Our responsibility for the poor and the persecuted...

Today an unprecedented number of Christians are suffering persecution. According to U.S. government statistics, Christians in more than 60 countries face persecution from their governments or surrounding neighbors simply because of their belief in Jesus Christ. At the same time members of other religious minorities are also experiencing displacement and persecution. These brothers and sisters, as well as, non-Christians who are persecuted need our prayers, support and the support of our government and other international agencies.  Christian Churches Together has released a pastoral letter which emphasizes the commitment of American Christians to pray and advocate for those being persecuted. We invite you to read this letter, to pray and to commit to doing something for your persecuted brothers and sisters.  On the other hand, not too far from you, there are Americans who are struggling to make ends meet. Most of them are hard-working people who are desperately trying to get their heads above water. It appears as if our economy has left them behind. Many of them depend on some government assistance to supplement thier finances. Others simply have reached a point in their lives where because of age or health struggles, can't work. As people of the gospel, we care for these our brothers and sisters. We believe that Jesus clearly calls his followers to provide for the needs of the "least of these" as if we are doing it to Jesus himself.  For the last 10 years, the communions/organizations in Christian Churches Together have been raising their collective voice in the public arena and in the halls of Congress in support of a strong and concerted efforts to address hunger and poverty. Many believe that current economic policies, if enacted by Congress, will put at risk the lives of million of Americans living in poverty. Thus, Christian Churches Together calls all Christians to pray and fast for the U.S. Congress, as they consider the priorities of our nation.  We invite you to read the pastoral letter and the call to fast. As you read we hope the Holy Spirit may impress your heart on how you can get involved on these important issues.

CCT Pastoral Letter to Persecuted Churches

We greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. We write to you as Christians living in the United States where we do not face immediate danger of persecution and martyrdom in living our faith as do you. We write as Christians troubled not only by the persecution of our fellow believers and other religious communities, but also by the attempts of some seeking to eradicate Christian communities in what can only be named genocide. We write as Christians conscious in the midst of our confessional diversity, seeking to heed more faithfully the teachings of our Lord and the exhortation of Saint Paul in a perfect manner.  Read full letter here...
