God Gives the Direction

I'm preparing to teach Bible study tomorrow on verses from Genesis 12 and 13. One thing sticks out to me tonight . . . when God called Abram, He didn't give him any details. He only told Abram to go "to the land I will show you" (Gen. 12:1). There are times in my life when a couple of words or a phrase jumps out at me. This is one of those.

I've talked to a lot of people lately, some through this network, who have lost their jobs and are struggling to know what to do next. Wouldn't it be great if God gave us a roadmap with specific directions to tell us exactly where we're going next and how we're going to get there? We all know that God doesn't always work that way.

What does He gives us? He gives us a direction, the first step or the next step along a journey in which we often don't know what the end destination will be. That and a promise . . . that He will bless us. Look at what He did through Abram (Abraham). He blessed the world through Abram's descendant, Jesus.

The destination for Abram was one that he could not possibly have imagined for himself. But God could.

Like Abram, God has plans for us that we cannot imagine for ourselves.

But God can.

That's a pretty amazing promise.

  • Great devotional reminder - that's where I am with my freelancing - wanting to get the map, but needing to take one more step each day - sometimes each hour!

Looking forward to your Israel posts (will try to control my jealousy but at least I'll get to live through your trip!)  Need anyone to carry your luggage, take notes, type your notes... ok that was a bit desperate :)  Will be praying as you bring us God's messages from God's country.

  • When God wants us to go to where He is directing us, that destination, person, place or idea will almost always nag at our heart or never leave our mind's eye. For over 10 years after reading a book way back then, a particular place in our lovely country never really would go away so recently I pulled up roots, took nothing with me but the vehicle I was driving and planted myself in a totally strange city not knowing anyone. I am so excited to see how God is going to work in my life here. No job, no family, no friends but truly my heart is laden with joy from the Holy Spirit for being obedient.
"There are many plans in a man's heart; nevertheless, the Lord's counsel - that will stand" Prov 19:21
  • Sometimes we are so busy looking for something to do that we don't recognize His direction such as when He calls us to Be Still and Know that He His God, when He says to us sit at my feet and learn of me. Thank you for this post reminding us to look toward our Lord and Savior and have our hearts and minds set on Him rather than our circumstances and environment. It is He who will direct our path.
