A Call to Repentance

A Call to Repentance

Five Signs

Joel concludes his first chapter with four things that he strongly suggests that should be done if the nation wanted to see recovery.  The same is true in our culture today.  We need to see a major recovery and yes a genuine Spirit-led revival.  Joel’s thoughts are exactly what needs to happen in today’s world.  If these things were to happen then a revival would follow.

Mourning Ministry

The first half of verse 13 tells the priests to put on sackcloth and mourn and wail before the altar.  This is a call for humility.  It calls for the clergy to spend time before the altar until the Spirit of the Lord comes to them.  Implied is a time of repentance.  It would be repentance for personal sin.  It is also repentance for the lack of passion for God.  Also it is repentance for the sin of thinking one church or denomination can bring the land back to the Lord.  It would be repentance for focusing on the external things and not the internal Spirit-led things.  It would be repentance that puts program over purity, method over mission, personal preferences over passionate prayer and possessions over people.  This mourning would lead to humility.  Without humility there is no revival.

Sacrificing Saints

In the second half of verse 13 he tells the saints (priests) to spend the night in sackcloth.  The offering that used to be given to the Lord were gone because of the locust invasion.  The only thing left for the priests to give was themselves.  There it is if our culture is to recover it will take a large group of people giving themselves to the Father for His purpose.  This is sacrifice of personal goals, ideas and direction and taking up what He wants to give.  Sacrifice involves allowing God to own all of your material possessions and to use them for what he would like to use them for.  Sacrifice will likely involve suffering.  Without sacrifice there is no remission for sin or any recovery.

Sacred Summoning

Joel makes it very clear that the nation is to call a holy fast.  Fasting has all but lost in the modern culture.  Fasting is too difficult.  It takes too much time (huh).  You mean I can’t eat or eat a restricted diet. What part of what Jesus, said, when He said when you fast.  (Matthew 6:16, 17)

Ladies and Gentlemen, if we are serious about our culture recovering then we will have to in droves begin to fast as a regular spiritual discipline and while we are at in sit (symbolical sacrifice of self) in sackcloth and ashes and mourn for the country.

Not only are we to begin a holy fast (which could last from 3-21 days*) but we are to summon those who are mature in the faith to a Sacred Assembly.  A Sacred Assembly is a daylong affair centered on knowing who God is. I believe that now is the time for the nation to call for this event to take place.  To those who dare to, gather your friends together on a day and spend it in prayer, fasting, reading scripture and learning who God is on an intimate level. #   This is a sign of obedience.

Prepare for the Power

In verse 15 Joel says that the day of the Lord is near and it will come with destruction from the Almighty God.  In Joel’s case the destruction had already come in the form of locusts destroying their way of life.  In the first blog post of this series it was spelled clearly that Joel’s locusts have come back.  The locusts have returned to America and we have been warned that they are here.  (It can be found on this page by scrolling down.  It is called An Invasion of Locusts) Do we really want to wait for the total destruction of our way of life like Joel’s day experienced before God judges us as well?  It is coming with swiftness and power.  Personally I would rather sacrifice now and get on my face before the Lord and pray for a change.  This is the sign of judgment.  We can either have the words of Joel 1:16, 17 as our fate or seek God desperately.

Finally

I really want to talk about this, but in prayer, the Lord showed me to post the verses and let the reader draw their own conclusion.

To you, O LORD, I call, for fire has devoured the open pastures and flames have burned up all the trees of the field.  Even the wild animals pant for you; the streams of water have dried up and fire has devoured the open pastures.  Joel 1:19, 20  NIV

That is very clear, don’t you think?

TERROR IN PLATEAU STATE, NIGERIA

by Elizabeth Kendal

Numbering around 30 million, the Fulani (also known as Fulbe) are the largest nomadic tribe in the world, with around half living in northern Nigeria. Like the traditionally nomadic Tuareg who are mostly based in northern Mali, the Fulani are spread over the Sahel, occupying a large area mostly south and east of the Tuareg zone. Just like the Tuareg, the Fulani have been impacted negatively by desertification and modernisation. As the desert has migrated south, so too have the Fulani. Traditionally nomadic cattle herders, they either urbanise or seek out new lands to graze their cattle. This brings them into conflict with the 'indigenes': settled, agrarian, mostly Christian tribes. Over recent decades, resurgent Islamic fundamentalist political ideology has been added to the volatile mix, paving the way for Islamists and jihadists to hijack local issues strategically for their own ends.

On Saturday morning 7 July some 100 ethnic Fulani (Muslim) herdsmen launched attacks on nine ethnic Berom (Christian) villages in Riyom and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Plateau State. Sources told Channels TV that around one hundred attackers stormed the villages commando-style, dressed in black attire with bullet-proof vests and sophisticated weapons. Sixty-three people were killed, dozens wounded and more than 60 homes were burned. The next day Christians and sympathetic Muslims, along with several political dignitaries, gathered in Matse village for a mass burial. During the funeral procession Fulani gunmen swept in firing indiscriminately, aided in their attack by uniformed soldiers. Whilst at least 22 mourners were killed, Nigerian security forces were able to repel the assailants, killing at least 16 of them and capturing one. A further 50 bodies were discovered later in Matse in the home of a Church of Christ in Nigeria (COCIN) pastor. It appears that the victims had been killed the previous day after they fled to the COCIN church for refuge. The pastor took them in but when the Fulani got word of it they surrounded the house and set it on fire.

Whilst the al-Qaeda-linked terror group Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the weekend's attacks, the violence does not bear the hallmarks of Boko Haram. Rather, it bears all the hallmarks of a Fulani raid. These raids have become all too common around the Plateau's ethnic-religious fault-line. It has long been suspected that partisan rogue elements within the Nigerian military are assisting both the Fulani in their raids and Boko Haram in their terror and that Boko Haram is inciting belligerent Fulani to kill Christians and is probably also participating in the attacks. Boko Haram terror receives attention because Boko Haram is demanding that Sharia Law be enacted across the nation. Because the Fulani's terror raids have local aims - ethnic cleansing and colonisation - they receive little attention. Consequently the Fulani - now with help from Boko Haram and rogue military - are inching south, village by village, terrorising, killing and displacing many thousands of Christians in the process.

On Saturday 14 July the Nigerian military ordered that residents be temporarily relocated out of five Fulani-dominated villages in Barkin Ladi and Riyom LGAs where terrorist elements are believed to be hiding out. A further five villages are on stand-by. Fulani leaders initially encouraged the Fulani to defy the military order and stay put even though a military sweep was imminent. However, on the Monday a deal was brokered that enabled a peaceful relocation of thousands of Fulani into temporary camps. It remains a very difficult and tense situation.

Christians of the Plateau are living in a state of fear, a state of siege. Bombed in their churches, slaughtered in their homes, they are not even safe in their beds at night. There is more to this than meets the eye: as Christ builds his Church, the spiritual battle intensifies. This trauma has its origins - and its victory - in heavenly realms!

PLEASE PRAY SPECIFICALLY THAT GOD WILL -

* draw Christian individuals, families, churches and communities ever closer to him - the LORD of hosts - for only in him is there comfort, restoration, encouragement, wisdom, justice and 'strength to turn back the battle at the gate'. (See Isaiah 28:5,6.)

* work through Nigerian political, civic and religious leadership to address practical issues of governance and security for the sake of his Church and the spread of the Gospel.

* bind the forces of evil in heavenly realms that seek to exploit human sinfulness to erect bulwarks against the gospel and send the Holy Spirit with quickening power to open eyes, minds and hearts across Nigeria, that Jesus will be exalted and troubled communities might be transformed.

'Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.' (Matthew 18:18 ESV.)

SUMMARY TO USE IN BULLETINS UNABLE TO RUN THE WHOLE ARTICLE

TERROR IN PLATEAU STATE, NIGERIA

On Saturday 7 July some 100 Fulani (Muslim) herdsmen launched attacks on nine Berom (Christian) villages in Riyom and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas of Plateau State. Wearing bullet-proof vests and armed with sophisticated weapons, they killed 63 people, wounded dozens and torched more than 60 homes. The next day they attacked the funeral, killing another 22. A further 50 bodies were found later in the burnt-out home of a local pastor who had sheltered fleeing Christians. Boko Haram claimed responsibility but the terror bears all the hallmarks of a Fulani raid aimed at ethnic cleansing and colonisation. Boko Haram incites and participates in the killings, with rogue elements in the military aiding both Boko Haram and the Fulani. Christians are not safe anywhere. Please pray.

We suggest that churches and fellowships using the above Summary might also provide a copy of the listed prayer points to be used in their worship by people who are leading in prayer.

As several of us were having breakfast together on Friday morning, the conversation at a table behind me caught my attention as it began moving in a politically angry direction.  We know lots of people are mad these days, and Christians can be among the maddest.  We tend to see our nation going to hell in a handbasket for any number of reasons – spiritually, morally, economically, politically – you name it.  Of course, throughout human history people have always believed the world was falling apart and getting worse, so it’s not a hard truth to sell.

What is more difficult and much harder than getting mad all the time is making the decision to do something to help remedy the situation.  When Solomon dedicated the temple, a great amount of work was invested to build it, but also a great amount was invested in worship, expressing his personal and Israel’s national sense of dependence before God.  After this, in 2 Chronicles 7: 11, the author says, “When Solomon had finished the temple... the LORD appeared to him at night.”  God was about to give the king special instructions so he would know what to do in the event of a national emergency, what to do instead of becoming mad or becoming frustrated.

National emergencies are not a new phenomena.  Every nation, every city, and every family has experienced those times when life has become too hard to handle.  America lived through the Civil War, the Great Depression, Pearl Harbor, the rebellious tumult of the 1960s and 70s.  So this passage really ought to be a significant assistance to any person, any family, any nation seeking help from God as they go through distress and live in pain.  It is because of the ministry of the Holy Spirit through this particular passage that many of us began to believe we are living in times that are spiritually very significant.

As we begin, notice that the difficulties mentioned in these verses are brought on by God.  Many of us think that there is no way God could ever be responsible for judgments such as these.  But God says, “When I shut up the heavens,” indicating that the drought, the locusts, and the plague are divinely ordered, and are not randomly or capriciously dropped out of the sky.

All this begs the question: do disasters always find their origin in God?  Aren’t there simply natural disasters that have no spiritual meaning at all?  Is it always God?  That’s a hard question, but I would respond this way: if you are thinking about some horrendous situation happening in America or somewhere in the world, and the Holy Spirit begins to prompt you to realize this means God is not pleased with the rebellious heart of man, and there are awful consequences for the sins of this world – then God is speaking to you through this event.  If you receive nothing at all like this, perhaps you are simply not listening!

You will recall Romans 8: 18 - 21, where Paul says all of creation is in bondage to decay and is subject to disasters as a sign of that decay.  There is decay throughout the created universe, because of the presence of sin, and as a consequence of the sin of humankind.  The storms that move through the atmosphere, the earthquakes that send shock waves to destroy cities, the cancers that rob people of their lives, all these are creation breaking down, “groaning as in the pains of childbirth.”

The wildfires that recently swept through Colorado, the tornadoes that devastated the south last year, the earthquake and  tsunami which destroyed so much of Japan, are all indicators of the falling-apart nature of this old world.  It is up to us, however, to rightly interpret these events, to recognize whether the voice of God is speaking in the midst of economic downturns, and in the midst of droughts and floods.  When plagues of sickness take thousands upon thousands of lives, when people you love find their faith in God crumbling, when our own children lose their faith for whatever reason, we want to be especially keen about hearing the heart of God and understanding what is happening.  In each and every meteorological, geological, or medical event, the voice of God is calling His people to repent.

God spoke to Haggai and through him told the people of God to give careful thought to their ways.  Think about how your lives are going wrong... how nothing you do prospers.  Think about that.  Think about the lack of God’s blessing on your life.  Is God speaking to you through this experience?

Consider what God might be saying to America when communities in Colorado burn to the ground, when something called a land hurricane strikes our Midwest, or when the economy of the greatest nation in the world lies dormant and unresponsive even to the persistent tickling of our government.

Are all these events merely natural, everyday occurrences, that have no meaning or significance beyond the events themselves?  No, not at all; these events are indicative of much more than a tantrum thrown by random and inanimate forces.  They are the consequence of fallen creation and fallen man, and are the result of man’s insistent and long-standing rebellion against God.  As disasters occur, this passage helps us to understand that by them, God is wooing us back to himself.  There is a way out, there is a solution, and the solution is found in our relationship with God.  The solution is found when we take ourselves seriously as “if My people.”

What characterizes, what is the common denominator for the kind of events God mentions here is devastation.  A drought means there is no water to sustain life.  Plants die; famine results.  Locust darken the sky as they swarm, and then eat every green leaf in sight, and famine results.  A plague is a disease that overtakes and kills large numbers of people, leaving nothing but weakness and destruction in its wake.  That is devastation, that is destruction and it is total and complete.  Devastation can be physical, as these examples attest.  Devastation can also cause widespread spiritual and emotional damage.  When we are devastated, it can create a sense of desperation in our hearts, a desperation defined as hunger for God unsatisfied by money or success, a thirst for His presence that is unquenched by any other substitute.  We know this is not always the case, as sometimes devastation causes cynicism and bitterness, but certainly the preferred response is hunger, thirst and desperation in the heart for God.

When devastation brings forth hunger for God in the hearts of people, and those people begin to express that desperation for God in their lives, you can know God is wooing His people back to Himself.  When a desire for the things of God begin to outweigh and outdistance our appetite for pleasure or for life-as-usual, that’s a sign this desperation is maturing.  That’s when you know God is wooing His people back to Himself.

That is also when God’s people begin to humble themselves.  Here God is not advocating sackcloth and ashes, self-flagellation, or self-mutilation.  God is inviting us to see ourselves accurately, Biblically, soberly, as we ought to see ourselves.  There comes a time when Christians understand everything we are and every possession we think we own is nothing less than God’s gift and all of it belongs first to Him.  That is easy to say and it is easy to nod our heads in sage agreement, but it is another thing to allow God the kind of access to our lives and access to our bank accounts that shows we are not lying when we say, Jesus is my Lord and my King.  Friends, we are neither self-made nor self-taught.  God has made us.  God has blessed us, and now it very well may be that God is breaking us.

Through the painful trials we endure, God is causing our hard shells to crack, weaken, soften, and yield to the gentle pressure of the Holy Spirit.  Do you know how to tell when Christians are beginning to soften and become responsive to God?  One indication is when Christians set aside time to pray together.  That is a really good sign of growing humility.  Slowly, we are seeing people from the churches on Cape Cod becoming more willing to step away from whatever they were doing, and be willing to yield enough to go to meet with other Christians, simply to humble ourselves and to join hearts in prayer.  Here in Pocasset, we are a long ways from being able to say we are experiencing success in that area, but it has begun in other churches.  Most of us have not yet begun to soften, or to yield to God, and our hard shells are still resilient and very strong.  But God says, when we Pocasset Baptists humble ourselves and seek His face that will be a sure sign God is working in the middle of our stuff and in the middle of our church.

I speak with people every week who say they pray all the time.  What they are probably doing is one of two things.  They are either engaging in spiritual self-talk, or they are bringing their shopping lists to God, saying, “God, please do this, and that, and this, and that.”  Seeking the face of God is far different from what these folks are doing.  Seeking God’s face is not stopping at Heaven’s super market... it is not asking for things; it’s enjoying His presence.  It is pure worship.  People who simply seek God are rare these days because we all want stuff and want God to do stuff for us.  People who seek God’s face simply want God.

God is not bound to answer the prayers of wicked people.  If there is a formula to have God answer your prayers, these verses probably comes as close to a formula as you will find anywhere in God’s Word.  Humble yourself.  Seek God’s face, and turn from any wickedness in your life.

That last condition is where the rubber meets the road for you and me.  Many of us believe we can repent and all will be well, but our repentance doesn’t include a change in behavior!  Plus, we all have a whole bunch of grey areas in our lives, areas that may bother us but we enjoy engaging in the behavior, so we make excuses about our participation.  When a believer is serious and not fooling around, those grey areas will disappear from their lives.

This whole statement which God made to Solomon is a conditional promise in the form of if/then.  If you do this, then God will do that.  Many of the promises of God are unconditional in nature and do not depend one bit on our response or our behavior.  We are saved by grace and not by works, so the love of God is completely unconditional, as are many of God’s promises, but not this promise.  What God will do here depends completely on how we respond.  If we turn from the behaviors and attitudes of our hearts that are displeasing to God, God will listen to our prayers.  He will forgive our sin.  He will heal our land.

That’s the word here which reaches into our hearts, that grabs us, and makes us take notice – the promise that God will hear, the promise that God will forgive, and the promise that God will heal.   It is not only our nation that needs healing, but our families need God’s touch as well.  We have relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children, brothers and sisters – strained, torn, and devastated by years of built-up resentments and bitterness.

When we see people who are wracked by the powerful pull of addiction, when some friends are falling into the depths of  depression, when other friends are seeing what little faith and hope they once had draining away – we become more than alarmed.  We become desperate for God to come by here and do the kind of redeeming and healing work only God can do.

So the question to you this morning is this: what are you willing to do, how much of your life are you willing to invest in approaching God on the basis of the promise described in these two verses?  Many of us have this committed these verses to memory, but are we ready to step up our game and do whatever is required to see God answer our prayers?  It is not kidding or exaggeration to say the fate of our nation lies in our hands.

The people in Haggai’s day were so busy with their own lives and so taken up in their own agenda that God had to speak directly to them, and say there were good reasons why they were not prospering or experiencing God’s blessing.  They had put all their attention and all their money into their own lives and into their own homes, all the while the things of God were allowed to rot and fall apart.  Solomon was told that when he became aware of God’s absence, when he realized disasters were striking close to home, he could remedy the situation by turning away from sin and turning to God.  It was a simple solution, and yet, three thousand years later, we are still struggling to find ourselves taking advantage of God’s promise.

Will you make a decision today to become part of the solution rather than griping, rather than complaining, rather than remaining part of the problem?  Will you humble yourself and find a way to pray together with others, to depend on God for real, and not just as something that sounds spiritual to say?  Will you seek God’s face, not for what you hope to get, but simply for the purpose of getting to know Him?  And will you allow the Holy Spirit to complete an inventory of your heart and life, and as a result, remove everything that is standing in the way of God from your life?

Praying James 5:10-11

Beginning with the month of May, we began praying The Book of James on the Ranger Joe’s God and Country Show .

James 5:10-11

10 As an example, brethren, of suffering and patience, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 We count those blessed who endured. You have heard of the endurance of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord’s dealings, that the Lord is full of compassion and is merciful.

Today's Prayer

Lord, thank You for the examples of saints who have suffered with patience. Thank You for the example of Job, and the outcome in his life that came from You. Forgive us Father, as a nation and as Your church, especially in the West, for thinking that when difficulties come our way we should NOT be experiencing them. Lord, cause us to thank You for them, for they are Your will for our life (1 Thessalonians 5:18) and cause us Lord to be very compassionate and merciful, just as You are with us. And cause us Lord to accept what You bring our way. In the Name of Your Son, who suffered with great patience, amen.

Psalm 119:49-56

Emphasis                 Your words are my songs

Today’s Prayer

Lord, Your words, wherever I am at in this tent, in this body, are my songs (Psalm 119:54). Lord, there is so much talk of singing in Your word, but in this nation, and in Your church, we fight over the type of music to be sung. Father forgive us for allowing those attitudes, and instead cause us to  sing of Your love, Your justice, praise to You (Psalm 101:1), Your ways and Your great glory (Psalm 138:5).

Letter to the Saints in Arabia

Dear brothers & sisters in the Arabian Peninsula,

I wish I could be there with you because I wish to share in some small way in the celebration and seeking aking place in the region.  While I have a deep burden for the land there and have spent myself for our cousins locally, I am not a leader of any work, but the least servant of all. Yet I venture to share a word that has been regularly bubbling up within my heart.  I have shared it with others and they have been encouraged, though puzzled at first, so I will put my head on the block and share it with you as well trusting that a gift will be imparted.

In Isaiah 21 there is a passage which I am sure is familiar to all of you:  Within exactly one year all the splendor of Kedar will come to an end.  Initially, the time of prayer for PTAP was set @ 1 year, then the leadership wisely took counsel and expanded this emphasis to an until … emphasis. It has been fruitful: churches have begun, boldness has increased, and governments are in transition. Humility is coming … but there are also elements that are opposed to the freedom we celebrate in God’s Gift.  As the prophecy says before that,  Here is a message about Dumah: (Which when translated means Silence) Someone calls to me from Seir, (at the north west part of Arabia.) “Watchman, what is left of the night? Watchman, what is left of the night?” The watchman replies, “Morning is coming, but then night. If you want to ask, ask; come back again.” Notice that morning is coming.  This is good news to us all.  God is prophesying about silence here and night is the time of silence. Morning is coming with all the air is alive with sound and waking.  When the vendors are selling and the birds are singing. Jesus himself may have ventured out to Seir at one point. Herod was from that area, and Jesus was reclaiming the lost sons of Abraham. Seir is Edom is Esau. Esau is from the seed of Abraham, though in terms of blessing he was silent, he cried to no avail. But we are not of the seed of Edom, but of Christ—not of the seed of flesh, but of the seed of faith.  What is this word then? What is the hope for those who want to see the pride of violence fall? We ask the Lord, we ask the watchman on the walls, even Jesus who guards our souls in the night: what is left of the night? “How much longer?” cried out the saints from under the altar, beneath the castle [qasr] walls & streets.  Here is the word of the Lord: Morning is coming!  Oh, we see the sun coming on the horizon! The Sun will rise with healing in His wings! The broken cisterns will be mended. The polluted wells will be redug.  The confused cities will be ordered in the way of the Lord. The sick will have a Holy Hospital. The dead will be raised to life again. Oh, but caution, night too is coming. With the sifting out & storing of the wheat, we know that the chaff and stubble will be burned.  The fields must be plowed up season after season. The prunings must be thrown into the fire. Night also is coming, after the morning and noon. Everyone who wants to live a life of godliness in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. Be alert & watchful … and pray.  Are you inclined at all to pray, then pray. Do you want to ask? Ask, and keep on asking. Then ask some more until the day dawns when there will be no more night and no more moon. For the Lord God Almighty will be the Light of that great City and the Lamb will be the lamp. The bride is being prepared to inherit in the Castle. She must be clean,  so let her anoint and cleanse herself with Castile Soap, by C.onfessing, A.doring, S.upplying our needs, T.hanking, I.nterceeding, L.istening, and E.during in prayer while S.eeking O.ut A.bundant P.romises. If we do, then we will find a fortress for our soul to be held holy within. And the gates of hell will not prevail as we go out in glad parade for the bride of Christ to come into the castle of His home.                https://net.bible.org/#!search/Isaiah 21:11-17

Kindly & calmly, your fellow saint and servant,

Praying Outside of God's Will

What happens when your prayer is not in sync with God’s will?  It matters little whether you are praying for recovery of relationship, removal of pain, or revival of spirit, if the prayer is outside of God’s will, the answer is different from the request. James wrote, “You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss” (James 4:3).  Did that ever happen in Scripture?  Sure it did.  A prime example would be Paul asking God to remove his thorn in the flesh (2 Corinthians 12:7-9).  The response was, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” How do we respond when our prayer has proven to be outside of God’s will? Some act like an immature child whose parent has said no to a request.  They whine, and cry, and fuss, and make threats, all to no avail. Nor is God a wishy-washy parent who can be manipulated with such actions.  Others become reclusive, pouting, and feeling sorry for themselves that they should be denied, again to no avail.  Nor is God one on whom a display of human emotions can necessarily bring about change. The most mature response is to join Paul, living in the sufficiency of God’s grace.  Meanwhile keep praying until you get it right.

Praying James 5:9

Beginning with the month of May, we began praying The Book of James on the Ranger Joe’s God and Country Show .

James 5:9

Do not complain, brethren, against one another, so that you yourselves may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing right at the door.

Today's Prayer

Oh Father, You have seen fit in this book, and even in this chapter, to address the issue of us judging others, more than once. Father, forgive us as a nation, and as Your church, for not heeding Your word. We judge, when in fact the Judge, You, is standing at the door. Father, cause us to love unconditionally, without our needing to judge. In the Name of Your Son, who will judge us all, amen.

Psalm 119:41-48

Emphasis                 There is Liberty in Your word

Today’s Prayer

Father, we cry aloud for liberty in our country. We think we have liberty in our churches. We look for liberty in our relationships, but Lord, the only true liberty is in Your precepts (Psalm 119:45). Lord we have many teachers that are like the prophets of old who would dress needs, wounds, mortal wounds, as if they were not serious, saying “Peace, peace!” when there is no peace (Jeremiah 6:14). Father, forgive us for desiring that “liberty” that comes from hearing what our itching ears want to hear (2 Timothy 4:3). We know this only leads to guides, to teachers who mislead us (Isaiah 9:16) and blind guides that lead us into pits, Oh Father, give us liberty by giving us the grace to turn from them, these blind guides (Matthew 15:14).

Foul Play

The enemy plays unfair. He tempts you with a thought, and then condemns you for having it! I’ve been the target of that cruel strategy far too often—as most of us probably have. We know that God says, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” But somehow it’s seems easier to believe Satan’s accusation, “You are nothing but a sinner. Always have been always will be. You’ll never change, you’ll never overcome your sin. So why bother trying?”

When Satan goes after me like that, even if I don’t actually give in to the temptation, I usually spiral into a slump of defeat and disgrace. I feel so much shame that I can barely eke out much more of a prayer than, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.” If I’m not very careful, I can get stuck there.

However, contrary to what the deceiver tries to convince us of, temptation does not equal sin. Tempting thoughts do not equal sinful actions. They can lead there, obviously, but temptation on its own is not sin. So I am getting pretty fed up with the enemy raking God’s children over the coals for being tempted.

But here’s the thing: if it were up to us to overcome sin and temptation, we could never do it. The enemy’s temptations are powerful and cunning. He’s both smarter and stronger than we are. So when he says that we will never change (and a thousand variations on that theme), in a sense, he’s right. We won’t—certainly not on our own feeble steam. However, and this is a huge however—it is Christ’s resurrection power at work in us that transforms us. And it is Jesus’ blood that delivers us. We do not save ourselves, we do not heal ourselves, we do not change ourselves—God does it all.

Today, the Holy Spirit directed me to some Scriptures that I can take up as my shield of faith whenever the enemy lobs his arrows at me. They all have the same theme—it is God in me that does the work, not me. I belong to Him, He is invested in me, and He will not let me fall to the evil one. Here they are:

  • "The Lord will fulfill [his purpose] for me; your love, O Lord, endures forever--do not abandon the works of your hands" (Psalm 138:8).
  • "He will keep you strong to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 1:8).
  • " I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns" (Philippians 1:6).
  • "For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him” (Philippians 2:13).

These verses help me to believe that when the enemy goes at me with those below-the-belt accusations, I don’t have to prove or justify anything. I don’t have to show him how much progress I’ve made in sanctification. Instead, I can stand up to him on the basis of what God’s Word. I can remind myself—and him—that I’m counting on God to do for me what He says He will do.

What Scriptures do you pray and use when the enemy tries to take you out?

Psalm 119:33-40

Emphasis                 You incline my heart

Today’s Prayer

Lord, this emphasis reminds me that there is such a dependence upon You. And Lord, even as I put Your instructions into practice (Psalm 119:34) I trust You to incline my heart to Your testimonies, and to turn my eyes from worthless things (Psalm 119:37). Lord forgive us as a nation, and members of Your body, the church, because we have forsaken Your word which You set before us. We have not obeyed or followed it (Jeremiah 9:13). Forgive us Lord and cause us to abandon our shameful ways by following Your word (Psalm 119:39).

Praying James 5:7-8

Beginning with the month of May, we began praying The Book of James on the Ranger Joe’s God and Country Show .

James 5:7-8

7Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains. 8You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.

Today's Prayer

Father, we are so grateful that the coming of Your Son is near, but often Lord, we are impatient. Lord forgive us, as a nation and as Your church, for worrying, rather than having the patience of a farmer. Lord we know that You are the one who brings precious fruit, both out of the ground, and out of our lives, when we but wait upon You. Cause our hearts to be strengthened Lord, as Your Son's return draws near. In His name, the name of the One whose coming is soon, amen.

A Call for the Church to Wake Up

Last week this blog was about the locusts of the book Joel returning.  This time we will be looking at a church that is so asleep that they don’t even know it.  Today we will be looking at the next part of the first chapter of Joel.  In these 3 verses we will look at why the church in Israel and the west have fallen asleep.

The church is the one entity that should be alert to the happenings around them.  In the last essay you read that the church have been too unaware and missed the signs of the locusts.  Today you will see some reasons why the church has chosen to slumber.

Symbols of Slumber

In verse 15 Joel says for the drunkards to wake up and weep.  He goes on to say to the wine bibbers to wail because the wine has been taken away from their lips.  They had been so caught up in their habits that they were blindsided by the locusts and the message they were giving.

Alcohol dulls the senses and those who drink too much lose their inhabitations.  They do things they would not normally do.  In our world, Christians have had their senses dulled by the world.  We have bought into the idea that we need to have the next best and newest thing.  It could be that 72” big screen TV, the bigger car, house, latest technology, etc.   These all go toward a dulling of our spiritual senses.  These things in of themselves are not evil.  When they, however, take a lot of time in the planning and acquiring of them, it takes away from developing any spiritual depth.  The average Christian spends about 5 minutes a week in reading the Word and virtually zero time in being intimate with God in prayer.

Without a prophetic intent at all, it is easy to see that we in the church have indeed fallen asleep.  We are not aware that the enemy has invaded us and is in the process of destroying us.  If you have any doubts about that, ask yourself how fast the church growing.   The church is actually declining.  We are not even keeping up with the rate of population growth.  Why - because we have fallen for the lie of the evil one that the dream for more is our dream.  So let me ask you to put aside your dullness and wake up to the reality that we in Christ are not making much difference.  (I know, some of you will say, but I know people who are – but as a whole we aren’t.  We are called to be a holy priesthood, but many are drunk on the wine of self-indulgence.)

In the 16th verse of Joel 1 it tells us that we have fallen into drowsiness because we have missed the invasion of the locusts that was without number.  He uses the symbol of the teeth of a lion and the fangs of a lioness to demonstrate his point.  The message here is that the followers of YHWH had been so preoccupied by their own self-absorption that they were shredded spiritually and didn’t even know it.  He was telling them that they were taking a nap when the horrible stuff happened in their country.  The reason, they had started to worship themselves or any god that seemed convenient at the time.

In the western church we are not only taking a nap but are snoring in our slumber.  Recently a test was given to a group of 5th and 6th graders that was based on a test the Puritans gave to their children of the same age.  The Puritan children had to get 26 out the 30 questions correct in order to go on to the next grade.  These weren’t really tough questions, just basic Bible knowledge.  The highest score was 12 which were below the minimal standard.  When given to their parents, the results were the similar.  Point: In the west we do not know the Word of God.  We are Biblically illiterate.  Barna says that we are the most Biblically illiterate generation in history.

Key question: How in the world can the church claim to follow the Trinity when we don’t even know Him in more than a cursory way?

In the 17th verse Joel tells the people that the vines are wasted and the fig trees are ruined.  As a matter of fact every living thing has had its bark stripped so bare that the branches are white.  The people were devastated and depressed.  They couldn’t see any way out of the mess.

We in the western church are slowly be stripped white of our selfish ways by the suffering and persecuted third world church.  Southern Sudan has had its 1 year anniversary as a country.  The primary reason they split from the north is so that they could worship God Almighty.  North Sudan has responded by bombing the people consistently and killing 100’s of them.  Many of them have to live in the mountains eating bark and leaves.  Yet what is happening?  The church of Jesus Christ grows.  They aren’t depressed.  They are hungry, but they have a great faith in Jesus Christ who says that if the Son sets you free that you are free indeed.  Not free to do what you want to do, but free to worship Him with every fiber of your being.

I have only one message to all my rowdy believing friends: Let’s get more intimate with the Creator of the universe and see what it is that He would have us do.

Next Time:  Solutions for our Slumber

SYRIA: CHRISTIANS' PLIGHT LOST UNDER MOUNTAIN OF PROPAGANDA

by Elizabeth Kendal

Without a doubt, the greatest lie being told about the Syrian conflict is that it is being waged by President Assad against 'the Syrian people'. This is pure propaganda. In December 2011, just three months into the crisis, the Qatar Foundation conducted a major poll inside Syria to assess the level of support for Assad. (This was before al-Qaeda and other international Salafi jihadists started flooding in, making the crisis worse.) As an advocate of regime change in Syria, Qatar was embarrassed by the results and so buried them. When eventually leaked, the results revealed that 55 percent of Syrians supported President Assad and 68 percent of Syrians disapproved of Arab League sanctions. This makes perfect sense, considering that religious minorities make up 25 percent of Syria's population (Christians are 10 percent) and at least one-third of all Sunni Muslims would be nominal or secular urbanites who likewise do not want to live in an Islamic State. So the main division in Syria is not between Assad and the rest, but between Sunni fundamentalists (including foreign Salafi jihadists) and the rest, i.e. the majority of Syrians.

This is asymmetric warfare: a battle between two unequal forces. The jihadists who quickly hijacked the original protest movement are no match for the Syrian military. Consequently this battle would have been over long ago except that forces keen to counter the Iranian-Shi'ite ascendancy by means of regime change in Syria are arming, training and funding the jihadists. These forces are the US - Saudi Arabia - Gulf Arab axis plus neo-Ottoman Turkey. As noted by Robert D Kaplan and Kamran Bokhari (Stratfor Intelligence), Assad's removal will doubtless hasten Syria's (and Lebanon's) slide into chaos, not slow it. Despite what the US - Saudi - Gulf Arab axis says, this is exactly what it intends with the aim of crippling or at least tying up Iran's allies - the Syrian Army and Hezballah - ahead of a military strike on Iran. The US seems to have no long-term perspective and nobody seems to care about the plight of millions of Middle Eastern Christians.

Propaganda is critical in asymmetric warfare. The weaker force (the jihadists) cannot win on their own and need to have a power stronger than the other side intervene on their behalf. To secure a 'humanitarian intervention' the weaker force will inflate and falsify civilian casualty figures and even create civilian casualties through the use of human shields and 'false flag' operations. ['False flag' operations are those in which the terrorists are disguised as elements of the other side.] The Houla massacre has since been proved to be a 'false flag' operation, committed by Free Syrian Army forces claiming to be pro-government 'thugs'. The dead families were pro-government, mostly non-Sunni, civilians. US-NATO will not intervene militarily as they did when they bombed Belgrade in 1999 and Tripoli in 2011 - two cities full of civilians - unless and until they can make a military intervention palatable to voters back home. Hence the US administration's peddling of jihadist propaganda! But the US must find another way to contain or engage Iran, for their present strategy necessitates the totally unacceptable sacrifice of millions of Middle Eastern Christians.

According to church sources inside Syria, Christians are increasingly being targeted and driven out of their homes and districts. Some 138,000 Christians have fled Homs, where Christians have been terrorised and churches have been looted and occupied by rebel forces. At least 9,000 Christians fled the neighbouring western city of Qusayr after the leaders of a rebel faction issued an ultimatum that was repeated from mosque minarets. In areas under rebel control, intolerant, hard-line Sunni fundamentalism is making Muslim-Christian coexistence impossible. For the jihadists, neutrality is not an option, and Christians (and Muslims) refusing to support the jihad are being tortured, expelled and murdered. In a fatwa, Sunni cleric Adnan Arour warned Syrian loyalists: 'We will chop you up and feed you to the dogs.'

PLEASE PRAY SPECIFICALLY THAT GOD WILL -

* redeem this crisis to build up the Church both in numbers - as people come to faith - and in faithfulness - as believers learn to look to and trust the LORD of hosts. 'In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.' (from Isaiah 30:15 ESV)

* stretch out his arm to guide Christians fleeing jihad and terror, leading them where to go, shielding them under his hand, providing all their needs and fending off those who would harm them.

* turn the hearts of US-NATO leaders who are supporting the jihadists; may they turn from this strategy - give up on it, find another way - and put human life before economic and geo-strategic gain; may they become a force for peace, not death. 'The king's heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he will.' (Proverbs 21:1 ESV)

CHRISTIANS' PLIGHT IN SYRIA LOST UNDER MOUNTAIN OF PROPAGANDA

Syria's Christians are being targeted and forced from their homes. Terror has driven some 138,000 Christians out of Homs and at least 9,000 Christians out of the neighbouring western city of Qusayr where an ultimatum was announced from mosque minarets. For the jihadists, neutrality is not an option: Christians (and Muslims) refusing to support the jihad are being tortured, expelled and murdered. In a fatwa, Sunni cleric Adnan Arour warned Syrian loyalists: 'We will chop you up and feed you to the dogs.' The plight of Christians is being buried under a mountain of propaganda from the jihadists and the US - Saudi - Gulf Arab axis, which is seeking to hurt Iran through regime change in Syria. Please pray for Christians in Syria, including thousands of Assyrian-Chaldean refugees from Iraq.

Nehemiah: A Model For Prayer AND Action

As most of us know Nehemiah was called by God to rebuild the wall around Jerusalem following the Babylonian captivity. Unfortunately, not everyone liked the idea, particularly several key leaders. In chapter 4, verse 1, we read, When Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he became angry and was greatly incensed. He ridiculed the Jews . . .

Tobiah also joined the verbal scourging and added, What are they building - if even a fox climbed up on it, he would break down their wall of stones!

However, Nehemiah being a wise and godly leader immediately turned to the Lord and prayed in verse 4, Hear us, O our God, for we are despised. Turn their insults back on their own heads. Give them over as plunder in a land of captivity.

But then rather than praying more he and his team went to work. So we rebuilt the wall till all of it reached half its height, for the people worked with all their heart. (v. 6)

Unfortunately, Sanballat, Tobiah and a host more were not finished and became angry that the work continued. Verse 8 tells us, They plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and stir up trouble against it.

I find Nehemiah's next actions even more insightful when we think about how we're to pray in the middle of trials. But we prayed to our God and posted a guard day and night to meet this threat.

They prayed AND posted a guard. They sought God's help AND they used everyday wisdom. They were spiritual AND they were smart.

God expects us to do the same today. Yes, pray for healing AND find the best medical help you can find. Yes, pray for financial provision AND spend what you have well. Yes, pray for your children to become godly AND model a Christlike life in front of them. Pray for the needy AND go share what you have with them. The possible implications are myriad.

Prayer and action are clearly not mutually exclusive!

But so often we prayer leaders, pastors and teachers send messages to others that one or the other, prayer or action, is really enough. We call for great movements of prayer (and we should) but we often leave out a challenge to then act wisely and assertively. Others pull together hundreds or even thousands to serve others and take little time to pray for wisdom, direction and guidance.

And many of us know the hurt and misunderstanding many have faced because a Christian leader did not understand the Bible's clear perspective that prayer is to be coupled with wisdom and everyday deeds.

When Jesus taught his disciples to pray He told them to pray that God would enable and empower them to bring the kingdom to earth as it is in Heaven. He too wanted them to make the kingdom real and vibrant in very tangible ways.

So, are you facing a challenge, a rebuttal, a push back on something you believe God wants you or your church to do?  Yes, pray like crazy, call others to join you, ask in Jesus' name that the Father will be glorified, fast if you feel led to, but for Heaven's sake, post a guard!

Psalm 119:25-32

Emphasis                 You remove false ways from me

Today’s Prayer

Father, Your word tells us that the whole world is under the control of the evil one (John 8:44). Thank You for Your Holy Spirit who teaches us, speaks to us, and reminds us of the things that Your Son has said (John 14:26, 16:13). Lord, we know that satan often comes as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14), and that we, in this nation and in Your church, have fallen for his deceptions. Lord, we need You to remove his false ways, his deception from us by graciously giving us the knowledge and understanding of Your word (Psalm 119:29).

Praying James 5:1-6

Beginning with the month of May, we began praying The Book of James on the Ranger Joe’s God and Country Show .

Please note that these prayers are NOT A DIATRIBE AGAINST our government
It is a wake-up call to the Christians of the sin in OUR LIFE!

I believe the problems we are experiencing are the USA are the result of
God judging US, Christians, NOT the non-Christians!

Their time will come...these problems are on us,
which means we need to repent!

Like Greg Frizzell likes to say, the problem isn't that we need more pray-ers.
The problem is in us, the pray-ers.

James 5:1-6

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries which are coming upon you. Your riches have rotted and your garments have become moth-eaten. Your gold and your silver have rusted; and their rust will be a witness against you and will consume your flesh like fire. It is in the last days that you have stored up your treasure! Behold, the pay of the laborers who mowed your fields, and which has been withheld by you, cries out against you; and the outcry of those who did the harvesting has reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. You have lived luxuriously on the earth and led a life of wanton pleasure; you have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. You have condemned and put to death the righteous man; he does not resist you.

Today's Prayer

Oh Lord, whether we are rich or not, we can let wealth ruin us. Lord, when our only fruit is corrosion in our lives, our life and our flesh is a witness against us. Thank You Lord that Your ears hear the cries of the ones we harm by our actions. Forgive us Father, as a nation and as Your church, for fattening our hearts, when our hearts are deceptively wicked, and the reality is that no one can know them, our heart (Jeremiah 17:9). Lord, cause us to weep and wail over miseries that are coming to us, as a nation and as Your church. In the Name of Your Son, the One who saves us in the midst of our trials, amen.

Take time to Relax

Resently I went to a Missions conference in Baltimore Maryland and one of the messages really was a blessing to me. The title was "are you in a slump" I was so tired out from being so busy for the Lord that I wasn't able to enjoy being with him just relaxing in His presence. Now I have decided to take the time off to relax and enjoy the life that Christ has made possible for me to live... To live is Christ!!Nellie King
