ASK • ADAPT • APPLY

Transferable ministry strategies and practices from the field

A SpotLIGHT is more than an introduction to a ministry organization.

It is an invitation to explore how another ministry thinks and operates—not simply to adopt what they do, but to:

ASK — What?
What is this ministry doing that aligns with—or challenges—our thinking and practice? What problem, opportunity, principle, or practice should we explore?

ADAPT — So What?
What could this mean in our context? What is transferable? What needs to be changed, translated, or rethought?

APPLY — Now What?
What will we try, practice, revise, or implement? What do we need to change in order to implement something new? What coaching or conferring should we pursue?

What? → So What? → Now What?

How Will You Explore?

SELF-STUDY?
Follow the links and trail markers. Notice what confirms, challenges, or changes your thinking. Then come back and make notes:

  • What? → What did I notice?
  • So What? → Why does it matter?
  • Now What? → What should I explore or do next?

GROUP DISCUSSION?
Establish a facilitator. Explore the assigned material individually before discussing it. Then share around the circle.

  • First: What did you notice?
  • Then: What might it mean?
  • Finally: What might we need to do?

Listen before debating. Explore before deciding.

Begin With Prayer Assist

Prayer Assist introduces its ministry in its own words:

From Prayer Assist: “Prayer Assist consults with and equips pastors, leaders and faith-based organizations to produce more prayer-energized disciples and ministries.”

Prayer Assist — About / How We Can Help

From the Prayer Assist homepage: “God’s people cannot become fully developed disciples without a vibrant prayer life. Developing the prayer life of disciples is the core of our ministry.”

Meet Thomas Bush and His Ministry Background

Prayer Assist — Leadership

Look for: Thomas Bush’s prayer-ministry experience, citywide prayer-network work, and his background as a trained Business Analyst. Notice how those experiences help explain the ministry’s emphasis on evaluation, strategy, leadership, and mobilization.

Ponder: How might Thomas’s background influence the questions Prayer Assist asks about prayer ministry?

Then return: Return to the Thomas Bush interview already posted in this SpotLIGHT. As you read, watch especially for EVALUATE → EQUIP → ENERGIZE → ENCOURAGE.

Map the Terrain

EVALUATE — Where are we?
Before searching for a new strategy, accurately assess the prayer life and culture you already have.

EQUIP — What is missing?
Encouraging people to pray is not the same as equipping them to pray. Prayer formation belongs within disciplemaking, not merely within a prayer program.

ENERGIZE — What needs to change?
Prayer is intended to affect who we are and what we do—not simply become another activity we perform.

ENCOURAGE — How does this become culture?
Prayer cannot depend indefinitely upon a few prayer champions. Leaders invite, encourage, equip, and develop praying disciples.

A Reimagine Question

What might we discover if we evaluated our prayer ministry by what our practices are producing—not merely by how many prayer activities we provide?

DECISION POINT: Prayer Activity or Prayer Culture?

Before adding another prayer meeting, prayer emphasis, prayer guide, prayer event, or prayer program, ask:

What are we actually trying to change?

An ACTIVITY?
What specific purpose would a new or revised prayer activity serve?

Our CULTURE?
What needs to change in leadership, disciplemaking, equipping, expectations, relationships, or practices?

BOTH?
How could a prayer activity become a vehicle for changing the culture rather than simply another event on the calendar?

SpotLIGHT MINISTRY MODEL

Look Below the Programs

A ministry website tells us what an organization offers. Look more closely and we can begin asking deeper questions:

What convictions seem to drive those offerings?

How are those convictions translated into ministry practices?

DNA & OS (Operating System)

DNA — Spiritual Foundations: the convictions, biblical truths, commitments, and values that shape the ministry.

OS — Operating System: the strategies, structures, habits, methods, practices, and processes through which those convictions are expressed.

The purpose is not to critique their website. The website becomes another source for exploring their ministry model.

DNA asks: What appears to drive Prayer Assist?

OS (Operating System) asks: How does Prayer Assist put those convictions to work?

DNA — What Appears to Drive Prayer Assist?

THEY SAY...

Prayer Assist says that developing the prayer life of disciples is central to its ministry. It connects spiritual vitality with a vital connection to God and describes its work as helping produce prayer-energized disciples and ministries.

REIMAGINE.NETWORK NOTICES...

Prayer is relational. Connection with God is more fundamental than prayer technique.

Prayer is formational. Prayer belongs within disciplemaking, not merely within a prayer department or program.

Prayer is biblical. Scripture shapes prayer and helps align praying with God's purposes.

Prayer is cultural. The objective extends beyond providing prayer activities toward developing praying people and ministries.

Prayer is missional. Prayer is connected with evangelism, community, mission, ministry, and God's purposes.

Prayer requires leadership. Leaders model, equip, encourage, and develop others in prayer.

Important: These are Reimagine.Network observations. They are not presented as Prayer Assist's official six-point statement of values.

Explore Their DNA

Prayer Assist — About / How We Can Help

Look for: Repeated words, convictions, desired outcomes, and assumptions about prayer—especially spiritual vitality, connection with God, prayer-energized disciples, coaching, training, strategy, and mobilization.

Ponder: What seems non-negotiable? What appears to motivate the ministry? DNA Question: What do they believe that seems to explain why they do what they do?

Then return: Bring your observations back to the SpotLIGHT before moving into the OS (Operating System).

OS (Operating System) — How Does Prayer Assist Put Its DNA to Work?

THEY DO...

Prayer Assist describes a range of ministry practices rather than one program: prayer-ministry planning, capacity building, equipping, coaching, evaluation, facilitation, event and initiative planning, customized resources, training, and teaching. Its leadership training includes L.E.A.D.—Leadership, Evaluation, Apprenticeship, Deployment.

Its resource library extends into prayer strategy, praying disciples, evangelistic prayer, corporate prayer, intercession, community prayer, leadership, evaluation, and Scripture-based prayer.

REIMAGINE.NETWORK NOTICES...

ASSESS → DISCERN → PLAN → EQUIP → PRACTICE → MOBILIZE

This is our map of what we observe, not a six-step process authored by Prayer Assist.

ASSESS — What is the present reality?

DISCERN — Where is attention needed?

PLAN — What strategy fits this context?

EQUIP — What do leaders and disciples need?

PRACTICE — How does prayer move from information into experience?

MOBILIZE — How does prayer permeate disciplemaking, leadership, ministry, evangelism, mission, and community?

Explore Their OS (Operating System)

Prayer Assist — Services: Enhance Your Organization’s Prayer Ministry Practice

Look for: Prayer Ministry Planning, Building Prayer Ministry Capacity, Equipping, Coaching, Facilitation, Prayer Event and Initiative Planning, Resources, and Training/Teaching.

Ponder: Which offerings address people? Which address practices? Which attempt to influence culture? OS Question: How have Prayer Assist’s convictions been translated into processes, training, tools, relationships, and practices?

Then return: Compare what you observed in their Operating System with the DNA convictions you identified.

DIG DEEPER... THEN RETURN

Take a Closer Look at Evaluation

Prayer Assist — How to Evaluate the Prayer Life of a Congregation

Look for: The HEIGHT • WIDTH • BREADTH • DEPTH questions and the progression toward a prayer-saturated church. Notice which questions identify activities and which expose culture.

Ponder: Where might your perception of your ministry’s prayer life differ from its actual practices?

Then return: ASK — What does this assessment help us notice? ADAPT — Which principles or questions could help us examine our context? APPLY — If the assessment exposed a weakness, what would actually need to change?

DON'T COPY THE OS (Operating System)

Discover the Connection

Studying another ministry's Operating System does not mean:

They do this → therefore we should do this.

Instead:

THEIR DNA
What convictions drive their ministry?

THEIR OS (Operating System)
How do those convictions shape what they do?

OUR DNA
What biblical truths, Christ-centered commitments, and Spirit-shaped convictions must remain rooted?

OUR OS (Operating System)
Are our habits, methods, strategies, structures, training, and practices actually expressing those convictions?

The objective is not imitation. It is discernment.

TURN THE SpotLIGHT AROUND

Prayer Assist has been under the SpotLIGHT. Now turn the light toward your ministry.

WE SAY...
What do we say we believe about prayer?

WE DO...
Where can those convictions actually be seen in our leadership, disciplemaking, planning, gatherings, decision-making, mission, and everyday ministry practices?

THE GAP...
Where is there distance between what we say and what we do?

THE OPPORTUNITY...
What needs to be reaffirmed? What needs to be reviewed? What needs to be revised? What needs to be renewed?

An Uncommon Question

If someone explored our website, interviewed our leaders, examined our calendar, and observed our ministry practices, what would they conclude we actually believe about prayer?

Choose the Prayer Assist Resource That Matches the Need You Identified

Prayer Assist — Resources Index

Look for: The specific category that addresses the need your exploration has identified: Creating a Culture of Prayer; Prayer Strategy; Evangelistic Prayer; Corporate Prayer; Prayer Training Guides; or Scripture-Based Prayer Guides.

Ponder: Which resource category addresses an identified need—not merely an interesting topic?

Then return: Choose one resource from that category, explore it, and bring one observation, one question, and one possible application back to the SpotLIGHT.

ADAPT — So What?

Now return to what you have explored.

Don't ask only: “Which Prayer Assist idea could we use?”

  • What principle or practice deserves further exploration?
  • What is transferable?
  • What fits our DNA?
  • What would need to be translated for our context?
  • What should not be transferred simply because it works somewhere else?
  • What assumption or current practice might we need to rethink?

APPLY — Now What?

  • What will we try, practice, revise, or implement?
  • What do we need to change in order to implement something new?
  • Who needs to participate in the decision?
  • Who needs to be equipped rather than merely recruited?
  • What existing practice might need to be revised—or discontinued—to make room for something new?
  • What coaching or conferring should we pursue?

And perhaps most importantly: What is one faithful next step?

Not ten new prayer activities.
One intentional response to what you have discovered.

DIG DEEPER... THEN RETURN

Explore Scripture-Centered Prayer

Prayer Assist — Biblical Prayer: Enjoying the Power and Confidence of Scripture-Centered Prayer

Look for: Prayer Assist’s contrast between God-centered prayer and need/request-based prayer, and the role Scripture plays in shaping prayer.

Ponder: How Scripture-centered is the way we teach and practice prayer? What would become different if Scripture more intentionally shaped our praying?

Then return: Return to Thomas’s concluding response and prayer in the SpotLIGHT interview. Read it now through the lens of what you discovered about Prayer Assist’s DNA and OS (Operating System), then write your What? → So What? → Now What?
