Equipping Resources

Virtual Prayer Walks Using Google Earth, Maps

Posted by John Saddington on May 12, 2010

When I was doing mission work in Sarajevo, Bosnia I remember having weekly prayer walks around the city and particular areas of significance.

It was powerful and a rich experience and lesson in trusting God for His provision, favor and Will for the city and for our work there.

But I haven’t been in Bosnia in years… but with technology I could potentially take “virtual” prayer walks via Google Maps and Google Earth! >>>Click

  • REQUEST >>>

A local church leader asked me for resources, direction, agenda, etc. for having a local church prayer team retreat. I am checking with other prayer leaders to see what you have done in the past or if you know of any good resources. (Or if you know anyone who has led these kind of retreats)

She will be leading a Saturday day-time retreat with those who are the intercessory prayer team for a 1,200 member - 5 year old church of mostly young people.

Let me know if you have any suggestions or recommendations. Thanks! Blessings, Thomas

SDSBA Prayer Strategy: The SDSBA Prayer Ministry will encourage and assist SDSBA pastors in increasing the impact of prayer in their local churches and in the San Diego County community.

SDSBA will partner with local, national, and international churches and like-minded believers to mobilize an intercessory prayer covering for San Diego County so that churches and communities will experience an increased awareness of the presence, favor, and glory of God.
    • Dear Pastor Phil

Pamela Johnson Southern Baptist Missionary in Moshi, Tanzania, United Republic Of -- to the Maasai. She has set up a group on Pray Network as:
      TZ Maasai Connection
I share the help you gave us, and she tried, but like I, we were not able to get the maps up, so she set up a web page and uses pictures to help us pray. Her most recent report was of people coming to know the Lord in her area. Praise God.

I would like to know an easier way to use maps on a websight for prayer walking using virtual prayer—but pictures are also helpful.

Also, if any thing is know about particular areas in the area where focused prayer is asked, please share it. I may help intercessors in praying for that area.

      Blessings,

      Brother Lewis Turner

Type the text for your prayer stops into a text file, this helps repair typographical errors
Create a webpage to host your prayer walk.
    Creating the Prayer Walk

    Start Google Earth
    Select Add > New Folder
    Give your folder a name
Enter a description for the folder if you want
Zoom to the view you want users to have when they first begin the prayer walk
    Click “Snap Shot Current View
    Click OK
Find the folder in the list on the left
    Click on the folder
The click on the Yellow Pushpin at the top of the page. Pop up box says “Add Placemark.”
Move pin to location you wish to mark. (or enter the latitude and longitude)
Enter a name for the location (This is what appears on the map as a label)
Type your prayer requests into the Description box.
    Select the View tab
Zoom to the view you want users to end on when they select the item.
Click the “Snapshop Current View” button at the bottom.
Change the look and color of the label text using the Style, Color tab.
To add a photo to your prayer location
Your photo must be loaded someplace that is accessible from the internet. A NAMB web folder, a Picasso photo gallery that does not require a password etc.
Navigate to the photo and copy the url for the photo itself. Not the webpage. NAMB folder photos have the url on the image file.
Put your cursor on the tab where you would like to photo to be. Before, after or in the middle of the text.
Paste the url and put %E2%80%9D after the url replace ### with the px width and height you want the photo to display size to be in your text box. It will look something like:
Ex. JOYHOUSE_CROPSM.JPG Notice there are no spaces between characters and “ marks.

Change the pushpin by clicking on the image next to the Name box.
    When finished click OK.
Repeat steps 5 and 6 until all stops are created.
When ready to publish right click on the folder. (be sure it is the folder not one of the places)
    Select Properties and then View
Zoom to view you want to begin the prayer walk with and click “Snapshot current view” button.
    Click OK.
Right click on the folder again and click “Save Place As” to save the prayerwalk to kmz format
    Go to http://maps.google.com
Log in (you will need a Google username and password)
    After login click My Maps
    Then click Import.
Browse to the location where you saved your kmz file in step 8.a
Click “Upload From File.” Your prayerwalk will now appear in the Map window.
Click “Link” just above the map on the right.
Highlight the characters in the box labeled “Paste HTML to embed in website” This is what you will paste into your webpage. It will look something like:

View New Tour.kmz in a larger map You will need to paste this into your webpage directly into the html code.

NOTE: You can edit the way your map displays on your page if you click “Customize and preview embedded map” just below the box referenced in step 9.g

You can set a custom map size 400 x 325 is recommended.
You can set the display Map, Satellite, or Terrain.
You can zoom to the map view you want.
And you can remove the labels that display on the map.
Once you have made you selections copy the code in the box below the map and paste into the html code on your webpage.

If you do not have a website to post the prayer walk to you can click the Unlisted or Public radio button and post it on the Google Map website. Public makes it visible to all Google users, unlisted means you must share the url with those you want to be able to view the prayer walk. Share the link using the Link button from step 9.f and email the link in the top box to those you want to view the prayer walk.

To use a photo from web album you need the url for the photo not the album. Get this by viewing the properties of the photo.

  • This is a great idea! I'm going to pass it on!
  • This is awesome. I would love to learn how to do this for my team here in Tanzania. Is there somewhere to go to learn how to develop this kind of Virtual Prayer Walk?
  • Interesting concept. Wouldn't it be great to use a method like this and pray with others in another country joining with them in agreement for a city? A great idea. Matt 18:19
