglas Fir in our backyard. There was a hundred fifty foot tree in the park two blocks from our house. And our library had in a glass case a cutting of the largest Douglas Fir ever removed from the forest. The base of that tree was over 12 feet in diameter. In this picture God is saying unity the church grows from his continual blessing upon us. And it ends by saying this blessing is itself eternal life.

  1.   ETERNAL LIFE

When we see and enjoy unity in the family of God we ought to immediately think of John 3:16. Let's say that verse together in the version we have projected.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Do you have a longing in your heart to be part of the unity of God's family?

The sermon that God gave me is different from the sermon our pastor preached. And I suspect if God speaks to you through this brief, the sermon you preach to your people will be much different than mine. However, I suspect any sermon preached on Psalm 133 would depend upon similar fundamentals. In the days when I was preaching week by week I always began with the basics listed below. With these basics in my mind I would usually take a walk. As I walked my sermon I would preach everything that came into my mind on these basic points. And so I actually composed my sermons out loud.

THE CENTRAL IDEA OF THE TEXT : The psalmist exclaims over the God given goodness of unity among brothers.

PEOPLE : believers who make up this church

Felt/Need : unity in the church

PURPOSE : Doctrinal; I want my hearers to know unity in the church is a work of God.

THRUST : Unity in the church is a God thing.

PICTURE : The Dew from Mt. Hermon

STORY : Oil on, Aaron's beard

POINTS :

Introduction :

Good and Pleasant

  • Consecration
  • Purpose, Gospel
  • Blessing
  • Eternal life

Morning by Morning, August 23 - "Stand Firm for Christ"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Be at the center of my heart and the moments of my day.  ...

"It is God who enables us, along with you, to stand firm for Christ. He has commissioned us, and He has identified us as His own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first installment that guarantees everything He has promised us" (2 Corinthians 1:21-22 NLT).

Holy Spirit, enable me and empower me to stand firm for Christ today. Deliver me from my duplicity; awaken me from my wavering; call me out of my complacency. Set me ablaze with a fiery passion to proclaim the name of Jesus and live into this day in the nature of Jesus. "We (are to) live like Jesus here in this world" (1 John 4:17 NLT).

"The Spirit who lives in (us) is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.... We belong to God, and those who know God listen to us. If they do not belong to God, they do not listen to us. That is how we know if someone has the Spirit of truth or the spirit of deception" (1 John 4:4-6 NLT). So by the power of Your grace at work within me, the spirit of this world will not intimidate me or silence me or keep me from standing firm for Christ.

By Your Spirit, I will stand and I will speak and I will shine with the light of Your glory in my heart -- not in my power, but Yours; not in my goodness, but Yours. "For God, who said, 'Let there be light in the darkness,' has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ. We now have this light shining in our hearts" (2 Corinthians 4:6-7 NLT). As You keep shining, I will keep standing -- standing firm for Christ. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, I pray you stand firm for Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit, letting the light of the glory of God revealed in the face of Jesus Christ shine through you today, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Q&A

Q&A

Sometimes the student in a class who asks a lot of questions is labeled as a “wise guy.”  Instead of that negative label, I believe that questions generally lead to better understanding. For example I believe good teachers encourage asking questions, and they generally respond positively to good questions from their students. I take the opportunity to ask a few questions in my Thinkables and will do so today. If I am doing a good job of encouraging you to think some new thoughts, then you will likely come up with some good questions.

This year I have asked quite a few people to think about examples if they believe they live in a broken world. I can’t think of anyone who was unable to think of some examples. A good question for someone who lives in a broken world is, “why wouldn’t a powerful and caring God fix a broken world?” Have you ever asked that question? What is your answer? This survey alone should be enough to cause many to want to see what God says in defense of himself in the written record he has provided us.

I have presented his answer to quite a few people, and although some have delayed applying it to their lives, no one has yet argued against God’s answer. Certainly no one has come up with a good alternative answer.

So here’s another question for you. I find that most people are too busy, or have other excuses for not searching God’s word in order to know where they stand with him and what kind of a future he has prepared for them. I find it very strange that we spent a lot of time, money, and effort, to investigate things that are high up on our interest list, but many shy away from any serious investigation of where they are going to spend eternity, and what it will be like.

So here is an offer for you. Please spend 15 minutes this week pondering any practical question you might have about eternity and how to gain confidence regarding possibilities and plans pertaining to your own destination. If you will email me a question or two, I will do my best to provide answers, and the basis for my answers.

When Joseph was imprisoned for 13 years he impressed inmates and officials with his demeanor, positive attitude, and godly answers to their questions. This reputation eventually led to Joseph being appointed number two man in all of Egypt, where he saved thousands from starvation in a widespread famine. I have a friend in the Bonham jail at this moment who has a similar well-deserved reputation. The evidence of this is that 12 of 13 inmates in his POD attend his daily Bible study, ask him to pray for them and their family, and seek his spiritual guidance.

God honors our questions as you can readily see by reading the book of Job. He loves to answer our serious questions, even though his answers often differ from what we might expect. I’m not aware of a downside if you choose to take me up on my offer. God loves us enough to give us free choice, including our freedom to reject His provision to develop a personal relationship with us (should we choose to initiate one}.

I am waiting to hear your questions.

Morning by Morning, August 22 - "Real Life"

Morning by Morning, August 22 - "Real Life"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are welcome here in my heart and every moment of my day.  ...

"Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven where Christ sits in the place of honor at God's right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all His glory" (Colossians 3:1-4 NLT).

"Real life" is in You. "Real life" is when I allow You to be my life -- when I'm abiding in You and allowing You to abide in me, when I'm trusting You to know what's best, when I'm following You into the fullness of my destiny in You, secure in my identity in You (John 15:4). "Real life" is when I wholeheartedly embrace the One who is "the way, the truth, and the life" -- holding nothing back from You and fully taking hold of You (John 14:6).

So as I begin my day, I can set my sights on the things above or the things below. I can choose to see with the eyes of heaven or the eyes of earth, with Your perspective or the world's perspective. I can seek You first and Your kingdom and Your righteousness or I can seek to just go with the flow of the ways of the world around me or the ways of my flesh that are not yet crucified with Christ within me (Matthew 6:33; Galatians 2:20).

I choose You. I choose my "new life with Christ." I choose Your perspective, to live into my day with Your vision and Your heart, to walk in Your ways and Your will, as best as I can and all by Your grace. I choose "real life" in You. And in the amazing mystery of faith and grace, You choose to live Your life through me. "This is the secret:  Christ lives in (me). This gives (me) assurance of sharing His glory" (Colossians 1:27 NLT). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

OUR HOPE IS IN HEAVEN

Recently my oncologist ask if I would add my experience to the ‘Patient Stories” on his website. I agreed, and began by looking at the stories already included there. I was amazed that out of 27 accounts only one had any mention of prayer or God or anything beyond this life. In 1 Corinthians 15:19 Paul tells believers that if our hope is only in this life we are of all people most miserable. This truth can be applied to cancer patients whether they are Christians or not. It is hard to be positive when you no you may very well lose everything you hope for. This of course is true for everyone, whether you have cancer or not. In Colossians 4:5 Paul speaks of the hope stored up for us beyond this life. Look with me at the context of this verse in Colossians 1:3-6

“We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel, which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God.

Our hope is stored in heaven for us. Our great treasure, our ultimate rewards are waiting for us in heaven. It is there that we will enjoy the embrace of our Lord, and hear him say, “Well done.”

The gospel gives our lives purpose, meaning, and hope beyond this life. and it will bear fruit in our lives and in the lives of others to the last breath that we take. If this is true, we do not need to escape our trials. God will give them meaning to the last moment we live on this earth.

Morning by Morning, August 20 - Perhaps a Perfect Prayer

Good morning, Lord Jesus. First of all, I seek You -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God.  I look to You, to worship and pray, to watch and wait, to listen as You lead, to begin my day fully surrendered to You, as best as I can and all by Your grace.  ...

"For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. I pray that, according to the riches of His glory, He may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through His Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God" (Ephesians 3:16-19).

Yes, Lord. I receive this prayer from the apostle Paul, inspired by Your Holy Spirit and imparted into my human spirit. Every dimension of the trinity of God, the tri-unity of God, is mentioned and moving in this flow of power and love from heaven to earth and from Your heart to mine -- God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

O Lord, my God, I gladly receive this prayer, because I desperately need this prayer. I desperately need to bow my knees in humble surrender and trusting faith before You, my Father. I desperately need to be strengthened in my inner being with Your power through Your Spirit. I desperately need You, Lord Jesus the Christ, to be Lord of my life, as You dwell in my heart through faith in You. I desperately need to be rooted and grounded in Your love, so I can love You with an undivided heart -- with all my heart and mind and soul and strength, loving You and loving others, as an unhindered expression of Your nature through my life. I desperately need to comprehend with my mind what You're doing in my heart, as You're teaching me and empowering me to experience and know the love of Christ, more and more every day. And in all these ways, I desperately need to be filled with all the fullness of God.

What more could I pray? What more could You desire? This may be a perfect prayer that perfectly expresses Your heart for my heart and Your will for my life. Lord, let it be so. "Now to Him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever!" (Ephesians 3:20) In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, I pray you are filled with all the fullness of God, embracing and experiencing all the Lord has for you, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same for me. "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the common of the Holy Spirit be with you" (2 Corinthians 13:13). God bless you, my friend!

PTAP: 2018 Prayer for Hajj.

HAJJ PRAYER 2018

Dear Friend of the Arabian Peninsula,

On 19-21 August 2018, PTAP (Praying Through the Arabian Peninsula) is asking for 100,000 people from around the world to join us in Prayer & Fasting for the two million Muslims going on the Hajj, the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca.

The Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam. These are required acts of service for all Muslims (conditions apply to those that are impoverished or in poor health). The city of Mecca is the center of the entire Muslim world.  It is the place where the Hajj is performed and the place where all Muslims direct their 5x daily prayers.  As a consequence of the heightened religious activity, there are significant barriers that prevent the gospel from spreading to these people at this time.

However, our God knows no barriers!  There are testimonies of Muslims performing the Hajj in Mecca and encountering God – through receiving a digital version of the Bible, through Dreams & Visions, through encounters with Christians during their journey. And so, we desire to gather together a dedicated body of Christians to stand in the gap and to fast and pray for this monumental event - for God to do something truly miraculous, something only He can do.

Would you join us in this effort as well as spread the word about this prayer and fasting event?

We have created three core resources for you:

A Hajj prayer promo video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaLq9B14wBM) - This is designed to introduce this event and invite others to join us for these three days of prayer and fasting.

Hajj Prayer guides and a Hajj prayer video (https://prayforap.com/hajj.html) - We created a helpful 4-page prayer guide that has been translated into several languages (including Korean, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, German, and Portugese).  There is also a corresponding video to watch.

Please forward the above resources through your spheres of influence and also feel free to edit as you feel led.  And similarly, when it comes to the fasting element, feel free to fast you feel led - one meal, one day, all three days, individually, as a group, etc.

Our one request is that you let us know an estimate of how many people in your spheres of influence prayed and also the country where they prayed during these three days. Please send your estimates and any spiritual insights you have gleaned from this time of prayer and fasting to <pray4ptap@gmail.com>.

See Act 13:1-3 for a wonderful illustration of how fasting became instrumental in the laying hold of God for the shaping of world-changing ministry. We long to see many of the 2 million Muslims performing the Hajj in Mecca, Saudi Arabia in August 2018 to encounter Jesus. Many Blessings,
