In recent years, I have chosen to have a focused prayer time at the beginning of the service. Following a time of announcements and greeting, I believe it is necessary to direct people's attention to the Person, God, who constitutes our whole purpose for being in that setting. I ask for a time of silent meditation and reflection on the sovereign God of all things. I invite people to come to the altar area as a step of greater commitment and involvement. I typically ask God to be our worship leader because He knows best what will honor Him.
I also add a pastoral prayer prior to the message asking the Holy Spirit of God to illumine our hearts and minds with understanding of His word.
