National Day of Prayer for Our Elected Officials in Washington, DC Oct. 28, 2011

ST. LOUIS, Oct. 24, 2011 /Christian Newswire/ -- There will be a National Day of Prayer for our elected officials in Washington DC on Friday Oct. 28, 2011 at 5:00 pm, doors will open at 4:00 pm, taking place at Hylton Memorial Chapel, Woodbridge, VA a suburb of Washington DC. A dinner banquet will follow after the prayer meeting. To register, please call Lara Publications at 800-599-7313, and secure a seat, or register online at www.closerwalk.net

Over 5,000 churches in the Washington DC area and 1000 churches from the St. Louis, MO area have been invited including the entire Congress and President Obama.

"If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves, pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven, forgive their sins and heal their land" - II Chronicles 7:14.

We're a nation in crisis! A church so divided! A people so disenchanted! The prayer meeting is being organized by the St. Louis County, MO - chapter of CRYOUT America - Awakening of which organization is dedicated to fasting and praying for America for spiritual revival. Billy Wilson is the CEO of the national organization. The objective of the prayer is that God will prick the hearts of our elected officials to stop party bickering, quest on personal agendas and ideologies, put aside individual differences, and work together for the good of the nation.

I strongly apologize to those who got upset because the prayer meeting was initially intended for the White House and it was moved to Hylton Memorial Chapel, Woodbridge, VA because of the scheduling conflicts incurred according to the White House scheduling office. To those who got angry because the prayer meeting was moved out of the White House, I strongly believe if Jonah can pray in the belly of a fish, and God heard and answered that prayer, God can hear our prayers from anywhere. What is more important is the urgency of a call to prayer for the nation. The continuous Wall Street demonstration spreading across the nation and the world is a reminder of the urgency of a call to prayer. May God's light shine on us from above.

  • To pray on a regular basis for specific neighbors, friends, work associates, classmates, and others by name.
  • To care for them by loving them as Jesus would.
  • To share the Gospel either personally or by inviting them to church or an evangelistic event.
  • Christians who sign this commitment are joining a growing movement of tens of thousands who are committed to follow Jesus in this prayer-care-share lifestyle based on His Great Commandment (Mark 12:30-31) and Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20).

Record Response For National Back-To-Church Sunday
Loving Our Communities to Christ

ImageFifteen churches in the Coachella Valley were among the 7,600 participating nationally in Back to Church Sunday in September. Last year, 3,400 churches participated, resulting in 1.4 million invitations, according to campaign spokesman Philip Nation. Getting people to show up at a church raises the chances they'll attend regularly, Nation said.

"When a person visits a church for the first time, there's a 10 percent chance they'll return," he said. "On the second visit, there's a 15 percent chance they'll return, and so on."

For the past six decades, a steady 42 percent of Americans attend church weekly, according to Gallup poll archives. This year, participating churches represented 34 denominations opening their doors to an estimated 250,000 visitors Sept. 18. Churches responding to a post-event survey welcomed an average of 34 new visitors, an increase of 25.4 percent in weekly attendance. Some churches reported that they doubled in attendance that day. One church plant, "Overflow Church" reporting on Facebook, said its attendance was up 500%.

Nearly 95 percent of pastors surveyed said they would participate again in National Back To Church Sunday, which will be held next on Sept. 16, 2012. A study by LifeWay Research and the North American Mission Board of more than 15,000 Americans found 67 percent say a personal invitation from a family member would be effective in getting them to visit a church; 63 percent say an invitation from a friend or neighbor would likely move them to respond. Next year, National Back To Church Sunday will be held Sept. 16.

Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church

November 13, Worldwide

ImageThe International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church (IDOP), Nov. 13, is a global day of intercession for persecuted Christians worldwide. Its primary focus is to encourage intercessory prayer on behalf of persecuted communities of the Christian faith. Open Doors USA has prepared a number of valuable resources for pastors, church leaders, and individuals for this year's day of prayer. Resources to share the story of the persecuted church with congregations, small groups, classes, or friends and family are available online. Downloads include church leader materials, bulletin inserts and lessons, and videos. In addition, Open Doors USA has an initiative to spread the story of the persecuted church to the American church and beyond. "One With Them" serves as a call to action to unite with persecuted believers, not just for IDOP, but always. One way Christians in the United States can show their support is through One With Them wristbands. The black, rubber wristband looks like barbed wire. It provides an opportunity to explain to others the plight of persecuted believers. One With Them seeks to bridge the gap between American Christians and those around the world who suffer for their faith.

Through collaboration with other ministries including Luis Palau Association's Next Generation Alliance, the event has grown into an annual full-day festival featuring a growing repertoire of well-known Christian artists and new attractions such as BMX and skate demonstrations. On Labor Day in Portland, Oregon, Next Generation Alliance, Save the City Records and several area churches hosted Day in the Park. The event featured inflatable jump houses, plywood skate ramps and tents of food and activities. Music acts from freestyle hip hop to gospel played as local and visiting Christian artists joined the free event for Portland's inner-city community. Volunteer counselors were available throughout the day to pray and talk with anyone in need. The collaborators expressed a hope that this community-based outreach model would become the norm among churches.

Georgia Church Follows in Jesus' Footsteps, 'Feeds the 5,000'

ImageFollowing in Christ's footsteps, Trinity United Methodist Church in Rome, Ga. provided a week's worth of food to nearly 5,000 people in one day. Organizers of Jesus in the Park, an annual event, saw 1,600 families each take home 50 pounds of shelf-stable free food. In addition, members of the community could also spend a free afternoon at Rome's Ridge Ferry Park listening to concerts, eating hot dogs and cotton candy, and playing games. By 2:30 p.m. about 50,000 pounds of food had already been given away. Organizers estimate that somewhere between 75,000 and 100,000 pounds had been distributed by the end of the event. Any leftover food items were returned to a food pantry to be given away on another day.

Jersey Church Hands Out $30,000 in 'Reverse Offering'

ImageInstead of passing the plate for parishioners to fill with greenbacks, Liquid Church in New Jersey handed out over $30,000 to members in a "reverse offering." Each person received an envelope with the words "God Trusts You!" Inside the envelope were $10, $20 and $50 bills. The initiative took place during a four-part sermon series teaching biblical principles of finance regarding debt and living on budget. The 2,000 member Liquid Church is also investing $60,000 of church offerings into three local recovery projects. Most Bible Readers Want Accurate Word-for-Word Translation

Most American Bible readers prefer word-for-word translations of the original Greek and Hebrew over thought-for-thought translations and value accuracy over readability. That is the finding of a new study by LifeWay Research. A total of 2,000 Bible readers participated in the study through a demographically representative online panel. To qualify, participants had to read the Bible in a typical month either by themselves or as part of a family activity and not merely in a corporate setting. When asked whether they prefer "word-for-word translations, where the original words are translated as exactly as possible" or "thought-for-thought translations, where the translators attempt to reproduce the intent of the original thought rather than translating the exact words," 61 percent chose word-for-word.

Great Tool for Challenging Students in Their Faith
Research suggests that about 45% of students from high school youth ministries toss their faith aside when they go to college. The Fuller Youth Institute describes this kind of faith like a jacket: easy to take on or off given the situation, as opposed to a faith that becomes integrated into every part of a student's life. Far too often for college students, once faith is tossed on the floor, it is quickly shoved aside amid the competing priorities of college. The websitewww.stickyfaith.org offers a video and discussion questions to foster conversation about faith and the transition to college.

Prayer

FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Dear MAC Partner,

Just a year ago, I had the privilege of joining with some 4,200 Christian leaders from 198 nations of the world for the Cape Town 2010 Congress on World Evangelization which took place in South Africa. It was an outstanding gathering that has so much potential for the mission of Jesus Christ around the world.

The purpose of the congress was to bring a fresh challenge to the global Church to bear witness to Jesus Christ and all His teaching - in every nation, in every sphere of society and in the realm of ideas. I believe that purpose has been fulfilled in many ways in many places in the world including ministries, churches, denominations and individuals.

The Mission America Coalition is a part of the International Lausanne Movement which sponsored Cape Town 2011. We serve as the U.S. Lausanne Committee. As we gathered for our annual gathering in April of this year, we continued the flow of the Cape Town congress as we focused on evangelization in the United States and beyond.

We continue to build on the contributions of Cape Town 2011. As I reflect on those contributions, I believe that one of the most significant is the document entitled The Cape Town Commitment. It is a call to action that all of us should prayerfully consider. You can download the document for your prayerful review by going to our website atwww.missionamerica.org. I pray that you will do it today.

NEWS AND TRENDS
for Ministry Decision Makers

Doubt Builds Faith
According to a 3-year longitudinal study of college kids and their faith by Fuller Seminary, the more students felt they had the opportunity to express their faith doubt while in high school, the higher levels of faith maturity and spiritual maturity they had in college. (Citizen Link 9/12/11)

One-Person One-Religion
Americans have drifted from clearly defined religious denominations to faiths fitting their personal preferences. America is a designer society. We want everything customized to our personal needs —clothing, food, education, and now religion, claims researcher George Barna. Barna laments, "People say, 'I believe in God. I believe the Bible is a good book. And then I believe whatever I want.'" A LifeWay Research study of Protestant pastors finds 62% predict the importance of being identified with a denomination will diminish over the next 10 years. Univ. of California Berkeley Sociologist Robert Bellah says, "You lose the capacity to make connections. Everyone is pretty much on their own." (USA Today 9/14/11)

Declining Denominational Brand Loyalty
LifeWay Research finds that, of more than 900 U.S. Protestant pastors polled, 76% personally consider it vitally important to be part of a denomination; however, 62% believe this will decline over the next decade. For example, in recent years church planters have avoided including a denominational affiliation in the church name in an effort to attract new believers. The higher the level of education attained by a pastor, the more they value denominational identification. Overall, the older a pastor, the higher they value denominational identification. (OneNewsNow 9/16/11)

Religious Decline
The percentages of Americans who know God exists (64%), say they've had a born-again experience (36%), and who pray several times a week (69%) have remained steady since the '80s. The percentages who read the Bible at least weekly (31%), watch religious TV (28%), feel extremely close to God (31%), consider themselves very or extremely religious (26%), or believe in heaven (86%) or hell (73%) have remained fairly static during the 17-year period measured, says Dr. Mark Chaves of Duke Univ. But, in 1957, 3% of Americans had no religious affiliation vs. 17% in '08. Weekly church attendance is closer to 25% than the 35%- 40% often reported. The percentages who never attend services rose from 13% in '90 to 22% in '08. The percentage who grew up with religiously active fathers fell from 70% for those born before 1900 to 45% for those born after '70. Since'80 the percentage who believe the Bible should be taken literally fell from 40% to 30%. The percentage who have a great deal of confidence in leaders of religious institutions has slipped from 35% in the '70s to 25% today.(American Religion: Contemporary Trends, Mark Chaves, Princeton Univ. Press 2011)

Pastors Concerned
82% of American Protestant pastors agree (55% strongly) with the statement, "I am concerned that the emerging generation of children, teens, and young adults is not embracing the Christian faith to the same degree as their parents." (Facts and Trends, Spring 2011)

Commitment
On the one hand, 81% of self-identified Christian adults say they've made a personal commitment to Christ that is still important in their life today. 78% strongly agree spirituality is very important to them. 22% of self-identified Christians claim to be "completely dependent upon God." These figures help explain why a 52% of self-identified Christian adults believe there is much more to the Christian life than what they have experienced. Without a full determination to live like Christ and for Him, the path to complete transformation is blocked.(Maximum Faith by George Barna, Metaformation/SGG/WHCP, 2011)

Free Speech in the Pulpit
A new survey by the Alliance Defense Fund and LifeWay Research has found 86% of U.S. Protestant pastors believe the government should not regulate their sermons. "Pastors and churches shouldn't live in fear of being punished or penalized by the government," said ADF Senior Legal Counsel Erik Stanley. "Keeping the gospel central to what is preached is not in conflict with addressing the subject of political candidates when warranted. These results show that the desire to keep the gospel central does not mean that pastors want the IRS to regulate their sermons under the threat of revoking their church's tax-exempt status. No government-recognized status can be conditioned upon the surrender of a constitutionally protected right." (Church Report 9/12/11)

Collegiate Faith Crises
Millions of college freshmen are overwhelmed trying to make new friends, adjusting to more rigorous schoolwork, and learning to live away from home. Whether they also find time for church during their first two weeks on campus will set the mold for the rest of their college years, writes George Barna in his latest book, Sticky Faith: Everyday Ideas to Build Lasting Faith in Your Kids. 61% of 20-somethings who regularly attended church as teenagers later left the pews. 40% of freshman had difficulty finding a church in college. Only 1 in 7 students surveyed said they were well-equipped for college, and less than 50% of seniors with doubts talked about them with others.(Pastor's Weekly Briefing 9/16/11)

Men & Faith
Church attendance among U.S. men declined from 42% to 36% between '91 and '11 claims George Barna in his book, Futurecast. At the same time, Sunday school attendance declined from 21% to 13% and volunteering at a church slipped from 24% to 18%. In addition, the proportion of men who believe the Bible is totally accurate in all of the principles it teaches fell from 43% to 33% and having personal responsibility to share their religious views with others dropped from 28% to 23%. Yet, regular Bible reading remained unchanged, (41% in '01 and 40% in '91). (Barna Update 8/1/11)

Focus on the Family
laid off 49 people on 9/16 due to revenues failing to meet budget expectations. The family ministry's staff is now 650, down from 1,400 just a few years ago. (Foster Network 9/11)

Combined Attendance
of 2011Outreach 100 Fastest-Growing Churches is 638,693. These churches added 97,168 people over their combined previous year's attendance, an average of more than 970 per church These 100 churches include 246 worship sites. (Outreach 100, 2011)

Educated More Religious
A new Univ. of Nebraska study challenges the notion that the more educated a person becomes, the less religious they become. Although education does influence Americans' religious beliefs and activities, the effects are more complex than conventional wisdom suggests. The study found higher levels of education eroded Americans' viewpoints that their specific religion is the "one true faith" and that the Bible is the literal Word of God. Education was also positively associated with belief in the afterlife. And while more highly educated Americans were somewhat less likely to definitely believe in God, it's because some of them believed in a higher power, not because they were particularly likely to not believe at all. Also disaffiliating, or dropping religion altogether, was not a popular option for highly educated Americans, in fact, having a greater level of education was associated most often with converting to mainline, non-evangelical Protestant denominations. (Church Report 8/11/11)

Homeschooling
A new Concordia Univ. and Mount Allison Univ. study finds structured homeschooling may offer opportunities for academic performance beyond those typically experienced in public schools. Though numerous studies have shown the benefits of homeschooling, this was one of the first "nonpartisan" studies to investigate home education vs. public schooling. Structured homeschoolers outperformed public school students from a half-grade advantage in math to 2.2 grade levels in reading. (LifeSite News 9/13/11)

Fathers Needed
Research at Montreal's Concordia Univ. shows fathers who actively engage in raising their children make important contributions to their children's cognitive abilities and behavioral functioning. Compared with other children with absentee dads, kids whose fathers were active parents in early and middle childhood had fewer behavior problems and higher intellectual abilities as they grew older, even among socio-economically at-risk families. Girls whose fathers were absent during their middle childhood had significantly higher levels of emotional problems at school than girls whose fathers were present. (LifeSite News 9/9/11)

Generation X Married Couples prefer monogamy to divorce, finds Univ. of Virginia's National Marriage Project. The number of divorces in the U.S. has been in decline since it peaked in '80. The decline is particularly true among highly educated couples, only 11% of whom divorce during their first 10 years of marriage vs. 37% of the rest of the population. Religious practice is an even better predictor than a college degree of happiness in marriage and low risk of divorce.(Baltimore Sun 8/1/11)

Marriage Marginalized
Brookings Institute scholars are concerned about the marked decline of marriage among those who have graduated from high school, but have no college degree. This cohort comprises 58% of the adult U.S. population. Although marriage is still highly regarded across U.S. social classes, in recent years, moderately educated Americans have become less likely to form stable, high-quality marriages, while college-educated Americans (30% of the adult population) have become more likely to do so. High school-only grads are markedly more likely than college grads to have 3 or more sex partners in a lifetime. Although many college grads cohabit before marriage (however, fewer than non-college grads) 94% marry before having their first child. Among high school-only grads, just 56% marry before their first child's birth. Divorce rates among college grads have fallen to 1970 levels in recent years, while rising slightly for high-school grads. (Pastor's Weekly Briefing 8/25/11)

Divorce Costs
On average a divorce costs a couple $2,500 on the front end. But the costs of government support for single-parent families, can cost taxpayers anywhere from $20-30,000/year. America has had 1 divorce for every 2 marriages for 36 years, says Michael McManus. Our divorce rate is triple that of Britain or France. After 5 years, 23% of Americans have divorced vs. 8% in Britain or France, and 10% in Canada. (LifeSite News 8/22/11)

Background Checks Work
More than 25,000 background checks conducted by churches or organizations on prospective workers in the past three years have turned up more than 1,600 felony offenses, with the number of organizations conducting background checks having risen 27% in the past year, according to LifeWay Christian Resources. (Baptist Press 9/12/11)

Prime of Life
During a recent study 350,000 Americans of all ages were asked what season of their lives produced the greatest amount of happiness. It was discovered that after age 50, not all but most people are happier, less anxious, less stressed, and have less hostile emotions. (My Next Book-Year7-Chapter 15, Bob Buford)

Want a Job, Get an Education
In March '11; the national unemployment rate was 12% for people with only a high-school diploma, 4.5% for college grads, and 2% for those with a professional degree. (Atlantic Magazine 9/11)

Downward Mobility
Nearly 1 in 3 Americans who grew up middle-class has slipped down the income ladder as an adult, finds a new Pew Charitable Trusts report. Downward mobility is most common among middle-class people who are divorced or separated from their spouses, did not attend college, scored poorly on standardized tests, or used hard drugs. Being married helps people avoid the worst economic outcomes. Education, particularly going to college, is another crucial factor in economic stability. African American men have a particularly hard time clinging to middle-class status.(Washington Post 9/6/11)

Don't Leave Home Without It
Based on a recent LSU Agricultural Center study. Nutritionist Dr. Beth Reames stated, "With breakfast, students think faster and clearer and have better recall. Breakfast eaters also score higher on tests and have better concentration and muscle coordination." Most studies show children who eat breakfast are more alert and perform better on school tests than children who do not eat breakfast. They are also more creative and energetic. (Christian Post 6/24/11)

Builder & Senior Generations
Among Builders (1927-1945) and Seniors (born prior to 1927), Sunday school attendance dropped by 8 points, from 28% in '91 to 20% in '11. Weekly Bible reading also declined by 8 points, from 54% to 46%. Unexpectedly, this group has had a 12-point increase in attending a church of 600 or more people. Their proportion of unchurched has climbed 8 points to 29% since '91. There has been a 10% increase in the number of Elders who have made a personal commitment to Jesus that is still important in their life today to 76%. Their percentage of Born Agains has risen by 11 points to 49%. 71%today vs. 80% in '91 believe God is the all-knowing, all-powerful creator of the universe who continues to rule today. (Futurecast by George Barna, Barna Books, 2011)

Web Surfing Helps Work
According to a new study, surfing the Web actually refreshes tired workers and increases their productivity, compared to other distractions like personal calls, texts or emails. "Browsing the Internet serves an important restorative function," a Nat'l Univ. of Singapore study. However, personal emailing was particularly distracting. When browsing the Internet, people usually choose to visit only the sites they like. "It's like going for a coffee break. It is pleasurable and rejuvenating," wrote Don J.Q. Chen and Vivien K.G Lim, study authors. (WSJ 8/22/11)

Multi-site Mergers
A recent Leadership Network survey of churches who had participated in a merger revealed that multi-site churches rated their experiences higher than churches that consolidated into one location. Multi-site churches also reported greater growth after a merger. (Advance 8/23/11)

Fast Facts:
  • 25 million copies of the Bible are sold in the U.S. annually.
  • 9 out of 10 homes in America have a Bible.

Pastors Need Prayer On Clergy Appreciation Month

PrintPDF

Focus on the Family named and began emphasizing Clergy Appreciation Month (CAM) in 1994, reminding congregations that it was biblical and proper to honor their pastoral staffs and pastoral families throughout the year, but suggesting that they set aside the month of October for a special tangible tribute.

Lee Grady has written an excellent column on Clergy Appreciation Month called "Your Pastor Is on the Firing Line—Please Pray!" which I urge you to read. Click here to read the column.

10 Things to Pray for Today's Teenager

10 Things to Pray for Today's Teenager
Terrace Crawford shares important things youth workers can pray for this generation.

Terrace Crawford

I've seen the Lord doing some amazing things in the lives of teenagers this year. I know its because of the work of God and the result of prayer. Call me crazy, but I believe this generation of students will have an amazing impact on our world and will pursue God with a greater zeal and passion than the generations before them. I invest more time now in prayer for young people than I ever have. Today I want to share with you 10 things that I pray for today's teenager:

1. Purpose - I believe God has a plan and purpose for every student. I speak this over teenagers and ask God to remind them that no matter what their circumstances are, to give them passion and a deep-seated purpose for living. (Jeremiah 29:11; Psalm 139:13-16; 2 Cor. 5:20; Jeremiah 1:5; John 14:13; Rom 8:28-29)
2. Friendships - I spend more time talking about the friendships young people develop more than other topics because I know the truth that you are (and become) who you hang out with. I pray God will give today's teenager wisdom in choosing their friends and that God will bring people into their lives who will point them to Christ. I also pray that He will use students to encourage and build up each other like never before. (1 Cor 15:33; Heb 10:25; 1 Thess. 5:11; 1 Sam 16:7)
3. Character - Today's teen is bombarded with every temptation known to man and the enemy is seeking to destroy their character. I pray that this generation of students may experience an ongoing transformation by having their minds renewed and that they will be examples to the world in their speech, lives, love, faith and purity. I also ask for more great Christ-like role models for our students, particularly among their own peers. (1 Tim 4:12; Rom 12:1-2; Psalm 24:4)
4. Purity- I pray that God would give our students more of a hunger for righteousness than a sexual appetite and that they would see through the enemies lies. I ask God to strengthen them and give them the drive to flee sexual immorality and help them reserve the gift of sex for marriage. (John 8:32; 1 Peter 1:5; Heb 13:4; 1 Cor 6:18; 1 John 4:4; James 1:12-14)
5. Passion - May God grant this generation of teenagers an anointing of the power by the Holy Spirit to be the greatest witnesses for Christ Jesus than we've ever known. I also pray that their zeal for obedience would supersede any other human desire that they have. (Acts 1:8; Luke 4:18-19; 1 Peter 3:15; Matt 28:19-20; Gal 5:24)
6. Money - The root of all evil is the love of money. I pray that God would give spiritual eyes to today's teen and help them to view money as a great resource for Kingdom purposes. May God grant them contentment in plenty or when poor because of their richness in Christ Jesus. (Phil 4:19; Matt 6:24; Eccl 5:10; Heb 13:5; 1 Tim 6:10)
7. Submission and Honor - I pray that this generation would submit to Christ and to those in authority over them. May he give them grace to love, respect, and honor their parents, teachers, spiritual leaders and governing officials. (Eph 6:2-3; Heb 13:17; Mk 12:17)
8. Spiritual growth - I pray that God nurtures soil of the hearts of young people and grants them a greater sensitivity to their spirit so that they may grow in the knowledge and grace of Jesus Christ. I also pray for more passionate workers for the harvest of youth ministry. (Luke 2:52; Gal 2:20; 2 Cor 5:17; Eph 3:16)
9. Discernment - I pray God would give our teenagers the knowledge of the truth of God and spiritual eyes to see so that the enemy would not be able to deceive them. I pray they may also be able to discern between the teachings of the Living God and false gods or prophets. (1 Tim 3:9; 2 Cor 2:11; Jn 17:17; Eph 6:14)
10. Hope - May God help today's teen take every thought captive for Christ. I pray He would also fill every young person with the hope of the resurrection of Jesus Christ and protect their mind and heart from hopelessness. May God also help them to cling to Christ during discouragement and soak up His strength when offering this same hope to others. (Gal 6:9; Eph 6:13; Phil 4:8; 2 Tim 2:13; Heb 10:23; 1 Peter 5:8-9)
Join me in prayer for today's teenagers and share this with your ministry leaders. endslug_533550574.gif

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (ANS) -- Where were you on September 11, 2001? On that 9/11, I was involved in a meeting of National Religious Broadcasters in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Erwin Lutzer was keynote speaker. As we learned of the tragic attacks in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania, we gathered the group and Dr. Lutzer began to teach of St. Augustine's "City of God" vs. the "City of Man".

A sight on 9/11 that we will never forget

This world is not our home. The City of God is real and permanent. The City of God is a heavenly and spiritual matter, as opposed to an earthly and political affair. The City of God was contrasted with and in conflict with, the city of men. But the City of God's eventual triumph is assured by divine prophesy.

Our world has changed since 9/11/01. One can't get on an airplane without thinking how our world has lost its innocence. And the attacks on our nation transformed America from the great benefactor of the world to a country fearful and suspicious of our international colleagues. Many call them "the enemy"

However, many mission organizations have chosen to not view people in these nations as enemies. Jesus taught to love our enemies and pray for those who despise us. He gave us the ministry of reconciliation.

In the last few years, HCJB Global has re-doubled efforts to proclaim the message of Christ through media and demonstrate God's love through human care.

The verse I discovered in 9/11/01 rings true this 9/11. It's Psalm 91:1. "He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty."

In fact, all of Psalm 91 is a statement of God's shelter and protection. It might be good reading and reflection on this 911.

The Psalm goes on to state: "you will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day.

If you make the Most High your dwelling, even the Lord who is my refuge, then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent."

This is better than taking your shoes off before your board an airplane. This is the calm assurance that God's protection is worth more than the war on terror, or the TSA screenings.

Our High and Awesome Calling as Intercessors
"When the Church learns the power of prayer...they will shake the world." - R.A. Torrey

In Old Testament Israel, the high priest would venture into the Holy of Holies to confess the sing of his people and carry out the vital business of intercession with God on their behalf. In the New Testament, this privilege of priesthood has been extended to all believers through the New Covenant that our high priest, Jesus, has enacted through the offering of His own blood. The apostle Peter proclaims that we who were washed with His blood have now become a "royal priesthood".

We as New Testament followers of Christ have also been given the prophetic mantle that was once reserved for isolated prophets of old like Isaiah and Jeremiah so that the Apostle Paul wrote the Corinthians that "you can all prophesy". In addition, one day we will actually rule and reign with the Lord as His royal heirs. In the meantime, through prayer, we can utilize the awesome authority He gives us to affect the nations, indeed our whole globe, in order to advance His purposes until that day when His glory will cover the earth like the waters cover the sea.

Derek Prince, in his book Shaping History through Prayer and Fasting, said a stunning thing: "God has vested in us - His believing people on earth - authority by which we may determine the destinies of nations and governments. He expects us to use our authority both for His glory and our own good." He based this astounding statement on Jeremiah 1:9-10. In that passage, the Lord says He will put His words in the prophet's mouth and in so doing will appoint him "over nations and kingdoms". God's words, spoken forth by an insecure, self doubting teenager, would have a revolutionary impact, affecting the very life and destiny of societies. History bears out how accurately the God-inspired prophetic prayers and words of Jeremiah were fulfilled.

Centuries later, Jesus erupted with fiery rage at the Jerusalem temple when He found that a preoccupation with marketing and money had subverted the temple's ministry and priesthood's calling as a "house of prayer for all nations". What a tragic diversion had taken place since apparently the very wellbeing of the world and its peoples was dependent on the prayers from that place!

It could be said that the future of our planet is now in the hands and hearts of today's intercessors. These are people who share God's heart, allowing His Word and Spirit to guide their praying as they encounter the world in all its disturbing darkness and hopeful possibility. Having more access to late-breaking and comprehensive information than any other generation before us, we have an unprecedented and awesome privilege to shape history through prayer.

Theologian Walter Wink, in his thoughtful book, Engaging the Powers: Discernment and Resistance in a World of Domination, has penned one of the most compelling rationales for the importance of intercessory prayer and the profound influence it can exert on world affairs. He affirmed: "History belongs to the intercessors, who believe the future into being...These shapers of the future are the intercessors, who call out of the future the longed-for new present."

Be assured that our heartfelt, faith-filled prayers will make a huge difference to the wellbeing of our world!

PINK, Prayer initiative for North Korea, September 18-22, 2011 - Nation-Transforming Breakthrough Needed!
Korea
Several hundred South Korean church leaders, along with international intercessors and prayer leaders, will gather near the DMZ, the border between North and South Korea, to pray for the Lord's deliverance and transformation of North Korea, probably the most oppressive and evil situation on earth. It has been called a vast prison camp in which the most awful suffering is being experienced by the great majority of the population. Government officials like Kim Jong Il live the luxurious life while millions starve.
Please pray with us for His anointing, guidance and unity in the Spirit for this crucial initiative. May we will all have His heart for North Korea and pray out His prayers together for breakthrough.

New Prayer Documentary Video on North Korea a "Must See"!

Here is the link for the just completed prayer video on North Korea that we are using in conjunction with PINK, Prayer Initiative for North Korea, Sept. 18-22, that will happen in South Korea shortly. This hard-hitting, heart-stirring video was produced by Ken An and SohMyoung Lee, Korean film producers with the Pan Pacific Film Festival in Los Angeles. Please see it, let your heart be broken, and pray fervently with us for the liberation of North Korea and reintegration with its southern sister of South Korea. Share the video with intercessors and prayer leaders you are in touch with. We want to use it to build united prayer throughout the world for a change in NK.

9/11 and the IPC
9-11
"Yes, Lord, walking in the way of your laws, we wait for you; your name and renown are the desire of our hearts." Isaiah 26:8

Ten years ago, it was the horrendously tragic 9/11 terrorist attack that helped catalyze the formation of the International Prayer Council in the weeks that followed. Thirty-five international prayer leaders answered Ben Jenning's call to meet in New York City at the beginning of December 2001. We struggled to pray at Ground Zero, expressing our deep grief but also extending forgiveness to the extremist monsters and their backers who, because of their bondage to an ideology so full of deception and death, had just wantonly murdered 3000 Americans.

As we prayed and deliberated about the way forward in the global prayer movement, it seemed obvious that it was a time for a "network of prayer networks." It would connect prayer leaders and intercessors across the world to pray concertedly for the effective resolution of global and regional issues such as terrorism, humanitarian disasters, and especially for the fulfillment of the Great Commission and implementation of the Great Commandment.

The key word is "connect". The IPC has been used by the Lord to join brothers and sisters in Christ together across the globe to pray with an informed and united focus in many different situations and venues since 2001. Here is a partial list of what has been accomplished thus far so we can rejoice, thank God, and look ahead:

1)  International Prayer Leaders Consultation, Cape Town, South Africa, November, 2002 - almost 300 prayer networks gathered to launch the IPC and regional prayer networks cross the world.

2) Regional prayer summits through these networks have brought together prayer and ministry leaders in virtually every region of the world. Some regions have met several times and continue to pray and work together for God's transformation.

3)  National prayer initiatives, many of them with IPC-related facilitation teams, have been arranged and led in at least 30 nations. In many cases, the Lord has brought about major transformations by ending wars, removing evil leaders and enabling the formation of national unity governments. He has also ignited spiritual revival among participating pastors, denominational and even political leaders as His people have repented, become reconciled and prayed.

4)  International Prayer Consultations have been held in conjunction with other major events such as the Lausanne Forum in Thailand, 2004, Malaysia, 2006, and the Global Day of Prayer conference, 2010.

5)  Global Day of Prayer - since September 2004, the IPC has gone to bat for the GDOP, helping to mobilize participation around the world through its links with other prayer networks and ministries. Up to 300 million have taken part in these annual days of united prayer for our communities and world.

6)  Two global Children in Prayer Consultations, bringing together children's workers from more than 60 nations, were held in Malaysia (2006), and India (2008). These times of cross-fertilization, along with video and written resources and a new website, helped inspire and broaden the rapidly growing Children in Prayer movement now in possibly 100 nations.

7)   International Prayer Initiatives for the United Nations connected over 400 prayer leaders from 70 plus countries to pray with ambassadors inside the chambers of the U.N. (2007 and 2009).

8)  Rich relationships of love and trust have been developed through such connections, enabling a wonderful Kingdom synergy that has released human, financial and other resources to flow where they are needed.

9)  Now, the IPC (by this time also known as International Prayer Connect) is taking on its biggest challenge yet - the World Prayer Assembly. For the last ten years, we have thought and prayed about this possibility. In connection with the Indonesian and Korean prayer movements who will be co-hosting and with the support of many other prayer networks worldwide, the WPA will take place next year (May 14-18) in Jakarta, Indonesia. See  www.wpa2012.org

Many colleagues in the IPC and thousands upon thousands of other brothers and sisters in Christ have prayed and worked together to make all these things happen. Thank you for the crucial, vital roles you have played, sometimes involving considerable personal sacrifice. As that old saying goes, "It is not what you know but who you know that really matters!"

However, in the final analysis, it is the Spirit of God who has stirred our hearts to join Him in united intercession for our world and the outworking of His loving purposes for it. As Isaiah goes on to say in that same passage, "All that we have accomplished you have done for us." Let us, therefore, reflect, rejoice and give thanks to the Lord who has done "immeasurably more" than all we have asked or imagined!

World Prayer Assembly Update
WPA10
If you are a ministry or marketplace leader, a youth or child leader, you are invited to be a part of the World Prayer Assembly, May 14-18, in Jakarta, Indonesia. You can register to participate at www.wpa2012.org.

In a series of Jakarta meetings with the Indonesian national committee August 18-22, colleagues and I heard encouraging reports about the progress being made by the youth, children, and marketplace tracks as well as about the significant mobilization effort for the WPA happening within their country. There is no doubt in our minds that the WPA is a real "God-thing". His hand is so obviously upon the planning process, and He is bringing so many diverse leaders, networks and movements together to make it happen, not just in Indonesia but from throughout the world. We believe it will be not only a historic convergence of the prayer, mission and marketplace movements, but also a history-changing encounter with the Lord and one another that will rock our world.

Youth and children will be a central part of the Assembly. Youth and children's track leaders announced that they are now making arrangements for 40,000 youth and children to take part in the May 17 national stadium meeting that will occur during the WPA. That evening, 100,000 will gather in the stadium to pray together for Indonesia and our world. It will be carried live on national TV to an estimated 5 million other participants in 200 cities of Indonesia where there will be similar gatherings. Through satellite TV, the broadcast should reach around the world to tens of millions more in what will be one of the largest, perhaps the largest, prayer gathering in history.

Please continue to pray for:

1)   His guidance and help for the international planning team with our various task forces.

2)   the Indonesian national committee working on all the logistics.

3)   those whom God is calling to come from every nation, even the small island nations.

4)   His provision of the financial needs of participants, speakers and facilitators as well as for the extra costs to arrange the WPA (about $2 million still needed).

5)  His protection from radical elements that would try to oppose and hinder and for the goodwill and support of the authorities.

Thanks so much for your vital support!

Mexico Drug War - More Answers as We Pray!
mexico
"Will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry to him day and night? I tell you, he will see that they get justice and that, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?" (Luke 18:7-8)

Here are some reports from our friends at BridgeBuilders Int'l who faithfully report on the situation in the drug war and the U.S. - Mexico border:

PRAISES:
In the last two weeks, two drug tunnels were discovered along the Arizona border. Agents in the Border Patrol's Tucson sector, which covers most of Arizona's border with Mexico, discovered eight tunnels through the end of July of this fiscal year. That is three more than the same period last year, said Mario Escalante, a Border Patrol spokesman in Tucson. Those eight do not include the two tunnels discovered in the past two weeks.

Arrests were made of several Sinaloa Drug Cartel bosses on Wednesday. The takedown was part of an 18-month investigation that yielded more than 30 arrests in Utah, California and Nevada, said Sue Thomas, a spokeswoman for the Drug Enforcement Administration.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR FAITHFUL PRAYERS!

Let's pray:
For the remaining drug cartel leaders to be brought to justice quickly and for President Felipe Calderon and his government to be wise and effective in winning the drug war. He told a group of Christian leaders that "only through prayer" to God could this battle be won.

Holy Death Sect

The Holy Death sect is gaining followers in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico's murder capital, where rival drug cartels have been battling for every inch of turf, according to Fox News' Latino News.

Three Holy Death churches have opened in the past two years in the border city, drawing hundreds of people to pray and make offerings to the "White Girl," a skeletal image dressed in women's clothing. She is called Santa Muerte or "Holy Death." A federal marshal says the shrines to the skeletal "Holy Death" are a growing presence, not just along the U.S.-Mexico border but throughout the United States. "Based on my experience, it appears she is the most popular icon being used by the drug traffickers, criminals not just in Mexico and not just along the Southwest border area but throughout the entire United States, " said U.S. Marshal Robert R. Almonte of El Paso.

Priestess Yolanda Salazar said, "Someone who lives in danger, like the federal police officers, or really any person who lives here in Ciudad Juarez, needs greater protection. And if there is someone who can save you from a tragic death, it's the Holy Death". Drug traffickers and even residents of some sections of the border city battered by drug-related violence ask the Holy Death for protection, sometimes putting up chapels where alms, tequila, cigars, candy and other offerings can be left.

The church, which is open 24 hours a day, tends to fill up on Sundays, when a service takes place. 'It is a protective entity, benevolent, just and equitable. God put the world in her hands since she is dedicated to gathering souls when the flame of life is extinguished,' the priestess said."

Pray for those in the cartels and those under the influence of false gods and spirits like Santa Muerte (Holy Death) to be set free and to come to Christ.

Please pray with us for a magnificent time of encountering the Lord together and praying out His heart for North America. May many new things be birthed through the Spirit's work among us!
South Sudan is "on Fire" and Needs Prayer
sudan
Messages from reliable sources coming in about Sudan Government forces' continued bombing in the Nuba Mountains describe a severe crisis in the Blue Nile region. One message just received from Sudan says: "Southern Blue Nile region is on fire, and we need to pray." Fire here means vicious onslaught on the civilians by the government forces. How many innocent people will die?

Please pray:

1)   that God will show his might for those who are helpless in the situation and be their shield and their protection.

2)   that He would change the hearts of the leaders and that world leaders would see what is actually happening and take appropriate response.

3)   that the people committing these things would be held accountable and that the works of the evil one in Sudan will be destroyed.

4)   for Muslims in Sudan - that God would reveal Himself to them and that they would turn to Jesus in their millions.

Iran: Silence from the Prisons
iran2
A Report from Elam Ministries

"Currently we know of eight Iranian Christians still imprisoned for their faith. Six have spent several months in jail: Farshid Fathi, Vahik Abrahamian, Abrahim Firouzi, Masoud Delijani, Noorollah Ghabitzadeh and Yousef Naderkhani - who was sentenced to death.

There has been very little news of the well-being of the prisoners, though there are unconfirmed reports of ill-health, solitary confinement and continued mistreatment. This silence increases the stress on the family and supporters of the imprisoned.

Two Azeri Christians, Vahid Rofegar and Reza Khanamoei, were arrested on July 15th near the city of Kalibar and are now in prison. These arrests might be linked to complaints about the spread of Christianity in Azerbaijan.

The majority of the nearly 300 believers arrested over the last year have been released, either on bail or with severe warnings and threats against any further Christian activity.

Please pray for news from the prisons, for families of the persecuted, and wisdom for those advocating for the persecuted.

Though there is silence from the prisons, the cries of the people of Iran ring loud and clear as the message of the Gospel continues to have an impact across the nation...Despite the increase in persecution, we have seen a growing thirst for the Word of God in 2011. The more we have distributed the New Testament, the more popular it seems to have become. The more programs we produce for TV, the greater the response, and the more people we train for ministry, the faster the church grows.

Please pray that the cries of the people of Iran will be heard, and that the Holy Spirit will touch every broken life."

Eastern India Prayer and Harvest Network

North East India Harvest Network is committed to mobilize intercessors and church planters within India and the neighbouring countries since 2000 AD with many milestones already as a result of God's answer to united and strategic prayer initiatives:
  1. After 40 days of fasting and prayer initiative - joined by more than 700 Churches and Prayer groups - revival broke out in Mizoram and the neighbouring states of eastern India resulting in the salvation and renewal of thousands of people.
  2. So many prayer mountains, prayers groups had been raised up in NE India through the efforts to network and specifically focus on "Transformational Prayers" for revival in the Churches and healing of the land.
  3. We are connected with national and international prayer networks like NPN, GDOP, WIN, etc. and facilitate them to connect with others. Many missionaries are now doing cross-cultural mission works in South and South East Asia and Africa as a result of these partnerships.
  4. This year our slogan is "Celebrate a Million More" as we begin to praying for a million more intercessors and a million more new believers to harvest by 2012.
  5. We are focused on Bengali and Assamese people. Church planting movement is going on. January this year, 1,420 new believers were baptized, and last month 725 were baptized again while 520 are waiting to be baptized this month.
God has given us Isaiah 54:2-4 for this year - A year of expansion and multiplication! Praise the Lord!

Blessings,

Pray for North Africa!
NAfrica
The Association representing evangelical churches in one of the North African countries has now received official recognition from the Government. This in turn gives the churches it represents legal standing and a legal right to gather and worship. This is not a blank cheque, and legally the believers can still be imprisoned for sharing their faith with a Muslim, so I urge you to keep praying.

In a neighbouring country, one national believer has had his apartment broken into by an Islamist. His Christian material was burnt, but he remained unharmed. Praise God for protecting our brother but continue praying for God's divine boldness.

These who turned the world upside down

...These who have turned the world upside down have come here too. Acts 17:6

In this time of revolutions, it is necessary to remember that it is not man that turns the world upside down but the power of the Gospel, God partnering with man and establishing His Kingdom.

The gospel has the power to change everything from individuals and families to whole communities, Government to social care, business to education. Every aspect of life as we know it can be changed through the power of the Living Word abiding in His people and working through them.

Pray God's mighty hand to be made known across the region.
Pray for a revelation of our Father's ever-present Love among believers.
Pray for God to raise up people who bring the Kingdom of God to every sphere of influence.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to abide in power.
Pray that God would make the wrong things right.
Pray that millions oppressed by the enemy will see the light of Christ and leap into His arms of Love.
Pray for justice against the forces of the enemy and mercy for the people of North Africa.
Pray for the will of God to be done.

Libya/Tunisia

Libya has remained on the headlines, and we want to encourage you to boldly intercede and declare God's word over this nation, that His glory might be revealed. Pray for the leaders of Tunisia (along with the rest of North Africa) to seek truth and justice as they prepare to establish a new Governmental structure. A change of Government does not guarantee change; it is the removal of the old spiritual powers and the establishing of the Kingdom of God that will bring true lasting change.

Pray for God to raise righteous leaders and for the Church to mobilize in prayer ahead of the elections.

Pray for Algerian Arab Peoples

The Algerian Arab People group is probably the largest people group in North Africa. Algerian Diaspora can be found globally but particularly in France. You can go to this link to find out more about them:

Pray for more laborers to be raised up from among that people, for persons of peace that will open their homes for the Gospel and for revelation of God's love.

Praise God for the Algerian Church license!

From a letter from two believers within Algeria:

PRAISE BE TO THE LIVING GOD! TO HIM BE THE GLORY!

On the 18th of July, the General Secretary of the Algerian Protestant Church (EPA) received from the Algerian Minister of Interior the full license to give the right and the freedom for all the Churches of the country affiliated with the EPA to worship and meet freely. This means that the Church is fully recognised by the government, and it will give the right for the local Church to develop their activities.

Please pray for:
  1. the registration of the local churches with the local authorities to go smoothly
  2. the total abolition of the March 2006 ordinances that are still affecting the freedom to evangelise and distribute Christian literature.
  3. a brother who has been sentenced for 5 years imprisonment because of his evangelism. He has appealed and his court case at the Supreme Court will take place on the 29th September. Please pray that he will be acquitted.
Egypt's Ongoing Revolution

There are reports from Egypt that religious extremists with a totalitarian agenda are trying to hijack the movement toward greater democracy and freedom for all. They are bound by their ideology and the deception of Satan who works through ideological strongholds in the mind to control large numbers of people. We have seen this in many places but also seen the Lord break through and shatter those grips over whole peoples through united prayer initiatives that He has used to change history, stopping wars, removing wicked leaders, etc.

Praise God that Egypt has a strong and discerning prayer movement that can see what is happening and pray authoritatively and unitedly for the overthrow of the principalities and powers that seek to enslave the Egyptian people again. It is not a flesh and blood conflict. Pray that extremist fanatics who are jockeying for power in the new Egypt will be unable to take power. Here is a reflection on what is happening from a Christian leader within Egypt:

"In the largest demonstration since toppling Hosni Mubarak's regime last February, more than a million Egyptians, mostly Muslim Salafis (fundamentalists) and Muslim Ikhwan (Muslim Brotherhood), appeared Friday, July 29. They shouted Islamic slogans, held banners and called for an Islamic Egypt at Tahrir square, the same square where the events of January 25th that shook the world took place early this year. The Muslim groups in Egypt came together in what they called "The Uniting Friday" after their major prayer on a Friday afternoon, calling for the law of Allah to be applied in Egypt...On that day, many of Egypt's people were deceived & were dancing with shouts of joy declaring, "We will celebrate and then start building our new Egypt." At that day, naively, no one expected Islamic slogans. They wanted a civil society that promotes religious freedom and human rights.

In today's demonstration, the facts started to be unfolded, mostly Islamic slogans were shouted:
  • "The Quran is our law and constitution."
  • "Egypt is our nation and Islam is our path."
  • "Islam victorious more and more and you, non-Muslims, must go."
  • "We will apply the law of Allah and whoever disobeys we will set their life to anguish and distress."
  • Egypt's people, yes, yes, all of them want the law of Allah."
Moreover, Sheikh Mazhar Shahin, the imam of the major mosque at Tahrir square, affirmed in his sermon at Friday's major prayer that those demonstrators at Tahrir square are the first core group to free Jerusalem from the infidels. Furthermore, Shahin emphasized that it is a fact that Egypt is a Muslim country, and its identity is none but Islamic, but the Copts are still to be considered "partners in this country."

What is going on in Egypt? No doubt that today, more than ever since Mubarak's toppling, Christians are concerned as well as moderate Muslims. The international society that was in favor of forcing Mubarak to resign appears now to be silent in front of the current groundbreaking news as if there is nothing to do to protect human rights in Egypt and to support the establishment of a secular democratic nation.

The Muslim moderate organizations in the West also seem to be silent in front of the rise and influence of Muslim fundamentalist groups in Egypt and turning their back to all the cries of the moderate people. There is a sharp dissonance between Muslim moderates and fundamentalists that is taking place now worldwide, and few seem to address it. Meanwhile, Christians are suffering in some places in the Middle East hearing all those hatred slogans.

In the West, there are voices that could give Muslim minorities their rights, or at least call for it. In the East, especially places like Egypt, who is defending the minorities' rights?

In the West, in most parts, one could hear the songs of peace and reconciliation among Muslims and Christians while people in Egypt heard the uncommon sounds of everyone but fundamentalist Muslims should leave.

The church is Egypt supported the revolution and was fantasizing or dreaming of great days to come, where Christians and Muslims can live in peace in one great nation! A dream that I still hope will come true one day."

Please pray for an open and fair society to emerge within Egypt that respects and upholds the rights of all, even the minorities. Pray that the people of the Lord will be strong and do exploits for Him in the midst of the continuing turmoil and uncertainty of the situation.
Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem, Sunday, October 2
jerusalem
We are urged to take seriously the Biblical responsibility of Psalm 122 to join millions of other believers in praying for Christ's peace to be upon Jerusalem and the inhabitants of Israel, both Jewish and Arab. As the Bible said it would, Jerusalem has become a cup of controversy on the global stage today (Zech. 12:2-3). One of the organizers writes:

"RIGHT NOW...there are increasing threats from many nations against God's covenant city, there are escalating tensions surrounding the inhabitants of the land of Israel, and there are ever-increasing global repercussions for all mankind because of the critical situation.

As these global challenges arise, however, GOD is present. His response has been to stir the hearts of Christians from China to Germany and from Kenya to Brazil, to raise their voices in fervent intercession with His Son, on behalf of Jerusalem and all her inhabitants, both Jew and Arab alike."

Pray 52 - A Year of Non-Stop Prayer for 52 Weeks in 52 Nations with Christian Minorities
man praying
Strategy: Every week, two nations are encouraged to mobilize all Christians to stand in the gap to pray for their nation: the national Christians, expats, missionaries and mission agencies working in that nation, and churches that are supporting missionaries in that nation. Every nation is encouraged to take 2 weeks of extra-ordinary and non-stopprayer for their nation, one week every 6 months.

Encouraging believers to come together in larger groups (where possible) to have extended times of prayer.
  • Encouraging believers to have prayer rooms or prayer watches where all 168 hours of the week can be covered in prayer.
  • Encourage Christians from other nations to send prayer teams to those nations during the specific week.
  • Every nation use all possible means to mobilize the church in their own country.
Prayer focus for the first 6 months: the Church
  1. Establishing new believers in Christ (Phil. 4:19)
  2. Salvation of unsaved and church that will take Matt. 28:19-20 seriously.
  3. An outpouring of the Spirit of Prayer and Supplication on the church (Zec. 12:10).
  4. That God will fill the church with the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 4:28-31; Eph. 5:18).
  5. For the church to reach out to the poor and needy as well as the social need and pain in their communities (Eph. 2:10; Isa. 58).
Prayer focus for the second 6 months: Godly leadership in the church and establishing of the kingdom of God in all spheres of society

The Response USA, August 7 - Excerpts from a Report by Joel Rosenberg
response people
"We need another Dunkirk," said Dr. James Dobson at Saturday's national day of prayer in Houston as he recounted the famous story and called American Christians to devote themselves to prayer and fasting. "God answers prayer." He is absolutely right.

What an encouraging day during such a discouraging week! Against the backdrop of a severe financial crisis and near-crippling political gridlock in Washington, the S&P's first-ever downgrade of American debt, the increasing prospect of a double-dip recession, and the terrible tragedy of the murder of 30 American special forces heroes in Afghanistan -- including operators from the Navy's SEAL Team Six -- more than 30,000 Americans gathered peaceably here yesterday to pray for the Lord to have mercy on our country. They joined together with evangelical Christians gathered at some 1,300 satellite viewing locations in all 50 states. They implored the Lord to spare us from the judgment our many sins deserve. They pleaded with the Lord to pour out His Holy Spirit and give us a Third Spiritual Awakening. They chose, too, to pray for the Lord to bless the State of Israel and the Jewish people, and prayed faithfully and passionately for the peace of Jerusalem.

"The Response" was no ordinary prayer meeting. Personally, I've never been to anything like it, and I was blessed by every minute of it. There were no political speeches. No entrance fees. No offering. No fund-raising appeal. No merchandise sold. No light show. No entertainment of any kind. This was simply seven straight hours of prayer and fasting, heartfelt contrition and repentance, Bible reading from the Book of Joel and many other Scriptures, and wonderful worship - both modern praise songs and beloved hymns - with every generation represented along with so many races and ethnic backgrounds. Let's do more of this...

How often do 30,000 American believers gather not for entertainment but simply to fast, pray and worship all day long? Yes, some feared the event was going to be political. But it wasn't. Yes, some feared what would be said or done would be theologically off base. But it wasn't. I know because I was there. I wish even more had been there, too. We need more pastors and ministry leaders to teach and follow the Book of Joel, not fewer. We need more officials to call for prayer and fasting and to be encouraged for doing so, not fewer.

I'm grateful to Texas Governor Rick Perry for helping call for this event to take place, for encouraging people from all over the country to participate, for standing his ground against intense liberal and atheist opposition and even a federal lawsuit (which was dismissed), and for speaking and praying at the event despite many calls for him not to do so. "

10/40 Window Sunday (October 2, 2011)
10-40
A special opportunity to focus prayer on a region of the world that is home to:
  • The majority of the world's Muslims, Hindus, and Buddhists
  • The majority of the world's least-reached people groups
  • The poorest of the poor (more than eighty of every 10 impoverished people)
  • 45 of the 50 nations where Christians are most persecuted.
When: The first Sunday of every October. This year, 10/40 Window Sunday will be celebrated on Sunday, October 2nd.

Where: In your home, with your small group, at church...Anywhere Christians gather to seek the Lord.

Why: Because the 10/40 Window is the "final frontier" of world missions. In order to finish the task given to the Church, we need to pray! "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you..."-the Bible, Matthew 28:19,20.

How: Mark Sunday, October 2, on your calendar. Tell your friends, family, small group, pastor....Plan to join with Window International Network and countless Christians around the globe in interceding for the 10/40 Window.

You don't have to wait until October. Start praying today! Visit us at www.win1040.com for nation profiles, prayer points, and to learn about how you can get involved in reaching the people of the 10/40 Window.

About International Prayer Connect (IPC)
OUR VISION:
"Compelled by God to seek Christ's glory worldwide for the blessing, healing, and transforming of the nations, International Prayer Connect exists as a coalition of prayer networkers and mobilizers working together to motivate, develop and equip national movements and local churches to fill all nations with prayer for the fulfillment of the Great Commandment and the completion of the Great Commission."

HOW WE OPERATE:
The IPC is not an organization as such. We are a fellowship of people involved in mobilizing prayer throughout the world. We function as an international "network of networks", connecting international, regional, and national prayer ministries and networks. We also arrange or support special prayer initiatives that bring prayer leaders together from time to time to pray for matters of regional and global concern to the Body of Christ. Regional prayer summits have been arranged or supported by the IPC in most regions of the world as well as international prayer initiatives for the United Nations, Hollywood, and other issues.

The IPC is led by an international leadership team, now called the International Prayer Council, is composed of twenty leaders who coordinate regional prayer networks or international prayer initiatives of various kinds. We seek to be catalysts and connectors within the global prayer movement towards the fulfillment of Habakkuk 2:14- that "the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea."

We do not have an official membership but connect with individuals and networks through IPCConnectionsa periodical newsletter distributed via e-mail to give prayer information to interested people. Please share this newsletter with prayer coordinators, prayer network leaders, and others who have an interest in the global prayer movement so that they can be informed about different prayer initiatives, existing prayer networks, and how to participate in them.
Donating to IPC through PayPal

9-11 ... Your Insights?

The cross installed on a pedestal at Ground Zero (Credit: Samuel Li via en.wikipedia.org)No religious elements will be included in New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's 9/11 commemoration service this Sunday.  Quotations and poems will be read by a variety of leaders, and the list of 9/11 victims will be read in its entirety.  Unfortunately, not a single prayer will be offered for the survivors of this tragedy, for our leaders, or for our nation.  Nor will a single religious leader be included in the event.

The mayor's decision is surprising, given his support for including the so-called Ground Zero Cross in the 9/11 Memorialand his defense of those who want to build a mosque and Muslim community center nearby.  It might be difficult to decide who should be included, as is the case for most public events.  But it is a mistake to allow no one to offer prayers or represent faith traditions at a ceremony for so many grieving families.

In response to the mayor's decision, Saddleback Church Pastor Rick Warren is planning a service at Lower Manhattan Community Church, a "daughter church" of Saddleback located two blocks from Ground Zero.  The "Hope & Freedom" eventwill be webcast live.  Manhattan pastor Ryan Holladay explained: "We want to give people an opportunity to process the anniversary from a spiritual perspective.  It wasn't just a national or civic tragedy, it was a spiritual tragedy."

He is absolutely right.  It is deeply troubling that the leader of our nation's largest city apparently believes religion to be so inconsequential to our culture and problems.  I cannot think of an event in recent history so indicative of America's escalating secularism.

How should Christians respond?  By viewing the mayor's decision as a call to action.  Christians are "the salt of the earth" and "the light of the world" (Matthew 5:13, 14).  Salt and light are powerful all out of proportion to their size.  History proves that just a few of us can make an historic impact on our nation.

A small gathering of believers at Pentecost sparked the most powerful spiritual movement in history (Acts 2:1-12).  Anunknown German monk living in a remote village initiated the Protestant Reformation.  A frontier preacher named Solomon Stoddard hosted prayer meetings that led to the First Great Awakening under the preaching of his grandson, Jonathan Edwards.  The spiritual awakening currently winning more people to Christ than ever before in history began in war-torn South Korea 50 years ago.

What do these catalytic events have in common?  They were led by people who were sold out to Jesus--men and women who were submitted to the Holy Spirit, grieving the secular state of their lost culture, determined to use their influence to serve their King.

Let's join them.

Student Adopts 30 Days on $30 Fast to Identify with Global Poor

LONDON, Sept. 2, 2011 /Christian Newswire/ -- "When you're really hungry, twenty-five-cent canned soup tastes like it came from a five-star restaurant," said Nathan Adair, 10 days into a 30-days-on-$30 fast.

Adair began his 30-day experiment to identify with the more than 1 billion people globally living on $1 a day or less. Adair hopes to raise awareness and money for a micro-enterprise project that will use solar energy to power an orphanage in India.

Adair became aware of the orphanage through friend, Kirby Trapolino. Trapolino is the director of Peace Gospel International, an organization that helps improve the lives of people in the developing world, including the children at Peace City orphanage in Ongole, India.

"To help generate revenue for the orphanage, we are helping design and procuring a solar energy system power the facility and charge batteries," Adair said. "Members of the community can then rent the batteries to power their homes, providing ongoing funds for the orphanage."

Adair reports that the first four days of his 30-day experiment were the most difficult.

"A combination of eating approximately 35 percent of the calories normally consumed and giving up caffeine made for a miserable beginning," he acknowledged; "However, the overwhelming support and prayer from my wife, family and friends gave me the resolve I needed to press on and not give up."

Other difficulties Adair mentioned include the logistics of planning daily menus, and a substantial lack of energy. However, Adair insisted it has all been worth the effort, because he is gaining a new understanding of how much of the world lives.

"People who live on $1/day or less see food as an essential fuel to stay alive, and they don't take that for granted," he noted.

Adair has chronicled his experience atindiasolarproject.blogspot.com, where he also posts his daily menu, and challenges readers to join him for one week of $1 a day living. Whether or not people participate, he hopes simply reading about his experience will opens reader's eyes to needs around the world.

"It's very humbling to think that at this very moment, kids are digging through trash looking for food," he said. I want people to realize our Western lifestyle is luxurious compared to most. I have been very blessed in this life, and I want to give back as much as possible."

It Seems to Me ... Prayer is a collaborative experience.

Another airport, another stop at the "news" store to look the latest issues of Macworld, Newsweek (I subscribe to Time), and Sporting News (my copy of Sports Illustrated is already in my briefcase) . . . but as I peruse the display, the cover of the July-August issue of the Harvard Business Review catches my eye:  Build a culture of trust and innovation. COLLABORATE

Even at $15.99 (the check out clerk warned me before she rang it up), it was a no-brainer.

The Holy Spirit is moving across the Body of Christ with a John 17 message of unity.

"I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one—I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me" (vv 22-23).

An admonition with a clear and direct application to evangelism that is empowering the city-reaching movements in communities large and small across the nation. Congregations, ministry organizations, marketplace leaders of influence, are asking "what can we do better, more effectively, together, than separate?" A movement from isolation, not merely in reaction to the social culture but from other Christ-centered churches and ministries, toward community impacting collaboration.

My excitement grew as I began to scan and read the feature articles:

--Are You a Collaborative Leader? . . . how great leaders keep their team connected
--Building a Collaborative Enterprise . . . how to create a culture of trust and teamwork
--Bringing Minds Together . . . collaboration among people who previously had no reason to work together

Each article had immediate benefit to my work of coordinating the coaches of Loving Our Communities to Christ, a catalytic and cooperative process of demonstrating and proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ across cities and communities. Sadly, especially the third one listed.

Fast forward a few weeks. Sitting on the sand facing the Atlantic ocean, trying to read the HBR in the blazing sun, suddenly it occurred to me. The prayer movement needs collaboration too. Joining forces, teaming up, banding together is not only for citywide evangelism, it is equally vital for the local church prayer leader in his or her approach to corporate prayer. After all, corporate means "to form into a body" and shouldn't each corporate prayer experience transform individuals, by the filling and leading of the Spirit, into a one-mind, one-voice choir of praise? [see: Acts 4:24: "they raised their voices together in prayer to God."]

When I facilitate a consultation or round table gathering, I often use the 20-20-20 format. Twenty minutes of presentation followed by 20 minutes of small group discussion then concluding with 20 minutes of all-group feedback (often called a debrief). Perhaps this format would help us turn around-the-circle and down-each-list corporate prayer into a dynamic experience ("a process or system stimulating development or progress"). How would it work?

Prayer is a collaborative experience

  • 20 minutes of collaborating through conversing. Begin by seeking to discern together what the Spirit saying to the group that should serve as the focal point of your praying. Seeking prayer utilizes questions. Instruct the pray-ers to ask for direction and wisdom and revelation, and to avoid making requests or supplication; that will take place in the second segment.

Whether the gathering is a small fellowship group or a large congregation, the prayer leader facilitates a time of both vertical prayer and horizontal dialog. Some of the time the group is in a listening prayer mode. Some of the time the facilitator is asking if anyone has a scripture (for example, this may surface in a group that is devoted to praying for lost persons or serving needs in the community -- "Pray that I may proclaim the gospel clearly, as I should" [Colossians 4:4]) or a statement (in a study group -- "The Bible was written to change our lives, not increase our knowledge" could focus prayer on "Being transformed by the renewing of our minds" [Romans 12:2])

Is the Lord speaking through silence or calling for silence (listening prayer)?

"Father, are there "pslams, hymns or spiritual songs" you want us to sing to you or to sing as our petitions or declarations?

Is there a story (testimony) of someone who has experienced a trial or testing or tirumph that would encourage the group and become a headline for prayer?

While the first segment qualifies as prayer, the primary aim is to collaborate toward receiving the inspiration and instruction of the Spirit for the second segment by simply talking to God and one another.

  • 20 minutes of collaborating through communing

The prayer leader facilitates a transition from seeking to speaking and singing and the praying of scripture.

Clearly identify the headline or focus the group has discerned in the first segment and ask everyone to launch their prayers from that scripture or statement or story. Set the course.

As the group presents their requests to the Lord, the prayer leader needs to help the corporate body stay on course. Remind them of the path, if they take an off-ramp. Redirect them gently if they somehow detour. Refocus their attention if they head in a totally different direction.

  • 20 minutes of collecting through commenting

While this will be a horizontal discussion (participants are asked to share their experience), it is still, technically, prayer. Listening to one another is a way to hear what the Spirit has said through our prayers in the second segment. We asked questions, discerned what to pray, then prayed what we heard. But, whenever we pray what is on God's heart, we discover in our response new depths of the mind of Christ or an unexpected passion in our petitions. Debriefing what we experienced (heard, said, leaned, observed, a new question or fresh insight) always cements learning and takes us on a new adventure.

This segment has much "vertical" potential even though participants will not have every eye closed and every head bowed.

The prayer leader makes certain the group discusses (and hopefully determines) what God has said as we spoke to Him and what He intends us to do about it--action steps that may make us the answer to our own prayers.

Consider collecting everyone's thoughts as they comment on a white board or on a computer projected on a screen. This information may be a good beginning to the next prayer gathering.

It seems to me, many of those missing from our prayer gatherings (or silent when they are present) would welcome conversing with the Lord, communing with open another, and ollecting spiritual insights-- if only they knew we believe that prayer is a collaborative experience.

On September 11, 2011 we have what I believe is an unprecedented opportunity to mobilize the American church toward prayer for a new spiritual Awakening. 9-11-11 will be the 10th anniversary of the attacks on America and is also on a Sunday this year. Spiritual energy and public awareness will be very high for 9-11, especially considering the continued crises we face as a nation. On this historic Sunday, we are requesting that local churches commit to a moment of remembrance and prayer during their Sunday service as part of Cry Out America. We are also encouraging county public prayer gatherings to take place across the nation and we anticipate over 1,000 counties participating this year with every county whose population is over 1 million (38 of these) already scheduled.

Hundreds of churches have already registered to unite in prayer on 9-11 and I would deeply appreciate your help in calling your network of ministries to join us. Would you please consider an email blast to your list of local churches and ministries asking them to join this effort on 9-11 this year? In addition, I am asking you to consider placing a banner on your website announcing this initiative.

Please follow this link to a simple email template that can be modified and sent to your email list or your technical team to connect to your ministry’s email system: http://awakening-america.s3.amazonaws.com/Email%20Templates/churchemail.jpg

Please follow this link to the website banner which can be modified and placed on your website:

When a church registers to pray during Cry Out America they will receive free resources to help in preparation for that day and be connected with other churches in their county who are also praying on this unique Sunday. We are not requesting that a local church dedicate their entire Sunday gathering to prayer for our nation, though many are doing this. We are asking simply that at some point in their service they have focused prayer for America.

Hundreds of churches have already signed up to Cry Out on 9-11 and we believe that with all of us working together this could be one of the greatest days of local church, united prayer in America's history. I still believe that through united, extraordinary prayer, judgment can be averted, healing can be realized and a new awakening can be witnessed in our generation.

Your partnership and help for Cry Out America this year is deeply appreciated. Please let me know how we can serve you further as we continue.

Uniting Together for America's Future,

. . . your prayer team needs more fathering.

It had been some time since I had been asked to preach a Father's Day message, and though I welcomed the opportunity, I was a little disappointed I would not be able to focus on prayer as the guest preacher. The text the Lord gave me allowed me to zero in on fathers but as the message unfolded, I realized the actions identified were extremely applicable to every Christian as they sought to disciple not only the children in their family but anyone in their sphere of ministry (small group, Sunday school class, or youth group). Now, weeks after that sermon, I am recognizing how the text has important applications to our role as prayer leaders.

Ever prayer champion, whether the prayer coordinator or the senior pastor, would do well to review their recent ministry (and set their future course!) along the Apostle Paul's teaching in 1 Thessalonians: “For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children,  encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory” (2:11-12).

Paul challenges us to model our discipleship of the believers in our care (from our own children to small group or ministry team members) on the best practices of a father so that they "live good lives for God, who calls you to his glorious kingdom" (NCT). Like bookends, the admonition to take our discipleship role seriously (“You remember us in those days, friends, working our fingers to the bone, up half the night, moonlighting so you wouldn't have the burden of supporting us while we proclaimed God's Message to you.” (NCT) and the long-term objective ("the kind of life that pleases God" Good News) hold together three strategic components vital to their growth in Christ.

Every prayer champion is going to cast a praying church vision for their team and every prayer leader will diligently train his or her team members in intercession, spiritual warfare, healing ministry, and community impacting praying. Prayer focused retreats, concerts of prayer, solemn assemblies are all calendar staples. Prayer lists, prayer cards, prayer requests are found in every bulletin or Bible. But Paul is reminding us that our job description includes more than planning events or providing resources. As he told Pastor Timothy, “You should teach people whom you can trust the things you and many others have heard me say.” Why? “Then they will be able to teach others” (NCV). Near the top of the list for every church prayer leaders is the responsibility to disciple praying people who can disciple others in all things prayer.

And Paul explains how. By encouraging. Comforting. Urging.

Encourage: The term Paul employs is the same Greek word John uses to describe the Holy Spirit (John 16:6), indicating “one who comes alongside.” Encouraging is more than cheering for someone; it is the intentional act of standing by the person in our stewardship. Prayer leadership is a relationship approach to discipleship.

It is interesting to note that this Greek term is translated in at least half a dozen different ways, as biblical translators seek to capture the fullness of this many nuanced word:

Comforter – one who comes alongside in our sadness, grief
Counselor – with wisdom, understanding
Encourager – giving confidence, faith to be brave
Helper (NCV) – responding in all things practical
Advocate (NIV) – one-who-sticks-up-for-you- against bullies/judgment
Intercessor – one who prays for your heartsick issues when you cannot
Strengthener – makes you strong enough to sit, stand or scale (a wall)
Standby – stands next to you; never leave you or forsake you
Friend – one who does all of the above!

Comfort: The English etymology is a combination of intense force (“com”) and strong (“fort”). To comfort is much more than cheering up someone when they are sad; to comfort is to fortify, to literally build a fort around the person. Prayer leaders work hard to strengthen those in their ministry care.

Urge: Going beyond insisting, this term also infers a father would declare and testify to the truth that would motivate an intercessor to aspire to a God worthy life.

Obviously, these fathering traits and tasks are gender neutral responsibilities of everyone who champions and coordinates prayer. And, equipping the saints in the work of prayer includes encouraging, comforting and urging. Standing-by to fortify so that each one we work with aims to glorify God and His Kingdom.

It seems to me . . . your prayer team might need more fathering.

Prayer Initiative Organized for 9/11 Anniversary

COA_NewLogoWhile preparing the kids for another school year, you may add joining in united prayer to your to-do list.

In the months leading up to the 10-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Assemblies of God and the Awakening American Alliance are working to make their Cry Out America prayer initiative a top priority.

The partnering groups believe that just as America was “shaken to its foundation” 10 years ago, the country needs to be shook again—this time with a Christ Awakening.

With a recessed economy, a dissolving church attendance and lack of absolute truth, united prayer seems to be the preferred means to battle America's critical spiritual condition.

John Maempa, director of the Office of Prayer and Spiritual Care says: “Desperate times call for desperate measures. We must seek God as never before for the moral and spiritual well-being of our nation. Pray that a powerful move of the Holy Spirit will transform our churches to become transformational in the culture.”

Masses continue to hear the cliche that history repeats itself and the Awakening America Alliance seems to agree with the phrase. The Tennessee-based organization's website states, “The historical patterns of America’s Great Awakenings indicate that it is in precisely this type of seemingly hopeless national environment that God chooses to move in response to the cries of His people.”

Pastors, volunteering county coordinators, believers and churches, regardless of denomination, will organize prayer gatherings. Some have even began the initiative earlier this month and will continue through Sept. 11, taking on 10 consecutive weeks of community prayer. Regardless of length, either 10 weeks, one day, or anywhere in between, supporters seek to follow structured prayer guides to return strengthen America's biblical foundation and to pray for the Holy Spirit to touch “every state, every county and every heart.”

Friending: Real Relationships in a Virtual World

By Lynne M. Baab

My friend began what he called a hikoi. Hikoi is a Marori word that refers to a ceremonial walk, a parade or a protest walk. Numerous political and religious marches in New Zealand have been referred to as hikoi.

This man's hikoi consisted of an hour-long vigil every Monday and Thursday night for (me). He used the Bible reading for the day from the lectionary  and he meditated on those scriptures and prayed for (me).

The best part for (me) was what happened on Tuesday and Fridays. I would get an email with his thoughts and prayer  ... for me and my wife on our journey. So far, there have been 84 messages. HIs faithfulness is a thing of great beauty and promise.

 A special message to our
Great Commission Coalition and Houston Prays friends

The Response USA:
1. what's happening
2. who's coming
3. why it's important
4. goals for the event
5. prayer targets

Dear Phil,

By now you've no doubt heard about The Response, a solemn assembly at Houston's Reliant Stadium on Saturday, August 6. The Governor of Texas, Rick Perry, has called for it. He's personally invited all 49 other governors to join him. This is unprecedented. But many have asked, "Is this some kind of political ploy?"
Here's what I know. Several of those planning The Response are personal friends. They've had lots of questions too. But, like me, their questions have been answered. I have confidence in their leadership and integrity. After initiating, Governor Perry submitted the program to them. Many from Houston Prays are engaged.

On a conference call with the governor and the program leaders the other day, three goals of the day were shared: 1. The name of Jesus only will be exalted; 2. People will leave with a desire to pray more; 3. Politicians will be glad they came. No stump speeches. No sermonizing. Just a day to call out to God, acknowledging our dependence on him and asking him to help us and heal our nation.

Will the Response will be everything I'd like it to be? I can't answer that. Will it stretch some of us out of our comfort zones? Probably. Do I think it's important for us to be there and to encourage others to join us? Absolutely. I've seen first hand what God will do when his people humble themselves before him in united prayer. That's why I'm writing you today.

You can hear from others at the link below. You'll also find a bunch of resources from bulletin inserts to hyperlinks. Take a few minutes to check it out. Then ask God what he would have you do.

Steve Riggle is pastor at Grace Community Church in Houston. We became friends 30 years ago in the San Francisco Bay Area. Steve moved to Houston to start Grace. God brought Mercy and I here a decade later and we reconnected with Steve and Becky.

I've learned something about Steve in those 30 years. He believes in prayer. His church has a culture of prayer. Steve told his congregation recently, "There are times when we need to show up and this is a showing up time." He was referring to The Response. They've set a goal - to mobilize 5,000 members of their church family to attend The Response. They're well on their way. 2,100 have signed up already.

How about you? Have you registered? Have you set a goal to mobilize
Relianta team to join you at The Response? Some churches and networks outside of Houston are planning caravans.

Reliant Stadium has 70,000 seats. Won't it be great if it isn't big enough! I've seen that happen overseas. Potential overflow venues are being secured. For others unable to come to Houston, The Response is                              planning Live Simulcast and Streaming. I hope you don't miss this.

Three Major Goals For
The Response:

1. The name of Jesus only will be exalted

2. People will leave with a desire to "pray more"

3. Government officials will be glad they came

Prayer Targets for
The Response:

1. Unity and humility of the Church - John 17:21-23

2. God's Presence to visit us - Ex. 33:14-16

3. A Spirit of prayer to enfold us - Zech. 12:10

4. Wisdom and favor for leaders before, during and following the event - Isa. 11:2-3

Tozer: Experience; what it is.

Great quote came in an email:

" Why are so many Christian believers ineffective, anemic, disappointed, discouraged? I think the answer is that we need confirmation within ourselves, and we are not getting it.

I have no doubt that God, in love and grace and mercy, awaits to confirm His presence among those who will truly hunger and thirst after righteousness. For a long while I have been on record insisting that true spiritual experience is conscious awareness, illustrated early in the Old Testament by Abram's personal realization and knowledge of the presence of God.

In the Christian Church, genuine spiritual experience goes back to the apostles---actually back to our Lord Himself. I do not refer to a dream while a person sleeps. I do not refer to something a person has buried in his or her subconsciousness. I refer to a conscious intelligence, an awareness.

The human personality has a right to be consciously aware of a meeting with God. There will be a spiritual confirmation, an inward knowledge or witness.

I repeat: Experience is conscious awareness. This kind of confirmation and witness was taught and treasured by the great souls throughout the ages.

Conscious awareness of the presence of God! I defy any theologian or teacher to take that away from the believing church of Jesus Christ .But be assured they will try. And I refer not just to the liberal teachers. God has given us the Bible for a reason. That reason is so it can lead us to meet God in Jesus Christ in a clear, sharp encounter that will burn on in our hearts forever and ever!

Genuine Christian experience must always include an encounter with God Himself. The spiritual giants of old were those who at so some time became acutely conscious of the presence of God. They maintained that consciousness for the rest of their lives.

Summertime, And The Living Is Easy…

Many small groups take a summer break. Now is the time to plan how you'll stay in touch during the months you aren't meeting.

Which of these ideas might work for your group?

• Set up a prayer chain that will keep you linked together through intercession.

• Before you break for the summer, set a date and place for a mid-summer potluck picnic or cookout.

• Plan a weekend camping trip for the entire group.

• Select a book (preferably a skinny one) that each person commits to read over the summer. When you regather in the fall, spend your first meeting discussing what you learned.

• Discuss in May what summer projects you hope to accomplish (reroof the house, can your own vegetables, build a sandbox for the kids, etc.). How can you team up and help each other reach your goals?

• Make a date to have brunch together after church on the first Sunday of June, July, and August.

Please comment below . . . what's worked? a related resources? a good summertime book?
