In Praise of an Imperfect Patriot
A poetic tribute to Charles Colson
From Watergate to Heaven's Gate,
a Hatchet Man reborn
found prison fellowship firsthand
and weathered Nixon's storm.
His breakpoint was God's saving grace
that gripped this felon's heart
and moved him to embrace the truth
that marked our nation's start.
Chuck Colson taught us loving God
means more than voicing faith.
He called us to be salt and light
resisting culture's bait.
Confronting lies, defending life
and claiming liberties
were Charles Colson's triune goals
protecting you and me.

Loving God was my favorite Colson book. It really spoke to me about what it means to give "feet to your faith." His first book (Born Again) chronicles his Watergate crimes, imprisonment and personal conversion. I read Born Again in July 1976. God used that little book in a profound way to help me surrender to a call to pastoral ministry from which I was running. Archives of his daily radio commentary (BREAKPOINT) are worth listening to online.
