Psalm 119:91
By your appointment they stand this day, for all things are your servants.

That sense of being manifest, Lord. Your word fixed in the heavens, You enduring faithfulness, the establishment of the creation, all speaking of You and by You to the world. There for all to see, and all do see for the vehement denials of many are the kicking against what they know to be true and know that they are powerless to change.

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to write the foreword for a book by R. T. Kendall entitled The Lord's Prayer.

I was glad to write it, not only because R. T. is a friend of mine, but also because it is a great book. I went back and adapted it to share some of my thoughts on prayer here at the blog.

We live in a world where communication feels like a pandemic at times. Words, ideas, and even emotions move about with unstoppable velocity. The human race has honed the science and art of transporting our content to one another. But I fear that we are at the mercy of the mediums and are losing our own messages. >>>

Psalm 27:4-7
One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in his temple. For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock. And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me, and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the LORD. Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud; be gracious to me and answer me!

Here's the answer to my dilemma about the relationship with our ministry partners; You will hide me in Your shelter and conceal me in Your tent, but I am to sing and make melody with shouts of joy. Back to "Let the praise of God be ever in my mouth and a two edged sword in my hands."

So it is to be a day of praising You and blessing them

AFRICA PRAYS for AMERICA
50,000 Expected to Gather in Prayer at Capitol Mall in Washington DC
Washington DC –
50,000 people, Africans and Americans alike, are expected to descend upon the Capitol West Mall in Washington DC on Saturday, October 16, 2010 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and participate in Africa Prays For America, a unique and unprecedented prayer gathering hosted by the African Strategic Leadership Prayer Network (www.aslpn.org).
African Strategic Leadership Prayer Network (ASLPN), an assembly of African Christian leaders from around the world, is a non-profit Christian charitable organization dedicated to prayer and intercession. The ASLPN said, “We are coming, leaders and lay people, we are coming from dozens of African Nations, we are coming 50,000 strong to petition heaven in unity. We, African believers, call all Christians to join us on October 16 to pray for America. May our light never go out.”
Billy Wilson, Executive Director of the Awaking America Alliance (www.awakeningamerica.us) said, “For hundreds of years, America has been sending missionaries to Africa. Passionate men and women gave their lives to reach souls thousands of miles away and continue to bring the gospel to millions in that heartland. But now, America’s light grows dim and it is Africa’s time to reach out and pray for America.” Wilson continued, “We are grateful for the African Nations response to America’s spiritual need and deeply encouraged by their desire to bring Christians together to intercede on behalf of America through prayer.”
Pastor Michael Dada from Deeper Life Bible Church (www.deeperlifedc.org) in Washington, DC, said, "The nation of America has been a blessing to almost every other nation under heaven at the peak of her glory. The poor and the weak, both as a nation and as individuals have all taken refuge under her protective wings. But, now that the glory of America is fading away like the stars of the morning, is the time for all the beneficiaries of her glory to arise and cry out in prayer to the Lord with passion for the restoration of United States of America.
“My church and I have decided to join Africa Prays for America,” Pastor Dada continued, “because we believe that God will have mercy and restore the spiritual, political, economic and social status of America for His glory. (Haggai 2:9) “The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.”
On April 26, 2008 in Louisville KY, the Awakening American Alliance, through its Executive Director, Billy Wilson, invited African Pastors and leaders to join with the American church in crying out to God for revival in the Church and for a spiritual awakening in the nation.
In response to this invitation, the African Strategic Leadership Prayer Network (ASLPN) was formed on April 28, 2008. ASLPN also participated in Empowered21 (www.empowered21.com) in April 2010 and most recently in an African Day Prayer and Worship Service held on May 22, 2010 in Washington DC. ASLPN invites every tribe, every community, every church and every city to participate in Africa Prays for America on October 16, 2010.
Bishop Darlingston Johnson, Senior Pastor of Bethel World Outreach Church and Presiding Prelate of Bethel World Outreach Ministries International (www.bwomi.org), said, “We are gathering together the African Church to pray for this nation because more than ever America desperately depends on the prayers of the church. We know and it is our firm belief, in the constant conflict between Heaven and Hell or the sayers of this earth firmly believing, prayer is the deciding factor.”

Psalm 27:1-3

Of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall. Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet I will be confident.

Years and years, Lord, years and years, You have demonstrated Your constancy and faithfulness. time after time, day after day, You stand between me and all assaults; if I remember to turn to You. This is a "no other gods before me" concept. I must turn to You for guidance and solace, You are at my side, but I must acknowledge Your presence and seek Your face. Then I can join with David and shout, "I am confident that my Lord is with me."

There were 1,200 volunteers from 38 different congregations and many more social agencies came together to serve 3,100 people in about 4 hours. Over 1,800 people wanted to be prayed for, and about 60 made the decision to follow Jesus. Good stuff. Now please pray as I help shepherd the ongoing impact of this event. .

calendar 2

Please pray for these other events on my calendar over the next month. Specifically that my heart & the hearts of those who attend would be prepared.

  3. 2) Tom White is right now having multiple meetings with pastors & leaders in Beijing, China, casting vision for future Prayer Summits.

Again, I am so grateful for your prayers. Click here and I will know that you have prayed for (at least some of) these items.

Prayer Summit Praise Report from our Friends in Miami!

We just returned from our 15th annual Miami Pastor’s Prayer Summit. Altogether there were 60 of us. As always, it was different from other summits but a blessed time. Over 60% were Hispanics, with 17% Blacks { African Americans, Carribean Blacks, Haitians } , 15% Anglos and a few Brazilians. It was interesting that about 25% of the group had never attended a prayer summit before but caught the atmosphere of the summit almost at once. One special time was when a 75 year old leader was asked to pray for all those under 40, as they stood together in the middle- almost like passing the mantle on to the younger ones. We came out of this summit with a commitment to pray more fervently for Miami. Each church will prayer walk their communities the first Saturday of each month. Some are already doing this regularly and gave testimonies of answered prayer in their communities.

Blessings,

Dennis Fuqua

Psalm 26:9-12

Do not sweep my soul away with sinners, nor my life with bloodthirsty men, in whose hands are evil devices, and whose right hands are full of bribes. But as for me, I shall walk in my integrity; redeem me, and be gracious to me. My foot stands on level ground; in the great assembly I will bless the LORD.

Thank You and praise You that I can turn to you in my distress, knowing that You will provide a level ground to stand on. I know that You stand between me and all the wiles of the Evil One, that Your grace is a might bulwark, an impregnable shield if I keep my eyes on You and seek Your Kingdom first in all my life. Praise You, Lord.

Psalm26:6-8
I wash my hands in innocence and go around your altar, O LORD, proclaiming thanksgiving aloud, and telling all your wondrous deeds. O LORD, I love the habitation of your house and the place where your glory dwells.

Lord, give me the boldness, give me the willingness to speak Your name, proclaim Your glory, shout of Your goodness, mercy and love to all and sundry. Let there be no lapse in my testimony, either by word or deed. Lord. cause me to be a big mouth for You.

God Calling

The person who is living a praying life is not circumstance-driven, but Christ-driven; not problem-centered, but Power-centered. Our frame of reference is not what we lack, but what God has. We define our lives within the context of eternity instead of time.

I find it interesting that when Abram, later to be Abraham, is first introduced on the pages of Scripture, he is defined by what he lacked. We first encounter his name in the lengthy lineage recorded in Genesis 11. All the other men were described in terms of whom they begot. Whom they fathered. Abram is described by his failure to father an heir. That's what we learn about him first of all. The narrative tells us that Abram took a wife named Sarai, and that Sarai was barren and had no child (Gen. 11:20). Abram, who was destined to stand front-and-center as the very definition of a living faith, is introduced not as brave Abram, or faithful Abram, or kind Abram… just childless Abram. Defined by lack.

Why? I ask. When there were so many other things to say about Abram, why turn the spotlight on the one thing he lacks? I think the reason is that by shining the light on the lack, the Scripture rivets our attention on the cusp of re-creation. We can't look away. How will a God who so directly calls our attention to Abram's greatest sorrow and humiliation, show Himself the life-creator? Watch Him work!

Have you noticed this about God? He never avoids the issue. He never spins the facts or brushes reality under the rug. Up Front God. Look how Paul summarizes Abraham's situation: "Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, 'So shall your offspring be.' Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead--since he was about a hundred years old--and that Sarah's womb was also dead. Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised"
(Romans 4:18-21). God just puts it out there. The bad news is just setting the stage for the good that is about to come.

It's like He's calling our attention to the need so that when the supply is revealed, we won't be focused elsewhere and miss the power display. Abram's paucity has a starring role in the eternal drama. Playing opposite the power and provision of God, Abram's need offsets the wonder of God's plan so that we are nearly blinded by its luster.

As if in Abram's lack, God is saying, "Right here! This is exactly where I am about to apply my power. Take a good look. See the barren sterile, dried up dream? See the death of hope? Right here is where I'm working!"

Resurrection God. From Abraham-- as good as dead-- and Sarah-- whose womb was also dead, came Isaac. Laughter. Joy. Merriment. Celebration. Life that came from death-- Resurrection.

Paul calls Him "the God who gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they were" (Romans 4:17). Are these two descriptive phrases two ways of stating the same thing? I think so. These words are presented to us within Paul's description of the miraculous birth of Isaac. Life that came out of death. Paul says that He "calls" those things which are not as though they were. Call can mean to call aloud, utter in a loud voice, invite; to call by name. When did Jesus "cry out in a loud voice" and bring life out of death? John 11:43, as He stood at the grave of Lazarus. "Lazarus, come out!" Called out loud.

I think the Scripture is saying that God steps right into the middle of mucky, messy death-- all-hope-lost death; no-way-out death; not-gonna-happen death-- and He calls out, "Life, come out!" And the voice of the in-the-beginning God reproduces the earth's opening act. He calls order out of chaos. He calls something out of nothing. He calls life out of death.

The lack sets the stage for the provision. Death lays the groundwork for resurrection.

In your praying life, is there a big, hot light on your need? Does it seem to define you right now? You don't have to pretend its not there. In fact, show it off. That's where God is about to apply His power.

Kairos Strength

In 1 Samuel 30, we read the account of David and his men returning to Ziklag after being away, and finding that the Amalekites had attacked Ziklag, burned it with fire, and taken the women and children captive. Verse 6 says, “Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.”

.

Prior to this event, David had already suffered much at the hand of Saul. This could have been David’s last straw; He could have given up. Instead, he chose to strengthen himself in the Lord, consult God about the situation, and go into the enemies camp to retrieve all that was stolen. He then shared the spoil from that battle with friends and leaders in Judah. Because of this victory, he gained favor at a kairos (strategic) moment in the kingdom: While David and his men were getting their stuff back, Saul was killed in battle. It was time for David to rule. By the time David got to Hebron to take over the kingdom, “he had a great army, like the army of God.” If David had not encouraged himself in the Lord, he would not have had an army, and he would not have had the favor or strength to rule.

.

If we do not encourage ourselves in the Lord, we will not have the strength to rule. We don’t always know how close we are to the next God moment, or how near we are to breakthrough in a situation. Opposition precedes miracle, and often the darkest hour is just before dawn. We need “Kairos Strength” - strength to seize the moment, press through the doors, and be ready for opportune times. This requires determination to maintain ourselves in the spirit, and not yield to the weakness of emotion. How did David strengthen himself in the Lord? How did he get through his hardships? Psalm 27 is a good example of how David drew from His relationship with God.

.

Psalm 27: 1-3: The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked came against me To eat up my flesh, My enemies and foes, They stumbled and fell. Though an army may encamp against me, My heart shall not fear; Though war may rise against me, In this I will be confident.(David is confident He will be victorious in God. He is strengthening himself in truth and exalting God at the same time.)

.

Psalm 27:4-5: One thing I have desired of the LORD, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD, And to inquire in His temple. For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion; In the secret place of His tabernacle He shall hide me; He shall set me high upon a rock.(There is a hiding place in God that David knows will protect and sustain him. Again, he is declaring truth, strengthening himself, and exalting God.)

.

Psalm 27:6: And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me; Therefore I will offer sacrifices of joy in His tabernacle; I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the LORD. (David has strength and authority over his enemies. In spite of them and even before them, he is joyful in God’s house and sings praises to the Lord.)

.

Psalm 27:7-9: Hear, O LORD, when I cry with my voice! Have mercy also upon me, and answer me. When You said, "Seek My face," My heart said to You, "Your face, LORD, I will seek." Do not hide Your face from me; Do not turn Your servant away in anger; You have been my help; Do not leave me nor forsake me, O God of my salvation.

.

Notice that all of a sudden, the psalm turns from strong declaration of faith, to pleas for God’s presence and favor. Lord, I know the truth, I know all I have said is so, but the threat is real and circumstances are pressing in…don’t leave me now. Then, in the very next breath, he says, “When my father and my mother forsake me, Then the LORD will take care of me.”

.

This is the secret to David’s victory in praise and prayer: The Holy Spirit is downloading truth as David prays, and David is being enlightened and strengthened in the midst of his situation. He is magnifying God, building himself up in truth, and declaring truth to the spiritual forces around him as He makes his declarations. As the forces around him, the storms swirling in his life, try to press in and draw him out of that place of faith and strength, he lifts his plea to the Lord, and an immediate response springs forth from the spirit: “When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take care of me.” The Holy Spirit has answered his spirit, and his heart cry changes from “Lord, do not leave me”… to… “when my father and my mother forsake me, Then the Lord will take care of me.” This is the power of prayer, the power of declaration, and the power of Holy Spirit as counselor, always leading us back to truth, as we purpose to exalt Him in the midst of our circumstances.

.

His next words acknowledge the teaching power of the Spirit, interacting with his prayer and worship, as he says in verse 11: Teach me Your way, O LORD, And lead me in a smooth path, because of my enemies. Then in verse 12-13, he again moves from faith declaration to prayer and pleas for protection, yet still acknowledging His faith in the Lord: Do not deliver me to the will of my adversaries; For false witnesses have risen against me, And such as breathe out violence. I would have lost heart, unless I had believed That I would see the goodness of the LORD In the land of the living.

.

Finally, in verse 14, he states what he has just been doing in verse 1-13, and declares the results: Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD!

.

Wait on the Lord, and He shall strengthen your heart. As David worshipped and magnified God, declaring His goodness and faithfulness, He received answers to his doubts and fears, and his heart was strengthened. The pressing of the enemy served to draw him closer to God, the enemy’s attempts to spiral him into despair were defeated, and God was further glorified in realms of the spirit as demonic powers were rendered powerless to defeat David’s strength in God. God meets us in our hour of need as we declare His word and ask for His help.

.

We see this process again in Psalms 40:1-3: I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD.

.

As we wait and pray, we are pulled out of those pits that would swallow us up, and we are established with confidence on the rock of Christ. Our spirits leap with songs of praise, even as others see God’s work in our lives, and put their trust in Him.

.

Throughout the Psalms, we see David sharing the depths of his pain and struggles, and in his prayer/praises to God, being lifted up on the wings of joy in the spirit. David was real with God. He had emotions, but he didn’t yield to them. He brought his struggles to God, he waited on the Lord, and the spirit strengthened Him in truth.

.

Now let’s look at the disciples. In Mark 14, we read the account of their time with Jesus in Gethsemane. “And He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be troubled and deeply distressed. Then He said to them, ‘My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch.’ …Then He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, ‘Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour? Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.’”

.

The disciples had a face to face relationship with Jesus for 3 years, yet they still needed to watch and pray for strength, for in their flesh, they were weak. Is it possible that you can be in the presence of God for years, but never going through anything, never pressing into anything, never standing on His word for anything, always yielding to your wants and emotions, you can be weak? The disciples were weak, and on this day, unprepared.

.

David strengthened himself in his Kairos moment. The disciples slept, and then they fled. They were not yet ready to rule, but Jesus already knew that, and He had prayed for them. During the crucifixion and in the days that followed, the disciples were sifted, emptied, broken, and humbled. Then Pentecost came, and the church was born, but it was not just Pentecost that enabled them to carry that awesome move of God. It was the time in the upper room, in prayer, in hunger, in brokenness, in expectant waiting. When the Spirit came in fire, they were ready for the filling and they were ready for the commission.

.

In this hour, we are waiting for another Pentecost, another Azusa St., and even greater than that, but there is something beyond Pentecost. The Lord can pour out His Spirit and we can still be weak and ineffective. The Corinthian church is our biblical model for that. We are looking for Kingdom rule, Kingdom authority, maturity in Christ. It’s about more than just getting our stuff back, more than getting our needs met, it is about Christ manifested on earth and the Father’s house being filled.

.

We are being made ready, and we are going through some trails. We’re learning how to fight, and how to encourage and strengthen ourselves in the Lord. We have also been challenged to give up; challenged by offense, sickness, discouragement, financial hardship, etc. Now is not the time to quit, for if we don’t fight the battle, we don’t win the victory.

.

Theodore Roosevelt said, Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure... than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.” Another word for grey twilight is comfort zone. It can cause us to avoid the very things that can propel us into a triumphant life and true liberty. Salvation is free, but true kingdom living is taken by force. It is time to watch and pray, to choose strength over comfort and to encourage ourselves in the Lord. We never know when we are on the brink of a Kairos moment in God.

A Church full of Prayerless members

I have been active in the Southern Baptist denomination for the past thirty-five years. I was discipled by men who taught me how to spend time on prayer and intercession early in my walk with Christ. My first experience in an all night prayer meeting was within the first five months of my Christian life. SInce then I have had the opporutnity to particiapte in many all night and even prolonged days of prayer on many occcasions.

I have participated in several all day prayer and fasting experiences and found them to restore and rejuvenate my walk with Christ. There is however a sad and troubling commentary I have discovered as I have taught in several churches I am reminded of the condition of our churches as far as our commitment to prayer and intercession goes.

Permit me to share with you my latest poll on prayer at a recent conference where I taught two sessions on "The Prayer Life of Jesus and the Early Church." From my two sessions I had a total of twelve church leaders attend, the average age was 65 and over. I began my sessions by asking three questions of those who attended. All of these atending had been in SBC churches for over forty years.

The first question was "What was the longest time you have ever spent in prayer in your life?" The average answer was fifteen minutes.

THe second question was, "How much time does your church spend praying for the lost per week?" The average response was three minutes or less.

The third question was, "Have you ever had anyone teach you how to spend a prolonged period in prayer?" Out of the twelve who attended the two sessions, there was only one preson who indicated that they had ever had anyone teach them how to spend a prolonged period in prayer in their life.

A convicting point during the session came when we read Romans 8:34 and Hebrews 7:25 and they had to answer the question, "When are we most like Jesus?" As the adults wrestled with this question in light of these passages they all reached the conclusion that we are most like Jesus when we are interceeding for others.

A most disturbing trend is occurring in our churches, we are giving ourselves to more and more marketing strategy and less and less prayer movements. A point of encouragement though was that those who attended these sessions mentioned how convicted they were about what they had done with prayer in the past. Perhaps God will raise up a generation of seniors who will take to their knees for the next generation. I am hopeful.

Standing in the Gap until He comes,

Pastor phil

Of David. Vindicate me, O LORD, for I have walked in my integrity, and I have trusted in the LORD without wavering. Prove me, O LORD, and try me; test my heart and my mind. For your steadfast love is before my eyes, and I walk in your faithfulness. I do not sit with men of falsehood, nor do I consort with hypocrites. I hate the assembly of evildoers, and I will not sit with the wicked.

David can make these positive statements, Lord, but I cannot. I don't need proving, I need improving. I don't need the testing of an assay to prove my worth; I need a quality control test to highlight my shortcomings. I need the continued teaching and leading of the Holy Spirit to rasp away at the flaws of my nature, to grind at those affections that stand between me and faithful obedience. Thank You, Lord, that I can come to You, pleading for relief, knowing that You take pleasure in seeing this child of Yours learn to walk in Your Kingdom.

Psalm 25:16-22

Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. The troubles of my heart are enlarged; bring me out of my distresses. Consider my affliction and my trouble, and forgive all my sins. Consider how many are my foes, and with what violent hatred they hate me. Oh, guard my soul, and deliver me! Let me not be put to shame, for I take refuge in you. May integrity and uprightness preserve me, for I wait for you. Redeem Israel, O God, out of all his troubles.

Guard my soul, Lord, guard my soul. Guard it from the attacks of the Evil One who would destroy my testimony to the power of Your love and mercy. Guard it from those attacks which would discourage me and cause me to focus on my shortcomings rather than on Your strength. Lead me, Lord, to be an active agent for Your Kingdom.

Psalm 119:82
My eyes long for your promise; I ask, "When will you comfort me?"

Your promise is that You will manifest Yourself to me. I long for the complete manifestation, the total presence, the constant awareness of You in me and I in You. I call for that promise, Lord. Transform me into Your image.

Hand Made

I realized something this morning that I had not seen quite so clearly before. It jumped out and surprised me today. I was considering that the power of God’s Word that created the universe is as powerful now as it was in the beginning. When God says “Let there be…”, molecules accumulate into matter, atoms bond together into mass, cell fuses to cell and things which were not, now exist. When the breath of His mouth rushes out to vocalize His Word, even the tiniest neutrino is ordered into lockstep with His command.

Then I started thinking about His breath . It takes breath to form a word. Have you ever been with someone whose breathing is compromised? They can’t speak easily. Breath is the transporter of words and without breath, words are imprisoned inside the mind and have no outlet.

Then I started thinking about how He breathed the breath of life into the human He created on the sixth day—the pinnacle of His creation. That led me to consider – and here is the picture that took me by surprise—that He created the human differently than the way He created everything else.

Everything else was formed by His Word, but the human was formed by His hands.

As I observed with my imagination how God shaped the human—formed him, molded and sculpted him—I was awed by the intimacy of touch that was being acted out. How God left His fingerprints and His DNA all over the human. How He took the time to tenderly create this Self-expression with His own hands. Down in the dirt, one with the clay from which He sculpted. He made the human from the dust of the earth He had just created. Earthy.

Then—and now the intimacy is stunning—then He breathes. He leans over this earthy man, covers the human’s mouth with His own, and breathes.

The man formed of earth is filled with the life of the heavenlies. Heaven and earth meet, and life as God intended appears. What was not, now had become. When God breathed, He breathed into the human. Not around him, or over him. He breathed the Word into him.

With the fall, the man who started out earthy—all earth—was once again earthy. When Jesus, the last adam, appeared in earth’s environment, once again heaven and earth met. When the day came for the Word to indwell mankind again, He breathed. (John 20:22)

Psalm 25:12-15
Who is the man who fears the LORD? Him will he instruct in the way that he should choose. His soul shall abide in well-being, and his offspring shall inherit the land. The friendship of the LORD is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant. My eyes are ever toward the LORD, for he will pluck my feet out of the net.

I am stepping forward this day to claim my inheritance, to take hold of those promises of well-being and friendship. You do direct my eyes towards You, You have plucked my feet out of the net of despair and discouragement and given me clear direction in Your way. I have no need to fear the Evil One for You are my shield. Praise You, Lord.

Was the “Great Recession” caused by greed?

Was the “Great Recession” caused by greed? Proponents of this view will tell you that the US economy was brought to its knees by greedy traders on Wall Street who created exotic derivatives. Supposedly, these financial instruments created huge amounts of wealth, which now lines the pockets of those investors. I have even heard it said that this is the first economic downturn caused by a moral issue: greed.

I believe that the true cause of the “Great Recession” goes much deeper than “credit default swaps.” Credit Default Swaps (CDS) are basically an insurance policy that an institution may buy to protect itself against a borrower who defaults. Things took a strange twist when the market created default swaps that could be sold to someone who had not even lent money. These “naked default swaps” actually came to make up the majority of the CDS market. When the housing bubble burst, the institutions that issued the CDSs owed more money than they had, creating a crisis for lenders. Thus, the “Great Recession.”

Why were CDSs so attractive to investors? Shrewd investors understood what was really going on in the housing market. They knew that people were eventually going to default on their loans. Too many people had loans that they could not afford. Investors understood this fact, and bet on it to the tune of trillions of dollars.

The environment that allowed this to happen was created by the Community Reinvestment Act, which was passed originally passed in 1977 as a method to reduced discriminatory practices in lending. The intent was good, but taken too far. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke has commented that “social, economic, and regulatory factors contributed to the perception that banking institutions were failing to adequately serve the credit needs of some residents of their communities.”

This perception was taken a step further when advocacy groups began to criticize banks’ lending practices, as a result of the Financial Institution Reform and Recovery Act of 1989. This act increased the visibility of banks’ lending practices, and was used by advocacy groups to put pressure on lenders to reduce their lending criteria.
Here lies the real cause of the “Great Recession.”

It is difficult to characterize all advocacy groups’ philosophies, but groups forcing lenders to lend with unsound criteria typically argue that all people deserve equal opportunities, regardless of a person’s lifestyle. Underlying that idea is the assumption that all people are basically good. The thought is that people who act irresponsibly will change their behavior, if only given the right opportunities.

Those with a biblical worldview have a completely different understanding. A biblical worldview considers Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Outside of a life transformed by Christ, we cannot expect good things. People can try, but if the source of the well is dirty water, the well will contain dirty water.

There are consequences for our sin. “I have sworn with uplifted hand that they must bear the consequences of their sin, declares the Sovereign LORD” (Ezekiel 44:12). God will not be mocked; if people do the wrong things, they will suffer the consequences.

If we depart from God’s ways at the very basic level, we step onto a slippery slope that is very difficult to get away from. It was not greed that caused the “Great Recession,” but a misunderstanding of human nature. Greed was a part of a progression of events and actions based upon a faulty worldview. As we enter this election season, let us all pray that God would grant his wisdom to this country to make decisions based on truth and not lies.

Psalm 25:8-11
Good and upright is the LORD; therefore he instructs sinners in the way. He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way. All the paths of the LORD are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies. For your name's sake, O LORD, pardon my guilt, for it is great.

This is so good, Lord. You ask me to obey You as a demonstration of my love for You; then You provide the ability to be obedient as a demonstration of Your love for me. And then You fill my heart with the longing to be obedient and to be a demonstration of your love. This is so good, my Lord and my Master.

Psalm 25:4-7
Make me to know your ways, O LORD; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. Remember your mercy, O LORD, and your steadfast love, for they have been from of old. Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for the sake of your goodness, O LORD!

Lord, I need to know Your ways of comfort and healing. I need to understand Your paths that lead to the wisdom that brings peace to the afflicted, solace to the sorrowing and freedom to those who are bound by the lies of the Evil One. Not the psycho-babble of the age, but Your healing that drains the Slough of Despond.
