By Cathy Cryer - Ahwatukee
The National Day of Prayer is one of my favorite times to pray because it offers the opportunity to join in united prayer with people across the U.S. for our nation, her culture, and her leaders at all levels from federal to local. Since God calls us all to do that anyway – all the time – and Scripture shows us how powerful the prayer is when it is united with many praying at once, it thrills me to be able to join in every May. For Central’s Ahwatukee Campus this year, it meant several opportunities to participate. AND, from Ahwatukee, NDP even went global! First, just one week before NDP, Ahwatukee hosted a night of worship and prayer for the Women’s Ministry. About 200 women from all our campuses joined together that night. Many took home with them a tent stake embossed with Scripture passages that they promised to use in prayer for our country on NDP Thursday. They agreed to “Stake a Claim for Jesus” wherever they “planted” the stake: at home, work, a favorite hiking path, the kids’ school, their grocery store parking lot…wherever. Secondly, we offered a time and place for prayer at 7 pm the evening of National Day of Prayer. We started in the Prayer Room for a cozy time of prayer, but we grew to a group of 14 and had to move into a larger space. Our attendees were mainly from our Ahwatukee campus, but we were joined by prayerful friends from two other congregations as well. They found our location on the National Day of Prayer website, where all our campus prayer offerings for the day were listed. The privilege was praying in unity with brothers and sisters beyond Central’s attendees, joining locally in a way that echoed what was happening around the nation. Our prayers focused on concerns for the military, education, business, government, media, churches, and families of America, not just for ourselves and our nation, which followed the National Day of Prayer theme this year, “For Your (God’s) Great Name’s Sake!” Participants took tent pegs with them to “Stake a Claim for Jesus” wherever they went that night or through the weekend. Among them were a prayerful husband and wife team who were headed to Central Europe. They took three extra tent pegs for prayer in the three countries they were about to visit. Even as I write, the couple texted me that they have just prayed and Staked their first Claim for Jesus in Prague! |

By Kurt Stromberg - Mesa
Up until this year I had not participated in an event on the actual National Day of Prayer, so this time spent with 30+ other brothers and sisters was special. The energy was fantastic, but had a sense of purpose. That purpose of course, was prayer. It was great to see some familiar faces and it was even better to meet a couple of prayer warriors from other churches. We said a quick hello and then Paul explained the meaning of the stakes that were handed out. We placed stakes in the corner of the property, praying over the street and the six closest homes. We were challenged to get to know our six neighbors by the book, The Art of Neighboring written by Jay Pathak and Dave Runyon. We then got busy praying over the church, the government, our families, the family’s relationship with the educational system and our brave warriors who have served and are currently serving. Overall, an amazing experience and I look forward to next year’s National Day of Prayer gathering at Central. |

"If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14 What a privilege it is to have the freedom in a nation that has dedicated a “National Day of Prayer.” May our hearts turn from wicked ways and toward God to heal our land. Attendees at the Gilbert Campus called by His name, were humbled, prayed and sought His face in the early morning hours of National Day of Prayer. It was less about the coffee and more about the prayer! It was the early morning commuter and the mom with children who chose to walk the campus in prayer as a wonderful witness of prayer to her two young children. Dozens of tent stakes were taken to “Stake a Claim for Jesus”. One woman shared that her Life Group took the scripture on the tent stakes, read them as they prayed His word back to Him and then put the stakes around their community where they hope to see many other stakes. If you want to read more about NDP, check out thisarticle. |

By Jerry Burke - Queen Creek
Queen Creek celebrated National Day of Prayer by setting up a prayer station underneath a tent on our new property. It was open from 7 am until 7 pm. That evening, about 30 people showed up to attend “Stake Your Claim for Jesus”. One visitor who came to our campus looking for a building, but not a tent, brought her Shofar (musical ram’s horn) and gave a few of us who were there a demonstration. Our campus pastor, Duane Boyett, brought his guitar and opened up a mini service, leading us in worship by singing “Holy Spirit” and “How Great is Our God”. Jerry Burke read part of an article explaining sanctification. Everyone participated in a reading of John 17. Each individual was given a verse from John 17 and they each read their verse aloud in order, so the group heard the entire chapter. Jerry then said a prayer asking God to transform the land into a different kind of farm where His love would be sown, nurtured, grown, and harvested – sending ripples of His Kingdom throughout the community. At the end of this service, council members and life group leaders led four groups of people to each corner of the property where they prayed and claimed the land in Jesus’ name, symbolically driving the stakes into the hard, hard ground. Many people took stakes home to do the same thing. I’d like to note that one person, Dee Goodban, was there almost the entire 12+ hours. She helped set things up, brought decorations for the prayer station, manned the station for 8 long, hot hours by herself, and helped pack things up at the end. As hot as it was, I don’t know how she managed it but she did, and she did it with a smile on her face all day. She is such a trooper. Thanks Paul, for coming up with this idea. The Queen Creek campus is beginning a transition period and this gave us the opportunity to sanctify and consecrate the land and ourselves to God’s purposes and will. It was a great day. |

By Mike Fleming - Glendale
We had a prayer workshop at our Glendale campus on May 28th. We discussed quite a few topics. Like, What is the point of prayer when God knows the future and is already in control of everything? If we cannot change God's mind, why should we pray? We want to help you explore what prayer is — and what it isn’t. And as we explore how God designed prayer and modeled it for us through Jesus, we can understand how to better approach this conversation with a holy and loving God. It was a great time together to learn and grow. I hope to see you at the next one. |

By Paul Covert and Kim Butts
Praying the scripture is a wonderful and powerful way to pray. My friend Kim Butts wrote this great piece entitled 27 REASONS TO PRAY THE WORD OF GOD. I think you will enjoy it. Praying Scripture is powerful and effective because: 1. Jesus is the Word. (John 1:1-2, 14) 2. It is the example of Jesus. (Matthew 4:1-11) 3. It is the example of the early Church. (Book of Acts; Acts 4:23-31) 4. His Word is His will. (Timothy 3:16-17)
- Scripture teaches us to know and fulfill God’s will. (John 5:14-15)
- Scripture teaches us God’s will for His Kingdom (knowing what is on God’s heart). (John 6:38, John 14:10, John 13:34-35, 1 Timothy 2:1-4, Matthew 9:37-38, John 17:20-26)
- Scripture teaches God’s will for our place in His Kingdom. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-17, Philippians 2:13, Isaiah 30:21, Isaiah 48:17, Psalm 86:11, Psalm 119:105, Romans 12:2)
5. God’s Word allows us to pray the blessings and purposes of God for ourselves and others. (1 Timothy 4:12, Numbers 6:24-26, 2 Thessalonians 3:5, 16; Romans 15:13, 2 Corinthians 13:14, 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17) 6. Praying the Word gives us confidence and power in our prayer. (John 15:7, Matthew 21:22, 1 John 5:14-15) 7. The Word of God gives us a beautiful, full, rich vocabulary of prayer. (Psalm 145 and the rest of the book of Psalms) 8. The Word of God helps us to keep our prayer lives fresh and exciting. (Hebrews 4:12, John 15:7) 9. The word of God is flawless. (Psalm 12:6, Psalm 18:30) 10. The Word of God will stand forever. (Luke 21:33, 1 Peter 1:25, Psalm 119:89) 11. Praying the Word of God helps us to develop an intimate relationship with Him and a desire to know Him better. (Psalm 63:1-8) 12. His Word reminds us to stay focused upon Him in prayer. (Psalm 141:8a, 2 Chronicles 20:12c) 13. Praying the Word, which is the sword of the Spirit, gives us authority to stand against the enemy. (Ephesians 6:10-18, Psalm 44:5, Psalm 8:2) 14. Praying the Word of God and hearing it prayed, builds our faith in God’s ability to hear and answer. (Romans 10:17, James 5:15) 15. Praying the Word of God allows the Holy Spirit to work in and through us. (Ephesians 6:17, John 14:26) 16. Praying the Word of God gives us an expression of confession for our sinful natures. (Luke 18:13) 17. Praying the Word of God protects us from sin. (Psalm 119:11) 18. Praying the Word helps us to pray about our own obedience to the Word. (Psalm 119:33-37, James 1:22) 19. Praying the Word out loud brings blessings when we obey what we hear. (Luke 11:28) 20. His Word will always accomplish what He desires. (Isaiah 55:11) 21. The promises of His Word encourage and uplift us. (Joshua 1:5, Jeremiah 29:11-13) 22. Praying God’s Word is powerful because it is the TRUTH. (John 17:17, John 8:31-32, Psalm 33:4, Ephesians 1:13) 23. It pleases the heart of God to respond to prayers that delight Him, and we know that His Word gives Him pleasure. (1 John 3:21-22) 24. The boldness of praying the Word strengthens our witness to unbelievers. (1 Peter 2:15) 25. Praying the Word helps us to stand on a firm foundation. (Luke 6:47-48) 26. Praying the Word of God helps us to receive all that God has created with thankfulness and to set these things apart as holy. (1 Timothy 4:4-5, Psalm 33:6, 1 Chronicles 16:23-36) 27. We should pray Scripture SO THAT God is honored and glorified. (John 11:4, John 14:13, Psalm 145:10-12). |

School of Prayer
Reaches an All-Time Record
Wow! What a School of Prayer! One hundred and eighty seven people crowded into the Outback for the fall School of Prayer in Gilbert, Sunday, September 22. This is a record attendance for a School of Prayer and displays a desire by many to learn to pray better.
Here's what people who participated said:
"It was awesome!"
"Thanks for inviting other churches!"
"I feel so much stronger in prayer."
"Can you do these more often?"
"I never knew you could have prayer and fun in the same sentence."
Time Alone with God?
Jesus, Moses, and countless others have in the Bible set aside time to be alone with God. They did so because they believed that it was valuable.
Mark 1:35 says "Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed." Have you set aside a special time in which you set out to seek God in prayer at a specific time and has God made Himself known to you in ways you didn't expect?
In our culture we sometimes feel like prayer is a luxury that we would love to take part in if we just had the time. Here is your chance and the weather is perfect.

Join Creative Team For 24-7 This Year
Each year, the design team for the 24-7 Live Prayer Room expands in diversity and scope!
Last year, for the first time, a Life Group designed one of the 10 stations in the 24-7 Live Prayer Room. They enjoyed it so much, they are back again this year -- along with several more Life Groups, several individuals and couples design teams, and a group of teens joining forces with two adults to design a station.
"We know the kids are the future of the church," said Rick Safriet, who with his wife, Linda, also designed a station for last year's prayer room. "When we asked the kids who come to serve at Central's ACTS (homeless) Ministry, they were eager to help and get involved. And they wanted to learn more about prayer, too."
Rick and Linda let the kids take the lead, and the station they claimed as theirs out of the 10 possibilities taken from 1 Peter, not surprisingly, already had been titled, "Serve Others." It is from 1 Peter 4:10-11a.
As all station designers do, they read the passage, bounced ideas around about what they could do to help lead people into prayer about the passage and make it interactive, interesting, and memorable.
This year's 24-7 Live Prayer Room will move to all five campuses at one time or another between Saturday, Nov. 2, and Monday, Nov. 11. Check out Central's web site for exact times and places and follow this link to register for one hour to pray www.CentralAZ.com/247 . Read More Here.
Returns to Central to Speak at the
Elevate Prayer Conference in February 2014
Mark Batterson has become one of the most innovative American writers on the subject of prayer. He will return to Central Christian Church to speak at the Elevate Prayer Conference.
His books have inspired many to have a more intimate and deeper prayer life. If you go on Facebook, you'll find 18,794 likes for Batterson's book The Circle Maker, and if you go on Twitter, he has 76,595 followers that follow what he tweets. It wasn't always this way for Mark Batterson though. Before becoming the Lead Pastor of National Community Church in Washington D.C. and authoring multiple best-selling books that include The Circle Maker, Batterson was raised in Naperville, Illinois, an affluent suburb of Chicago that has remnants of a once quaint farming town. He attended theUniversity of Chicago on a scholarship he earned playing basketball and had his sights set on majoring in pre-law. That was of course until 1989, when Batterson's life would turn in a completely different direction.
He wasn't knocked off a horse with a bolt of lightning like the Apostle Paul, and he didn't hear a gentle whisper like the Prophet Elijah. On the contrary, Batterson was on a prayer walk through a cow pasture when he felt the call to enter into full time ministry. After earning a Bachelor's degree fromCentral Bible College in Springfield, Missouri and two Master Degrees from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Chicago, Illinois, Batterson would settle down with his wife Lora and three children on Capitol Hill in 1994. He went on to pastor at National Community Church in 1996, one of the most visible churches in the Washington D.C. Metro Area.
Since then he has written several books like In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day, Wild Goose Chase, Primal: A Quest for the Lost Soul of Christianity and his most recent book,The Circle Maker, a New York Times Bestseller.
Don't miss this incredible speaker at the Elevate Prayer Conference on February 7, 2014. Registration is coming soon!
Threshold: Transformational Prayer,
Transformational Prayer Ministry
Is Now a Reality
It's taken two years of hard work, but Paul Covert's book is finally finished. Read what people who have had a chance to preview it are already saying about Threshold: Transformational Prayer, Transformational Prayer Leadership:
"What is the biggest component missing from the church these days? Vision? Passion? Commitment? Nope! What's missing most is "Prayer"! Prayer is something most of us believe in far beyond our practice. For the past ten years, Paul Covert has led our church to become passionate about praying. Not talking about praying, but praying. On this subject, Paul is both an expert and a champion. If you want your prayer life to light up and to ignite your church in prayer, this book is a must-read. Far more than mere theory, this book will give you the practical steps that will lead to genuine transformation."
-Cal Jernigan, Senior Pastor, Central Christian Church of Arizona.
"What would happen if the church became the prayer force that God designed it to be? We would seeexplosive changes as the power of heaven invades the circumstances of earth. Paul Covert offers us a guide that is both practical and reverent. Everything in it flows from his years of experience. I hear it all the time: 'How can I get my congregation, orSunday School class, or small group to understand and practice prayer?' This is what you have been asking for."
- Jennifer Kennedy Dean, Executive Director of the Praying Life Foundation and Author of "A Praying Life."
Paul's book will be available soon at Central Gear, Amazon, and Kindle. Please pray that God uses it for His kingdom.
If you're feeling a little clueless about what or who Ironman is, you're not alone. For months I'd heard about this opportunity to get involved with this ministry at Central but wasn't exactly sure what to expect. So I began to research it and uncovered this potent Bible verse along the way, "As Iron sharpens Iron, so one man sharpens another" (Proverbs 27:17). From what I read, Ironman brings together men from life groups to study the Bible and encourages each of them to challenge one another to fulfill the mission of the church. I conjured up images in my head about the kind of men that would be considered "Ironmen". No disrespect, but the guys I've seen walking into church everySunday look just like me and not what I envisioned Ironmen to be. I thought Ironmen would be more like Conan the Barbarian, Maximus from Gladiator, or William Wallace of Braveheart. So I decided I needed to actually "see" these Ironmen for myself.
Who Attends? Simply put, MEN! They are husbands, fathers, grandfathers; single, married, or in a relationship. They're just GUYS!
When Do They Meet? 6:30 a.m. on Wednesdays in Gilbert and 6:30 a.m. Thursdays in Mesa. It might be easier to go off to work that early, but you will know you've found the right place when you scan the parking lot and see 75 to 100 vehicles, mostly trucks and SUV's. Just do it. Read More Here.

Our Prayer Conference Speaker
By Cathy Cryer, Associate Prayer Pastor at Central
Looking for Christmas ideas for special people on your list? Who would have thought the guest speaker for our next Elevate Prayer Conference Friday, Feb. 7, would have some great ideas for you?
Mark Batterson, author of "The Circle Maker," "Draw the Circle," and "Praying Circles Around Your Children," will speak to us in February about prayer and bringing it powerfully alive to bear on our loved ones and circumstances, culture and community.
But he also offered some great, practical, prayerful gift suggestions as I read through all three books. His purposeful approach to prayer in all of life -- even in gifting -- is why I encourage all Prayer Newsletter readers to save the date now and plan on hearing what he has to tell us in person on
Feb. 7!
In the meantime, however, I'll share a few ideas that really struck me for some special people in my life come Christmas. See if you have special people on your list who just might find these ideas perfect under their tree! Read more here.

Time Alone with God
Moments at Ahwatukee
Mark 1:35 says "Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed." Have you set aside a special time in which you set out to seek God in prayer at a specific time and has God made Himself known to you in ways you didn't expect? Time Alone with God is just such a special time and can have a lasting impression on participants. Well, recently Pastor Corey Bullock of Central's Ahwatukee campus, was able to share his experiences at a Time Alone with God event in Ahwatukee. Here's what he wrote:

I recently spent a morning with a group that went out for a half day of prayer through Time Alone with God. It was one of the hardest things I have done in a long time. My mind wandered. I found myself repeating things that I had already said. I was restless and wanted to be anywhere besides wrestling with prayer. I have often prided myself in my capacity. I am able to get a lot done and typically work best in an environment where I have time constraints or tasks that require me to do lots at once. However, I have found that being still is much more difficult in this society than doing much. Emptying oneself is a greater challenge than the ability to multitask. For me it really comes down to productivity. My greatest fear is that I will be ineffective and unproductive, so I keep busy to make sure that this won't happen. Somewhere along this path I bought into a lie.
"If I am busy and getting stuff done, then I am productive."
What if, however, the most productive thing I could do was to pray? I love how E.M. Bounds gives a picture of men who grasped this concept.
"God to them was the center of attraction, and prayer was the path that led to God. These men prayed not occasionally, not a little at regular or at odd times; but they so prayed that their prayers entered into and shaped their characters; they so prayed as to affect their own lives and the lives of others; they so prayed as to make the history of the church and influence the current of the times. They spent much time in prayer, not because they marked the shadow on the dial or the hands on the clock, but because it was to them so momentous and engaging a business that they could scarcely give over."

My Perspective on the 2014 Prayer Conference
By Paul Covert
Alone With God In The Desert
"O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is..." (KJV)
These are David's words to God from Psalm 63:1 when he was in the desert of Edom seeking to be refreshed by God.
What can the true Christian do in the earliest morning hour but devote himself to prayer to the God of all creation. Only He can help us awaken each morning to righteousness. But our daily routines can hinder us from time spent alone with God in prayer and contemplation. If your normal routine has gotten in the way, then this option may be for you.
Coming up on March 8th you'll have a chance to join us:

Life Coaching Series 3 of 3
By Kevin Sieling
Late in October, Paul Covert approached me and asked if I would be interested in doing Called to Obedience (CTO). I think he realized quickly he was talking to a skeptical guy, but he assured me that it would be a very personalized ministry where I would be partnered with a Life Coach who would help me walk on a journey to develop a greater love for God. Paul reassured me that CTO would present a clear path, as well as some tools and guidance to help me implement various biblical principles in my daily life. Paul is a pretty astute guy. He obviously saw a need or a desire in me to undertake this journey. We began the first week of November and now it's already February. One hundred days have passed and I honestly need to give Paul some major kudos. Not only was he correct in his initial perception of my need, he was keenly aware of the type of Life Coach I would need to feel comfortable with, to open up to, and my hope, to develop a friendship for life.
CTO has provided a very practical application of biblical truth, a truth that should be lived out in our relationship with God and others. As suggested, our time together has helped me discover areas where I have made excuses to not live out the gospel and hinder my obedience to biblical principles.

April 19 & 20, 2014: Easter Intercession Breakthrough
How do breakthroughs happen? According to Mathew 7:7, it has to do with asking, seeking and knocking. Asking God, seeking God and knocking until God opens up a door of mercy are the means for obtaining what we need from God according to His will.
Praying for breakthroughs in the lives of others is also His will. We can find strength and support in each other as we pray for God to move in our lives. Christ himself intercedes for us and when two or three are gathered in His name, He is there in the midst (Matthew 18:23).
What if 300 were gathered in the name of Jesus to intercede?
Wouldn't that be a powerful time of prayer?
300 For Easter is a bold vision for what the brethren can do in intercession at the Easter services on April 19 & 20 at all Central campuses.
Join us to intercede for those attending Easter services. Come by yourself, with a friend, your spouse, your life group or your family. Registration is coming soon! Come practice what you've learned.

300 For Easter
Do you know that one of the largest churches in the 1800's was in London England? The pastor was Charles Spurgeon. Each Sunday they had 10,000 people for worship, but what is most interesting to me is that 1000 people were in the basement praying for those in the service. If you were to ask him, Spurgeon would say, "The power for his services came from God and prayers of the people willing to sacrificially prayer for others."
As you know people will be attending our Easter Services this year who do not know Christ or do not have a regular church home. Because we see these services as vital we have a goal to get 300 people to pray for those services!
What could "we" accomplish together in Prayer? Would you consider being one of those people to attend an Easter Service and then pray during one of the services for those who will be attending who don't yet know Christ?

School of Prayer:
Inspires Next Steps In Prayer
We received lots of positive responses from our School of Prayer. This time we had our Campus Prayer Leaders do some of the teaching. So we weren't sure how that would go because we have had some big name people in recently like Mark Batterson and Andrew from Africa. But we were pleasantly surprised how well everyone responded to our leaders. It just goes to show that prayer is carried by some wonderful servant leaders.
We also had several nearby churches that came learn from the teaching and to learn how to do a school of prayer. We are so thankful to have some part in advancing the Kingdom.
What is the best kind of Prayer?
I think I know the answer. It is what I call "organic" prayer. This is prayer that starts up just because people have a desire to pray and not because there is a program in place. It is simply organic. We are beginning to see that happen at Central.
We heard the story of two ladies who are committed to praying each Thursday on the campus. They walk throughout the facilities at Central and pray for the work that is being done on the campus before their Bible study.

National Day Of Prayer:
One Voice United In Prayer
Jesus once said "where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them" (Matthew 18:20).
Imagine what would happen if "millions" gathered together across America to pray in Jesus name. What kind of transformation would occur as they gather together and humble themselves before Him to pray?
Every year, the National Day of Prayer illustrates just that as God's people unite in prayer across the United States to call upon God to turn us from our wicked ways and turn this nation back to Him. Imagine how it would glorify His Name with millions in a mighty circle of prayer to call upon God to penetrate and destroy every stronghold in this nation as well as in us.
It was by faith that the Israelites walked in circles around the city for seven days and with a united voice shouted until the walls of Jericho came crumbling down.
Come gather with millions of others during the National Day of Prayer on May 1st and with one voice unite together in prayer.

Threshold Intensive A Big Success
By Paul Covert
This past week pastors and prayer leaders from Canada, Oklahoma, and the West Valley gathered for five days to talk/consult on prayer and prayer ministry.
The days were full, but it went by fast because we were blessed to have several guest speakers. Some of those included Cal, who described what it is like to have a prayer pastor on staff and our interaction. Samson Dunn, one of the pastors who took the Threshold Intensive the last time we offered it, came from an inner city church in Maryvale to speak at the event. I like to say that Samson "drank the Kool aid." He went back to his church and totally revamped the place elevating prayer to a more important position in ministry. With just that one change the church went from 800 to 1500 in the past two years. It has been so cool to watch God work there.
We had Campus Prayer leaders, the head of our Prayer Partner Ministry as well as leaders from our Service Intercession Ministry all describing their positions and answering their questions. It was fabulous.

New Ahwatukee Prayer Room
Takes Team Work And Prayer
To put together a meaningful, tasteful, inviting, functional, within-budget prayer room in a strip-mall-setting-turned-church-site takes team work and lots of prayer...and a couple miracles. And the new Ahwatukee campus site was blessed with all that and more.
Transformation was needed for the room that had been used for child care prior to Central's acquiring the space to become our newest Prayer Room. When the Ahwatukee Prayer Team got it, there were still 3-D coconuts and monkeys on the walls!
After painting and removal of the coconuts, Cathy Cryer, associate Prayer Pastor in Ahwatukee, was charged with getting the room pulled together. She gathered some things from the previous inhabitants that might be useful in decorating the new Prayer Room, and then went shopping.

Former Diamondback Shea Hillenbrand
Visits E-Men's Dinner
By Don WalkerWe had an E-Men's Accountability Group quarterly dinner at Central Christian Church's Mesa Campus on Monday evening. This is a group that provides support for one another in prayer and Bible study. As a group, we encourage one another to pray daily for God's guidance and to pray at least monthly for our neighborhood and do intercessory prayer. We also hold one another accountable for exercise and prayer with our wives (or significant other).
Paul Covert leads the group and develops themes for our quarterly meetings. He invited Shea Hillenbrand to come and speak to our group for this meeting. For those of you that don't follow baseball, Shea Hillenbrand was a major league baseball player for seven years. He played for several different teams and was a first baseman for our Diamondbacks at one time. Shea had a goal as a young Little League baseball player to become a Major League player. He dedicated his life to making this happen.
A U.S. Soldier Shares Prayer Circles In Afghanistan
A U.S. soldier stationed in Kandahar, Afghanistan shared another soldier's testimony in an email to his mother in the states. It is an account of the power of prayer that started with a simple exchange of the book by Mark Batterson called the "Circle Maker."

"Troy,
Things are so wonderful these last few days. I made it homeon Friday, and surprised Daniel after school. The circle maker book has been extremely wonderful and I've been covering my wife and our son in constant prayer...."

Accountability Groups
Helping each other to stay pure and faithful in our walks of faith with Him and praying for each other's struggles are ways members of an "accountability group" keep each other accountable to acting in a holy way.
The E-men's and E-Women's Accountability Groups at Central Christian Church report to each other and try to help each member submit every part of their life to God's will.
They each work on the disciplines of daily prayer, Bible study, praying for their spouse, exercising, reading, and praying for their neighbors. An accountability group can act as a safeguard to overcome sins and behaviors that are out of obedience to God. If one starts to go down a wayward path, the others help to re-direct their focus back to God.
As each one commits to this accountability group and to continually submit their daily lives to Christ, God helps them to mature in their walk with Christ.

24 Seven Prayer Impact Grows!
by Paul Covert and Cathy Cryer
24 Seven Prayer closed for the final time this year on the Glendale campus Saturday, Nov. 16, and the numbers and comments showed a dramatic increase in participation and impact this year over last year:
Participation at all levels, from people serving to people praying, jumped on all campuses. But numbers, though certainly impressive this year, do not tell the whole story. What God did with people who devoted one hour with Him in prayer is another story! To see the rest of the story click here.
A Christmas Prayer
An article by Mark Galli, writer for Christianity Today December 22, 2011.
We like the shepherds in the field, like the woman at the tomb, are astonished, trembling in wonder and in fear.
When family and friends gather at our home for Christmas or Thanksgiving, I compose a prayer for the occasion. It usually coincides with themes that are engaging me at the moment. Here is what I plan to pray this Christmas day:
Time Alone With God In The Desert:
Jesus, Our Model
by Jasmine Faccone
In the cooler months, the Prayer Ministry gathers together anyone willing to pray in the desert.
Jesus modeled this same practice for us in the Bible from time to time as He "withdrew to lonely places and prayed." (Luke5:16) He would've been alone, away from the crowds who had witnessed His healings and preaching. This may have been an opportunity for Him to have some privacy and devotional time to God in prayer in the solitude of the desert landscape.
Often times, when we meet God in prayer, it is accompanied by thoughts of the day's agenda and the woes to accomplish many goals. But Christ offers us this example to come to God almost in secret, away from others and quietly offering prayers to God that are personal. Praise be to God that we have a Father in Heaven who sees us in secret. (Matthew 6:4) And by His own example, Christ encourages us to likewise withdraw to the lonely places and seek God, because we have much more to bring to God in prayer than He who did not sin. (Hebrews 4:15) Let us not forget that Christ, as God, is our example and mediator to whom we can address our prayers and petitions, and can sympathize with our weaknesses. (Hebrews 4:15)
Well, on Saturday, December 13th, you will have an opportunity to spend Time Alone With God in the desert in Mesa.
Where: Usery Pass in Mesa
When: Saturday, December 13
Time: Meet no later than 7 a.m. in the West parking lot of the Mesa Campus if you want to carpool with us in a church van (entrance fees are charged per car).
Can I drive myself?: Yes! Just meet us at 7:30 a.m. at the entrance of the park and be prepared to cover the $6 dollar per car fee.

Life Coaching:
In Search Of The Truth
Are there things in your life that are hindering your obedience to God? Have you been making decisions that frequently affect your good conscience toward God? Is there a pattern of behavior that you recognize should be yielded to the power of God in your life?
These are significant questions every believer should ask themselves when fear, pride and desires to control their own life or the lives of others are consistently motivating them to make decisions apart from God.
The world is a very distracting place and living in daily surrender often gets hampered by issues in our hearts that are undealt with. Everyone's personal journey is different and experiencing God intimately requires an intentional step to ask God to reveal those sinful areas in our lives that are continually diluting our perspective of what sin is and that keep us from facing the truth in ourselves.
Life Coaching is offered through the Prayer Ministry at Central and involves an examination into one's own life and perspective of God, Christ and the Gospel. We utilize studies from "Called to Obedience", a ministry that provides a Bible based discipleship program designed to encourage believers to have an ongoing relationship with God in Christ and have the right view of God and His Gospel, as well as apply tools that through God's Holy Spirit call attention to several areas of sin including, roots of bitterness, fear, pride, un-forgiveness, and desires to control.

Once again, Central will host a gathering later this month of the National Prayer Leaders from across the country. In return for our hospitality, they will tackle your tough questions about prayer!
Something's been nagging at you about prayer? Wonder about that unanswered prayer? Have you questioned why sometimes it feels like you are talking to the ceiling, when your friend seems to have a direct pipeline to answered prayers? Is it best to sound like King James English when you pray?
Consider any and all prayer questions you have and bring them with you to the Tough Questions Prayer Event in Gilbert beginning at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, January 29.
The answers will be served up prayerfully, and with an espresso bar, from a panel of Prayer Leaders who serve as Directors of Prayer or lead Prayer Ministries of various kinds. Their leadership takes many forms from pastoring, to praying for celebrities in Hollywood, to speaking and teaching on prayer, writing books or devotionals for prayer, to driving mobile units around the nation praying for national concerns, etc.
They all have a heart for prayer and have many years of experience in many venues from which to draw their answers for you.
When they met here at Central the first time several years ago, we offered a similar night open to questions from members and guests. It was a vibrant night of discussion, considering the power of prayer the Lord has gifted us with. You won't want to miss this new opportunity!
More information about the event will be provided via an email blast to you and from announcements at worship services very soon. Watch for them and save the date!
