Psalm 22:1-2
To the choirmaster: according to The Doe of the Dawn. A Psalm of David. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? (2) O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest.

Lord, I cannot comprehend the depth and agony of Your separation from the Father. There is nothing in my life that gives me any clue to understanding this. I can accept it, I can believe it, I can act upon the truth of it but I cannot understand it. And while You love me, it was obedience to Your Father's will that brought You here. Cost was not a consideration.

And so for me, lesson 1 is that I must be obedient to the Father's will and to Yours. Cost is not a consideration. I must dedicate my all to You.

Voices Together is taken from my daily meditations and is shared in the hope that others will be encouraged to use the Psalms as a basis for their own prayers, It is available in other formats including a daily e-mail, as a weekly bulletin insert for churches and for use in prison ministry, and published as an annual devotional.

Psalm 119:59
When I think on my ways, I turn my feet to your testimonies;

When I think on my ways -- I need to examine the direction in which I am going in the light of Your testimonies. Am I walking according to the Word of the Lord? Am I honoring You with all my heart, soul, mind and strength? Am I loving my neighbor? Your testimonies will tell me. Your Holy Spirit will convict me and lead me onto that Way which is according to Your Word.

Psalm 21:13
Be exalted, O LORD, in your strength! We will sing and praise your power.

You are the Lord of Glory, the Mighty One, the Lord of Heaven and earth, You are from everlasting to everlasting, without beginning and without end, without equal, LORD God Almighty.

Psalm 21:8-12
Your hand will find out all your enemies; your right hand will find out those who hate you. You will make them as a blazing oven when you appear. The LORD will swallow them up in his wrath, and fire will consume them. You will destroy their descendants from the earth, and their offspring from among the children of man. Though they plan evil against you, though they devise mischief, they will not succeed. For you will put them to flight; you will aim at their faces with your bows.

Your word provides a clear delineation between those who love You and those who hate You. It is a clearly marked path of obedience to Your Word, with either side being lives of misery and suffering but the path is one of light and love. Lord, I lift up each one known to me who is not on that path, praying that the eyes of their heart will be opened to the beauty of Your Word.

Psalm 21:3-7
For you meet him with rich blessings; you set a crown of fine gold upon his head. He asked life of you; you gave it to him, length of days forever and ever. His glory is great through your salvation; splendor and majesty you bestow on him. For you make him most blessed forever; you make him glad with the joy of your presence. For the king trusts in the LORD, and through the steadfast love of the Most High he shall not be moved.

Lord, You are delivering me from my enemies. From lust, greed, pride, self-will, stubbornness, sloth, and others. One at a time, slowly putting me through tests and trials to mature my faith and to make me into an example of Your transforming power. Praise You, my Lord and my Master.

Psalm 21:1-2

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. O LORD, in your strength the king rejoices, and in your salvation how greatly he exults! You have given him his heart's desire and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah

You, O Lord, You are answering my prayers to draw nearer and nearer to you. You do not withhold my pleas to know You and to become one with You. You not only are answering my heart's desire, You are the one who placed that desire within my heart. Praise You and thank You, my Lord and my Master.

Psalm 20:6-9
Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed; he will answer him from his holy heaven with the saving might of his right hand. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God. They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand upright. O LORD, save the king! May he answer us when we call.

For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. (4) For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. (5) We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, 2 Corinthians 10:3-5

I am armed, equipped and trained as one of Your soldiers. I am sent to do your calling. I have Your battle plan before me. I have Your saints at my side. I cannot be defeated so long as I seek You and Your righteousness before all other goals and considerations. I trust in Your name, the LORD God Almighty. Praise You, my Lord and my Master.

Psalm 20:5
May we shout for joy over your salvation, and in the name of our God set up our banners! May the LORD fulfill all your petitions!

Lord, the joy is from being in Your presence, that sense of completion that comes from know You. A pervasive sense of wellbeing, that You are in control, that I have nothing to fear, and that Your love pours over me. This is joy, pure joy, unalloyed joy, ever present joy, joy without end, Your peace that passes all understanding. Praise You and lift up Your name among the congregation.

Psalm 119:50
This is my comfort in my affliction, that your promise gives me life.

Word is to hope as comfort is to affliction and as promise is to life. Each pairing is composed of a gift from You that results in a blessing to me. Your word provides the hope of glory both realized now and to come; Your comfort brings release from affliction in the here and now and in the yet to come; and Your promise is for life everlasting in Your presence.

Psalm 20:1-4
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. May the LORD answer you in the day of trouble! May the name of the God of Jacob protect you! May he send you help from the sanctuary and give you support from Zion! May he remember all your offerings and regard with favor your burnt sacrifices! Selah May he grant you your heart's desire and fulfill all your plans!

Lord, my problem is not that You are not present for me in times of distress and troubles, but it is that I am so wrapped up in resolving whatever it is that is troubling me, that I do not turn to You, wait for You, rely on You. I need to accept that You are ever present, always, always, always at my side and a cover over me. What a precious promise in John 14:2, that if it were not so, You would not have told me that it was. Your promises are yes and amen!

Psalm 19:14
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.

Lord, guide me into acceptable words and condition of my heart. Help me to meditate upon You so that my heart will be transformed into a place where You are welcome and where Your Holy Spirit finds joy and love; a place where You are the Primacy; a place where "my Lord and my Master" is a complete and fulfilled acknowledgment of Your dominion.

Psalm 19:12-13
Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults. Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me! Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression.

How can I discern my errors? Only as they are revealed by Your word; there is no other tertium quid to serve as a reliable and complete guide to my errors. The law, which once served to reveal to me the need for a savior, now serves to lead me in being obedient to that Savior and to living in a way that brings glory and honor to His name.

Psalm 19:7-11
The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.

The Word of the Lord is:
  • Perfect
  • Sure
  • Right
  • Pure
  • Clean
  • True
  • Desirous
Praise You, Lord, for You have provided the ne plus ultra of gifts to Your people, through them I am:
  • Revived
  • Made wise
  • Filled with joy
  • Enlightened
  • Cleansed
  • Made righteous
  • Had my hunger sated and my thirst slaked.
Praise You, my Lord.

Psalm 19:1-6
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat.

Another day is breaking, a cold, crisp winter day, and I can watch the interplay of light and color as Your creation is revealed again. A demonstration of I John 1:5 that You are light and in You is no darkness at all. I see trees and shrubs waiting to be reborn, I see snow covering the land and hiding the imperfections from sight foreshadowing Your redemption and salvation. I see form and function speaking of Your wisdom in the design of the Creation. All declares Your glory and shouts praise to the work of Your hand.

Psalm 18:46-50
The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be the God of my salvation-- (47) the God who gave me vengeance and subdued peoples under me, (48) who delivered me from my enemies; yes, you exalted me above those who rose against me; you rescued me from the man of violence. (49) For this I will praise you, O LORD, among the nations, and sing to your name. (50) Great salvation he brings to his king, and shows steadfast love to his anointed, to David and his offspring forever.

The LORD lives,
and blessed be my rock,

and exalted be the God of my salvation

Sing it, O my soul, sing it! He has delivered me from my enemies, He has raised me above those sought my harm, He has given me power and wisdom beyond measure to resist the wiles of the Evil One, He is the LORD, God Almighty.

The LORD lives,
and blessed be my rock,
and exalted be the God of my salvation

Psalm 119:48

Lord, that this Lord's Day will be a day of meditating on Your commandments; a day of devoted meditation searching for understanding of Your Word and Your Law, seeking guidance for my life.

Psalm 18:37-45
I pursued my enemies and overtook them, and did not turn back till they were consumed. I thrust them through, so that they were not able to rise; they fell under my feet. For you equipped me with strength for the battle; you made those who rise against me sink under me. You made my enemies turn their backs to me, and those who hated me I destroyed. They cried for help, but there was none to save; they cried to the LORD, but he did not answer them. I beat them fine as dust before the wind; I cast them out like the mire of the streets. You delivered me from strife with the people; you made me the head of the nations; people whom I had not known served me. As soon as they heard of me they obeyed me; foreigners came cringing to me. Foreigners lost heart and came trembling out of their fortresses.

If all things have been put under Your feet, Lord -- and they have been -- then I am secure from my foes, so long as I look to You, high and lifted up even as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness. I am empowered to vanquish all my enemies, for I fight against the wiles of the Evil One in the power and with the wisdom that You provide. You are the Rock of my Salvation.

Psalm 18:25-36
With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless; with the purified you show yourself pure; and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous. For you save a humble people, but the haughty eyes you bring down. For it is you who light my lamp; the LORD my God lightens my darkness. For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. This God--his way is perfect; the word of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. For who is God, but the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God?--the God who equipped me with strength and made my way blameless. He made my feet like the feet of a deer and set me secure on the heights. He trains my hands for war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand supported me, and your gentleness made me great. You gave a wide place for my steps under me, and my feet did not slip.

Lord, it is Your equipping, Your transforming. For as it is written in Hebrews 13:20-21 "Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Psalm 18:20-24
The LORD dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he rewarded me. For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God. For all his rules were before me, and his statutes I did not put away from me. I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from my guilt. So the LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.

Yes, LORD, You have rewarded me according to the cleanness of my hands in Your sight. And the filter is the Cross and the Blood of Jesus Christ that have cleansed me from all sin. Through You mercy, I am blameless and shameless for Christ bore the blame and the shame for me. And then, He sent Your Holy Spirit to lead me into all truth and to remind me of all that He taught while He was here on earth. I am a new man in Christ Jesus. Praise You, LORD God Almighty.
