That thought scrolled across my mind as a clear and compelling message from the Lord in the late spring of 2005. As interim pastor of the Uptown Baptist Church in Chicago, I was responsible for the Wednesday evening prayer gathering and had been seeking the Lord's direction for our summer months of praying together. His words to me that day would impact the congregation and my approach to prayer more than I realized at the time. Read more . . . Should We Pray for the Lost? by Jon Graf   I have a close friend who believes that we do not need to pray for the lost. His reasoning is that nowhere in scripture does it say that we are to pray for the lost. There are commands to pray for a few things-the peace of Jerusalem, laborers for the harvest, pray for your enemy-but nowhere does it command us to pray for the lost. I had to gently disagree with my friend, but I can understand a little of his thinking. Nowhere is there a direct command, "pray for the lost," but we pray for a lot of things where there is not a direct command to do so. There are, however, some very clear evidences that Paul prayed for the lost. Read more . . . Blessings, Jon The Benefits of Praying Together By Jon Graf I was recently in a small church that for years has struggled to grow beyond sixty people. They are dear, sincere people who want to trust God to use them in greater ways in their community. I challenged them to focus more on Kingdom issues in their prayers (as opposed to just the needs of the congregation). In a Facebook chat a few weeks later, the pastor's wife commented that they had tweaked the way they were praying, and a neighbor had prayed to receive Christ that week. A month after this they saw six women pray to receive Christ at a women's event. I will continue to pray for a renewed passion to seek the kingdom as they pray together. Despite the fact that many churches do not have significant corporate prayer expressions, most prayer leaders and pastors believe praying together is important. But what are the benefits? They had never really experienced a time where anyone other than a person from the platform would pray in the service. This would be an event where I would guide people to pray on a theme in groups. It would be a stretch for their staid people. They presented the idea to their pastor. He balked. We can't make people feel uncomfortable like that, he surmised. He and I talked through what I would do. No one would be forced to pray; I would put some prayer points and a sample prayer on a power point screen; it would only go 3-4 minutes. January 2017  Dear Phil, A new year often encourages a fresh start. This is true of efforts to make prayer foundational in churches as well. We share resources, exchange ideas for prayer initiatives, and pray together. We try to stay apprised of the various local and national calls to prayer so that we might invite our congregations to participate. Yet we are different in our emphases. Justin is particularly passionate about mentoring and mobilizing men in his church to pray with a worship focus. Valerie has developed an effective drive-through prayer ministry in her community. Andrea oversees a ministry that helps people with healing kinds of prayer. I am especially engaged in mentoring a younger generation in prayer. Whenever someone shares an idea or successful prayer initiative, I think to myself, Hey, we should do that. Any of these prayer ideas and initiatives would enhance my church's prayer ministry. But as the director of prayer ministries, I have the responsibility of launching prayer initiatives that best fit our congregation-initiatives that God confirms He wants us to do.   Read More . . . Probably due to the choices we have, there is a growing groundswell of prayer for the nation. . . and I believe it will continue to rise even after the elections.
