Here is the sermon handout from this last Sunday 10 14 2012; preached by our pastor (Ken Goodban), at Lake Almanor Community Church. However you are leaning for this election (I hope it is towards Romney), we still need to be praying for our leaders and our country - now more than ever!!!! And don't forget to vote Nov. 6
Blessings, Larry Lendrick
ps - pray especially for this next Monday's debate - third and last, and for the Lord's will to be done
GOD AND GOVERNMENT
The TOP 3 Christian Responsibilities to our Government
Rom.13:1-7
“Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished. For the authorities do not strike fear in people who are doing right, but in those who are doing wrong. Would you like to live without fear of the authorities? Do what is right, and they will honor you. The authorities are God’s servants, sent for your good. But if you are doing wrong, of course you should be afraid, for they have the power to punish you. They are God’s servants, sent for the very purpose of punishing those who do what is wrong. So you must submit to them, not only to avoid punishment, but also to keep a clear conscience. Pay your taxes, too, for these same reasons. For government workers need to be paid. They are serving God in what they do. Give to everyone what you owe them: Pay your taxes and government fees to those who collect them, and give respect and honor to those who are in authority.”
Romans 13:1-7 NLT
1. TRUST God as Ruler over All (I Chron. 29:12)
“Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God.” Rom.13:1 NLT
“The king’s heart is like a stream of water directed by the Lord; He guides it wherever he pleases.” Prov.21:1 NLT
2. OBEY God’s Authority over You.
“So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished… The authorities are God’s servants, sent for your good.” Rom.13:2, 4 NLT
• Obey the laws
• Pay your taxes
• Leverage your influence – vote, serve, etc
• I Peter 2:13, 14; Matt. 5:13
3. PRAY Hard for God’s Salvation.
“I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. For there is only one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus.” 1Timothy 2:1-5 NLT
SMALL GROUP APPLICATION QUESTIONS:
1. How “political” are you and what is your current attitude toward our Government?
2. READ Rom.13:1-7 and 1Timothy 2:1-5. What are the main challenges to you as a follower of Christ from these Scriptures? How are you doing with this?
3. How are you doing with trusting God as Ruler of all in your life right now? (spiritually, politically, economically, etc)
4. How do the words “obedience” and “submission” characterize your life right now? Any growth points?
5. In what way does1Tim.2:1-5 challenge your prayer life?
