Church Unity (Post 8/7/2018)

Unity-Love-and-Colossians.png?width=600

I have spent a lot of time writing on #ChurchUnity lately. The post below can be found at MarkMirza.com

Demonstration of Unity

I have been spending a lot of time with the book of Colossians. Because book 2 of my current novel series, (which I just finished this week, YIPPEE!!!) includes a major section that centers around the ancient city of Colossae (you can find book 1 HERE).

I was up late last night rereading the beginning of Colossians and it struck me that Paul says, “hello” to so many of his churches by telling them how much and how often he and his entourage thank the Lord for them.

Love in the Colossae Church

And though I have read it dozens and dozens of times over these this last few months. It struck me how this view of Love in the Colossae Church must differ from ours in the 21st century Church.

Now I recognize that I am painting churches with one broad brush and that is unfair. I give that to you and I apologize if am wrong about your church, which I know I will be.

Love For All the Saints

But I started thinking about many, many of the people that I pray with and I recognized that I see Love For All the Saints in Jerry and Todd, and in the 3 Davids, in Lew and Derrick and Tony.

Love For All the Saints is evident in Bryan and Greg and Aaron and Bryant.

There is Love For All the Saints in Tom and in Bennett, in Brandon and Ben and Marc, in Jerry and Vince and Victor.

I also see Love For All the Saints in Roger and Eugene, in Don in Craig and in John and Reed.

I even see Love For All the Saints in the women that I pray with on these conference calls.

They all pray!

Now you need to realize, these men and women come from all over the economic landscape and the spiritual maturity landscape. They come from all over the theological landscape, and, God forbid, the political landscape.

And it took me only half a second to realize what the common denominator was and is, in every single one of them. Surely you know what that common denominator is, don’t you?

They all pray!

The Colossae Leader Prayed

DON’T think I’m writing ONLY TO PASTORS!

Are you a leader in your home, with your siblings, at work, when you are alone and by yourself?

This message is to ALL OF US!

Is it any wonder that Epaphras who played an important role in the Colossae church (Colossians 1:7a) before he went to Paul’s side, is known and remained known as a man of Prayer (Colossians 4:12-13)?

Whose Fault is Dis-Unity

PS. You may want to stop reading this. Continue at your own risk. . .

There is a reason we do not have unity in the church . . . And it is our fault.

It’s not the fault of those that we believe are wrong in their thinking. It’s not the fault of those who won’t change “no matter how much we pray” that they do change.

I believe the problem is in us, the ones who won’t pray that we would love others unconditionally.

Love them when they see the light and get their act together? Absolutely!

But humbly come before the Lord and ask Him to fix me because I don’t like somebody, with a righteous dislike of course! Absolutely No Way!

What’s the Cost

Why don’t we have #ChurchUnity?

I believe the reason we do not have #ChurchUnity is because it is too costly. And we, the ones who “claim we want” unity are, for the most part, unwilling to pay the price.

Imagine what #ChurchUnity means. It means that I have to engage with, “those other people.”

Scripture and Unity

Romans chapter 15 verse 5 (Mark’s paraphrase) May the God of endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves, as you follow Christ.

You want unity? It’s the other guy’s responsibility, right?

Not at all. You want unity? It’s on you, not them.

John chapter 17 verse 21 (again, Mark’s paraphrase) The way they will know that I came from the Father has nothing to do with your ability to parse doctrine, how you baptize, how you pray or how you vote. The way they will know that I came from the Father is if you have unity. By the way that was Jesus speaking.

The next time you talk about unity in the church, would you ask yourself if you’re willing to pay the price to be united with those that you vigorously disagree with?

Blessings,

The God of Peace

What do all of these bullets below have in common?

  • You need direction
  • Someone near you needs direction in their life
  • You are confused
  • You have no peace

ANSWER: The God of peace (1 Corinthians 14:33) has the answer.

Lack of Peace is an Answer

And remember that if you DO NOT HAVE PEACE, this is also an answer.

You may call it a “check in your spirit.”

Until you have peace, you do not move forward.

No Peace, No Move!

Blessings My Friends,

Praying James 5:10-11

Beginning with the month of May, we began praying The Book of James on the Ranger Joe’s God and Country Show .

James 5:10-11

10 As an example, brethren, of suffering and patience, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 We count those blessed who endured. You have heard of the endurance of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord’s dealings, that the Lord is full of compassion and is merciful.

Today's Prayer

Lord, thank You for the examples of saints who have suffered with patience. Thank You for the example of Job, and the outcome in his life that came from You. Forgive us Father, as a nation and as Your church, especially in the West, for thinking that when difficulties come our way we should NOT be experiencing them. Lord, cause us to thank You for them, for they are Your will for our life (1 Thessalonians 5:18) and cause us Lord to be very compassionate and merciful, just as You are with us. And cause us Lord to accept what You bring our way. In the Name of Your Son, who suffered with great patience, amen.

Psalm 119:49-56

Emphasis                 Your words are my songs

Today’s Prayer

Lord, Your words, wherever I am at in this tent, in this body, are my songs (Psalm 119:54). Lord, there is so much talk of singing in Your word, but in this nation, and in Your church, we fight over the type of music to be sung. Father forgive us for allowing those attitudes, and instead cause us to  sing of Your love, Your justice, praise to You (Psalm 101:1), Your ways and Your great glory (Psalm 138:5).

Praying James 5:9

Beginning with the month of May, we began praying The Book of James on the Ranger Joe’s God and Country Show .

James 5:9

Do not complain, brethren, against one another, so that you yourselves may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing right at the door.

Today's Prayer

Oh Father, You have seen fit in this book, and even in this chapter, to address the issue of us judging others, more than once. Father, forgive us as a nation, and as Your church, for not heeding Your word. We judge, when in fact the Judge, You, is standing at the door. Father, cause us to love unconditionally, without our needing to judge. In the Name of Your Son, who will judge us all, amen.

Psalm 119:41-48

Emphasis                 There is Liberty in Your word

Today’s Prayer

Father, we cry aloud for liberty in our country. We think we have liberty in our churches. We look for liberty in our relationships, but Lord, the only true liberty is in Your precepts (Psalm 119:45). Lord we have many teachers that are like the prophets of old who would dress needs, wounds, mortal wounds, as if they were not serious, saying “Peace, peace!” when there is no peace (Jeremiah 6:14). Father, forgive us for desiring that “liberty” that comes from hearing what our itching ears want to hear (2 Timothy 4:3). We know this only leads to guides, to teachers who mislead us (Isaiah 9:16) and blind guides that lead us into pits, Oh Father, give us liberty by giving us the grace to turn from them, these blind guides (Matthew 15:14).

Psalm 119:33-40

Emphasis                 You incline my heart

Today’s Prayer

Lord, this emphasis reminds me that there is such a dependence upon You. And Lord, even as I put Your instructions into practice (Psalm 119:34) I trust You to incline my heart to Your testimonies, and to turn my eyes from worthless things (Psalm 119:37). Lord forgive us as a nation, and members of Your body, the church, because we have forsaken Your word which You set before us. We have not obeyed or followed it (Jeremiah 9:13). Forgive us Lord and cause us to abandon our shameful ways by following Your word (Psalm 119:39).

Praying James 5:7-8

Beginning with the month of May, we began praying The Book of James on the Ranger Joe’s God and Country Show .

James 5:7-8

7Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains. 8You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.

Today's Prayer

Father, we are so grateful that the coming of Your Son is near, but often Lord, we are impatient. Lord forgive us, as a nation and as Your church, for worrying, rather than having the patience of a farmer. Lord we know that You are the one who brings precious fruit, both out of the ground, and out of our lives, when we but wait upon You. Cause our hearts to be strengthened Lord, as Your Son's return draws near. In His name, the name of the One whose coming is soon, amen.

Psalm 119:25-32

Emphasis                 You remove false ways from me

Today’s Prayer

Father, Your word tells us that the whole world is under the control of the evil one (John 8:44). Thank You for Your Holy Spirit who teaches us, speaks to us, and reminds us of the things that Your Son has said (John 14:26, 16:13). Lord, we know that satan often comes as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14), and that we, in this nation and in Your church, have fallen for his deceptions. Lord, we need You to remove his false ways, his deception from us by graciously giving us the knowledge and understanding of Your word (Psalm 119:29).

Praying James 5:1-6

Beginning with the month of May, we began praying The Book of James on the Ranger Joe’s God and Country Show .

Please note that these prayers are NOT A DIATRIBE AGAINST our government
It is a wake-up call to the Christians of the sin in OUR LIFE!

I believe the problems we are experiencing are the USA are the result of
God judging US, Christians, NOT the non-Christians!

Their time will come...these problems are on us,
which means we need to repent!

Like Greg Frizzell likes to say, the problem isn't that we need more pray-ers.
The problem is in us, the pray-ers.

James 5:1-6

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries which are coming upon you. Your riches have rotted and your garments have become moth-eaten. Your gold and your silver have rusted; and their rust will be a witness against you and will consume your flesh like fire. It is in the last days that you have stored up your treasure! Behold, the pay of the laborers who mowed your fields, and which has been withheld by you, cries out against you; and the outcry of those who did the harvesting has reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. You have lived luxuriously on the earth and led a life of wanton pleasure; you have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. You have condemned and put to death the righteous man; he does not resist you.

Today's Prayer

Oh Lord, whether we are rich or not, we can let wealth ruin us. Lord, when our only fruit is corrosion in our lives, our life and our flesh is a witness against us. Thank You Lord that Your ears hear the cries of the ones we harm by our actions. Forgive us Father, as a nation and as Your church, for fattening our hearts, when our hearts are deceptively wicked, and the reality is that no one can know them, our heart (Jeremiah 17:9). Lord, cause us to weep and wail over miseries that are coming to us, as a nation and as Your church. In the Name of Your Son, the One who saves us in the midst of our trials, amen.

Why Do We Pray A.C.T.S.?

I just posted this blog on my website. I used a form of writing that R. A. Torrey used in his book "Studies in the Life and Teachings of our Lord" where for 346 pages, nearly every sentence is a question. Brilliantly done.

I'm no R. A. Torrey, but it was very fun to write this way. Let me know your thoughts, both on the questioning process, but also on how it helped, or distracted you?

Blessings, and enjoy:

Psalm 119:17-24

Emphasis                 You open my eyes to Your word

Today’s Prayer

Oh Lord, we trust You, and You alone to show us wonderful truths, to open our eyes (Psalm 119:18), so we trust You Father, to give us a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of You. Lord we trust You to open the eyes of our heart that we might be enlightened enough to know the hope of Your calling on our life. And Lord, as You open our eyes, we trust You to show us the glorious riches of Your Son’s inheritance, that we can participate in, here, on earth, among the saints, not just when we get to heaven. And then finally Father, as we ask for forgiveness and humble ourselves, as a nation, and as Your church, show us the immeasurable greatness of Your power, in us, simply because we are believers, Your children (Ephesians 1:17-19)

Praying James 4:13-17

Beginning with the month of May, we began praying The Book of James on the Ranger Joe’s God and Country Show .

James 4:13-17

13Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.” 14Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. 15Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.” 16But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil. 17Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.

Today's Prayer

Oh Father, we brag in so many ways. We have convinced ourselves that bragging, and calling it planning is not sin. Father, we don't know what tomorrow holds for us. Forgive us Lord, as a nation and  Your church, for boasting in our arrogance, it is evil. Lord,  As we submit to You in this area please teach us what is good to do, giving us the grace to do it. In the Name of Your perfect Son, amen.

Praying James 4:11-12

Beginning with the month of May, we began praying The Book of James on the Ranger Joe’s God and Country Show .

James 4:11-12

11Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. 12There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?

Today's Prayer

Father, we thank You that You are sovereign, that You are a just God, that You are the one who saves, and that You are the One who judges. Forgive us Father, as a nation and as Your church for thinking that we have the right to judge our brothers. Cause us Lord to not criticize our brothers. In the Name of Your Son, the One who died for us, amen

Psalm 119:9-16

Emphasis                 Reflecting on Your ways

Today’s Prayer

Father, the very act of memorizing scripture causes us to meditate on Your precepts which then moves us to reflect on Your ways (Psalm 119:15). Forgive us Father, as a nation and as Your church, for losing the art of meditating. Lord may we focus on those things which are true and honorable, right and pure, lovely and admirable, only the excellent and praiseworthy things Father, do we want to delight in (Philippians 4:8). In so doing Lord, we know that You will not allow us to forget Your word (Psalm 119:16).

Praying James 4:4-10

Beginning with the month of May, we began praying The Book of James on the Ranger Joe’s God and Country Show .

James 4:4-10

New American Standard Bible (NASB)

4You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5Or do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: “He jealously desires the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us”? 6But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.” 7Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. 10Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.

Today's Prayer

Lord, thank You for being so clear, You want us to be humble, not friends with the world. You want us to have clean hands and a pure heart, not be double minded. Father, forgive us as a nation and as Your church for focusing on throwing a celebration, when You are calling for brokenness. Father, cause us to realize that dealing with the evil one BEGINS with submitting to You. In the Name of Your Son, the One who submitted completely to You, even going to the cross, amen.

Psalm 119:1-8

Emphasis                 Walking in Your paths, Your law, Lord

Today’s Prayer

Lord, when we think of “Walking in Your paths, in Your Law” (Psalm 119:3) we are reminded of “abiding” in You. And so Father, we abide in You, we continue in You, we walk in Your laws because we know that when we see You, we will be confident and unashamed (1 John 2:28). Lord, the writers of scripture wrote, so that we would not sin, but we praise You Father, that when we do sin, we have an advocate with You, Your Son. He is the One who, out of Your love for us, gave up His own life, not only for us but for the entire world (1 John 2:1). Lord, that is love, Father, that is unconditional love, that He died even for those who will not turn to Him. Forgive us, as a nation, and as Your church, for not loving unconditionally, and show us Lord, how to love like that, for Your word tells us that love is the fulfillment of the law (Romans 13:10).
