Mark Batterson: What Happens When the Church Stops Praying?

By Mark Batterson

"I feel like prayer is the difference between the best you can do and the best God can do."

Outreach recently spoke with Mark Batterson to discuss a wide assortment of issues, including the challenges of taking the Gospel into the culture of Washington D.C., the lessons he's learned about prayer from his most recent book, The Circle Maker, and what it means to be a "current" church in our ever-changing culture. Here's a glimpse into the conversation. Check out more from our Nov/Dec issue here

What are the most important ministry lessons you’ve learned this year?

We’re not trying to grow a church, we’re trying to bless a city, and when you bless a city then God grows His church. And I think that’s gotten into our DNA over the last year. You know how you can read a verse in the Bible a thousand times, but then one day the full force of it hits you and it’s like this revelation. This little statement Jesus made, “I will build my church”… I’ve heard that a thousand times, but I think it hit me this year. My job is not to build the church. It’s a little thing, but it’s been big for me. I’ve shared that in some settings with pastors and I think it’s been real freeing. We need to remind ourselves, it’s His church—He’s the one who will build it, and if we can stay out of the way, then some great things are going to happen.

Prayer has also played a big part. I feel like prayer is the difference between the best you can do and the best God can do. So if we’re not praying, then the best we can do is the best we can do, and that’s not good enough. When we get on our knees, the Holy Spirit does the heavy lifting. Prayer creates the culture and gives people a heart for evangelism, because when you get into God’s presence, you start to get His heartbeat. That’s been the game-changer for us this year.

In your recent book, The Circle Maker, you talk about the important transformation of becoming a praying church. What does that look like for National Community?

You can delegate a lot of things, but you can’t delegate prayer. The Lord convicted me out of Acts 6—when the church leaders were delegating stuff so they could be in the Word and in prayer. I love conferences. I’m a conference junkie, but I’d rather have one God-idea than a thousand good ideas.

You can go to conferences and get a good idea, but you’re not going to get a God-idea there—you get that by being in the presence of God and getting into prayer. When The Circle Maker came out, I had this thriving personal prayer life, but I realized I hadn’t led the church corporately into that. So we started doing these 7:14 a.m. prayer meetings (based on 2 Chronicles 7:14), and I realized it was changing things.

I don’t know if it took me writing a book on prayer to realize how far short I had fallen—to kind of wake up to the reality. I felt a sense of responsibility that I better make sure I’m not just leading the way in my personal prayer life—I better be leading the way corporately.

What happens if National Community Church stops praying?

Wow! I think the very first thing that comes to mind is we would get bored. Soren Kirkegaard said boredom is kind of the ultimate sin. I don’t think you can live a Spirit-led life and be bored at the same time. So when you stop praying it takes the supernatural element out of what we’re doing and the church becomes a club. There’s no conviction of the Holy Spirit, no miracles—then the church stops being a movement and becomes a museum to what God has done in the past.

If you want God to do something new, you can’t keep doing the same old thing. You have to do something different, and I think prayer is the difference between you fighting for God and God fighting for you. So if we stop praying, we’re on our own and I don’t think we’re going to get very far. When you start praying it begins to create some of that momentum you can’t manufacture—it’s God beginning to move.

Our Gift to the "Nones"

Faith Matters Masthead
On Learning to Pray

The challenge and joy in learning to pray is that there is always more to learn. The problem in preaching about prayer, as I did last Sunday, is that there is always a lot of good material that gets left on the cutting room floor. Like this, from Eugene Peterson:

Prayer is the practice by which all that we are, all that we believe and do, is transformed into the action of the Spirit working his will in the details of our dailiness. Prayer consists in the transformation of what we do in the name of Jesus to what the Holy Spirit does in us as we follow Jesus. (Tell It Slant, p. 25)

Or this prayer from St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274):

Grant me, O Lord my God, a mind to know you, a heart to seek you, wisdom to find you, conduct pleasing to you, faithful perseverance in waiting for you, and a hope of finally embracing you. Amen.

Prayer is a lot like jazz. Jazz musicians are able to improvise because they have first learned the basics. "A Disciple's Path" offers some simple practices that can help us learn the basics so that we can improvise in finding our own pattern for prayer.

The good news is that there are lots of resources to help us along the way. "The Upper Room" is a great place to start. In the video witness in worship last Sunday, Bobby Eggleston described his use of "Pray As You Go" during his morning drive to work. My personal favorite is "A Guide to Prayer for All Who Seek God."

Whatever resources you use, John Wesley's words continue to challenge us today:

"O begin! Fix some part of every day for private exercises. You may acquire the taste which you have not: what is tedious at first, will afterwards be pleasant. Whether you like it or not, read and pray daily. It is for your life; there is no other way; else you will be a trifler all your days ... Do justice to your own soul; give it time and means to grow. Do not starve yourself any longer. Take up your cross and be a Christian altogether."

The "Nones"

A front page story in "The Tampa Tribune" reported that one-fifth of the American public - and a third of adults under 30 - now indicate "none" as their religious affiliation. The majority of the "nones" say they are "religious" or "spiritual," but they have either rejected, been burned by, or simply don't see any need for their religious or spiritual life to be practiced in community with others.

That same day, I came across an address by Peter Jensen, the Anglican Archbishop of Sydney, Australia, which described the "deadly individualism" of our time. He compared it to Frank Sinatra singing, "I Did It My Way." He called "undemanding, individualistic, homemade, sentimental spirituality" the "new religion" which "turns the human impetus to worship inward, toward the self."

So, what could be more countercultural than Scripture? The Bible simply has no place for a totally individualistic relationship with God. Biblical faith is always personal, but it is never private. It begins in the transformation of our individual lives, but it is lived out in community with others. Worship draws us together from our inherent need to be in community with others and turns our attention away from ourselves and toward God.

That's why John Wesley said, "'Holy solitaries' is a phrase no more consistent with the Gospel than holy adulterers. The Gospel of Christ knows of no religion but social, no holiness but social holiness."

This Sunday we consider our commitment to "presence" in community with one another and in corporate worship. It's the gift we have to offer to the "nones."

19 Annual Prayer Workshops

For rural Louisiana church, prayer workshop an annual source of spiritual growth, strength

Focus on prayer - Attendees pray during the 19th annual Calhoun Prayer Enrichment Workshop in Calhoun, La.

CALHOUN, LA. - For two decades, a workshop focused on prayer has drawn church members from near and far to a rural congregation just off Interstate 20.

The recent 19th annual Calhoun Prayer Enrichment Workshopattracted 100 people from 33 churches in eight states.

“Small churches can do great things if you ask God to be in it and guide you with his voice,” said Keith Roberts, the 55-member Calhoun Church of Christ’s minister for 31 years.

Roberts, author of the book “Why God Waits For You to Pray,” said the workshop began as an effort to “take prayer off the back burner and make it something that was really a part of the life of the church.”

Since 1994, a Tuesday night prayer group has helped the northeast Louisiana church keep its focus on conversing with God. About eight to 12 members meet in a different person’s home each week.

“We fellowship a little bit,” Roberts said, “but mainly, we pray.”

A sign outside the red-brick church building declares: “Need prayer? Call our prayer hotline ... or use our drive-thru prayer request box.” At various times, the congregation has prayed by name for everyone in the Calhoun phone directory. The town has a population of about 7,500.

Speakers at the recent workshop included Patrick Mead, minister for the Eastside Church of Christ in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Albert Lemmons, pastoral care minister for the Fourth Avenue Church of Christ in Franklin, Tenn.

Louvenia Williams, a member of the University Church of Christ in Monroe, La., said the workshop helps improve her prayer life.

“With the way the economy and the world is in such turmoil, we are leaning more toward prayer,” Williams said.

Like Williams, Karolyn Parsons, a member of the Airline Drive Church of Christ in Bossier City, La., said she wouldn’t dare miss the workshop.

“I found the thing that improved my prayer life and my Christian walk the most is when I started praying ... that God would keep my eyes, ears, hands and heart open to do service for others,” Parsons said. “He has put me in some interesting situations and puts many speed bumps in my way, so that I slow down and handle each one.”

Five members of the Southwest Central Church of Christ in Houston drove more than 300 miles to attend the workshop.

“This is a must-go for our prayer ministry,” pastoral care minister Steve Sandifer said.

6 Ways to Reverse a Church Decline

6 Ways to Reverse a Church Decline
"Quick-fix" formulas won't work. Here are 6 keys to stopping a church's decline.

I don’t particularly like the “quick-fix” formula some pundits offer to leaders of churches that are plateaued or experiencing a decline.

The approaches often appear to be man-centered and methodological. Indeed, many times I think the solutions offered could just as easily apply to a civic organization as they could a church.

Nevertheless, I have had the wonderful opportunity to research churches across America, as well as to have literally hundreds of conversations with church leaders in a variety of settings.

What I have learned is that many churches are plateaued or declined. Many leaders are frustrated and seeking God’s solution to the situation. And a number of churches exhibit common patterns when they break out of their numerical slump.

Allow me to share six of the more common ways I have seen churches reverse a decline.

1. They enter a time of corporate prayer and fasting.

Sometimes the period is a short duration, such as 24 hours. But in that time, many members of the body agree to pray and fast to seek God’s face for His will for His church.

In some churches, the number of members who participate is relatively small compared to the whole membership. In other situations, a large number may participate. In each case, those who do pray and fast understand only God can ultimately give the increase to a congregation. #2-6>>>

"Do Less. Pray More.  (Three Attitudes to Cultivate Intimacy with God.)"

By Michael Pfau, guest writer

(See description below.)

I was talking recently to Andy, a friend and pastor, about lessons we both have learned over the years. He summarized beautifully what we were both trying to say in the phrase, "Do less. Pray more."  This goes against my natural tendency to try and get things done, achieve results, work hard, reach goals, be an achiever, stay connected, and remain plugged in.  I'm often driven by distraction and activity.  I've come to understand that intimacy with God in our fast-paced world can happen.  God-empowered results can occur, if I approach Him with three attitudes.

First, recognize whose power really changes things

It goes against our nature to sit, wait, and rest in His great presence.  To "be still and know He is God" is not easy.  However, a desperate person knows how to pray.  When we have nothing to bring we become great pray-ers.  Our competency actually works against our awareness in prayer, and thus, prayer itself.

Spurgeon wrote, "Prayer doesn't fit us for the greater work, prayer IS the greater work." Why is this true? Because it puts the focus back on God to bring about the type of change that the most significant parts of life require.  Changing a husband's heart to choose love instead of divorce is not like changing a light bulb.  Yet I can find myself leaning on my training, knowledge, and experience rather than on prayer.  Perhaps you can identify.  This happens because our competence actually works against prayer -- the spirit of abiding and a praying life.  Remember, it is "not by might, not by power but by My Spirit, says the Lord."

You'll recall that Acts 13:2-3 mentions the activity of the prophets and teachers in the church of Antioch.  It says, "As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’ Then, having fasted and prayed and laid hands on them, they sent them away.” It was as a result of purposely setting aside time to be in God's presence that God revealed His heart and will for the church.  There is no evidence that these men were praying a particular prayer, let alone thinking of sending out a missionary team.  Instead they worshipped, fasted, and waited before the Lord, allowing Him to reveal His plan to them.

As I examine my own heart about the tendency to act more and pray less I've come to realize pride may be my motivation.  I want to figure it out on my own so I can get credit and have the spotlight on me; after all, I'm the “expert,” right? Sometimes I want God to hurry up and answer my prayer for any number of reasons.  I get tired of waiting and I step in where I should be patiently abiding.  This type of motivation steals the glory from God.  Remember, it is God's power that changes things as you rest before the Lord and discover not only what He wants to do but how He plans to accomplish it.

Second, quiet your heart

When you have your "quiet time," is it truly a QUIET time? I often wake with thoughts racing and swirling around my head.  The day's cares and details press in like storm troopers on the gate of my mind and heart, threatening to overwhelm me.  So when I go to prayer I must be intentional to still these thoughts and quiet my mind.

I've also noticed that I can be anxious while trying to pray through a matter.  My emotions are so engaged that I find it hard to hear God's voice because I'm thinking of all the ways something may or may not work out.  Let the noise and clamor cease.  We can get so caught up in the appointments that are on our calendar, projects that need our attention, people issues that seem like they will swallow up our life, that there is no room for our hearts and minds to hear God's still, small voice.

One wonderful remedy I've found is to start out in praise and worship of our sovereign, holy, all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-present God.  He is the Wonderful Counselor, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.  He created the universe and desires to commune with us.  "Be still and know He is God." Once it is fixed in my heart just Who I am encountering, my soul gets settled.  I'm able to relax and enjoy His great presence.

Third, recognize that God actually likes spending time with you

We misunderstand our relationship with God when we think that our time with Him is one-directional and only for our benefit. Sure, we are to receive from God.  "In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore" (Psalm 16:11). "Taste and see that the Lord is good, blessed is the man who puts his trust in Him" (Psalm 34:8).

Yet, did you ever stop to think that God actually enjoys the time you set aside to be in His presence? Remember, He created Adam and Eve and walked with them in the garden.  Surely these were times of reciprocal delight between Creator and creation.  Psalm 149:4 states, "For the LORD takes pleasure in His people; He will beautify the humble with salvation."  Zephaniah 3:17 says, “The LORD your God in your midst, the Mighty One will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”

So how do we actually receive His love and pleasure? We start by recognizing that spending time with God is not like hanging out with friends.  It usually takes time to develop the "Spirit eyes and ears" needed to connect with Him.  At first it can feel awkward and contrived and even like we are making it up.  However, like any new endeavor, if we give intentional effort and have a strategy, the sense of His delight will come.  This may sound like work, and initially it could feel that way.  Yet, the more we still our hearts, rest in His presence, and just open our souls to receive from and give to the Lord -- the more we will learn to walk with Him throughout the day and find joy beyond what any other relationship can give.

My hope and prayer for you is that by doing less and praying more you will find an ever-deepening dependence and intimacy with God.

The Prayer that Changes ME

Prayers That Change ME

Has there been a life-changing prayer somewhere along the way in your journey? Gordon MacDonald describes the recurring prayer that has changed his life.

Perhaps you've heard of it—the Serenity Prayer. It's often associated with Alcoholics Anonymous. But as Gordon reveals, it's not just for alcoholics. You'll appreciate The Prayer That Changes ME

If prayer is more about aligning our life with God, rather than trying to get God to do our bidding, then Gordon's account will help you pray ever more effectively.

Prayer Format: Fullness

Prayer again last night yielded a 'run' on thoughts geared to FULLNESS.

1. Fullness of God and all His attributes.  How exhausting this is to not be able to comprehend all His attributes of their fullness!  And that God is complete in all of them.  A truly mesmerizing, thought provoking, heart searching, mind yielding to how great is our God, the Lord God Almighty.

2. Fullness of time - for us time is complete, whether our lifetime, or generations or the whole of time since God stepped out and said, 'Let time begin.'  Fullness of 400 years for Israel to be in Egypt; fullness of 70 years the land had rest while the captives were away at Babylon; fullness of each dispensation of law, grace, church. God has all this in His hands.

3.  Fullness of creation - of His people, purpose, and all that is found in the earth that He created; He knows each stone, each water drop, each snow flake, each animal, He knows the fullness of all HIs creation.  In us as His people, He has our fullness in His hand and thoughts, He knows how many hairs we have, how many breaths we take, the intents of our hearts, the actions of our lives, our words, He knows all for all 7 billion souls on the earth.  Thsi is the fullness of God's omnipresence, and omnipotence.

4.  Fullness of Your ways, O God - complete, perfect in all fullness for His glory.  Consider again attributes and aspects of who He is.  Fullness in holy, perfection, entire in all ways of salvation, redemption, santicfication, justification, glorificeation.

5.  Fullness of being filled with the Spirit - 'Be ye not drunk with wine, wherein is excess, but be filled with the Spirit of God.'  And they souls in the upper room were filled on the day of Pentecost.  It is necessary and needful for us to understand this, seek for it, find it and walk with Him in it.

6.  Fullness of the cup of wrath - each sin, each actions taken by men against God, puts another drop of indignation in the cup of His wrath.  And when that cup is full, He pours His retribution upon the souls of the wicked.  I often think while I am in prayer, that if the sin of a nation, people, family, or myself, or His church, puts drops into the cup; how much our prayers and intercession take drops out as we seek His mercy, forgiveness and cleansing.  But if no souls are seeking His forgiveness, then no drops are taken out, and it fills up that much faster.  You think your prayers of confession have no merit?   Think again, on the cup of wrath and what happens when it is full.

7.  Fullness of the earth - filled with His glory; Glorify Thy Name in all the earth.  Every aspect, as in the creation emphasis, we see that this earth is the Lord's and the fullnes thereof.

until,

National Prayer Plans Prompt HOPE and GDOP London Partnership
HOPE and GDOP London Working Together to Call the UK Church to Pray

By Peter Wooding
Europe Bureau Chief for ASSIST News Service

LONDON, ENGLAND (ANS) -- The national mission movement HOPE is working with Church leaders of all denominations, calling the whole Church to be part of a national weekend of prayer and fasting -- All Praying Together from 7-9 September.

Global Day of Prayer London is bringing Christians together for the National Day of Prayer and Worship at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 29 September.

Roy Crowne, HOPE's executive director, said: 'Plans for the All Praying Together weekend began at the HOPE Leaders' Forum in 2011 when Pastor Agu of Jesus House called for united prayer and fasting for the nation. When we heard about plans for the National Day of Prayer and Worship at Wembley, it seemed natural to link the two. We must be listening to the same Holy Spirit; prayer seems to be on God's agenda for the Church at this time.

'All Praying Together is for everyone - individuals and churches, fasting and praying where they are; the National Day of Prayer and Worship brings people together in one place. HOPE's vision is that churches will be doing more mission together, in words and actions, and using key moments in the Christian calendar to build a rhythm of mission. But we know that effective mission is built on a rock of prayer, and without prayer our greatest efforts have little effect or meaning.

'HOPE is delighted to partner with GDOP London on this; let's be praying as well as responding to needs in our villages, towns and cities.'

HOPE has released a range of All Praying Together resources, contributed by partners in various denominations and ministries to make sure that Christians of every age and worship style can join this movement of prayer.

The All Praying Together video encourages churches to get involved.
At summer youth festivals thousands of teenagers are being encouraged to play their PART - (Pray, Abstain, and Reach out Together), taking a lead in All Praying Together and at the National Day of Prayer in Wembley. HOPE's PART card reminds young people to pray, fast, and share hope through words and actions in their community.

It Seems to Me . . . PDF Print E-mail
. . . surf's up and we better catch a wave!

The birth of Prayer Connect is just one of many signs that the prayer movement is heating up once again. Every ministry or movement that lasts for more than a few years invariably experiences ups and downs, fruitful seasons and dry times. Devoted followers experience both joy and disappointment; dedicated leaders endure both exhilaration and exhaustion. For a time we ebb and then we flow.
Sometimes the wave crests quickly; new conferences or gatherings filled with crowds that just as quickly disappear from view. A brief roller coaster ride,  Other times a high or low point may extend into years or decades.

Researching the history of the Prayer Evangelism movement that exploded across the 1990s for Prayer Connect magazine helped me appreciate what was accomplished in that time period but also revealed signs of looks like a reemergence to me.

In the final decade of the last century, a foundation was laid that we are now widely revisiting and building upon. Many denominations rediscovered the role of prayer in the later part of the 20th century and now we are seeing pastors who have discovered Acts 6:4 and are eager to minister both the Word and prayer. Prayer is no longer on the sideline. Pray! Magazine gave visibility and vocabulary to the unfolding prayer movement and now Prayer Connect has taken the baton with a fresh legs. Benefiting from the lessons learned during the 1.0 days of the Internet, Pray! Network is just one of a variety of Internet sites involving leaders and laity in discussing insights and issues related to prayer evangelism and dozens of other important topics.

From the ground-breaking, scripture-based, global-covering Seek God for the City, we may now have 30- or 40-day prayer initiatives. Each one unique, giving a slightly different slice of the Church access to community impacting and culture influencing praying.

The fact that you know of many examples I've left out or am completely unaware of is further proof. We are in a recurrence and that resurgence must not be taken for granted nor squandered. Every praying believer must stoke this Holy Spirit lit fire and steward those we are responsible to disciple with opportunities to experience dynamic corporate prayer, prayer evangelism, and so many other prayerful expressions. If we have learned anything, it must be to ride the wave of the Holy Spirit. We cannot create it nor control it. We must be instant in season.

So, take another look at the resources of this network. Reconsider attending a Church Prayer Leaders Network training conference. Select the Prayer Evangelism or Women in the Prayer-Care-Share Movement Affinity Consultation at the Denver 2012 Leadership Consultation . Involve your prayer team in Awakening America or OneCry . Pull out that dog-eared copy of Prayer Evangelism orPrayerwalking or Love to Pray and stand again on a solid foundation.

Because it seems to me, surf's up and we better catch a wave!
