 Beyond Prayer
The Romans built the most advanced system of roads the world had ever known, but that doesn’t mean travel was easy in New Testament times. Roman roads were built for military purposes, not comfort, and travelers either had to make their way by foot or, for the fortunate few, horse-drawn carriage. These ancient vehicles were rudimentary by modern standards, rough riding and certainly slow moving. A journey that today you might take in several hours by car would then have taken days or weeks. Then there were the roadside inns—notoriously dangerous and filthy, run by unscrupulous and shady characters.
With that in mind, read today’s scripture again. The apostle Paul took at least three missionary journeys – embracing the hazards of travel to visit and help his Christian brothers and sisters. Praying for them, he decided, was just the start.
As you pray for your leaders, your loved ones and your friends in America today, make your prayer the beginning, not the end, of your involvement. What else are you willing to do, what sacrifices are you willing to make, and where are you fearlessly willing to go…to make a difference for Him? Recommended Reading: Psalm 91:1-11
