A Plea for Fervent and Prevailing Prayer
My nephew called me as they loaded my brother into an ambulance.
“He fell about 15 feet from a scaffolding and hit his head. He’s conscious now, but it looks bad.”
I was one of my nephew’s first calls. He knew we needed to ignite a fervent prayer movement on behalf of his father. . . .
What do you do when you don’t know what to do anymore? When the rising tide of moral degradation in the nation seems unstoppable? When the church seems to be lifeless and ineffective in reversing the cultural freefall? When our churches or families of churches seem to be declining year after year?
Or, more personally, what do you do when your child has become a prodigal and nothing seems to touch him or her? When those you love are caught up in a lifestyle of horrible immorality or gender confusion?
David Brainerd, praying in the deep winter snow until it all melts 12 hours later from his body heat, is an example of fervency. Fervency is Leonard Ravenhill habitually rising to pray in the middle of the night for hours at a time. A church in Austin, TX, is led to pray 24/7 and has maintained that schedule non-stop for almost two years—that’s fervency in prayer.
People may see these as exceptional and impractical examples because they require extraordinary commitment. Not many believers will ever pray for 12 hours in the snow. Only a few churches will dare to pray 24/7 for years. . . .
As I look back at almost 40 years in ministry, I remember times that God allowed me to experience His presence in tangible ways. Each time, it was when I was calling out to Him in fervent prayer. The best way I can describe those moments is that God pierced the temporal with the eternal. I knew without a doubt that I was in His Presence. . . .
