WITHOUT CEASING

Scripture commands us to pray continually. What does that mean? I have heard preachers say, (I have said this myself.) "This means we are to maintain an attitude of prayer.” But I do not think that is a practical way of thinking about prayer. Prayer is communication with God. It is asking Him for something or thanking Him, confessing sin or lavishing praise on His Name. It may even be listening to His still small voice. But it is always more than an attitude.

I recommend an exercise that helps us pray continually. Driving is one of those times when you cannot pray in your closet. I have been suggesting to people that they start trying to pray for the driver and passengers in every other car you meet on the road. This is a good beginning toward praying silently for everyone you see in the grocery store, the bank or at church.

  • In the case of praying in traffic or in the store, people often want to know what to pray for people you do not know. I have a couple of aids or short lists of things to pray for people in that case. One I got from Houses Of Prayer Everywhere. The other I came up with myself. But I do not recommend them. I suggest that people simply ask God to show them what to pray, and pray whatever comes to mind.

  • That is great, Rob!

I like to do that as well. I usually ask people, "Would it make you uncomfortable if I prayed for you. I cannot remember when someone did not allow me to pray. I try not to do it in front of others. Today, I said to a barista, "I did not ask you how I could pray for you." It did embarrass her, and she did not know what to say. But it also seemed to touch her. I told her I would lift her up without knowing what to say.

  • David,

This is a great encouragement to practically live out prayer unceasingly in all times and places!  I'd like to hear from you, or others, who place the recommendation into practice- to see how the Lord grows and challenges their faith and confidence in prayer.

Something I've begun challenging people around me to be in prayer about- as they're out an about, is to seek the Holy Spirit to quicken their hearts to ask others if they can pray with them (in the grocery store, post office, etc.) as they're out and about.  It will challenge many, but for those who do so, it will likely bring added encouragement to both the person they pray for/with as well as themselves!  Everyone in the world desires to be prayed for (whether they indicate so in the moment or not).  Investing a little extra time during one's day to invest prayer in someone else's life could be life-changing (and potentially eternity-changing for some as well)!

Just an idea I wanted to add to what you shared.  Keep sharing!

    Rob
