A Personal Note to My Readers

Above all the books and hundreds of articles, manuals, lectures, columns, sermons, plus thousands of social media posts, podcasts, vlogs, and blog posts that I‟ve created over the past five decades, I regard this Primer as the most important contribution of all. In it, I lay bare before you my own soul. I expose to you some of the deepest passions of my heart. I openly present to you, without reservation, why I‟m convinced the battle for the soul of my nation, already fully underway, is an immediate life-ordeath struggle none of us can avoid—in which all of us are involved, one way or another. In a very real sense,

I’m risking everything here.

This might include the loss of friends and reputation.

But I must be candid and straightforward with you about what I see as existential threats bearing down upon us. However, I am also bold to share with you the singular, breathtaking, abounding hope in Christ I have because of what I believe God is preparing for this nation—as millions of Jesus followers and their churches across the land wake up and rise up to his greatness and glory, to his person and purposes, in whole new ways, by the grace of God.

The hour for this has come.

Therefore, please consider what I share with care, prayer, an open mind, and an expectant heart.

1) "Christ at the center [as the focus] of our PURSUIT" --  The lack of this is at the heart of the confusion the article talks about.  It's what I wrote about 25 years ago in my book CHRIST IS ALL! -- the need to move from a singular emphasis on the centrality of Christ (Christ at the center of who I am) INTO a full engagement with and pursuit of the supremacy of Christ = living life at the center of who HE is, where HE is headed, what HE is doing, how HE gets exalted.  I've been preaching this for decades but it requires a major paradigm shift for the evangelical church as clearly shown in this article.

 

2) The worldview this article is calling for is what I'm referring to and expanding on as indicated in the subtitle of my new boo, THE HOUR HAS  COME -- "How a Christ Awakening WINS the Battle for the Soul of America."

 

3) As we seek to implement the teachings of Jesus and the ways of Jesus, we must never divorce that from the need for the power of the  indwelling, risen Jesus through the Holy Spirit to make our efforts truly fruitful AND Christ exalting AND life-giving.

Some of Richard’s Favorite Insights From the The Hour Has Come The hour has come for a “revolution of revelation”—for a radically renewing demonstration of the sovereign, saving glory of the Lord Jesus Christ (p. 17). “We have become puny Christians because we have created a puny Christ” (Stott, p. 18). The Church’s tragic spiritual deficit—the serious shortfall in our foundational Christology … is simultaneously and steadily crippling our nation more than any other single crisis the American people are facing right now (p. 19). A CHRIST Awakening takes place as the whole Church (locally or nationally) becomes wholly alive to the whole vision of the whole Christ—and to our whole part in his global cause (p. 24). The essence of a Christ Awakening involves a spiritual transaction by which Christians become “re-enchanted” with Christ (p. 25). It is this Jesus … the real and true Jesus, God in the flesh, full of grace and truth, Lord of time and eternity, above every name in all ages to come, triumphant over sin and death, alive and moving in revolutionizing power among the nations today—it is thisJesus who can win the battle for the soul of America! (p. 26). Christlikeness displayed in the Church in America leads to a renovation of the soul of America (p. 53). “The Church in its present state is utterly unfit and unprepared for the great work that God has put before it and expects it to undertake” (Murray, p. 59). Recognize that whatever other troubles we face as a nation, they can be resolved in positive, effective ways—but only to the degree that God’s people are able, first, to reverse the Christological crisis inside the Body of Christ. For this key principle stands: The state of the soul of our nation and the state of the soul of the Church are inseparable (p. 59). Clearly, America’s peril is beyond constitutional. It is Christological—whether its citizens know it or not (p. 69). Practically speaking, our nation is in serious jeopardy—in a moral and spiritual freefall—due to, above all, a breakdown in how multitudes of Christians view the grace, greatness, goodness, and glory of the Lord Jesus Christ (p. 65). The state of the soul of our nation and the state of the soul of the Church are inseparable (p. 70). A powerful, unavoidable awe of Jesus is the mark of every true Christ Awakening (p. 86). The renewal of vision and passion for Jesus himself is the overriding focus of, the fundamental reason for, and the ultimate destination of any lasting spiritual renovation of God’s people (p. 96). A CHRIST Awakeninghappens when, by the saving grace of God and the transforming power of the Spirit, the whole Church becomes wholly alive to the whole vision of the wholeChrist and, therefore, wholly involved in his kingdom purposes (p. 97). As a God-given Christ Awakening is experienced simultaneously by hundreds of thousands of churches from coast to coast—as they are filled with millions of Jesus followers who are coming alive to Jesus in meaningful new ways—the outflow will eventually recover, mend, and refurbish the very fabric of American society itself (p. 98). I live in unwavering anticipation of the imminent, expansive Christward renovation of the Church in America. I foresee a fresh, Bible-based, Jesus-oriented, Spirit-driven, coast-to-coast recovery and redirection of the life and witness of every stream of the Church, leading to the transformation of the nation’s spiritual landscape (p. 124). Change the conversationsthat go on in your church so that talking more and more about the glories of Jesus becomes a primary emphasis. This one step will unleash spiritual dynamics in your congregation that, by the Spirit of God, will surprise you as they lead to the awakening to Christ that many of our churches greatly need (p. 127). Do you think the hour has come when every congregation in America—of every denomination and every tradition—would greatly benefit if they commissioned a handful of members to form a first-of-its-kind “committee” that is solely dedicated to ensuring that our Savior and Lord increasingly becomes the exalted Savior and supremeLord, gaining the preeminence in the eyes and hearts of their members? (p. 137). May fervor for exalting the Son of God, the Lamb slain for us but now seated triumphantly on the throne of heaven, awaken the Church to win the soul of America. He must be seen as our nation’s one and only lasting hope (p. 144).
