A Prayer for a New Start; a New Season

While playing football in college, one of my mentors was Coach Lou Holtz at Notre Dame. He had a wonderful prayer that he often shared with aspiring athletes and coaches such as myself.

Here it is. Let us pray.

"Jesus, this is the beginning of a new day. God has given me this day to use as I will. I can waste it or use it for good. But what I do today is important because I'm exchanging a day of my life for it. When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever, leaving what I have traded in its place. I want gain, not loss; good, not evil; success, not failure. I know I shall not regret the price I have paid for it, because the future is just a whole string of now! Lord, help me to live this day according to your will. Amen."

Now, let's continue to pray with some of the words that I have developed after praying this scripted prayer of Coach's years ago,

Father God, we are reminded that we are a new creation in Christ Jesus. The old patterns and mistakes are in our past. Now, today, is a fresh, clean start. Tomorrow is another day of beautiful, glorious opportunities.

This is the day you have made, O God. And we agree that today is the first day of the rest of our lives. It is a fresh new start. And if we don't have a great day of victory and overcoming, then tomorrow is a new season for us as the first day of the rest of our lives.

We pray you wipe us clean of past failures and disappointments. Break the chains of limitations and curses self-imposed or spoken by others over us. The God of hope speaks to us for a bright new day of favor and wisdom as we walk in his steps of resurrection creative power.

Sovereign God, we trust that you tell us to forget the past and advance. Today is the beginning of a new season for us. One that we enter into a season of kingdom acceleration that is no longer being bogged down by delay. We give you our ashes of conflict, rejection, disappointments, and mistakes.

In Jesus' name, release us from the chains of grudges, hatred, resentment, and depression. We forgive ourselves. We forgive others. We forgive those in authority who have hurt, disappointed, or let us down. We give you this weight of sorrow.

The God of turn-around is our God. The God of supernatural power is on our side. We trust him for kingdom acceleration of hope in every area of our lives. We have no limits in the glory realm.

Our God can do exceedingly, abundantly above all we ask or think, according to his power that works in us. Amen.

To God be the glory!
