Engaging Your Group in Prayer

Phil Miglioratti

Planning for a consult...

Give them the imagery of a symphony Orchestra.

When we pray, we each bring our own instrument to the concert.

A “concert” of prayer describes praying together, in harmony.

Concert means together.

  • together; decided, certain

The Holy Spirit is the conductor.

  • A.S.K.
  • ASK… Begin with questions

Holy Scripture is the score.

  • SEEK… prayer prompts in scripture
  • Pray a scripture passage (several verses; not a chapter)

Everyone has something to contribute.

  • KNOCK… Some of us have very loud instruments, some make soft sounds like a flute, stringed instruments evoke various emotions, a trumpet gets everyone’s attention…
  • And some prefer to play the triangle (triangle is not played continuously during the concert, but when it is sounded it catches everyone’s ear). An expression of joy. A reminder to recenter or return to our main focus.
  • Some like to play/sing solos…as you I vote people to pray, indicate a simple verbal cue you will use to remind them to allow others to participate.
  • Some need a specific invitation: “Anyone else who has a prayer we need to hear so we can agree in our hearts with you?”

Post-Prayer

  • Ask for feedback: “What did you experience? How did the Spirit speak to you?”
  • Share an insight of how the group prayed in concert
