In the interest of full disclosure, I am a BIG John Piper fan. This book, FOR THE FAME OF GOD'S NAME, is a collection of relatively brief and easy to read essays by those John has mentored, inspired, challenged, and taught. Covering some of Piper's favorite subjects such as the sovereignty of God, prayer, preaching, etc. each essay is a standalone. Collectively, it is an amazing group of teachings, thought-provoking, and inspiring at the same time. Reading, I find myself highlight, making notes, whispering prayers, and proclaiming other affirmations that, "yeah, that is how I feel/think."

John Piper is an extraordinary pastor, Bible expositor, writer, and theologian. Not everyone will agree with everything he writes. But, you will be a better, stronger, more thoughtful Christian for having read his words, noodled through their application (or not) to your own life, and for having taken the time to THINK (another Piper theme/book).

Over 500 pages in length, this book will last for several days/weeks of enjoyment. There are sections on John Piper himself, his concept of "Christian Hedonism" (both for and against), the sovereignty of God, the Gospel/Cross and Resurrection of Christ, the Supremacy of God in ALL things, Preaching and Pastoral care, and information about Piper's ministries - DESIRING GOD and BETHLEHEM INSTITUTE.

Two of my favorite essays were C.J. Mahaney's THE PASTOR AND THE TRINITY and R. Albert Mohler, Jr.'s A GOD-CENTERED WORLDVIEW: Recovering the Christian Mind by Rediscovering the Master Narrative of the Bible.

I definitely give this a "TWO THUMBS UP" rating. It will become a treasured tome in your collection and will NOT collect dust-bunnies. However, you will need to buy yourself a couple of highlighters. It is THAT good!

  • John Piper is a blessing to the body of Christ. He cuts through denominational barriers without compromising the essential truths of Scripture.
  • Charles, I fully agree. I don't want to put anyone on a pedestal but John certainly represents someone who by his life not just his words has proven he BELIEVES!
