The problem of racial tensions and/or divisions is not insurmountable. Through consistent prayer together with proper understanding and  applications of God’s words, the Bible, we can achieve improved and lasting unity.  The Holy Scriptures reveal in Genesis 1:27-28 that “God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them”. He created them to be “fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it”. The growing human populations with the associated cultural and racial diversities are in response to God’s plans for the earth and His image bearers.  Humanity was not created to be static but to grow and oversee a dynamic earth. There are bound to be racial differences considering the dynamic and extensive nature of God’s earthly creatures including the emergence of nations (Genesis 1:1-31, 10:31-32). The diversities are not meant to divide or hurt our earthly existence but are for our common good and purpose in line with Genesis 1:27-28.

We can be different in terms of race and/or cultural identities but we are unified as people created in God’s image.  We must function with this mind to stay united for our common good and purpose in line with Genesis 1:27-28 in spite of our differences and the dynamic nature of our world. Knowing who we are as God’s image bearers and responding to one another in love and humility will lead to improved harmony among us. Paul teaches of this mindset, as exemplified by our Lord Jesus Christ, in Philippians 2:5-11 “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: who, being in very form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledges that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”  In Christ’s mindset we see: submission to the Father’s will to die for the salvation of sinful men and women (Matthew 1:21, John 3:16-18, and Colossians 1:14); humility or self-abasement in serving the interests of others even at the expense of His life as well as His selflessness for the well being of all.

Imitating the mind of Christ is essential to developing and sustaining better relationships in a multicultural and multiracial society. Paul’s invocation of the exemplary nature of Christ’s submission, humility, selfless service, self abasement and self offering on the cross for the sins of all (1 John 2:2) provides the models of behavior and attitude for unity and helpful relationships.  We must “be like-minded, have the same love, be one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above ourselves, not looking to our own interests but each of us to the interests of the others” (Philippians 2:1-4). Imitating the mindset of Christ will help us to overcome racial tensions and divisions. It will foster helpful and thriving relationships. It will lead to great progress just as our Lord Jesus Christ was exalted by the Father to the highest place and given the name that is above every name.

In addition, we must pray for one another just as Christ did for us. He prayed for our perfect unity with one another and with the Holy Trinity. He prayed protection and preservation. He prayed for our joy, and common good. He prayed for us for eternal life and glorification with Him. He also prayed for our knowledge and love of the Father as well as for our sanctification by His truth (John 17:1-26).

Paul’s letter in 1 Timothy 2:1-16 contains how we should pray for one another : “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people”.  We should also pray against the things that cause and/or encourage divisions (2 Corinthians 10:4-6). Prayer for forgiveness, healing, true love, respect and compassion for one another (Romans 12:9-21) is equally necessary. Our policemen and women who work to protect us also deserve our unalloyed trust and respect as well as our continuing prayer for them for protection and for God’s wisdom and discernment in the discharge of their duties for safer, united and friendlier communities (Romans 13:1-10).  With the mindset of Christ, proper and continuing prayer, as well as with correct and practical applications of the truth of God’s word we can achieve better race relations for purposeful, peaceful and prosperous living in line with Genesis 1:26-28 and Philippians 2: 1-11.

PRAY FOR THE COURT

Many of us are, or should be, alarmed about rulings by the supreme court in these days. Our founding Fathers set up a balance of power between three somewhat independent branches of government. But now the Supreme Court of the United States has begun to trump the law and the will of the people apparently without precedent in law or the constitution. They have begun to short-cut our representative government by legislating from the bench. Hence we are losing government of the people by the people and for the people.

I need to say the court has opposed righteousness and the constitution before. In 1858 the Supreme Court ruled that negroes whose ancestors were brought here as slaves had no access to American courts.[1] That ungodly decision helped to throw us into a bloody civil war. On the other hand, I have to admit that I thank God for civil rights decisions that went against the will of voters in southern states in the 1950s. They were on the side of the angels.

I have some crucial advice that those who care about righteousness in our country.

Trust God!

That surely means being confident that He is still sovereign over history. I do not mean to say bad things will not come upon our nation as a result of our sin. Sin is still a disgrace to any people. And the way of the transgressor is hard. But even as terrible things come, God will draw people to His grace, and He will see us through our trials.

Trusting God will also mean standing for what is right even when our laws or judicial rulings tend to normalize evil. We must do our best to stand firm even when all of society seems to be turning against God.

Most importantly people who trust God, will pray. We will pray for our neighbors and neighborhoods. We will pray for the power of holiness in our churches. We will pray for our government and our laws. We will pray for our president and congress as they appoint and approve judges. And yes we will pray for The Supreme Court of The United States. Have you prayed for the court? It is more important to ask, if you will pray for the court. Here are the names of the current Supreme Court Justices. I encourage you to write them in your Bible and pray regularly for each of them.

Justice Clarence Thomas

Chief Justice John G. Roberts

Justice Anthony Kennedy,

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Justice Sonia Sotomayor

Justice Stephen G. Breyer

Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr.

Justice Elena Kagan

Of course there are only eight justices since the untimely death of Antonin Scalia. We also need to pray for the appointment of the ninth justice who will be brought up from a lower court. I believe God will work mightily through our prayers.

I would like to share this Free Back to School E-book with you, giving you resources to pray effectively for your grandchildren as they go back to school.

Some of our grandchildren will soon be going back to school in August and September, some are excited to be back in school, and however, some are anxious because of the unknown.

The beginning of the school year can be a stressful experience for children from preschool thru college. New teachers and staff, new classmates, new dorm roommates and unfamiliarity in a new school setting can leave children and youth vulnerable to all kinds of negative influences.

Our grandchildren are growing up and being educated in a time of global uncertainty, with peer pressures and temptations that we never experienced in our youth. We, as grandparents can help provide a hedge of protection for them, so they may be able to resist the temptations and deceptions they encounter, and experience, peace, joy, and success, as they navigate their world hostile to the truth.

 Call to Action

This Back to School Free E-book will encourage you and give you effective ways to intentionally pray such as Suggestions to Pray for School Children (Preschool thru college). The responses for the E-book was overwhelming last year, get your E-book soon.

Raw Prayer

How polished should our prayers be when we pray to God?  It's one of many questions Christians, and many non-Christians alike, carry with them in life.

Recently, I was reminded about how beautiful the prayer of a newborn Christian can be.  It's a prayer spoken from the heart, in their own natural vernacular (which likely isn't politically correct, and may include swear words, unrefined verbiage, poor grammar, and more linguistic faux pas).  It's a prayer that's raw, transparent, authentic, personal and speaks directly to God's heart.

I've witnessed men receiving Christ while reading a prepared "sinner's prayer," only then afterwards to pray/speak similar thoughts directly from their hearts to God, using their own words.  Sometimes coarse words fly during the prayer, but it's obvious that they're not said in vengeance.  They're spoken in confession and repentance.  It's rather a beautiful context to hear those words spoken that many legalistic Christians would outright dismiss!

While I don't condone the use of foul language in prayer (especially if the Christian has been growing in his/her faith and walk with God through Jesus and the Holy Spirit), for someone who has yet to come to faith, or who is beginning to place his/her faith in Jesus, God will not ignore the prayer from a person's heart towards His.

We're reminded by Jesus in Luke 18:9-14 that a prideful heart hinders prayer, but a humble heart is honored by God:

To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’

“But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’

“I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

As a Christian who can fall into a trap of feeling his prayers must sound a certain way, possibly with a certain flow or elegance; it's a humbling reminder that we need not perform before our Father.  He's impressed with the position of the heart (especially a heart humbled towards Himself), and not the outward words or actions in prayer that can often appeal far more for man's impressions than to God Himself.  Prayerful actions will flow out of the humbled heart, and it is God who searches the heart, not man.

We should never feel paralyzed from praying simply because we're not sure if we can word a prayer "correctly."  Jesus gave us an excellent model of prayer (Matthew 6:9-13) that we will do well to both pray, and study in depth!

NATIONAL UNITY 2

I wrote last week that I am alarmed over the seriousness of our national disunity in America. But in that blog I pointed out that Jesus did not come to bring unity but a sword. Believers are called to certain convictions that we can never compromise and that the world may never accept.

But I believe it is more important that I write to you about how to interface with a society that differs from us at such crucial points.

Some years ago I read about some of western people involved in the Chinese church's Back to Jerusalem Movement being amazed that they were not praying for the fall of the communist government. They were instead praying for God to work in it.

1 Peter 2:13-15 reads

"Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every Authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. For it is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men."

Paul wrote something nearly identical in Romans 13. These men lived in a world where Christians were already being persecuted. Paul appealed to Caesar when he was arrested in Jerusalem. But he stood up to the authorities who wanted to quietly release him and Silas in Ephesus.

How does that speak to us today? Could King George have been as wicked as Nero who burned Christians alive on poles to light his garden parties? How do we know which to do in the circumstances that we face today?

We need to begin by saying we will have to struggle with the issues that we face. There are no simple answers to modern questions.

We will have to struggle with right and wrong. It will not always be simple or obvious.

And we will need to struggle over our witness and the glory of God. This will include decency, integrity, humility, and honesty.

And most importantly, we must struggle to discern the will of God.

I basically agree with Francis Schaefer's statement in The Christian Manifesto that a government that breeches its calling by God should be overthrown. But I believe he missed a point in his argument. That is the issue of God's timing. When God told Abraham he was going to give his descendants the land of Canaan, He said they had not filled up their sins. Four hundred years would pass before God said it was time.

I don't know where we are in America. But I know it is the will of God to pray for our country and for our leaders by name and by need. And I will struggle in prayer and God's word over the issues of politics and voting and our country.

Where Revival Begins

The Scottish poet Robert Burns said it this way:

“Would some power give us the gift
To see ourselves as others see us!”

It’s a gift most of us need to receive more often. We all want to believe the best about ourselves. That’s natural, and it’s even healthy. But it’s also healthy to have someone hold the mirror in front of your face and say, “This is what you really look like.” It can be a very instructive experience.

Spiritual progress begins when we see ourselves as God sees us. It’s one thing when a friend says, “This is what you look like.” It’s another thing for God to utter those words. We can sometimes fool even our closest friends, but it’s impossible to fool the Lord. Hebrews 4:13 says, “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” He knows what we say behind closed doors, the secret thoughts no one else can hear, the hidden motives, the buried ambition, and all the twists and turns of our sinful nature. He doesn’t have to uncover our thoughts; he already knows them.

This is a sermon about revival. Let’s start with the word itself. You revive something when you bring it back to life. You can’t revive something that has never been alive in the first place. That’s why revival is different from evangelism. Evangelism is preaching the gospel to the lost that they might be saved. Revival awakens the saved from a state of spiritual slumber. When God sends revival, the church wakes up. Or to give a more formal definition, revival is the sovereign act of God, whereby he calls his backsliding people to repentance, faith, and new obedience to him.

I grew up in a church tradition that emphasized “revival meetings,” usually week-long gatherings where a visiting minister would challenge us spiritually. I can remember sitting with rapt attention as Angel Martinez preached night after night at the church where I grew up. That was at least 50 years ago. Probably the greatest move of God I’ve been part of happened during a youth revival in May 1970. Lives were changed forever by the decisions made that weekend. I say that so you’ll know I’m not speaking against “revival meetings.” Not at all. They can be greatly used of God. I simply point out that revival is a sovereign move of God that can’t be scheduled in advance.

Our text comes from 2 Chronicles 7:14, which is perhaps the most famous verse on revival in the Bible:

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

In the preceding verses the Lord lays out certain hard times that might come to the people of God. There might be a drought or a plague of locusts or an outbreak of disease in the land. 1 Kings 8 adds other times, such a crushing military defeat, or famine or blight or cities under siege by the enemy, or being sent into captivity. This verse is meant for God’s people whenever there is trouble in the land. The promise always applies, but in desperate times we need to pay close attention to verses like this.

2 Chronicles 7:14 was written for such a time as this. Let’s consider what it says under three headings.

I. The Subjects of Revival

“If my people, who are called by my name” (v. 14a).

These two phrases tell us this verse is limited to those who know the Lord. In this political season, when clergy of all stripes rush to support their preferred candidates, it’s important to remember 2 Chronicles 7:14 was not written to the Democrats or the Republicans. This is not a blanket invitation that applies to anyone, anywhere, at any time. God limits this invitation to those who are “his people.” This is not, for instance, a verse that applies to the Hindus. Nor does it apply to mankind in general. This promise applies to those who know Jesus and to no one else. To be called by the name of the Lord means you have called upon the name of the Lord to be saved (Romans 10:13).

II. The Conditions for Revival

“Will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways” (v. 14b).

Here are the four conditions for revival:

#1: Humility

What exactly is humility? Although many answers might be given, perhaps the simplest is that humility means seeing my true condition before God. After all, pride is simply taking credit for things that I’m not really responsible for. When we start feeling too puffed up about ourselves, we need to remember 1 Corinthians 4:7, “What do you have that you did not receive?” The answer is nothing. Not even Bill Gates can say, “I did this by myself.” To be sure, it took courage and ingenuity and commitment and perseverance to build Microsoft. Mr. Gates sits atop a multi-billion-dollar empire that didn’t happen by chance. Give that man all the credit he deserves. The same applies to every other successful man or woman in any field of endeavor. Kudos to anyone who has “made it” to the top. But just remember this. The strength to do the task, the intelligence to put together the plan, the skill to bring all the parts together, the courage to make it happen—all of it comes directly from God. It is true that between the richest man and the poorest man there is a great gulf in terms of worldly possessions. But on one point—the only one that counts—there is no difference. Both are alike the recipients of the grace of God. Neither man has anything to boast about. When we understand that, it changes the way we look at life, it changes the way we evaluate ourselves, and it changes the way we treat other people. If we are wise, it also changes our view of worldly success. We won’t base our self-image on our net worth when we believe God isn’t impressed with our bank account. We’ll have time for people because we understand we are all created by the same God.

#2: Prayer

What sort of prayer is the Lord talking about? It is the sincere prayer of a person who realizes his true condition. When I understand everything I have comes as a gift from God, my prayers will be filled with gratitude, love and praise. I will cry out to God, confessing how far short I fall of his divine standards. And every day I will remember the words of Jesus, “Without me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).

# 3: Seeking God’s Face

The phrase “seek my face” is a familiar one in the Old Testament. It has to do with the direction of my life. It is very similar to the fourth beatitude: “Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6). To seek God’s face is to hunger for a closer walk with him. Many of us know little of this because we fill our stomachs with spiritual junk food that never satisfies but keeps us from seeking nutritious food. The question is, what are you hungry for right now? Those who are hungry to know God seek one thing; those who are hungry for a career seek something else. What you are hungry for determines what you seek.

# 4: Turning from our Wicked Ways

At some point things have to change. We must repent. To repent means you turn from your wicked ways. You used to cheat on your wife, but now you don’t. You used to be lazy, but now you aren’t. You used to fill your mind with bitterness, but now you don’t. Once you were angry most of the day, but now you have turned away from anger. Once you were sloppy on the job when the boss wasn’t watching, but not anymore. Once you lived in lust for that which God has forbidden you to have, but not anymore. Once you lived to party on the weekends, but that life is part of your past. Whatever your wicked ways are, revival means turning from those ways to the ways that Please God. It means a definite break with the past and a deliberate change of direction.

If you think about it, these four conditions form a kind of progression:

You will never pray with any fervency until you see your true condition before God.
You will never seek God’s face until you begin to get serious about prayer.
You will never turn from your wicked ways until God becomes all-important in your life.

Humility leads to prayer. Prayer leads to seeking God’s face. Seeking God’s face leads to turning from our wicked ways.

III. The Results of Revival

“Then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land” (v. 14c).

We need to think carefully about this because it’s easy to turn 2 Chronicles 7:14 into a formula for revival. Certainly the verse lays out a plan for us to follow. The word “then” encourages us to believe our crying to God will never be in vain.

Our tears are not in vain.
Our prayers are not in vain.
Our burden is not in vain.
|Our sadness is not in vain.
Our desperation is not in vain.

Perhaps we can say it this way. When we are so dissatisfied with the status quo that we cry out to God for help, the answer will indeed come from heaven and things will begin to change. We must not limit God as to the how and the when. He is still the sovereign God who does whatever pleases him (Psalm 115:3). We must not dictate to the Lord about how the answer from heaven will come. He will answer in his own time, in his own way, according to his own will. But we have this assurance:

He will hear.
He will forgive.
He will heal.

If we do our part, though it will seem very incomplete, God will certainly do his. If we humble ourselves, and if we pray, and if we seek his face, and if we turn from our wicked ways, knowing all the while that we still fall short, God will move from heaven to come to our aid.

Politics is Not the Answer

This verse gives me hope because we seem to be in a bad state today. I cannot remember a time when America was more divided than we are at this moment. As a nation, we have turned away from the Lord. How will we ever find our way back to God?

The answer won’t come from the White House.
Politics will not save us.
Putting another justice on the Supreme Court won’t heal our land.

I say that in full recognition that it matters greatly how we vote because it matters who sits in the White House and makes those judicial appointments. We have to vote. I’m all for speaking out and taking a stand.

But when all is said and done, our greatest need is not political; our greatest need is spiritual. We need another great awakening in our land. Perhaps it will come in our day. I certainly hope so. Perhaps we will see another Layman’s Prayer Movement sweep our nation. I’m certainly encouraged by the thousands who have come to the various state capitals to pray with Franklin Graham. I’m very glad about the hundreds of thousands who came to the National Mall in Washington, D.C. for the “Together 2016” event. Later this year a number of ministries are planning different events to call the church to prayer. I urge you to get involved in praying with others for revival. Across the nation churches have come together to pray in response to the shootings that have taken place. This is all to the good.

Praying in the Last Days

Let me add one final thought. I believe we are living in the last days before the coming of the Lord. It certainly seems like the “terrible times” of 2 Timothy 3:1 have come true in our generation. I don’t have any secret information about the date of the Lord’s return. I’m simply giving my observation on the basis of what the Bible says about the last days.

What if Jesus is coming soon? What difference should that make to us? Can we still expect a move of God in the last days of human history? With all my heart, I believe the answer is yes. Take a quick look at Luke 18:1-8, which we call the Parable of the Persistent Widow. Most of us know the story about the judge who gave the widow what she wanted because she wore him out by coming back again and again. It’s an easy-to-grasp lesson on the importance of persistence when we pray. That much is obvious. But here’s the kicker. Jesus ends the story this way: “Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?” (Luke 18:8). Where did that come from? This isn’t a parable about the second coming. It’s about prayer. But Jesus applies it to the situation on the earth when he returns.

What’s up with that?

We need to read this against the larger New Testament teaching that in the last days there will be a huge turning away from the Lord. It is sometimes called the “apostasy” or the “falling away.” You can read about it in Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21 and 2 Thessalonians 2. As we rush headlong toward the return of Christ, we should expect to see exactly what is happening today:

False Christs.
Spiritual counterfeits.
Christians compromising their faith.
Pastors turning away from the truth.
Spiritual leaders who mislead the flock of God.

As the foundations of society crumble beneath us, we will see this happening more and more. All these things are just the “beginning of sorrows” (Matthew 24:8).

We ought to read Luke 18:9 in light of those passages. In a world where truth has become entirely subjective, where feelings trump biblical commands, where we reinterpret the Bible to justify our sin, Jesus’ poignant question takes on a deeper meaning:

When the Son of Man comes…

Will he find faith in your church?
Will he find faith in your family?
Will he find faith in your heart?

While going through my files, I found the notes from the final sermon I preached at the first church I pastored after seminary. On that parting Sunday I told the people, “I have some prayers I have prayed for a long time.” I listed a number of requests I had brought before the Lord. My notes say I had just talked with someone whose marriage was in trouble because of an enslaving habit. They were in despair and needed a place to live. No name is written down, and I can honestly say that 33 years later, I have no idea who I was praying for back then. But I added this…

“Not all my prayers have been answered… yet!!!”

As we journey along through life, there will always be some prayers that haven’t been answered yet. Will we give up or will we keep praying? That’s what Jesus means when he asks, “When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”

Will he find anyone still believing or will everyone turn away?
Will he find faithful believers who still pray as the world self-destructs?

We can make sure the answer is yes. We can do our part by praying persistently, unitedly, fervently, joyfully, and faithfully. I believe those end-time prayers will have great power with the Lord because they are offered in the face of persecution, ridicule, and rising unbelief.

God will not let those prayers go to waste.

Start by Looking in the Mirror

So where does revival begin? The answer is always the same. It begins with you and it begins with me. It’s one thing to talk about what stands between our nation and revival or between my church and revival. It’s always easier to confess someone else’s sins. Ask God what stands between you and a new experience of his power and blessing. If you ask in sincerity, God will surely answer.

Do we have to stay the way we are? The answer is, “No, but." We have to start by understanding “the way we are.” Once we see that, the possibility of genuine change and real spiritual growth is open to us. So I end where I began. Revival is not far away when we see ourselves as God sees us. It’s easy to say, “America needs to get right with God” or “My neighbor needs changing” or “My church needs revival.” Those statements can become excuses for evading our own responsibility.

The call of Christ is always personal. He calls us one by one to follow him. Perhaps we should repeat the Chinese prayer that goes this way: “O Lord, change the world. Begin, I pray thee, with me.” Revival begins with the person you see when you look in the mirror. Start there and by God’s grace revival will begin inside your own heart.

9651027076?profile=original9651027076?profile=originalWill your Family want your Jesus? Guest blog b y Rebecca Buckner Recently, I attended the funeral service of the mother of one of my good friends. The room was full but what impressed me so deeply was the testimony of her children. Time was not spent on her accomplishments, which, by the way, happened to be worth mentioning but the words spoken were a picture of her heart. I am not sure whether this was their original intent as they crafted their speeches. However, I have a feeling that as they began to describe who their mother was, the depth and breadth of the love for Jesus in her heart became their theme. An affection of love overflowed with tender words from these adult children as they spoke of their mother’s faith. I had ever met this woman but I knew in my heart that I wanted to be like her. As I listened to her children beautifully describe the mother and grandmother that had so impressed their hearts, I knew I wanted to have that same impact on my children and grandchildren. And then, I had an “Aha” moment. It was Jesus that so attracted me to this woman I had never met! It wasn’t her life that was so attractive; it was Jesus living through her that drew me to her. As a result, her children were portraying how their mother’s life was an outpouring of Jesus’ love for them and their families. I want to be like Jesus! I have a deep longing to live out my days in intimacy with my Savior. Proverbs 27:19 says, “As a face is reflected in water, so the heart reflects the real person.” What does the reflection of my “real person” look like? Do people see Jesus in me? Is my present commitment to meditate and know God’s Word enough to transform my life into one that truly reflects Jesus to my children and grandchildren? Is my investment in my spiritual growth and walk with the Lord one that will leave a spiritual legacy when I am no longer here? Do I demonstrate my faith as I walk with God through the storms and disappointments of life as well as the sunny days? Does God want me to make some adjustments in how I spend my time to better fulfill His purposes? Do I display an authenticity and sincerity in my relationship with God? Do I want my children and grandchildren to imitate my spiritual life? God is calling me to examine the deepest crevices of my heart. Will they want my Jesus? “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in truth.” 3 John 1:4 Rebecca is a wife to Terry, mother of two, and grandmother of two. She lives on the lake and enjoys mornings and evenings on the porch, watching the wildlife and admiring God's creation. She is a prayer team member of the Christian Grandparenting Network and is passionate about leaving a spiritual legacy for her family.

Re-painted and Revived

Last week I was on the Island of Roatan, a part of Honduras. It is an island of beautiful colored houses and buildings. When asked about the colors, my guide said everyone who can afford it re-paints their house or place of business every year. It is not only a way to resist the elements of the wind and salt water, but a way to show pride in what they have. This idea was also displayed on the front wall of the auditorium of the oldest church on the island, a church that was the only building on the island to withstand a long-ago hurricane. The sign read, “A time for renewal.” The Psalmist said it this way, “I am afflicted very much; Revive me, O Lord, according to Your word” (Psalm 119:107). I can’t re-paint myself every year, but I can allow God to revive me. How about you?

NATIONAL UNITY 1

I have been alarmed of late over the bitterness and seriousness of our national disunity in America. A few elections back I thought I was being funny by asking people who they were going to vote against for president. I stopped asking that because no one thought it was a joke.  Of course this is not restricted to America. Much of the world suffers from similar or worse political divisiveness. This is a dangerous fact about our world.

I have longed for a president who wanted to use the bully pulpit to bring us nearer to national unity. But for those of us who are serious about the Bible and faith in Jesus, I need to admit to a different perspective. In Matthew 10:34 Jesus warned us that He did not come to bring peace but a sword. If we follow Jesus, many things about us will offend others.

Many today will find our morals offensive. I want to say it lovingly and wisely, but I will have to stand against the murder of over a million innocents a year by the practice of abortion. I am going to have to tell people that I love that homosexual behavior is sinful and homosexual marriage unnatural.

Some will find our thinking offensive no matter how gently and respectfully we express it. Ideas have conclusions. And our thinking will go counter to worldly thinking. That is why we see some of the thinking of our founding fathers being rejected by society and ignored by bodies like the Supreme Court.

Some will even be offended by the gospel. It will offend some people that their own righteousness will never save them. Others will be offended that a wicked person can be forgiven.

What are we to do? We should pray for unity in our country. I believe we would be foolish and disobedient if we did not. But there are issues in America where we will have to stand with our Lord even against unity in our country.

I have more to say on this subject. There are things we can do to work for unity. But lest I take away from what I have written here, I need to wait until next week to deal with them. In the meantime, I encourage you to think about what Jesus said.

How prayer can stop terrorism

First of all, prayer changes things as long as we believe in the power and effectiveness of the prayer offered in faith. We read in James 5:17-18 that “Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops”. The remarkable story of Jabez, a man borne with sorrow, in 1 Chronicles 4:9-10 provides a compelling testimony to the wonders of faith and prayer. “Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, “I gave birth to him in pain.” Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, “Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request.”

In Mark 4:35-41, Christ’s disciples were probably enjoying the voyage to the region of the Gerasenes (Mark 5: 1) when unexpectedly a storm interrupted, turning their comfort and excitement into a nightmare. In the midst of their fears and uncertainty, they reached out to the Master for help. We read that: “Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm” (Mark 4: 38-39). As emotional human beings we are not immune to the feelings and fears from a dreadful situation. However, we must recognize that God cares for our safety and success. Our responsibility is not to question His wonderful care but to handle the fearful, difficult situation with faith and prayer. No wonder Christ, after calming the storm, said to His disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (Mark 4:40). We must use faith and prayer to deal with our fears without questioning God’s care for us (1 Peter 5:7).

Terrorism is an act of evil.  The Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 5: 6-13 recognizes the need for divine help to overcome evil (verse 13).  Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 that “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” A person’s thought life and deeds are functions of the spatial and temporal conditions of his/her heart. Matthew 15:19 reads that “For out of the heart comes evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.” We have the responsibility in line with 1Timothy 2: 1-2 to pray for hearts to be changed or renewed for peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. “This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all people” (1Timothy 2:1-6).

In conclusions, we must pray with faith, fervency and persistence. In praying we must ask God to: (1) demolish all strongholds responsible for terrorism; (2) help our communities, leaders, and all those in authority in their efforts to thwart terrorism and foster peace; (3) touch and change hearts to shun evil, embrace truth, love, and peace.  We believe in the power and effectiveness of the prayer of faith. We believe in the name of the Son of God through whom we have eternal life. “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of Him” (1 John 5: 14-15). Thank you for reading and God bless.

Jasim was hosting his friends from the neighborhood in his majlis (sitting room) at home.  They were all welcomed with coffee and dates followed by something special. It was the Oud passed on to every guest. The scent of the Oud filled the majlis. "It's wonderful. Where did you get this from?" asked Saoud.  "I bet it's Cambodian. Truly, the scent of heaven. I wish the scent could remain forever." said Ahmed.  "Yes, Cambodian indeed. I got this on my recent trip there. It's called the Kina, a very rare and expensive form of Oud." said Jassim.

Oud forms an integral part of Arabian hospitality and culture. It has been traditionally called the "Scent of Heaven".  As demand surges in the Gulf for its use, its cost has also increased manifold. The price of the best quality Oud is at par with the rate of gold in the market. However, supply has been diminishing due to the scarce availability of the Agar wood tree that produces the Oud in the wild, making it rare and expensive.

To truly savor the scent of Oud, the wooden chips of the Agar wood tree have to be burned. It is only when the wood is completely burned that the true fragrance of the Oud is released. How sad!  We pay so much for it.

We wish that the smell of Oud can remain forever, but over time, even the scent of heaven can die out. No scent of this world can last. We can only truly be satisfied with a scent that is indeed sent from heaven, that which is not produced from nature.  Is there such a heavenly scent?  Yes!  The best thing about this scent is that although it is heavenly and expensive, it is free for all us who choose to use it.

Two thousand and sixteen years ago, a Man came to offer us this eternal fragrance. He offered to make us pure and clean with the real scent of heaven.  Just like how the wooden chips of an Agar wood tree are burned to get the scent, the Lord Jesus Christ was burned completely on the cross through his crucifixion to pay the penalty of our sins which were laid upon him.  His death became a sweet smelling aroma to God. Today, we can experience the scent of that lasting Oud by faith in Him. All the scents of this world will only give us an external fragrance. But if we savor this heavenly scent, we will be filled to radiate the fragrance of Christ's scent to those around us. (2 Corinthians 2:14-17)

Please pray that the Arabs of the AP will experience the true, living, and eternal Oud - Jesus Christ himself!

If you have read my blogs and Face book postings I am sure you have noticed that I am passionate about praying for my grandchildren in my writings. I recognize the critical moral and spiritual environment my grandchildren must navigate in a world hostile to truth.

Recently Franklin Graham wrote, “Our nation is in serious trouble—we are in desperate need of Divine intervention. We need healing. Prayer is what can make a difference in America.”

Our grandchildren are growing up in a world that is not friendly to our faith in God. However, I feel God has given grandparents a sacred trust and a responsibility to imprint the next generation with His faithfulness. That is why we at Christian Grandparenting Network are calling grandparents worldwide to unite in prayer by participating in the Million Praying Grandparents campaign.

You may ask, “What is the Million Praying Grandparents campaign?” Million Praying Grandparents (MPG) is an imitative mobilizing Christian grandparents worldwide to regularly and intentionally unite in prayer for their grandchildren, families, and the influences in their grandchildren’s lives.

For the sake of the hearts, minds and souls of your grandchildren, will you say, “Yes! I will be one of the Million Praying Grandparents uniting in prayer.” Click on www.millionprayinggrandparents.com to sign up to participate in the campaign.

When you join the Million Praying Grandparents you will receive a FREE Prayer Guide of “Scriptures to Pray” designed to help you pray for your grandchildren.  Would you help us promote the Million Praying Grandparents initiative by sharing this post with your friends on social media and "like" its fan page? https://www.facebook.com/GrandparentDayOfPrayer

One of my favorite songs is "Find us Faithful" sung by Steve Green, who challenges us to leave footprints of God's faithfulness to those who come behind us. I hope you will listen to this song and find it challenging to leave a legacy to your grandchildren.

PRAYING FOR EMERGENCIES II

I am writing a second WATCHING IN PRAYER blog this week, rather than my THINKING IN THE SPIRIT blog. I apologize to you who may prefer the other. I intend to return to Thinking in The Spirit next week.

Thank God, I did not receive another Amber Alert this week. But this week a series of national tragedies unfolded. Two more black Americans were shot by police officers. That is a tragedy whether those two armed men or the policemen were in the wrong. Who can defend either all police who see every black man as a threat or people who grow up with hatred and resentment toward police.

And who of us was not horrified by the sniper who shot eleven police officers who were helping to keep the crowd safe at the protest rally in Dallas. We heard person after person who had come to the rally to protest police shootings, as they cried out in shock against the murder of the peace officers.

We face a host of national emergencies in these days. We see moral and spiritual emergencies in America. The political and social divisions are a crisis in. And who would say our sins have not offended the holiness of God who has so richly blessed us?

The first thing we must do in the face emergencies is cry out to God. The Lord told Abraham as He sent the angels to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. And Abraham interceded for the wicked cities. Are you interceding for America? Are you searching for ways to intercede in accordance with the righteousness of God? Are you crying out for the power of God that alone can turn our hearts around? Are you praying for God's glory to be magnified by His intervention in our government, in our institutions, in the police, in the media, in our neighborhoods, in our churches, in our homes, and in our lives? I am praying for an army of prayer warriors who will cry out to God night and day for our nation.

M, is waiting in the line at Starbucks while his sister and mother shop, and he allows a new friend to treat him for his cup of tea.  He says with a smile that now that the university has started its summer break, he is used as the permanent driver for the ladies in his house. During the conversation he speaks of a wish for a chance to continue studies in another country.  "More time for me, and less demands to the tasks/duties that are upon a young man, who is part of a large family with lots of family obligations".

As the conversations turns to his ideas about sin, and he is surprised to hear some stories of the Bible. He learns that some of his prophetic heroes are  involved in sinful behaviors. He makes a striking comment, "Am I perhaps being taught the wrong information?" The normal response would have been to reject a different opinion, but he seemed to be willing to consider others.  Since that conversation, via what's app he has received some of those biblical stories so he can read them for himself.   Trusting that this was an encounter arranged by God, please pray for M that he will respond to God's call to follow Him.

Pray for lady who is "liked minded" and found her husband reading the Book. He doesn't know that his wife believes and says he is not a follower. Pray that the Lord will reveal Himself to this man as he reads the Scriptures. Pray that he will believe and that this couple will grow together in faith.

Life in camps for displaced people and refugees can be very difficult as people deal with high temperatures in the summer, poor health and against corruption. Pray for the safety in all three. Pray that God would bring believers to minister to the people and that a "person of peace" will emerge.

Pray for young ladies who have gone through trauma during the war and are sharing their stories with those who love the Savior. Pray that as they listen to Truth from the Word, they will hear what the Father wants to share with them and be healed.

Pray for the new believers that they will know the hope God gives and be strengthened by the Holy Spirit. Pray that they will hunger for God's Word, desire to grow and share the Good News with others.

Pray for believers who are persecuted by family and others, that they will know the love of God more deeply.  Pray that God would surround them with a new family of believers who will love them and support them emotionally as well as physically.

Pray for those in Saudi Arabia and around the world, to know that true security in face of terrors of suicide bombing lies in knowing the One who promises true eternal life.
"Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.  I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.... his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.  You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. - Psalm 91:1-6

PRAYING FOR EMERGENCIES I

I intend to post two watching in prayer blogs in a row, rather than alternating next week with my THINKING IN THE SPIRIT blog. So this is PRAYING FOR EMERGENCIES I.

This week I received an Amber Alert on my phone. This is a new function of my phone. In fact, after I received it I got a message asking if I wanted to receive such messages in the future. I automatically keyed in "yes." But, of course part of me wanted to say, "No!" I don't ever want there to be kidnapped children. I can rejoice that that day will come. But until that day I want to know about such terrors so I can pray as they unfold.

Of course an Amber Alert or a screaming siren, even a honking horn can be a distraction. We are tempted to try to find out what is happening. That of course is natural. But let me suggest that we start praying before we do anything else.

Romans 12:12 is one of those Scriptures that God has often used to speak to me. The King James Version concludes that verse with the words, "continuing instant in prayer." William Carrie said he was able to bring people on the mission field to Christ because God helped him be "instant in prayer." Our English word, "instant" comes to us through Middle English and French from the Latin, "in stare," which meant to stand at the ready."

The secret to being instant in prayer is to be immersed in prayer. If I am already praying when I hear the alarm, I will automatically pray for the urgency.

PTAP: Fasting

Yesterday, I did a water only fast most of the day, as planned. The Lord opened up numerous opportunities to serve others and share the good news of Jesus and that Jesus is the way. At the end of the day, I had the opportunity to share a teaching with a friend via phone about what fasting is all about. (2 Chronicles 7:14).

This morning as I left the house, I observed that it had rained after a season of drought. Lesson: God still answers prayer and is still a miracle working God, like He always has been. He is waiting for us to pray.

Please consider praying for the reign of God and agricultural abundance for the sake of the poor in the Arabian Peninsula as people turn to the Lord Jesus.
