Morning by Morning, December 3 - Changing My Heart, Renewing My Mind

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Fill my heart and order my steps into Your will to walk in Your ways throughout the moments of my day -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God.  ...

"The heart is devious above all else; it is perverse -- who can understand it? I the Lord test the mind and search the heart, to give to all according to their ways, according to the fruit of their doings.... Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me; and I shall be saved; for You are my praise" (Jeremiah 17:9-14).

Thank You for the power of Your grace that changes my heart and renews my mind. You create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me (Psalm 51:10). You transform me by the renewing of my mind (Romans 12:2). You put Your thoughts in my mind and Your desires in my heart, giving me both the desire and the power to do what pleases You, secure in my identity as a child of God in whom You take pleasure (Philippians 2:13).

You have saved me and You keep on saving me. You have healed me and You keep on healing me. You are conforming me into the image of the Son of God (Romans 8:29). You are filling me more and more with Your Spirit and giving me more and more of Your nature (Ephesians 5:18). As I seek You and behold You, as I humble my heart to keep welcoming You into my heart, as I open my mind to keep receiving the mind of Christ, You keep changing my heart and my mind, You keep changing me to be more like You every day -- "being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord" (2 Corinthians 3:18 NKJV).

By the power of Your grace at work within me, "I am certain that God, who began a good work within (me)" will be faithful to complete it, "will continue His work until it is finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns" (Philippians 1:6 NLT). So here's my heart, Lord; here's my mind, Lord. Fill me, change me, renew me, conform me, and complete me -- step by step, morning by morning, moment by moment, on my journey to become all You've created me to be (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, I pray you keep opening your heart and your mind to the One who is at work in you by the power of His grace to make you more like Him every day, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Pray Christmas - Day 3

9651037469?profile=original

Praying 25 Days of Christmas

December 3

  • Background to today’s prayer

    • You realize that there is very real meaning to Christ’s coming to earth!

    • It wasn’t just a “heavenly-experiment.”

    • He had a purpose.

    • Because we had a need!

    • And because He met our need, we received His image!

    • Does that not stir something inside of you?

    • Oh, I pray this season that it does.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Lord, Paul says that the second Adam came to earth, because the first Adam failed (Romans 5:14-15). Lord thank You that by Your great love and mercy You saw fit to allow us, though having “borne the image of the earthy,” we also, because of Your Son, and after we are saved, bear the image of the heavenly (1 Corinthians 15:49). Lord, teach me to submit always to Your Son, allowing Him to live through me…as someone has said, the only one who can live the Christian life is Christ. Father, I desire that Christ always live through me (Romans 6:11).

Pray Christmas - Day 2

Praying 25 Days of Christmas

December 2

  • Background to today’s prayer

    • How big is your God?

    • Is He the creator who is unfathomable?

    • And if He is, how in-the-world could He have given up all that He did, to become incarnate in a baby’s body?

    • I have no clue!

    • But I want to know…as best I can,

    • I want to understand all that my Savior gave up in coming to earth.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Lord, as I think of the Son’s pre-incarnate existence, I am reminded that the One who walked here on terra firma is the One who spoke the words and the worlds leapt into existence. John 1:3 tells us that nothing was made and created, that was not made or created by Him. And still, He gave up all of heaven, to come here that I might spend eternity with Him. Lord, I accept that, and am grateful for that, but I surely do not understand it. Lord, by Your grace, teach me to know what Your Son gave up, to come to earth, those 2000 years ago. Teach me to appreciate what coming to earth cost Him. Teach me to love others, as best I can, as close to the way Your Son demonstrated His love for us. And Lord, teach me, as best  as I am able to know, what the cross cost my Lord Christ.

Pray Christmas - Day 1

Praying 25 Days of Christmas

December 1

  • Background to today’s prayer

    • There is an underlying foundation to these prayers, and it is the same now, as it was when I wrote these a few years ago.

    • And that foundation that the Lord originally laid upon my heart, and has recently burdened me with again, is a foundation of brokenness.

    • Broken for the things that God’s heart breaks for.

    • This Christmas season let us watch how the Lord moves on our heart.

    • And yet, with brokenness will come the need for compassion and comfort

TODAY’S PRAYER

Lord, as we begin this 25 Days of Prayer, we are reminded that the Son You sent to earth to be our Saviour, is the Way the Truth and the Life (John 14:6). By Your mercy bring us to the end of ourselves so that all we seek is You. And Lord I pray for all of those that will be moved to seek Your Son, as they watch us handle being brought to the end of ourselves. Give us a loving, compassionate heart, that reaches out to our hurting brothers and sisters, comforting them so that they do not face excessive sorrow (2 Corinthians 2:7). Lord, too many abandon the faith as You teach them brokenness. So, teach us to encourage one another, that we and our brothers and sisters are not hardened by the deceitfulness of sin (Hebrews 3:13).

Morning by Morning, November 30 - "First Place in Everything"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. It's all about You. So I seek to begin my day centered in Your Word and filled with Your Spirit. ...

"He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in Him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers -- all things have been created through Him and for Him. He Himself is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He might come to have first place in everything. For in Him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through Him God was pleased to reconcile to Himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace the blood of His cross" (Colossians 1:15-20).

Do You "have first place in everything" in me? Do I seek You first? Do I put Your first? Do I live my life throughout the moments of my day with no other gods before me, with no idols in Your place, with no compromised in my "sincere and pure devotion to Christ"? (2 Corinthians 11:3) ...

As I sense Your leading to honestly lay the question before You this morning, it seems I hear You speaking in my heart, "Honestly, no. You do not. Nor can you completely, sincerely, purely, and fully. No one can. Even in this, you need My grace. Especially in this, you need My power of My grace to be at work in your heart and your mind to seek Me and surrender to Me, to passionately pursue Me and allow Me to make your heart more pure and more wholly devoted to Me. But is it My great desire and delight to answer your prayer and move in your heart every time you turn to Me and invite Me to move in you. This is a life-long journey, with breakthroughs along the way. And I breakthrough more deeply as you surrender more deeply to Me."  ...

Yes, Lord. I want to love You and surrender to You and Your love for me with "an undivided heart," with "my whole heart" so "turn to me and be gracious to me" (Psalm 86:11-16). I want to "love the Lord (my) God with all (my) heart, and with all (my) soul, and with all (my) mind, and with all (my) strength" (Mark 12:30). I want to hold nothing back from You, wholly devoted to You, completely surrendered to You. I want You to be first, to "come to have first place in everything" in me -- all by the power of Your grace at work within me.

You are "the Alpha and the Omega, the Frist and the Last, the Beginning and the End" (Revelation 22:12). You are my "All in All," as All in One -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God (Ephesians 1:23; 1 Corinthians 15:28). So as best as I can and all by Your grace, I choose to keep turning my heart to You and inviting You to keep moving in me on this life-long journey of faith in You and Your love for me, with breakthroughs of deeper surrender all along the way. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, I pray you keep turning your heart to Jesus and inviting Him to keep moving in you to trust more fully and surrender more deeply to Him as the One with first place in everything in you -- all by the power of His grace, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Morning by Morning, November 29 - "What Christ Has Done"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I open my heart to hear Your Word and respond to Your Holy Spirit from the embrace of my Father's arms, here in the communion of prayer to begin my day.  ...

"Yet I dare not boast about anything except what Christ has done through me, bringing the Gentiles to God by my message and by the way I worked among them. They were convinced by the power of miraculous signs and wonders and by the power of God's Spirit. In this way, I have fully presented the Good News of Christ from Jerusalem all the way to Illyricum" (Romans 15:18-19 NLT).

My boast is what You have done through me -- not what I have done for You, not what I have done for myself, but only what You have done through me. That's the boast of our hearts, our pride and joy -- "what Christ has done."

By the power of Your Spirit, You amaze us and encourage us with Your "signs and wonders" and even with Your signs that make us wonder, that make us dig deeper, that make us press in harder to take hold of Your Word and let Your Spirit take hold of us.

And whether our divine assignment and sphere of influence is between Jerusalem and Illyricum, between Dallas and Austin, between my street and Main street, or between the coffee pot and the copy machine, You're presenting Your Good News through us every day. You're sharing hope, releasing peace, exuding love, and stirring up joy through the message of our lives and the way we live them out by the power of Your grace in us. These are "signs and wonders" indeed, in the midst of all the chaos and confusion, the frustration and anger, the darkness and discouragement we tend to encounter in the mission field of our world every day.

But You show up and You show off. You display Your glory and shine with the light of Your love. You change the spiritual atmosphere in our hearts and then, through our hearts, You change the spiritual atmosphere around the hearts of everyone we encounter. That's how we make a difference every day. That's how our lives matter. And that's how we can boast in "what Christ has done" while we get excited to begin our day in expectant faith of what Christ will do! In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, I pray you make a difference today as you change the spiritual atmosphere around every heart you encounter by the power of the Spirit of Christ in you, boasting in all that Christ has done and excited to see what Christ will do, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Morning by Morning, November 27 -- Abounding in Hope

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Direct my thoughts and guide my steps in the path of Your will today -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God.  ...

"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit" (Romans 15:13).

You fill me with hope and joy and peace. You fill me with the power and the presence of Your Holy Spirit. And then You pour me out like a stream of life and a river of living water, as You bring hope and joy and peace to every life You touch through mine. Together in Christ, we are Your river of life, Your fountain of hope, wellspring of joy, and Your stream of peace.

Thank You for the gift of being part of Your gift of healing and hope, of encouragement and strength, of love and life through Christ in our world. It gives me great joy to "abound in hope" with expectant faith to see what You will do through us in our world today. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

PTAP: New Believers

Dave learned that his national friend, Adam, had become a believer about two years ago. Adam was disillusioned with Islam while still a teenager and started investigating religions. He found Jesus and the Bible to be historically valid, unlike the others. Dave heard him tell of faith in Jesus alone for salvation, and of several others in his prominent bedouin tribe who had also believed in Jesus. Pray for their growth both individually, and that their faith would spread to others.

Morning by Morning, November 26 - Uplifted and Upheld in the Right Hand of God

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Be at the center of my heart and in the middle of every moment of my day.  ...

"But you, Israel, My servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, the offspring of Abraham, My friend; you whom I took from the ends of the earth, and called from its farthest corners, saying to you, 'You are My servant, I have chosen you and not cast you off'; do not fear, for I am with you, do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with My victorious right hand.... You shall seek those who contend with you, but you shall not find them; those war against you shall be as nothing at all. For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, 'Do not fear, I will help you'" (Isaiah 41:8-13).

Even the chosen face our challenges. Even the blessed endure our battles. We have no immunity from trails and troubles as we journey though this broken and fallen world. You didn't promise us a paradise with no problems; You promised us that You would be with us through every problem. You promised us You would strengthen us and help us and uphold us through them all. And so You do. You always come through and always get us through.

Lord, You already see every battle I'll fight and every challenge I'll face. You've already gone before me and You're already right here with me. So by the power of Your grace, I will not fear and I will move forward. And by the power of Your grace, even everything I face will be an opportunity to overcome and another lesson to learn how to keep putting my trust in the One who always comes through.

"I keep the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand (and I am in His), I shall not be moved. Therefore, my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices; my body also rests secure. For you do not give me up to Sheol, or let Your faithful one see the Pit. You show me the path of life. In Your presence there is fullness of joy; in Your right hand are pleasures forevermore" (Psalm 16:8-11). In Your mighty, victorious, and righteous right hand where You set things right in Your time and in Your way, I am uplifted and upheld, encouraged and empowered, strengthened and secure. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

WATCH AND PRAY

Have you ever seen a medieval castle? Have you noticed the broken lines at the tops of the walls? A rook or castle on a Chessboard has the same cuts.

I suspect you could guess what those were if you didn't already know. They were essential to the defense of a castle. Those slots were the lookouts for soldiers on watch.

On several occasions Scripture tells us to watch and pray. Have you thought about what God is saying to you in those passages? Let's look at those Scriptures and allow God to speak to our hearts through them. The first of them that comes to my mind is when Jesus was praying with His disciples in the garden before the cross. He prayed earnestly that that cup might pass from Him. And yet He surrendered His heart to the will of God. Then He looked and saw that Peter, James, and John were asleep. He was amazed that they could not watch with Him for one hour. And in Matthew 26:41 Jesus commands us.

“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

The word translated, “watch” here is also used for soldiers, or possibly shepherds, keeping the watches of the night. On that very night while they were in the garden soldiers would come to arrest Jesus. This would be the most severe trial that the disciples would ever face. Earlier Jesus had told them they would all abandon Him. Peter and the rest swore they would never leave Him even if they had to die with Him. Their spirits were willing but their flesh was weak.

You might say they should have known this trial was coming. Jesus had told them over and over again. And it didn't take any great genius to see that the High Priests had determined to kill Him.

And it it should not surprise you that you are going to face trials and temptations. Peter himself warns us that we are going to be tried. In 1 Peter 4:12 he wrote,

“Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.”

Like soldiers on guard duty we are told to watch and pray for spiritual strength and protection.

The next place we are told to watch and pray is in Luke 21 where Jesus warns us about the trials that will come in the last days. In Luke 21:36 Jesus gives us this same command.

“Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”

It seems to me that many of these things are already coming upon us. I am crying out to God for a great prayer movement. We need to be on guard, and pray as we have never prayed before. These things could be seen to begin when the Roman General, Titus, led his army to destroy the city of Jerusalem. As Jesus predicted, not one stone of the beautiful temple was left upon another. 2 Timothy 3:1 and other Scriptures warn us that there will be terrible times in these last days. Will we be on guard as these things come about? How seriously will we watch and pray?

We are also to watch for our hope in God during difficult times. He has made very great and precious promises to us even for the worst of times.

Another place where we are called to watch and pray is much more positive. Colossians 4:2 says,

“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.”

We not only need to watch for spiritual attack that will come. But I am afraid we are not alert enough to see God at work around us. There is great encouragement and joy in seeing the hand of God and thanking Him for working in our lives.

Finally, we need to watch and pray for others in our families and in the church where God has stationed us. Ephesians 6:18 commands us.

“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”

In 1 Samuel 12:23 Samuel said he would be sinning against the Lord if he failed to pray for the people of Israel. Are you alert to pray for those God has commissioned you to pray for?

We need to see watching as motivation and preparation for prayer. But all four of these passages see watching as integral to prayer. As we spend extended time in prayer God shows us more and more of what we will face and what He is doing and preparing to do all around us.

Should You Analyze Your Prayers?

Phil,
Is it a good idea to analyze or study one's own prayers to become more effective?
I have gotten different feedback from my Christian friends most of them negative.
From your point of view, Is this a worthy endeavor?"

It seems To Me . . .

  • Evaluating your own prayers in order to congratulate yourself ("I give myself a 9 out of 10!") or to review and edit them so they sound eloquent or scholarly - not a good idea. We do not trust in our prayers. I disagree with the statement: "prayer works." Instead we trust in the God to whom we pray. Many religions pray but to whom are they praying? Many pagans "pray" longer or "better" than I do. Prayer doesn't work; the one to whom we pray, works. When we pray. Its a partnership.
  • I do believe it is valuable to analyze your prayer habits and patterns as long as you use Scripture as the model. Study your praying to discern if you are praying correct theology. Analyze your prayers by comparing them to Daniel (chapter 9) and Paul (almost each of his epistles); certainly Jesus' teachings about prayer.
  • For those who disagree, why is it a good idea to reimagine our worship ("sing a new song") or think differently about our evangelism methods but not a good idea when it comes to praying? The quest to pray like Jesus is a lifelong journey toward maturity that would greatly benefit from a review that refreshes our praying. Maybe the one who benefits most is God, as our silly repetitions or simplistic requests fade into a conversation that is birthed in the heart of our Father in heaven, discerned through the leading of the Holy Spirit, and empowered by the name of Jesus.
  • One more comment. Maybe the question should be: "Is it wise to have others in the Body of Christ help me analyze my praying?" Corporate praying is a test of our personal prayer life (which, sadly, is why so many long-term Christians are silent in group prayer). If you are in a group with believers who truly trust in God, express their love for Jesus and are yielded to the Holy Spirit, then ask them "How can I improve my prayer life? What are my strengths? (in other words, what spiritual gifts flow out through your prayers; what fruit of the Spirit is most evident when you are praying?) What are my weaker habits? (you repeat "_____ _____" twenty times in every prayer)
  • Start here:
    • Ask - the Lord to teach you to pray more fervently and effectively (James 5:16)
    • Seek - be still and listen for the leading of the Holy Spirit
    • Knock - when you are clear as to his leading, follow into scripture or a study guide or a conversation with someone who can mentor you in prayer

Recieve This Day!

God has chosen this day for you! He chooses to give you good things today as you seek Him and praise Him in your devotions! He is ready and waiting to show you pleasure and peace in ways you have yet to discover. He is waiting for His people to come to Him in prayer and praise. Praise His holy name today and every day! Pray for His guidance, His mercy and peace.  He will honor your requests and bless you with these things! God is waiting to bless you! He showed me this morning that He is on His throne holding a golden bottle filled with the oil of gladness, waiting to pour it out over His people. He loves to fill our hearts with peace and joy! In order to receive this great gift, you must call upon Him to deliver you from the enemy, then walk in His ways, receive His mercy and pray for your freedom. You must turn from your evil ways of thinking and living. You must ready yourself to receive His goodness.

Do not allow yourself to wander the earth with envy or anger. Do not choose to hurt others. Instead, you must bless your enemies, greet those who hate you with a smile and love in your heart. Show them God’s love for them and forgive them for their ignorance. Then you will be blessed. Then you will receive the golden oil from the bottle only held by the one and only true God. Be blessed today as you receive this word and as you carry out His mission. Let God show you His mercy, His Love and His plan for you to prosper and receive His blessings.

Take this day to praise God and love your enemy!

But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. Matthew 5: 44 NIV

From Grumbling to Glory

9651036659?profile=original“. . . I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth” (Psalm 34:1 NASB)

Why do you suppose we most often refer to David as the “psalmist”? It’s true 73 of the “songs” are attributed to him, but that’s less than half. Maybe we consider him the author of Psalms because we identify with his personal challenges and triumphs. In fact, some psalms attributed to David were written while he was in the pit of difficulty, following a victory over adversity, or a combination of both.

How could the shepherd king declare the Lord’s praise would continually be in his mouth when facing a giant, fleeing for his life from an angry king, or stuck with a bunch of disgruntled soldiers in a pit?

Although he had little, if any, experience on the battlefield, David had spent quite a bit of time in the arena of prayer, praise, and worship. He had developed some powerful faith-filled strategies while tending his father’s sheep. He might not have known much about Goliath, but he was well-acquainted with the living LORD God of heaven and earth.

Interestingly, of all the different “types” of psalms, the most numerous are laments—65 or 67, depending on who is doing the counting. Many lament psalms begin in desolation but end in delight. While optimism can be found in the end, pessimism and despair are aired forcefully and unashamedly. That’s good news because we need to recognize God is not threatened, intimidated, or angered by us voicing our complaints and expressing our grief. Yet, we face our greatest difficulties when we allow the giants of adversity and despair to dominate our lives in such a way that they rob us of our thanksgiving, so all we do is lament!

True victory comes when we move from despair to delight, from grumbling to glory, and from lament to thanksgiving!

One quick reminder, David knocked the giant, attempting to steal Israel’s praise, face down to the ground by slinging a stone into his forehead. The frontal lobe of the brain is essentially the “control panel” of our personality and ability to communicate. David’s stone hit the very source of defiance against God and His people. It was mighty difficult for Goliath to shout lies with a mouth full of sandy dirt!

Try throwing a few “thanksgiving” stones at your giants of despair and fear by glorifying and praising God for His goodness, mercy, and grace in your life!

YOU HAVE A LETTER FROM GOD!

I am not sure we fully appreciate the value of communication in these days. We live very near the old American Pony Express route. For a year and a half in the mid nineteenth century, until the telegraph service finally crossed the continent, riders carried the mail on fast horses from station to station from Colorado and points east to California. That was an expensive and often dangerous undertaking all for the sake of mail service.

We live a little over ten miles from the little town where snowshoe Thompson lived. In the same era as the Pony Express Thompson carried mail on 10 foot skis across the high Sierras from Mormon station to Placerville California.

Of course, most of us in America receive far more mail than we would like. Much of it is what we call junk mail. But letters from important people or people we love are still precious. I love the story of Kathy Keller, Tim Keller's wife, receiving several letters from C.S. Lewis when she wrote him as a 12 year old girl. They were actually written within weeks of Lewis’ death.

But no letter would be as valuable to any of us as direct communication from God. That is what we have in the 29th chapter of Jeremiah. Jeremiah sends a letter to the exiles who had been carried off to Babylon. And in that letter he gives them and us direct communication from God himself. This is not unlike the letters from Jesus to the seven churches in Asia Minor at the beginning of The Revelation.

Many of us are familiar with Jeremiah 29:11.

“I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

I recently heard someone say that our putting this verse on t-shirts and greeting cards, and applying it directly to our lives is a misuse of scripture. The person said you could only apply this to your life if you were in fact one of the Israelites exiled to Babylon in the 6th century before Christ. I believe that is a mistake. We have this letter in Scripture because God speaks to us from it. And this letter reveals important things about the character of God, and how he deals in our lives today.

GOD'S PLANS

First God declares in this passage that He has plans for you. I need to be honest here. I am not very good at making plans. I am always cynical about my ability to know what will happen in the future. But I understand that meaning in life comes from purpose. And God gives us assurance here that He has a plan. God assures the Israelites in exile that they are not simply in the hands of blind fate. And even though it may look to us like God does not know what He is doing, He knows. This brings to my mind His promise in Romans 8:28.

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

This verse does not say everything will be good in our lives. That was certainly not true for the children of Israel under judgment. But God was assuring the people that He was going to work even this evil, even this hardship, for good in their lives.

The Children of Israel were deported to Babylon because they had rejected God. But God still had plans for them. Someone recently asked me if I believed in the perfect and permissive will of God. He told me he had not done something that he was convinced was the will of God. And he felt he could no longer have God's best for his life.

I said I didn't think that was a good or biblical way of looking at the will of God. I would rather say the will of God is dynamic. He has a specific will for you no matter what happened in your past. A good example of this is found in 1John 1:9.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

So, suppose I sin. That is completely out of the will of God, is it not? Now, what is God's will for me? God's specific will for me is to confess that sin to Him. You have already strayed in significant ways from the will of God. But He still has a specific will for your life. His will may not be easy. But it is perfect for you.

GOD'S KNOWLEDGE

It was very difficult for the people of Israel to see any good in their captivity in Babylon. And it is sometimes impossible for us to see good in our immediate situation in life. But God is saying to them and to us, “I know.” You and I cannot know what the future holds. But God knows; and we can trust Him.

GOD'S GOODNESS

In Jeremiah 29:11 the NIV says God has plans to “prosper” us. The ESV says plans for our “welfare.” The Hebrew word here is Shalom. The foundation of the word shalom is peace. But it is used in the Old Testament for a much broader concept than simply the absence of war. It refers back to the time of prosperity particularly under the reign of David and Solomon. Of course God's peace begins with a right relationship with God. God is saying His plans for you begin with your getting right with Him. And Shalom has to refer more to spiritual welfare then it does material prosperity.

And God says His plans are not to harm you. Now here the Hebrew word for harm is the word for evil. It is the same word that is used in the garden of Eden for the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God's purpose in His judgment of the children of Israel was not their final destruction, but repentance.

GOD'S LOVE

The blessing of God is primarily relational. God's nature and his purpose for us is wound up in His infinite love. God desires a relationship with you. The very next verses in Jeremiah 29 read,

“Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.”

GOD'S HOPE

In this letter God and Jeremiah tell the people to settle down where they are and live in Hope. There is a theology that is often being applied in our day which simply says wouldn't it be wonderful if the Lord would come back today and this world would burn. But God is saying, “Don't give up. Keep on serving Me. You have hope.” This reminds me of 1 Corinthians 15:58 which God has often used to encourage my soul.

“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.”

GOD'S FUTURE

I am in an unusual place in life. I have terminal cancer. And I need to say, nothing in my life has helped me get a grip on the future as much as my cancer. I am able to see significance in every moment of my life.

I see relationships in a new light as my time on this Earth is shortened. That is not to say that I am always kind or patient with people. I am certainly tempted not to be kind. But I hunger to love them with Christ's love. And I pray for God to do things in their lives that I could never accomplish.

Prayer itself has become much more important to me. My cancer brings me to Exodus 33 where Moses cried out to see the glory of God. And I am convinced that God will use my prayers to touch the lives of those around me.

And I still need to minister. I need to pour myself into God's purpose. I am thankful that He allows, has even called me to write. And I think it is important to see that whatever ministry God calls you to will make life more meaningful.

All of these things relate to the future. Those of us who believe in Jesus have eternal life. And life beyond this life will be a continuation, even an expansion of the purpose and fellowship that He lavishes on us on Earth. That hope makes everything more meaningful now and forever.

Morning by Morning, November 15 - Liberation from Leviathan, the Twisting Serpent

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Be at the center of my heart and every moment of my day.  ...

"On that day the Lord with His cruel and great and strong sword will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan the twisting serpent, and He will kill the dragon that is in the sea" (Isaiah 27:1).

The "twisting serpent" -- who tries to twist my words so that others don't hear what I've truly said and how I said it, who tries to twist the understanding of motives and intentions of my heart to mean something else in the mind of the hearer, who tries to divide and conquer, who tries to deceive and confuse, who tries to harden hearts in opposition to Godly unity to keep us from speaking the truth in love or hearing the truth spoken in love, who locks it's teeth around our most vulnerable members and drags us down under the water where there is no breath of Your Spirit to guide our hearts and give us help -- is a wicked serpent. It's a wicked spirit of darkness "looking for someone to devour" (1 Peter 5:8).

"Who could pry open its jaws? For its teeth are terrible! The scales on its back are like rows of shields tightly sealed together... They interlock and cannot be penetrated.... Its eyes are like the red of dawn. Lightning leaps from its mouth; flames of fire flash out.... Its breath would kindle coals, for flames shoot from its mouth. The tremendous strength of Leviathan's neck strikes terror wherever it goes. Its flesh is hard and firm and cannot be penetrated. Its heart is hard as rock, hard as a millstone. When it rises, the mighty are afraid, gripped by its terror.... Leviathan make the water boil with its commotion... Nothing on earth is its equal, no other creature so fearless. Of all the creatures, it is the proudest. It is the king of the beasts" (Job 41:14-34).

This evil entity of darkness is wildly at work in our world -- within our nation, within our relationships, even within our own hearts, seeking to steal our faith, our hope, and our love to make us broken and divided, "double-minded and unstable in every way" so that we can no longer "receive anything from the Lord" (James 1:8). It's full of pride and instills the pride of hardened hearts that can no longer hear truth. It convincing its victims with a certainty they are right in their twisted beliefs and justified in their opposition to all who would deny or fail to embrace their version of truth -- twisted and distorted, though it is. It stirs up strife with its fury and wrath to intimidate and accuse, to judge and condemn, and to crush the life out of its prey.

So give us eyes to see, ears to hear, wisdom to understand, and humility to allow You to search out our hearts and our minds to reveal its grip upon us -- upon our nation, our relationships, and our own hearts. And let the "cruel and strong and great sword" of Your Word and Your Truth cut off its head, break its teeth, and silence its voice (Psalm 3:7 and 74:14). Wield Your mighty "Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God" as You empower us to "pray in the Spirit at all times" to "keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints" (Ephesians 6:17-18).

This is a spiritual battle -- to be fought with the spiritual "weapons of our warfare" -- weapons of humility, faith, discipline, obedience, and hope; weapons of the Word of God, the Name of Jesus, the Power of the Blood of the Lamb, and the word of our testimony (2 Corinthians 10:3; Revelation 12:11). "For our struggle is not against enemies of flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly place. Therefore (we must) take up the whole armor of God, so that (we) may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm" (Ephesians 6:12-13).

Come, Holy Spirit. Give us eyes to see the nature of the battle around us and even within us. Come pierce this writhing dragon, this twisting serpent who seeks to "kill and steal and destroy" (John 10:10). Even in the midst of the battle, let us "Praise the Lord! ... For the Lord takes pleasure in His people; He adorns the humble with victory! ... Let the faithful exult in glory; let them sing for joy.... Let the high praises of God be in their hearts and two-edged swords in their hands ... to execute (Your) judgment decreed. This is glory for all His faithful one. Praise the Lord!" (Psalm 149:1-9)

Come have Your way in us and in our world. Displace the darkness with Your Light. You're the God to proclaims Your Good News of into our hearts and our world, who comes in Your power and love and truth to "bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God!" (Isaiah 61:1-2)

We are witnesses of Your glory and warriors in Your Kingdom, with our faith and hope and love in You. "Blessed be the Lord, my Rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle; my Rock and my Fortress, my Stronghold and my Deliverer, my Shield, in whom in take refuge, who subdues the (spiritual enemies of my soul) under me.... Bow Your heavens, O Lord, and come down; touch the mountains so that they smoke. Make the lightning flash and scatter them; send out Your arrows and rout them; Stretch out Your hand from on high; set me free and rescue me from the mighty waters, from the hand of (my spiritual enemies), whose mouths speak like, and whose right hands are false.... (Blessed) are the people to whom such blessings fall; (blessed) are the people whose God is the Lord!" (Palm 144:1-15)  In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, I pray you take up the whole armor of God and stand firm to withstand the twisting serpent in every form it manifests itself in your land and your life, to see the victory of the Lord who has defeats our foe with the piercing of His Word the power of His Spirit, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Morning by Morning, November 14 - Life Lessons along "The Long Way"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Speak to my spirit, O Lord, My God -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Let me hear what You're saying and see what You're doing, as I entrust my day into Your hands and Your will. ...

"Remember the long way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, in order to humble you, testing you to know what is in your heart, whether or not you would keep His commandments. He humbled you by letting you hunger, then by feeding you with manna, with which neither you nor your ancestors were acquainted, in order to make you understand that one does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. The clothes on your back did not wear out and your feet did not swell these forty years. Know then in your heart that as a parent disciplines a child so the Lord your God disciplines you. Therefore keep the commandments of the Lord your God, by walking in His ways and by fearing Him. For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land with flowing streams, ... a land where you may eat bread without scarcity, where you will lack nothing.... You shall eat your fill and bless the Lord your God for the good land that He has give you" (Deuteronomy 8:2-10).

Lord Jesus, when You confronted Satan with the Word of God in Your forty days of wilderness, You quoted the Word of God from Israel's forty years in the wilderness, declaring, "It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:3 quoting Deuteronomy 8:3). Those words of God, from God's mouth into their spirits as they journeyed through their wilderness spoke of humility, faith, discipline, obedience, and hope. They spoke of learning life lessons along "the long way" through the "wilderness." They spoke of trusting in a God who is always with us, who never leaves us nor forsakes us, and who is always leading us into the fullness of His promises and our inheritance in the "good land" of His grace and mercy and love.

Those words empowered You to confront Your enemy, when he came to attack Your identity and destroy Your destiny as "the thief (who) comes only to steal and kill and destroy" (John 10:10). And those words empower us to overcome him as well (Revelation 12:11). Those words, and all they speak of and all they invite us to live in to, empower us with the humility, faith, discipline, obedience, and hope we need to overcome and even grow up into maturity in the face of every attack along "the long way" of our wilderness through this broken and fallen world. They are "weapons of our warfare" (2 Corinthians 10:4). They are "keys of the kingdom" (Matthew 16:19). They are words of "spirit and life" (John 6:63). And they are words that go forth from Your mouth and into our spirits that "shall not return to (You) empty, but shall accomplish that which (You) purpose, and succeed in the thing for which (You) sent it" (Isaiah 55:11).

My years on this earth, passing through the wilderness of this world, sometimes seem like "the long way" home, "the long way" into the fullness of my inheritance in You. But I pray that by the power of Your grace at work within me, I'll learn every life lesson You desire for me learn and grow up into the maturity of my identity in You and live out the fullness of my destiny in You (Ephesians 4:13; Philippians 2:12).

And all along "the long way" of this wilderness, let Your words and Your Spirit fill my heart with this hope and this promise: "This slight momentary affliction is preparing (me) for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, because (I) look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary but what cannot be seen is eternal.... He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee" (2 Corinthians 4:17-5:5). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, I pray you live by every word that comes from the mouth of God into your spirit, as you live into the fullness of your identity and destiny in Christ, all along "the long way" through the wilderness of this world, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Morning by Morning, November 12 - How to "Draw Near to God"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I welcome You and worship You, here in my heart and throughout the moments of my day -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God.  ...

"Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you" (James 4:6).

Lord, how do I "draw near" to You?  ...

It seems I hear You saying in my heart, "Surrender and seek. In an attitude of your heart, surrender your heart to Mine, your will to Mine. Allow Me to form My thoughts in your mind and My desires in your heart. To surrender to Me is to rest in Me. As You do, My Spirit stirs in your spirit to seek Me, to passionately pursue Me, to put Me first above all else. In this trusting surrender and seeking pursuit, you draw near to Me, as You give Me room to move in you to desire and to do this very thing I created you to be -- My beloved one."  ...

Yes, Lord. May I be Your beloved one (Song of Solomon 5:1; Ephesians 5:1; Colossians 3:12; 1 Thessalonians 1:4; Jude 1:1). May I be one who surrenders and seeks, one who draws near and doesn't hold back, one who presses in through passionate pursuit to be as close to You as I can be. Uproot and remove everything in me and everything between us that would ever separate us (James 4:6b; Romans 8:38-39). And replace that all with the intimacy with You that You've created me to know.

May I seek You first and fully abide in You (Matthew 6:33; John 15:4). May I draw near to You and become one with You. "Anyone united to the Lord become one spirit with Him.... (My) body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within (me), which (I) have from God" (1 Corinthians 6:17-19). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

My friend, I pray you draw near to God and become one with Him as His beloved one, just as He created you to be, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!
