Pray Christmas - Day 13

9651038099?profile=original

December 13

  • Background to today’s prayer

    • Can you imagine being Joseph, your bride to be is pregnant…and you have an accurate memory so you know the baby is not yours

    • And then God tells you to do something TOTALLY contrary to what your entire heart cries out to do

    • Do you want to have that kind of obedience?

TODAY’S PRAYER

Lord that Joseph was the obedient young man that he was, listening and obeying Your servant (Matthew 1:18b-20) is so amazing to me! Lord I desire to trust You, like he did. Lord bring me into situations this Christmas season that are SO big that there would be no way for me to see them accomplished without You completely carrying the day, causing me to trust You. Thank You Lord Jesus.

Morning by Morning, December 12 - "Lord of All"

Morning by Morning, December 12 - "Lord of All"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I lift up Your name and speak out Your authority over every area of my life and every moment of my day.  ...

"Jesus Christ -- He is Lord of all" (Acts 10:36).

Lordship is relational. You're Lord and I'm not. You're in charge and I'm not. You're in control and I'm not. Any area of my life where I'm still in charge or in control, I'm still being lord of that area instead of yielding to Your Lordship of that area.

Insisting on my lordship instead of yielding to Your Lordship is just another form of pride -- where I'm going to do what I want to do in the power of my strength and in accordance with my will. It's like in the days of the judges where "there was no king in Israel; all the people did what was right in their own eyes" (Judges 21:25). That's the opposite of humility. That's an attitude of rebellion, resisting Your will and authority in our lives, rooted in pride, and refusing to acknowledge You as our King, Your Word as our Law, Your Character as our Example, Your Truth as our Standard, and Your Spirit as our Guide.

Your Word says "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.... Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you" (James 4:6-10). So our pride resists You in the very places where we need Your grace the most. And when things don't go well, when that's not working out so well for us, it feels like You're opposing us but we're really just opposing You and living out the consequence of our rebellion and resistance against You.

In the folly and foolishness of our pride that insists on our will and our way, asserting our own lordship, we're basically saying, "No thanks, God. I've got this." Which is just another way of saying, "I don't need You. I can handle things just fine on my own. So just take Your grace and go give it to somebody who really needs it -- somebody who's weak enough to need You and 'humble' enough to admit it."

Wow, forgive me, Lord. Uproot that attitude from my heart and my mind, and all the subtle ways it sneaks in under the guide of self-confidence or healthy independence, when it's really just plain ol' pride. It's a modern version of that ancient declaration, "I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit on the mount of assembly on the heights of Zaphon; I will ascend to the tops of the clouds, I will make myself like the Most High" (Isaiah 14:13-14). It's like saying, "I am Lord of all."

Wow, that's ugly. But when You show it to me like that, I want no part of it. "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall" (Proverbs 16:18). And I sure don't need more chances to fall, but the power of Your grace to lift me up. And the way up is down -- down on my knees, surrendered in my heart, yielded to Your Lordship in every area of my life -- not doing what's right in my own eyes, but doing what's right in Yours.

So as best as I can and all by Your grace, I believe in my heart and confess with my mouth "that Jesus is Lord" (Romans 10:6). I want to come to place where I can proclaim in both faith and in truth that "Jesus Christ -- He is Lord of all" -- Lord of all that I am and all that I have, Lord all I ever will have and ever will be, Lord of my spirit and soul and body, Lord of identity and destiny, Lord of my family and all my relationships, Lord my work and ministry, Lord of my gifts and calling, Lord of my finances and hopes, Lord of my past and present and future, Lord of my eternity, Lord of all. Lord, let it be so. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, I pray you are lifted up in the arms of the Lord, full of His grace and love, and living into the fullness of His favor, as you humble yourself in His sight to yield to His Lordship in every area of your life as Lord of all, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Pray Christmas - Day 12

9651039075?profile=original

December 12

  • Background to today’s prayer

    • If you spend any time in Christian circles at all, you invariably hear someone put down another’s belief, simply because it’s different from yours.

    • Zechariah, John the Baptist’s dad made a huge faux paux relative to what he expected Christ to be.

    • He expected Christ to be a political Messiah.

    • My concern today is how we treat people that believe differently than we do.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Lord, as I read the account of Zechariah’s prophecy (Luke 1:6-79) even though he was filled with the Holy Spirit, he seems to have gotten it wrong!!! It looks like Zechariah expected Jesus to be a political leader (Luke 1:71) Lord, I realize that I don’t always have an accurate bead on Your truths, but Lord give me the grace to allow others with differing opinions to have them without me looking down my nose at them. Lord, Father, give me the wisdom and spiritual understanding to be gracious to those around me. Thank You Lord.

PTAP: Bahrain & Qatar

Bahrain National Day - December 16
1. Praise God for a handful of new contacts in recent months, local believers and those who are interested in reading the Bible. Also, praise God for increased and extended prayer for Bahrain which has brought about new interest in knowing more about Jesus.
2. There is a causeway between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia where Saudis can drive to Bahrain which they do on weekends. Pray that many Saudis will hear the gospel in Bahrain where there is more freedom to do so.
3. Pray for the Sunni population and the Persian-Bahraini communities which have great spiritual needs at the moment. The majority of Bahrainis are Shia.
4. Pray that God would raise up many laborers for the harvest from various places such as expat churches that have many believers who could reach out to the Bahraini people. Pray for unity of vision and passion among all believers to reach the Bahraini people. Also, pray that there would be more seasons of extended prayer and worship!

Qatari National Day - December 18

1.  Qatar is truly a dry and barren land, both physically and spiritually.  Pray for streams in the desert, that the Qatari people would eat and drink from Jesus, the living water and bread of life.  In addition, pray for the believers in Qatar.  It can be a very discouraging place to be spiritually.  Pray for the Holy Spirit to bring revival and renewal.

2.  Pray 1 Timothy 2:1-4.  Pray for the leaders of Qatar, especially the ruler - Sheikh Tamim bin Hamed al Thani, so that many will be saved through the knowledge of the truth of the gospel of grace found only in Jesus Christ.  Pray that the local and expat believers would be able to live tranquil and quiet lives in all godliness and dignity for this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior.  Pray that whole Qatari families will know the one God, the one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus who gave himself as a ransom for all.

3.  In 2022, the spotlight will be on Qatar as they host the World Cup.  Pray that even now, doors of opportunity would open for the gospel in a land that has been closed on many fronts for years.

Morning by Morning, December 11 - Hope, Patience, and Prayer

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I welcome You here in my heart and every moment of my day.  ...

"Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer" (Romans 12:12).

You Word invites me to "rejoice in hope." My joy is grounded in hope. And my hope is grounded in the unwavering truth of Your Word and the unfailing work of Your Spirit, confirming my faith and trust in You. Knowing what You've done gives me hope to look and see what You will do. "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1).

Your Word invites me to "be patient in suffering." You may not directly will everything I suffer, for You never will what is evil or what is sinful. But we all suffer the consequences of the evil and sinful choices made throughout the generations that set up the circumstances of our afflictions and sufferings on our journey through this broken and fallen world as You carry on Your plan of redemption of all things (Acts 3:19-21). And You don't waste a moment of our sufferings. You use them all, no matter the source, to make us more like You, to teach us to learn to love, to help us understand who we are and who You are in us. That's how You cause "all things (to) work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to His purpose" (Romans 8:28).

And Your Word invites me to "persevere in prayer." In that sense, prayer is a choice. Prayer is an act of my will, empowered by Your Spirit, to persist, to press in, to press through, to "p-u-s-h" -- "pray-until-something-happens." Too many times, we give up too soon. We lose heart, we lose hope, we lose patience, and we don't "persevere in prayer" to press through our challenges and prevail over our circumstances and pass our test to be promoted in the Spirit. "In this (we) rejoice, even if now for a little while (we) have had to suffer various trials, so that the genuineness of (our) faith -- being more precious than gold that, though perishable, is tested by fire -- may be found to result in praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed" (1 Peter 1:6-7).

Joy, suffering, perseverance, along with faith, hope, and prayer -- I wish it all wasn't so intertwined. But then, my thoughts are not yet like Your thoughts and my ways are not yet like Your ways -- Yours are higher and Yours are better (Isaiah 55:8-9). So my part is to keep learning to trust You, as You keep showing Yourself faithful -- to keep rejoicing in hope, being patient in suffering, and persevering in prayer -- as best as I can and all by Your grace. That's all part of how You are making me more like You each day (Romans 8:29; 1 John 4:7). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

Pray Christmas - Day 11

9651038255?profile=original

December 11

  • Background to today’s prayer

    • This is the season for giving…or is it?

    • What are you giving…and to whom?

    • Let me ask it this way, what are you giving…and is it to someone who has a tangible need…that you can meet?

    • Folks, as you buy additional gifts for your friends or family I trust that you will be burdened for those that you can minister to in a tangible way.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Elizabeth’s proclamation to Mary shows the wisdom of an older woman, and yet Lord it also shows the simplicity and childlike faith that is so needed today. Lord, Elizabeth talked about mercy in verses 50 and 54…but tucked away in between (Luke 1:53) is a verse that I pray for the hungry in my town this year, that You would fill them “with good things.” Lord I know that “good things” does not necessarily mean abundance of material things, but it sometimes can. And Lord, I know it does mean peace, hope, love, faithfulness, joy, etc. all of these things that are Your attributes. Thank You Lord that 2000 years ago Elizabeth could pray this for her day, and I can do the same for my day. And whenever it is within my ability, burden me to show Your love, tangibly, to someone in need.

WHEN WERE YOU SAVED?

There are those who are convinced that our salvation was predetermined before the foundation of the universe. Incidentally, I believe that. There are scriptures that make it clear. (Eph.1:4 among them) However, to fully understand that, we need to think some things through.

In Matthew 11:20-24 Jesus denounced the cities who did not repent.

“Then He proceeded to denounce the towns where most of His miracles were done, because they did not repent: ‘Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented in sackcloth and ashes long ago! But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will go down to Hades. For if the miracles that were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until today. But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.’”

It is important to note that Jesus did not say, “When you saw those miracles you could not repent because you were not chosen.” This passage seems to indicate that they would be condemned in the judgment “because they did not repent.”

I recently saw the question on the Facebook, “What is Calvinism.” The answer given was Romans 8: 29,30.

“For those He foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brothers. And those He predestined, He also called; and those He called, He also justified; and those He justified he also glorified.”

l want to emphasize the word, “foreknew,” in these verses. A strong Calvinist might point out that the word “foreknew,” here refers to a previous relationship, rather than knowing your hair color or your name. However, while this certainly refers to more than the omniscience of God, it cannot mean less. God has always known every decision you will ever make, every thought you have ever thought or ever will think. And He has known everything about your character and destiny from before the foundation of the world. In Matthew 12:37 Jesus told us we would be acquitted or condemned by our words. He has known every word we have spoken or will speak.

Now, let me connect the parable Jesus told of the sower and the seed in Matthew 13. Let's read the first part of the passage First beginning with verse 3.

“Then He told them many things in parables, saying: “Consider the sower who went out to sow. As he was sowing, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Others fell on rocky ground, where there wasn’t much soil, and they sprang up quickly since the soil wasn’t deep. But when the sun came up they were scorched, and since they had no root, they withered. Others fell among thorns, and the thorns came up and choked them. Still others fell on good ground and produced a crop: some 100, some 60, and some 30 times what was sown. Anyone who has ears should listen!”

Before Jesus explains this parable, He tells His disciples why He speaks to the people in parables. And I think it is important for us to look at this explanation before we go on to the explanation of the parable.

“Then the disciples came up and asked Him, 'Why do You speak to them in parables?'
He answered them, 'Because the secrets of the kingdom of heaven have been given for you to know, but it has not been given to them. For whoever has, more will be given to him, and he will have more than enough. But whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. For this reason I speak to them in parables, because looking they do not see, and hearing they do not listen or understand. Isaiah’s prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says:
You will listen and listen,
yet never understand;
and you will look and look,
yet never perceive.
For this people’s heart has grown callous;
their ears are hard of hearing,
and they have shut their eyes;
otherwise they might see with their eyes
and hear with their ears,
understand with their hearts
and turn back—and I would cure them.

“But your eyes are blessed because they do see, and your ears because they do hear! For I assure you: Many prophets and righteous people longed to see the things you see yet didn’t see them; to hear the things you hear yet didn’t hear them."

There are two things that I think are important to see about why Jesus spoke in parables, and why some people receive the word of God and others do not. First, hearing and understanding the word about the kingdom of heaven is a gift. Verse 16 clearly says, “Your eyes are blessed because they do see, and your ears because they do hear.”

But there is some personal responsibility in this truth. In verse 13 Jesus says He spoke to them in parables so they would not understand. But the reason he gives for their not understanding, from the prophecy of Isaiah, is that they won't understand what they have been told. And He seems to be saying, “If I made this clear enough, even these people who reject Me would come to understand and I would cure them.”

Recently, someone approached me on Facebook, asking if it was fair to say my position was that some people will receive Christ because they are righteous. I answered, “No, my position is that the matter is complex.”

There are two points upon which I strongly disagree with this notion. The first is the concept of righteousness here. To say that some of us are righteous because we admit we are not righteous and need a Savior, is strange indeed. The only possible way you could say that, was if righteousness were comparative. Is someone righteous because someone else is worse? The only One we can compare our righteousness to is Jesus. None of us come close to His holy standard.

My second concern, is that this answer is more simplistic than what Jesus gives us. I do not know how many kinds of barriers may stand between a person and the grace of God. I do not know that we have anything to do with some of them. For instance, I was born in a place, and into a family where I would hear the gospel all my life. To be honest, I really didn't understand it in my younger years. And I certainly cannot explain why God put up with my hard-headedness as long as He did. But God put me in the place of hearing His word. I did not choose where I would be born. If you are concerned about the fairness of salvation, how was my privilege fair? I too believe God is absolutely just. And that will be demonstrated in the end. (Eph.3:10) But for now it is complex. What other barriers might there be to someone's being chosen by God? This is far more information than God has given us.

So we finally come to the parable itself. Let me point out a few crucial things that explain why some of us come to Christ, and some of us do not.

“You, then, listen to the parable of the sower: Whenever anyone hears the word about the kingdom and doesn’t understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the one sown along the path. And the one sown on rocky ground—this is one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy.
Yet he has no root in himself, but is short-lived. When pressure or persecution comes because of the word, immediately he stumbles. Now the one sown among the thorns—this is one who hears the word, but the worries of this age and the seduction of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. But the one sown on the good ground—this is one who hears and understands the word, who does bear fruit and yields: some 100, some 60, some, 30 times what was sown.”

Matthew 13:18-23

I will briefly enumerate what I have to say about these verses.

  1. First, this is a matter of spiritual warfare. The devil snatches the gospel away from those who hear but do not understand. And while I do not know all that is involved in his taking hearts captive to do his will, I know that it is the right thing to pray.
  2. The second matter is understanding. Even as a believer, I must cry out to God for spiritual understanding. And then I must explain truth, faith, the gospel, and other things that release spiritual power in the lives of people.
  3. The third is a matter of a divided heart. When my heart is filled with the cares of this world and the seduction of wealth, the whole purpose of my conversion maybe lost. What is the purpose of the Kingdom of Heaven? I do believe you can get insight on who is really saved from this parable. But Jesus does not present that as the point. The kingdom of heaven was not come to mankind so we can abandoned Earth to the judgment of God. The kingdom was brought to Earth so that our transformed lives might bear fruit, establishing a stronghold of the kingdom of heaven in this world.

Now, I have written this so people will think these matters through. I think that is important whether you agree with me or not. I am aware this has become a painful issue. And there seem to be 3 faulty positions on this issue. At this point I do not wish to give arguments for why I think these positions are faulty. I would simply like you to think about them.

Some of you will label me as a hide-bound Calvinist, and write me off as a heretic. More of you may think this theology is too complex to understand or worry about. And some of you will call me an Armenian. You at least need to know that is not necessarily accurate. Armenian beliefs are fairly specific. And it often seems to me that people are excluded from the fold by what I would label, extra-calvinisticum. George Whitefield and John Wesley disagreed over these issues. But at the funeral of Wesley, Whitfield recognized the Holiness of his brother in Christ.

I love the poem by Edwin Markham that Charles Swindoll has slightly rearranged in his sermons.

“Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout
He drew a circle that left me out.
But love and I had the wit to win:
We drew a circle and left him In!”

Morning by Morning, December 10 - "Meditate on Your Word" to Lead from Your Truth

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Be at the center of who I am and all I do this day.  ...

"I cry out with my whole heart; hear me, O Lord.... I rise before the dawning of the morning, and cry for help; I hope in Your Word. My eyes are awake through the night watches, that I may mediate on Your Word.... You are near, O Lord, and all Your commandments are Truth" (Psalm 119:145-151 NKJV).

I hope in Your Word; I meditate on Your Word. I welcome Your Word to become a part of who I am -- informing my thoughts, clarifying my choices, and guiding my steps.

Let Your Word be my Plumb Line. Straighten out what's crooked and align what's out of place. Make me sensitive to Your conviction and discerning of Your correction. Let me not be deceived or confused, but clear and direct in what is right according to You and Your Word and Your ways.

Then "the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart" will "be acceptable in Your sight" because they are grounded in Your Word as my Standard and my Definition of Truth, "O Lord, my Strength and my Redeemer" (Psalm 19:14 NKJV). When I mediate on Your Word, I can live and love and lead from Your Truth. Lord, let it be so -- in my heart and in the heart of all who would seek to share Your Word and shepherd Your people, in the power and love of Your grace. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, I pray you are filled with a fresh hunger to meditate on God's Word that you may live and love and lead from His truth in every place He has strategically positioned you, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Pray Christmas - Day 10

9651037101?profile=original

December 10

  • Background to today’s prayer

    • Trust…a scary word when you are dealing with an unknown.

    • And yet two biblical characters, in two very difficult situations handled truth very differently from one another.

    • Let me jump to the opposite end of this spectrum, knowing that nothing is impossible with God.

    • My prayer for us today is that we would be open to the Lord working these truths into our life.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Zechariah looked to man’s wisdom and doubted while Mary looked to Your sovereignty and trusted. What do I do? Lord, Psalm 103:19 tells me that You are sovereign over all…yet I so often act like Zechariah wanting to decide if Your ways fit into my box (Luke 1:18) whereas Mary trusted in Your words that came through the angel (Luke 1:38). Father, we often quote verse 37, “Nothing is impossible with God.” Lord, would You convict our hearts to be broken for our selfish misunderstanding, causing us to glory in child-like faith instead.

Pray Christmas - Day 9

9651036876?profile=original

December 9

  • Background to today’s prayer

    • Imagine the joy and just, fun that old Zechariah and Elizabeth must have had when they realized they were pregnant.

    • Can you imagine how cute this old couple must have been together.

    • I want you that are praying with me, to have the same kind of “giddy” time with the Lord, and that is my prayer for you.

    • For you who pray alongside me, each and every morning.

TODAY’S PRAYER

After Elizabeth  became pregnant she remained in seclusion for five months (Luke 1:24). Lord I can just see her and Zechariah, wanting to enjoy every happy moment they could in this very unique miracle of life for them. Lord we trust You to grant joy and peace to Your children that are praying through these 25 Days of Prayer, simply because they are believers (Romans 15:13). Not because we deserve it Lord but simply because of Your mercy and Your grace. Thank You Lord.

Pray Christmas - Day 8

9651036860?profile=original

December 8

  • Background to today’s prayer

    • Think about Gabriel standing before you, and if you’re like Zechariah, you doubted.

    • I can’t imagine Gabriel then saying, basically, “You doubt me? I stand before God Almighty…”

    • I’d believe anything he said…Or would I?

    • Don’t you and I do the same thing when we talk to God about something He has already CLEARLY talked about in scripture?

    • Let’s see…

TODAY’S PRAYER

Lord, as I think of the words of the angel to Zechariah (Luke 1:11-17) I cannot throw stones at him for doubting (vs 18) because I too doubt. I doubt Your clear word as stated in scripture. Lord forgive me for this. Let me take responsibility for the times when I want to blame someone else, even though Your word is clear that my struggle isn’t against flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:12a). Or the times Lord when I want to hold onto my anxiety, even though Your word clearly says that I can have peace instead (Philippians 4:6-7). Father, thank You for all these and so many more promises that have been made real to us because of Your Son’s coming.

In Luke chapter 11 Jesus told us what happens  when a demonic spirit is driven out, possibly by a crisis and human effort, maybe even a well meant intervention of friends, but the demon is not replaced by the power of God through the indwelling Holy Spirit. The end of that person will be worse than it was to start with.

I wonder if Jesus told this on a number of occasions throughout his ministry. Because in Matthew chapter 12, probably on a different occasion, Jesus used this story as a parable to demonstrate something on a grander scale. Look at these verses and especially at the application from the context that is given in Matthew 12:45, the final verse of the passage.

“When an unclean spirit comes out of a man, it roams through waterless places looking for rest but doesn’t find any. Then it says, ‘I’ll go back to my house that I came from.’ And returning, it finds the house vacant, swept, and put in order. Then off it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and settle down there. As a result, that man’s last condition is worse than the first. That’s how it will also be with this evil generation.”

Matthew 12:43-45

Here Jesus is explaining not simply what happens to a person, but what happens to an entire generation that turns over a new leaf without the power of God. We too are living in a generation in which God's presence, purpose, and power are vacant from our culture.

I have written lately of my concern about the press in our generation toward not wanting to live if life were no longer comfortable or diverting.* I believe this is evidence that the purpose even of many who profess Christ in this generation is ease and pleasure.

I said I wanted to write as long as possible. And when I could no longer write, I could still pray for people whom God brings into my life. I believe this is God's purpose for me. This is good, and I hope it is the plan of God for me. But this misses a more important truth. The fuller purpose of my life is the glory of God.

I begin my morning devotional each day with John 12:27,28 where Jesus was troubled as He looked ahead to the agony and indignity of death on a cross and separation from His Heavenly Father.

"Now is my heart troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name!" Then a voice came from heaven: "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again."

John 12:27,28

In relation to these verses I have written out the simple prayer, “Father, I pray that Your Name may be glorified through my life.” The things that I mentioned may bring Him glory. But He can still be glorified if I am unconscious, without dignity, feeble minded, or in too much pain to write or even pray beyond crying out to God to release me! At least in the final stanza of His glory everyone will see how He wove even this together for His glory and my good in the entire tapestry of my life.

But I grieve for what is yet to come upon our generation where God's glory and purpose are vacant. The final state of our generation, will be much worse even that it is today.

Morning by Morning, December 7 - Filled Up to be Sent Out

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Make me more like You today.  ...

"Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers:  Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a member of the court of Herod the ruler, and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, 'Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.' Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off. So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went..." (Acts 13:1-4).

When we're worshiping and fasting, we're positioning our human spirits to hear Your Holy Spirit. When we're setting apart time for You and Your leading, we're available to be set apart for You and Your plans. When we draw near to You in prayer, we're inspired to be sent out by You in power.

For me, these morning times of prayer I set part for You are my way of worshiping You in spirit and truth, of fasting from everything else that would fill up this time of these first moments and first fruits of my day, of seeking Your face and listening for Your voice, of being available to filled up and sent out by Your Holy Spirit.

In so many ways, these morning times are my spiritual life-line that sets the stage and prepares the way for me to be confidently secure in who I am and boldly faithful in what You will do through me each day. Thank You for putting this spiritual hunger in me for Your Word, this spiritual thirst in me for Your Spirit that keeps drawing me near, drawing me here, morning by morning, to be filled up and sent out.

I'm sure that when they laid hands on Barnabas and Saul for them to be filled up and sent out by Your Holy Spirit, they had no idea of all that would come. I doubt that Saul, also known as Paul, knew this would be the first of many missionary journeys through many lands that would form the basis for much of the New Testament out of all the experiences and challenges that lay ahead him. But he went in faith, with Barnabas at his side, to begin "the work to which (You) had called them."

Here I am, Lord. Send me. Draw me near and fill me up. Put Your thoughts in my mind and Your desires in my heart. Prepare the way and order my steps. Assign me and align me with the right relationships for my journey through this season. Open the doors that no man can close and open the doors that no man can open, to fulfill Your plan and Your purpose for me this day and every day to come. By the power of Your grace, may I be confidently secure in who I am in You and boldly faithful to the calling and purpose You put in my heart to fulfill through my life. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

Pray Christmas - Day 7

9651039062?profile=original

December 7

  • Background to today’s prayer

    • Why did John the Baptist come to earth?

    • He came for one very specific purpose…to go on before the Lord, the Messiah.

    • Why are you here on earth?

    • What does God want you to do?

    • And then once you ask Him what He wants you to do, are you willing to?

    • You see, John the Baptist’s role, had an eventual outcome, and that was to turn the hearts of men and women and boys and girls.

    • How about you?

    • What do you, and to whom do you, plan to share the truths of this season to?

TODAY’S PRAYER

Father, the purpose of John the Baptist’s birth was to “go on before the Lord [Jesus] (Luke 1:17a). And with us celebrating the Your Son’s entrance into earth this Christmas season, my prayer is that we will have the opportunity to go before Him, sharing the truths of this season, and “turning the hearts of fathers…and the disobedient…” (Luke 1:17b) to You Lord.

Morning by Morning, December - The Secret Place

Morning by Morning, December - The Secret Place

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are One with my Father, One with Holy Spirit. Come be One within me, as I look to You and listen for Your leading in the communion of payer to begin my day, O Lord my God -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (John 17:21).  ...

"And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you" (Matthew 6:5).

Thank You for the gift of the "secret" place. It's the secret place of prayer, the secret place of deeply personal and intimate relationship with You with You where it's only us. It's "the secret place of Your Presence" (Psalm 31:20 NKJV).

You draw me close to take some time to come away with You -- behind closed doors to the world and even to the most wonderful things in my life, until it's just You and me alone in the secret place for a little while. It doesn't replace the truth that You're always with me, that You never leave, that You never forsake me, that You hem me in before and behind and all around. But at the same time, it's a  separate time, a sacred time, set apart for You and just the two of us -- my God and me.

Here in the secret place, You remind me that You're my Father and I'm Your child (Romans 8:16; 1 John 3:1). You remind me You're my Savior and I'm Your servant, Your disciple, and even Your friend (Luke 2:11; Matthew 10:24; John 15:15). You remind me You're my Comforter, my Counselor, my Advocate, and the One who leads me in truth and empowers me to be all You've created me and called me to be (John 14:16, 26; Acts 1:8). You remind me of all the gifts and graces I have in You as one of Your children "who dwells in the secret place of the Most High" and seeks to daily "abide under the shadow of the Almighty" (Psalm 91:1 NKJV).

Here in the secret place, I rest in You so I can then arise in newness of life, refreshed and renewed, encouraged and empowered, secure in my identity and fulfilling my destiny -- embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with the Holy Spirit. These are just a few of the priceless rewards for me when I come and meet You in the secret place I have in You and that You have in me. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

Pray Christmas - Day 6

9651036493?profile=original

December 6

  • Background to today’s prayer

    • Job was blameless, yet look at all that God allowed, in fact, PROMPTED sataN to put into his life

      • loss of possessions,

      • loss of family,

      • attacked by friends,

      • attacked by wife.

    • In the west we  do not think we should suffer.

    • We expect to be RELIEVED of suffering.

    • Is this the new disease of affluence?

  • Today’s prayer

Reading about how Zechariah and Elizabeth (John the Baptist’s dad and mom) were upright and blameless (Luke 1:6), I’m reminded of Job who was also blameless (Job 1:1,8;2:3) and look at the trials You allowed in his life. Lord, as we wander through this joyous time of giving, let us remember that blessings are not defined by those around us, but by our relationship with You. In the West we have difficulties come our way and we want, no, we expect, relief from them. Forgive us Father for thinking that following in Your Son’s footsteps, the footsteps of suffering (1 Peter 2:21) is NOT for us, even though Your Son’s advent into this world was for the, purpose of the cross (John 12:27) Forgive us Lord for our arrogance, and teach us to thank You FOR everything (Ephesians 5:20).

Morning by Morning, December 5 - Courage that Overcomes Cowardice

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I speak out Your name and listen for Your leading, as I wait on You -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit -- in surrender and silence, in the communion of prayer.  ...

"Next to him was Shammah son of Agee, the Hararite. The Philistines gathered together at Lehi, where there was a plot of ground full of lentils; and the army fled from the Philistines. But he took his stand in the middle of the plot, defended it, and killed the Philistines; and the Lord brought about a great victory" (2 Samuel 23:11-12).

Israel battled the Philistines, who came to plunder their land and steal their harvest, time and time again. All that happened to them under the Old Covenant is to serve as an example to us under the New Covenant, to teach us the spiritual lessons and spiritual principles to face our spiritual enemies, to embrace our spiritual promises, and receive our spiritual inheritance. "These things happened to them to serve as an example, and they were written down to instruct us, on whom the ends of the ages have come" (1 Corinthians 10:11).

Under the New Covenant in Christ, our battle is not against the physical Philistines but the spiritual Philistines, not defending our harvest field of lintels but our harvest field of the fullness of the kingdom of God. "For our struggle is not against enemies of flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the principalities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places" (Ephesians 6:12). And in our daily struggle to live by the grace of God into the fullness of the kingdom of God, we continue to face our spiritual enemy, "the thief (who) comes only to steal and kill and destroy" (John 10:10a). But at the same time, we look to the One who has overcome our enemy and empowers us by Your grace to overcome him as well in the power of Your name and the character of Your nature You're forming in us. "(You) came that (we) may have life, and have it abundantly" (John 10:10b).

We have much to learn from the example of Shammah, one of David's "mighty men" (2 Samuel 23:8). He refused to run. He refused to compromise or appease. When others fled away, "he took his stand" (2 Samuel 23:12). His courage inspired courage in his companions; his stand encouraged others to stand. "And the Lord brought about a great victory!" (2 Samuel 12:12).

Give me more courage, Lord. Deliver me from the "snare" of people-pleasing, rooted in "the fear of man," insecurity, false humility, self-centered pride and self-preservation, that would keep me from standing firm in the faith, defending the truth, and honoring Your name, no matter the cost (Proverbs 29:25). Give me a holy disgust for cowardice that masquerades as tolerance and appeasement that disguises itself as cultural correctness and social sensibility. By the power of Your grace, may I be done with that. "But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the polluted ... their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death" (Revelation 21:8). And that's no place for anyone who is called by Your name and being conformed to Your nature to proclaim Your truth and live it out by the power of Your grace.

You didn't die for a lie, but that I would live in Your truth. "For God has not given (me) a spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind" (2 Timothy 1:7). The "spirit of fear and timidity," the "spirit of cowardice," must go in Jesus' name! (2 Timothy 1:7 NLT, NRSV). And in it's place, come, Holy Spirit, and give me courage -- courage to take my stand for the truth, to take my stand for You and the honor of Your name. "For I am not ashamed of the Gospel" (Romans 1:16).

Your Word commands me to "stand firm" against "the spiritual forces of evil" however they manifest in my world -- whether through people, through culture, through institutions, or even through a compromising church (Ephesians 6:12). Your Word commands me to "Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around (my) waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness" along with "the whole armor of God" (Ephesians 6:13-14).

So by the power of Your grace, I do so. By the power of Your grace, may I continue to do so. And by the power of Your grace, may I "be strong and very courageous" to take my stand in Your truth and the honor of Your name, to live into the fullness of the kingdom of God, and to lead those You've entrusted to my charge to live there too, in the promise of Your harvest and the fullness of our inheritance in You (Joshua 1:6). In You, I can be "strong and very courageous; (not) frightened or dismayed, for the Lord (my) God is with (me) wherever (I) go" (Joshua 1:9). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

Tommy, I pray you are empowered to be strong and very courageous, to take your stand and see a great victory of God in the power and love and sound mind of Christ in you, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Pray Christmas - Day 5

Praying 25 Days of Christmas

December 5

  • Background to today’s prayer

    • How many times do you look down your nose at someone whose faults you know,

    • Or, you may not know their faults, but they are just different from you, and so you struggle with that.

    • And yet, God uses whom He wills. He is the One who decides who He’ll use.

    • I recently worked with the Alma Ministerial Association to put together a city-wide event, where we brought together a number of different denominations and ethnic groups to hold a day long event in each other’s areas.

    • The real blessing came afterwards when people said, “The next time we do this…”

TODAY’S PRAYER

Lord as we enter into the early part of this Christmas season, the advent of Your Son I am reminded that His lineage was not pure (Matthew 1:1-17 & Luke 3:23b-38), that there were many sinners, and Gentiles mixed into His line. Lord please forgive me for the times when I look down my nose at someone else. Lord, as well as I think I know, so many of someone else’s faults, I am reminded that You choose whom You want to choose. You use whom You want to use…to bring glory to Your name. Lord, I, less than all those that You use, deserve to be used, yet thank You for using me. And Lord just like the City of Alma put aside their racial differences for one day, October 15, 2011, Lord let this happen more and more, not just in Alma but in other small towns too. And Father, use me to foster it in these little towns I work in Lord.

Morning by Morning, December 4 - Eternity in Our Hearts, God's Presence Infusing Our Present

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Speak Your truth into my spirit, as my spirit embraced Your Spirit in the communion of prayer with You -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God.  ...

"For thus says the High and Lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:  I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with those who are contrite and humble in spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite.... Peace, peace, to the far and the near, says the Lord; and I will heal them" (Isaiah 57:15-19).

You inhabit eternity. And at the same time, in the mystery of faith and the trans-dimensional nature of Your Presence, You also inhabit us. And it's humility that welcomes Your habitation.

As I humble myself in Your sight, You lift me up (James 4:10). As I humble myself in Your sight, I draw near to You and You draw near to me (James 4:8). When I acknowledge my desperate need of You, my desperate dependence upon You alone, You fill my heart with Your Presence and revive my spirit with Your Life. "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.... Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God" (Matthew 5:3-8).

When heaven infuses my heart, eternity infuses my present. When the Presence of God fills my heart, my heart is full of the hope of eternity and my heart is full of "the High and Lofty One who inhabits eternity." That's how You created me, and that's how You've created me to experience You and the eternity of Your Presence right here, right now, in my present. You "put eternity in (our) hearts" (Ecclesiastes 3:11 NKJV). So You invite me to pray with expectant faith that my spirit may be infused with Your Spirit, that I "may be filled with all the fullness of God" (Ephesians 3:19 and 5:18).

My body is Your temple; my heart is Your home. And Your Word asks of us as Your children and Your disciples, "Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? ... God's temple is holy, and you are that temple" (1 Corinthians 3:16-17). You've prepared a place for me, and You invite me to prepare a place for You -- right here in my heart, where Your eternity infuses my present -- saying to all who have ears to hear and a heart to receive, "where I AM, there you may be also" (John 14:3). "Anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with Him" (1 Corinthians 6:17).

So come, Holy Spirit -- Spirit of the Living God. Come live in me; come dwell in me; come fill Your temple with Your glory, as Your eternity infuses my present and Your Presence infuses my spirit. You've put this desire of eternity in my heart, just as You've put this passion for this unity and intimacy of communion with You in my spirit. So come, be One within me, as You make me one with You -- Father, Son and Holy Spirit of God (John 17:20-26). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

Beloved one, I pray God's Presence infuses your present, with His glory filling the temple of your heart, as you draw near to Him in humility and He draws near to You in His intimacy and love, in Jesus' name! Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Pray Christmas - Day 4

9651036096?profile=original

Praying 25 Days of Christmas

December 4

  • Background to today’s prayer

    • Do you pray for revival?

    • Have you ever thought about how it might come to us…especially here in the USA?

    • Friends, it will not come without brokenness.

    • And realize, that when I say brokenness, I mean brokenness IN THE  CHURCH!!!

    • The world will not change until AFTER we do.

    • With that in mind, let’s go to today’s prayer.

TODAY’S PRAYER

In the counsels of eternity past, even though Your Son came to save the Israelites and Jerusalem in particular, the Godhead knew He’d lament over Jerusalem (Matthew 23:37). Lord this is also Your heart for the church. Even though we reject You by our lukewarmness, You want to gather us up, like a hen gathers her chicks, but we are unwilling. Forgive us Lord and give us another chance. Be merciful to us one more time by filling us with a brokenness for those around us, preceded by a brokenness on behalf of our sins, both individual sins and the corporate sins of the church. Father, give us the blessing of brokenness and then Lord, we will be willing to let You gather us under Your wings.
