Hearing God Speak

By Lowell Snow – www.leadingprayer.com

Part 5 - Eliminate the Excuses

In previous newsletters; (available in the archives of the leadingprayer web site) we completed segments one through four of this series on Hearing God Speak:

  • In the introduction, Examine your Expectations, we realized that God speaks to all of us, but may not be saying what we expect or want to hear.
  • In Come to Christ, we looked at salvation as the first step of a conversational relationship with Him.
  • In Master the Minors, we considered some foundational disciplines of life that may seem ‘minor’, but must be mastered before higher plateaus can be reached.
  • In Consider the Content, we learned to examine the content of the message to know if it’s a word from God or something else.

In this final segment we’ll see that we must Eliminate the Excuses that allow hidden sins to interfere with our ability to hear God speak.

You’re listening to your favorite radio program as you travel in your car. Just as the commentator or musician gets to the part you’re most interested in – bzzz, crackle, hisss. You pass a power line or tall building and the interference drowns out the program. You miss the best part. What a bummer.

Radio interference can come from lots of places, but the spiritual interference that comes between you and God often comes from within you.

But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. James 1:14-15 NKJV

There’s that word again – sin – it just won’t go away. Just when you think you’ve reached some level of spiritual maturity – Bam! – It gets you again. It may be the return of an old sin or you may be blind-sided by a temptation you never saw coming. Where does it all come from? Well it doesn’t all come from the devil. Some of it’s your own doing.

I was to lead a conference in a rural church many miles from the nearest motel so the church set up a camper for Peggy and me to stay in. The nice lady who owned it met us and showed us how everything worked. This was no ordinary camper. Leather furniture, HD TV, fireplace. Really nice.

It had one problem the lady said; the surround sound system made strange sounds. I suggested that we’d just leave it off, but she said it didn’t matter. Even when it was off these crazy sounds would just come and go. Kind of spooky I thought, but we assured her that this minor blemish in her beautiful camper would be no problem.

That night as Peggy and I were settling in, sure enough, these really eerie sounds filled the camper. About the time I was thinking maybe the drive to a motel in town might be a good idea, I realized that the sounds were familiar. They were the same sounds that emanate from my computer when I lay my cell phone next to the speakers.

I went to the living room and there it was – my cell phone was lying on the shelf right by the sound system. I picked it up and the problem was solved. That nice lady had a habit of laying her purse, with cell phone, on that same convenient shelf. The problem had never been the camper. She was causing the problem all along and didn’t know it.

You’ve probably got sinful habits in your life that keep distracting you from hearing all that God wants to say. Perhaps you’ve been convincing yourself for many years that they’re really not that bad. You’ve got to stop making excuses and let the Father complete what He began in you when you were saved. Jesus said:

Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect. Matt 5:48 NKJV

You’re excusing yourself from that statement of Christ right now aren’t you? You’re trying to figure out some loop-hole so that perfect doesn’t apply to God’s plan for you right now. Maybe you should open your Bible to that passage from the Sermon on the Mount and be reminded just how high Jesus set the bar. Here’s a short list:

  • love your enemies,
  • bless those who curse you,
  • do good to those who hate you,
  • and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you

Jesus is world famous for His mercy to sinners, but He’s also relentless in His pursuit of holiness. Have you ever considered how much emphasis Jesus places on mind over body in the Sermon on the Mount? He says it’s not enough to refrain from murder, we must refrain from hate. It’s not enough to refrain from adultery, we must refrain from lust. Hate and lust are battles that take place in the gray matter just above your eyeballs.

In our study of hearing God speak, we’ve come to the final frontier – the battle for your mind. You will eventually learn to think as Jesus thinks. Only then will your communication with the Heavenly Father be unrestricted.

So what’s your excuse for being lazy in your private devotions, lustful in your secret thoughts, hateful in your undisclosed grudges, greedy in your hidden desires, prideful in your covert ambitions, and arrogant in your unseen indulgences? What if next Sunday morning at your church, every person had a screen placed on their back that displayed every thought that came to their mind. The altar would be full of humiliated Christians begging for God’s forgiveness and help. Instead, 99% of folks who walk into church walk out an hour later unrepentant with their secret sins still safely hidden.

Hidden from fellow church goers, but not from God. And that’s where the rub comes isn’t it. The closer you grow to Him; the more violent the war becomes in your mind. The fairy-tale notions of walking hand in hand with Christ through a garden of roses have failed you. You thought that once you overcame the sins of the flesh; the Christian life would be easy, but it’s not. Increasingly God allows you to come face to face with the reality that He is not your fairy-god-mother. He’s Jehovah who demands perfection even in your thoughts and will stop at nothing to accomplish it.

Make no mistake follower of Christ. It is not up to you. Let me say that again – It’s not up to you. You can’t do it. Only God can accomplish holiness and He will purge you of all, even unseen, vestiges of unrighteousness. You can resist and complain, but He will not be deterred. Your best alternative is to be like Paul in his response to God’s refusal to remove his thorn in the flesh:

Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Cor 12:10 NKJV

James, the brother of Christ, who was once impatient with Jesus’ lack of interest in making public appearances for publicity, eventually learned this same lesson:

My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. James 1:2-4 NKJV

Both of these men had come to understand that righteousness did not come by any ability, effort, or even commitment on their part; but God working through their difficulties to change the way they thought. Don’t get confused. We’re not talking about salvation of the sinner, but perfection of the saint. These are the final stages of the Christian walk in which faith is without doubt, prayer is unhindered, and day to day holiness is the norm.

Not there yet? Me neither. But someday you will be – not by the strength of your will, but the power of His Spirit. Stop resenting your struggles and embrace them as tools that the Father is using to make you more and more like His son.

Meditate on each of the twenty words in the following prayer by reading the verse twenty times and putting emphasis on each successive word. Do all twenty and read it out loud if possible.

Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, And in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom. Ps 51:6 NKJV

So what sins persist in your inward hidden parts that need to be eliminated? There’s a good chance you don’t even know all of them – but God does. And He’s going to get rid of them one way or another before you walk through the pearly gates. It will go much better if you willingly let go of them as soon as He convicts you of them rather than clinging to them until He forces them out in the open and stomps them like the cockroaches of spiritual darkness that they are.

Consider this prayer:

Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Ps 139:23-24a KJV

Are you willing to pray that prayer asking God to reveal sins in your secret life that are a hindrance to Him leading you on in the way everlasting? If so, pray it in much the same way you read the Psalms 51 verse before. Pray it twenty times, emphasizing successively the words in ‘bold’.

Search me , O God, and know my heart:

try me , and know my thoughts:

And see if there be any wicked wayin me,

and lead me in the way everlasting.

What did He reveal? What are you going to do? Make an excuse or repent?

July 4th Prayer Time

By Lowell Snow – www.leadingprayer.com

Celebrate our nation's declaration of independence by declaring our dependence on God.

Guiding the prayer time:

  • As you lead the prayer time - [Don’t read the instructions in brackets out loud]
  • As printed, the prayer time takes a little over nine minutes. One minute can be saved by removing the visualization.
  • Click here for suggestions on making the prayer time more effective.

[Introduction]

“As followers of Christ we’ve come together today to worship God.

“As Americans, on this fourth day of July, we celebrate our declaration of independence as a nation. Sadly, America seems to be declaring independence from God as well. Consider our nation’s independent attitude toward God’s Ten Commandments upon which the very fabric of our nation was built.

[Meditation:]

"Commandment one: You shall have no other gods before Me. – Yet America has declared independence from God by systematically removing Him from our schools, media, and government institutions.

“Commandment two: You shall not make for yourself a carved image...(to) bow down to them nor serve them. – Yet today, Americans declare their independence from God by ‘idolizing’ everything from rock starts to new cars.

“Commandment three: You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. - Yet today Americans declare their independence from God by using His name in vain constantly.

“Commandment four: Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. – Yet today Americans declare their independence from God by working and doing commerce on Sunday like any other day.

“Commandment five: Honor your father and your mother. – Yet today America has declared its independence from God by allowing a child to have two parents of the same sex and neither honorable.

“Commandment six: You shall not murder. – Yet today America has declared its independence from God by making it legal to murder a fully developed child as it is being born.

“Commandment seven: You shall not commit adultery. – Yet today Americans declare their independence from God by accepting adultery as a ‘mistake’ rather than a sin.

“Commandment eight: You shall not steal. – Yet today America has declared its independence from God by granting state governments a license to steal through the age old con called the lottery.

“Commandment nine: You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. – Yet today Americans declare their independence from God by lying habitually. Ask any policeman, insurance agent, or tax collector.

“Commandment ten: You shall not covet. - Yet today America has declared its independence from God by accepting greed as a virtue that fuels success.” [Exodus20: 1-17 NKJV]

[wait one second]

“Please bow your heads and close your eyes as we pray for our nation’s return to dependence on God and obedience to His commandments.

[wait 3 seconds]

[Visualization: can be left out to save one minute]

“In the sixth century BC the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem and carried its inhabitants away as slaves. With your eyes closed; imagine yourself standing outside Jerusalem watching those people being led away into slavery. As they walk by, they look back one last time. Look at their eyes. They can’t believe what they see – The great city of God is in flames.

“God had warned them over and over that ignoring His law would bring judgment, but they didn’t believe it.

“Are Americans just as misguided? Do we think Almighty God doesn’t hold us to the same standards He’s held every nation in history?

“America is blessed by God because it was built on the foundation of the Ten Commandments. Today those foundations are crumbling and our nation needs revival.

[wait one second]

[Guided silent prayer]

“Lets begin our prayer by giving praise and thanksgiving to God who has so richly blessed us. With your heads bowed and eyes closed; pray silently and praise God for the blessings He’s given this nation. Whatever you can think of that is good and wonderful about America, praise God for it silently.

[wait one second]

“The natural wonders – liberty – the Constitution – the founding fathers – whatever comes to mind.

[wait five seconds]

“Now thank Him for the good things in your life.

[wait two seconds]

“Your family, possessions, job – whatever comes to mind. Thank Him silently.

[wait five seconds]

“Before we ask God to bless our nation, we need to confess our sin to Him, both for ourselves and our nation.

“First, is there anything in your life that you need to apologize to God for? Something you’ve said, done, or thought which was not pleasing to Him.

[wait two seconds]

“Be humble before Him now. Don’t make excuses or blame someone else. Silently confess it to Him and humbly ask His forgiveness.

[wait five seconds]

“As followers of Christ; we are the salt and light for this nation so let’s intercede in prayer for the sins of our country.

[wait two seconds]

“Praying silently, apologize to God for the way Americans constantly use His name in vane – in conversation – on TV and radio.

[wait five seconds]

“Apologize for the way our nation ignores Him on Sunday.

[wait five seconds]

“Apologize to Him for the millions of abortions that have taken place here. Tell him your feelings and grief over the torturous deaths of these unborn children.

[wait five seconds]

“Apologize to Him for the epidemic of adultery and divorce in our society.

[wait five seconds]

“Apologize to Him for the pornography produced in our nation and dispersed around the world.

[wait five seconds]

“Now let’s ask for His help.

[wait two seconds]

“First, let’s pray silently and ask Him to raise up preachers of great intellect and character to communicate the Word of God with clarity and power to this generation.

[wait three seconds]

“Pray that our nation will realize how sinful our actions have become.

[wait three seconds]

“Pray for a revival of prayer and righteousness in the churches of America.

[wait three seconds]

“Now we’ll pray for God’s help with the great challenges our country is facing. Please pray silently the words I pray out loud.

“Father, our country is facing great challenges. The recession, the oil spill, the the war in Afghanistan, and the list goes on and on. We need your help. We are prideful people, but in our hearts; we know that every step we take - every breath we breathe - is a gift from you.

“We pray for those who’ve lost their jobs.

[wait one second]

“We pray for those who’ve lost their homes and life savings.

[wait one second]

“We pray for those along the gulf who's way of life is being destroyed.

[wait one second]

“We pray for those who are fighting the oil spill.

[wait one second]

“We pray for the soldiers fighting the war on terrorism, especially in Afghanistan.

[wait one second]

“Father, help us be good Americans. Help us be salt and light to this great land. Help us have the courage to stand up for the right and live for you even if everyone around us does not.

[wait one second]

“Help us be people of faith and right living. To put character before popularity – family before fame – faith before success - and grace before winning.

[wait three seconds]

[Benediction:]

“Praise be to the Lord God...

who alone does marvelous deeds.

Praise be to his glorious name forever;

may the whole earth be filled with his glory.

In Jesus name, Amen and Amen.”

[Ps. 72:18-19 NIV]

More help guiding the prayer time:

If this is the first time you’ve led a guided prayer time; read over sections 1 and 3 in Prayer Guide – A Manual for Leading Prayer; listen to a guided prayer time on my web site, DVD, or CD; and then practice reading this one out loud. Feel free to copy it into your word processor and edit it however you want.

If you’ve led this type of prayer time before, use your own words and just follow the outline.

If you’re leading a worship service; you might ask for instrumental music to be played very softly in the background. This background music should not have a recognizable melody. Some musicians can play beautiful chord progressions that work well. Others will find it easier to play the chords of an unfamiliar hymn or song.

The prayer time should come at the heart of worship with at least one song before and after. Try to eliminate ‘dead time’ before and after the prayer time. Click here for more help or see Appendix 2 in the back of the Prayer Guide book.

As you lead the prayer time - [Don’t read the instructions in brackets out loud]

Don't read too fast. As printed, the prayer time takes a little over nine minutes. One minute can be saved by removing the visualization.

For the next few minutes let’s give our attention to the Lord Jesus Christ who’s death and resurrection changed our lives and gives us hope every moment of every day.“In a minute, we’ll all pray silently, but first, listen to this First Peter 1:3.[Meditation:]Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, [1 Peter 1:3 NIV]Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,…He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,[Visualization]“With your eyes closed, imagine the garden where Jesus was buried. It’s beautiful even in the dim light of early morning. The Roman soldiers guarding the tomb are agitated because they've been told that this is the day the followers of Jesus are likely to attempt to steal his dead body - and what better time to attack than just before dawn. Swords are drawn – spears at the ready.“The air grows stagnate. The ground trembles. Lightning flashes, but instead of thunder; the earth groans and heaves. The trees shudder and bow. The whole garden is lifted and dropped again and again. Great stones split and explode with a deafening roar.“The soldiers are thrown to the ground, but as they scramble for their weapons; the earth falls silent. All that’s left of this horror is the silent lightning. When they jump to their feet, they are facing a warrior like none they've ever imagined.“He's surrounded by light so dazzling it defies words. Perhaps not light at all but the essence of glory. He’s easily the mass of three soldiers and hovers several feet off the ground. A gleaming sword is in one hand and a golden shield in the other.“There is no battle. The soldiers faint in terror. The angel sheathes his sword and moves to the tomb. He settles to the ground by the great stone that covers the entrance to the tomb. He falls to his knees and brushes it aside. He waits - head bowed - arms outstretched.[wait 2 seconds]“From within the tomb a nail pierced hand extends and touches the angle’s outstretched arm.[wait 3 seconds]“Hope. What greater picture of hope than that nail pierced hand extended from the very shadows of death?[Suggestion]“With your head still bowed and eyes closed, imagine that you approach the tomb just as Jesus Christ steps out. You fall on your knees and join the angel in worship of the savior. What will you say?[wait 2 seconds]“It was your sinfulness that put Him in the tomb – so I suggest that you humbly confess your sins. No excuses. Be humble before Him now.[wait 10 seconds]“Imagine that those sins are a bundle of guilt in your hands. Jesus reaches down, takes that horrible mess in His nail scarred hands and throws it into the darkness of the empty tomb.[wait 3 seconds]“Then He takes your hands in His and the stains of sin are instantly gone. He lifts you up and you stand before Him.[wait 2 seconds]“Thank Him silently now for this forgiveness.[wait 3 seconds]“Thank Him for dying on the cross for you.[wait 3 seconds]“Thank Him for enduring the tomb for you.[wait 3 seconds]“Thank Him for the hope of eternal life.[wait 3 seconds]“Thank Him that you no longer have to fear the shadow of death.[wait 3 seconds]“Now imagine that you and Jesus begin to walk away from the tomb. Jesus asks you about your friends and family that have not yet experienced His forgiveness.[wait 2 seconds]“Pray silently now for several people you know that don’t have the joy of the Lord in their lives. Ask Jesus to help you share that joy with them.[wait 10 seconds]“Now pray for the person to your left and right - whether you know them or not. Pray that God will bless them today.[wait 4 seconds][Benediction]Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, 21 make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever.
