Pray with Thanksgiving - Connection! (Devotions for Every Day Life)

Pray with Thanksgiving

Posted: 18 Nov 2010 01:00 AM PST

“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:18).

It’s hard for us to thank God while making our requests, for two reasons. First, because we are so focused on the need, we often wrestle with anxiety. Secondly, we typically thank someone after they’ve done something, not before. When it comes to effective prayer, thanksgiving is to both precede and follow God’s response.

Thanking God in advance for doing what you’re asking Him to do is an expression of your expectancy. It’s evidence that you’re anticipating measurable results from your prayer. When my wife Alice was pregnant with our children, we said, “She is expecting.” When you are praying in faith with pre-thanksgiving, you are praying expectantly. You expect to see God answer your prayer in an observable, verifiable way.

Our faith and thanksgiving are not based on what we see. They are based upon God’s character (who He is, what He’s done in the past, and what He’s promised to do in the future). We’re to walk by faith, not by sight.

–Adapted from Giving Ourselves to Prayer: An Acts 6:4 Primer for Ministry (Chapter 39, The Secret of Single-Minded Prayer by Eddie Smith). Click on the title for more information about this resource.

Lord Jesus, there are days when my ungrateful heart needs to be lifted to a higher level of faith and expectancy. Teach me to be filled with grateful anticipation as I await Your response to prayers that are filled with faith! Thank You for showing me how to line up my prayers with the Father, as You did when You walked on this earth! May I have a heart that is filled with gratitude that the God of the Universe cares for me, and desires to use me to accomplish His plans in this lost and hurting world.

Prayer Points
Praise God for the good gifts he gives to those who ask him (Mt. 7:11). Give thanks, even in the midst of pain all around, that God’s gifts are good. Confess your lack of quality time spent with God in prayer (Rom. 8:26). Commit yourself to modeling Jesus’ example of praying in solitary places (Mk. 1:35). Ask God to give you a real devotion to prayer—being watchful and thankful, making the most of every opportunity (Col. 4:2-5).

Ask God to use emergency or crisis situations in the lives of unsaved people to bring them to the foot of the cross. Pray for eyes to see how you can help in such situations.

Prayer Pointer
“One of the most common weaknesses of our prayer lives is the vagueness of our focus. . . . Petition saves us from that. It forces us to be specific, to be precise, to clarify our wants and desires.” —Maxie Dunnam

Pray For Unction In The Pulpit
By Leonard Ravenhill

It requires neither top bracket intelligence nor yet super-spirituality to curse the darkness. It does require God-fashioned, God-filled and God-fired men to bring revival! We need some lion-hearted, wise-as-a-serpent prophets, Spirit-unctionized, Spirit-actioned, Spirit-directed and Spirit-operated men for the dying moments of this dispensation.

The church is living on borrowed capital. She has to get out the family album to show us Wesley and Huss, covenanters and confessors to help us whistle to keep up our courage. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

If the Bible said pay without ceasing we would be very near revival. The church is swept at this moment with a dollar fever, but the fingers of finance are impotent to relieve the impasse we are in. There IS a way out, only one, a well-tried one, a never failing one; it is the way of prayer!

The offense of prayer is that it does not essentially tie in to mental efficiency. That is not to say that prayer is a partner to mental sloth. But in these days – or should it be daze? – efficiency and smartness are at a premium. Prayer pertains to one thing alone, and that is to spirituality.

One does not need to be spiritual to preach, that is, to make and deliver sermons of homiletical perfection and exegetical exactitude. By a combination of memory, knowledge, ambition, personality, plus well-lined book shelves, self-confidence and a sense of having arrived, brother, the pulpit is yours almost anywhere now.

Preaching, of this type, affects men. Prayer affects God. Preaching affects time, prayer affects eternity. The pulpit can be a shop window to display our talents. The prayer closet speaks death to display.

The tragedy of this later hour is that we have too many dead men in the pulpits giving out too many dead sermons to too many dead people.

Preacher Brother! In All Thy Getting – Get Unction!

There is a strange thing I have observed even in fundamental circles. It is preaching without unction. Preaching without unction kills, instead of giving life. The word does not burn unless unction is upon the preacher.

Preaching is a spiritual business. A sermon born in the head reaches the head. A sermon born in the heart reaches the heart. A spiritual preacher will under God produce spiritually-minded people. Unction is not a gentle dove beating her wings outside the bars of the preacher’s soul; rather, divine unction must be pursued and won.

Unction Is God’s Knighthood for His Soldier-Preacher

Unction cannot be learned, only earned by prayer. Unction is God’s knighthood for the soldier-preacher who has wrestled in prayer and gained the victory. Victory is not won in the pulpit by firing intellectual bullets or wisecracks but in the prayer closet. The meeting is won or lost before the preacher’s foot enters the pulpit.

Unction comes not by a bishop’s ordination, neither does it mildew when the preacher is cast into prison. Unction will pierce and percolate, it will sweeten and soften. When the hammer of logic and the fire of human zeal fail to open the stony heart, unction will succeed.

Without unctionized preachers church altars will never see anxious penitents. Supposing that we saw fishing boats with the latest in radar equipment and fishing gear launched month after month and then put out to sea only to return without a catch, what excuse would we take for this barrenness?

Yet thousands of churches see empty altars week after week and year after year and cover this sterile situation by misapplying the Scripture "My Word...shall not return unto Me void" (Isa. 55:11).

The ugly fact is that the altar fires are either out, or burning very low. The prayer meeting is dead or dying. By our attitude to prayer we tell God that what was begun in the Spirit we can finish in the flesh. What church ever asks its candidating ministers what time they spend in prayer? Ministers who do not spend significant time each day in prayer are not worth a dime a dozen, degrees or no degrees.

Who now "earnestly contends for the faith once delivered to the saints"? (Jude v. 3). Where is there unction in the pulpit? Preachers who should be fishing for men are now too often fishing for compliments from men. Preachers used to sow seed. Now they string intellectual pearls. Imagine a field sown with pearls!

Born in a Tomb Instead of a Womb

Away with this palsied, puerile, powerless preaching which is unmoving because it was born in a tomb instead of a womb, and nourished in a fireless, prayerless soul. We may preach and perish, but we cannot pray and perish. If God called us to the ministry, dear brethren, then I contend that we should be unctionized. With all thy getting, get unction, lest barren altars be the badge of our unctionless intellectualism.

The old masters of the pulpit got their texts on their knees, soaked them with their tears, groaned over them with a travailing spirit, warmed them with strivings in prayer – then delivered the message as a living thing, warm from God’s heart, burning in the preacher’s heart to make warm the heart of the listeners. There is no substitute for prayer. We cannot tell this highbrow generation with science-soaked intellects what our God can do. We must demonstrate the Gospel!

A praying church is a womb; a prayerless church is a tomb. A prayerless pastor is a successful failure. Revival is God’s will. The churches’ greatest need and the world’s only hope, apart from the return of our Lord is revival.

Revival can neither be taught nor bought. The Bible reveals the method. The church supplies the men. Holy Ghost intercession supplies the channel through which it comes. The delay in revival is not from God’s side. "He is able," but we are deficient, the Spirit is limited in us – "according to the power that worketh in us" (Eph. 3:20). Unless the power is in, it cannot work out. "Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed?" (Acts 19:2).

Praying Men Can Make A DifferencePrintE-mail

by Dave Butts

Most church prayer ministry teams are predominately female. There’s a reason for this. In most situations, women pray more than men. C. Peter Wagner notes that of those who have been identified as being primarily intercessors, about 80% are female. Consider why this is so, remembering that we are dealing in generalities here. Women are typically more compassionate than men, which naturally leads them into praying for others.

Again, generally speaking, women are more spiritually sensitive than men. This awareness that something is happening spiritually brings about prayer. Certainly in many, if not most churches, they have had the example of praying women set before them. Women go to the prayer meeting while the men go work on the building. Stereotype? Yes…but all too often very close to the truth.

What God has perhaps allowed in the past is no longer permitted today. God is calling men to step up to the plate and do their part in prayer. The Lord today is calling ALL of the Church to prayer….both men and women, young and old. Look just at the spiritual warfare aspect of prayer. John Piper writes, "Until we know that life is war, we won’t know what prayer is for." Prayer involves battle against spiritual forces in the heavenlies. Men —how do you feel about sending your mother or wife out to do battle while you sit at home? Isn’t that what we’ve been doing when we have looked at prayer as women’s work? It’s time to take the place of the warrior, alongside the women, as we do battle together in the Lord’s strength and victory as a people of prayer.

Consider also the issue of spiritual leadership in the home. It’s very apparent in Scripture that the Lord expects Christian men to be the spiritual leaders of their homes. Here is a truth though, that is not always understood: spiritual leaders pray! If a man is not praying, he is not a spiritual leader. Prayerless men have abdicated their place of spiritual authority and left their families open to attack. You see, this is not an abstract discussion, but a matter of very practical issues for you and your family.

I believe the place for married men to begin is to develop the habit of praying with their wives. Most Christian men do not do this. Several years ago, Leadership Journal shared how most pastors don’t pray with their wives either. There are always excuses why we don’t, but they remain mere excuses. Couples that pray together are forging strong bonds that will not easily break. A survey was taken that noted just 1 in over a thousand couples who prayed together saw their marriage fall apart. Match that up against the close to 50% figure for all other couples, including Christians.

When my wife, Kim, and I were first married, we made a commitment to pray together. We found that there never seemed to be just the right time of day to do this. We finally decided the only way it was going to work for us was to get up a half an hour earlier in the morning. Our prayer time is precious to us. I hear from Kim about the things that are important to her by just listening to her prayers. She hears me praying over her day and asking God to bless her, as I also hear her pray for me. It is a wonderful time of sharing together before the Lord, and strengthening one another.

There are some days we don’t pray together. The schedule is out of the ordinary, or we’re on a trip, or one of us is especially tired. That’s ok. It’s not a legalistic requirement that we never miss a day of prayer together. Don’t put yourself under condemnation. Praying together is a great gift to give one another. Whether it is in the morning or evening, for 5 minutes, or for an hour, it is vital for Christian couples to learn to pray together.

I believe that God is calling men to lead out in prayer as part of His strategy for retaking planet earth. As men begin to respond in prayer, God begins to move in amazing ways. Dr J. Edwin Orr said it this way, "When God gets ready to do something new with his people, He always sets them praying."

God is doing a new thing today. If you want to be "in" on what God is doing, you must begin praying with greater passion and intensity. If you want purpose and meaning to life, and if you want your life to really count for God and to make a difference in this world…PRAY! Prayer is what God is calling His people to do today as a part of His plan for this world.

God is moving all things toward completion. I don’t pretend to know when. But I do know the key. It is evangelism. And the key to evangelism is prayer. Let me show this to you scripturally.

Jesus said, "And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all nations, and then the end will come" (Matthew 24:14). The gospel is going to be preached to all nations…Jesus said so. Do you want to be a part of the fulfillment of these words?

Jesus ties together prayer and evangelism in Matthew 9:37-38: "The harvest is truly plentiful but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the Harvest to send out laborers into His harvest." Then, in 1 Timothy chapter 2, Paul urges prayers to be lifted up because God wants everyone saved. Again prayer and evangelism are brought together.

There are two passages of Scripture in Revelation that you may not have noticed before that are exciting in their presentation of prayer and evangelism: "Each one has a harp and they are holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints" (Revelation 5:8). "Another angel, who had a golden censor, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all the saints, on the golden altar before the throne. The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of the saints, went up before God from the angel’s hand" (Revelation 8:3-4).

After each of these incidents, in which the collected prayers of God’s people are poured out before God, angels are loosed upon the earth to cause events intended to bring people to repentance and salvation. God uses the prayers of His people to bring about the establishment of Christ’s Kingdom.

The second passage in Revelation comes in the midst of a half an hour of silence. Author Walter Wink explains the connection well: "Heaven itself falls silent. The heavenly hosts and celestial spheres suspend their ceaseless singing so that the prayers of the saints on earth can be heard. The seven angels of destiny cannot blow the signal of the next times to be until an eighth angel gathers these prayers…and mingles them with incense upon the altar. Silently they rise to the nostrils of God.

"Human beings have intervened in the heavenly liturgy. The uninterrupted flow of consequences is damned for a moment. New alternatives become feasible. The unexpected becomes suddenly possible, because God’s people on earth have invoked heaven, the home of the possibles, and have been heard. What happens next, happens because people prayed. The message is clear: history belongs to the intercessors."

Dick Eastman, of Every Home for Christ, said it this way: "God’s ultimate purpose for mankind, the completion of Christ’s bride and the establishing of His eternal Kingdom on earth will result only from the release of the prayers of God’s saints."

Graham Kendrick and Chris Robinson wrote the hymn, All Heaven Waits. See if their words call to your heart and stir within you a passion to be a man of prayer

"All heaven waits with bated breath for saints on earth to pray,
Majestic angels ready stand with swords of fiery blade.
Astounding power awaits a word from God’s resplendent throne.
But God awaits our prayer of faith that cries, "Your will be done!"

Praying Big

Praying Big

For the last seven years, I've served as chairman of the National Prayer Committee here in the United States. I have a real burden to pray for our nation, and as I look at our nation, I see a desperate need for revival.

But as I travel across the country, I sadly have to admit that I'm not hearing the kind of praying that will produce revival. I don't hear bold praying. Instead, I hear "wimpy" praying.

Do you know what I mean? "Well, God, I've got an idea, and I'm not sure if You're interested, but if You are, here it is. Now do whatever You want."

This kind of prayer comes out of our mouths, dribbles down our chins, and falls on the floor. There's nothing that causes it to rise to heaven. There's no power there, no confidence, no faith.

The Bible teaches us to pray differently. In fact, God's Word commands us to pray boldly, to pray with confidence: "Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need" (Hebrews 4:16, emphasis added).

A TRAGIC PICTURE

The apostle John gives us a picture of the beauty and majesty of the throne room in the book of Revelation. Around the thrones of the Father and the Son are four living creatures—angelic beings whose sole task throughout all of eternity is simply to cry out, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty" (4:6-8). And around these four living creatures are twenty-four elders with crowns of gold, and they're continually taking their crowns and casting them at the feet of the Lord and worshiping Him (vv. 9-11).

As if that were not enough, John says the throne room of heaven is filled with many thousands of angels who are gathered together in joyful assembly (5:11-12). What an awe-inspiring place!

But in my imagination, at the back of the great throne room is a little door. When we begin to pray, the door opens, and we walk out into the very center of the throne room. And then we intone, "Dear heavenly Father, we thank You for all You've given us. Lead, guide and protect us. In Jesus' name, amen."

As we leave, you can hear the angels saying, "That's it? That's all he's going to ask for? He had the attention of the Creator of all things, and he closed his eyes, muttered a few little phrases ... and left?!"

With this picture in mind, the pressing question for the church today is, "How can we move from wimpy to bold praying?"

HOW TO PRAY BIG

There's a group of Christians whose story is found in the book of Acts who, I believe, give us a very practical model for how we can learn to pray with boldness. Their story is found in Acts 4, and providentially we have a transcript of their prayer meeting:

The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. They seized Peter and John, and because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day....

Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.... After further threats they let them go.

On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. "Sovereign Lord," they said, "you made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and everything in them....

"Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness...."

After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

Wow! I want us to look at their prayer, because there are several principles here for bold praying:

They paid attention to Who they were talking to. Sometimes we have a tendency in prayer to rush into God's presence with our prayer list, but we don't consider Who's on other end of the conversation. But look how they began this prayer: "Sovereign Lord, you made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and everything in them" (v. 24).

Here's an extremely important principle: When the focus of prayer is our needs, faith fades.

That's one reason we so often find ourselves scared and timid in prayer. For example, we find out that we've lost our job or we have cancer or a loved one is dying, and suddenly we're overwhelmed by fears and concerns and anxieties. We bring these concerns to the Lord, but we're not really focusing on the Lord—we're looking at our need!

These early Christians were able to pray this amazingly bold, effective prayer because they began by paying attention to Who they were talking to. Their focus was on the power and promises of God, not the serious predicament they were facing. This simple change of focus can change your prayer life forever.

They prayed according
to the Word of God. The disciples began their prayer by quoting several verses from Psalm 2 back to God (Acts 4:25-26)—and then they based the rest of their prayer on that passage of Scripture. Why would they do that?

The psalm they chose is all about God's Messiah. It talks about how the nations and the kings of the earth are going to rise up against the Messiah. But as you read on, it tells how the One who sits enthroned in heaven scoffs at them (v. 4).

And then about halfway through Psalm 2, we are privileged to listen in on a conversation between God the Father and Jesus the Son. Jesus is speaking, and He says of God, "He said to me, 'You are my Son; today I have become your Father. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession'" (vv. 7-8).

Do you get this? The Father promised Jesus the nations as His inheritance!

The early church, led by the Spirit, saw this, and they said, "Wow, this is great! The Father has promised Jesus all nations, and Jesus told us to preach the gospel to the nations. Now, the authorities in Jerusalem just said, 'You can't preach anymore.' So, Lord, grant Your servants boldness to proclaim Your Word, and, Lord, get involved. Do whatever it takes to allow the Word to go forth with power so that Jesus can receive His inheritance." That's why they prayed the way they did.

Here's the point: Their prayer was not a way of getting things from God. It was the way God had chosen to accomplish His will on planet earth. They understood that their lives and circumstances were for the purpose of participating with God on earth.

This truth represents everything in prayer. If you get this, you get it all. The God who initiates prayer has given us the amazing privilege of praying for His will, and as we do, His power is released to accomplish it. That's why Jesus taught us to pray, "Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven" (Matthew 6:10).

They prayed big prayers!
What would a little prayer have been, in their circumstance? Well, imagine it. The believers are crowded into a house in Jerusalem, standing with leaders who have just been released from prison. Someone is probably cleaning the wounds Peter and John received from getting roughed up by the authorities—maybe wiping off some blood or dirt. Just weeks before, these same authorities had killed Jesus. How would you have prayed?

I think my prayer would have been: "Help us! Protect us! Keep us safe!" But that was not their prayer. Instead, theirs was a big prayer that focused on the plans and purposes of God.

It is not wrong to pray a little prayer. I pray a lot of prayers for protection. There's nothing wrong with that ... unless that's all you ever pray.

What God is waiting on—and what the world desperately needs—is for the church of Jesus Christ to rise up and begin to pray the big prayers that shake heaven for God's kingdom to advance on earth.

They had no sooner finished their prayer than the building began to shake, and they were filled with the Holy Spirit again, and they immediately began to speak the Word of God with great boldness (Acts 4:31).

According to the book of Acts, within five weeks of that prayer meeting, the teaching of Jesus had filled the streets of Jerusalem. Within the lifetime of everyone in that prayer meeting, they had turned the world upside down.

When is the church going to experience this kind of power again? If it's going to happen in our lifetime, we've got to learn to pray big, with great boldness.

AFRICA PRAYS for AMERICA
50,000 Expected to Gather in Prayer at Capitol Mall in Washington DC
Washington DC –
50,000 people, Africans and Americans alike, are expected to descend upon the Capitol West Mall in Washington DC on Saturday, October 16, 2010 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and participate in Africa Prays For America, a unique and unprecedented prayer gathering hosted by the African Strategic Leadership Prayer Network (www.aslpn.org).
African Strategic Leadership Prayer Network (ASLPN), an assembly of African Christian leaders from around the world, is a non-profit Christian charitable organization dedicated to prayer and intercession. The ASLPN said, “We are coming, leaders and lay people, we are coming from dozens of African Nations, we are coming 50,000 strong to petition heaven in unity. We, African believers, call all Christians to join us on October 16 to pray for America. May our light never go out.”
Billy Wilson, Executive Director of the Awaking America Alliance (www.awakeningamerica.us) said, “For hundreds of years, America has been sending missionaries to Africa. Passionate men and women gave their lives to reach souls thousands of miles away and continue to bring the gospel to millions in that heartland. But now, America’s light grows dim and it is Africa’s time to reach out and pray for America.” Wilson continued, “We are grateful for the African Nations response to America’s spiritual need and deeply encouraged by their desire to bring Christians together to intercede on behalf of America through prayer.”
Pastor Michael Dada from Deeper Life Bible Church (www.deeperlifedc.org) in Washington, DC, said, "The nation of America has been a blessing to almost every other nation under heaven at the peak of her glory. The poor and the weak, both as a nation and as individuals have all taken refuge under her protective wings. But, now that the glory of America is fading away like the stars of the morning, is the time for all the beneficiaries of her glory to arise and cry out in prayer to the Lord with passion for the restoration of United States of America.
“My church and I have decided to join Africa Prays for America,” Pastor Dada continued, “because we believe that God will have mercy and restore the spiritual, political, economic and social status of America for His glory. (Haggai 2:9) “The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.”
On April 26, 2008 in Louisville KY, the Awakening American Alliance, through its Executive Director, Billy Wilson, invited African Pastors and leaders to join with the American church in crying out to God for revival in the Church and for a spiritual awakening in the nation.
In response to this invitation, the African Strategic Leadership Prayer Network (ASLPN) was formed on April 28, 2008. ASLPN also participated in Empowered21 (www.empowered21.com) in April 2010 and most recently in an African Day Prayer and Worship Service held on May 22, 2010 in Washington DC. ASLPN invites every tribe, every community, every church and every city to participate in Africa Prays for America on October 16, 2010.
Bishop Darlingston Johnson, Senior Pastor of Bethel World Outreach Church and Presiding Prelate of Bethel World Outreach Ministries International (www.bwomi.org), said, “We are gathering together the African Church to pray for this nation because more than ever America desperately depends on the prayers of the church. We know and it is our firm belief, in the constant conflict between Heaven and Hell or the sayers of this earth firmly believing, prayer is the deciding factor.”

Pray America! Pray!

40 Days+ Into the Streets Begins!
September 21, 2010

We are in great anticipation of what God is about to do as we, in obedience, take prayer into the streets of America! This is it! On Wednesday, Sept 22nd we launch "40 Days+ into the Streets". We are asking you to commit and pray every day with us until we see a Great Awakening come upon our land. See "The Course of a nation is in Our Hands". We are reminded of Elijah's persistence in praying for rain in I Kings 18:41. Elijah heard the sound of an abundance of rain coming, but it had not yet manifest. He knew it was coming and refused to quit praying until he saw what God had promised him manifest. This is the kind of prayer God is asking from us! Persistent, fervent and passionate!

We are asking Christians across the nation to take time out once a day to pray at a flagpole in their community. See our Top 5 Prayer Guide. Flagpoles are located at Government buildings, schools, colleges and universities. They represent key areas in America that must see true reformation. Imagine God’s response when He looks down from heaven and sees His people all across America crying out to Him from our streets for a Great Awakening, and for His Glory to be revealed!

If You live in the Dallas Metroplex we invite you to join us as we pray everyday at Courthouses and Schools in the surrounding areas. See locations here. Our plan is to pray at the City Courthouses on Mondays, then the High Schools within the particular cities on Tuesday through Friday. Prayer will begin at 12:00 noon each day at the locations – just find the flag pole.

Please Let Us Know If you plan to participate in daily prayer at the flagpoles across America by emailing us at inthestreets@pray-america-pray.org. We want to know how many of you are out there praying and believing God for a Great Awakening to sweep across our land!

May God Richly Reward you for the sacrifice you are making for Our Nation and for all the souls that will be saved as God pours out His Spirit across our land!

Together, We Can Change A Nation!

Prayer As Spiritual WarfarePrintE-mail

By Dave Butts

My favorite Bible story is found in 2 Kings 6. It is the story of the prophet Elisha and his involvement in the war between Israel and the Arameans. The king of the Arameans had declared war against Israel, which wasn’t a good thing for Israel with its smaller army. The Aramean king called his generals together and gave them the battle plans for the attack on Israel. The one thing that the king hadn’t planned on was that God was listening to the strategy as well. He told Elisha the enemy plans, who then immediately passed the information on to the King of Israel. With his much smaller army, the Israelite king simply moved his army out of the way and avoided defeat.

After a couple of fiascoes like this, the king of the Arameans became suspicious. He called his generals in and demanded to know who was leaking information to the Israelites. His generals explained that it wasn’t any of them, but the prophet Elisha who had revealed the plans. They explained to the king that Elisha knew everything that went on, even the things in the king’s own bedchamber.

Upset over this information, the king began to make plans to take care of the prophet who was interfering in his attempts at conquest. The king’s new strategy was really simple. Go after one man…. Elisha! In 2 Kings chapter six, the story continues with Elisha and his young servant in the little village of Dothan. We can imagine what it must have been like that morning. The servant got up first, as was his custom, to go outside and prepare breakfast for his master. As he walked outside he looked in terror about him, as he saw the entire army of the Arameans surrounding the tiny village. He rushed back in and woke up the prophet. Can’t you see Elisha walking outside the hut, muttering and rubbing the sleep from his eyes? The first words out of his mouth were amazing, "Those who are with us are more than those who are with them." His young servant had to be thinking, "Wait a minute. There are just two of us. Prophets must be lousy mathematicians."

Then Elisha began to pray. What is astonishing in his prayer is what he didn’t pray. He didn’t begin to panic by praying, "Oh Lord, save us from this army." Instead, there was this calm, yet amazing request: "Lord, open this young man’s eyes." I believe the implied meaning was, "Lord, open this young man’s eyes so that he can see what is already there."

Elisha’s prayer was answered immediately as his servant’s eyes were opened and he saw there, surrounding the army of the Arameans, the army of heaven --a host of angels, decked out in battle armor, ready to move at God’s command.

I’ll let you read the conclusion of the story on your own. It has a fascinating finish. The point of the story for our purposes is that Elisha did not ask God to send angels. With his prophet’s discernment he saw or sensed their presence. His prayer was for his young servant, that he too, would be able to know of the protective presence of God’s angels on their behalf.

The Bible teaches, from beginning to end, of the existence of the invisible world, the world of the spirit. A world of angels and demons, yet a world that we touch daily as those who have been given not merely a body, but a spirit. This invisible world is difficult to believe in for many of us today. We tend to focus on that which our senses tell us is real. Things we can touch, taste, smell, hear, or see are real to us. An invisible world of the spirit seems a bit unreal or mystical.

One of the things I love about the way God’s Word presents the things of the spirit, is the way it stays away from the mystical or unreal. It presents the unseen world as simply a matter-of-fact. There are things that are seen; there are things that are unseen. Both are real. One is not more real than the other. The invisible world is not a matter of myth but of solid, well-grounded reality.

Jesus had a firm grasp of this reality. He was aware of and interacted with this invisible world on a regular basis. After His baptism, Jesus went into the wilderness for forty days of prayer and fasting. During this time He encountered the Devil and was faced with a time of temptation. The battle is not presented with a flourish as if to say, "This was a unique, once-for-all battle reserved only for the Son of God." Instead, it almost seems as though it is a model of what may happen to any believer who makes a decision to follow at all costs, the direction of God. At any rate, the battle in the wilderness was not waged with miraculous signs, but with a clear-headed use of the Word of God to counter the suggestions of the Enemy.

As Jesus moved through His years of ministry in His earthly body, He encountered the invisible realm a number of times. There was the time He was preparing to go to Jerusalem and Peter spoke up against the trip. Jesus turned to him, and we can almost see Him pointing His finger in Peter’s direction as He said, "Get behind Me Satan."

How unnerving that must have been for Simon Peter! I don’t believe Jesus was calling Peter, "Satan," but rather was responding to Satan himself. Jesus understood how Satan could put words into the mouths of others, like Peter, and simply went to the root of the problem with His rebuke. By the way, if Satan could put his thoughts into the mind of the Apostle Peter, do you suppose he can do the same to us? I’m convinced that one of the major reasons for the many commands given in Scriptures regarding watching what we say, is the possibility that our words, unchecked, may contain the thoughts of the Enemy.

There is another encounter with the unseen world that gives great insight into Jesus’ beliefs concerning the role of the Enemy in human affairs. It concerned a healing of a woman who had experienced a crippling for 18 years. She was so bent over that she couldn’t stand up straight. Jesus healed her on the Sabbath. In response to His critics, He said, "Should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?"

Jesus believed and taught that, at least some illness can be caused by the Enemy. He did not teach that all illness is from Satan, but that some may find its source in the spirit world.

Have you ever noticed, as you read the Gospels, how many times demons manifest themselves in the midst of Jesus’ times of teaching? Jesus gave us a great model for dealing with the demonic. He interrupted His teaching just long enough to get rid of the distraction, then turned immediately back to His teaching. His focus was not on the kingdom of darkness, but on God’s Kingdom. Jesus did not have a deliverance ministry, in the sense that He went out looking for demons to cast out of people. He went about proclaiming the Kingdom of Heaven. When a demon had the audacity to interrupt, Jesus dealt decisively with it.

The Apostle Paul continued the attitude of his Master toward the invisible world. He clearly saw Satan as a real, created being, who was scheming against God and those who followed the ways of God. In 2 Corinthians 2:10-11, Paul spoke of the importance of forgiveness, "in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes." Later in 2 Corinthians he spoke of the god of this age (a clear reference to Satan) who is blinding the minds of unbelievers. In 1 Timothy 4:1, Paul warned us that in later times (ours?) some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.

It is Paul who began to develop a military terminology for this spiritual conflict. He referred to Christians as soldiers. He told us that we do not wage war as this world does, but rather we use spiritual weapons. Then in Ephesians 6:10-18, he gave us this great treatise on spiritual warfare with special emphasis on putting on the armor of God.

Not to be left out, the Apostle Peter added his teaching concerning the battle in 1 Peter 5:8-9: "Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him….". In his second letter, he wrote of angels who sinned, whom God sent to hell to be held for judgment (2 Pet.2:4). In his short letter, Jude also spoke of these fallen angels, and gave us the amazing story of how the archangel Michael got into a dispute with the devil over the body of Moses (Jude 9).

It’s obvious the New Testament authors took spiritual warfare seriously. We ignore it to our detriment and danger. Certainly some may go too far in their practice of this doctrine. We often hear reference to some Christian teacher who sees a demon behind every bush. I doubt demons are much interested in bushes, but the point is well taken. If we are not careful, we can end up focusing more on the devil than Jesus. But much of the Church in the last century has taken the opposite tactic of simply ignoring or denying the devil.

There is however, a growing awareness today in the Church that our battle is real and against that ages-old Enemy whom the saints have always faced. The good news of the Bible is that our victory is sure and is based on the victory of Jesus over the enemy at the Cross and the empty tomb. Our job in prayer is to walk in that victory, putting on the armor of God, and watchfully praying for God’s Kingdom to triumph in our day.

2nd Vision Action Plan Revealed!

August 18, 2010

God is moving by His Spirit, and the time has come for us to reveal the 2nd Vision Action Plan so you can begin preparing and help us get the word out! This is a very critical and strategic time in America, and in this Campaign.

In May of 2009 came the Vision of a Great Awakening sweeping from the West Coast to the East Coast. Then, January 12th of this year came a 2nd Vision showing a key strategy we believe will have great impact on America. If Christians and churches all across the nation will participate, not only will we touch God's heart and move His hand, but it will capture our nation's attention, as we take prayer into the streets of America.

Imagine...All across America from the West Coast – East Cost... God’s People gathering at flag poles, praying for our nation. Relentlessly EVERYDAY – until we see God pour out His Spirit, like rain upon America!

What: A Call for all Christians to begin DAILY Prayer at the Flagpoles across America until we see a Great Awakening as described in the 1st Vision.

When: Christians everywhere join the "Pray, America! Pray!" Campaign on Wednesday, September 22nd as we (in conjunction with the "See You at the Pole" event) kick off the DAILY Prayer Campaign at the flagpoles across America. We are asking Christians everywhere to make a commitment to PRAY EVERY DAY at the flagpoles until we see God come and pour out His Spirit across this nation. See the 1st Vision Video of the Great Awakening here. Also see "The Course of a Nation is in our Hands...Pray!" message.

Where: Flagpoles at Government buildings, Schools, Businesses, Communities, etc. – everywhere there's a flagpole with an American flag.

Who: Mobilization of Christians and churches across the nation. If your Church is not yet participating, then please encourage them to connect with us here.

PRAY AMERICA! PRAY!

2nd Vision: Logo and Flagpole Vision
January 12, 2010
It was several months after the original Vision of "Pray, America! Pray!" that I was in an intense time of prayer regarding the Campaign. I was asking God, “God what do you want this to look like? Show us Your heart. Show us the details.” And, as I prayed, I began to see the Logo, I saw the words PRAY, then a Flagpole, and then AMERICA PRAY. The Flagpole really stood out to me, and then God began to show me what I believe is His Strategy.

The Flagpoles would become like an icon of this Campaign as they represent America, and are everywhere. He was showing me they are in every Community, at every School, every College and University, and at every Government building. All these are public places where we can gather legally, whenever we want to. They also represent the key areas in our nation that need to be saturated in prayer, such as Government and Education.

I could see God’s plan to call His people to rally for daily prayer across the nation, at the flagpoles until we see a Great Awakening in America. And, as I prayed I saw the Logo with a Nationwide marketing campaign and Media Blitz, including a strong Publicity Campaign saturating America so it could not be missed. I could see it on Billboards, Buses – everywhere – so no one could miss it.

This is where we take the Campaign into the Streets for all of America to see and hear God’s cry for our great country to turn back to Him. As all of this takes place, we believe the Spirit of God will be moving, and the unsaved and prodigals will be drawn to God, by His Spirit.

A Burden For RevivalPrintE-mail

By Dave Butts

Revival comes to those who are desperate for it. Many today are talking about spiritual awakening and even beginning to pray about it. But have we allowed God to place within us the burden necessary to pray desperately for God to show up in our midst? Are we willing to "pray the price" to see God move in a powerful way in the Church today? As I continue to learn how to move my prayers into alignment with God’s will, praying Scripture has become increasingly important. As I pray God’s Word I find myself praying in ways I would never have found myself praying before. So it is as we begin to place ourselves before the Lord in asking for a burden for revival. I have been greatly impacted by the prayer of the Psalmist in Psalm 79.

This is a powerful prayer for revival. It was prayed from a broken heart that saw the people of God under attack and the promises of God unfulfilled.

O God, the nations have invaded your inheritance; they have defiled your holy temple, they have reduced Jerusalem to rubble. They have given the bodies of your servants as food to the birds of the air, the flesh of your saints to the beasts of the earth. They have poured out like water all around Jerusalem, and there is no one to bury the dead. We are objects of reproach to our neighbors, of scorn and derision to those around us. How long, O LORD? Will you be angry forever? How long will your jealousy burn like fire? Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the kingdoms that do not call on your name; for they have devoured Jacob and destroyed his homeland. Do not hold against us the sins of the fathers; may your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need. Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake. Why should the nations say, "Where is their God?" Before our eyes, make known among the nations that you avenge the outpoured of your servants. May the groans of the prisoners come before you; by the strength of your arm preserve those condemned to die. Pay back into the laps of our neighbors seven times the reproach they have hurled at you, O Lord. Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will praise you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise.

Praying through Psalm 79 is a great way to develop a biblical burden for revival. The text breaks down into a great outline for passionate prayer:

1. Recognizing your current situation is a critical place to begin. The people of Israel were oppressed…under attack by their enemies. They finally got to a place of desperation-- "for we are in desperate need" vs.8. Until the Church today arrives at that place of desperation, we will never develop a burden for revival.

2. Get serious about the glory of God. Pagans were disparaging God because of the sorry situation of the Israelites. "Where is their God?" they asked. The fact that the world would ask such a question should bring great grief to God’s people. In a very real sense, this is exactly what the world is saying of the Church today….."Where is your God?"

3. Recognition of your current situation and passion for God’s glory will lead you to petition. It is at this point that you find Israel praying for mercy, deliverance, and forgiveness. It is a very personal sort of prayer that focuses on the needs of the people of God for restoration into the favor of God.

4. Taking the prayer a step further, we see the Psalmist asking God to step into the situation. In a very real sense, the Psalmist prays, "God, You answer the accusations of the enemy. By Your actions Lord, pay back the reproach that the world has heaped upon You through the sad condition of Your people."

5. The result of such a prayer is worship and praise. It’s the natural result of seeing God work. Even before full-blown revival arrives, there is worship erupting from the people of God. And along with that is the commitment to pass it on to the next generation.

Praying such a prayer for revival is not a guarantee of revival. It is merely preparing the ground of the human heart for a fresh work of God. Praying with passion for revival begins to create a burden for revival among the Lord’s people. And into such a prepared state, the Lord has often poured His rain from heaven.

Martyn Lloyd-Jones speaks of this preparatory work of prayer in his book, Revival: "Our essential trouble is that we are content with a very superficial and preliminary knowledge of God, His being, His cause….we spend our lives in busy activism….instead of realizing our own failure,(that) we are not attracting anybody to Christ and that they probably see nothing in us that makes them desire to come to Him.

"The inevitable and constant preliminary to revival has always been in a thirst for God, a thirst, a living thirst for a knowledge of the living God and a longing and a burning desire to see Him acting, manifesting Himself and His power, rising and scattering His enemies…..the thirst for God and the longing for the exhibition of His glory are the essential preliminaries to revival" (pages 90-91).

May our prayers for revival develop a great thirst for God, not only in our own lives, but in the lives of those around us.

Dallas Ministry Launches National "Pray, America! Pray!" Campaign
Dallas, TX – August 2, 2010

Shekinah Today Ministries announces the national launch of the “Pray, America! Pray!” Campaign – an urgent call for National repentance and prayer on a massive scale, from the Pulpits, to the Pews, then to the Multitudes.

Darrel and Cindy deVille, founders of Shekinah Today Ministries, believe 2010 is a defining year for America, and God in His abundant mercy, is giving His Church and America a “Window of Time” to respond to His cry for repentance and daily prayer to help change the course of this nation, before it’s too late.

Cindy says, “Like a prodigal, America has been raging down a path of self-destruction, and now our nation hangs in the balance. What we do or don't do as His leaders and people will determine the course of this nation – either the Greatest Awakening ever seen or the fall and destruction of America, including a serious economic collapse, war in the streets and on our shores. I also see a greater persecution of Christians coming if things don’t change. This is very sobering, and we must act now! God is counting on His leaders and people to seize this moment, to humbly unite across the nation, in repentance and prayer, and lead America back to God.”

The founders believe the biblical solution to begin changing the course of America and bring a Great Awakening must include 3 Keys, implemented on a massive scale, locally and nationally:
1. Repentance – beginning with the pulpits of America.
2. Unity through humility – with one heart, in one accord, for one purpose.
3. Prayer – daily focused prayer.

“We see this in 2 Chronicles 7:14, prayer must include repentance and humility, along with unity, being in one accord, as they were before the great outpouring in the book of Acts. All 3 keys are integrated into the National ‘Pray, America! Pray!’ Campaign action plan.” says Darrel.

Shekinah Today Ministries is sending forth an URGENT call to Christian leaders and churches all across America to join them in the “Pray, America! Pray!” Campaign, which is a united effort across denominational lines to call for repentance, daily prayer, and strategic action to help turn America back to God.

The “Pray, America! Pray!” Campaign Plan shows how this can be implemented both individually and corporately on a local and national level. To learn more about this Campaign and how you or your organization can take action today and help bring a Great Awakening to America, visit their website at www.pray-america-pray.org.

A New Call For Extraordinary PrayerPrintE-mail

A New Call For Extraordinary Prayer
By Dave Butts

With all that has been happening in our nation, it eventually becomes very easy to allow our attention to be diverted back to what we call "normal." Unfortunately, "normal" often means life without God and without a dependence upon Him in prayer. I believe it is vital for us to hold on to our first response - - the response of prayer.

The Church desperately needs to both issue and respond to a new call for extraordinary prayer. Extraordinary prayer goes beyond the normal expectations of the past. It is prayer that can bring God’s power to bear on a whole new world facing us--a world of uncertainty, fear and war.

The Bible records times of extraordinary prayer like this. One good example occurred in the Book of Esther. The crisis there concerned the lives of every Jew held captive in Babylon. A decree had been issued that would result in genocide for the Jews. Queen Esther was going to risk her life by going to the King on behalf of her people; however, before she went, she called her people to three days of prayer and fasting for her mission. Extraordinary prayer brought about extraordinary deliverance.

The Book of Ezra gives another good example of extraordinary prayer. Ezra was preparing to lead a group of the exiles back from Babylon to Jerusalem. The king had even offered troops for protection on the perilous journey. But Ezra had refused the troops, pointing out that God Himself would protect them. As the people gathered, Ezra began to realize how dangerous the trip would be and that they should not merely presume upon God’s protection. So he called the people to humble themselves and pray and fast over the journey. God heard their prayers and gave them safe passage to their destination.

There are many examples of this in more recent history. The great British preacher, Charles H. Spurgeon, was used by God to bring many into the Kingdom and in the process, a large church was built in London. He challenged his people to extraordinary prayer if they wanted to see God’s hand at work in their church. He wrote, "Dear Friends, we do not know what God may do for us if we do but pray for a blessing of the Holy Spirit… Have we not tried to preach without trying to pray? Is it not likely that the church has been putting forth its preaching hand but not its praying hand? O Dear friends! Let us agonize in prayer, and it shall come to pass that this Music Hall shall witness the sighs and groans of the penitent and the songs of the converted. It shall yet happen that this vast host shall not come and go as now it does, but little the better; but men shall go out of this hall praising God and saying--It was good to be there; it was none other than the house of God, and the very gate of heaven. This much to stir you up to prayer."

In the United States, the revivals known as the Great Awakenings came in response to Christians gathering for extraordinary prayer. Often called "Concerts of Prayer," God used these times of prayer to bring awakening to His people. Robert Bakke in his wonderful book, The Power of Extraordinary Prayer writes, "It (the Concert of Prayer) was born out of convictions that say with certainty that, regardless of how bright or dark the hour we live in, God is about to do something greater than He’s ever done before. Furthermore, it said that God would not move forward with His ever-increasing and ever more marvelous plans until Christians agreed with Him and agreed with each other about what He was going to do. A great and lucid vision of Christ’s earthly reign was before their eyes--with every nation, people, tribe and tongue united as one company before the throne of God, Christ the Son, and the sevenfold Spirit. It was a compelling vision that would not let Christians rest or let go of God until the rule of God held sway in every aspect of life." (Pg.133)

Read again that last sentence from Bakke: "It was a compelling vision that would not let Christians rest or let go of God until the rule of God held sway in every aspect of life." Have you ever made a decision to pray like that? Not merely God bless us or even God protect us--but a life-changing commitment to pray until the "rule of God held sway in every aspect of life"? This should not just be a response made only by individual Christians. Has your church made a decision to pray extraordinarily for the working of God’s power? The key to the Concert of Prayer was for Christians to gather together for times of extraordinary prayer--as was the practice of the early Church.

We are living in times that are not "normal." What has been normal for us in our prayer life and experience of Christianity will not suffice for this hour. God is calling us to extraordinary prayer! How will you respond?

THE MISSING LINK TO REVIVAL? REPENTANCE!
That there are conditions necessary for revival is virtually undisputed. II Chronicles 7:14 is often cited. And that we have prayed and prayed, at least a resilient core has persisted in prayer, without a revival coming to America, is also true. Much emphasis of late has been placed on the willingness of the church to do identificational repentance for the sins of society, without cleaning its own house, without personal repentance. We should know that repentance has to begin with us – or we will see others and the world in a jaded way (Mt. 7). The beam must be removed that affects our perspective – then and only then can we see more clearly. And that happens only when we acknowledge our own wrong.
So this year, the emphasis on Cry Out America has been expanded from the one-hour, to 8 Days of Consecration! A new booklet, Consecrate the People! has been prepared by Claude King, based on the book of Joel, and it will soon be available from LifeWay or free on-line as a PDF download that can be bookmarked, personalized for your area for use during the week of the COA event.
Yes – let’s repent. Let’s call the church to repent. Let’s redefine repentance in way that helps the church get a handle on it. It is an awakening of the deadliness of sin, and the life dynamic of holiness. It is a sadness about our spiritual condition and a plea to God for the change capacity that comes only by the Spirit. It is mental moment, in which we “come to ourselves”, shocked by the degree of compromise we have allowed, and wake up, so shaken by our status that we resolve to renew our relationship with the Father. We act. We move. We get out sinful environments. We break ties. We migrate toward righteousness. We “return” home! Our world view changes – and it is forever changed. Repentance affects our thinking, our emotions, our dead or damaged spirit. It is the gateway to regeneration and change (conversion).
There are things we must do for revival and renewal – and one of them is to repent! And yet …
A GOD WHO ACTS!
In Israel’s history, when the destiny of God’s people was at stake, and therefore his purposes were at risk, God acted. He acted to redeem Israel from the grip of slavery in Egypt. He acted to confront the nation of Israel, the Northern Kingdom, when Baal worship, paganism, had been adopted as the state religion. Nature reacted – the heaven’s refused to give rain. The drought created a national crisis that was interpreted by Elijah as the judgment of God on the nation. It only ended when the nation was forced to a choice between Baalism and Yahweh – and God acted again to renew his people, to show himself alive. He answered Elijah by fire. And then when Judah was carried into captivity, and temple was destroyed and Jerusalem lay in ruins, God acted to raise the nation from the dead. To bring them back into the land and restore them as a nation. Three times God acted in unprecedented ways – to redeem, to renew, and to restore the nation from the dead. In these three seasons, the miracles of the Old Testament cluster – the Exodus, the Ministry of Elijah and Elisha, the season of the Exile and Return to the Land. Everyone of these periods involved national struggles with idolatry.
God acts – when his purposes are at risk, and his people are in danger of being overcome, seduced by paganism. He acts to show himself alive. He goes to war with the gods, to reveal himself as the only true and living God.
VOICES FROM ANCIENT WELLS
In the last three days, and once last week, I had calls from interesting places. One came from the region where the Pilgrims cast anchor and wrote the Mayflower Compact. The second came from the area where the great tabernacle was built by Billy Sunday, and thousands were touched and revived. There, a dynamic Tea-Party movement has morphed into a cry for spiritual renewal. “We realized that political action would not save the country – only God could do that. We must pray,” the individual declared. A third, last week, came from a pastor who had taken his leaders to Camp Creek, NC, the site a great revival in 1886, that shook that region. A fourth came from someone in Kentucky, talking about the campmeeting revivals of the 2nd Great Awakening.
How interesting – voices from the sites of ancient wells, the places of old national altars. Is God stirring in bowels of the nation, readying us for divine intervention? From around the world, there are prayer efforts going on for America. One leader told me, “We are praying that America does not fall. The world – Christians around the world – need America. No other nation is poised to serve the Christian cause around the world as America is now doing.” Those from other nations see our peril more clearly than we do – and they are praying for a spiritual awakening in America, for the sake of the world, for the sake of Christian causes, for the sake of our obligation to the Great Commission.
COORDINATORS … COORDINATORS … COORDINATORS
Our greatest need now is for more county coordinators!

Cry Out America 2010

Washington DC – America’s 234th birthday, its day of declared independence observed on July 4, was celebrated across the nation with parades, fireworks, and neighborhood picnics. The stark reality is that America remains in a dire physical and spiritual crisis. The economy has been deeply shaken. Political leaders and citizens are at odds over the controversial issue of immigration reform. Overall church attendance continues to decline across the nation. America is now the third largest mission field in the world and the next generation is desperately searching for truth.
In what appears to be a very trying time for the Church and the nation, the Awakening America Alliance (www.awakeningamerica.us) believes that America could be on the verge of a sweeping move of God’s Spirit that will touch every state, every county and every heart.
Cry Out America, in conjunction with the Awakening America Alliance, will hold its third annual nationwide county courthouse prayer gatherings on September 11. Billy Wilson, Executive Director of the Awakening America Alliance said, “Millions of Americans are rediscovering the spiritual discipline of fasting. Church planting efforts are gaining momentum in most denominations. The generations are turning their hearts toward one another and the language of awakening is increasing in the American church. Our cry is that these first notes of revival will crescendo into a symphony of spiritual intensity that will turn the tide.”
In the first two years of Cry Out America the counties participating have doubled to over 750 with at least one gathering in every state and in all 38 counties with populations over one million and it is on target to exceed these numbers in 2010.
This year, beginning at the National Day of Prayer on May 6, the Awakening America Alliance launched a 20 Weeks, 8 Days, 1 Hour Initiative leading up to the nationwide prayer gatherings called Praying Through the Heart of The Year for The Soul of The Nationcomplete with weekly prayer guides, implementation guides, power point presentations, supportive teaching strategies and promotional materials to assist in the growth of the county courthouse prayer gatherings.
Claude V. King, coauthor of Experiencing God and Fresh Encounter said, “As in the days of Joel, our nation is facing an ecological and economic disaster of historical proportions--the kind we will tell our children and grandchildren about. Our moral condition seems to be growing darker and darker because the light of the gospel of Christ is not shining brightly from the churches to dispel the darkness. These desperate times call for drastic measures. Now is the time for the churches of America to sound an alarm, call a sacred assembly, consecrate the people, and cry out to God for forgiveness, cleansing, mercy. Perhaps He will relent, heal, and once again bless our land. Would you join me as we cry out, America?”
The Awakening America Alliance was formed as an initiative with a broad coalition of nationally prominent Christian denominations, churches, para-church ministries, as well as Christian leaders and lay people from every walk of life. The purpose of the Alliance is to increase the awareness of the deep spiritual need in America and to pursue a fresh spiritual awakening that will impact the world.
“Cry Out America comes at a crucial time in our nation’s history. On a daily basis, numerous commentators express their shock at how far this nation has strayed from a spirit of freedom and public trust in God. American’s greatest need, even in this difficult season continues to be their need to know Jesus Christ. This is why we are praying for a “Christ” Awakening.” said Wilson.
These are critical times, and in the opinion of many American citizens, it is time for America to return to the spiritual roots in which it began. Cry Out America is mobilizing believers across the nation in prayer to repent and reclaim the heart of America for God. The Alliance in a bold public statement is calling Christian believers in every American county to unite on September 11 in humbling themselves before God and crying out for revival in their region.
“If you believe,” said Wilson, “that extraordinary prayer is needed to awaken our nation and you are willing to get involved to make this historic event happen, then I encourage you to visit us on our website by going to www.awakeningamerica.us/cryoutamerica, find your county and apply to serve today.”

The Task of the WatchmanPrintE-mail

By Dave Butts

“I have posted watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the LORD, give yourselves no rest, and give him no rest till he establishes Jerusalem and makes her the praise of the earth” (Isaiah 62:6-7).

“Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. ‘Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?’ he asked Peter. ‘Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak’” (Matthew 26:40-41).

A Watchman’s Story
The young watchman stood silently at his post on the wall. The cool Judean night caused an involuntary shiver. It had been a quiet evening…a few latecomers were allowed through the pedestrian gate, but nothing else. It was almost time for his shift to end when his eyes caught a glimpse of something glowing over the nearest hill to the north. Peering into the darkness confirmed that something was amiss not too far from the city. It could be a movement of enemy troops with their torches betraying their position. Of course, it could just be the campfire of travelers…but why now in the middle of the night?
Whatever it was, the young watchman’s orders were clear…he was to sound the alarm. Raising the trumpet to his lips, he sounded the three short blasts that would bring his superiors to the wall. Within minutes, the quiet sentry post was filled with soldiers. An armed scouting party was sent to the general area of the fire. The glow from beyond the hill died down and soon the soldiers returned. A shepherd’s hut had caught fire when a gust of wind blown across the sleeping shepherd’s coals had ignited the thatch.
Though the fire was not a danger to the city, the watchman was commended by his commanding officer for his sharp eyes. It could easily have been a threat that would have been stopped by the watchful eyes of the young man. This was the very reason why the watchmen were in place.

Watchmen of Today
There is a movement of prayer taking place all over the planet that is firmly rooted in Scripture. It is the call of God to His people to take their places on the wall as watchmen. Whether we look to the Old Testament or New, we find that God is calling us to watch and pray.
Our modern culture does not readily identify with the ancient concept of watchmen on the walls. To accept the Lord’s call to this great movement of prayer then, we will need to train ourselves in what it means to be a part of this great company of the “alert.” The Isaiah 62 passage, quoted above, helps us greatly in this task.
It is clear that the job of a watchman is a continual commitment. It is not sporadic or dependent upon our feelings. Because of the life or death nature and constancy of the watchman’s task, it is an assignment for the many, not just the one. Believers working in tandem, sharing shifts of prayer, will be the most effective. Isaiah 62:6-7 describes an intensity that must be shared…day and night…never silent…give yourself no rest. Only groups of committed believers who band together in watchful prayer will be able to stay at their post.
Notice also in Scripture that it is God who posts the watchmen. This is a divine assignment, not just the latest prayer fad. To stand on the wall as a watchman, stationed there by the Lord Himself, is a great privilege. We need to receive and obey such a call with gratitude and humility.
Perhaps the overwhelming characteristic of watchman prayer is that it is to be done with open eyes. This does not necessarily imply physical eyes, although it certainly can, but our spiritual eyes must be held wide open. We are to watch and pray.
What is it we are looking for as we pray? I would suggest that we first look for an enemy attack. Certainly in Old Testament times, this sort of defensive watchfulness was at the heart of the task. The watchman on the wall was always on the alert for any attempt of an enemy to attack or infiltrate the city. Too many times, the walls of the Church and of our cities today are open to attack because of a lack of watchfulness. In 2 Corinthians 2:11, Paul wrote that we are “not unaware” of the schemes of the enemy. Unless praying watchmen are on duty, we too often find ourselves painfully unaware of the attempts of the enemy to disrupt and destroy.
On the opposite end of matters, I believe that the watchmen are also to keep their eyes open to see and discern moves of God. All too often we miss out on what God is doing because we are not paying attention. The watcher should always be asking, “Lord, what are You doing in our church or city this day? Is there something You are calling you people to do in cooperation with what You are doing?” How much more effective we would be if, instead of starting our own projects for God, we found ourselves moving alongside a current move of God!
The other area for watchfulness is discerning the needs of the people of God. A watchman on the wall in the Old Testament would often see human needs and be able to send someone to meet those needs. Is there someone among you who is prayerfully watching the people of God to see who is hurting or who is in need? We often talk about shepherding the flock of God. What greater way to shepherd than to continually watch in prayer over the sheep the Lord loves?
What will be the results of watchmen prayers? According to Isaiah, we will see the firm establishment of the Kingdom of God. The prophet speaks of the establishment of Jerusalem, the dwelling place of God among His people. In both Old and New Covenant, Jerusalem represents God among man. Jesus’ main message was the coming kingdom, present in Him. Emmanuel…God with us!
Another result of this powerful prayer movement will be that the glory of God will be seen among the nations. In the Matthew passage above, Jesus wanted the disciples to watch with him and to pray for Him. How do we do that today? Have you ever asked the question, “Lord, how can I pray for You today?” I decided to try that in my own prayer life. I started praying for Him…feeling pretty inadequate and a bit foolish. I began to bless Him, agreeing with many passages in the Psalms to “bless the Lord.” As I continued to do that it began to emerge as prayer for His glory to be seen on the planet that has rejected Him. I began to sense that I was now praying for and about something that was close to His heart. As we watch and pray, we find ourselves lining up with the prophet Habakkuk and crying out “for the glory of God to cover the earth as the waters cover the sea” (Habakkuk 2:14). Prayer warriors, it is time to ascend the wall of your city and begin to fulfill your calling as a watchman of God.
