Crime in our city is at a 30-year low. Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper said: "We have had tremendous success reducing crime in the city, primarily due to our hardworking personnel and increased community partnerships. Having the honor of announcing the lowest crime numbers in decades speaks to the vision, revitalization efforts, and commitment of our key stakeholders." That's something to celebrate!! The prayers and actions of God's people are working.
We're very excited about some upcoming opportunities for you to influence our city with the Gospel of the King. I encourage you to fully engage in these missional activities!
Held on the U.S. National Day of Prayer, The Mayors' Prayer Breakfast is a regional event that brings the community of faith together on this momentous day. The event was founded on a belief that God responds when his people pray.
In 1964 the first Birmingham Mayors' Prayer Breakfast was sponsored by a small group of local businessman who met weekly to pray for a city being torn apart by racial tension. The initial speaker was Bobby Richardson, star second baseman of the New York Yankees. Since that first meeting the honoree list has been greatly broadened, whereby now the Mayors of all Jefferson and Shelby County municipalities (over 40) are invited, plus several in adjoining counties. The goal is to encourage righteous leadership from each Mayor's office and to foster greater cooperation in the Birmingham region. Now fifty years later, Birmingham still needs the prayers of its people.
The tickets are $25.00 per person and $200.00 for a table of eight (8).
The Birmingham Benevolence Network is a resource for churches and ministries in the Birmingham area who are seeking to alleviate poverty and care for those in need. This tool is not a panacea but a way to open lines of communication and foster relationships among churches and ministries. With this in mind, a couple local pastors started the Network in hopes of seeing greater cooperation and lasting transformation in our community through the Church.
Using a private blog, cooperating ministries share basic information about people who approach them for assistance. In doing so, we aim to identify people who are taking advantage of us, but we also seek to work together in assisting people with greater needs. Our goal in all of this is to make sure we're truly helping people in Christ's name and not hurting them or ourselves. This happens as we provide holistic, sustainable assistance to people with legitimate needs.
