A Prayer for Every Day of All Seasons, Especially Lent and Passiontide

Richard of Chichester served the Lord as a priest and bishop in England in the 13th Century. He was a contemporary of both Francis of Assisi and Thomas Aquinas.

The Wikipedia article about him says that although he was born into a high social class (the gentry), and could have continued to remain in it, he chose an ascetic life "of study and the Church". As a bishop, he was a clerical reformer, who, the article says:

[. . .] showed much eagerness to reform the manners and morals of his clergy, and also to introduce greater order and reverence into the services of the Church.[5][11]

The Roman Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion regard him as a saint.

Nowadays he is best known as the author of a short prayer which is attributed to him. He is said to have uttered the original version of it on his deathbed. In it, Richard first thanks the Lord Jesus Christ, and then asks Him to have mercy upon him, and commends his spirit to Him. It was recorded in Latin.

The Wikipedia article contains a few versions of it in English. The versions which are best known are so different from the original that the only resemblance they have to it is that they are addressed to the Lord Jesus.

Following is the version which was published in The Churchman's Prayer Manual (1913), compiled by G.R. Bullock-Webster, M.A.:

Thanks be to Thee, my Lord Jesus Christ

For all the benefits Thou hast given me,

For all the pains and insults Thou hast borne for me.

O most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother,

May I know Thee more clearly,

Love Thee more dearly,

Follow Thee more nearly.

The first part of this version is close to the first part of the original one; the second part is unlike anything in the original. Ironically, the petitions of the second part have become famous, and thereby spread Richard's name, while the first part has not.

The phrase "Day by day" has been added to those three petitions to create a song that was published in the hymnal Songs of Praise, Enlarged Edition, from which was derived the song "Day by Day" of the musical play Godspell. In these two songs, "know Thee more clearly" has been changed to "see thee more clearly".

Both the petition to know the Lord more clearly and the petition to see Him more clearly are according to His will. So are the petitions to love Him more dearly and to follow Him more nearly. Therefore, we who petition the Lord with them should confidently believe that He hears us and grants us that for which we ask, as His perspicacious, loving, and faithful follower and friend John teaches:

And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

—I John 5:14–15

With or without the phrase "day by day", all three of these petitions are fitting for prayer every day of every season.

The portion of Richard's prayer in which He gives thanks to the Lord is also so fitting, but it is especially fitting for the liturgical seasons in which special attention is given to the sufferings our Lord endured during His earthly ministry: namely, Lent and Passiontide.

Just as the original version of Richard's prayer was used to make the derivative version presented in this article, so we can use this version to make other derivative prayers.

One way we could do this is by making the petitions more specific in accord with the liturgical season in which we are praying. For example, one could pray the first petition as follows as follows:

Advent

May I know/see Thee in Thy coming more clearly

Christmastide

May I know/see Thee in Thy nativity more clearly

Epiphanytide

May I know/see Thee in Thy manifestations more clearly

Lent

May I know/see Thee in Thy temptations more clearly

Passiontide

May I know/see Thee in Thy suffering and death more clearly

Eastertide

May I know/see Thee in Thy resurrection more clearly

Ascensiontide

May I know/see Thee in Thy ascension more clearly

Pentecost

May I know/see Thee in relation to the Holy Spirit more clearly

Two other changes we might want to make are restoring Richard's two petitions. That is:

1. As Richard pleaded for the Lord to have mercy on him, we plea likewise, as we all need the His mercy every day, whether it be our last one or not.

2. As Richard commended his spirit to the Lord, we commend likewise, as He can care and preserve them better than we can—perfectly, in fact—not only at the point of death in this world, but at all times and in all places. (See Psalm 31:5, Luke 23:46, and Acts 7:59 for other examples of a man commending his spirit in prayer.)

None of this is to say that Richard's version, or any of the other versions attributed to him, are in some way lacking, and cannot or should not be prayed as they are.

Whether or not one observes Lent, Passiontide, or any other liturgical season, I recommend praying the version of Richard's prayer in this article, with confidence in the Lord Jesus that He hears us and grants us its petitions.

May the Lord Himself be greatly blessed, honored, and glorified with all of the versions of the prayer attributed to Richard of Chichester. Amen.

Questions for consideration

1. What do you think about the version of the prayer attributed to Richard of Chichester which is present in this article?

2. Would you like to pray this prayer? If so, why? If not, why not?

3. Would you like to pray this prayer every day of a liturgical season, such as Lent and Passiontide? If so, why? If not, why not?

4. Would you like to make a new version of this prayer that is a derivation of it? If so, why? If not, why not?

5. If you would like to make such a new version, what would you like to say in it?

6. Does I John 5:14–15 affect the way you pray?

Some Ideas for the Observance of Advent

Time flies! As I write this article, we are almost at the end of the traditional Western church year. This means we are almost at the beginning of a new church year: or, in other words, from the first day of the season of Advent. (This year, 2023, the first day of Advent is Sunday, December 3rd.)

If you are interested in observing Advent, I suggest that before it begins you prayerfully consider and decide how you will observe it.

There are multitudes of resources we can use to observe this season, such as a collection of Advent devotions. Many are accessible online. Some are available for free. Some were prepared from the perspective of a particular church tradition, e.g. Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican, Reformed, Methodist, and Baptist, and others were not.

The movement Advent Conspiracy is a source of such resources. I recommend it. Its website says:

Advent Conspiracy was founded on the radical idea that we can celebrate Christmas humbly, beautifully, and generously. Advent is the story of a wondrous moment when God entered our world to make things right. It is the greatest story ever told and it changes everything—including the way we celebrate Christmas.

If you would like to learn more about Advent Conspiracy and the resources it offers, I suggest you use this link: https://adventconspiracy.org/

Of course, one can also observe Advent in worthwhile ways without any of the Advent resources I have mentioned, such as by reading passages of the Scriptures—in both the Old Testament and the New Testament—which are related to Advent, and meditating on them.

Remember that traditionally Advent is not only about the the first coming of the Lord Jesus Christ: that of His Incarnation and Nativity. It is also about His second coming: when "the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works" (Matthew 16:27 (AV/KJV)).

I heartily recommend the daily observance of Advent with one or more suitable spiritual disciplines.

Following is a list of seven such disciplines:

1. Reading passages of the Scriptures which pertain to the advents of the Lord
2. Praying psalms which pertain to the advents of the Lord (such as Psalms 24, 40, 96, and 98)
3. Memorizing one or more verses of the Scriptures which pertain to the advents of the Lord
4. Studying the advents of the Lord
5. Meditating on the advents of the Lord
6. Singing one or more songs (such as hymns) which pertain to the advents of the Lord
7. Thanking and praising the Lord for His advents, including what He did in His first advent and what He will do in His second

I have written about other ideas for the observance of Advent in my article "The Penitential Psalms, Advent, and Lent", which can be on this website here: https://reimaginenetwork.ning.com/forum/topics/the-penitential-psalms-advent-and-lent

And, of course, there is also the aforementioned discipline of using a collection of Advent devotions.

May God the Father bless the observance of Advent to the sanctification, edification, and preparation of His church for His only begotten and beloved Son, through the gracious ministrations of the Holy Spirit, to His glory. Amen.

Questions for consideration
1. Do you think you give enough attention to the advent of the Incarnation and Nativity of Christ? If so, why? If not, why not?
2. Do you think you give enough attention to the advent of the return of Christ? If so, why? If not, why not?
3. Would you like to observe Advent by practicing spiritual disciplines—especially ones which involve the advents of Christ? If so, why? If not, why not?
4. Would you like to learn more about the advents of Christ? If so, why? If not, why not?
5. What are some other spiritual disciples one could perform which involve the advents of Christ?
6. Would you like to thank and praise the Lord Jesus for the advent of His Incarnation and Nativity? If so, why? If not, why not?
7. Would you like to thank and praise the Lord Jesus for the advent of His return? If so, why? If not, why not?

By Chuck Lawless on Mar 03, 2023

Many of us walk through our neighborhoods on regular walks. Almost all of us drive through our communities on a daily basis. What we often fail to do is use these times to pray. If I were praying during either of these opportunities, here are some things I would look for to focus my praying:

Evidence of children in a home. Maybe there are toys in drive or a swing set in the back yard. Perhaps the kids are playing outside. When I see these evidences, I pray for (a) wisdom for parents, and for (b) grace that the parents and the children would know the Lord.

“For Sale” signs in the yard. Here, I pray that the family moving out would experience a gospel witness and find a church home wherever they’re moving. I then pray for the family moving in that (a) if they’re believers, we could join forces to reach the neighborhood, or (b) if they’re not believers, someone—beginning with my wife and me—would be a witness to them.

Places of worship. If it’s a church, I pray that the true gospel would be preached there. If the place of worship represents another non-Christian faith, I pray God would turn its adherents to the true gospel—and that Christians in the community would be loving witnesses to them.

Homes in apparent disarray. Often, those signs indicate some kind of chaos in that home. That could be anything from family conflict to unemployment to health issues to aging homeowners—but prayer is in order. God knows what’s going on behind the closed doors.

Neighbors also walking or driving through the neighborhood. I may or may know the person, but simply seeing him or her deepens and focuses my burden for my neighbors. Somehow, briefly looking with gospel intentionality into the face of someone created in the image of God changes my heart.

Places of education. As a Christian educator, I know how much we need prayer every day. How much more that seems apparent for administrators, teachers, and students in the public school system! I pray particularly that Christians of all ages in that context would be strong witnesses for Christ within that setting.

Sites of government leadership. Paul told us to pray “for kings and all those who are in authority” (2 Tim 2:2)—and seeing the place where leaders serve reminds me to pray for them. Frankly, I need this reminder to pray salvation and wisdom for folks with whom I often disagree politically.

Places of business. I typically pick one place of business as I drive to work each day and pray for its owners. More recently, I’ve begun praying for any business I visit (e.g., a grocery store, a restaurant, a barber, a gas station, etc.). The prayer targets are right there in front of me—I just have to be intentional.

Places of “life and death” service. Here, I’m thinking of places like hospitals, fire stations, police departments, prisons, funeral homes, and cemeteries. Because I believe Christ and the gospel are the key to abundant and eternal life, I pray for those who deal with life and death issues every day.

My own home and workplace. Sometimes we pray for other people and places but fail to pray for ourselves. I’m still developing this habit, but I now pray for our home and for the seminary where I serve every time I park in the driveway or in the parking lot.

I hope these ideas encourage and help you to pray!

Often our examples in church are that of the “pastoral prayer,” where the pastor prays in front of the congregation for 3 or 5 minutes in a monologue. Or in mainline churches, like the Episcopal church, where we have the “Prayers of the People.” Here, one person prays many short paragraphs, interspersed by “Lord, in your mercy…”, to which the people respond, “Hear our prayer.” In both instances, we are together in a room, but I would not say that we are necessarily, praying together.

We divided up into same sex small groups. I remember ours had about a dozen women. I’d say now, that was too many to pray effectively together. We all shared prayer requests, which were dutifully written down, ostensibly, so that we could keep praying on our own during the week. When we finished with the sharing of requests, there was not too much time left to pray. One person started and named each request one by one, so that there was not much left to pray for. I do not doubt the sincerity of the woman’s prayer or that she desired God to be at work in each of these situations, but I also think we can do better at praying together than that.

Simply put, when you build a highway you have to know what is blocking the highway from going through and remove it, and then bring in what needs to be there in order to have the highway. So, when Paul is looking for a job, we just don’t ask God, “Lord, please give him a job.” We think of all the things that are in the way of Paul getting the job that he wants: short-sightedness, despair, a lack of jobs in his field, being stuck. I call this “praying in agreement,” where we make an audible paragraph together, by one person praying 1-2 sentences, the next person taking something that the first person has prayed a little bit deeper, and the next person doing the same and so on and so forth, until there is a bit of a pause, and then a new subject is brought up.

CHAT With The Author ~ Phil Miglioratti @ The Reimagine.Newtwork Interviewed Penny Cooke of "Pursuing Prayer"

PHIL >>> Penny, please explain the difference between typical praying and pursuing prayer?

PENNY >>> Pursuing Prayer is a call to prayer, to fervent prayer, to consider the parts of prayer Jesus taught in the Lord’s Prayer. I’m not talking about reciting the Lord’s Prayer, but recognizing the elements Jesus included that we may overlook when we recite it. Might there be more to the Lord’s Prayer than reciting it? Could our prayers be more effective?

Our lives are busy and seldom quiet, so we need to be intentional about times of prayer that include the elements Jesus taught, as well as taking time in quiet to hear His voice, in addition to the short prayers we may pray throughout our day.

PHIL >>> The format of your book is based on "an acrostic for prayer." How has this acrostic [P-R-A-Y-E-R] helped you in your work as a biblical-life-coach to equip Christians who are pursuing prayer?

PENNY >>> In the book, I coach the reader through the Lord’s Prayer using an acrostic for prayer which coincides with each element of the Lord’s Prayer. The purpose is to help the reader understand Jesus’ prayer better and how they can personalize those elements in their own prayers, beyond reciting it. For example: What does it mean for me to hallow His name? What is His will for my life, and what does it look like for His kingdom to come in my life? Why does forgiveness mean in my life? What evil might I need to be delivered from? As a coach, I encourage the reader to consider what part of the Lord’s Prayer they need to focus on, what action they need to take, and how their prayers can be more effective as a result.

PHIL >>> Talk with us, teach us, about each of these daily prayer directives...

•P - Pursue Prayer Proactively

PENNY >>> Again, Pursuing Prayer is about being intentional, or “proactive” about praying to Our Father. Jesus proactively invites us to a relationship in prayer. Intentionality breeds habit. We schedule everything else in our life, why not prayer? Perhaps if we make time for it first, we won’t eliminate it when life gets too busy. Isn’t that just what the enemy wants? He knows how important prayer is, and he is certainly intentional about distracting us.

•R - Remember God's Righteous Deeds

PENNY >>> This is the “hallowed be Your name” part of the Lord’s Prayer. When we remember what God has done in the past, in the Bible or in our lives or the lives of people we know, it gives us cause to praise Him. So we begin with remembering and worshipping Him. This gets our spiritual perspective right and builds our faith before we go on to the rest of our praying.

•A - Acknowledge Sin and Ask Forgiveness

PENNY >>> This is the “forgive us our debts” piece of the Lord’s Prayer. This helps us keep short accounts, which gives us the peace and confidence to come to him. Otherwise, we can be like Adam and Eve hiding from God. If His mercies are new every morning, why not come to Him every morning for those mercies, for a clean slate and a fresh start.

•Y - Yield to God's Will

PENNY >>> “Thy will be done.” In the R, we focused on who God is. Considering He is all He says He is, all knowing and all powerful, and we are limited, why would we want to run our lives without seeking Him first? We can’t see into the next minute, why wouldn’t we want to follow His plan and will for the moments only He sees? But that takes being proactive about prayer.

•E - Enjoy God's Daily Bread

PENNY >>> “Give us this day our daily bread” is about trusting Him to meet our needs, relying on Him for everything. This is the part of prayer we pray the most, praying for needs such as a health or financial situation. We bring Him our “prayer list” because He said to bring Him our burdens and to pray about everything. But, I encourage the reader to go beyond that. Might there be more to our daily bread than our tangible needs? (Hint: He is the Bread of Life.)

•R - Rest in God

PENNY >>> Part of prayer is being still to hear His voice. Jesus was intentional about going off by Himself to spend time with the Father. I believe that when we pray as Jesus modeled and taught, including all of the above, our soul will have rest—no anxiety about anything and a peace that surpasses understanding. That’s trust. That’s faith. That’s rest.

"True repentance means we make whatever adjustments need to be made and it produces an earnest desire to do better."

"Real repentance is a radical change of heart that leads to...taking responsibility (for) our own decisions and actions."

PHIL >>> How essential is true repentance in the heart of the believer if that believer is to reimagine how the Spirit wants to transform them by the renewing of their mind (Romans 12:2)?

PENNY >>> Let’s turn your question around: True repentance is essential if the believer’s mind is to be transformed. Repentance opens the door to renewing our mind. So we must understand what true repentance is and what it means to the effectiveness of our prayers. David said in Psalm 66:18, “If I cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.” Might something hinder our prayers? Might there be something hindering the renewing of our mind?

Once we have repented, cleaned the slate so to speak, then we must put something else on that slate, and that is the Word of God. We must be as intentional about God’s Word as we are about prayer.

"Hallowed be Thy names."

"Remember to raise God's names in praise."

PHIL >>> What do God's names in scripture reveal to us and how should we incorporate them in our praying?

PENNY >>> The beginning of knowing someone is knowing their name. In the Bible, names had deep meaning and significance. When we realize who God is through His many names (one name could never adequately describe Him) we will have more faith when we come to Him, and we will worship more deeply. He wants us to know Him. And there’s so much to know about His love, His care, His mercy. How can we truly worship Him (hallow His name) if we don’t really know Him?

One of the names God is called repeatedly in the Bible is God of Hosts, or God of Heaven’s Armies. We don’t always see prayer as the spiritual warfare that it is. We can’t see the spiritual battles going on, how the enemy’s armies advance when we do not call out to the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. Perhaps if we considered this name of God and what it means, we would put on our armor and wield our “Sword of the Sprit” with more fervency. Perhaps prayer would become so vital to us that we would not cease to pray for our families, our nation, and our world. For we do not battle against humans but spiritual enemies. When we are, not just a member of, but in active military duty in Heaven’s army, praying fervently in spiritual warfare, perhaps then we will change our world.

PHIL >>> How would you coach a Pastor or Prayer Leader to reimagine/reshape the culture of prayer in their congregation?

PENNY >>> Many people struggle with prayer. It should be a joy, but instead they feel lacking. People are always wondering how to pray. It doesn’t have to be confusing or deeply theological—that’s when we lose the average person. So, I would say, teach the elements of the Lord’s Prayer as how to pray: worship, confession, seeking His will, praying against temptation to be delivered from evil, and being still to hear His voice. And when in a spiritual battle, teach them to pray scripture, the Sword of the Spirit. That’s what Jesus used to be delivered from the evil one’s attacks. I believe if we prayed this way, we would have more confidence and motivation to pray, resulting in more peace and less anxiety and fear…and a more effective prayer life.

I say this from experience. I prayed for 13 years for my son to be delivered from drugs. I used many scriptures to pray for him, wielding my spiritual sword to fight for him. Praise God he was not only delivered, but God did “exceedingly abundantly above all I asked or imagined.” He is a pastor now.

"Pursuing Prayer is your invitation to chase the kingdom of God here on earth."

PHIL >>> Unpack the idea of chasing the kingdom of God and how that insight gives us a deeper-and-wider perspective of the purpose and patterns of praying.

PENNY >>> We chase what we love. We chase what we desire. Chasing is pursuing. Chasing is being proactive. What does our level of chasing the Kingdom say about our desire for the things of the Kingdom? Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul and mind. Our society, and even sometimes the church, has gotten so far away from this that we think being so Kingdom minded is radical, a Jesus freak. But that’s what we were supposed to be. Has our praying become watered down? Are our churches houses of prayer? We can think fervent praying is for the pastor and maybe a few “prayer warriors.” But it’s for all of us. Fervent prayers = fervent answers.

PHIL >>> One more thing you'd like to say ...

PENNY >>> Have I always seen my prayers answered? Of course not. I doubt any of us have had 100% of our prayers answered the way we prayed them. But I’ve seen God move through prayer. I’ve especially seen God move in my own heart through prayer. I think the greater miracle is what He does “in” us, not around us. And if that is all I ever experienced because of prayer, it would be enough.

This is what prayer is really about—relationship. It’s that sweet fellowship with the Holy Spirit we are privileged to have…the peace, strength, comfort. Oh, don’t miss out! If you’d like a more effective prayer life and a deeper relationship with Our Father, I invite you to Pursuing Prayer – Being Effective in a Busy World.

PHIL >>> Penny, please write a prayer we can pray with you in our desire to pursue an effective prayer life in a much-too-busy world.

PENNY >>> Father, help us to be convinced that the busier we are, the more we need prayer, not less. Help us to know You and Your Word so well that we can rightly hallow Your name. Remind us to keep short accounts with You and to confess often, to draw upon Your lovingkindness and mercies that are there for us each new day. Help us to make Your will a priority as we bring You our requests. We need Your Kingdom on earth and in our lives, Lord. We need Your help and power to overcome the temptations in this world. We need You to deliver us from the evil one and his attacks in our lives. Our families need our prayers; our nation needs our prayers; our world needs our prayers. We need Your power that is released when confessed believers pray fervent prayers of faith to the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. Thank you for your love and that you offer this kind of relationship with You. Thank You for the privilege of prayer! In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

Repentance is essential to life with God. It was essential to the ministries of the prophets, up to and including John the Baptist and the Lord Jesus Christ. During His earthly ministry, the Lord both preached it and taught it. Two examples:

Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,

And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

—Mark 1:14–15 (AV/KJV)

I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

—Luke 13:3 and 5 (for context, read verses 1 through 9) (AV/KJV)

Repentance is also a theme of two seasons of the liturgical year: Advent and Lent. Both seasons are traditionally times in which Christians examine themselves and repent of their sins. Thus they are seasons of penitence.

What is penitence? Oxford Languages defines it as follows: "the action of feeling or showing sorrow and regret for having done wrong; repentance".

Seven of the psalms are known as the "Penitential Psalms", namely: 6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130, and 143 (according to the numbering of the Septuagint: 6, 31, 37, 50, 101, 129, and 142).

The Wikipedia article "Penitential Psalms" says:

These psalms are expressive of sorrow for sin. Four were known as 'penitential psalms' by St. Augustine of Hippo in the early 5th century. The fiftieth Psalm (Miserere) was recited at the close of daily morning service in the primitive Church.

Thus, the following spiritual disciplines are suitable for observing Advent and Lent:

1. Reading the Penitential Psalms

2. Reciting the Penitential Psalms

3. Praying the Penitential Psalms

4. Singing the Penitential Psalms (they have been set to music many times)

5. Studying the Penitential Psalms

6. Memorizing the Penitential Psalms

7. Meditating on the Penitential Psalms

Since there are seven of them, and there are seven days in a week, it would be fitting to read, recite, pray, etc. through these psalms once a week during Advent and Lent, each day with a different psalm. For example, reading Psalm 6 on Sunday, Psalm 31 on Monday, Psalm 37 on Tuesday, and so forth.

It would also be fitting to spend each week of these seasons meditating on a different psalm, e.g. meditating on Psalm 6 the first week, Psalm 31 the second week, Psalm 37 the third week, and so forth.

As one would expect, through the ages much has been written about the Penitential Psalms, e.g. studies, commentaries, and meditations. Many of these can be read in books which are currently in print. (For example, Savonarola's meditation on Psalm 51, which has been read by devout Christians since it was first published over five centuries ago, is currently available in a contemporary English translation in the book Prison Meditations on Psalms 51 and 31, published by Marquette University Press. One can learn more about it here: https://www.marquette.edu/mupress/Savonarola.shtml)

One can also learn about the Penitential Psalms from articles which are accessible online.

In conclusion: Whether or not one observes Advent and Lent, I recommend one pray for divine assistance with self-examination—always bearing in mind not only that the Lord's calls us to repent, but to believe the gospel of the kingdom of God.

Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.

—Psalm 19:12 (AV/KJV)

Questions for consideration

1. Do you agree that repentance is essential to life with God? If so, why? If not, why not?

2. Would you like to observe Advent and/or Lent by practicing spiritual disciplines? If so, why? If not, why not?

3. Would you like to observe Advent and/or Lent by practicing spiritual disciplines with the Penitential Psalms? If so, why? If not, why not?

4. Would you like to learn more about the Penitential Psalms? If so, why? If not, why not?

5. What are some other spiritual disciples one could perform with the Penitential Psalms?

6. Would you like to pray for divine assistance with self-examination? If so, why? If not, why not?

7. Would you like to pray Psalm 19:12?
Phil Miglioratti interviewed Remco Brommet, author of "Prayer Matters" for The Reimagine.Networl

PHIL >>> Remco, what did God use to prompt you to write this book?

REMCO >>> During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic and the violence erupting in our country I encounter a lot of anxiety among people in our ministry community along with a lack of knowledge of how to pray. I began writing a series of weekly prayer pointers. During that time I could not shake the thought that God's people, especially here in the USA, urgently need to root themselves deeply into a daily relationship with Him as times get harder, and move from occasional crisis or need-driven prayer to a life of unceasing prayer in order to have the strength of faith, the depth of peace, and the brightness of light in order to thrive amidst growing global chaos.

PHIL >>> You have an uncommon profile: Born in the Netherland, pastored in Amsterdam, 40+ years of ministry in Europe, Southeast Asia, Africa and the United States. How have these experiences and cultures fed into your worldview, especially your perspective on prayer?

REMCO >>> It has given me a keen sense that we are part of a Global Church that is very diverse and yet also very much united in Christ by the Holy Spirit. It has also given me a diverse prayer experience. Both in the Netherlands and in places like Southeast Asia and Africa, I saw something we often do not think about very often, namely that we are engaged in a fierce spiritual battle. Satan has been effective in helping us forget that issue in many of our US churches. Growing up and ministering in The Netherlands has also helped me understand what being a Christian looks like in a post-Christian society, something we are not familiar with here in the US either. It helps me understand the trends and see the handwriting on the wall that we are rapidly moving towards that. That in turn is what drives me to call as loudly and as often as I can upon Christians that a healthy prayer life, at home, and in church, is a matter of (spiritual) life and death.

PHIL >>> You view The Lord's Prayer as "more a template for prayer than an actual prayer to be repeated." How did you come to that conclusion and what are the surprising benefits that come from that revelation?

REMCO >>> I was taught that it was more of a pattern for prayer than a rote prayer early on in my spiritual walk. As I started writing about the crucial importance of a life of prayer it dawned on me that Jesus" teaching on prayer, being the Son of God and speaking straight from the Father's heart, forms the basis. The surprising benefit is that it frees prayer from a liturgical repetition and el evates it into a multi-faceted love relationship with the Father. And the more I think and write about it, the more I see that just about every prayer I pray falls under one of the facets of the Lord's prayer. It also forms the keys to "surrendered prayer," prayer that acquiesces in the good and perfect will of God and seeks answers on His terms and according to His will rather than our own.

PHIL >>> Speak to us from the roles that have defined your life of ministry:

What insights, lessons, have you learned about the matters of praying from serving as a spiritual growth teacher? (focus:personal/individual)

REMCO >>>Prayer is the primary practice that keeps us connected to Christ as a branch is to the Vine. What is of particular importance is that we learn to listen to the Lord as part of our prayer life. When we do that first and ask Him to speak to us, we study our Bibles with different eyes, and we put our requests before God with insight from the Holy Spirit. It places us on the receiving end of the constant impartation of His truth, which sets us free from worry, anxiety, confusion, fear, and hopelessness. That is especially important as our world seems to spin towards destruction ever faster.

Speak to pastors who need to ignite their own prayer life as they want to equip their congregation to "discover the joys of God's design for a life of prayer." (focus: the fellowship of prayer)

REMCO >>> A turning point in my prayer life came when God took all ministry away from me and for 18 months had me in a place of just coming to Him and letting Him speak into my life through prayerful interaction with the Word and quiet but clear promptings of the Holy Spirit. I realized I had fallen into the trap I had often warned pastors about and let my relationship with God be a business relationship, with the focus of my prayers and the nature of my Bible study on ministry and not my inner life, or even my everyday life. By turning that around, I learned to be first and foremost a son and relate to God as Father, and let ministry flow out of daily relationship and communion with Him. My advice is to take time out of ministry to reconnect with Him personally around the simple question: What do you want to say to me today? Then let Him bring you back to sonship. Surrender the tyranny of the urgent to Him and make a daily time of personal prayer and meditation a priority. I also recommend using two Bibles: one for personal meditation and a separate one for sermon prep.

Having served in various roles as a prayer leader, what can you share with us about prayer for-and-in-and-with the community? (neighbors/nations)

REMCO >>> God has ordained to work mightily through the prayers of His people. We are not only a chosen race, a holy nation, and a people of His own possession (1 Peter 2:9) but also a royal priesthood. Every Christian is drafted into the Great Commission and the great spiritual battle that surrounds it, and every Christian has been given the mantle of priesthood whereby we carry the needs of the world around us before the Father. By God's choice, doors open for the gospel - in our backyard and to the ends of the earth. By God's choice, Satan is defeated in places where he opposes the gospel through our prayers. By God's choice, blessing is poured down upon our fellow believers, and upon the people we rub shoulders with. By our choice, we either participate in the great and mighty things God brings about through prayer, or we stay behind in the dust of our daily cumber and miss the incredible joy of joining Him in the advance of His Kingdom.

While searching in Google Books for a certain remark of the ancient Church Father Gregory of Nyssa, I came across the following words of Hans Boersma on page 77 of his book Seeing God: The Beatific Vision in Christian Tradition (William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 2018):

I will argue that, for Saint Gregory, human souls find their telos when in union with Christ they become ever purer, in an ever-increasing growth in the beatific vision. Gregory was a theologian always in search of Christ, and though he was convinced that he had indeed found him, his desire to see Christ impelled him still further. For Gregory this theological longing was grounded in his understanding of the beatific vision: the eschatological future of perpetual progress (epektasis) within the life of Christ means that already in this life Gregory set his desire on seeking the face of God in Jesus Christ.

Some readers may find re-reading this excerpt with the following definitions to be helpful:

telos: "an ultimate object or aim" (Oxford Languages)

beatific vision: "the direct experience of God by those in heaven" (Oxford Reference)

eschatological: "relating to death, judgment, and the final destiny of the soul and of humankind" (Oxford Languages)

Attend especially to this sentence:

Gregory was a theologian always in search of Christ, and though he was convinced that he had indeed found him, his desire to see Christ impelled him still further.

Of course, the sense in which Gregory sought to "find" and "see" Christ in this world was not physically, but mentally and spiritually. Through knowledge and understanding, he sought to have a greater and greater perception of the Son of God. (During His earthly ministry, thousands of people saw the Lord physically, but relatively few saw Him spiritually: that is to say, relatively few who saw that He is the son of a woman also saw that He is the Son of God (Matthew 11:25–27 and 16:13–20; John 9:39–41 and 12:37–41; I Corinthians 2:6–16).)

Note that Gregory believed that all Christians—those who have found Christ and are in union with Him—should do the same: not just theologians, such as himself.

Gregory knew that purity is related to the ability to see God because the Lord Jesus taught that in the Sermon on the Mount: "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God" (Matthew 5:8).
AMY>>> The second step of prayerful reading is reflecting. It’s like an animal chewing the cud - we turn over a word or phrase that we feel God has highlighted to us from the Scripture text. We let God’s word interact with our thoughts, hopes, and dreams.

Responding

AMY>>> After reading and reflecting, we read the text again and this time we respond - we give to God any prayers of petition, intercession, thanksgiving, praise or lament. We trust that God welcomes our prayers of response.

Resting

AMY>> The fourth step might be the hardest for modern people! We rest as we read the text prayerfully for a fourth time. We don’t have to do anything, but just enjoy God’s presence.

3. How is encountering God facilitated in a group setting? What are the differences? Benefits to our personal praying? Potential detours?

AMY>>> God delights to meet us whether on our own or in a group setting. When we meet with God in a group setting, we might feel a bit hindered from, say, letting out all of our emotions. And we might want more silence or less silence than we’re given. But the potential benefits of praying with others definitely outweigh the challenges. There’s something special about the way God reveals himself when we’re praying with others. We might experience breakthroughs that we wouldn’t have encountered on our own. And we can reach a new level of intimacy with those in our group too.

AMY>>> Hearing God in prayer makes it a delightful adventure! Of course we need to learn discernment - I didn’t get it right when I thought God was telling me to marry a certain man - but when we open ourselves up to listen to God we find him leading us in exciting and transformative ways. A great place to start if this practice is new to you is praying with the Bible, asking God to speak to you through his words revealed there.

Lamenting

AMY>>> God doesn’t want us to bury our pain; rather he welcomes us to express it to him in prayers of lament. That might sound old-fashioned, but it’s simply crying out to God, releasing to him our sadness and disappointment. Nearly half of the Psalms are prayers of lament, so we have wonderful examples of how to do so. Check out Psalm 22, for example, with its four-step lament. David starts off with addressing God, then he voices his complaint, then he asks God for help, then he comes to an expression of trust in God.

AMY>>> Placing ourselves into a gospel story with our imaginations can be a transformative experience! The first time I tried out this practice, I was surprised at what came up (something rather embarrassing, which I share in the chapter on gospel imaginative prayer). As we enter the story, God seems to delight in engaging our whole selves, meeting us in ways beyond just a rational engagement.

Psalm 80 begins with this plea:

Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like a flock; thou that dwellest between the cherubims, shine forth.

In the book The Treasury of David, by Charles H. Spurgeon, the following prayer attributed to the Dominican friar Girolamo Savonarola (1452–1498) is quoted in connection with this verse:

Thou that leadest Joseph like a flock art considered by the unbelieving to have no thought for our affairs; therefore stretch forth thine hand for our assistance, that the mouth of them that speak iniquities may be shut. We seek not gold and riches, or the dignities of this world, but we long for thy light, we desire more ardently to know thee, therefore, "shine forth."

I understand the reference to "Joseph" in the psalm to be a metonym and synecdoche for the Israelites, as the patriarch Joseph was the father of two of the largest tribes of ancient Israel: Ephraim and Manasseh, I believe that when Savonarola referred to "Joseph", he did so in a spiritual sense, following the lead of the apostle Paul, who n Romans 4 and Galatians 3 and 4 explains that a Gentile who shares the faith of the patriarch Abraham is, in a spiritual sense, a child of Abraham. Thus, by "Joseph", the friar is referring to all those who are Israelites in a spiritual sense, as distinct from a fleshly sense: or, as the apostle might say, "according to the flesh" or "after the flesh" (Romans 1:3 and 9:3, I Corinthians 10:18, Galatians 3:23 and 29).

The "Shepherd of Israel", the one who "leadest Joseph like a flock", is, of course, the LORD: the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. This is not the only verse of the Old Testament which refers to Him as a shepherd: others include Psalm 23:1, Psalm 100:3 (by implication), and Ezekiel 34:11-19. In the New Testament we read that the Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, is the "Good Shepherd" (John 10:1-18) and the "chief Shepherd" (I Peter 5:4) of His people.

The expression "shine forth" is related to Deuteronomy 33:2, which says:

And he said, The LORD came from Sinai, and rose up from Seir unto them; he shined forth from mount Paran, and he came with ten thousands of saints: from his right hand went a fiery law for them.

Thus the psalmist, and by extension Savonarola, are asking for God to "shine forth" as He did during the Exodus, when He gave the Israelites the Law through Moses. The same Hebrew word translated as "shine forth" is used in the following verses:

Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined.

--Psalm 50:2

O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongeth; O God, to whom vengeance belongeth, shew thyself [shine forth].

--Psalm 94:1

.

Reading further in Psalm 80, one sees that the psalmist asks God to "shine forth" because Israel was suffering, because she had strife with her neighbors, and because her enemies were laughing at her (verses 5 and 6, and more).

It sounds as if when Savonarola wrote his prayer, there were people around him who did not believe that God cared about the affairs of His people, and expressed their unbelief in an iniquitous manner, e,g, by scorn, mockery, and blasphemy. He asks God for His assistance not only because His people need it, but to shut the mouths of the unbelievers.

He also tells God that His people "long for" His light, and "more ardently desire" to know Him. He contrasts their longing and desire with their not seeking for "gold and riches" and "the dignities of this world". To fulfill their longing and desire, he asks God to "shine forth".

It should be noted that Savonarola is best known not for his prayers or his commentary on the Scriptures, but for his preaching of repentance to the populace of Florence during the Italian Renaissance, which had an extraordinary effect.

Therefore, we should understand that his prayer came from an attitude of contrition and repentance. It would have been foolish and presumptuous of him if it did not.

Questions for consideration:

1. Do you consider God to be the Shepherd of His people? Why or why not?

2. Can you relate to the situation of God's people which is implied by Savonarola in his prayer: one in which they were seen by others who did not believe that God cares about their affairs? Why or why not?

3. Would you like God to stretch forth His hand for the assistance of His flock to show those who do not believe that He cares about their affairs that in fact He does? Why or why not?

4. What is your attitude toward "gold and riches"? Do you seek them? Why or why not?

In the book The Treasury of David, by Charles H. Spurgeon, the following prayer attributed to the Dominican friar Girolamo Savonarola (1452–1498) is quoted in connection with this verse:

Still it has roots, still some branches are living. In the beginning of the world it began, and never has failed, and never will. For thou hast said, Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. It may be diminished, it can never utterly fall. This vine is the vine which thou hast planted. There is one spirit, one faith, one baptism, one God, and Lord of all, who is all in all. Visit, then, this vine, for thy visitation preserves her spirit; visit by thy grace, by thy presence, by thy Holy Spirit. Visit with thy rod, and with thy staff; for thy rod and thy staff comfort her. Visit with thy scourge that she may be chastened and purified, for the time of pruning comes. Cast out the stones, gather up the dry branches, and bind them in bundles for burning. Raise her up, cut off the superfluous shoots, make fast her supports, enrich the soil, build up the fence, and visit this vine, as now thou visitest the earth and watereth it.

Much of this prayer is based on John 15:1-8, wherein the Lord Jesus speaks of Himself as the True Vine, His disciples as the branches, and His heavenly Father as the vinedresser. Savonarola believed that all the people of God of all ages--including those who lived prior to the Incarnation, e.g. the Patriarchs--are branches in the Vine who is Christ.

It is also based on other passages of the Scriptures, including, it seems to me, at least the following: Matthew 28:20, Psalm 80:8, Ephesians 1:23 and 4:4-5, Psalm 23:4, Hebrews 12:5-11, Titus 2:14, Isaiah 5:1-2, Matthew 13:30, and Psalm 65:9.

Savonarola agreed with the author of Hebrews that it is good for God to chasten His people, and thus he prayed for Him to do it. Hebrews 12:10-11 says that God chastens them in fatherly love so that they may yield "the peaceable fruit of righteousness" and partake of His holiness.

Savonarola also agreed with the Lord Jesus that it is good for God the Father to take away the branches of the Vine which produce no fruit, and to prune those branches which do produce fruit. Both measures are conducive to fruitfulness, and the Father is glorified when the branches bear much fruit (John 15:2 and 8). He prunes with love, and He has the knowledge and wisdom to prune as is best.

Questions for consideration:

1. Do you consider God's chastening (discipline) to be good?

2. If so, do you desire He chasten the church? Yourself?

3. What do you think about asking God, in fatherly love and in His knowledge and wisdom, to chasten and purify the church, for her good and His glory?

4. Do you consider God's pruning of the branches so that they would bear much fruit to be good?

Prayers and Conversations that Ignite Movements

written by Jerry Wiles September 6, 2021

The Power of Praying the Word of God, and Claiming His Promises

Houston, TX (ANS) – In 1806, Samuel J. Mills, Jr., a student at Williams College was one of five participants in what became known as the famous “haystack prayer meeting.” It was a catalyst for a good number of significant mission movements. Mills also led in the formation of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, the American Bible Society, the United Foreign Missionary Society, and several other organizations. He is a great example of how one or a few can impact so many.

Consider what it takes to ignite a movement, build a business, or grow a church or organization? What are the principles, methods or strategies that enable each of us, as followers of Jesus, to make the greatest possible contribution to advancing the Kingdom of God? These are important questions to ponder, and I suggest there are some very simple and understandable answers.

The Power of Prayer

Another example in Church history is Daniel Nash (1775-1831) who served as Charles Finney’s personnel intercessor. He was key to the revival that followed Finney’s ministry. We can all look at the life of Daniel Nash and see an example of how important prayer is in advancing the kingdom of God. When God would direct where a meeting was to be held, Nash would quietly go into the town and seek to get two or three people to join in a covenant of prayer with him. They would pray fervently for God to move in the community.

A Small Mustard Seed can Produce a Large Plant

The lives and influence of those like Mills and Nash should inspire each of us, as followers of Jesus, that we too can be used to ignite and foster movements of God. Scripture affirmed that we have access to the throne of grace and are invited to come to Him in times of need.

Little Things can have Big Impact

A Small amount of Yeast can Affect a Large Lump of Dough

The parables of Jesus about mustard seed and yeast are a couple of examples of Kingdom principles that help us understand how we can be salt and light in society, even be catalysts to start or promote movements that change the world. From these parables, we learn that little things can have major impact. Biblical examples would be the Samaritan Woman at the Well, the demon possessed Gerasene, and Phillip’s encounter with the Ethiopian eunuch. These show how God can use one person to impact a community, a region or even an entire nation.

In the natural realm, think of the fact that every major river starts with a small stream. A small snowball can cause an avalanche. A seed is the beginning of a tree that produces much fruit. Consider how many major corporations started out in someone’s kitchen or garage. Megachurches, as well as major church planting/disciple making movements, have started in living rooms, coffee shops, storefronts and under trees.

Passion for Sharing the Gospel

A Little Spark can Ignite a Great Fire

During the “Jesus Movement” of the 1970s, there was a popular song titled, “It Only takes a Spark to get a Fire Going.” Many students and young people were ignited with great passion during those days for sharing the Gospel on college and university campuses around the country. In my own journey, I have experienced how influencing one person, or leading someone to Christ, can result in hundreds of others coming to the Lord.

A couple of years ago I reconnected with a friend I had some ministry with more than 30 years ago. We were in Washington, D.C. after a White House briefing waiting for a taxi on a nearby sidewalk. It was raining and a kind lady standing close by offered to share her umbrella with us. While we waited together for the taxi, I engaged her in conversation, asked a few questions and shared the gospel with her. She was interested and open and we had prayer together, and she confessed her faith in Jesus. The whole encounter took less than ten minutes.

Multiplying Impact

The Most Effective Ways that People have Learned and Communicated from the Beginning of Time

Not realizing it at the time, but that experience had a significant impact on my friend Brian and inspired him to be more proactive in reaching out to share Christ with others. He recently told me that he has consistently shared the gospel with others since then, and on average, seen two or three people a week come to the Lord. Brian is an example of how the Lord honors our sowing the Seed of the Word of God into the lives of others. When we do so, we can expect that occasionally it will take root in good soil.

In the 1970s and ‘80s a few mission and church leaders became interested in and began discussions about Orality, Oral Cultures and Oral Learners. Those discussions were about what it will take to complete the Great Commission and how to reach the unreached and Bible-less people groups of the world. It was from those conversations that resulted in creating the Oral Bible Task Force during Amsterdam 2000. Then four years later it became known as the International Orality Network, in collaboration with the Lausanne Movement.

The 2021 ION North America Regional Connection, October 15-16, will be a unique opportunity to learn more about this movement.

Learn more here: International Orality Network | 2021 ION North America Regional Conference

Increasing numbers of mission and ministry leaders, pastors and church leaders, business professionals and ordinary followers of Jesus are now paying attention to the Orality Movement. There are a number of global mission leaders who are saying that it could revolutionize the way the Christian world thinks about communicating the gospel and making disciples, that would be cross-cultural, transferable and reproducible.

Consider — from seed to fruit, from stream to river, from snowball to avalanche. The Orality Movement is an example of those Kingdom principles being worked out in our time. If the past 40 years is an indicator of all the Lord has in mind for the next 40 years, we can all be a part of this historic move of God in advancing His Kingdom here on earth and the realization of the prophecy of Habakkuk 2:14, “For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.” Scripture tells us that God is no respecter of persons. We often say, “He is an equal opportunity employer.” We can all get in on what He is doing in redeeming His creation. We can fully expect that God will honor the seed of His Word as we sow it into the lives of others.

#ItSeemsToMe... it is way too easy for Christians to unintentionally offer prayers that are actually more Republican than righteous; sound more like a Democrat than a disciple. When our political preferences infect our intercessory petitions, we have shifted from empowering the Spirit to employing the Spirit. No one of us is immune from this politicized syncretism.

Our best solution is to leave our political wish-list aside when we pray.

Begin with praise (declaring the goodness of God). Give thanks (declare the grace of God.

A - ASK...for a fresh filling as you surrender to the Spirit ...Ask a question

S - SEEK...a scriptural focus in silence, stillness

K - KNOCK...when you receive Spirit-led, scripture-fed direction, move forward boldly in faith

When you pray for your candidate, also pray for the other.

When you pray about those you consider an enemy of your positions, ask for God's mercy to bring (repentance (a change of mind).

When you have completed your prayer/praying, ask the Spirit to help you review and, as needed, revise.

#ItSeemsToMe...my politicized prayers may be canceling your other-party-platform prayers. God is neither Democrat nor Republican. If you do not believe that, then may I ask that you work and vote for your party but stop bothering God.

HIDDEN BY GOD

Since late 2016 I’ve been developing a lifestyle of deeper intimacy with God. I don’t say “spiritual disciplines” because it sounds dry and academic. I call it a new lifestyle. Pray, worship, Bible, other books…but so different than ever before. It’s not about something I ought to do, and it’s not another legal rule I have to follow. It’s simply every possible way to be in an all day and night companionship with His 3-fold majesty and His promise to be my constant light (guidance) and shield (protection).

Morning, evening, bedtime can be a bit more formal, following the “Rhythm of Daily Prayer” established by Ffald y Brenin Retreat Center/Wales. Yet even while reading the written prayers or appointed Psalm or Gospel verses, nothing is rote because it’s simply a skeleton which the Spirit regularly interrupts to make my prayer or reading more personal. For example, the Lord’s Prayer is included, but I don’t believe I can ever pray it all the way through! I get stuck and have to fill out one of the simple phrases with a flood of things I need to personalize before Him. So it’s the Lord’s Prayer and my prayers all mixed together.

Scripture enters in at various times of the day. An appointed Psalm and New Testament chapter. A New or Old Testament book I’m studying at a deeper level. A daily Facebook paraphrased, personalized Word accompanied by beautiful nature scenes and music. Constant slow, deep reflection and response to the love message between Jesus and me contained in Song of Solomon.

I take a three mile walk each day, and carry a homemade songbook with me that includes my favorite old hymns, gospel songs, and contemporary worship in both English and Creole, plus secular songs that I’ve re-written with “holy” words. I walk and sing and pray. Sometimes I walk and cry because I’m either so desperate or so happy, and people who walk or bike past me have quite a sight!

I’ve read about 25 books since I’ve been here in the US, and I’ve got about 15 more I hope to finish before I return to Haiti. I have a sense these books were hand-picked by the Lord. I’m actually reading very slowly, sometimes one chapter over and over because it’s as though the Lord Himself is speaking to me, burying truth deep inside me which He will bring up in future teaching, preaching, or mentoring according to His plan and purpose. I was an English literature major in college, always a reader, but my experience in reading now is profoundly different. It’s like everything is happening in slow motion as I savor each morsel that He Himself is planting within me.

In one sense I could call this entire time I’ve been away from Haiti a “Sabbatical of Spiritual Re-Formation” with “Papa God”, “Jesus Companion”, and “Spirit RiverFire” constantly above, beneath, and surrounding me. That’s my description of how it feels to me.

Now let me make an important correction. This has certainly been a holy holiday, but I don’t mean to imply that I’m intimately connected with God 24/7 and in constant touch with His will, voice, and direction. I can at times be completely confused and uncertain about decisions I need or want to make. Sometimes I know what He’s saying to me and sometimes I don’t have a clue. Yet the great wonder is that even when I’m confused, I seldom feel alone, and I never feel forsaken or abandoned. Depression, fear, and worry all attack me, but they don’t have a chance to last too long.

I’ve always preached and taught, that the most important foundation to spiritual revival is confession and repentance of sins. Yet it is only in this recent time that I can say I now live in daily repentance. My day cannot end until, at my bedside, I confess “before the whole company of Heaven that I have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, and in what I have failed to do.” And then I pause and remember…things thought, said or done with motives of pride or judgment or fleshly desires. Now every day I embrace Jesus on the cross (I visualize as I pray) and ask that the blood dripping down His body would be pressed into me, that I might be washed clean and humbled again to take up my cross and follow Him for another day and night.

I also have had fellowship with the Body of Christ through both the congregation my brother is part of and another one in the area that I often attend myself. I’ve been part of singing on a worship team, joining a choir for a Good Friday cantata, being part of a Home Bible Study, Sunday School class, Men’s Breakfast, and some special one-on-one sharing with the senior pastor of the local “mega” church.

This is my personal revival. Now may you also be blessed in Jesus’ Name, as you seek a closer intimacy and all-day sense of His nearness and love.

James Glynn, Pastor/President, HaitiRevival
