In my hunger for becoming a disciplemaker, I found Dallas Willard's The Great Omission written in 2006. He says "I often tell people I can give them one verse that is worth more than any college education, and it is Joshua 1:8. It will guarantee them the life that they only dimly dream to be possible."

I thought this was a great way for me to make disciples, especially since I work for a college!

So I made Joshua 1:8 my memory verse for this week.

"Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful."

Do you have any thoughtprovoking verses like Joshua 1:8 that I can focus on this week?

Tom

  • "I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings." (Luke 16:9-13). How precious is a soul to God? Luke 16:1-13 describes a situation many have wrestled with for ages. How is it that this manager, about to be given a pink slip, gains praise from his employer when he ends his career by stealing more from him? Keys are found in Matthew 6:19-21, 25:29; I Corinthians 4:1-2; Romans 14:12; James 4:14; Hebrews 9:27; I Timothy 6:17-19, and especially John 15:14. Is the real question what will I do with the life God has loaned to me?
  • Since you work for a college here's a good couple of verses for young people.
    25Look straight ahead,
    and fix your eyes on what lies before you.
    26Mark out a straight path for your feet;
    stay on the safe path.
    27Don’t get sidetracked;
    keep your feet from following evil. (Pr 4:25-27 NLTse)
  • Psalms 34:7,9 "The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them. Fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing."

    Tom, may the Lord help & bless you in your efforts of hiding his word in your heart. It's reassuring to think God provides us with everything we need in carrying out his will. I also like Josh 1:9 as well. " 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

    Tom, thanks for sharing. I pray the Lord fill you with His strength, power and influence for accomplishing His great work in your life!!!!

    Blessings on you and your family!!!
    In Christ,
    Allen
  • I like JOSHUA 1:9 too: Be strong and of good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whethersoever thou goest.

    I also like a quote by Jack Hayford: "We must help people not only fall in love with the Savior but also to fall at the feet of the King."
  • James 1:22 is the test of who is deluded and who is not.

    James 1:22, "But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves."

  • Thank you Tom

    Colossians 1:9-12 (The Message)

     9-12Be assured that from the first day we heard of you, we haven't stopped praying for you, asking God to give you wise minds and spirits attuned to his will, and so acquire a thorough understanding of the ways in which God works. We pray that you'll live well for the Master, making him proud of you as you work hard in his orchard. As you learn more and more how God works, you will learn how to do your work. We pray that you'll have the strength to stick it out over the long haul—not the grim strength of gritting your teeth but the glory-strength God gives. It is strength that endures the unendurable and spills over into joy, thanking the Father who makes us strong enough to take part in everything bright and beautiful that he has for us.

  •

    Keeping the old covenant Book of the Law in mind is not what new testament Christians need to be doing!  Under the new covenant, those who have received a new mind and heart have different thoughts:

    Heb 3:1 ... holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus ...

    Why?  2 Pet 1:3   gives us the answer:   His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him ...

  • LOVE that!!

    Beth Wallstrom said:
    Yes! Psalm 119:99: "I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes." It's God's word that disciples us, waters us, feeds us, and makes us wise.
  • Tom, look to Duet 28-30 for the same principle and specific promises and results. But, Joshua 1:8 can't be beat for summing it up.
  • Thank you everyone for your recommendations and wisdom.
