New England Alliance         September 2 2013

Seek God with us September 4-14!   This Wednesday, 10 Days begins across New England and across the country. Here's some important and timely info on 10 Days, as well as some encouragement!   An Exhortation: Seek God with Us! 10 Days is a time for the Body of Christ to come together, but also a time to draw near to God as individuals.  From the evening of Sept 4 through the evening of Sept 14, we encourage you to: Enter into a fast: This could be a Daniel fast, Juice Fast, or a Water Fast.  We encourage you to also fast from entertainment during this time. Come and pray when you can: Make this a season of seeking God for yourself personally, in partnership with believers around the region and the nation. See locations elsewhere in the country. Find the schedule for 10 Days Bostonhere and in the next article. Encouragements  One encouragement this week has been seeing how God is bringing people together in many cities. Take a look at the "City Schedules" at 10days.net to get a glimpse of what's going on around the nation.On the East Coast, there are regional 10 Day Gatherings in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Boston, Manchester, NH, the Pioneer Valley, the North Shore (Beverly-Salem Area) and Long Island. 10 Days is also happening in 5 cities on the West Coast. Return to the Northfield Campus    Some of you will remember that the first 10 Day gatherings in 2007 took place at the Northfield Campus, a place well-known as the burial site of D.L. Moody and the point of origin for the Student Volunteer Movement.  This year, the current owners (National Christian Foundation) have opened up Northfield again for 10 Days.  The 10 Days in Western MA will be based at the Northfield Campus. Kansas City 10 Days!?   Several weeks ago, I was in Kansas City.  As part of the trip, I was sharing vision for 10 Days with several people throughout the city, hopeful that next year, KC might join with us. Earlier this week, a Kansas City lawyer contacted me. He now leads a global orphan ministry and has been having some amazing experiences with God. The bottom line: he is calling for a special season of prayer from Sept. 4-14, with special gatherings on Sept. 5 and Sept 14.  He had absolutely no knowledge of what was happening in other places during those same dates. Unity - John 17  Pastor Mike McBride   I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. (John 17:20-21)   Unity is hard. Pride and ambition make us impatient with others. Difficult issues are often easier to avoid in the short-term. Even the Apostles experienced difficulty in unity (Acts 15:39). We all experience the difficulty of unity in all kinds of situations. But unity is worthwhile, even useful in the work of the gospel.  Did you notice the purpose of Christian unity according to Jesus' prayer? Jesus is not simply praying for unity for unity's sake. The very structure of the sentence communicates a purpose. Jesus is asking the Father to do one thing so that, or in order that, this other thing will happen. He prays, give them unity, so that "the world may believe that you sent me." Christian unity is not simply for the peace of the church as it stands now, but for the purpose of witnessing to the world that Jesus is the Messiah sent from the Father. Despite the example of the disagreement between Paul and  ​Barnabas in Acts 15, the Apostles demonstrated a remarkable unity despite their diverse backgrounds: Peter commends Paul's teaching (2 Peter 3:15), they engage difficult theological issues and come to agreement (Acts 11 and 15), and they proclaim the gospel with amazing consistency. And the world took notice.   But how did they do it? Well, they had a great model. Jesus prayed 'may [they] be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you'. God the Father, Son (and Holy Spirit) have the perfect relationship with one another - always acting out of concern for the others, never jealous or envious of the others, and always satisfied by the love of the others. This is true unity, the type of unity Jesus wants for his disciples. But notice that Jesus did not simply pray for his disciples to follow God's model. Instead he prayed that his disciples would be drawn into their perfect relationship, to experience the unity of the Holy Trinity itself. And when that happened, people noticed.
