By Sing Oldham

Phil Miglioratti opened the winter leadership meeting of PrayerLink asking whether Southern Baptists are more interested in developing prayer guides (booklets and other resources about prayer) or prayer guides (individuals in congregations who help guide church members to be prayer warriors in the house of God).

Drawing his lesson from the purification of Jesus recorded in Luke 2, Miglioratti pointed to two individuals in Scripture who serve as prayer guides for twenty-first century believers—Anna and Simeon.

These two relatively obscure characters in the overall narrative of Scripture were “led by the Spirit to step up at just the right moment to announce God’s redemptive moment,” Miglioratti, prayer consultant for the Illinois Baptist State Association and national coordinator of Loving Our Communities to Christ, said.

Noting that we know nothing about them beyond this single instance, Miglioratti observed that Anna and Simeon both frequented the house of God and were devoted to the Lord in prayer.

“It is interesting to note that Luke 2:40 follows Luke 2:22–39,” he added.

Luke 2:40 states that Jesus grew up and became strong, filled with wisdom, and God’s grace was on Him.

“We cannot underestimate the power of prayer on people’s lives,” Miglioratti noted, urging the PrayerLink leadership team to focus its ministry objectives on creating “Luke 2:40 followers of Jesus”—those who grow strong in the Lord, who are filled with the Spirit, and who reflect the grace of God in how they live their lives.

I just wanted to share my children's new ministry...You are invited...and encouraged...to join our family in this prayer movement! Please agree with us "that our God may make us worthy of His calling, and that by His power He may bring to fruition our every desire for goodness and our every deed prompted by faith." (2 Thessalonians 1:11 paraphrase from NIV)

The Green Bean Movement for a Better World

So often, many of us may "feel a frustration" that, due to circumstances beyond our control, we are "hindered" from doing BIG things for God. I propose that we CAN do BIG things for God in little ways. We, for example, are "just a family with many of the same struggles as many others." "Dad" works very hard to pay for the children's education, "Mom" struggles with chronic sickness, and "kids" work very hard in their classes. What can we do for God? Without getting "Dad" further into debt, "Mom" further into chronic sickness, and "kids" further into "work overload," we are doing what we can to do BIG things for God in little ways. One of those little ways is just simply praying while eating. We ALL need nutrition, regardless of our family and individual circumstances, so we encourage you to join us on our journey to do BIG things for God in little ways!

Through something as simple as praying while eating green beans, a vegetable that may be well-liked in your home, but unfortunately, is not-so-well-liked in our home, we are expecting God to make a better world, and ultimately, glorify Himself through drawing all people to Himself. Green beans are the "underdeveloped fruit" of the plant on which they grow, so, by making our faith tangible, we are choosing to eat green beans, the vegetable that is so not pleasing to our taste buds, and praying for God to "develop" them into the "good fruit" that He has given each of us a passion for.

In our home, as we dish out and eat our green beans, one of us, who has a passionate desire to end modern-day slavery, is praying that God would end modern-day slavery and supernaturally provide the funding for the wonderful, Godly organizations that seek to further the abolition of that horrific injustice. Another, whose desire is to end abortion, is showing faith by eating green beans and praying that God would end abortion and supernaturally provide the funding for the wonderful, Godly organizations that seek to further the abolition of that horrific slaughter. Another very obedient, "I'm only choosing to eat green beans for this prayer movement," green bean eater, who loves watching wholesome, Christian entertainment, is praying that God would "develop" much "good fruit" through Christian television and movies and supernaturally provide the necessary funding to the wonderful, Godly filmmakers in order to make that happen. Additionally, the largest consumer of green beans in our home (that would be the vegetable-conscious, prayer warrior in our home), is praying for God to bring "good fruit" and supernatural funding to ALL of those necessary prayer causes, and also adds a prayer for God to make a better world by sending an awakening and a revival!

"God...gives life to the dead and calls into being that which does not exist." (Romans 4:17 NASB) Therefore, whatever is dead or not yet existent, God is able to bring to life. Is God able to do that without us eating green beans? Of course! However, through the simple act of eating green beans, "the underdeveloped fruit," we are showing God that we desperately need HIS help to make a better world, and, in simple faith, as we move our eating utensils to our mouths, we are simply asking HIM to move by "developing the good fruit" that we want Him to bring into existence for a better world, and ultimately, for His glory.

Some green bean plants cling to what they wrap themselves around as they grow. We, "The Green Bean World Changers," are clinging to the promise in Zechariah 8:12, where God tells us, “The seed will grow well, the vine will yield its fruit, the ground will produce its crops, and the heavens will drop their dew. I will give all these things as an inheritance to the remnant of this people." (NIV) Oh, how we are clinging to that verse!

We desperately need God to "develop all of this good fruit," but we also need you to join us in The Green Bean Movement for a Better World. As you choose to eat your green beans, ask God what "good fruit" He wants you to pray about for a better world. It may or may not be what we are praying. Whatever He lays on your heart, pray about that! God may have already given you a passion for a particular cause, so go ahead and pray for that! Be a "Green Bean World Changer," and ask God to make a better world through "developing the good fruit" that He has given you a passion for! In addition to you joining us, we also need you to pray for us, as we also pray 2 Thessalonians 1:11 for you - that our God may make us worthy of His calling, and that by His power He may bring to fruition our every desire for goodness and our every deed prompted by faith. (paraphrase from NIV)

"Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess His name." (Hebrews 13:15 NIV) We truly believe that, with God's help, and a little faith, eating green beans can make a better world! Please join us! If you like green beans, ENJOY them, and if you do not, well, think of it as a sacrifice that is pleasing to God! Regardless of how your taste buds "feel" about them, and regardless of your circumstances, grab some green beans - we've got a world to change - in Jesus' name...for HIS glory!

Hi Everyone,

I've been asked to help develop/manage a website/blog that we hope will be a tool to connect people who have a heart to pray for our city. We will inform them of specific prayer needs as they arise; we'll post Scripture and Scripture-based prayers for the leaders of our metro-B'ham area (includes 7 counties, 92 cities); and we'll encourage people to comment with their own prayers. We also hope it will help give the various city-wide prayer ministries a connecting point so that we can work together more efficiently and effectively.

My question is this: Has anyone out there done something like this before for their city? If so, can you share any helpful tips or advice; do(s) and don't(s); etc? We would be most grateful for any input.

Thanks!

"A House of Prayer – or Not?"

Few would argue Jesus’ declared intention that “His house” (today the assembled church and our physical bodies as His living temples) should be a house of prayer (Mark 11:17; 1 Corinthians 3:16, 6:19). However, the romance of this idea often eclipses the reality of it in many churches.

I know pastors who publicly declare that their congregation is a “house of prayer”, which amounts to little more than receiving and distributing prayer requests. Others consider their occasional prayer events as tantamount to being a house of prayer. If we dilute the New Testament model and spiritual essence of the house of prayer Jesus had in mind, we have missed the goal and sadly deceived ourselves into a substandard experience of His presence and power.

The Original Intent

The Old Testament Temple was built as a dwelling place of God’s holy presence and a center of sacred worship, prayer, and sacrifice. In reviewing Solomon’s original dedicatory prayer for the Temple (2 Chronicles 6:12-42), I’ve been impressed with the frequent mentions of prayer. After Solomon’s prayer, the glory of the Lord filled the Temple. The people fell to their faces in awe-inspired worship. The Lord reminded them that this temple would exist as the focal point at which His people would humble themselves and pray, and seek His face – turning from their wicked ways for healing and restoration (2 Chronicles 7:14).

But what does this spiritual reality look like for your church and mine today? What does Jesus desire of us each week if we are to be an authentic house of prayer indeed, not just in word? I think the model of His own disciples in their priorities and approach created a standard every leader and believer should consider. Here are six salient observations from the model of the church from the Book of Acts.

Six Biblical Indicators of a True House of Prayer

1. Prayer was the priority over all self-centered activities – Jesus' anger over the Temple money changers was rooted in the self-serving system created by the religious leaders in order to use the funds from the sales of sacrificial animals for their own gain. He called it a “den of thieves.” A real house of prayer is a place of humility, sacrifice, and spiritual pursuit, not religious enterprise that exists for the reputational, financial, or egotistical advancement of the leaders.

2. Prayer was the birthplace of all vision and ministry –Based on Christ’s instruction, the church was birthed from the womb of a 10-day corporate prayer experience in the Upper Room (Acts 1:12 – 2:1). This became the pattern of the early church. In Acts 13:1-3 we see extraordinary prayer as the launching pad of mission expansion. Today, much of our ministry aspirations and plans are the fruit of planning, discussion, borrowed ideas from books, and the need for a new “BHAG”-- rather than the fruit of hearing from the Spirit in the context of extraordinary prayer.

3. Prayer was a consistent corporate experience at the same level of priority as all other activities – The core spiritual culture of the early church as a house of prayer was best described in Acts 2:42, where the entire congregation was continually committed to the apostles' teaching, fellowship, the breaking of bread, and the prayers. Today, very few churches prioritize a consistent church-wide experience of passionate prayer. Our gyms, fellowship halls, ball fields, and classrooms buzz with constant activities while our prayer meetings are almost non-existent.

4. Prayer was the primary resolve and resource in the face of any challenge – The example of the early church leaders and congregation in Acts 4:23-31 demonstrates their understanding of the meaning of a house of prayer. In the face of threats and persecution they gathered the entire congregation to worship and pray, asking for a greater infilling of the Holy Spirit for a bold advancement of the Gospel. Today, we too easily seek to solve problems via human reason and ecclesiastical muscle.

5. Prayer was modeled first in the leadership culture – I often point to Acts 6:1-7 as a powerful model for a biblical leadership culture. Refusing to personally administer the feeding program for the widows, the early leaders selected other competent leaders for this task so they could maintain the priorities of “prayer and the ministry of the word.” Supernatural blessing and expansion followed (see v. 7). A real house of prayer is guided by leaders who spend extraordinary amounts of time together in prayer because they have a conviction that this is the source of power, unity, direction, and blessing.

6. Prayer was the means of God-glorifying power and provision – Whether it was the church praying for boldness, the saints gathering to intercede for Peter’s release from prison, or Paul and Silas praying at midnight from the belly of the Philippian jail -- we realize that the church viewed prayer as the means of doing the work of Christ in the power of Christ. This is the DNA of a house of prayer. Again, our churches must ask honest questions about our reliance on modern ministry tools and our neglect of passionate, persevering prayer.

7. Prayer was the fuel for Spirit-inspired mission accomplishment – In a true house of prayer, prayer is not the end – but the means to the end. Prayer exists to empower us to accomplish the Great Commission of Christ in the power of Christ and for the glory of Christ. There is no other way to do His work and reach this lost world with the truth of the good news. The apostles prayed to know Him and make Him known through the enablement of the Holy Spirit. Both were core to their understanding of a house of prayer.

My friend, Pastor Jim Cymbala, has often said that the greatest answer to prayer is more prayer. The ideals we’ve just explored help us understand why. May the Lord help us to make His church a true house of prayer, not just by our declaration of the idea but through our resolute demonstration of the ideal of the New Testament.

Lewis Turner has "gently" nudged me to start this Discussion, SO, let's talk about this:

1st) Definition of a "Pulpit Ministry" is simply, people praying WHILE your pastor is preaching,

2nd) Let's begin by talking about experiences either YOU HAVE or that you have read about.

I help churches start prayer ministries and this is a HUGE part of prayer ministries that we start.

So, let's discuss...(thanks Lewis, this does need to get out there).

How do you receive prayer requests from the congregation, written or electronic? We currently give the congregation the opportunity to write prayer requests on their tithe envelope however we will be changing that in the near future and would like to direct them to our website but we're not sure the best way to do that - would LOVE some feedback.

From America's National Prayer Committee - -

It appears to be a season of prayer. God is putting together prayer initiative upon prayer initiative. Not one of these will reach everyone, but between them, many will be encouraged and deepened in their prayer lives. The NPC is sponsoring Prayer Watch 2010 in Kansas City, Aug.26-29. In many ways, this launches a time of prayer leading up to The Call Sacramento, Sept.3-4. This is the tenth anniversary of this powerful call to prayer. We pray The Call will be used to launch 40 days of prayer and fasting leading up to the critical fall elections.

Do you know of an event preparation prayer guide to help people pray for all the steps of planning and preparing for an event or crusade? What to pray for one year out, 11 months out, 10 months, and so on. I've received a request for such a guide; and there's no need to duplicate efforts if a guide exists that will work well. thanks for any insight or suggestions. Elaine
