A Place for Personal Prayer

A prayer room is a place you enter, where you can focus on God and spiritual growth, temperately appropriate, equipped and supplied. The goal is a secret and private place to pray, away from the distractions and interruptions of life.
A prayer room needs to be comfortable and welcoming. While it is a place created specifically for prayer, it can also be a place for study as well. It is a place to pray, to worship, to listen and to be taught in the presence of Almighty God. Choosing a place that is quieter and is available on a daily and regular basis is a top consideration. Maybe you have only a closet or a corner. Maybe you have a space that has to
be used for something other than prayer at a different time.
Here are tips for what you might want to place in your prayer space.
  • Maps of the world for mission praying. Particularly, maps which detail the nations yet to be reached with the gospel.
  • Missionary enterprises. Mission causes.
  • Missionaries for whom you feel called to pray. Gather their pictures, if possible.
  • Maps of the US – to pray for specific cities of America to see a revival and a great awakening.
  • Lists of national/state/county/city officials who need prayer!
  • A map of your city/county. Note the location of schools and even churches. Mark areas that are prone to high crime. Begin your own “spiritual mapping” project. Make the map a study of the city you live in and for which you have been called to intercede.
  • Family pictures as reminders to pray for children and grandchildren – and beyond them, for great-grandchildren.
  • Pictures or paintings that inspire prayer and intercession.
  • Prayer helps and guides.
  • Books on prayer, the devotional life, various translations of the Bible.
  • Carpet that invites prostration.
  • An altar for kneeling.
  • Space for prostration before God.
  • A chair for seasons of waiting.
  • Notepads to write and record insights.
  • The capacity to dim the lights.
  • The capacity for worshipful music, when desired.
